Hong Lu: The Vessel Theory

Yep. I’m back. This is happening.

I just wanna say first and foremost, I have to give the MOTHER of all shoutouts to Netz (@beanie0bird) for both helping with the theory as a whole and hearing me out throughout its gradual development. He's my Hong Lu expert and I absolutely would not have gotten here without him. ily bestie 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂 /p

I should also probably shout out one @lu-is-not-ok, their own Hong Lu theories were a pretty big inspiration for this one and I encourage y’all to check out their posts, they go way more in-depth than I think I’ll ever be capable of lol

OK, theory time. The Vessel Theory at its core is that Hong Lu is, in actuality, some kind of body double or clone of either his original Jia Baoyu 1.0 body, but with 1.0's trademark Jade incorporated into his eye. The idea was essentially brought around so the Jia family could keep their Most Specialest Lil Boy™️ around for forever, and every time a Baoyu 1.0 dies, they make another vessel for his Jade, take the Jade out, put it back in the new vessel, and act like nothing ever happened because they're rich and rich people can just get away with shit like that. My guess as to what Xichun and Wei are doing out and about is that the method used to bring Hong Lu into the world is faulty in some way, which would explain why it goes dim in C7, that's probably a hardware bug of sorts. Either that, or maybe Baoyu 1.0 is starting to deteriorate himself after so many body replacements. It also explains why Hermann roped Jia Huan into her endeavors; the Human Dough from Canto 6 definitely shows Hermann's interest in tampering with the boundaries of mortality in some sense.

The catch is, though, Baoyu 1.0 – his consciousness trapped in the Jade, at least – is still aware of all of this, even though he can't control the bodies he gets inserted into; though I can imagine his vessels can at least feel his presence or thoughts in some quantifiable shape or form. Explains that little "am I the dreamer" monologue from Hong Lu, and why the name of his Canto in other languages can be translated as "All I can do is watch it"; that's all Baoyu 1.0 can do while his consciousness is stuck in the Jade.

Speaking of which, Hong Lu, when he's starting out as the new Baoyu 1.0 vessel, isn't really adjusting super well to the expectations of being the new prodigal son, not to mention the abusive siblings, but Granny's a little nicer to him and reckons "Ah he probably needs to get to know his surroundings a little bit first, tell ya what sonny, you go out and see the world then come back and we'll see how you fare then" and sends the lad on his way. He bumps into Faust at some point. The rest is history. At least, I *think* it's his grandma who gives him the whole sightseeing mission; could be wrong.

Now then, as for what I think this all means for Hong Lu is going, Netz and I had some hiccups piecing this together, I don't think either of us have a concrete grip on the overarching theme of the book ourselves. My prevailing theory is that because the book itself ends with Jia Baoyu 1.0 becoming a monk and isolating himself, and OUR Baoyu 1.0 is already doing that to some degree in the Jade, Hong Lu's arc will be coming more out of his shell and opening up to the Sinners more about his emotions and opinions. He stops living in a dream world where he doesn't have to worry about anything, and can now utilize his experiences in The City to live life beyond the boundaries of what his family wants for him. I also really hope he pushes back against his abusers some, just to bring it all home. Maybe we get the actual Baoyu 1.0 out of his Jade and he takes over for Hong Lu? Maybe Hong Lu has to move on without Baoyu 1.0? Guess we'll just have to find out.

Again, I can't say I have a whole lot of evidence from, say, in-game dialogue or cross-referencing DOTRC to back me up, but then again, I have a Hong Lu expert on speed dial, it's not like I *can't* find anything.

What I *DO* have, however, is EGOs.

Starting with the big one; Land Of Illusion. My hypothesis is that the EGO art is a hyperbolic depiction of Baoyu 1.0 languishing in the Jade, with the rest of the world lying just outside with him now unable to affect it in any way. It also doesn't help that the walls of the room pictured are red; he's literally trapped in a Red Chamber. That's his dream world in the book supposedly; Baoyu 1.0's retreating to his happy place to escape the pressure of always having to be the Most Specialest Jia Ever:tm:. Five Gloom for wallowing in his melancholic solitude, and a Sloth on the side for willfully ignoring his forced responsibilities.

Either that, or it could be depicting Baoyu 1.0 at some point during his FIRST life, before all the body double shenanigans.

The rest of these will be shorter, I promise.

I've seen analyses for Ambling Pearl that describe the Abno as representing "a place made by you and for you," so there's a dead-on hint right there. Can't say I have much else, but at the very least I like how a common theme with the Abno is that it often just gets bored and walks away if you don't directly do anything to it. More on that in a second.

Netz helped me out with Soda; it's escapism for one, and apparently in LobCorp, Wellcheers rewards you for getting good research results on it. That definitely lines up with having to maintain the prodigal son image, at least to me.

Dimension Shredder represents a lot of things, but chief among them to me is a feeling of being lost. It's a little vague, sure, but I can definitely see Baoyu 1.0 not knowing what to do with his life given how he's not in control of it anymore. That, and Hong Lu was *literally* sent to wander around The City to get more used to it. Netz also tells me it represents not being able to keep up a facade, which DEFINITELY scans, although I couldn't tell you how the Abno represents that lol.

Roseate Desire — Rosie, as Netz and I call it — represents Baoyu 1.0's repressed and locked-away emotions, especially given that his mouth is tied up in the EGO art.

Lasso is… fairly loose, all things considered, though I do think there are some ties specifically to the apple from Rose Hunter's encounter. I'm sure we all know what it's implied that apple will become later, and Rose Hunter is actively enforcing that prophecy. An aspect of the EGO is being willing to let bad things happen so long as you feel it's what is best. Granted, in Baoyu 1.0's case, him letting the siblings treat his vessels like shit is beyond his volition, but a clue's a clue. Plus, if nothing else, we can always tie it back to Hong Lu and how nonchalant he seems to be regarding his family and the abuse they put him through in the past.

Lastly there's my personal favorite, Frog Lu (AKA Cavernous Wailing). There's… a lot, lmao.

One: Disobedience. I mean, I reckon getting sent off by your gramgram might go against the family grain some if they had no idea about it. That, and as we've established, Baoyu 1.0 is getting a little tired of the pressure to be perfect all the time.

Two: Obeying the wishes of family after said disobedience. This one I'm a tiny bit fuzzier on, but you could say that Baoyu 1.0 still does feel love for his family, or at least his elders, despite all he's been through, the hangup is he wants to express it in his own way without being forced into it.

Three: Wanting space to tackle your emotions yourself. This is where I was going with that thing about Ambling Pearl wandering off. Leave it alone, it leaves you alone. Let the toad cry, and you get an EGO gift. Baoyu 1.0 stays in the Jade and is thus the only person who can actually grapple with his feelings. Hell, he gets sent out into The City *alone* in an attempt to better his understanding. This man just wants a safe space to cry, goddamn it.

I’ll definitely be developing this further along as we go through the next two Intervallos.

Despite his accent on site (put on him bc I want my sweet lil guy to be pretty.) He actually very clearly visually resembles his parents, clumsily painted face to match his father, a clown ruff and dirty fingerless gloves- children's toys made of bone and scrap tied to strings wound around his wings like both of the Harlequins' bone chimes, and his own little cleaver and sub-weapons, though the cleaver is clearly a blunted, adorned cooking cleaver, and where swords of bone and flesh should sit on his parents and siblings he has the two missing throwing knives from Pig's bandolier. (He thinks his dad doesn't know. his dad knows.)

He is sealed shut with thin gilt lines of metal, though it's not always gold trailing the length of his belly, it's typically whatever Pig has on hand at the time after the kid uses his powers.

He has a little backpack for his art supplies! It has his name on it and plenty of space for crayons and paper and sometimes, if he's good, and Sow wants to piss off her situationship, he gets glitter and glue.

Runt is only about as tall as Pig's hip in anthro form, and operatively an 8-10 year old human as far as intelligence goes. He is constantly dirty, sticky, or covered in some kind of goop he's run through.

He's missing teeth- they're gonna grow back in though.

It is unclear as to why Runt has not aged the way his siblings did, but for the sake of his safety, his parents have elected to keep him with them, if he's bound to be a child forever then they will simply have to care for him forever.

Unlike his nearly-topless parents his little clown costume has those overalls with the puffy pants and sleeves and jingly bells.

His wings don't appear to be completely normal- depicting reaching, clamoring tentacles grappling toward a dark sun high above.

The metal sealing him down the centre is magically infused, and while his family tends to stay tight lipped about why, those who have chased Godfalls alongside Pig and Sow swear they've seen the boy open up down the length of it not unlike a mouth, lined with thousands of teeth to become... something else.

We're not worrying about that he's just a baby.

Why do you think so many current ST/byler theories have devolved to the point of delusion? Like, so many of these theories being put out now are more along the lines of “the phrasing of this one sentence/ looking to the left is obviously a reference to this one specific obscure movie from the early 70s that has nothing to do with the premise or themes of Stranger Things and has never been properly referenced in the show but it means that actually Will’s disappearance is really a reference to the little boy bomb in ww2 and so Lonnie is the secret true villain of the show and Will is the super specialist bean to ever special, something something byler endgame. Like, so many of the current theories are making wild reaches with nonsensical evidence and flimsy connections that don’t support the theorist’s conclusion and yet these “theorists” try to act like they’ve made a genius revelation and if you don’t believe their nonsense you’re somehow just dumb and willfully ignorant??? I’ve genuinely never seen another fandom with such weak and outright delusional theories being treated as obvious and factual by so many people.

But to answer your question, it's a perfect storm of conditions: Dunning-Kreuger effect, content drought, echo chamber, confirmation bias, and the pervasive, consuming need to be right and special.

They've fallen in a black hole, Anon. They need to be right, but they don't have the humility to go "what if I'm not right?", which would "save" them in most cases. I know that's my go-to. I try to hold Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's words in mind: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth". That means the burden is on the theorist to prove all the more-probable theories wrong. None of the folks you're talking about do that. They don't check themselves. They just pick a theory that makes Will the most specialest victim to ever victim and run with it...and they use misinformed takes about a very real mental disorder to do so, all while ignoring the actual, canonical appearances of said disorder.

Although, in their defense, I can't say I haven't referenced an obscure off-theme movie in my day (Pumaman, critically acclaimed "worst superhero movie ever", was on the ST4 board, and it actually has a surprising amount of similarities to ST4, escpecially re: El)...but in my experience it always comes down to genre.

They aren't drawing specific easter eggs from 20 different superhero movies or 20 different "alien experiment gone wrong" movies or 20 different time travel movies as individuals. When you watch the movies, you see that movies from the same genre offer the same references, even when they're not on the movie board. It's them saying "hey, we did our research on how xyz type of plot line is written because we're including that kind of plot line", not "we pulled this exact line from Pumaman at minute 57.13, and this specific reference from Who Framed Roger Rabbit at minute 12.49, and, and, and..."

That's why they appear to be referencing every movie ever: they're drawing on the plot beats of the genre. They appear to be referencing every changeling plot because there's a basic changeling plot line. There's the bones of a time travel plot. An alien experiment gone wrong. There are some specific movies that do get specifically referenced (like Changeling 1980, Terminator, Silence of the Lambs, etc), but the onus is on us to recognize the difference between a specific movie reference or a genre-common reference.

People also have to be wary of the "what common plots do they have as references...that they are planning to subvert?" For example: The Good Son—"evil" little boy who tries to kill his family so that he could do whatever he wants forever—which people used to say that our Henry was pure evil since childhood...even when the subtext of the show didn't support it. Lo and behold, in comes TFS to say that Henry was a really, really good kid in a bad situation. In comes the VR to tell us Henry loved his family and was utterly heartbroken by his mother trying to evict him from said family. <- All of which could be deduced from ST4 canon.

Another part of the issue, one that I've talked about since the dawn of time (2022) is going in with a theory and working to make all your evidence fit that theory...especially when you then try to make "evidence" out of things that are connected to other plots/disconnected from your theory. The confirmation bias will get you every time (especially with a theory like DID, which makes it really easy to get lost in the weeds in a really uninformed/pop-psychology way).

For example, taking all of the "Lonnie stealing baby Jesus from the nativity scene" bit in TFS and making it about Will...as if Patty isn't right there having been stolen as a baby. As if they don't have a running gag of her spooking Henry, him going "Jesus Christ!", and her responding "No, Patty Newby". As if they don't give Patty and Henry insane amounts of religious coding re: the Holy Trinity, which links both of them to the UD/Mindflayer, who also has stupid amounts of God/Heaven subtext baked into it. As if Henry doesn't have literal stigmata. As if changeling Patties in Henry's visions aren't the literal human mouthpiece of God the Mindflayer. As if Will was ANYWHERE in any of that! As if the Will references aren't reserved for Brenner?? But you never see them discuss that!

Alas, anon...It's clearly that Lonnie kidnapped Will to rape and kill him. And also Henry is an alter of Will. And Will is also the Demogorgon, who is also Lonnie, who "got" Will. Meaning Will got himself? So did Lonnie rape Will, causing his DID, or did Will, as the Lonniegorgon, rape...himself? And give himself DID?

Another fun instance, and this one was sent to me recently, was a theorist defining CATTLE only to completely abandon the definition.

Here's a challenge. Say something genuinely good about Scott (It can either be cc!Scott or c!Scott)

c!Scott cares very deeply about people near him, even if I find him misguided everything he does is well-intentioned and done in the name of love and that in of itself is worthy of being called good.

He's a quick-thinker and smart enough to know when a lie will land, and has the confidence to keep up a lie when there's pushback (e.g. when Joel tried to steal FH's cows in 3L). Alot of the little things he does, like building his base on the corner of the map, are also indicative of his shrewdness.

He's very observant and knows how to let people know he's not to be messed with while not pissing everyone off or painting himself as the villain and thus putting a target on himself. In Wild Life Episode 4, Skizz compares him to the toughest inmate in prison and Etho says that killing Scott is hard, showing that he knows how to discourage people from targetting him.

But he's not all brains and no brawn, Scott is no slouch in a fight and he's aware of this, but doesn't go parading it around because he's smart enough to keep it on the down low. He's especially scary at long range with a bow, as he seems to have a habit of panicking in melee but he is still I would say one of the strongest PvPers in the cast.

He's adorable and a riot in the rare instances he drops the "mum friend" role, like when he's up to mischief with Pearl in LL or having a "boys will be boys" off with Joel.

cc!Scott I actually find pretty funny but not for the reasons he intends. He's at his best when he's exasperated at other people's antics, plays a great 'straight man' (ironic) in pretty much any dynamic (Scott + Joel in particular I think play off of eachother really well)

He's politically not-that-weird. Which is a low bar but I appreciate it.

I can appreciate his sense of style at times. Here's some of my favs.

And finally he plays Minecraft in a way that changed my brain chemistry forever, made me make an unreasonable amount of art and writing, and I would genuinely not be the same artist without him. So I think I owe him a little bit of thanks.

There's probably more I could go on with especially re: c!Scott but I really like that one tumblr post abt the camp counselor and how good traits and bad traits aren't independent of eachother but intertwined and often two sides of the same coin, as alot of those things I listed for c!Scott are things that directly correlate to his worst, most insane traits. 🙏🙏🙏 thank you so much, and a please accept my preemptive apology for the essay this will probably become...

How I feel about this character: I was saving this one for last from the batch of asks I got for this game, because the Outsider is my specialest boy of all time 🥹 I played D1 and was like, 'oooh how fun and sexy, a mysterious Void god!' but then D2 happened with the whole Omelas-ass reveal and my brain melted like a caterpillar in its chrysalis into a soup of sadness and suffering from which the beautiful butterfly of my borderline-unhealthy obsession with the Outsider emerged. You can't just give me a character who's a metaphor for isolation, expulsion, and profound loneliness, and not expect me to pick him up and put him in my pocket forever. Do I project onto him? Over-identify, even? Yeah, shut up, so whaaaaaat? Aren't all of us trapped in a Void of our own, really? Who here hasn't been forever altered by the cruelty of others? And who among us isn't constantly sticking their fingers in the pie of life, poking around in there, hoping against hope to find some glimmer of goodness and hope and joy? Who isn't sick of all this shit and just wants to rest?? Ha ha as you can see I'm totally normal about him.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Just Corvo. He fascinates the Outsider, he surprises him, he's the catalyst for the kind of moments the Outsider says he waits for (this is, crucially, a line you only get from him after the low chaos Burrows elimination). I think the Outsider's been searching for someone who won't disappoint him for such a long time, someone he could give a piece of himself to who won't turn around and do something terrible with it. Like.... Come on! That's it, for me. To love is to give yourself away a little bit, to be surprised when the person who receives that gift treats it with the seriousness and consideration it deserves. And that's Corvosider 🖤🖤🖤

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Billie's whole journey to find him, and the understanding she comes to about him means so much to me.... 100% they become friends post-DotO. Letting him live is her way of letting herself live, to put her past behind her and prove to herself, once and for all, that she's more than a killer. And for the Outsider, she's the one person who could best understand the truth of what he is, how he was made into what he is, because in a way she's had the same done to her. The world fucked them both over so hard and forced them into these untenable positions that caused them both so much pain.... Oh god I have to stop thinking about this. They're best bros for life, next question!

My unpopular opinion about this character: I definitely prefer D2 Outsider over D1. I know ppl were very invested into the whole whale god thing, but his human sacrifice backstory was what really did it for me. Plus I love the way Robin Lord Taylor voiced him - the Hollows speeches in DotO make me so fucking emotional... He does a great job of going from bitchy to breathily earnest, and the emotional whiplash that gives me is very fun. Plus the way he scrunches his nose a little sometimes! Aaaaaa D2 Outsider my favorite son!

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Obviously I really really really wanted to see what he would get up to after he became human again, cause uh, I wrote a novel about it lol.... But one thing I really wanted to see, that I didn't even do myself, was for the Outsider to go meet Sokolov, finally, as a mortal. I think that would be such great closure for both of them: for Sokolov to see indisputable proof that the power he was chasing was terrible and cruel (something he realized for himself in his final years, but meeting the Outsider would have driven this home beautifully), and for the Outsider to conclusively put away his old fickle relationship with humanity. For both of them to see each other as human beings, to really understand how fucked up the way they related to each other was. I'd love that!

Danny is a fantastic main character and the kind of archetype I love to see, esp s1-s2 Danny. In s3 he got screwed over by BH's determination to make him into a comic book superhero, but even still, you see the elements that make him so loveable and relatable

I am a hardcore proponent of the Danny Is The Only True Half-Ghost headcanon. Also Ghost King AU is canon to me

Reign Storm, for me, will always come out on top over TUE, especially in terms of Danny development. Yes, TUE is great for showing us the dark path that can await Danny should he stray from the one he's on, and it's great for making Danny come to terms with that, but I think the introduction of Dan and the aborted timeline overshadows most Danny development (no pun intended). And even though this post is about Danny, TUE also lacks in development for the rest of the cast (save for Jazz probably). Reign Storm, on the other hand, while we get dazzled with the world building and lore potential, still makes its mark as a huge turning point in Danny's development. It's his first real, huge test as a defender of not just Amity Park, and it's the first true test of how strong his character and convictions are. Possibly my favorite bit of dialogue from the whole series (that I have a nasty habit of referencing in my fics) is right before he goes to face Pariah Dark, when Tucker tries to tell Danny it's not his fault and he shouldn't feel so bad, and Danny responds with "Maybe not, but it is my responsibility." That just about perfectly sums up the kind of person Danny is and shows just how pure his heart is. Yes, he's still a kid who does selfish, irresponsible things and makes bad choices, but at the end of the day, when it really matters most, he's going to actively choose, without hesitation, to do the right thing. That's what makes him so compelling (one of these days I should do a thorough analysis of Reign Storm)

This boy, as fictional as he is, will always hold a special place in my heart. He's probably my favorite character in any piece of media ever, and that is not an exaggeration

I know that clothes ≠ gender but sometimes I feel like I'm faking and I'm not a "true" genderfluid person, because I really do like dresses and frilly clothes and girl-ish stuff in general… But sometimes I like to wear them even in my masc days, and I feel like I don't have the right to ask people to refer to me with he/him pronouns because of it…

so how to deal with it?

disclaimer that often it takes some time to get over internalized transphobia, just keep working at it and reminding yourself that you are valid and can be whoever you want to be. forever.

ok first of all: everything gendered is totally arbitrary. there is nothing that is inherently masculine or feminine, technically. humans just like to make categories and put labels on things even when there's no true meaning or reason behind it. if you lived in a different country or a different time period, different things would be considered masculine. different things would be considered feminine. it truly doesn't matter in the scheme of who you are. whether you're a girl who likes tech or a guy who collects american girl dolls, you're still your gender.

second of all: do a little thought exercise for me and think of it in terms of other people. flip the genders - for instance, if a girl was really into weightlifting and other "masculine" hobbies, she'd just be a tomboy or butch girl. you would still respect her as a girl, right? and if you knew a guy who likes frills and pretty things, wouldn't you still respect him as a guy? why should it be any different for you? i mean this in a completely positive way - you are not the specialest person in the world, and that's a good thing. and i have to tell myself this too lmao. there is nothing that makes you so fundamentally different from other people that you don't deserve your gender and identity respected regardless of how you present.

third of all: look for cis men who are really feminine. look for cis men who are just kinda feminine. look for feminine men. find media with gender-non-conforming characters. there are plenty of them. number one: it will make you feel more normal. number two: would you question their identity because of how they present or what they like? no. at least i hope not lol.

fourth, maybe: create OCs that are like you. create art about your experience. find other people who are genderfluid and like feminine things. find friends who you know will accept and respect your identity. remind yourself that you deserve to be respected.

p.s. my younger brother has a bed full of plushies, wears makeup sometimes, and owns a corset that im lowkey jealous of but i can't steal bcos we don't wear the same size *pouts grumpily*. my ex-boyfriend liked skirts and split dyed his hair white and red. boys are all different. you're as valid as a boy/masc person (when you are one) as everyone else.

hahaha yeah part of why I fell for him was because I immediately realized his JP VA was the same as Clayman and. Well. Yep. FKEWJHFJKEW that guy voices a lot of the same types of characters I would say. His EN VA is also amazing though. Both of them have very handsome voices and they make Ainosuke sound delightfully queer, but also very very dangerous, which is very hot. His laugh is. Wow. I think waking up together in bed the morning after the wedding. They've spent like. I forget my own timeline but a significant number of months having to appear perfect and chaste in front of Ainosuke's aunts while truly fucking around behind the scenes but like...unable to indulge in simple things like cuddles because they don't really get to be alone alone. After the wedding and they finally get to share a bed...and be alone and themselves...it's just really good.

oushirou's been my most beloved, specialest, best boy since my first year in college. i was working my way through the games, and i saw his profile in some artbook scans, and i went... who the FUCK is this guy??? KAJSNKDJN. i hated his design so much; it didn't fit with the rest of the series's designs.

but he immediately won me over as a side character in the pc game, and then i was Doomed the second i booted up to play the PSP port with the added oushirou route (our 13yr anniversary is the day i started posting about playing his route lol). i became The Oushirou Guy™ in the eng fandom from that point on ;; and, of course, now i'm like "i need MORE characters who look like this guy, RIGHT NEOW" kjsnfkjn.

and then a year later -- 12 years ago tomorrow -- the last game released AND, FINALLY, he had his own karedanna cd! a fandom friend sent a rip to myself and my also-oushirou-lover friend, as we were waiting for ours to ship... and he proposes in it. my friend and i both made this day the wedding anniversary in commemoration. i even have some ancient joke art i made on the release day itself LMAO

i love him so much more than i think i let on; ren's my main right now, so that's what people know me for, but oushirou really is The Blueprint for me.

he's so self-driven. he could have lived a cushy, comfortable life following the family trade as a western fortune teller, but he would rather throw that -- and an unealthy relationship with his family -- away so he could follow his dreams of being a photographer and journalist.

and he's loyal. after his life is saved by another student (kazuki), and he realizes kazuki will be held back due to spending too many days recovering from the injuries he incurred, he makes sure he's also held back a year so he can play as kazuki's right-hand-man during the remainder of their time at seigetsu academy.

also like... ngl, him being a scorpio is like 👀 he's a freak like me LMAOOOO we can be like "every zodiac girlie hates our pussiessss" together. 💖

oh. and then of course he's the Ambiguously Queer Character of the series. he's a little fruity w it in general, he loves crossdressing, he's flirty with kazuki, homare, and shiki, he's stated outright that his love for kazuki and tsukiko are equal and he can't decide between them, and his fashion sense is just a little cherry on top ksjdnfk.
