WHAT IS AGNOSTIC ?

I got an ask about this, so the Question is- what is agnostic?

 What is an agnostic? An agnostic is popularly defined as a person who holds to a middle ground between atheism and theism who also believes that the existence of God is a definite possibility but it is not within the realm of one’s knowledge. The term agnostic is a combination of the Greek prefix a meaning without and gnosis meaning knowledge. Thus, an agnostic is one who confidently affirms, “I don’t know.” 

Agnostic Origins

The term agnostic and the accompanying philosophy of agnosticism was introduced by Thomas H. Huxley, 19th century biologist, philosopher, speaker, and one of the first and foremost defenders of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of the Species.” Huxley clarified the philosophy of agnosticism in a series of essays published in 1889. He wrote, “Positively, (agnosticism) may be expressed: In matters of the intellect, follow your reason as far as it will take you, without regard to any other consideration. And negatively: In matters of the intellect do not pretend that conclusions are certain which are not demonstrated or demonstrable. That I take to be the agnostic faith, which if a man keep whole and undefiled, he shall not be ashamed to look the universe in the face, whatever the future may have in store for him.” 

Agnostic Camps

There are two definable camps of agnostics on today’s crowded and often confusing philosophical battleground: strong agnostics and weak agnostics. Strong agnostics state, “I don’t know and no one can know if there is a God or not.” Weak agnostics would say, “Well, I don’t know if there is a God but there isa possibility that someone else might know -- but, hey, that someone else is not you!” 

Both groups of agnostics hold to Huxley’s founding principle that it is wrong to go beyond the limits of one’s intellect and thus spend their lives with hearts in constant homage to their own reasoning. First promoted in defense of Darwin’s evolutionary theories, agnosticism now extends itself into every arena of life. Agnostics dismiss the evidence for biblical Christianity -- including creation by intelligent design -- as foolishness and declare God to be irrelevant to modern man. As cartoon Pogo once quipped, “God is not dead. He is merely unemployed.” And agnostics have given God his walking papers. 

Agnostic Future

Agnostics, holding firm to their faith of not knowing, would do well to examine the evidence for the same God that the apostle Paul presented on Mars Hill in Acts chapter 17. Playing upon the Athenians’ devotion to the altar of the Unknown God (the original Greek word for “unknown” is, yes, agnostos), Paul presented the truth of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and the coming judgment of God. Contrary to Huxley’s conclusion stated above, agnostics will indeed be ashamed as they face not a benign universe in the future but rather the severity of the Creator whom they chose to ignore.

HISTORY:

Wotan Borr was an adventurer, from before the days where being such a thing was as common as being a soldier, from the island nation of Kul Tiras. He was grand in his wit, and ideas and claimed to have never missed with his spear. However, his grand adventure would overturn a place that no mere man could believe. 

Stormheim, home to Vrykul, a race of half-giants that are closer related to humans than one might suspect. And Wotan nearly did not survive to find out they even existed. Nearly devoured by a massive wolf, even losing an eye, he was saved by a bolt of what seemed to be lightning. A mysticwoman, by the name of Gaea had come to his rescue. The barrier of speech became difficult, so they communed through their eyes, body, and crude sketches on the ground.

This was after she brought him to her hut, to heal him. His boat was destroyed, and he was lost here. But over time he did not mind the land, nor it’s people--Well, the one he truly knew, he had to hide when others came. But what could not be hidden was when they drew close over the years he hid with her, and such closeness brought them a child.

Thor, named after the grand keeper Thorim. His strength even from a young age was prodigious, quickly outgrowing his father. But a child cannot be hid like a man can. So Gaea decided to claim that he was the son of Odyn, who blessed her many moons ago. And it was not a coincidence lightning and thunder boomed over the land the day of his birth much greater than any time before.

Such a claim would be shot down, if it was not shown that Thor’s strength was more than a match for his peers, regardless of his size. Fighting beast and other clans, he soon grew to be a favoured son of Hrydshal. Earning the title Odynson. His triumphant moment coming from when he and his three warrior companions, Volstagg, Hogun and Fandral ventured deep into an old warlords tomb. 

Fighting a beast that may’be been said warlord in life, but in death a monster that lost it’s head and it’s hammer to Thor. The hammer was blessed by Thorim himself, smaller in a pure Vrykul’s hands, but perfect for his. It had awoken a power in him similar to his mother in fact, her blood may’ve been what truly gave him these powers, hammer only a key. Pure lightning and thunder was his to commune with, through the hammer, Mjolnir. 

His time in the sun, however, faded when his father was finally found out. Small and weak, he was broken so easily, Thor rushing to his defense as soon as he heard, but it was much too late, barely hearing his last words as he held his father’s body. Striking down the one who did the final strike with his hammer, brother to the chieftain. Such an offense, even by a champion was worthy of exile. He did not fight it. 

Thor would still be a champion for Stormheim and it’s people, shall they need them. Especially when the sky cracked green and demon’s flooded everywhere. And where he goes, the eye of Odyn watches closely.

For he was a Son of Stormheim
