Witches, I'm going to need you all to learn to discern the type of source you're getting your information from, and what kind of biases are associated with it. Don't just gobble it up because it's a "historical source" or from some sort of anthropological source either.
Historical sources are great. But if the person you're taking as an authority to learn from, is someone originally from a different country and culture to the one you intend to learn, someone that talks about it in third person all the time, practically reading word for word from a christian missionary's manuscript about pre-christian traditions and beliefs, and a translation at that? because they admit that don't even speak the native language of that tradition or culture...?
They may be very well researched, on english sources at least. But I still wouldn't take them as a proper authority on the matter. They're speaking from what they've read from very biased sources. That's practically hearsay. They're not first hand experiences. Not even second-hand, because it's what an outsider to that culture saw, and very likely misinterpreted, because of their own cultural differences as an outsider, and then may even have altered some more because of their goal as a missionary. An here you come, modern reader, to try to interpret these older texts with your modern eyes, maybe even from a completely different culture to the first two involved aswell, making it a double or triple conundrum of time, culture and sociohistorical context, yet again. That is, without taking into account your own individual biases towards the text you're reading and what you expect to find, or do, for your own personal goals. Multiply all that for the amount of people standing between you, and that original first-hand account. You see the problem?
The least the author can do in such cases (because sometimes, that third-hand account really is all we have access to in the present) is 1) acknowledge how the sources they're using are biased, and 2) beware the reader on how those biases may have affected the material you're reading, to somehow be able to infer what the original would've looked like without that effect. You may want to take it a step further and consider your own sociocultural position, and how it could affect your personal interpretation upon reading it. If the author(s) don't even mention biases...? and even try to pass it all off as "certainty"...? 🚩🚩🚩
Take everything from that author with a mountain of salt. Consider it entertainment, maybe inspiration, anything except treating it as "professional" or "expert work"... as I see some people doing.
And always prioritize first-hand sources. Always. Prioritize. First. Hand. Sources. Talk to a native from that area, learn the language of the culture or tradition you're interested in, really immerse yourself in it, and you'll have an easier time spotting bullshit.

My new strategy instead of ignoring people who I know are being racist/bigoted towards me isn’t to ignore them like I have been but to straight up talk their ear off especially in front of thier friends and annoy them because truly when you’re quiet people assume thier own biases are true and they spread it around. I’m gonna be a proud yapper and see how that turns peoples opinions.

I've spent the last several years unlearning the internalized classism that I developed from being online and believing the myth that southern/redneck=stupid and/or bad.
After living somewhere extremely politically left and extremely "North", you find a LOT more unapologetic racism/homophbia in some of those places than you ACTUALLY do in the "bad" (read: poor) "hick" areas.
You are not immune to propaganda. Even from the "good" guys.
yall have got to be more normal about Southern people and I'm not kidding. enough of the Sweet Home Alabama incest jokes, enough of the idea that all Southerners are bigots and rednecks, and enough of the idea that the South has bad food. shut up about "trailer trash" and our accents and our hobbies!
do yall know how fucking nauseating it is to hear people only bring up my state to make jokes about people in poverty and incestuous relationships? how much shame I feel that I wasn't born up north like the Good Queers and Good Leftists with all the Civilised Folk with actual houses instead of small cramped trailers that have paper thin walls that I know won't protect me in a bad enough storm?
do yall know how frustrating it is to be trans in a place that wants to kill you and whenever you bring it up to people they say "well just move out" instead of sympathizing with you or offering help?
do yall understand how alienating it is to see huge masterposts of queer and mental health resources but none of them are in your state because theyre all up north? and nobody seems to want to fix this glaring issue because "they're all hicks anyways"
Southern people deserve better. we deserve to be taken seriously and given a voice in the queer community and the mental health space and leftist talks in general.

thinking of the previous post, how bonded the north is as a realm is because they still uphold their own traditions, their gods, they are too big to get southern help in time for winter, and if you count beyond the wall, the north is too big to be controlled by anyone else but their own folk. their alliance with the crown was with the dragons who; barely bothered going north to see the realm, and robert who trusted ned to rule the north as he saw fit. it was basically a kingdom on it's own right but title.
compared to dorne, who has more of an alliance than bended a knee, they are still a princedom (no other realm has that, no ruling prince or house), and the alliance is because the dornish men kept fighting themselves and fighting their borders. if the stormlands or the reach tried to breech borders, the crown would aid north. it's a mutually supportive alliance with benefits. the north had no benefits from the crown other than being called brutes and such.
i need to put it on my pinpost and carrd but both jon and robb in their respective kingships are referred as kings in the north for short but their territories involve the north, the iron islands and part of the riverlands, with the trident involved. and for jon, it involves beyond the wall as well, as he was the one who made the wieldings join the north as one realm.

I’ve recently been thinking about one of the times I was in russia—in Saint Petersburg—in April of 2007.
People think this evil from Putin is a new thing. It’s not.
2007 was before russia invaded Georgia, and before they invaded Ukraine.
It was about a month before “Victory Day”, and already the entire city was covered in the black and orange ribbons, and Nevsky Prospect—the most famous street in russia—had multi-storey banners of propaganda and Putin’s face all over the buildings.
Because of my (Northern Irish) surname, the woman my brother and I were meeting up with assumed I wasn’t Ukrainian. And so when I said I was, she BURST OUT LAUGHING. She said “Sorry, but I always laugh when I meet Ukrainians. They sound so stupid when they speak.”
She was then horrified that my Ukrainian family didn’t like the Soviet Union.
russians say one thing to Westerners and something else entirely to the people they invade and colonise over and over again. They hide their racism when they speak to people in the West.
That same trip to russia, the building we were staying in ON NEVSKY PROSPECT was raided by two truckloads of men with machine guns. Tour buses were driving past, and armed men were raiding our apartment!
A few days later we were in Tallinn in Estonia. Bronze Night had just happened, when russian thugs trashed the city because the Estonians moved a Soviet statue. Every single window in the city centre was held up with wooden boards.
This was nearly twenty years ago.
I look at all these idiotic tankies in the West (and on Tumblr). And I’m shocked by their wilful ignorance when it comes to russia.

fwiw: a lot of people follow @roach-works who just reblogged yo ur comments on history, books, and authoritarian regimes' inability to indoctrinate entire populations.
I'm an ex classics major with a lot of history under my belt, who knows Rome sutmr under a corrupt oligarchy even when it coughed up a hairball like Nero or Commodus. (Of course, it helped that Rome worked on the pragmatic principle, "How can we keep society and infrastructure functioning, given that positions of power tend to be occupied by the rich & corrupt?" I like to joke that Western Rome never fell; it just became the mafia.)
At any rate, my tendency to see the US through the lens of Rome makes me a pessimist: I assume we'll manage even in a dystopia.
I'm working on expanding my knowledge of world history to counteract that, but it's great to check in with a sane historian who will help me resist crowdsourced panicmongering.
Look, as I have said, I 0% blame anyone for being scared. I'm scared. With no exaggeration or hyperbole, Shit Real Bad, and it's undoubtedly going to get worse, at least in some ways, before we have a chance to make it better. It was completely avoidable, but half of America decided they didn't want to avoid it, so here we are.
Nonetheless, as my last reblog also pointed out, there are still basic historical and critical-thinking skills that we can use here, and to acknowledge that even if it is obviously unprecedented to us, it is not unprecedented to others, and we can study those lessons and think about how to apply them to our own situation. Rome is the obvious model for a world empire brought down by corruption, oligarchy, imperialism, endless foreign wars, income inequality, economic upheaval, excessive militarism, etc etc, but it's not the only one, and the "fall of Rome and start of the Dark Ages" is one of those narratives that gets my premodern-historian rant especially exercised. By the time Rome "fell" in 476, the city of Rome wasn't even the capital of the Empire; the western capital was in Ravenna, northern Italy, and the eastern capital was in Constantinople, where it endured for another thousand years. Roman successor kingdoms were founded in Visigothic Spain, Merovingian Francia, etc., and often imported Roman law, religion, bureaucracy/administration, and nobility relatively unchanged, which is why Latin was the legal, ecclesiastical, and educational language of western Europe until as late as 1962 and Vatican II. The "Dark Ages" are likewise at best an extreme simplification and at worst exceedingly misleading imperial-nostalgia propaganda. Etc etc. I will restrain myself.
Rome dominated the (European/Near Eastern/north African) world in the way that the 19th-century British Empire dominated the actual world and American empire dominates now, at least for the moment, and thus we have to recognize that similar dynamics are at play here in a late-stage imperial decline. However, Rome did not just up and vanish in a puff of smoke one day and never appear again, and we also have to recognize that the end of empires is generally a good thing, historically speaking. Yes, absolutely a turbulent, dangerous, and traumatizing time, especially for those living within the imperial core, but still. There's also the blunt fact that America itself has been responsible for a lot (a LOT) of violent regime change, coups, overthrows, bombings, and other disastrous foreign policy interventions for almost the entirety of its existence, and we can't pretend that we are just the shining beacon of unproblematic truth, freedom, and faith that most conservatives, and a lot of saccharine American-exceptionalism liberals, tend to think. If that comes back to bite us and we have to experience the kind of political and social upheaval that we have arrantly and unrepentantly inflicted on other places in the name of our Superior Right... well.
As for the post about history books (here), that was another attempt to push back against the kind of broad-strokes fearmongering that is often prevalent right now. Again: for completely understandable reasons, but still. There is literally no way on earth that the practice of academic history, or the procession of human events, is going to be destroyed because an orange dumbass and his idiot followers took power in America for eight nonconsecutive years. Even if by some miracle he managed to do it in America and the only thing ever officially published was Heritage Foundation balderdash, a) historians in countries other than America would still be writing books about it, and b) again, literally impossible. To return to the history of Soviet totalitarianism that I was addressing in that post, I suggest that people look into the samizdat, the contraband news and literature widely shared in the USSR. They faced far more stringent conditions than we ever will: the KGB controlled access to all word processors and copiers, precisely because they could be used to spread non-regime-approved information, and dissidents had to write and circulate it by hand. If they were caught, they could be disappeared, sent to the gulag, confined in a psychiatric hospital, subject to intensive "state education," etc. But they still managed to pass it around and read it, and it would be literally impossible for this collection of Trumpster chucklefucks to exert even a fraction of this logistical and physical control, when every citizen already owns a laptop and a smartphone. The history books aren't going anywhere.
That all said, of course we are all hyper-alert and anxious and afraid, and we don't want to miss anything that might be important or dangerous or anything else. I get that, I completely do. But we still have to pace ourselves, we still have to apply critical thought and learn how to educate ourselves when something seems huge and scary and unstoppable, and I am attempting to do a small part of that on a niche blue hellsite that won the social media competition by literally doing nothing while its peers all fell face first into being corporate Nazis. The bar is low. But hey, I'm here, and you're here and you're reading it, and we will get through it. I promise.
Courage, etc.

palestinians allied with and continue to support nazis. the arab world also still teaches their propaganda and the propaganda that inspired them.
hamas mentions THE PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION in their charter:
Tumblr media
this fake text heavily influenced the nazis:
saudi arabia JUST removed these lies from their texbooks.
from JTA on oct 1938:
let’s explore some quotes:
An Arabic translation of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf is being distributed by Al-Shurouq, a Ramallah based book distributor, to East Jerusalem and territories controlled by the Palestinian Authority (PA). According to Agence France Presse (Sept. 8), the book, previously banned by Israel, has been allowed by the PA and is 6th on the Palestinian best-seller list. Bisan publishers in Lebanon first published this edition in 1963 and again in 1995. The book costs about $10. The cover shows a picture of Hitler, a swastika, and the title in both German and Arabic. The translator, Luis Al-Haj, wrote the following introduction:
"Hitler the soldier left behind not only a legend stained by tragedy itself; the tragedy of a state whose dreams were shattered, a regime whose pillars were torn down, and a political party that was crushed. Hitler was a man of ideology who bequeathed an ideological heritage whose decay is inconceivable. This ideological heritage includes politics, society, science, culture, and war as science and culture."
"The National Socialism that Hitler preached for and whose characteristics were presented in his book My Struggle, and whose principles he explained in his speeches before he took power, as well as during the 13 years he spent at the head of the German nation - this National Socialism did not die with the death of its herald. Rather, its seeds multiplied under each star."
"We cannot really understand the efforts of this man without examining the principles enclosed in his book My Struggle that the Nazis turned into the "Gospel of National Socialism."
"This translation of the book My Struggle has never been presented to Arab speakers. It is taken from the original text of the author, Adolf Hitler. The text was untouched by the censor. We made a point to deliver Hitler's opinions and theories on nationalism, regimes, and ethnicity without any changes because they are not yet outmoded and because we, in the Arab world, still proceed haphazardly in all three fields."
hmmm
lmfao moron.

Shit Stirrer: A great cause with a dash of irony
Jumping into my first blog post with Nicola!
Looking fresh, well rested, gorgeous and Christmas ready from - I'm assuming - her family's Galway living room, Nicola posted a photo of herself today wearing 1 of 8 specially designed "Saltburn Insults" t-shirts. These limited edition t-shirts were created by Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell (director) to both celebrate one year since the release of the movie Saltburn on Netflix and, more importantly, to help raise funds for War Child UK's "Emergency Christmas Appeal" fundraising efforts. War Child UK's single goal is to ensure a safe future for every child affected by war. This is a cause we know Nicola stands firmly behind! If you're interested in supporting this important cause, follow this link for the t-shirt Nicola is wearing... or scroll to the bottom of the Everpress page to see the other 7 "Saltburn Insults" t-shirts on offer: https://everpress.com/warchild-x-shitstirrer#more-info
Tumblr media
So what, you ask, did I mean about that dash of irony?
Look at the angelic look on her face. Nicola, a shit stirrer? Shady Whistledown herself?! Maybe, perhaps sometimes 😉
Over the last week the Lukola fans in my chat groups as well as those sharing thoughts in my live streams, or those sending me DMs, have been expressing the same thing: exhaustion! They (heck... me too. We!) are tired and feeling a whole lot of frustration. Some quotes:
"I feel like we're all here trying to defend Nicola and Luke, trying to fight off all the negative propaganda being put out by the Jakolas and trolls, and all the while Nicola is the one feeding much of the {front facing} narrative. I'm tired and discouraged." "I believe they're together - 100% I do - but I'm tired of not knowing for sure and it's annoying to spend so much time worrying about a couple that may only come clean years from now, or if they get papped." "I'm sick to death of breadcrumbs. I want the whole loaf now!"
Yet we also laughed at the ironic humour in Nicola as a "Shit Stirrer"; the primary distributor (and organizer of other distributors, with Shonda's & JVN's help sometimes) of breadcrumbs, morsels and golden nuggets! The breadcrumbs are so much fun to find, and they can also be confusing and frustrating! Shit stirrer indeed. Xx
Nicola also has ruffled some feathers because of her political and social beliefs (support of the LGBTQ community [Gay Icon!] and abortion rights in Northern Ireland), humanitarian work. From my perspective, GOOD work! To others who perhaps have a vested interest in the status quo? Shit stirrer indeed. Xx
Yes, we Lukola fans know that Nicola and Luke don't owe us anything and that privacy is their right. We also know that Tomdaya took years before they acknowledged their relationship publicly. We should be prepared for the long haul, yes? Yes. 🥴 Le sigh.
As we enter into a new year I know the question for me will be how much of my time, energy and heart will I place into all things Lukola? Over the next week or so I'll think about the wonderful connections I've made in our Lukola community (and the angst I've experienced because of divisions)... I'll think about how fun breadcrumb speculation is, how I relish the hunt for golden nuggets (those solid truths that are ballast for our ship)... and of course the enthusiasm (and agony) that I feel for the ongoing watch for launch.
Today I'm feeling tired and at times, discouraged. My plan is to relax, reassess and come to 2025 with a fresh mindset. No obsession... just patience and fun will be the aim... and keeping up with this blog too.
Will you be on the ship with me in 2025? Or will Nicola and Luke launch before the New Year and save us all from the misery?! Ha!!
Cheers to Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Seasonal Celebrations... and to my fellow Commonwealth Countries, Yay for Boxer - I mean Boxing - Day (Dec 26th)!!
Tumblr media
P.S. Best doggos in the whole wide world! Convince me otherwise ;-)

BELLEVUE, Ky. (WKRC) - Residents in Northern Kentucky are on edge after discovering flyers promoting the Ku Klux Klan in several neighborhoods.
The flyers, which have been found over the past few days, have prompted local police to reach out to federal authorities.
Bonnie, who was visiting her sister in Bellevue, said she found one of the flyers next to her car.
"I found it this morning when I came over, and it was literally lying next to my car," Bonnie said.
She noted that there was also one in a neighbor's yard. The flyer read, "Leave now avoid deportation," and included information for KKK groups in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
"It’s very scary to see something like that," Bonnie said.
The flyers have also been reported in Ludlow, Fort Wright, and Fort Mitchell.
"Completely flabbergasted when I saw that. 15 years doing this, and I’ve never seen anything like this," said Bellevue Police Chief Jon McClain.
McClain first heard about the flyers on Monday and has since contacted the FBI.
"I sent an email to the agent in charge of the Covington office to let them know this propaganda is making its rounds," McClain said.

ever wished rain world characters had canon birthdays ? we can't really give them canon birthdays but we CAN do the next best thing together : fandom-decided fanon birthdays !!
Tumblr media
this account is dedicated to doing daily polls to decide on birthdays for each major rain world character ( all playable slugcats and nightcat / the watcher + all major-ish iterators ) , as well as requests for background characters ( e.g. artificer's pups / a broadcast iterator / the scavenger chieftain / etc. )
more info will be supplied below the cut !
polls info :
i've decided to go with seasons (northern hemisphere) -> specific month -> date range -> specific date instead of putting all the months in one poll because i thought 12 options would be a little too much ! an example birthday poll set would go something like winter -> december -> december 15th to 20th -> december 16th .
each poll will be 1 day long , but votes will be counted five minutes before the poll ends for my own convenience . you're allowed to reblog with propaganda for any of the options , and i'll be reblogging it back here !
tags info :
#[ bday poll ] — any birthday poll posts / requests #[ not a poll ] — any non-poll admin posts / asks #[ propaganda ] — any reblogged propaganda #[ bday archive ] — all decided birthdays #[ celebrations ] — basically just me reblogging the birthday archive posts every time a birthday happens
all poll-related posts will also be tagged with their featured character's tags , for easier searching :]

Sword gays showdown, round 4 of bracket two
Propaganda:
For Hikaru Sulu:
1) Okay, first off: Which version am I submitting? Prime timeline (TOS) or Kelvin timeline (AOS, also known as the reboot movies if you're not in the fandom)? The answer is both. Prime Sulu has the more iconic fencing scenes (and is also said to have other sword related abilities) while Kelvin Sulu is canonically gay. Specifically as a tribute to George Takei btw who played prime Sulu in TOS and is famously gay and an LGBT+ rights activist among other causes. The picture provided is prime Sulu but if you've only watched AOS, feel free to vote for him anyway.
I'm not gonna link any videos here since that would probably exceed the scope of the propaganda section but clips should be pretty easy to find. And if you can't, just trust me: The TOS fencing scenes are amazing. The AOS one is probably fine too but it's been ages since I've watched it and I forgot it even existed so it can't have been THAT memorable.
Fun fact: George Takei initially didn't know how to fence and didn't find out he'd have to until pretty late and started taking fencing lessons only three weeks before the filming of that episode (The Naked Time) and apparently "became so out-of-control and boisterous that he had to be separated from the rest of the production personnel, for their own safety" which, in context of what the episode is about, is just absolutely amazing. Truly iconic.
Anyway, considering Star Trek is an important part of queer history (I'm only half joking) you need to vote for Sulu, we all know George Takei is an icon, make the right choice here.
2) When they got hit with the drunk virus he took his shirt off and started challenging people to duels. Iconic
3) This bitch got the outer space disease that makes you silly, and revealed they were gung ho for fencing, and brought out their sabre to just. Swashbuckle. Goes "/oh my/," and is clearly gay and played by a gay actor
For Olivier:
She is only female general in her nation, and guards the northern border. She fights with a sword even though there are other people with guns. Olivier is unmarried despite being older (not sure how old exactly, but she is a general, and that takes time). To the best of my knowledge she shows no interest in anyone, thus making it possible to interpret her as aromantic and asexual, or as a lesbian. The bit where Mustang offers to take her on a date and she threatens to eat so much she will bankrupt him is funny.

I’ve had it with ignorant anime blogs who learned the world Palestine about 5 days ago
….(through social media of course) Telling me, a Jewish Israeli women, who has been living through this conflict her entire life - that I’m wrong.
They never have credible examples yet they’re constantly asking me for proof for my people’s biggest massacre since the holocaust.
When something doesn’t fit your narrative it propaganda:
When I provide actual evidence and proof- Its propaganda.
-the sad truth is that anti Zionists believe literal Hamas propaganda
Then they move on to patronising me and making gross generalisation of an entire 10 million people country. It always something along the lines of
“Oh no sweetie you’re so brainwashed you don’t understand “. Bruh I live 2 hours away from Gaza, this is my own country, there’s been a terror attack just yesterday.
And finally- they ask for proof. I’ve come to hate that word.
Anti Zionists are a quick to believe a literal terror organisation then listen to Jews and educate themselves.
-A quick google search will prove you wrong.
-I’ve made dozens of posts about the conflict and Jewish history. All of them include *credible* sources and statistics, images , graphs, links to articles and examples.
-Al Jazeera isn’t a credible news and information source*: it’s racist, antisemitic and heavily biased. It’s filled with Hamas propaganda- they literally call terrorists “martyrs”.
*(Ive made a more detailed post about that as well )
-once again, Hamas literally live streamed their crimes.
Your ignorance and antisemitic rhetoric is showing. You lack basic understanding of history and key terms.
-you clearly don’t know what the word Zionism even means.
The fact that I found a tag saying “Zionism is terrorism”🤡🤦‍♀️

As always here are some articles & posts to educate yourself:
