Nightmare

I've set myself the unofficial goal of hitting all my AUs this month. So have some Spare Parts Boys. All you need to know, though, is that this AU is totally canon compliant until TRF save for two things: One, Sherlock and John were together before the Fall, and two, they live on Titan in the 24th century.

It takes a while for Sherlock to accept how much he still has to learn when it comes to anything to do with interpersonal relationships.

Case in point, just because the person you love most in the world has forgiven you for the horrible thing you did to him, doesn't mean it's not still haunting both of you.

John has nightmares. John always had nightmares, even back before Sherlock jumped. John has enough trauma Sherlock isn't responsible for to keep him in nightmares for the rest of his life. 

Like his father's death. Or the incident on Mars that is responsible for his synthetic arm.

John had PTSD and was nearly suicidal when Sherlock met him, on his way down the bottle or his sidearm. Sherlock shocked him out of that state by providing adrenaline on a daily basis. In the beginning, the adrenaline was chasing criminals through the streets of New London and the frozen plains of Titan. Later, that adrenaline included sex. But John still had nightmares, and the bed they shared before Sherlock jumped was often besieged with these night terrors. John would wake up screaming. Sometimes he’d claw at his artificial arm as if he wasn’t sure what this thing was doing on his body. Sometimes he’d whimper and beg for it to stop, whatever was torturing him.

Sherlock hated these nightmares. Still does.

But it’s a special kind of hell when you’re the thing that haunts the person you’d literally die for. When you become the nightmare. 

It’s been a rough few days. John’s clinic was busy, and they had a truly gruelling case, human trafficking, sympathetic victims, and an unsatisfying outcome. They got the local thugs and they freed the victims, but the big fish escaped their net. 

They went home and both of them fell asleep as soon as their heads hit their respective pillows.

Sherlock woke suddenly to John screaming his name, over and over, panting with fear. Sherlock did what he always does, he gathered John in his arms and whispered, “I’m here, it’s all right, it was just a dream. I’m here. I’m here,” kissing John’s brow and breathing with him as he slowly calmed down and fell asleep again, still clinging to Sherlock like he was going to vanish if he let go. 

It’s getting a bit old, to tell the truth. It doesn’t happen that often anymore, but it happens frequently enough to bother Sherlock. He’s also more than a bit disgusted at himself for having the nerve to be annoyed at John’s subconscious. It’s been two years, a small, insidious voice inside his mind whispers. When is this going to stop?

Probably never. That’s the short answer. The long answer that it’s probably going to be less and less frequent, as the scar tissue over this particular wound in John’s subconscious grows thicker.

Sherlock still feels like shit every time it happens. Because it shows him, time and again, that no matter how much they’ve grown and changed and forgiven and promised, no matter how good he’s been, there’s a part of John that still lives in that moment. There’s a corner of John’s mind that’s stuck with the worst thing Sherlock has ever done. 

When he’s sure John is fast asleep again, he gets up and sits in the window seat, watching the clouds race over the murky sky, revealing glimpses of Saturn. Occasionally, a shuttle passes through his line of sight, or a hovercab. The city is quiet at this time of night. Never asleep, but dozing. 

John’s hands are warm on his shoulders, caressing tense muscles with soothing strokes. “Come back to bed,” John whispers in his ear, soft breath tickling against his neck.

“In a minute,” Sherlock replies, making room for John to slip into the seat behind him, letting John rearrange them so he’s resting against John as John’s arms come around him.

“What is it?” John murmurs into his hair, his voice soft and quiet and gentle.

Sherlock knows he could say nothing. He could just take John to bed and distract them both from the dark of the night with the heat of their bodies. Instead, he takes John’s hand between both of his and traces idle patterns over his palm. “It’s always going to be there. Isn’t it?”

He can feel more than hear John sigh, his chest heaving with the deep breath he takes and then lets out, slowly. “Probably.” John meets his eyes in the window’s reflection. “Doesn’t mean I don’t forgive you. Doesn’t mean I want to be anywhere but here.”

“I know.” 

And the thing is, he does know. And it still hurts. Both of them. 

“You know, I have patients who ask me why their synthetic limbs feel pain.”

Sherlock sighs, because he has a feeling he knows where John is going with this. “Are you going to give me another lecture on how ignoring pain is stupid?”

Sherlock can hear the smile in John’s voice when he replies, “I’m that predictable?”

Sherlock brushes a kiss over John’s knuckles. “Never.” Another kiss. “Well. Sometimes.”

John chuckles, kissing Sherlock’s hair. “Well then, Mister I-Know-What-You’re-About-To-Say-Before-You-Do, tell me what I was about to say.”

“That pain is good, because it shows you your limits. That pain reminds you of past mistakes. That it’s a teacher, and a guide.”

“A bit more poetic than I would have phrased it, but shockingly accurate as usual,” John answers, and Sherlock can feel him smile against Sherlock’s hairline.

“I know all of this. What bothers me is that you’re in pain because of my mistakes.”

“I know. And that’s the reason why I forgive you,” John says gently, moving their joined hands over Sherlock’s heart. 

Sherlock says nothing, pressing John’s hand closer against his heart. He can’t express what John’s forgiveness means to him, what this second life they have together has given him. And he knows that the pain he feels every time he watches John live through his death is both his penance and the price he has to pay. He just wishes he was the only one who had to go through it.

“Want to go back to bed now?” John asks, pulling Sherlock even closer.

Sherlock smiles. “In a minute.”

In a minute, they will go back to bed. They will chase away melancholy thoughts and lingering aches with hands and mouths and words of adoration breathed into sweat-slick skin. They will fall asleep entangled and wake together to greet a new day together.

For now, though, Sherlock kisses John’s palm and together, they watch their city doze the night away.

Sanjay Patel

He may or may not have snuck Craig into his cabin, and Craig may or may not have started charging people for “sage advice from the talking snake”

Sanjay’s a relatively good kid but kind of a hellion. Manny spends much of his early life in a moral dilemma. Having them be partners seemed like a logical decision

His bowling pin head was really hard to adapt to my usual style without utterly mangling his face, but I think I did alright

Manny Rivera

He’s wearing the boots and scarf from his El Tigre costume

Bessie thinks he’s the coolest thing, but his and Danny’s egos clash almost immediately

This presumably takes place after he’s settled on heroism, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a troublemaker

April O’Neil

She’s quite possibly the only person getting any actual work done in camp

She’s ostensibly the least insane person in the group, but she’s prone to egging on the others’ antics and starting bets on how much things will escalate

Her age has been dropped a couple of years, so she’s often with Lincoln foiling Dora’s whole escape artist routine

Tommy Pickles

Still on his filmmaker career from All Grown Up! He has a lot of footage of a lot of things in a lot of places

Normally mild mannered and agreeable, but being given “strict orders” instantly makes his good mood vanish

His mind tends to wander when he’s bored, and it has no regard for its curfew

Lincoln Loud

He’s a weeb canonically, so he’s been given a vaguely animesque appearance

Whatever camp this takes place at, I can guarantee at least one of his sisters had been there prior. Since most of the characters here are the Everyman type, Linc’s cunning and trickster attributes are played up a bit

Has no regard for the fourth wall. Tommy has no clue what he’s on about and thinks he’s insane

Aang (Just Aang)

Whether or not he can bend is based purely on what’s funniest at the moment, especially since he and Dib make it impossible for this to be canon compliant

He’s definitely living in an AU with a less horrific backstory. Less responsibilities, less issues

Wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he’d definitely give a wasp a warning shot if it was being a jerk

Danny Fenton

Danny, and only Danny, is actually a little older here. He and Jenny are the counselors. Lucky them.

Doesn’t even bother with the secret identity since Bob’s the only one dense enough to not connect the dots

Being able to turn invisible is really helpful when Dib has questions he doesn’t feel like answering

Jimmy Neutron

There he is, officer. That one’s the ringleader

Aang’s existence is a constant source of frustration for him since he can’t come up with a scientific explanation for all…that

He’s right off the heels of Nicktoons Unite and is wondering when and why SB became so serious

SpongeBob SquarePants

The only adult we see at the camp for some reason, and the only nonhuman besides Jenny

I messed up his scaling, he was supposed to be small enough to fit in someone’s hand, hence his overly simplified design. That’s the height he is in-universe

Ironically and disproportionately strong. Not Jenny’s level, but about as strong as he is in Unite…without being adjusted for size. In other words, he can easily pick up and throw the campers like rag dolls

Jenny Wakeman

The only nonhuman kid at camp, as well as the oldest/youngest at 16/5

She’s the one thing stopping land bears from tearing the camp apart

She’s justifiably a little wary since she’s not exactly nature proof, but all the kids think she’s the coolest thing

Timmy Turner

A closer look at him reveals three familiar looking trinkets shaped like a wand, wings, and a floaty crowny thing

He doesn’t need magic, anyway. He’ll make everything possibly go wrong his own way

He and Bessie butt heads almost immediately; Timmy’s fine with one hypercompetent overachieving Girl Scout in his life, but he does not need another

Ginger Foutley

Usually found with fellow artsy types Rudy and Lincoln

Riddled with anxieties and restless leg syndrome. She comes of as brooding, but she’s just introspective

Since April’s a menace, she’s the actual least insane camper

Eliza Thornberry

It took her a bit to realize SpongeBob could actually talk to begin with and that everyone else didn’t have the same power as her. In fact, there’s a non-zero chance there are a bunch of animals from assorted Nick shows that are screaming in the background constantly and it’s messing with her head

I gave her just the one braid to make her distinct from the other Elizabeth in the cast

She slips in and out of her father’s mannerisms. SMASHING!

Rudy Tabootie

Mysteriously disappears to parts unknown it’stheChalkZone every now and then when he needs to blow off some steam

I find it funny how stylized I made everyone else while Rudy’s just slightly taller

SpongeBob sees a lot of himself in the kid. Rudy doesn’t know how to feel about that

Dora Marquez

Y’know, I added her as a joke, and she immediately became my favorite

She’s the youngest kid at her canon age of seven, so she’s coddled by everyone else. She HATES it, given that she’s been adventuring on her own for the longest time, so she’s a lot more cynical than usual. Easily the biggest departure from the norm

Constantly tries to escape supervision in favor of wandering the wilderness, but the talking cheese won’t let her

Arnold Shortman

He doesn’t know how he ended up as the “cool guy”, but he’s not gonna fight it

Appears detached and aloof, but he’s more likely just dissociating

Always seems to know what he’s doing to the point of parody. As smart as he is, I must reiterate he’s just improvising

Dib Membrane

Eliza, Rudy, and especially Timmy aren’t too keen on hanging around him for very obvious reasons

The fact he’s with people who are reasonably sane this time around means he’s in much better spirits. Lincoln’s probably his best friend at the camp, although Dib’s still a loner

He and Jimmy always run the risk of killing each other if they talk for more than two minutes at a time due to differing views on magic

Bessie Higgenbottom

The kid most likely to actually listen to the inane drivel that comes out of SpongeBob’s mouth

Since she’s still working on the whole Mighty Bee thing, she’s all over Manny, Danny, and Janny

There are very few campers that aren’t at least a little intimidated by her

There were a few other characters I wanted to add like Nate Wright (Big Nate), Annie Bramley (It’s Pony), Mikey Munroe (Bunsen is a Beast), but I scrapped them for space.

I elected to only use one character per series, causing me to drop Korra, Sheen Estevez, Ronnie Anne Santiago, and Hazel Wells for being spinoff characters (especially since Sheen and Ronnie Anne were around before getting their own shows). It also forced me to remove Fanboy and Chum Chum from my initial plan entirely.

I additionally wanted to keep SB as the only organic nonhuman character due to the inherent absurdity of having him as the sole adult figure, which is why Dib and April represent their series rather than Zim or a Ninja Turtle and why I chose not to use Harvey Beaks.

Team 10 Headcanons

- choji has to start using everyone else as his taste testers because ino n shikamaru are sick of his food

- like don’t get them wrong they love it normally but after choji cooks the same hidden cloud dish for the millionth time (he’s preparing a home cooked meal for karui), they’re tapped out

- one time there were rumors that shikamaru n ino were dating and ino almost tf passed out

- she was wondering where she went so wrong

- it was the most embarrassing week of her life and to this day, she can’t think about it without being annoyed

- they drunkenly got matching tattoos

- ino has instigated every single fight to happen in her 4 years at konoha academy

- and trust n believe she got those fight videos too

- ino taught choji and shikamaru all about flowers

- they didn’t gaf that much but they start to find it interesting how many different things can be conveyed with flowers

- especially when they started dating their respective girlfriend

- ino is dramatic and cannot go out with choji n shikamaru if they look messy (in her eyes)

- she’ll see a wrinkle in shikamaru’s shirt and she makes him take it off and shows him how to iron it

- ino damn near threw up when her dad made a joke about her marrying shikamaru or choji

- she called them her brothers n inoichi never bothered her again

- choji brought up his n karui’s 6 month anniversary and shikamaru n ino are like “??? who??”

- choji remembers that he actually forgot to tell them lolz!

- it wasn’t on purpose, after choji went on an extended trip to the hidden cloud n met karui, he just wanted to keep her to himself for a bit

- speaking of dating, shikamaru n choji tried the whole “if you hurt her we’ll kill you” spiel on sai but he was so unphased that they were embarrassed

- they realized their worry was unneeded after sai made a girl who was nasty to ino cry

- when shikamaru tells them that he’s officially dating temari, he watches choji begrudgingly slip ino a twenty dollar bill

- appalled they were betting on him but mainly that choji was betting against him

- they’re all very very comfy with one another

- i’m talking they had sleepovers up until the age of 17 and after they graduated, they moved in together

- no one can really guess what vibe these mfs be on, the only people who truly understand them is them

- their ideal days all consist of spending time with one another

- ino really doesnt play about these two

- they’re her blood (in her mind) and anyone who slights them have slighted her

- which is terrible for shikamaru n choji’s opps because you never want ino fucking yamanaka mad at you

I just started watching White Collar for the first time and a realization about most male written and directed media smacked me DIRECTLY in the face which is that SO MUCH media written by a for men is genuinely just male nerd self insert, non-canon compliant, AU fan fiction??????

Like them writing and creating stories is just “ok so these guys are soooo smooth and well dressed and women just flock to them at every turn and they can get away with anything and everyone believes and supports them when they do mess up and everyone thinks they’re sooooo brilliant”

This media isn’t just portraying women “for the male gaze” it’s EVERYTHING. Everything in these stories is supporting and uplifting mens’ delusions about who they are, how they’re perceived, and how they should expect to be treated. Which is incredibly ironic because anytime media portrays women or the world in the female gaze in a more “in my ideal world things would be like this” instead of portraying us as nothing but weak, broken, unloved, traumatized, victims OR one dimensional sex symbols with no needs or emotions they’re screaming, crying, throwing up about how stupid and unrealistic the story is….

This explains SO MUCH about how male characters are handled in shows like Veronica Mars and Buffy. Even though they’re shows staring women all the “good guys” get the delusional self insert, y/n, AU fan fic treatment (Buffy still wants Angel in season 3 and Riley in season 6 even after everything they did and Xander is CONSTANTLY forgiven for all the atrocious shit he says and does and is wanted by all women besides Buffy. Veronica forgiving Duncan and getting back together with him and even CONSIDERING Piz could truly only be born from men being delusional AS FUCK. Writing how they want men to be treated by women rather than being based in reality and the woman having even an ounce of self respect.)

Which is why the “bad boys”, Logan and Spike are such better characters. They’re so much more realistic, they get held accountable by the women in their lives, have better growth and are just way more appealing and attractive because they’re not the walking embodiment of what MEN want men to be treated and act like.

Oh god this feels like such cursed knowledge to have like it’s important to see this media for what it really is but now watching it feels that much yuckier like finding the porn of someone you DO NOT LIKE but like their emotional porn “this is what life would be like in my fantasies” and they’re the fantasies of the grossest men alive 😭😭😭😭😭

Also it shows their emotional maturity like all of these things are what 13 year old boys fantasize about not actual mature, grown men….

Also just realized this is why the Star Wars sequels were so hated. It wasn’t just Rey being powerful and loved by her found family and Kylo. It was that the movies showed the reality of men like Kylo. They destroyed the male fantasy Darth Vader created. They aren’t super cool, powerful badasses. They’re extremely sad, broken, temper tantrum throwing lost little boys who just want love and acceptance but have lost the ability to accept it because of the dark side (aka the patriarchy) which is the reality and that made me SOOOOO ANGRY lololololololol and this is why Joss Whedon THOUGHT making Spike into a sad pathetic mama’s boy of a poet would make the audience not like him because that DOES work on misogynistic men who enjoy the male gaze but does NOT work and only humanizes and makes Spike even more complex and lovable to the female gaze 💀💀💀💀 oh good lord

Favorite atla fic?

Oh. There was no way this wasn't going to become a list. Most of it is going to be maiko because I'm starved for content.

Basically any maiko fic written by annavale23. They have a way of writing the exact things that tickle my brain. My top picks are graphite and tea and fascinations. Both modern AU.

love is patient, love is kind by littlerosette: kataang fleabag AU. Read if you can handle the aansgt. I love Katara's characterisation in this one. And the writting is beautiful.

Saving Face by meltingglacier: Koh kidnaps Mai. It's very creepy and disturbing. I always imagined Koh and Mai encounter would be her bullying him. This is far from it, but it is absolutely amazing.

Dish Duty by Princeliest: Katara and Zuko try to make truce with varying degrees of success (or failure). Zuko gets into trouble (as is customary) and is surprised when Katara and Aang show up to save him. Has some whump.

Both Zuko vs Adults and The Little Lady serie by WinterSnufkin. Zuko vs Adults is exactly what is written on the tin. It has an Azula and Zuko story that's lovely. It has a maiko story too! The Little Lady is Zuko cross-dressing and all the feelings associated with it.

Nip it in the Bud by ranilla_bean: NSFW. Explicit. Zukka. This one is hilarious! Sokka is horny and dying.

reverberations by aerixlee: a modern AU maiko story I held off reading because it's modern AU. You would think I should've learned better by now. Anyways, this is actually amazing! (I've been trying to draw fanart for this one).

Since a lot of people have found me through IWATEX, I figured I should probably make an actual list of my AUs and fanfiction, just to have them all in one place.

Fragmented Futures - aka. the Everyone Knows AU

Probably the one most of you are here for, since it's the one I've posted about the most, but written the least for in terms of actual fic. An AU in which all of the Stratos-Helios kids suddenly become aware, that they're stuck in a timeloop... all except Sol. Or so the others think.

A story full of kids being friends, learning new stuff about themselves, and a generous dash of eldritch shenanigans.

Currently in the works for this AU: an as of yet "non-canon" vent-fic, in which I subject Sol to something a little more realistic than my usual treatment of them. Not sure if it'll be incorporated into the fic proper, but as of this point in writing, it's just meant to be a little side-thing set in the same universe.

The Tragedy of the Exocolony on Vertumna IV

The AU/fanfiction that has me in a chokehold at the moment, TOTEOV is an eldritch horror story that takes all my love for Sym and the Overseer, flips it upside-down, and turns it into a toxic mess of good intentions gone horrifically wrong. Oh, and Rex and Vace are forced to work together.

A story that draws heavily on the tropes of children stolen away by the supernatural, such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin and other fae tales.

Heed the tags. Seriously.

The Solution AU

An AU I've never really mentioned here except once, nor written a single word for. Ironically, this is actually the origin AU of TOTEOV.

The basic premise is that Sol, after many trips around the loop, decides to look for a permanent solution. They eventually decide that the best way to do so, is for them to become a Gardener from the very beginning and create an entirely new timeline from scratch. In collaboration with the Overseer, they turn the clock back to just before the Verma's departure and get implanted in the system as a seed to sprout in the future.

The issue is that this means Solanaceae won't ever have existed amongst the humans. And they're fine with paying this price, if it means a more harmonious future overall.

So aboard the Stratospheric, when that time comes, there is no child born to Flulu and Geranium, no cheerful Sol amongst the kids. Instead, when Besk dies, the twins are adopted by the cultivators and grow up... not quite the same as in the original timeline, but also not too different from how we know them.

And on Vertumna, Sol welcomes humanity to guide their gradual integration into the ecosystem. Looking from afar, forgotten by everyone they love except the Gardeners.

......except this is one of my AUs, so of course nothing is as it seems, and Sol will re-learn just how strong the power of love is.

The Person You'll Grow to Be - completed, canon-compliant fanfic.

My first fanfic for this fandom. Aka the Flulu Loves Her Kid So Much fic.

A story going from Flulu learning of her pregnancy all the way to her death during the famine. An tale of her love for Sol and how she felt about a lot of things.

Hi! I had a fic question and I don't know where to ask it? Feel free to ignore this if you'd like. But I was wondering if my fic would count as an AU if I had a konoha resident character living in a house, and the weather was snowing? I'm still new to naruto and I'm not perfectly acquainted with the different villages. It doesn't snow in konoha right so would that mean my canon character would need to be in the land of snow? I don't really have a reason to put them there. Would anyone read my fic if I wrote it snowed in konoha or nearby? Or should I label my fic as an AU? 

Okay, I'm going to explain a little bit what AU/canon divergence/canon compliant fics are. So depending on that you can probably identify where your fic would fit better.

Alternate Universe (AU): The only things AUs are compelled to take from the source material are the names of the characters, and the rest you can decide on your own. You can keep the basic traits of the characters as it is or change them a little bit, because a character in canon went through the things to become what we know of them. In your AU it's not necessary. So, it would work either way.

Canon Divergence: You take the characters, their canon dynamic, and equations, the world as they are, without deviating from it, but change one major plot point and that consecutively changes their future from how things happened in canon.

For example, if Sasuke learns Itachi's truth before their battle - it would change everything that goes on in canon after Itachi's death. It Naruto isn't taken care of by Iruka, it would change everything with Naruto not being able to handle the hate he received from the village. If, upon Orochimaru's suggestion, the Ame orphans are killed, it would affect the entire future story of Naruto. Fics like this are canon divergent.

Canon Compliant: These fics don't contradict canon too much. There will be minor changes here and there, but unlike an AU or a canon divergent fic these fics take place within the restrains of the source material.

If you're writing a fic with modern setting, are the characters in your story also something other than ninja? Do Shinobi exist? If not, you can tag it as Modern AU. If yes, it could easily fall into canon divergent or canon compliant, depending on whatever you want to convey.

Personally, I take inspiration from not only manga, but also filler episode and novels. Manga doesn't say anything about snowing, but in the Itachi Shinden arc there's a scene with pregnant Mikoto where it starts snowing. I've used that to show it sometimes snows in Konoha.

Some briefing on the village and nation in Naruto.

There are Five Great Nations in Naruto - Land of Fire, Land of Water, Land of Lightning, Land of Wind, and Land of Earth. These lands were the defined by the chakra nature of the Shinobi... As explained by Kakashi

Naruto is set in the Feudal era of Japan in terms of its politics where these countries have a leader they call Daimyō. And all these countries have a powerful village.

Land of Fire has Konohagakure. Land of Water has Kirigakure. Land of Wind has Sunagakure. Land of Lightning has Kumogakure. Land of Earth has Iwagakure.

They have their respective leaders - Hokage, Mizukage, Kazekage, Tsuchikage, Raikage.

There is Land of Iron, but it's not run by the Shinobi forces but Samurai, and it's meant to be neutral. So no other nation can attack it. According to most maps, it lies to the north of Land of Fire.

There are some other villages/lands mentioned like Amegakure, which is situated in an unnamed nation. Land of Waves has no strong military, which is why they needed Konoha's help. There are mentions of the villages scattered here and there but they're insignificant. The major confict in the world happened because of the Five nations.

That's it about the villages (that I know of).

As to the readers not reading your work, I'll say readers are a lot gentler than you give them the credit for. To grab the readers' attention you need to write a proper summary, tag your posts properly, focus on your writing and give proper paragraph breaks. Include the characters in the story only if they are recurring characters. Don't clutter your 'character' and 'relationship' section or even tags. Keep things up that are relevant to you as a writer. I'm assuming you're going to write on AO3 and not on FFN or Wattpad.

We readers don't care about trivial things that are bothering you, although I can understand your feelings. If you can utilise the modern setting and make the readers feel, that would be a win. Don't shy away from taking creative liberties. Fics are meant to explore the uncharted aspects of canon. And writers do this all the time.

This is surprisingly difficult. I shamelessly admit that I like all of my fics, otherwise I wouldn't have posted them ;-)

So. Favourite five.

I'll start with Spare Parts, my Sci-Fi AU. I loved writing this fic, and I love the worldbuilding, I love the hostility of the environment and the resilience John and Sherlock show to not only survive, but thrive in a hostile world. It's set in the 24th century on Titan, but of all my AUs, it's actually the most canon compliant, ironically. It's also me going into the meat and bones of what Reichenbach meant for Sherlock and John, and my thoughts on why Sherlock did what he did. (it's also probably my most underappreciated fic in terms of effort versus response, but I love it, and that's all that matters ;-))

Next up is Nothing Gold Can Stay, a fix-it for S3. I carried this idea with me for months, and the fic came out in little bursts of hundred-word-snippets (in stark contrast to the sequels, which flowed out of my pen in a matter of days), but I'm really happy with the end result. I also always wanted to write a series of short fics that hang together, and this was the starting point for the series that I will continue, promise, as soon as life isn't quite as crazy. My plan is to continue the series as a sort of parallel to S3, but let's see what life does to me over the next few months.

Since this is about fics I like best and not necessarily underappreciated stories, it would be remiss of me not to honour the bakers here. Bakers with Benefits is by far my most popular story, and I like it a lot. It was great fun to write (I grin like a loon when I re-read the cake war chapter), and I love revisiting them in ficlets (which should be obvious, given how often I do it ;-)) They're so much fun, and they're so comforting. I love writing established relationship with them, because you can just throw whatever at them and you absolutely know they'll get through it together.

It almost feels unfair to my lesser-loved stories to pick my fic with the most kudos here, but, well, I really like it. Don't Read the Last Page is probably the most realistic life with a child fic I've written (and parts of it are directly ripped from real life), and it has one of my top three favourite conversations between Sherlock and John I've ever written in there (and also probably my second favourite first kiss).

So the last one is really hard, because like I said, I like all of my fics. But just for the sheer joy of writing it (I can't describe how eager I felt to "spend time" with this fic when I wrote it), and for the love of theatre and Jane Austen that's always in my heart, I'm picking my theatre/Persuasion AU Take Two. There's fics you struggle with, fics you labour on, and fics that take over your body and just pour out with sheer joy and creative flow, and this fic was definitely the latter. It also has PINING!, and I love me some good PINING!

i am a former member of team plasma. former. my username is ironic because i cope with humor.

i ran away from home at age 14- it's a long story - and ended up being indoctrinated in. i, like many others, were lucky to have a sort of "snap to reality" moment after ghetsis' first arrest, before the formation of neo plasma, but not before i spent 10 years of my life working for him. many people are shocked by how open i am about my experience, but i think its extremely important to talk about these things: if i could help just one person leave this cycle, or keep someone from entering it, then it would make the shame worth it.

i have dedicated my life to helping pokémon, as a way to attone, i suppose. my darling solosis, mini, travels with me, though i must admit she's quite the spoiled brat. to have such an innocent creature love and trust you is the most healing experience someone can ask for, and i acknowledge that i was so very lucky. i had a home to return to, i was able to find work despite my history, and physically, i bear only a scar on my back and a missing finger... also just so we all know i am a natural ginger and i am not going to dye my hair please stop asking thanks

Hmm I only have a few that end angsty but I guess that would be my canon compliant post-IVF Rain King fic, Driftwood Lullaby

Probably Aqua Vitae, but I also wanna spotlight one of my earlier fics, in which Mulder gives Scully a real wedding ring for their case in Arcadia, Though the Heavens Fall

I've gotten a couple of nitpicky comments and one actual hate comment (ironically that one was on my most popular fic!😆)

A prequel to Purplerow by @katy-kt-katie, an AU in which Scully is an astronaut, about the time she made first contact with aliens on Mars (I really wanna finish this but life has decided to just keep throwing bricks at me and I haven't been able to concentrate enough to write in so long😭)

16. What are your writing strengths?

I've been told I'm good at dialogue😅

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I struggle so much with choosing the right word to describe something sometimes, and also finding alternative words to use when I accidentally use the same word four or five times in the same paragraph😂

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I like reading it! I think it adds to the atmosphere of the story, but I don't think I've ever done it myself except to copy and paste the German dialogue from Triangle😅

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Lord of the Rings, I wrote a sequel featuring Aragorn and Arwen's daughter and posted it on Instagram back when I was active in the Tolkien fandom circa 2015 (posting fic on instragram probably sound super weird lmao but it was what people did, they'd post a pic corresponding to the fic and the chapter went in the captions)

I'm pretty proud of the fic I wrote last October for Mulder's birthday, Where a Million Stars Catch Fire

‘Fuck.’ 

The keyboards clacks as Ace softly drops his head onto it. He had been searching for the error in his code for nearly two hours before the desktop screen went dark, shortly before the lights did too. 

Blackout. 

He lets out a long rattling sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose as he sits up, pushing the frustration down. 

He considers himself a fairly composed guy, but there’s only so much shit you can shovel in the space of a week. He wouldn’t usually even be using the desktop, on the off chance of this exact scenario, but his laptop peaced out on Monday and is away being repaired. Nick said he should try to iron out the kinks of the game this weekend, because they have a meeting with a potential investor next week. 

He pushes away from the desk and towards the window on the rolling chair to investigate. 

The houses across the street don’t appear to have been affected, the lights still glowing through the drapes. 

He blinks, hesitating, before standing and unlatching the window. He peers over the ledge slightly, trying to discern whether the downstairs neighbours have any power. They haven’t been properly introduced yet, they only moved in a couple of weeks ago and Ace has been wrapped up in working on the game and hasn’t approached them yet. He was planning on swinging by his mom’s house to get some make-up cookies for them.

A sharp knock on the door startles him into suddenly ducking back through, thunking his head on the frame as he goes. He winces and cradles the sore spot as he stumbles through the dark apartment, only to stub a socked toe on an end table. 

He hisses a curse as another knock sounds at the door. 

‘Yeah, be right with ya!’ he calls, in what he hopes sounds friendly but comes out in a more strangled voice, as he tries to shake out the tingles now shooting up his leg. 

Ace involuntarily squints against the pain as he finally reaches the door, wrenching a hand through his hair in attempt to tame it down from where his grip on the back of his head has disturbed it, before opening the door. 

In the low-light of the balcony leading to his apartment door is a woman. He’s spotted flashes of her red hair through the window a couple of times over the past few days. She’s kinda shockingly beautiful up-close. Hair catching the slants of streetlight that make it down this side and glowing amber, stark against pale skin and her eyes, cool and blue as they assess him. Momentarily, he’s super glad the duplex’s lights are out because he feels his cheeks heat slightly under her gaze.

‘Oh,’ she says bluntly. 

Ace’s eyebrows rise as he drops the hand at the crown of his head. 

‘Hey?’ he says, tone rising at the edge of the word like a question. 

She shakes her head slightly, like she’s stirring herself from whatever her mind has snagged on. ‘Sorry, you’re just not what I was expecting. I’m your downstairs neighbour. My name’s Nancy.’ She punctuates her greeting by thrusting her hand out for him to shake.

He steps across the threshold slightly so he can take her hand. It’s June, but her fingers are slightly chilled against his.

‘I’m Ace… Not what you were expecting?’ he says as he shakes, before dropping back so he can lean against the doorframe.

Nancy clears her throat. ‘You’re very quiet up here, was expecting someone a little more…’ Her hand waves and her lips pinch as if she’s not sure how to end that sentence. 

Ace shrugs his shoulders, the corners of his mouth lifting in the smallest smile. ‘I work from home, spend most of my time in an office chair.’ 

Nancy nods like this makes sense. ‘Okay, the blackout,’ she says suddenly, all serious and business-like, ‘may have been our fault. Was our fault. My roommate, Bess, was doing… uh, a work thing, and might have blown a fuse or two. She’s calling an electrician now but we’re not sure when they may be able to come out. So I wanted to say sorry for the inconvenience in person. And apologise for not saying hello sooner.’ She finishes with a blown out breath. 

Ace shrugs a shoulder again. ‘No worries,’ he says coolly. It kind of was a problem, but with the way Nancy’s not meeting his eyes, he can tell she’s embarrassed and he doesn’t want to further that. ‘In fact,’ he murmurs, digging in the pocket of his sweatpants for his phone as his brow notches, ‘I can send a message to my buddy, Nick. He’s good with this kinda stuff and could probably come on over tonight, save you some time and some money.’ 

‘Well, I would greatly appreciate that, if you don’t mind,’ she says, eyebrows raised in question. 

‘Course not.’ 

‘Well, in the meantime, if you need any candles or anything, Bess has a few… thousand to spare. As long as you don’t mind your apartment smelling like candy cane or a pumpkin gumdrop whatever, please ask. Or if you need a package collecting or anything, any favor really… We owe you, after this. A chance at a second first impression would be great too,’ she laughs self-depricatingly. 

‘Nah, this one works. It was good of you to come up and explain, appreciate it.’ He waves his phone a litte, ‘I’ll let you know if Nick gets back to me.’ 

‘Great. Well, uh…’ She smiles. ‘I’ll see you around, Ace,’ she says as she strolls back towards the steps leading down to her apartment, not breaking eye contact until she reaches the top step.

‘Guess you will, Nancy,’ he calls after her.

Looking forward to it, he thinks.
