Best part of writing more Mystrade on the high seas? Being able to use the following phrase:
"Mycroft's great antipathy towards hammocks"

I was today years old when I found out that the mobile and web views are different. And I just scrambled to find a photo because why have I been staring at a random green background.
Behold, you have a red flower in a sea of blue flowers [insert something profound here] sorry, this is all you get today.
I need my fic to write itself. Lets’s see...
1. Mystrade - Mycroft is Lestrade’s emergency contact and he only finds out when he gets himself landed in hospital.
2. 2nd chapter of https://archiveofourown.org/works/35761831/chapters/89175067 When Do We Wait for Forever - WandaVision spoilers. I think I’m about 200-500 words away from finishing chapter 2.
3. Lokius smut do I dare?
4. Lokius sort of kind of AU to do with Roosevelt High School. I’m loving this idea very much (yes, tooting my own horn) and would love to get it out there!
5. Hamster, that’s all I’m gonna say.
Brain goes bleh. I can’t fathom why I’m just extraordinarily tired recently.

Ramdon AU
The lovely people on the server suggested these random AUs, but we are happy to add to it.
Uncanny by @justusmice, E, 87k
He'd read fairy tales when he was a kid, had read myths, heard snippets of folklore. Now and then he'd hear weird rumours on the streets of uncanny things that he'd dismissed as the drugged out ravings of hallucinating junkies, but now he was wondering what he'd missed, and if they really had seen things. Greg Lestrade had always considered himself an ordinary bloke, not prone to flights of fantasy. When he is kidnapped from the streets of London and wakes in a dungeon, he must reevaluate everything he thought he knew about the world, and about himself.
The Lydia Chronicles by @out-there-tmblr, 3 fics: E 33k + E 31k + M 11k
Instinct told him that Captain Gregory Lestrade was a man he could trust. But how could this pirate, who had just stormed his ship, be a true man of honour? Captive on the high seas, with nowhere to run, curiously Mycroft Holmes had never felt more free. If he returned to rigid society he'd become an old man's unwilling spouse. If he stayed with Lestrade, the captain had made it abundantly clear he would become his more than willing lover…
Men of the Howve by @odamaki, T, 8k
“Do you wine and dine all of your victims?” Mycroft asks archly. His host clucks his tongue, “Only the comely ones,” he teases and Mycroft horrifies himself by blushing all the way around the back of his neck. One doesn’t go about expecting flirtation from robbers in the woods.
Dark Things Happen at the Turn of the Year by @odamaki, T, 7k but this is just one chapter, so about 1,3k
Mystrade Genielock
The Bad Bridesmaid by @out-there-tmblr, G, 11k
"My wedding is ruined and my marriage is going to fail. And it’s all your fault!"As a Geneva-based political consultant, Mycroft Holmes has it all: influence, money, success, a sleek and toned body and a string of sexy lovers. He's almost forgotten his previous self: Mikey Holmes, a plain and pudgy boy, later an awkward and clumsy teenager. Until a wedding invitation arrives requesting (demanding!) his presence as chief bridesmaid at his younger brother Sherlock's upcoming nuptials.Mycroft's barely been back in England before he's accidentally injured the groom and been caught in a compromising position with his future brother-in-law's best man! With the wedding of the year about to be doomed, Mycroft has no time to waste – especially with sexy detective and best man Greg Lestrade on hand to help...
Written in Skin by @vulpesmellifera, M, 26k
It’s a lot like leafing through pages in a large picture book, or watching life being lived on the other side of a window. The glass is clear, but still a barrier. Objects are out of reach, though the acts that unfold can tug at your heart or spark a forest fire of rage. Or encourage a person to engender a certain numbness of feeling. Mycroft Holmes lives a quiet, steady life. He works. He paints. He takes walks. It’s what he does to ignore the flurry of partnering around him. Whether it’s the biological drive to mash two bodies together, or the religious dictum of the salvation in finding one’s Devotee, it’s not for him. It won't ever be for him.Until the day he meets a blind man in the park. The world will never be the same.
Let Sleeping Dragons Lie by @MerHums
“Do I make you nervous?”“You're a bloody dragon, and you're talking to me and I came here to kill you, of course you make me nervous!” --- In which Greg is a knight who can't do his job, and Mycroft is a shape shifting dragon who made the wrong witch angry. Humor, romance, and chess playing ensues.
Mara's Mercy by @mottlemoth, E, 62k
[Medieval Fantasy Mystrade] Gregori is on the run from his old life in Cyrodiil—and he could have picked a better place than Skyrim. Captured as a suspected rebel, he faces the headman's axe. A series of staggering events then dramatically alter his fortunes. The quiet town of Falkreath isn't all that it seems, and neither is the Breton bookseller Greg meets on the road. The clever and interesting Mycroft is hiding a secret—but then, so is Greg. As they journey towards Whiterun together, and their friendship grows closer, their secrets must all come to light.
Everyone has a ghost story by @Eva, T 16k
Greg said he would help before he knew what that entailed: a haunted house, a summer long forgotten, and a friend who'd needed his help before they'd even met.
Shave and a Haircut - Two Bits by @bitemebat, G, 3k
A bedraggled stranger wanders into Mycroft's shop after hours.
One Night by @bitemebat, E, 8k
Written for a prompt from "Sherlock Rare Pair Bingo".The prompt was "alternate professions", and I've chosen Greg & Mycroft as my pairing.
Twice Shy by @ewebie, E, 37k
It was a marriage of convenience. In a time when Greg Lestrade, as the second born son, was more than likely to be parcelled off in an arranged marriage with a perfect stranger, the offer of security and independence wasn’t one he could turn down. Maybe slightly lacking in romance, Mycroft’s proposal was simple and pragmatic. Engagement: short. Marriage: mutually beneficial.
The Difference Between Misfortune and Calamity by @ewebie ,  T, 6k
“The difference between a misfortune and a calamity is this: If Gladstone fell into the Thames, it would be a misfortune. But if someone dragged him out again, that would be a calamity.” ~ Benjamin Disraeli There were a great many things to wonder about Greg Lestrade. Sure he was a workhorse, rather unsinkable, charming, and a bit of a flirt. But more than anything, it made no logical sense that he often found himself where he was...
November Mystrade 2018 by @topicabo, E, 19k but this is just one chapter, so about 0.8k
The book he’d brought last time, he’d at least been familiar with. But he’s never read this one. Too farfetched for his taste, and barely any academic value to be found. He’s no idea if it’s any good. But it feels appropriate, somehow. He’s in a fantastical situation – it only seems right to choose a fantastical story to match.
What random AU you’d suggest?

Members-Only Giveaway: Prize Results
Since only one person posted about their MFPE Members-Only Giveaway prizes (insert sad face here), we are making the list public so that everyone can see what was given out.  Prizes were given out based on interest—everyone received at least one item they ranked high.  Some items did not receive even one high ranking, which is why you see some people with multiple items.
All prizes were sent out as of June 15th, 2021, except for one package (for which we are awaiting an updated address).  International members, please note that we shipped your items in the cheapest way possible (yet we still managed to spend nearly $200 on shipping), so your items may still be en route as of this post.
Since we are posting your fan numbers here, DO NOT post photos of your loot unless you don’t mind your identity being linked to your fan number.  For the one person who has posted a photo, we are using their username rather than their fan number.
FYI, no one received the Harry Potter wrist lanyard, as we managed to completely forget to pack it.  Oops.

Fic Writing Fun
Thank you for the tag @lavenderandvanilla!
Ao3 Name: Conduitstreetcat
Fandoms: Mormor all the way.
Number of fics: 27
1. Fic you spent the most time on: A Sea of Troubles, the final book in our Symbiotic Criminal Psychopath series. It took us almost a year to finish that - but it’s worth it.
2. Fic you spent the least time on: Sometimes I can’t sleep and a story comes. Sometimes I write it down when I wake up. Sometimes it’s short. Song of the Sea is one of those.
3. Longest Fic: In Sanguine Veritas, 262245 words of vampiry goodness.
4. Shortest Fic: This Is a Love Story, 428 words.
5. Most hits: Kiss or Kill, the first book in the Symbiotic Criminal Psychopaths series and the first FaerieCat collaboration.
6. Most kudos: Kiss or Kill.  Technically it’s the poor abandoned Mystrade fic I wrote for the Mystrade Valentines Calendar, but that doesn’t count as the kudo count is artificially high because of the Valentines Calendar thing.
7. Most comment threads: St Jimmy with 80 comment threads. People had a lot of feelings about the Hot Priest and the suicidal sniper.
8. Fave Fic you wrote: That’s like choosing a favourite child! It’s always the ones I’m now writing, or the one just finished. I’ll go for Moriamur - the story of Death falling in love which we just finished.
9. Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: We always struggle ending a story, because it’s just too painful, so we always think about sequels for any story we do.  I’d love to return to the Symbiotic Criminal Psychopaths realm and just - keep writing it as a constant companion. Nothing fanciful - just Jim and Seb living their lives.
10. Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: We’ve just started Tomorrow the World, a story of Teen!Mormor and it’s raw, volatile, feral, and beautiful. We’re also writing Tiger on the Silk Road, an Arabian Nights AU filled with jinn, Goddesses, silk carpets and hot Mormor. And finally we’re working on Golden Tiger Silver Spider, a retirement Mormor (which is in all ways the opposite to the Teen!Mormor...) in which Jim and Seb miraculously lived to a ripe age and are thinking of retiring.
Anyone who’d like to play along please do!

Highbrow fics
This is the other set of recs I wanted to put together for @ghislainem70 to ease her recovery. (The first list of BDSM-themed fics is here.) These are fics with a slightly more intellectual edge, inspired by ghislainem70′s many excellent and thought-provoking fics, such as The Omega Sutra, On the Side of the Angels, The Indestructibles, and Mad, Bad and Dangerous.
A Broken Engagement by ButterscotchCandybatch (18K, Explicit, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes, the younger son of the Baronet Siger Holmes, is forced to break off his engagement to the commoner, young Navy Lieutenant John Watson. He retreats into cold isolation and a laudanum addiction and it appears he may never have another offer of marriage. When the rich and dashing Captain Watson returns eight years later, he is now courting a family friend, Mary Morstan. Can Sherlock win back his John? Regency period AU.
A Dangerous Liaison by Holly Sykes (89K, Explicit, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes is married to crippled aristocrat Sir Victor Trevor and he has shunned the life of the flesh in favour of that of the mind. But what happens when he meets rugged gamekeeper John Watson, a disillusioned ex soldier with a murky past? Love and physical passion come up against the class divide, but there’s also a murder, the high society of 1920s London and Sherlock in costume.
All Things Will Die, Nothing Will Die by Holly Sykes (109K, Explicit, Johnlock) Time: January, 1831. Something suspicious is happening at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital: corpses are brought in and sold to the surgeons, but Sherlock Holmes suspects foul play. He’s not alone: at Guy’s Hospital, Doctor John Watson refuses to pay twelve guineas for a body that he fears has been tampered with. The lives of the two men collide one frosty winter night and from that moment on, they will never be torn asunder.A macabre AU story of grisly murders, passion, sex and mystery, with an unambiguous happy ending; inspired by the London Burkers crimes, by several short stories written around that period and by the book The Vampyre Family by Andrew McConnell Stott. Also, a very big help was the Italian Boy by Sarah Wise, which chronicles grave robberies in 1830's London.
Attribute Nothing to Fate by recreational (37K, Explicit, Johnlock) A journey to Italy calls up old desires, but John Watson, trapped by the social conventions of his time, is not prepared to give in to temptation and change his life forever. It takes someone else to do that for him.
Bel Canto by bendingsignpost (127K, Teen, Johnlock, Adlock, and Irene/Kate) After years of waiting for wealthy patrons to faint, Dr John Watson discovers a far more interesting patient in the opera house basement.
Books of Mystery by fresne (58K, Johnlock) Sherlock Omegaverse written as a medieval Romance. In this lai, I set forth the adventure that relates how the good knight Jean Lanval came to cleave with Mystery, and how though an ever leftward turning path he and his Lord chose, still they came to the right.
Lightning and Sea Glass by 221b_careful_what_you_wish_for (18K, Explicit, Johnlock and Mollrene) The mad Professor Moriarty and his reluctant assistant John Watson have reanimated the dead – and the results are beautiful. At least John thinks so. When Moriarty rejects his creation, John disappears with the creature to protect it, sealing their fates together.
One Night in December by Holly Sykes (126K, Explicit, Johnlock) London, 29th December 1940, 8 pm. The London Blitz reached its nadir with the bombing of the City of London and the area around its most beloved landmark, St. Paul’s Cathedral. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes meet as the flames blaze and roar all around them. But who is that dark-haired young man and why is he risking his life in such a careless manner? This is what Doctor Watson is wondering, as he eventually becomes enmeshed in a mystery that will take him away from his dreary, hopeless life and plunge him into the secret life of wartime London.
Sketchy by serpentynka (629K, Explicit, Johnlock and Mycroft/OMC) What (and who) will be left when nobody cares about your Work?  A slow-burn fic with cases, places, mistaken identities, unfair choices, essential changes, violent feels, blatant lies, fearless portraiture, family secrets, high-risk bespoke gifts, durable friendships, bedtime stories, foreign travel and tongues, sickness (and health), and the significance of things which are slow to unfurl -- but cannot be ignored.  Oh, and...porn.
SPQR by hoc_voluerunt (156K, Teen, Johnlock) The year is AD 68. Emperor Nero is on the throne, the Judaean Revolt is nearing its end under the firm hands of Vespasian and his son Titus, and Marcus Caelius Piso Vannus, son of a British freedman and former surgeon to the Fifteenth Apollonian Legion, has just returned from the provinces with an injured shoulder and no veteran's benefits to rent a shabby room in the shadow of the city wall. Thrust into his life, however, comes Amulius Cornelius Celatus -- a noble man from an ancient family, with good hair, a better toga, and the biggest ego this side of the Tiber. You wouldn't think they'd end up living together, let alone fighting crime; but then, neither would you think that one shadowy criminal figure orchestrated the fire of 64...
Stars in a Phrygian Sky by fresne (60K, Explicit, Johnlock, Adlock, Viclock, Mollrene, and others) Sherlock got rid of everything that he had ever known about the stars when he was nine years and five months old, which given his plans to be a pirate in the West Indies, the importance of astral navigation for a pirate, and given that he was him, that had been quite a lot. He didn't give away his mariner's astrolabe until much later. When Irene was ten years old, she fell in love with the most beautiful, perfectly-perfect amoral Omega woman ever. Which is to say, she read Steinbeck's "East of Eden".John stayed up one particularly nasty March night until 2:32 am reading "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". Hail rattled against the window. To John, it was the sound of desert sand on dry canvas.
Tanto Monta by fresne (62K, Explicit, Johnlock, Sheriarty, Sherlock/OMCs, John/OCs) Sherlock began to turn into a desert when he was nine. Desertification took years, but grain by grain his Memory Palace turned from a primordial forest into scrub brush and sand. Only mad dogs and Englishmen could love the desert that he'd made of himself. When John was fourteen, he stayed out late one particularly nasty March night at the rec centre reading a book. The results of that choice left him feeling like an ill fitting cog the rest of his life.Or equal opposites in balance.
The Beast of Baskerville by mildredandbobbin (74K, Explicit, Johnlock) 15th Century/fairy tale AU. An invalided John Watson comes to the isolated village of Baskerville seeking shelter with his sister, only to become embroiled in a grisly murder. As the villagers point to a local werewolf legend, the odd but brilliant friar, Brother Sherlock, disagrees and soon he and John are on the the trail of a murderer. Captivated by the enigmatic friar, John finds himself struggling with his illicit feelings for the celibate man of God.
The Desire and Pursuit of the Whole by Holly Sykes (90K, Explicit, Johnlock) Britain, 1925. Sherlock Holmes – young detective, violin player and virtual misanthrope – has been hired by a mysterious and immensely wealthy man to find the missing manuscript of a contentious novel. John Watson - doctor, ex soldier and widower - is older and disillusioned. They meet on a rainy night in Sussex and from then on both their lives are changed forever. As their tentative friendship turns into a more intense relationship, Sherlock and John’s big adventure sees them end up in Venice, where the mystery is finally solved.
Underneath the Veil by Holly Sykes (73K, Explicit, Johnlock) Lord Sherlock Holmes is a wealthy aristocrat who lives almost like a hermit and indulges in opium-eating and sporadic crime solving. One evening, in the throes of a drug-caused hallucination, he stumbles upon Doctor John Watson. It’s love at first sight for the still-virgin Sherlock, but he’s convinced the other man could never feel the same. When a renowned painter is killed, Sherlock convinces John to help him with the investigation and their friendship takes an unexpected turn.
Unreal Cities by breathedout (312K, Explicit, Johnlock, John/OMCs, Irene/OFC) Sherlock, John, and the Bloomsburies, gallivanting across Britain and the Continent in the early twentieth century. In 1920, two years after the end of the Great War, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson investigate two disappearances, eerily similar but separated by 80 years. In the process, they make enemies (and friends) of Bloomsbury intellectuals; travel to Sussex; deal with the aftermath of John's past in the trenches; read Victorian pornography; drink copious amounts of tea; and, of course, fall in love.
Watson’s Folly by Diana Williams (299K, Mature, Johnlock, Mystrade, and MorMor) John Watson, the new Earl of Saughton, is madly in love with the beautiful Mary Morstan. But he has returned from the Peninsular War to find his family on the brink of ruin and his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. He has little choice when he is introduced to Mycroft Holmes, a civil servant of apparently unlimited wealth and no social ambitions for himself - but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his only brother, the unorthodox and irascible Omega Sherlock Holmes.  Can John forget the woman he loved and find happiness with a man so very different from his lost love?

A slow-burn fic with cases, places, mistaken identities, unfair choices, essential changes, violent feels, blatant lies, fearless portraiture, family secrets, high-risk bespoke gifts, durable friendships, bedtime stories, foreign travel and tongues, sickness (and health), and the significance of things which are slow to unfurl – but cannot be ignored.  Oh, and…porn.
SPQR by hoc_voluerunt (156K, Teen, Johnlock) The year is AD 68. Emperor Nero is on the throne, the Judaean Revolt is nearing its end under the firm hands of Vespasian and his son Titus, and Marcus Caelius Piso Vannus, son of a British freedman and former surgeon to the Fifteenth Apollonian Legion, has just returned from the provinces with an injured shoulder and no veteran’s benefits to rent a shabby room in the shadow of the city wall. Thrust into his life, however, comes Amulius Cornelius Celatus – a noble man from an ancient family, with good hair, a better toga, and the biggest ego this side of the Tiber. You wouldn’t think they’d end up living together, let alone fighting crime; but then, neither would you think that one shadowy criminal figure orchestrated the fire of 64…
Stars in a Phrygian Sky by fresne (60K, Explicit, Johnlock, Adlock, Viclock, Mollrene, and others) Sherlock got rid of everything that he had ever known about the stars when he was nine years and five months old, which given his plans to be a pirate in the West Indies, the importance of astral navigation for a pirate, and given that he was him, that had been quite a lot. He didn’t give away his mariner’s astrolabe until much later. When Irene was ten years old, she fell in love with the most beautiful, perfectly-perfect amoral Omega woman ever. Which is to say, she read Steinbeck’s “East of Eden”.John stayed up one particularly nasty March night until 2:32 am reading “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom”.
Only mad dogs and Englishmen could love the desert that he’d made of himself.
In the process, they make enemies (and friends) of Bloomsbury intellectuals; travel to Sussex; deal with the aftermath of John’s past in the trenches; read Victorian pornography; drink copious amounts of tea; and, of course, fall in love.

John seems annoyed to be second-best, Sherlock thinks, so Sherlock decides to give the departing woman (and maybe also John) a demonstration of who, exactly, John belongs to. But there's more than one level of sexual jealousy and more than one display of possession going on here, outlined in the window of 221b Baker Street. Part 2 of Lock and Key
Apodyopsis by QuinnAnderson (E, 3,347 w.,1 Ch. || PWP, Rough Sex, Table Sex, Anal, Sexual Tension) – Apodyopsis: (æpəʊdaɪˈɒpsɪs) noun. the act of mentally undressing someone. Part 2 of Undressed

My Life for His by QuinnAnderson (E, 8,816 w., 1 Ch. || Guardian/Protector, Greek Mythology || Growing Up, Sex, Religious Themes, Suicide, Minor Character Death) – It began when Sherlock was eight, and he attempted to climb all the way up to the highest branch in the old willow tree in his back garden. He'd thought he was still small enough that it could support him, but the second he'd grabbed hold of it to pull himself up, the branch snapped, and down he went, plummeting a solid twenty metres. The odd thing was, he never actually hit the ground.

The Kepler Problem by kinklock (E, 24,270 w., 1 Ch. || Sci-Fi AU, Alien Sherlock, Space Repairman John, Alien Biology, Horny John) – Working in uncharted space exploration was not as exciting as John had hoped, especially when it turned out to be mostly bot maintenance on uninhabited planets. To lounge beside the beach bonfire every evening with an ice cold beer tucked into the cool sand beside him and listen to Pink Floyd and the Doors while the saltwater dries in his sun bleached hair. That's all he wants, that is, until the hot young phenom taking Oahu and the Hawaiian shores by storm steps up next to him in the sand in the second round of the 1976 International Surf Competition. When this child is born, the angel comes into being to protect and care for them during their life on Earth. For John Watson, all he cares about in the world revolves around his Chosen, Sherlock Holmes. Watching him grow up though, the angel soon learns that God must have had a sense of humour the day he decided to make Sherlock, as trouble seems to follow him like a magnet wherever he goes. John can't decide what's worse, the idea of losing his Chosen one, or the fact that he may be breaking the most taboo law of heaven as he disguises himself as a human to better protect and befriend the beloved detective he's always watched from afar. He was meant to care for him. But what happens when caring evolves into something more? What happens when an emotion an angel is supposed to be incapable of possessing comes to life suddenly and viciously inside John's chest?

The End?
I hate titles.
So this is another of that series of fic where I used pre-set first lines from a prompt list and did one with Mystrade and one set in Foldings. Only every time I do it, I can’t find the same list I started with, so both prompts are from different lists (”Bruises” being the other). (Honestly, I forgot that one. I didn’t remember the starting line, or what I’d written, or where I posted them. Anyone else do that?)
This is the Foldings one...
“Is this the end? After everything we’ve been through?”
“End of what?”
“Us. You an’ me. We were a good team,” EJ said sadly, his cheek mashed against his forearm as he laid against his school desk. “Nobody else ever kept up.”
“’Cept your mice.”
“But they can’t do spells.”
“How would you know?”
“C’mon, Christine. Come on. Once it’s out of the oven, we’ve only got a couple of minutes till it’s on a tray up to their rooms.”
“All you have to do is ask and I bet one of the cooks would make all the mudpie you want.”
“But it’s never as good as when Sally does it!”
“How do you know?”
“She made it last year for the Darklight Fest! We only got some because the Vedouci and Druhy were both out.”
“What difference does it make who made the pie?” Christine asked, scrubbing at her paper furiously with her pencil, covering it in black smudge.
“I dunno. If I did, I’d be in the kitchens. It’s just…better. She uses more chocolate or something. And the gravy on top is smoother.”
“You mean sauce.”
“I don’t know! I don’t work in the kitchen!” EJ turned his head face down, groaning against his desktop. “Come on.”
“I want to finish this.”
EJ flopped back in his seat suddenly, sighing. “It’s too late. Don’t bother. It’s already on the tray, in the dumbwaiter, on the way up. All that crispy, flaky crust and juicy chocolate, steaming and melting all over the plate…”
Christine reached across the aisle with one hand and shoved EJ hard in the chest. “Don’t be stupid.”
EJ shrugged, his nonchalance almost convincing himself. “Why not? Never tried being stupid. It might be fun. Always looks like it when Pochet does.”
“You’re mean.” There was no heat in it, but there never was. Christine said it several times a day, so it was probably automatic.
“Well I’m gonna go see if there’s any left, now. You can come or stay here with the little babies and learn numbers or something.” EJ shoved his chair back.
“No, stop!” Christine hissed. “Just…wait for me.”
“Hurry up, then.”
Christine bit her lip, scowling fiercely at her paper. Śe Sophia was crouched beside Amy, helping her draw. With the teacher’s attention focused elsewhere, Christine pushed her hand flat against the blank page, pressing as hard as she could until as much of the page as possible was in contact with her hand. Then she snapped her hand back pulled, yanking dark black lines into place. It wasn’t quite what she had in mind. She’d wanted a ship with lots of sails and ropes and rigging and nets and flags and masts, but trying to picture all of it at once was a lot harder than drawing it a bit at a time, making sure all the lines were straight, seeing if the sails were wide enough, if she could fit one more in. The image she’d pulled into place had crooked masts with sails that were just white squares that overlapped. The flag at the top of the tallest mast was just a bunch of lines. The sea that she’d already drawn put the ship to shame, but it was good enough when weighed against the potential loss of chocolate.
“Śe Sophia? I’m done,” Christine announced, dropping the picture into the bag next to her desk. “May we go to the library?”
The teacher looked up at her with piercing green eyes, then flicked her gaze across to EJ. “We?”
“Yes, Śe,” EJ said politely. “She’s going to help me find a book on mice.”
“Why do you want a book on mice?” Sophia demanded, straightening and crossing the room in three long strides, dodging desks that were little more than knee-high to her to get to the taller ones at the back.
“I read all the books on helephants and foxes and weasels and their kin, I’ve read three on rabbits, ten on horses, five on lizards, seven on frogs—”
“I didn’t ask which books you have read,” Sophia sighed, propping her fists on her hips. “Why mice?”
“Because they’re brilliant!” EJ burst out. “They learn all kinds of things, and they can get through a hole you can barely see, and they talk with smells, and they have feelings and get happy and sad for each other and they’ll tell you that, you just have to—”
“EJ! I understand!” Sophia waved off his excitement. “It seems to me you already know a great deal on the subject of mice.”
“Oh but there’s so much more!” EJ said earnestly. “I wanna know how many kinds there are, and if they can all talk to each other or if they have languages like people do, and if they learn each others’ languages, and do they have accents? Do they all learn stuff the same way? Like if I give one a puzzle will he figure it out the same way as a mouse from Nine Bridges Over Grass? And can they teach each other? And do they all live as long or do some live longer? Can they figure out how to help each other live longer, like is there mouse medicine? What kinds of magic can they do—”
“Mice doing magic?” Sophia asked in alarm.
“Sure, Śe! Why not? If they can learn the sigils and run around them, why wouldn’t it work?”
“Śe Sophia? Can we get pet mice?” asked a small boy in the front pair of desks.
“Christine, take EJ to the library and see if you can find him a book on why mice make very bad pets,” Sophia sighed, waving the pair of them toward the door. “Pochet, my darling, let’s see first if you can draw one. What kind of mouse do you think would live in a desert?…”
EJ grabbed Christine’s hand as they sprinted down the hallway. “Come on! Maybe we can steal the gravy pot!”
“It’s sauce, EJ, and you can’t because you’re too short and can’t levitate things yet.”
“Neither can you!”
“I don’t need to because I’m tall enough and I climb better. And I know how to stack thing so they don’t tip over!”
“See? This is why we’re a good team!”
“Because I could sneak the pie out without you?” she asked, and dashed past him, laughing.
“Because you wouldn’t think to steal it!” EJ called, stretching his legs to try to catch up.
Ten minutes later, the pair were sitting in a corner of the kitchen with red knuckles, tear tracks down their cheeks, and small bowls with broken chunks of flaky pastry covered in gooey chocolate. Sally harrumphed and walked away from them, muttering.
“Library after though, yeah?” EJ whispered.
“You mean you don’t already know all that about your mice? I thought now you had one from every country in your box!”
“I do,” EJ insisted, setting down his spoon for a moment to slide the matchbox out of his pocket and nudge the lid back just far enough for dozens of tiny pink noses like grains of sand to poke up at him over the edge of the box. He picked off a crumb of pastry for them and dropped it into the box, feeling the balance tip as the magically-shrunken animals scampered over to begin nibbling on a flake big enough for two of them to hide under.
“Can I see them?” Christine asked, bending closer. She waved at the box by barely moving the tip of her finger, unable to hide a grin at the soft chorus of squeaks in response.
“They always like you,” EJ said, dropping in a few more crumbs.
“D’you think you could shrink a horse to something tiny enough to fit in a pocket?”
“Reckon I could. Problem is finding a horse that no one would notice was missing.”
“I’ll ask Tom,” Christine decided. “Next time he comes for Amy’s pile. He doesn’t like them.”
“If he doesn’t like the piles, why does he come to them? And isn’t he more likely to say no, then?” Ej asked, finally getting more of his attention focused on the broken bits of pie in front of him.
“No, he doesn’t like horses,” Christine told him, industriously cramming chocolate into her mouth. “Don’t be stupid.”
“Maybe I like being stupid.”
“Can I have your pie, stupid?”

The afternoon sun is warm on Mycroft's back, but there's a light breeze catching in the sails. They're close enough to shore to hear squawks of seagulls. Mycroft has his sketchbook open on his lap, but the page is empty. At the moment, he's quite content to watch over the deck and enjoy the lazy heat of the day.
Active as ever, Sherlock is up in the rigging, stepping lightly along the yardarms, ignoring the wind catching at his dark hair. John Watson's beside him, constant as a shadow.
Mycroft finds his attention wandering back to the starboard railing, where Gregory has paused in his inspection to talk to the men. There's a handful of the crew gathered around, drawn to Gregory's easy manners. The wind brings a snatch of laughter, but Mycroft can't make out the conversation.
Mycroft is content to sit back and observe, unnoticed, but Gregory glances over at the quarterdeck and smiles when he catches Mycroft watching. Such a bright joyous smile, for something as small as Mycroft's attention.
Mycroft nods in return, pleased and bashful, before turning his attention back to the pastels in his fingers.

The Case of the Jellyfish
Mystrade - Fluff Drugged!Mycroft
Letting himself get kidnapped was the best way to gather the intelligence he required. Being drugged hadn’t been a part of the plan, but in this as with everything else the kidnappers were inept.
-x-x-x-x-
Mycroft found himself very annoyed with the deceptive snow beneath his back. It was trying to make out that it was warm and cosy, but it was snow so obviously it was cold and wet. Stupid lying snow trying to confuddle him further. It was clearly in collusion with the jellyfish in the air that were stopping him from getting up with their pretty light pulse dances. The jellyfish were very pretty, but shouldn’t they be in water? Didn’t jellyfish need water? He’d have to ask Anthea about air jellyfish and why he’d not had a memo that this new species had moved into Scotland. It was very remiss of her not to have told him about them, and how could David Attenborough not have made a documentary already? He would have to look in to the funding for BBC Bristol, it was lacking if they’d not been able to get a camera crew up here for this natural wonder.
Wait. Hang on a moment.
Air jellyfish weren’t a thing, he knew that.
Oh, good lord, he was hallucinating. Rather impressively. Why was he hallucinating?
Oh, that would be the drugs the kidnappers had injected him with. He waggled a finger at the jellyfish; “See this is why you have to employ a real chemist to make your truth serum. Get a goldfish to do it and you end up with a giggling mess who won’t tell you anything of use. Not that I would have told them anything anyway. I mean, please, I’m a Holmes, disseminating is what I do.”
The jellyfish pulsed an urgent red. The bright colour sent a shiver through Mycroft.
“Ah, good point. I need to move, but not too far. I suspect that rescue will be imminent, but I don’t want to freeze before they get here.”
The jellyfish helped him to his feet and swam away so he could assess his surroundings. A graveyard. Okay possibly poetic, but he’d be thrice damned if he’d give his kidnappers the satisfaction of dying here. He glared unblinking at an angel statue. Did he need to worry about Weeping Angels? Probably not, the jellyfish would observe them, so he could blink and find shelter. Best to head toward the biggest feature, which was a mausoleum that the Addams family would favour. Interesting, the drugs had apparently unlocked his pop culture vault. Damn, he should be at a pub quiz, he’d rock it out. Good heavens, he had never thought that phrase in his life.
“You won’t tell on me, will you?”
The jellyfish shimmered through reassuring earth tones.
“Thank you, I appreciate your discretion.”
As he staggered through the snow toward the shelter offered by the tomb, he was drafting legislation to protect jellyfish, both on air and in the sea; it was overdue. They were wonderful creatures and needed looking after.
“I told you he’d head toward the biggest landmark.”
“Yes, thank you Sherlock. We believed you that’s why we’re here.”
The jellyfish dispersed as Mycroft was wrapped in a crinkly foil blanket. He mourned their loss but was grateful for the strong arms that were hugging him tight into a wealth of body heat.
“Mycroft. Mycroft? Can you look at me please?”
It took him a very long moment to focus on the cute rainbow voice in front of him.
“Hello Molly! How are you?”
“I’m great Mycroft. I need to do some tests, you okay with that?”
He glared at her; “You’re a pathologist. Am I dead?”
“No, no, no you’re alive and kicking Mycroft. Would you rather John checked you out?”
A soft rumbling voice whispered in his ear; “Whatever you want Myc. Just John is busy dealing with Sherlock and Molly is right here. Let her check you out, please, for me?”
The jellyfish that had followed him into the ambulance changed to soft shimmers of silver. Mycroft sighed happily; “I defer to your best judgement, Gregory.”
The cute rainbow of Molly took his vitals and slipped an IV into the back of his hand.
“Hold him tight, Greg, we need to warn him up. You are going to be fine Mycroft. We are going to flush out what they injected you with.”
“It was very shiny. All glittery and sparkles.”
“Am I like this when I’m high?”
“A bit, but you’re more of an arse, Sherlock.”
Mycroft giggled at the squids that were arguing. One was wearing a coat like Sherlock’s and the other was wrapped up in a jumper like John. They were very funny, but so frowny.
“Why are you two frowning at me so much?”
The squid version of his little brother rolled his many eyes; “Because you are high as a kite, brother mine. I actually feel the need to apologise for the many times you have hauled me out of the gutter.”
The silver fox behind Mycroft snapped his fingers; “Right, everyone give your phones to Molly. Now.”
“Are you assuming that I won’t steal a phone from Molly in order to get video evidence of my brother high as a kite?”
“Yup. Because she will slap the hell out of you Sherlock.”
The jellyfish twinkled gold as Mycroft laughed; “Oh brother mine, you are rightly scared of Doctor Molly. She’ll slap you seven ways from Sunday and so will all the jellyfish,” – he snuggled against the warm body behind him, - “Gregory and I don’t enjoy such activities in our sexy times, but each to their own.”
John chocked on his tentacles; “Far too much information.”
Sherlock rolled his eyes right out of his head and on to the floor of the ambulance; “Brother mine you are off your tits right now.”
Mycroft kicked a toe at Sherlock’s eyeballs, they danced back up into his brother’s head and span around in funny circles.
“Yup. Totally tripping balls, little bro. It’s not as fun as you make it out to be.”
Gregory’s chuckle rumbled through him; “Now, there’s a phrase I never thought I’d hear you say, Myc.”
“Never thought I’d discuss our sex life in front of my little brother, clearly today is a very strange day.”
Mycroft let the rocking of the ambulance sooth him into a doze. One by one the jellyfish flickered and vanished. He must be sobering up. He’d probably be embarrassed by all of this later, then again on Sherlock’s scale of mortifying moments this barely ranked a three. Now he was thinking more clearly, he was actually more worried about facing Anthea’s ire, she would not be happy that he’d let himself get kidnapped. He groaned, that could wait until he was feeling more human.
“Will you protect me from Anthea Gregory?”
A gentle kiss brushed his forehead; “Of course I will, love.”
