🎼 The The: Dusk (1993)

Soul Mining (1983) being the busting-out-of-the-underground epic. Infected (1986) the edgy, more commercial step. And Mind Bomb (1989) mixing it with almost pop. All of them political and in your face, not just lyrically but album covers, videos and marketing.

Then Dusk. Still political, still with urgency but also even more personal. If the previous albums were daytime protests, this is the late night confessions of loneliness, vulnerability and hopelessness. 

This is a cigarette smoke, cheap bars, dimmed lights, stripper poles and candid conversations setting. But also a ride on the train of consequences, afterthoughts and painful regrets.

Matt Johnsons peaks as a singer. Machisimo, earnestness, bravado and vulnerability. The band is of course super-tight now. Johnny Marr and David Palmer bringing the super-classy foundation. Everything sounds so effortless and flowing, pure emotion delivered through music and lyrics.
