‘Self Care’ . I’m joining @illo.dee , @mymcdoodles and @by_annaj with the monthly challenge to draw one specific theme. May's theme will be ‘Self Care’. It feels like now more than ever it's important to take the time to care for yourself. I know when I feel overwhelmed I need to take a break. Sometimes this includes laying on my floor, looking at my hanging lights, listening to music, lighting some incense and/or cuddling with my dog. A lot of other activities help take my mind off things and get me to relax too, some of which are scattered around the floor in this drawing. All of these things help bring me to a different headspace where it feels way more clear and I can remember to breathe. Self care isn't a selfish thing, it's a necessary thing and too often I feel people (especially the youth I work with) need to be reminded ot that. ⚠️CW: this post is sad and deals with heavy subjects of death and violence. Read at your own discretion ⚠️ Don't know if Canada ever really reaches international news headlines like the USA, but if you don't know a major tragedy happened last weekend. In Nova Scotia (eastern Canada) a man disguised himself as a police officer and drove around shooting people. He murdered 22 people before he was killed by the authorities. Today Canada is doing an online vigil. People were asked to wear red to show our support, and I thought I'd draw this piece as a homage to the victim's and the countless people that were affected by what happened. I don't live in that area and I don't know any of the victim's personally, but this shook the nation and reminded everyone that the world doesn't stop for a pandemic. My thoughts are with the family and friends of victims that are hurting during this time. . . . . . . April's theme will be ‘Stay at Home’. In some of the countries there are total lockdowns, while other countries have limited restrictions. Where I am my workplace has closed down, but I have the ability to work from home. When I have to stay at home, I try to bring the outdoors in (using real plants, lights, art etc.) and let my imagination wander in order to stay comfortable and have a safe space for me to be myself.
