childhood halloween horrors

Long ago, that is, when I was a kid in the 1950's, high tech at Halloween meant glow-in-the-dark paint and cartoons projected on a rickety screen. Unfortunately, for a very little girl these things meant that my first Halloween experiences were really scary and very weird!! First Halloween I remember, I was only four, and my artist mom was going to help me be a ghost! She painted gauze with phosphorus paint, and I was so excited to show my friends. At dusk I ran out wearing the gauzy shroud, but my friends were terrified to see this glowing apparition and all ran away!! I was left under a dank, smelly sheet and couldn't breathe at all! I had to go straight back inside to be rescued, and that was the end of my first Halloween.

My second Halloween memory was even scarier, but taught me an important lesson. When I was seven, I wanted to be a WITCH (of course!!) and was fitted out with long black dress and pointy hat. We went to a Halloween gathering at our local park and scary cartoons were being shown by projector on a big white screen. In the dark crowded room I became entranced by the flickering images. Horrid bitey ant monsters were eating through a dam and over-running a town, and I became caught in the most vivid nightmare of my life, as they swarmed out to eat me alive!! I became hysterical, and the show had to be stopped for the weeping little girl. But I had an important lesson in the power of trance, and went home impressed by the real magic that had happened to me that night.

I NEED TO COSPLAY 1895 VELMA.

I haven't sewed any garb for many years, but luckily my costuming mentor @mysteryoftheuniverse will soon be here to guide me!

Of course given my age, it may be more appropriate to cosplay what 1895 Velma would look like in the 1920s or 30s.

If I were one to care about propiety of course, lol.

Plus a special bonus video that was the first song I chose before realizing it was supposed to be the first five from random shuffle, Pierangelo Bertoli e Tazenda "Spunta la luna dal monte". This is a contrapuntal rendition of "Disamparados", a beautiful Sardinian song by Gino (aka Luigi) Marielli sung alongside with Italian lyrics by Pierangelo Bertoli. It placed 5th at Sanremo 1991, and I love it sooo much. The video below has the lyrics in both languages overlaid onscreen, which is great for a langblr girl like me so I can read along.

Lexa’s Locks #1

Alas, my hair has grown more gray and fine, with a good bit less up front. Be that as it may, I do have some very simple go-to styles for lounging at home.

The most basic include a simple ponytail or braid. Slightly more involved is this pencil-bun, which @mysteryoftheuniverse​ taught me a while back:

I can do it with a single pencil, but by using two, I can pull one out to jot down a quick note without it falling apart!

(Also, looks like it’s time to trim the wispy stuff at the nape...)
