Random thoughts list for our optical appetite asuaging Mr. Darling & others!

-Say the kidnapped crew miraculously found a box with a note from one of the original crew's teenaged youths who figured out what was happening at the studio & poured their purest intentions into a '50s-'60s themed doll/puppet/poppet (the Bob Dilian Cap, 'fro, green flower shades framed in purple Ombre, funky flowery tunic top, love beads [their maker's gifted for protection], evil eye medallion, waist beads under their top, bell bottoms, flowing scarves, etc., etc.) & decided to send their parent help in protecting them but it was too late. The new crew opened the pink/white wax-sealed box to find a spunky, funky, unnamed, disco dolly that was specifically made to combat Wally's reign.

-What if Mr. Darling met the new puppet who was (by some mystical BS for plot's sake) 100% immune to his way of eating & when he tried to bite them he only gets whatever is behind his intended target? This varies in reactions depending on what was beside them if anything. He could have eaten the part of a table or counter their food was sitting on & they sass him for that or if their make-up was eaten they'd ask if he felt pretty on the inside. The scene that initially plopped into my head like a boulder falling into a big lake was:

Wally wonders upon the newest addition to The Neighborhood just to find them doing something he doesn't like & tries to use his eyes but he only catches the bush they were passing by/looking at or what-have-yous. They don't veer around, flinch, nothing. A simple chuckle & a lone, feasibly dominant hand to the respective hip is all the star of the show gets before they peek mockingly over their shoulder at him.

"What's the dealio, Darling Daddy-o? Too much to bite off~?" Thus, the war began.

-Jokingly, the new puppet said Mr. Darling is "wally, wally, blood & dolly" for them (wild about a person in a way that makes you blind to their faults) to whoever/everyone who'd lend an ear which caused Mr. Darling to become even angrier with them. They like him angry, it's so cute.

-All the early '60s-'70s jargon with all the trimmings.

-They have a Home, too. This one formed from a little die that (when tossed lightly on the desired spot) spawned in the chosen place, batting its frilled shutters as it came to life ready to welcome its lone occupant in & keep intruders out. The new crew placed it on the outskirts of The Neighborhood while the new puppet/poppet was distracting Mr. Darling. You can imagine his reaction when he heard it creak cheerfully as the new neighbor scattered through the twin stable doors [possibly decorated in/painted with the pattern of dark blue/pink/green/white/red evil eyes] as they slam behind them, leaving the "eyes" to glare at Wally before setting a barrier to protect the newest Bungalow (Bunny???) from his devouring gaze.

Sega Mega Drive - Twinkle Tale

The heroine of Twinkle Tale is a young witch who must collect the 5 mystical orbs to save the world of Arfeirion from being overrun by the evil dark ones. The game kicks off with the prologue all in Japanese but not to worry since you really don't need to know what this is saying to enjoy the game.

The first level begins with our heroine standing in what seems to be a clearing in the middle of a sparsely wooded forest. A few shots with one of her weapons instantly evaporate a pair of treasure chests, revealing two globes with stars painted on them. These are the most important items in Twinkle Tale. Collecting them first powers up the weapon the heroine's currently using and then starts powering up the other two. Each weapon can be powered up to 3 times, with each new level adding more projectiles and power to her attack. Almost immediately after getting those first upgrades, it will be time to test them out on a few monsters, as several bats and goblins make a short-lived stand against her power. After that easy win, she'll be able to snag a couple more treasure chests and move to a more mountainous region of the opening level.

Not all of these chests contain weapon orbs. Others may have one of two special attacks. The heroine can hold up to three of these items at once, with one type sending gigantic blue orbs at foes and the other assaulting them with gigantic fiery snakes. Or a treasure chest may contain medicine to heal the damage she's taken.

Most stages within Twinkle Tale have tricky little areas which seem placed in the game for the sole reason of stealing the power of a player's most effective weapon. Gigantic steel balls crash down the corridors of the second level's castle, while the elevated platforms of the third stage offer plenty of opportunities for the girl to forfeit a hit because she stumbled off a narrow path while attempting to dodge a few projectiles.  The maze-like caverns of the fifth level send the player down branching corridors through a series of rooms containing grotesque foes that waste no time in shooting first and asking questions later.... that is, assuming they ever had plans to ask anything in the first place. The second stage has a handful of side rooms that can be entered, allowing the girl to collect a couple of treasures — if she can survive the onslaught of foes that storm into the place to protect their ill-gotten goods.

Of all of these levels, few matched the sheer enjoyable chaos the sixth stage's fortress provided. The player runs through the ramparts and into the dungeon-like interior, only to exit the place and run around it — to a dead end? Not for long as a pair of hammer-wielding Cyclopes smash through a wall in search of a fight. After disposing of them, it's back inside (and on top of) the fortress until the stage ends with a tough battle with a goat-headed demon summoned from the depths of hell

Overall Twinkle Tale is a very good shooter that just oozes playability and challenge (you won't see the ending unless you play it in normal mode) that will last quite some time. Fantastic visuals and audio also help make this a winner. A true cult classic.

I have time, at last, to talk about Spirit World #1! So what did I think about the issue and all the Cass within it?

I do like that this series is two-fold where you have both plots where Xanthe/John Constantine are trying to figure out a way into Spirit World and you have Cass venturing into the world itself.

Spirit World itself is a fascinating place because you can have all sorts of wonky mystical creatures inhabit it or have it as another plane of the afterlife. It just works perfectly.  Like these two sisters who pester Cass early on in the issue. The sequence reminded me of a mixture of "The Bride with White Hair" and the "Evil Dead" movies. I almost was expecting a viewpoint from the sister who was pursuing Cass's pov as the latter is dodging her.  Given how she's crackling on how she'll devour her even to the bones.

What fascinates me is how the spirits can tell of her moral qualities and well how it makes her a greater meal. Which writer Alyssa Wong leans heavier when Cass is saved by folks who know of Xanthe and Cass tells them how she got here. It's a little moment but artist Haining captures how slaying the creature still weighs HEAVY on Cass.

It's something overlooked (aka JL Elite), or not shown as much (DCeased: Dead Planet hinted at it but never fully went there).  

Even a mythical creature so many years old and evil, and it still destroys Cass inside that she had killed it.

Once again, Wong just GETS the character of Cass.  In ways that make me squee. Like, part of me hopes we get SOMETHING of Cass's past rearing their head in the Spirit World in good or bad.

I know my friends discussed a theory that the mysterious "Mr. Hong" who shows up might be someone whose a voice Cass recognizes be this bastard.

Honestly? I'd be down with that as it would separate David Cain from the mercs that seems like a ocean of them at this point.

However, my own theory, if someone is gonna show up from Cass's past, would be:

I mean that would be chilling to have a soul you murdered showing up as a spiritual lord in Spirit World.

The action has even consequences for after death they became nastier and more powerful.

The other possibility is well...

I know it's highly not gonna happen. But I just feel like Cass meeting Carolyn would be neat.  You could have the Wu-San sisters being forces both in the Earthly and Spiritual worlds.

I think the reason why I want a Carolyn showing is more due to well Rebirth's lost plot of her being a self-help guru and even in death Carolyn is mending fences.

Anyway, another element I do love is Wong weaving TWO of Cass's other identities.  Both one with a sly mention of Orphan and the other basically being a better Black Bat design.

Then again, I feel this new outfit is a clear homage to fan art attempts of another costume for Cass. But hey it keeps something flowing around her belt area. Even if it isn't a scarf. 😝

As for Po Po and Bowen interest me as both characters remind me of Studio Ghibli characters. I think for Bowen it's the mark across his chest we see.

It highly reminds me of the demonic mark Ashitaka had in Princess Mononoke.  Is it a sign of he was feasted by Spirit World creatures before Po Po saved him?

Po Po is another character that fascinates me as well as she (and Bowen) are connections to Xanthe's past. I like how it's all connected and the way Wong spins the stories as we learn one aspect of the new character's past and we get another with a cliffhanger.

Not only that but teases of just when Xanthe became nonbinary as her mother deadnames them by issue's end.

Like, I'm glad Wong is showing the origin of Xanthe in full both in glimpses on the Cass side, while also in their attempt to save her.

This was a REALLY good first issue that continues introducing a really intriguing new character to the DC mystical mythos (with their own area to play with) that intertwines with Cassandra Cain and something that the character just well barely has ever dealt with: mystic hijinks.

Like we sort of did (in the tail end of her ongoing) aka one of the worst stories involving the character. So I'm glad Wong is taking something that was once a negative for Cass writers and finally going back to the well with a better story.

The fact that so many fans are talking about it. Shows just how much Wong has got us, and they've barely even brushed the surface of Spirit World and even gone into full details with Xanthe.

The only negative, I could even think is the most minor of nit-picks. In that, I hope Bowen doesn't become another male love interest for Cass. He does look a little smitten of her with what she's done. Buuuuut...

Given the little glances we have of him, I don't think Wong will do that, unlike other writers in the past. I think that's why many are thinking that angle. I think Wong is going for subversion here.

Regardless, I highly enjoyed this series and if you're looking for a new angle of DC mystic this really was something! BUY THIS BOOK AND SPIRIT WORLD #2 NEXT MONTH!

Some things are odder than Hollywood. Maude Brown had returned from Nova Roma, the hidden Roman city underneath Libya. She missed her radio fame, she claimed, and was back to take over Hollywood with a new picture: the first-ever sword and surfboard action musical. To that effect, she had brought in Canadian race car scion Maple Saint Lee, and her trusted legal counsel, Tacito Uriel Velasco, a.k.a. the Jade Jaguar. Also lounging in the studio were Devika, Giula Santinella, and Gyatso. Maude served hors d’oeuvres on the soundstage, showing off a weird mystic necklace nobody could place. You might think, aren’t Tacito and Steel Eagle extremely competitive within their niches? Well, only partially. (In fact, at one point Devika asked who is tougher and the Jade Jaguar said “Steel Eagle” without a second’s hesitation.) Anyway, with butler Aldous’s leg mysteriously in a cast, it was up to the group to save the picture. They wouldn’t mind finding the screenwriter, Stanley Brewster? His bungalow had been broken into a few days ago and he hadn’t been seen since. The group raced to the scene. The woman was smushed by the cabinet, oddly, and exploded in a spray of oily blood! This is where the redundancy came in handy. The Steel Eagle and Jade Jaguar mopped the floor with the roughnecks. Glowing fists, diving sweeps, chain chokes, rising knees, all thrown around like fake compliments at a bachelorette party. At the ladies' request, the pair even did a cool double jump-kick into the boss’s locked door, sending it flying into the far wall. The next part was much less cool, as Maude took out her purse pistol and tried to blow Devika away! Devi rolled to cover, and the group easily overpowered the radio starlet. A suspicious Gyatso ripped off her necklace, and she demanded her servants fetch her royal gown! …Wait, was this whole mission from someone kidnapped and mind-controlled?

I decided to dye some yarn for a crochet sweater I want to make. This is the single ply super wash wool base I use. It's fingering weight, so I need to hold double for the pattern's DK.

I did my best to try and plan how I dyed the yarn to work well for holding the two colors. (Because I guess just dyeing 6 of the same color was too boring? Idk) I've never tried to dye for a speciffic project or pattern before, so it was a bit of a challenge.

I had to re-do half of it because I made it too dark. (As in, I grabbed 3 undyed and started over to replace the darker 3 skeins)

I know these look almost the same, and the photos make it even more so... but one is mostly blueish green with some purple and the other is mostly purple with some blue. I promise. Lol

Caked up there is a more obvious difference, one looking aqua ish and the other purple.

I can't wait to share progress on this project, as they look so pretty together!!!

I started working on a dragon!! The reason I bought the book.

I don't do a lot of amigurumi, so it's been kinda challenging, but doable! It's super lumpy so far, but most of it is from mistakes I was too lazy to go back for. Which is better than mistakes I didn't know about or understand how to fix...

I'm really glad I'm starting with a redheart acrylic, it is surprisingly forgiving for how often I've had to frog rows. I'm a bit concerned about how this will come together because of how lumpy it is.

A stroll through Magnolia Park

One of the weird ironies of living in the US and having family, friends and colleagues abroad is the vast, iniquitous gap in vaccine availability based on where you live, and, more particularly, whether you live in a poor country or a rich one.

Vaccine Apartheid is a global terror and horror, but that’s not the “ironic” part. That would be the American vaccine deniers who have effectively killed the dream of herd immunity, and taken anti-vax from a threat to public health to a threat to civilization itself.

The way this manifests is often quirky and personal — like the news that some of my beloved cousins in Canada and the US have become anti-vax, anti-mask conspiracists, losing themselves in the Qanon cult.

They’re never far from my thoughts, but doubly so yesterday. You see, here in LA, we have high levels of vaccination and a general lifting of restrictions that — in contrast to the premature “re-openings” elsewhere that led to lethal outbreaks — feel prudent and safe.

That’s given my neighborhood — Burbank’s Magnolia Park — a new vitality. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is a couple miles’ worth of pedestrian friendly, retail, dominated by independent and idiosyncratic retailers that draw people from all over the city.

Many of these did not survive the pandemic, but a heartening number of them held on, and it’s great to see crowds out there on a Saturday. Yesterday, I rode my bike up to one end of the strip, outside Porto’s, the regionally famous Cuban sandwich shop, locked up and strolled.

Magnolia Park’s retail is dominated by vintage clothes and memorabilia stores, a legacy of our proximity to the studios (Disney, Warner and Universal are all a few minutes’ drive), which created demand for wardrobe and set pieces, and a supply of post-shoot surplus items.

It’s also got some great restaurants, like The New Deal. Unfortunately, thanks to Burbank’s antiquated blue laws, almost no one has a real liquor license (wine and beer licenses are easy to get, but spirits licenses are all but impossible).

The sole exception on the strip is…unfortunate. Tinhorn Flats (AKA “Tinfoil Hats”) is a fake saloon with a nice back garden that had one of those rare liquor license, and paired it with mediocre bar food. The best thing about it is its fantastic neon sign.

The worst thing about is that it’s owned by mask-denying, covid-denying far right Trumpian conspiracists who defied public health orders, flooded their social media with culture war bullshit, and became a rallying point for every Bircher, Klansman and Qanon in the Valley.

I do mean “rallying point.” As Tinhorn Flats waged war — installing generators after its power was cut, removing the boards over the door, etc — it hosted weekly Sat gatherings of unmasked, unhinged conspiracists waving American flags and signs decrying “Hollywood pedos.”

They’re still out there, every Sat. If you’re one of the many people who comes to our great family owned grocery Handy Market (whose neon is better than Tinhorn’s!) for their weekly Saturday parking-lot BBQ, you’ve seen ’em, screaming about frazzledrip and “small business.”

They were there yesterday, between my stops at The Mystic Museum and Halloween Town, two of our three goth superstores (the third being Dark Delicacies) — Burbank will costume you, sell you an articulated bat skeleton and fill your bookshelves.

It’s such an odd juxtaposition, to be walking around a neighborhood that is making a brave recovery from the lockdown, stopping in at these improbable, scrappy shops, and then walk past these superspreaders screaming in front of the chainlink-surrounded derelict bar.

But my first fully vaccinated Saturday stroll down Magnolia was rescued by a discovery at Halloween Town: the discovery of Round2’s “Haunted Manor” model kits, cheeky remakes of the classic “Zap/Action” MPC Haunted Mansion kits of the 1970s.

The original models were from the high-water mark of Haunted Mansion merch, the era of the UV-paint-doped “changing portrait” cards, the magnificent board-game, and Randotti skulls, models and plaques.

They ingeniously incorporated rubber bands into their interiors to create pop-up effects, like a corpse that popped out a grave, causing the poor grave-digger to spin about. Between the kinetics, glow-in-the-dark plastic, and a good paint job, these were just fantastic.

Even if you never owned one of these kits, if you read comics in the 70s and early 80s, you can’t have missed their distinctive, brilliantly conceived full-page comics ads. Small wonder that these kits sell for stupid money in the secondary market.

The Take2 models (sold under the Polar Lights mark) are not quite replicas of the MPC models (presumably they couldn’t get a license), but they’re fabulous reinterpretations of the vintage designs and I love the renaming (i.e. ”Play It Again, Sam” becomes “Play It Again, Tom”).

Alas, I couldn’t find any sign of a Polar Lights remake of the MPC Zap/Action Pirates of the Caribbean models (whose ads were even better!).

After all that, I confess I didn’t buy the kits (though I may go back today and rectify that). My daily work-load is so high that I’m lucky if I can manage to carve out half an hour every couple days to read a book, let alone put together and paint a model.

But of all the aspirational hobbies I’m wishing I was engaging in, assembling these models tops the list. Building a “Grave Robber’s Demise” kit wouldn’t quite be a “nature is healing” moment, but I know it would give me joy.

I recently learned that there's a species of very small bats that build tents from leaves and live there and I. Could. Not. Resist. Meet my new OC Heidi the Bat (get it? Hide-y, hehe), in Sonic style. She is a Honduran white bat. Despite her youthful, cutesy and innocent appearance (as well as her small size), she is older (around 13-15 years old) and more capable than she looks.She is a skilled builder and survivalist, able to build things from, utilize and even control (in a very limited way) a wide variety of leafy plants, including - of course - tents and camouflage. She is said to be a relative of Rouge - whether she is her cousin or her niece is yet to be determined - and she shares her relative's love of adventure and sparkly things as well as being potentially talented in the way of espionage if one is to take her skills into account.

Gets along well with the younger members of Sonic's cast, including Cream (she's quite a well-mannered girl, if a bit simple-minded in the more mundane things and can be blunt at times, she likes Chao as well, plus Vanilla teaches her to cook), Tails (both love building things), Marine (loves to explore, though she doesn't like sea travel all that much, as she feels exposed in all that wide open space) and Charmy (both have plant-related powers and are bundles of energy, but don't always see eye to eye due to their age difference and Charmy's loud personality).

As mentioned before, due to her size (she's about the same size as Charmy, even a bit smaller), she is weaker and has a smaller wing span. She can, however, climb any surface that has greenery on it (even ceilings!) using her claws and boots. enhance her vision even further with her goggles (they are actually Tails' old night-vision goggles he had in Tails' Adventure that he gave to her) and has a heightened sense of smell that allows her to detect some things even faster than Rouge, Knuckles or Tikal can (though she has a harder time detecting some things - like the Chaos Emeralds - and others she can't detect at all).

Her overall frail stature makes her a very, very poor fighter. When she was on her way to see the Mystic Ruins' pyramid, she got attacked by a weak stray Badnik and crashed in the jungle not far from Big and Froggy's home. Big found her and carried her to Tails' house to get help. And the rest, as they say, is history. I hope you enjoyed both my art, my character and the little story I just made up for her! I want to discuss something I have found a bit disturbing. This content is being labeled as TW/CW for topics of : sexual assault, consent, and implications of  rape.

The world of otome games and dating sims is vast in almost every category. However, I’ve noticed a simple trend in most of them which seems to be a problem. Many seem to disregard consent in favor of action between dataeble characters. 

In Obey Me, Lucifer (who the devs often push) is known to disregard consent. His interactions are often sexual and even when it isn’t he still finds a way to make it. Many players found the Vampire event to be a large issue, Where Lucifer still goes after the MC, even when he is told no. Some chats are a bit strange as in the one where MC is allowed to pick a place to go to. If the MC chooses the clothing store he bring up “I know you’re dying to take your clothes off for me” (This is a paraphrase). Even though he is the avatar of pride, this is not good territory and shouldn’t be used as an excuse. The current Angelic event has him acknowledge that the MC may not be ok with him shoving them onto the bed. This premise of the event, was the brothers become more holy and less of themselves. For, the devs to implement Lucifer taking in the MC’s feelings of the situation is a problematic situation. That is to say: Lucifer is only wise to consent when his whole being is switched around. This game is gender neutral and I feel this part of it should be a bigger discussion around the current topics as well.   

In Mr Love mobile/ Love and Producer, the player tends to view these situations in dates. While the story line tends to stray from asexual nature, the dates do not hold back. A vast amount of problematic occurrences are from Gavin’s dates. There are so many to recap:  Film Studio date (which the MC is stalked), Relieving date (Mc almost ends up assaulted/implication of possible gang rape), Blazing date (MC is put in revealing clothes for the studio men), and Journey date (MC is sexually harassed by a strange man on the train). The player will also encounter: objectification and child-like treatment from characters all while being sent sexual innuendos by said characters.

The newest game: Court of Darkness, the first chapter involves a understanding of MC may end up assaulted. The game gives the player a prologue which already tells them the MC is going to be treated as a tool and/or doll. Guy, who is the main offender wants to use MC as a tool for a power up. Whereas, Fenn, just wants to fuck the MC. This game off the bat has high objectification, sexual assault, and the avoidance of consent. In the first chapter, MC ends up hurting themself and screaming to escape Guy, who locked them in a room with him. This leads to the MC being thrown into his room, while paralyzed, and miraculously ends up not being raped. While MC ends up being healed by someone who serves Guy, they have a class of “This isn’t right” and “It’s nice I’m being healed now and its kind of my fault I got hurt”. I felt the need to point this out as for the reason discussed above was why MC wound up injured. During the same chapter, MC is taken by Fenn who merely wishes to make them into a fuck toy. MC once again is paralyzed. Unlike with Guy, MC can speak and tell him no. This, MC does do, and Fenn decides to ignore it. 

I cannot stand the bad endings in Mystic Messenger; but, although, some of them appear problematic, it is consensual between both MC and the character.

Many readers of fanfiction call for warnings when a writer makes potential triggering content. These games should provide a content warning in their descriptions as well. The way they get buy without it is the rating: Teens. Rating it for teens means for its sexual implications and not its “these things might make some players extremely upset”. 

This conversation I feel is only brought up when a game makes a mistake with certain choices. I want it to be a larger discussion about how the devs feel comfortable enough to slip in content like that casually and throw it as part of their characters personality. How, so many red flags are implemented in these story lines that many players do not recognize or understand. From the MC being treated like a child while the other characters make sexual innuendos towards them; MC being treated as an object; MC often being ignored; and MC often made as some fuck toy. 

I am aware there could be more depth and detail into this piece. I just need a base to start things off.
