IOTA Reviews: Migration
You know, for a while, I thought Luka was one of the smartest characters in the show, and the fact that he's hightailing it out of Paris in this episode only continues to prove my point.
Let's get into the thirteenth episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fifth season: Migration
We start off with Marinette running over to the Liberty (with her friends laughing behind her back like the supportive people they are) and tries to talk with Luka about her relationship with Adrien once they're in private. Luka is pretty supportive, and it's a nice scene. Marinette then bumps into Adrien, who also wants to talk with Luka, and while the two try to get unstuck, we get a nice visual of Luka seeing the two as Ladybug and Cat Noir, which is there to remind the audience that he's known who both of them are ever since “Wishmaker”.
Adrien then talks to Luka about how he's worried something is keeping Marinette from being honest about her feelings. Luka gives him some advice on how just because he doesn't know everything about Marinette, it doesn't make her feelings for him less valid, and vice versa.
After Adrien leaves, we get an appearance from everyone's favorite deadbeat dad, Jagged Stone. He asks Luka how he can be a better father like he didn't miss years of child support, but all Luka really says is that he needs to spend time with his damn family. Of course, what I like about this scene is that it avoids the usual narrative pitfall of trying to say that Jagged and Anarka, Luka's mom, should get back together, and instead shows Jagged developing feelings for his agent, Penny.
Speaking of, after Jagged leaves, Penny comes in to come to Luka for advice. Okay, is Luka just the Dr. Phil of this show's universe? Penny talks to Luka about her sudden feelings for Jagged Stone.
Penny: No, I don't know why I'm in love with your father. He's disorganized, childish, selfish, and musically speaking, he's no David Bowie. Truth be told, your dad's a walking disaster. So why do I love him?
Luka: Does he make you happy, Penny?
Penny: Yeah. I just can't figure out why!
It's almost like this show will randomly pair people up at the drop of a hat. But hey, at least Luka hasn't asked if Kagami is single yet.
Before Penny leaves, Bob Roth, Jagged's producer, demands to know where he is, as he needs to record a new album. Bob learns that Jagged had children with Anarka (ignoring the potential scandal it could create), so Anarka promptly throws him out of the boat in a scene that I'm pretty sure is meant to be a reference to that one running gag from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
youtube
Either way, Jazz's scream was funnier.
Kitty Section then practices their latest song about how you don't have to be rich, because even the songs in this show aren't exactly subtle with their messages. Bob somehow gets back on the Liberty completely dry, and offers the band a contract.
Bob: How would you like to sign a contract with me?
Luka: Actually, Bob, you already offered to sign us... Marinette: And you never followed up. Did you forget?
Bob: Huh? Uh... of course! I remember! I was just waiting for the right reason—uh, I mean, the right time! I was waiting for the right time to have you guys sign the contract!
My God, even the characters in this show want to forget it used to have good episodes.
Anarka throws Bob off again, where she and Luka talk about how everyone deserves a second chance and that change is possible.
youtube
Yeah, funny how that message almost never came up with Chloe, Lila, and Felix last season, isn't it? And given that they're going to use Bob as an example of this lesson, I don't think it's going to be a positive one. So right after Luka generously decided to give Bob a second chance, Bob offers them a new contract to sign... and as soon as he does, he screws them all over thanks to a lot of fine print they didn't stop to read.
Ivan: He can fire us whenever he wants?
Bob: Yep, and I just did, by the way.
Rose: The name Kitty Section belongs to him?!
Bob: Yep. It’s ugly, but it’s mine. Marinette: He owns everything you’ve made and will make over the next thousand years!? Bob: Gotta cover all bases.
Zoe: Marinette's costumes, the music video Nino shot, the website Mylene runs...
Bob: All mine!
Adrien: And you can’t even start another band together?
Bob: Course not, that’d be unfair competition! EVERYTHING belongs to me! Everything you are, everything you say, everything that’s in your hearts belongs to me!
See, kids? This is why you should never trust bad people. It doesn't matter if they say they want to improve. They just want to trick you and ruin your life, so if you're ever wronged by anyone, that person is never able to redeem themselves, especially if they're rich. As we all know, rich people are far worse than insane supervillains who want to rewrite reality. Just ask the biggest monster in the show, Chloe Bourgeois.
So yeah, Luka's optimism being taken advantage of is enough to attract the attention of Monarch, who attempts to akumatize him into Silencer again. Monarch realizes that Luka knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities (why he didn't think to look into it, given Viperion's powers, is left unanswered), and angrily smashes his guitar to free himself of Monarch's influence.
So not only did he stop himself from getting akumatized, he's also one step closer to becoming a true rock star.
Somehow, Bob thinks only keeping Luka on board would mean he wouldn't hate him, but Luka isn't buying it. Bob is shocked that Luka wouldn't want to work for an asshole like him as Luka tears the contract in half, but Bob has backups. Monarch decides to settle on Bob instead, akumatizing him into Gold Record.
Gold Record's design is... okay. It's still better than Sole Destroyer, and it's definitely better than Moolak. The gold coloring looks nice, and the euro symbol on the record is a nice visual. His powers are pretty much just a combination of Pixelator, the Collector, and Truth's powers, transforming people into records who sing their true feelings while using the Horse Miraculous' Voyage to throw the records into space. Nothing too original there, but it's a good metaphor for sleazy music producers, and it works for this story.
Rose and Anarka are the first of Gold Record's victims, and in a hurry, Luka lets Adrien know he knows he's Cat Noir, giving him a place to hide. Just as Juleka is hit by Gold Record, Ladybug and Cat Noir arrive on the scene. While Cat Noir holds off Gold Record, Ladybug tries to come up with a plan.
Ladybug summons her Lucky Charm, getting a knitting needle. She realizes her plan will need to involve using Luka as bait. Luka is forced to reveal that he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are, and what will happen if Gold Record gets him, setting up a tough choice that will force Ladybug to rethink her plan... and then the next scene happens, where Luka lets himself get hit, where Ladybug manages send Gold Record's record flying with a makeshift bow and arrow created from the knitting needle and a nearby fiddle, which Cat Noir immediately Cataclysms.
Ladybug de-evilizes the Akuma, uses Miraculous Ladybug to fix the damage, and gives Bob Roth a Magical Charm that even he knows is useless at this point. Ladybug and Cat Noir decide to call it a day and let Anarka throw Bob Roth out again.
Luka reveals that he knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities (because once again, sharing that information with your friends is totally fine for some reason), and that he can't stay in Paris. After revealing that he had Fang eat all of Bob's contracts so Luka isn't bound by them anymore, Jagged offers to take Luka around the world to finally make up for years of absence while Luka makes Juleka the new leader of Kitty Section. And so the episode ends with the Couffaine family sharing a hug while Luka gives one last look to his friends Marinette and Adrien.
This episode was just average, all things considered. The plot and the lesson it was setting out to teach, while not terrible, felt a little tacked on. It was if the writers were trying to acknowledge the stuff that happened with Chloe and wanted to show an example of redemption arc done right in the case of Jagged. It falls flat because once again, more focus is given to showing how easy it is to be screwed over trusting someone than showing the benefits to trusting someone, especially since Bob is already an outlandish villain we already have a lot of reasons to hate.
I'm also mixed on the handling of Luka here. While I'm glad Marinette isn't being forced to learn a lesson here, I don't get why Luka had to be the one to be taken advantage of. He's already aware of how easy it is for Monarch to learn his secrets, so it feels weird that he lets himself and his friends get taken advantage of so easily. Outside of the scene with Ladybug's Lucky Charm, I don't get why he needed to tell the others the stuff he knew. I can sort of see why he'd tell Adrien, but why would he think telling his friends he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are wouldn't endanger them too?
Speaking of that, despite being established for almost an entire season, we really don't see enough of Marinette and Adrien reacting to Luka revealing that he knows who they are. Marinette only gets a few lines, and Adrien doesn't even get to say anything. While I am glad that Marinette and Adrien aren't dominating the plot for once, it feels weird that we don't get to see their reactions to something so shocking, especially with how often the identity rule has been enforced.
On the other hand, the writing is still handled a lot better than usual. I like how Monarch chooses to change his strategy to focus on Luka halfway through the episode, and the idea of the risk using Luka for Ladybug's plan brings is an interesting one, even if they don't really go anywhere with it. The running gag with Bob constantly getting thrown off the Liberty is a funny one, and it proves you can actually write slapstick that doesn't involve humiliating Marinette. Who knew?
As a whole, while I think this is the best episode of the season so far, this episode still has its fair share of problems.
THE BIGGEST IDIOT OF THE EPISODE IS... LUKA
Not counting the time Marinette got the award in my review of the Shanghai Special, we have the first character this season to get the Biggest Idiot Award twice. For someone who is usually smarter than the other characters, Luka made quite a few bad choices this episode. He decided to trust Bob Roth after he screwed him and his friends over in “Silencer”, he didn't think to read the contract he was offered, and after being endangered by what Monarch knows now, he decided to tell his friends and family that he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are, potentially putting them all in danger too. Yeah, the next few episodes will probably just ignore it, but there's always a chance Monarch could try another Optigami, even if he doesn't have the Peacock Miraculous anymore.
And with that, I'm officially done with the first half of Season 5. What do I think of it? Well, I think Immortan Joe said it best:
youtube
Yeah, this season was pretty boring, all things considered. To be perfectly honest, I struggled here more than I did last season because I wasn't sure what to say about half of the episodes I watched. There was almost nothing of substance these past thirteen episodes, and I could barely say anything other than “this episode is okay” or “this episode is bad”. Whenever I had ideas, they were usually extensions to things I've already talked about, like the Marinette angst, the historical and cultural inaccuracies, and the villains genuinely being incompetent. If you showed someone a few episodes of Season 1 and this season, outside of Monarch's new appearance, it'd be pretty hard for them to tell the difference.
But hey, maybe things will pick up in the second half of the season. Hell, maybe the next episode will be even better than this one, and... huh. Does anyone else hear an ominous whistling in the background?

✩‧₊˚౨ৎ˚₊ THE BIG DAY
ೀ synopsis- after getting back from the US tour it was finally time for Taehyun to get his wisdom teeth out, but of course he didn’t go alone Joohyung and Kai went for moral support
ೀ A/N- again I want to say thank you for 300 followers I love all of you 🫶🏼🥰
outfit | makeup
“Are you nervous?” Joohyung asked, while driving to Taehyun’s dentist. “Not really.” Taehyun shrugged. “Didn’t you see him back in the states? He was literally two seconds away from ripping them out of his mouth with his hands.” Kai laughed from the back seat. Currently Joohyung was the designated driver for Taehyun with Kai in the back as his moral support dog. “I’m fine…but you guys are going to stay in the room right?” Taehyun was showing a bit of nervousness making Joohyung chuckled. She hummed ‘yes’ while caressing the back of his head smoothing out his worries.
𝜗𝜚
Sooner than later the three were in the dentist room, Joohyung and Kai were sitting in the corner of the room while watching Taehyun lay there on the operation chair getting his wisdom teeth out. “He’s going to look so cute with his cubby cheeks!” Joohyung silently squealed, making Kai chuckle agreeing. “We have to take many pictures.”
It was actually a pretty quick operation since they only took two for now. “Taehyunie how are you feeling?” Joohyung asked in a baby voice, seeing how Taehyun was still a bit loopy. “N-Noona I…I love youuu~” Joohyung and Kai barely could understand him with all the cotton balls in his mouth. “We’ll help you wheel him out and into the car.” The nurse explained to Joohyung. “Ka-Kai I’m sooo thank…ful that you a-are with meee~” Taehyun looked up at Kai who was pushing his wheelchair out of the office. Kai couldn’t help but laugh at Taehyun drowsy state. “Oh, thank you hyunie!”
They finally made it outside and started the process of getting Taehyun from his wheelchair and the passenger side of the car. Joohyung held the door open while the nurse holds the wheelchair down, and Kai carefully moves Taehyun into the car. “Here’s the recovering packet for Taehyun-ssi, thank you!” The nurse smiled at Joohyung and Kai. “No thank you for taking care of our Taehyunie.” Both Joohyung and Kai bowed at the nurse before making their way into the car.
𝜗𝜚
Taehyun throughout the car ride was rather calm he was mostly zoning out while looking out the window. Until he pulled down the sun cover and saw himself in the little mirror, and gasped at himself. “Why do I-I look like thattt?” He gently touched his cheeks. “Oh-don’t do that.” Joohyung interlace her and his hands together so he wouldn’t touch his cheeks. “I love you noonaa~” Taehyun carefully laid his head on her shoulder. “Ya, why is he so cute?” Kai was shock at Taehyun’s drowsy self. Luckily Taehyun fell asleep on Joohyung’s shoulder throughout the whole car ride.
Once they made it back to the dorms Taehyun was less loopy and was a little more conscious, which really helped the duo take him up the elevator and into the apartment. “Is our hyunie back?” Yeonjun was the first member to meet them at the door. “Hyung!” Taehyun hugged Yeonjun, making the members laugh. “He isn’t has loopy as before.” Kai laughs. “Ay, why is he so ugly.” Soobin jokes, but it did earn him a little slap by Joohyung. “Be nice to my baby.” She furrowed her eyebrows at Soobin. Soobin pulls her into a hug basically saying ‘sorry’.
“Taehyunie let’s take you to bed.” Beomgyu guides Taehyun to his shared bedroom with Kai. “Noona you really look like his mom in your outfit.” Yeonjun leans on the counter while looking at her up and down. “I was thinking that when I saw the photo we took with his dentist.” Joohyung laughs at herself. “I don’t even want to know what moa is saying.” Joohyung throws her phone on their couch.
“Noona! Taehyun bit me!” Beomgyu’s screams startled the two cats in the kitchen. Yeonjun and Joohyung ran to the room the rest were in. “What happened?” Joohyung sees Beomgyu pouting while looking at his bit finger on Kai’s bed, while Kai was reading on how to change Taehyun’s gauze from the packet the nurse gave you, and Soobin who getting disgusted at Taehyun’s bloody gauze. “Can’t leave the kids alone for a second.” Yeonjun shook his head.
Joohyung immediately went mom mode and got Taehyun to sit up and followed the directions closely, as she was changing the old bloody gauze with Kai being her little helper. “Done. Now lay down and don’t bite Beomgyu no more and go to sleep.” She carefully laid Taehyun back down.
What would they do without Joohyung.

have any rodrigo and nadya headcanons?? like the both of them together and their friendship behind the scenes??
ANON I LOVE YOU
// weed, death, minor ed mention, abuse mention
general:
they're the kind of friends that are super cool with cuddling bc they both have insane ptsd and both have been out of the romance zone for literally eons
rigo's just not feelin' the dating scene, nadya's just super fucking bad with people
they'll sneak into each others dorms and sometimes crash on the floor bc of nightmares
rigo's good emotionally, he's gotten so much better so much faster because he had a really good family growing up
nadya took far more damage and had so much less support growing up; their drastically different childhoods affected how either one processed the deaths of their friends and they both respect their current standings
rigo's the only person nadya lets do whatever he wants to her; like he'll hug her and smother her in physical affection and she's just so comfortable around him that she'll just keep the conversation going
in comparison, nadya will do fucking anything for him. he'll mention something little about being hungry and nadya will sneak the biggest piece of garlic bread she can find from the DFAC to give it to him
its so funny to see them in public bc rigo's waving to people, he's smiling, he's got blue jeans with smiley face patches stitched onto the legs, some indie bands merch as a shirt, and vans or converse on. like he's so fuckign californian its insane.
meanwhile he's got his guard dog who's wearing a sweater and a hoodie and jeans/dickies in 85 degree weather, her face mask just dribbling sweat.
rigo's the bark, nadya's the bite
rigo: dogs
nadya: cats
nadya's a good cook, rigo's a good baker; when nadya goes to san diego, they'll make huge meals together and mix their cultures together
nad makes a lot of Mediterranean/morroccan stuff bc of her dad, bastilla, a lotta couscous, yk (plus some slavic foods, but her favorite things are falafels and tzatziki)
rigo's got conchas lined up, ready for baking, he's really good at making little designs and adding cute little details to make the concha’s that more enjoyable. how he makes hello kitty out of a sweet treat, no one knows
nadya and rigo used to have smoke sessions after the crash bc of their nerves, then made the mutual agreement to stop for each others sakes
bonded over the fact that they're both first gen
can read each others body language fluently, the other doing whatever is needed to make the stressed one comfortable
nad's learned a lot from rigo's emotional maturity; they'll hang out and paint nails and watch shitty two star movies on tubi and just talk for days on end. up all night talking about shit
rigo's got a lot of good advice from experience, nadya's got good advice bc shes really logical, even without the experience that rigo's got, they're able to bounce off each other
matching blood types
knows that nadya prefers not to talk much in public, or really be out at all when its not dark out or cold-- she likes excuses to cover herself up bc of her scarred skin--, so he's literally the "excuse me, she asked for no pickles" but it's only half true bc rigo actually hates pickles and nadya is a food vacuum
whatever he doesnt want, he'll pick off his food and either put it on his or nadya's plate, and she'll poke it with her fork and wordless eat whatever's discarded
he asks if nadya's hungry often bc he knows about her parents neglect growing up, so she'll often overlook how hungry she is bc she wasnt used to eating on a schedule
yesenia (rigo's mom) calls nadya gordita
christmas specific:
rigo was the first person to ask nadya about why she was so fucked up about the holidays and she opened up about her mom and robin
rigo was like "well u could come back w me for christmas my family loves people" and she was super hesitant (pre-accident nadya), but agreed and followed him back to san diego
nadya was pretty reserved about the whole thing, but rodrigo did everything he could to make her feel comfortable, even giving her little translations for stuff here and there
"oh yeah, but don't say that shit around my mom. like don't say no mames."
"why?"
"i think she'll kill me"
nadya had her first nice christmas; no guilt, no anxiety, nothing that made her regret being there. rigo's parents absolutely loved her, especially b/c she offered to help with everything
presents were opened up at midnight and, even though nadya didn't get anything bc the cassidy's weren't expecting her, she still felt so much love
that was also the first night when the two of them had to sleep in the same bed, and they just laid awake staring at the ceiling for a while.
rigo's not super good at keeping things to himself-- bud's got a bad filter-- so he was overthinking the entire time.
"hey nadder i just wanted you to know that this isn't like a sexual thing."
"what?"
"like im not into you."
"i didnt think you were"
"okay"
there was a moment of silence where neither one of them said anything bc nadya, who is so bad with social cues, just thought her friend was giving her a heads up, and rigo, who is much better with social cues, was panicking bc he didnt want his best friend to think he was trying to do anything weird.
"nads im gay"
"okay"
more silence before she followed it up with: "... is that gonna change anything?"
"no. like i... dont think so"
"ok. goodnight"
"goodnight."
"you're gay"
"yes i am."
"that's good."
the rest of christmas, even up until the new year, was spent with the cassidy's bc they loved her so much and she really didnt have anywhere else to go
i have more but its late and this was what i've got so far anon you're so cool and smart tysm for asking about rigo :)

It's been five months since we had to say goodbye to Odin. I see his pictures a lot on my phone, as one super cute picture my wife got of him is my background and my lock screen rotates through all kinds of pictures I selected on my phone.
In the years since my mom died, we have had a lot of loss. Sebastian, Scooter, Bronx, Jordan, Maleficent, and Odin. And we did have to rehome a dog Daymon because he could not handle the life we are currently stuck in at this moment, living in a trailer.
There are people out there that understand and sympathize with losing a pet. That like a lot of people, my wife and I, treat pets like our children so we take their loss extremely hard.
It still hurts so much to think about them, to think about all their 'annoying' behaviors and miss them. To think about how they would beg for attention, sit in our laps, love on us, etc and just wish we could have just one more day with them.
And for most of them, besides two, they were old and we knew their time was coming but that still doesn't make the day they leave us any less hard.
In fact it's made things even harder for us with the babies we still have.
We are constantly panicked over them, watching out for any possible illness in the event we need to run them directly to the vet. And at times, we start to get jumpy over things even when it's not even a big deal or even a thing.
I would not for a second trade having had any of them for anything else. I still would have adopted them, taken them in, etc even if someone had told me the exact reason and date that they were going to pass away.
We adopted Odin and very shortly afterward we found out that he had a terminal illness that was expensive to treat and would largely limit his life span but we still kept him, still loved him to the fullest because he deserved it and deserved to have a wonderful life outside the small cage his previous owner kept him in before he passed away.
But, with every single one of them, we still think about what ifs. Was there something we could have done to give them more time? Did we miss something? Did they have longer to live and we gave up too soon? Or did we hold on to them longer than we should have and made them suffer because we didn't want to let them go too soon?
Indi is ten years old and she seems super healthy and active and we are doing our best to walk her and take her to the dog park to try and keep her as 'young' as possible. But, we both know that in her old age anything could happen now. Jordan was ten when he gave up on life.
Miles is turning five this December and already him and Ursula who is turning four are slowing down. (Ferrets don't have a very long life span and it's a miracle if they make it to ten).
Watching them go from playful youngins to elderly old folk is so hard. We don't know how old they will get to be, as we adopted them from people who abused and mistreated them. Ursula's sister Maleficent didn't survive the abuse despite the thousands of dollars we paid for her medical care trying to help her make it through.
All I can do, is keep loving my babies every single day and enjoying what days we still have left with them. But, my heart is heavy knowing that for those three we don't know how much time they truly have left.
All the rest of our pets, besides our cat Quincy, are two and under and we still have a ton of years left with them, we hope.
I can't picture my life without them, though I know one day I will have to live that said life, but they are my babies.
My family is what helps me make it through the day. Knowing I have to work the two jobs to support all of them, is what gets me through the exhaustion.
Nothing makes me happier than coming home to my wife and son and all of our little babies who greet me at the door ready for my love and affection.
Even the bad days when Ursula, Chester and Athena are in a mood and feeling bite happy, I'm still enamored by them.
With all the loss, it brings a huge cloud over a lot of things. Like knowing there will be a day where I don't have a huge argument with Luna as she talks back to me while I'm telling her to back away from the front door so I can help her go outside to go potty. Or Moose's deep soft howls when he is excited to see us, or his whole body tail wags as we are petting him when we get home.
Or Indi's want to be petted, so much so to the point she overwhelms us and we have to just push her away and tell her to hold on a second cause she is just being too pushy.
Or Quincy's irritating head butts on our face as we are laying down to sleep but he wants to be scratched and kissed and loved.
Or the Wednesday's insane need to crawl up our clothes to get our attention.
Or Cookie insisting to get inside my sweater or in my hood.
Or Cream and Chester's annoying need to try climbing down our front stairs to get outside.
Or Loki's sudden crazyness and playfulness the moment he realize we are playing with him.
The list goes on and on. They are all so unique and fun and loving and I just wish they lived as long as we did so we never had to say goodbye.
But, I know, our past losses and our future ones, won't stop us from adopting more. Because, once our house is empty, we will want more babies to give all the love and attention to even knowing that we will lose them one day.
I'm just sad. I miss them so much.

AOT characters x their partner on social media is something I love thinking about omg. Eren is the number 1 menace, I swear, he likes keeping an aesthetic and he wants your face on his profile, and he wants to be in yours, and he will brainstorm for cool captions for you both 😭 Jean acts all shy, but that tall mf also lowkey feels the same way as Eren 😭. Mikasa is very relaxed and cute about it, she’s so effortless when it comes posting you on her feed, same with Sasha probably. Connie would post your funny faces 100% while Armin….blonde coconut I feel would be shy at first but is a fan of couple-y posts. Same with Erwin, and Erwin would add the cheesiest suburban dad captions like “my better half” or shit like “forever yours” 😭🥴😭 Hange is just all over, like they’ll be super unpredictable, from wildly funny to very touching stuff. Pick is just sweetness!! All around sweetness that can make you melt. Porco would be…actually I’m not sure, he seems like he’s in line with Eren and Jean 😭 Meanwhile, Levi would not care at all about social media announcements and “instagram official” and people outside his close circles find out about his partner on their tenth-year anniversary because they bumped into you both while you were out on a date 😭😭
No because you hit the nail on the head here anon!!
Eren and Connie are fiends and almost shameless in how much they want to be on your socials. If you do the thing where you record your food when you’re out to eat with Eren, he’ll interject into your video—“And me! She’s with me!! Show me!!” After some time—or if you tease him by purposefully leaving him out of the frame—he’ll just snatch your phone when you’re recording or taking pictures and makes sure to get himself with the front camera 😭😭 oh and you will be on his, it comes with the price of dating him, he loves posting videos that gradually zoom in on your face before you notice he’s recording.
Connie just photobombs everything. Even if just his eyebrows make in the frame, you better post it. He’s watching you. He loves taking funny selfies and posting them with absolutely no context, and videos too!! He reminds me of that TikTok of the guy who pans the camera to his gf laying in the grass is like, “We had a beach date, and, yeah I love her,” and pans the camera to his face, “I’m faster than her tho. We raced. But yeah, love her.”
Jean pretends like he doesn’t care if you don’t post him, but he cares 😭😭 he’s always willing to take a photo for you, but he wants to take them with you too!! He’ll not so subtly be like, “Hey, did you post those pics from the other day?” as a gentle “reminder,” and he’s honestly so cute you gotta give into him. He likes posting pics with you too, and claims he’s gotta keep it updated so he’s got something to show his mom—“She’ll think I’m making you up if I don’t have proof, babe.”
Armin gets nervous about posting you at first—the whole being publicly affectionate thing, plus the internet is forever, you know. But once he sees that he doesn’t necessarily have to post you guys holding hands or kissing all the time, he relaxes. Just a picture together, or a picture of you from one of your dates every once in a while is cool with him. He takes good candids and they’re his favorite to edit and make all pretty. He gets surprised whenever you post him, and he’s honestly not checking for it/on social media all that often, so he finds out through a friend like Sasha who’s bubbling, “Armin you guys are gonna make me jealous!! Your beach dates look so cute!!” And Armin’s a little confused, until she adds, “I saw the pictures on Insta!!” And now he’s slightly pink in the face.
Porco is… more likely than not recording you innocently vibing or minding your own business before he comes to bother you bye. He thinks your surprised face is so fucking funny and needs several video evidences of it. He gets grumpy when you get an off-guard of him, but just show it to him after and suddenly he’s like, “I look pretty good there, actually,” like yeah, dumbass, that was the point 🙄🙄 he posts his shit on Twitter tho, and is always acting like he doesn’t know you—“Girlfriend for sale, willing to trade for Breath of the Wild. At least $30 cash otherwise,” and thinks it’s funny when you threaten to block him. Or he’s subtweeting you when you CLEARLY follow him: “Anybody else know someone who falls asleep 30 mins into a drive?? No?? Just me??”
Erwin and his captions anon please I’m hollering. You know he uses the filters embedded into Instagram, too, and it makes some pics come out grainy/more dull. He comes questioning Hange with genuine curiosity, “How come your photos look so… bright? How do I do that?” Sir, open up VSCO and free yourself from the shackles of Sepia.
Levi could not care less about what and how much you post of him on social media, and his own is so scarcely updated; he really just has it so he’s not a complete ghost to the world, and to occasionally cure a fit of boredom. The pictures he posts are always nice tho, simple, cleanly edited and shot, and sometimes he’s not even in them. He doesn’t mind if you post him or not, but every once in a while he’ll stop by with a simple heart emoji in the comments. (To which Hange absolutely loses their shit every time and loves to joke about, “omgggggg are you and @leviackerman official???? 🤪🤪🤪)
Hange is the undisputed champion of photodumps and you cannot prove me wrong. Above all, they love posting a series of chaotic photos that tell a story—three slides dedicated to photos that caught you falling down; several photos back to back of you stuffing your face with food; frames of the both of you posing for a photo with the front timer but of course something made them topple over you. Their captions don’t help either, almost always unrelated from the disaster that just unfolded. Could have posted a photo dump of you two skipping (and falling) at the park and the caption is like “fun fact: a cockroach can survive up to five weeks with its head cut off!!” (The disconnect between the pics and captions always confuses Erwin. @e.smith: Very cool! But, what do roaches have to do with you guys looking like you broke your ankles? PS—is everybody okay?)
Mikasa is relaxed about posting you, and she lowkey really likes to be posted on your socials. She doesn’t say much about it, but she likes going back through your profile and looking and what you posted, and the comments from your guys’ friends being supportive. The pictures don’t necessarily spell out that you guys are Together, but that’s okay with her; she doesn’t need four pics of you guys kissing on her timeline to make her happy. She has lots of pictures she doesn’t post tho and you’d be shocked to find them, you gotta hype her up a bit to post them, “Mika you look hot here!!! The people need to see!!! Feed them!!!”
It comes naturally to Sasha, too. She likes documenting your dates with pictures and videos and has a blast editing them afterwards, too. Just AirDrop her the pictures you took and she’ll fix them up for both of you to post later. She’s a fan of silly matching captions and is always in your comments with a million emojis.
Pieck absolutely the sweetest girl. Her whole feed manages to naturally come out in soft filters and pastel colors. She always tells you she doesn’t have to edit a thing when you’re in the picture. Definitely posts photo dumps that include pics of food, sunrises, her cats, and a few off-guards of you thrown in there. Abuses the bugs and sparkly emojis in the captions.
Annie literally posts one pic a few months (by a few months, I mean like 11 months) into your relationship with the simple and upfront caption: “This is my girlfriend” and everyone is in the comments immediately bye. Berty is acting super surprised even tho he basically set you guys up, somehow Reiner genuinely didn’t know, and Sasha is clowning him for not catching on, and then he’s like “wait since when????? i thought they were just really good friends????” Mikasa comments a singular scissor emoji and it sends everyone into orbit, even Annie likes the comment.
#anonymous#annie and mikasa having this weird friendly but teasing but blunt dynamic on social media is the reason i’m still here#every once in a while annie comments on mikasa photos wirh something obvious like ‘your hair is getting longer.’#and mika is like ‘yeah i know i’m growing it myself thanks annie’#they’re so fucking funny bye#aot x reader#minicanons

When the Chips Are Down
part 1
masterlist
Hello, my darlings. I feel so bad. I haven’t been updating, so I decided to do something that will likely make you all come for my head since this really won’t be updated for a good while. But for now, it’s all I’ve got for ya, but I do have a chapter of SW over half way done, but for now enjoy the first chapter of ADG’s sequel even if the rest won’t be coming for a while.--- chaotic puff
The ride to the airfield was nothing if not awkward. Namjoon sat on his side of the car and Y/N on the other. Namjoon was trying to reign in his temper, and Y/N simply didn’t want to talk. There were so many thoughts bouncing around her head, so many things they needed to talk about. She didn’t want to though. She wanted to pretend that he’d never come at all. She wanted to go back to her little cottage with Mark. She wanted him to hold her and talk to the baby like he always did, but that wasn’t an option anymore, not with Namjoon back in the picture.
“Where are we going?” She asked after a while. The tense silence was killing her.
“The airport at Pisa. I have a private jet waiting there to take us back to Seoul.”
“I can’t fly. I’m in my third trimester.” She murmured wincing as the baby sent a particularly hard kick to her stomach immediately catching Namjoon’s notice.
“Are you alright, jagi?” He asked moving to her side in a flash, hovering over her eyes darting over her worriedly looking for signs of distress.
“I’m fine.” She groaned pressing a hand to her belly. “The baby’s kicking.”
His face immediately lit up with a smile as he pressed his hand to her belly waiting intently for another kick. None came though. He looked back up at her disappointed, and she sighed moving his hand to press against different spot on her belly one where he was more likely to feel something.
“Give him a second. Little pest loves pummeling my insides.” She grumbled sinking back into the seat.
Just then the baby sent another kick landing it just under where Namjoon’s hand was pressed. He jumped at the odd sensation turning his awed gaze on her before looking back down at her belly in wonder. “Does it hurt?” He asked voice barely above a whisper.
“When he kicks like that? Yes.”
“It’s a boy?” He asked excitedly already imagining a little boy with her eyes and his dimples, a little heir for his empire.
“I don’t know actually.” She mused looking down at her bump fondly. “I never found out.”
“Jin can tell us later.” He grinned turning his attention back to her belly rubbing soft circles across its surface. “All that matters is that you and the baby are healthy.”
“I still can’t fly.” She reminded him. “It’s not good for the baby.” There was a hope, however small, that if she could stall him, then she could slip away.
He smiled at her fondly. “I have Jin waiting at the jet. He’ll monitor you throughout the flight.”
“Oh,” She breathed disappointed by the development, but of course he had thought of everything. He was always a step ahead no matter how hard she tried.
The ride was not long. It less than a two hour drive to Pisa, and as promised Jin was waiting on the plane for them. He smiled at her and settled her into one of the cushy seats.
“Can you lift up your dress for me, sweet girl? I can pull out the pajamas too if you’d prefer. They may be more comfortable for the long flight.” He asked.
“The pajamas please.” She nodded tiredly, and Jin happily went to fetch them for her, ushering her up and into a small bedroom at the back of the plane where she was able to change in peace.
Jin helped her back to her seat when she emerged in a pair of silky pajamas and slippers. He had been right. It was going to be much more comfortable for the flight, and if she could avoid Namjoon by sleeping for most of the flight, she would.
“I’m going to attach a fetal monitor to your belly so we can keep an eye on the belly. I have a labor and delivery nurse on the flight as well to help keep an eye on mom and baby.” He grinned gently pressing the little stickers onto her belly as he addressed both her and Namjoon who was hovering nearby. “It’s good to see you, Y/N. How far along are you now?”
“Thirty-four weeks.”
“Not long till the little one arrives then.” He nodded giving her one last smile and moving away to sit elsewhere as Namjoon settled in next to her for the long flight, taking one of her hands in his frowning at the simple gold wedding band that rested there.
Namjoon slipped it off with a frown pocketing the ring before bringing out the one she had left behind all those months ago with all its glitz and glory.
“I’d prefer if you wore your ring, jagi, and not some trinket from that pest.” He sighed slipping it on her finger. “You’ve cut your hair.” He noted equally displeased by the drastic change in length as he was with the ring he had just confiscated.
“It’s easier to hide when you don’t look the same as when you ran.” She huffed brushing a stray lock behind her ear, though it slipped out again shortly after. It was a major disadvantage to the shaggy pixie cut she now sported. She couldn’t tie her hair up, and she couldn’t get it to stay behind her ear either. She didn’t have any headbands on the flight to keep it out of her face either. Those were all back at the cottage.
“I don’t like it.” He grumbled. “I liked your hair before. Oh well. It’ll grow.”
“You have no say over how I wear my hair.” She snapped snatching her hand back.
His grin was sharp and wolf like as he stared her down. “I think you’ll find I have a say over a great many things, jagi. You’ve caused so much trouble. I can’t have you putting yourself or the baby in danger any longer. You’ll behave or you’ll find yourself in much more trouble than you’re already in.” He warned before turning his attention back towards her belly. “Is the baby still kicking?”
“He’s always kicking.”
She flinched as Namjoon laid a hand back over her belly again leaning down to whisper to her bump. “You have to be nice to your eomma. She needs her strength to make sure you’re healthy.”
Namjoon had missed her more than he liked to admit, but seeing her heavy with his child filled him with pride. He only wished that he could have been there for the entirety of the pregnancy. He wanted to be there for it all, the morning sickness, the cravings, the doctor’s appointments. He wanted to be there to watch her belly grow, but that had all been taken away from him. He would be there for the next one though. He was going to fill their home with children.
Yoongi already had a son. Jin was working on getting Hayan healthy enough to support a pregnancy. The younger boys were also beginning to express interest in starting families of their own. Taehyung was even beginning to talk about ending his seemingly never ending game of cat and mouse with his ‘little bird’, and he wouldn’t be surprised if Hoseok was already planning a family with Iyla.
Iyla. That was another variable he would have to deal with. Y/N didn’t yet know that her dear younger sister was in his hands, or more accurately, Hoseok’s hands. That was a surprise he was going to leave for when they arrived home, and Y/N was well rested from the journey. She had been right when she’d warned him that flying was dangerous for her at this point in the pregnancy. It was why he had Jin and two labor and delivery nurses on the flight. He was taking every precaution to make sure that both she and the baby would be safe. He’d never forgive himself if something happened to either of them.
Y/N was extremely uncomfortable with Namjoon’s show of affection and his interest in her belly, but she allowed it, too tired to really fight back for the moment as well as knowing better than to push him too far at the moment.
“He or she will be out soon enough.” She sighed moving his hand off her belly and curling up in her seat. “I can deal with a few kicks to the kidneys until then.”
Namjoon sighed before moving up the seat divider and pulling her into his arms resting both of his hands on top of her belly. “Don’t push me away. I’ve missed so much of our child’s life. Let me have this.”
“We can’t sit like this for takeoff.” She reminded him beginning to pry his arms away again.
“Just let me hold you till then.” He pouted placing a soft kiss on the juncture between her neck and shoulder. “I’ve missed you, jagi.” He murmured placing another kiss further up her neck.
“Please don’t.” She sighed squirming in his arms.
“I haven’t held you in months, jagi.” He released a sigh of his own letting her go so she could settle back in her own seat as the flight attendants readied them for takeoff.
As the plane took off climbing higher into the sky, her heart sunk further and further. She didn’t want to leave Italy behind. She didn’t want to leave Mark behind, but she didn’t have a choice. Even if it wasn’t for the baby, she wouldn’t have had much of a choice. Namjoon was a sneaky bastard, and he always seemed to be a ten steps ahead of her. She had been lucky to have so much time away from him, but all good things come to an end eventually.
She knew there wasn’t much hope for her, not anymore, but maybe there was a chance for Mark. Namjoon was a sadistic bastard, and Mark had had the audacity to take her away from him. It wasn’t something that Namjoon was going to treat lightly. Death would not come swiftly for Mark, but perhaps that would be his saving grace. The longer Namjoon waited to get rid of Mark, the better chance there was of Mark finding a way to escape. The man was a veritable magician. She was constantly amazed at his ability to get in and out of sticky situations. If there was anyone that could slip away from Namjoon, it was Mark.
“What’s going to happen?” She asked softly once the seat belt warning had been lifted and Namjoon had reverted to holding her in his arms absent mindedly rubbing senseless patterns into her belly.
“What do you mean, jagi?” He hummed smiling as he felt the baby kick lightly against one of his hands.
“What’s going to happen when we get back to Korea?”
His arms tightened around her slightly. “We’re going to go home, jagi. You’re going to need lots of rest with your due date so soon.”
“You know that’s not what I meant.” She grumbled pushing back slightly as she struggled to get comfortable. She was finding it harder and harder to be comfortable as her due date approached, and Namjoon’s proximity wasn’t helping.
Her discomfort was clear, and it wasn’t something Namjoon could allow. He needed her calm and rested for the flight, for the next few weeks really. “Jin!” He called bringing the doctor running. “Can we move Y/N to the bedroom? I think she’d be more comfortable lying down.”
Jin nodded with a smile helping Namjoon to move the heavily pregnant woman and the monitors to the back of the plane, getting them all settled before leaving the couple to their privacy.
Namjoon was careful to get her settled with pillows piled up at the headboard for them to lie against. He had her nestled against him despite her grumbling, but he knew despite her grumpy attitude, the new position was far more comfortable for her, and it gave her more room to adjust herself than the chairs in the front did.
“You never answered my question.” She reminded him with a sigh.
“You mean your punishment for leaving me? For taking our child and running off with that pest?” She nodded stiffly, waiting for his answer. “For the sake of the baby, I’m willing to overlook your little moment of insanity, but it all depends on how well you, jagi. I can be very forgiving, or I can make life very hard. I’d prefer to be forgiving though. We should be focusing on our baby after all.”
“What do you want from me?”
“I want you to keep your promise.” He chuckled. “I want you to be a good wife and mother. No more running. No more hiding.”
“And all is forgiven? Just like that?”
She couldn’t believe that. Namjoon was not a forgiving man. He was a shark. He would never forget, and he’d take into account every variable to keep her firmly in her grasp this time. She had one shot, one real shot, and she had used it already. Namjoon wasn’t likely to let her slip away again, especially not with a child in the mix.
“Not just like that, but it’s a start.” He leaned in nudging his nose against the spot just below her ear. “And after all, doesn’t our baby deserve the best start we can give them?”
“And you’re the best thing for this child?” She scoffed squirming in his arms again.
“I know I am. And what other choice do you have?” He chuckled nipping lightly at her ear. “You’re never leaving me again.”

Hey, Little Songbird
Chapter 16 - Ao3
Felix could only hope his mother would pardon him for thinking such harsh words, but he felt as though the situation merited it. Because this? Was bullshit.
He could understand, to a degree, where Marinette was coming from. Felix wasn’t a good person; ergo, put Felix in situations where he would be forced to do good to make him confront the benefits of kindness and charity and hugging snot-nosed orphans or whatnot. He could understand becoming a force for good; his family had the money and the influence to improve the live of the less fortunate, and he’d understood that ever since his mother enlisted his help with choosing Graham Films annual donations. He could stand losing some of his own money just to hear Marinette gush about the charity he chose, and how that money would be used (all information he knew, of course; you don’t donate without knowing exactly where your money is going).
What he could not stand is having all his time with Marinette interrupted by Cesaire.
Marinette’s reasoning was that she wanted her two friends to get along, but Felix suspected she just liked to see him suffer. Sure, he did Cesaire a favor once, that doesn’t mean they like each other! In fact, he would go out on a limb and say that Cesaire definitely hated him. Why? …He wasn’t sure. If it had been a few weeks ago, he would have said she was jealous he had been Marinette’s friend while she had been led astray, but now that he’d gotten to—bleck—know Cesaire, he was certain it wasn’t in the girl’s character.
He took the opportunity to ask Cesaire the next time Marinette forced them to work together on a project—this time, cleaning up the content of the Ladyblog. Apparently Felix’s demeanor would help push the blog in a more professional direction.
Cesaire’s fingers paused on the keyboard at his question. Even Marinette, who had been working on a separate project, stopped to listen in. “I don’t hate you,” she lied.
“Yes, you do,” Felix corrected. “I’ve seen the way you look at me, before your near suspension and after. You hate me, and I’d like to know why.”
“Felix, she doesn’t hate you—” Marinette tried, but Cesaire stopped her.
“Marinette, I appreciate you trying to mediate, but you don’t have to right now”—She flashed a smile at Marinette—“Felix, I don’t hate you. I just don’t like you.”
“Okay. Why?”
She drew back, shock crossing her face before she shut the emotion down. “Felix, the first time we met, I was an akuma. An akuma you caused. I still don’t know why you impersonated Adrien, but since you supported Marinette when I didn’t, I’m willing to tolerate you despite that.”
Oh. “I had forgotten that,” he admitted, looking away.
“You… forgot?” She didn’t believe him, it was clear in her voice.
“Yes. I was having quite the bad day myself.”
Cesaire looked ready to say something, but Marinette placed a hand on her shoulder. “Felix, I’ve been meaning to ask you… Why did you impersonate Adrien that day? Knowing you now… it doesn’t seem like something you would do without a reason.”
Felix pursed his lips. True, what he did that day had been… poorly thought out. He would even say that he’d acted rashly, but to be honest, he had planned it from the beginning. The entire time his father was on his death bed, the entire time Felix watched him die, Adrien was calling and emailing him, talking about his friends and modeling and school like Felix hadn’t begged him and Uncle Gabriel to come over and visit, to support them in their time of need like his family had done when Aunt Emilie went missing. Perhaps it was cruel that he and Mother tried to take back their family rings on the anniversary of Aunt Emilie’s disappearance, but it was cruel that they didn’t come to his father’s funeral because… because of a fashion show!
So Felix told them. Despite himself, he told the girls about his father and how much he loved him, and how it broke his heart to see the strongest man he’d ever met waste away in front of his eyes. How his mother cried for months as she sat at his bedside. How their company suffered with the CEO dying and his mother beside herself with grief, how Felix was forced to delegate power to those loyal to his father and their family, trying to keep their business afloat and still in their name.
“Adrien… is very cruel in his ignorance,” Felix said. “He’s more than happy to ignore other people’s problems until they affect him, then he’ll do whatever he can to solve the problem. And I… wanted him to be affected.” He shook his head, picking at Marinette’s bedspread. “I thought that if I caused him to lose all his friends… Well, that plan backfired, so there’s no need to go into detail. I should feel lucky that I got at least one of the rings back.”
“Rings?”
Felix showed off the one he’d stolen from Gabriel, the silver band glinting in the sunlight. The metal seemed to hum against the warmth of his fingers. “The wedding bands of Gabriel and Emilie Agreste were originally family heirlooms of the Graham de Vanily estate. Originally, they were supposed to be used when the eldest child, my mother, got married. Unfortunately, that was impossible.”
“Wait, your mom is a Graham de Vanily?” Cesaire asked. “So, your dad married into the family?”
“That’s correct; Grandfather arranged it back when Father was a mere director in our company.” Felix shook his head. “Mother and Father were supposed to wear these on their wedding day. But Aunt Emilie stole them for her own marriage.”
Marinette gasped. “No! Why would she do that!?”
“I have no idea; if Aunt Emilie ever said why, Mother certainly has never mentioned it. My grandparents disowned her for the theft—though, to be honest, they were already on the edge because Aunt Emilie was marrying someone they didn’t approve of—and it was only Mother’s intervention that kept them from reporting her to the police.” He twisted the ring around his finger. “These rings mean a lot to my family, to my mother… I know it hurt her that she and Father never wore them, even if Father created near replicas for their 3rd anniversary. She never wore hers though… I think she thought that if she did, it would be acknowledging that the rings would never come home.”
“What’s so special about these rings, anyway?” Cesaire asked, moving closer to look at, but thankfully not touch, his ring. “It’s plain silver.”
“Honestly, I have no idea. They’ve been in the family for centuries, and Mother said that you could only understand how precious they are until you and your love both wear them, but…”
“It’s not the value of the rings,” Marinette finished. “It’s what they represent.”
“Precisely. Aunt Emilie stole them to begin with. Now that she’s gone—and honestly, I’m not entirely convinced she didn’t just leave Uncle Gabriel—the rings should come home, no matter how sentimental Uncle is about them. He has made it very clear that he doesn’t consider us family, so there’s no need to keep family heirlooms.” Felix clenched his fist. “I already stole one of the rings; I can steal the other one too.”
Marinette was shaken, but Cesaire immediately nodded her head in agreement. “Go for it.”
“Alya!”
“What? If they were stolen to begin with, then there’s no problem with him stealing them back. Besides, it’s not like Gabriel can report him to the police. There is evidence that the rings were originally your family’s, right? Like, pictures of your grandparents wearing them, or even official documentation?”
Huh. It seems Cesaire is more than she first appeared. “That’s correct, we have both.”
“Then he can’t do much. At worst, he can try to pass them off as a different set of jewelry since the ring is so generic, but that would just draw out the investigation and bring more evidence against him to light. Even claiming that you were the one to steal the ring could be difficult to prove unless he got it on camera.” She frowned. “Getting to the other ring will be difficult though, since Gabriel will likely protect it.”
“Plus, if he knows you stole it, he’s not going to let you into the house,” agreed Marinette. Both he and Cesaire exchanged at look at her abetting. “What? You act like I’ve never stolen anything before!”
“But you… haven’t?”
A cat-like grin stretched across Cesaire’s face. “Oh? She hasn’t told you that story yet?”
A groan. “Alya, no!”
A smirk twitched across his lips despite himself. Perhaps working with Cesaire wouldn’t be so bad after all…

Sorry for Not Winning You an Arcade Ring | Joaquín Torres
✦ pairing — Joaquín Torres x female!Barnes!Plus Size Reader
✦ word count — 8.7k (should I even apologize at this point?)
✦ summary — your ex-boyfriend comes back into your life the moment you finally meet your dad — although things are complicated, your feelings are intact.
✦ request — Could I please ask for a story where reader is Bucky’s daughter and she used to date Joaquin but they broke up and then when she meets Bucky they get back together? Angst and drama and fluff and something steamy but no smut please?
✦ warnings — angst, drama, mentions of food and beverages, mentions of violence, language, depiction of symptoms of mental illnesses and light depiction of abandonment issues, daddy issues, fluff.
✦ author's note — coney island (the song) doesn’t have much to do with the fic, but I couldn’t take that line out of my head and thought it was fitting. Next Joaquín fic will be the one where reader used to date Peter, I promise.
════════════════════════
Joaquín swallowed with difficulty. His saliva had become unbearably thick in seconds. As he stood in front of the building, the building that now looked taller than it really was, he felt an itch in his neck.
Sam gripped Bucky’s nape, encouraging him to lead the way inside the building. Bucky was as frozen as Joaquín.
The older man was speechless. Joaquín, however, was not. “Are you sure this is the right building?” he rasped the question directed to Sam.
“One hundred percent.”
Joaquín nodded. The world was small, and he didn’t want to find out just truly how smaller it could get. “I’ll wait here.”
Bucky shook his head. Joaquín’s stomach dropped. He wanted to be there for Bucky, Sam had told him how important this was for him — when he agreed, Joaquín didn’t know he would come back to this place by supporting Bucky.
Connecting dots had never been hard, much less now that it was part of his job, yet he wanted to be mistaken.
“Let’s get this over with, boys.” Sam patted Joaquín’s shoulder. His other hand was still on Bucky’s nape, and by the looks of his grip, he wouldn’t let go.
Joaquín knew exactly what Sam was doing and he wished he had somebody to stabilize him too. “I’ll lead the way,” he mumbled.
“I have to talk to the—“
“There’s no need,” Joaquín interrupted.
Pushing the main door open, he nodded down at the security guard. Still the same old guy. The man smiled, nodding upward as though asking if Sam and Bucky were with him.
“They’re cool,” he assured the guard.
“It’s good to see you,” the guard told him, still smiling.
“You too.”
Joaquín slanted his head, motioning for Bucky and Sam to follow him. He walked past the elevator, explaining, “The elevator is always broken.”
Sam frowned. “We’ll take the stairs, then.”
Their steps, silent yet heavy, carried nerves and apprehension. Joaquín didn’t know how to explain himself or he should even try to do it, Bucky was scared of being rejected, and Sam knew Bucky wouldn’t recover quickly from this.
Joaquín leaned over to look at the paper in Sam’s hand. The number scribbled on it confirmed his suspicions.
“I—“ God, he couldn’t back down now. “Who will do the talking?”
“I will,” Bucky said in a quiet voice. “I just need you two there.”
“Yeah, man, no problem.” Joaquín was thankful his voice didn’t crack.
Bucky lifted his fist, yet his knuckles didn’t touch the door. Not yet. Joaquín felt cruel for wishing Bucky would take longer.
The knocking wasn’t desperate as Joaquín had anticipated. Perhaps Bucky wanted to make a good impression, or perhaps he was wishing nobody would answer the door.
The door opened and Joaquín found himself frozen. Stuck between running away and pulling you into the tightest hug you had ever received.
The euphoria of seeing you again was overwhelming and bittersweet. You looked good. You had always looked good in his eyes.
You were speechless. He wasn’t sure if it was because of him or because of Bucky.
Sam said a soft hi to fill the air, only making it worse for Bucky and unbeknownst to him, for Joaquín.
You stared at him, trying your hardest to smile although the muscles in your face didn’t give in. Eyes moving to Bucky, you found yourself rudely staring.
He did the same. Nobody said anything for a while. Three pairs of eyes were on you, and your brain couldn’t seem to function.
You had looked for him for years, in different countries, finding rejection in every corner of every big and small city alike.
Your gaze deviated to the other side where Joaquín was standing. You picked on Sam’s shift, sandwiched between the other two men.
Joaquín tried to hold your gaze, but you looked away.
“Uh...” you trailed off, eyes jumping from Bucky to Sam. They stopped for a moment before deviating again towards Joaquín. “Come in.”
There weren’t any pictures left in the living room, instead you had filled the spaces with ceramics and trinkets.
You had the same colorful couch Joaquín once spilled coffee on, and the same cozy chairs you had bought online by mistake.
”I should have introduced myself...” Sam trailed off.
“I know who you are,” you assured him. “Nat talked a lot about you.”
“You met Nat?”
“She came looking for me no longer after people disappeared. Maybe two months.”
You motioned for them to sit. Bucky and Sam did so on the same couch whereas Joaquín walked towards a chair. Your cat jumped onto the chair before he could take a seat.
The cat looked up at him and meowed.
“Fatatita,” you chastised the cat. “Let him sit down.”
Before you could approach the couch to pick the cat up, Joaquín lifted her in his arms. He sat down and placed her on his lap.
The cat curled up there, spiting you.
You sat on the other chair, closer to Bucky and Sam.
“Do you know who I am?” Bucky asked. So timidly you barely heard him.
You nodded.
“What else do you know?”
“Not much. You— you’re my dad and nobody knows who my mom is.”
Bucky looked down. “I’m assuming Natasha told you.”
“No.” You made a face, remembering that day like it was yesterday. “Somebody sent me an uncensored file. They probably wanted me to track The Winter Soldier down and make their job easier.”
“But you didn’t.”
You couldn’t tell if he was offended or relieved. “I actually did. I poured a lot of money into it and it never paid off. I lost track of you after Siberia.”
Joaquín squirmed around on the chair at the mention of Siberia.
Siberia practically ruined your life. Picking yourself up had not only been hard but something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted to do. Things had lost meaning. The only reason you were still here was your stubbornness.
Sam curiously asked, “Were you trained or something?”
“Not thoroughly. I’ve always been fat so I was useless in their eyes.”
Bucky sighed. “Sounds like them.”
You didn’t expect anything else from a terrorist organization.
“Oh! I didn’t offer you anything to drink...”
“I’m good,” Sam and Bucky answered at the same time.
You hesitated before turning to the other side. Joaquín barely shook his head. His fingers were buried in Fatatita’s fur as the cat laid on his lap with her eyes lidded closed.
“So... to what do I owe the visit?”
Bucky cleared his throat. “Well, I wanted to meet you.”
Your breath got caught in your throat. You had assumed he needed something from you. Knowing he wanted to meet you made your decade-long sacrifice and the heartbreak almost worth it.
“I was saving up for a trip to Brooklyn. I heard you were around there.”
“Yeah. It’s home again.” The glance he gave Sam didn’t go unnoticed by you.
You wondered if you’d be in the same situation they were if things had been different.
Home was a foreign concept to you. The word didn’t even feel real no matter how many times you said it in your head.
════════════════════════
Outdoor cafes weren’t really your style. However, you could admit the place Bucky and Sam had taken you was nice.
You took his offer to visit him and Sam for a week. Working from home was a pain in the ass sometimes in terms of organization, but it had given you the ability to look for him from the beginning.
The square table shook as Bucky placed his metal hand on it. “Would you stop texting?” He chastised Sam who was sat in front of you.
“It’s something urgent. I wouldn’t be interrupting family bonding time if it wasn’t, you know that.”
Sam’s comment was the end of it. Bucky reclined back onto the chair and gave you a small smile.
Oh, so Sam truly meant the family part. Family — a magical word that evoked foreign sensations in the pit of your stomach.
Sam’s cellphone started ringing. “I’ll be back in a couple minutes,” he announced as he declined the call.
Both Bucky and you followed Sam with your gazes. Your stomach flipped as Sam greeted Joaquín.
Sam smiled. “You got it so quickly?”
Joaquín nodded as he tried his best to not look your way. Sam took the envelope from Joaquín’s grasp.
He could hear your laugh as though you were giggling in his ear like you used to and the temptation was too much for him to handle. He was only human.
Bucky was laughing too, seemingly at something you had said. Joaquín didn’t blame him, it was easy to like you, to laugh with you, to regret every second not spent with you.
“Okay,” Sam sighed. “I didn’t want to ask, but I can’t bite my tongue any longer... what’s up with that face and those eyes you’re giving (Name)? You did the same—“ He groaned. “Don’t tell me...”
“I won’t tell you,” Joaquín tried to joke.
“Shit, man. What happened?”
“Honestly? I’m not sure.”
“Mmmh. Why don’t you join us?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea...”
“Please? I need you for this.” Sam waved the envelope. “But I promised I’d have coffee with them. She just got here.”
Joaquín hesitated to answer. On one hand, he knew Sam would need his help; on the other, he didn’t want to ruin whatever you had going with your dad.
“Come on,” Sam insisted. “Bucky is paying.”
Your eyes were on them as they approached the table. Sam once again took the seat in front of you, leaving Joaquín to seat practically next to you.
You wanted to flip the table and scream yet you remained in your seat, neutral and borderline frozen.
Sam leaned over to say something to Bucky. They were close enough for you to hear, but your ear didn’t pick it up.
You stood up from the table, surprising yourself more than you surprised the three men accompanying you. “I’ll place our order,” you announced.
The place was pretty in its simplicity, only decorated with coffee and pastry themed artwork. Functionality had been a priority and by how busy the place was, you could only presume they had succeeded.
There was a couple all over each other next to the window and a group of friends doing homework three tables from them. Laptops could be seen everywhere, just like people checking their phones.
You had to wait in line to place the order and the line was already building behind you too. The couple all over each other didn’t even seem to realize somebody was staring at them and if they did, they couldn’t care less.
You took a glance outside where Bucky was chatting with Joaquín while Sam made a phone call.
Sam slipped his phone into his pocket. “I didn’t give her my order... do any of you want to add anything?”
“I gave it to her,” Bucky assured him. “We thought you would take longer.”
Joaquín feigned interest in his phone. He had already read all of his messages, but he wanted to avoid the comment building in Sam’s mind. He could only hope his friend will keep it to himself.
He felt your presence as you sat back down. “There are two orders above ours. They will bring it to us.”
“Did you ask for extra milk?” Bucky asked.
“Yes.”
“Thank you. My acid reflux has been giving me trouble.”
“Because you eat too quickly,” Sam chimed in.”
You lifted both eyebrows. “You could have ordered tea.”
“Absolutely not.”
You snickered. Joaquín snorted. Instinctively, the two of you turned to the side to look at each other.
Something flashed in his eyes, the same you fell for that hazy summer. They were still warm, albeit tired now. As they became glossy while he held your gaze, you wondered if yours looked the same. You wondered if he had something to say and hoped he wouldn’t find the courage. You knew you wouldn’t be able to take it.
The order arrived, shattering the moment.
“Thank you,” Joaquín said, staring at you.
“No problem,” you rasped. Fuck.
“We’re hoping to convince her to move closer to us,” Bucky said, not subtle at all, as he took a sip of his beverage.
Joaquín followed the circumference of the mug with his finger in clockwork motion. “Good luck.”
“Thank you. I want to make up for lost time and the distance makes it difficult.”
“Videocalls are quite effective,” you reminded him.
Joaquín winced. His finger slipped into the beverage.
Bucky tilted his head. “Are you okay?”
“It’s hot.”
“Well, it’s coffee,” Sam stated the obvious.
You couldn’t take Joaquín’s reaction off your mind. Not even on the way to Sam’s and Bucky’s place.
Sam said he’d be home by dinner time. He also warned you to not let Bucky cook. You couldn’t even bring yourself to laugh.
The guest room was practically the same as the one in your apartment. Same size, and a close enough layout.
Bucky had a proper look at your luggage. “I’m surprised you didn’t bring more clothes.”
You frowned. “Why?”
“I don’t know. Your apartment is so well-decorated that I assumed things.”
If only he knew how hard it had been to replace the remains of Joaquín... “I did it at random, just trying to fill empty spaces.” You lightly changed the subject, “I like your couch, by the way.”
“Sam hated it at first, but he has grown fond of it.”
You faked a chuckle, prompting your cat to lift her head. Sprawled on the bed, she stared at you.
“Comfy, Fatatita?” You reached over to scratch her head.
“How did you come up with her name?”
“Count Von Count’s cat is named Fatatita. It’s an homage.”
“Count Von Count?”
“From Sesame Street. He’s a vampire obsessed with numbers and he’s also a Count.”
You sat on the bed, pulling Fatatita onto your lap.
Bucky sat on the edge, twisted so he could look at you. “Sooooooo...”
“So...”
“Where do you know Torres from? You had a weird moment there.”
You hummed, entertaining yourself with combing your cat’s fur.
Bucky didn’t let it go. “Now that I think about it, you knew his coffee order without asking...”
“Intuition.”
“Does your cat have intuition too?”
“Probably. They’re curious creatures.”
“You can tell me anything, (Name).”
”That’s the thing, there’s nothing to say,” you admitted. “Whatever you’re assuming is pretty much what happened.”
“I will kill him for cheating.”
“What?!” Seeing him cross his arms with a faint smirk on his face, you added, “You know what? Do it. You’re not making me talk.”
He let out a hybrid between a whine and a sigh. “I thought that one would work.”
“If you must know, the breakup was shitty.”
“Touchy subject, got it.”
Touchy would never cut it and you couldn’t understand why. “Do you remember any of your breakups?”
“From when I was a teen, yeah. But I don’t think they were bad.”
“Oh, so you were the one who ended the relationships.”
After a short silence, he admitted, “Yeah.”
Your body shook with laughter. ”At least you’re honest.”
════════════════════════
After an hour and a half of working on your computer, you decided to stretch and fix yourself a cup of coffee or tea. 9:00 AM was the perfect time to drink something other than water.
The door to the bathroom closed as you opened the guest room. The living room was empty, just like the kitchen.
Such a thing didn’t last. Somebody called on the door. Bucky hurried to open the door,
You heard Joaquín’s voice. “Is Sam ready?”
“Come in. He’s taking a shower.”
Great! Just who you didn’t want to see. Why was he even here? He should’ve been doing whatever he did in Las Vegas, not ruining your family bonding time.
Your cellphone rang in your hand just as you had finished pouring coffee in a mug. Seeing your neighbor’s contact name, you took the call immediately.
“Hey, Ben. Everything okay?”
Your neighbor giggled. You knew it was fake as always. “Hey, pretty girl. Where have you been? I made your favorite pastries yesterday but you didn’t answer the door.”
You ignored the pet name. “Oh! That’s very sweet of you. I’m out of town right now.”
“Ah.” You could hear the disappointment in his voice. “Is your cat by itself?”
“No, no. I brought Fatatita with me and my best friend is taking care of my plants.”
“Well, then,” Ben said drily, “call me if you need anything.”
“Thank you. I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Joaquín rolled his eyes. Oh, so he was listening in, huh.
“I’ll hold you up to that,” Ben said.
The line clicked and once again you couldn’t take your eyes off Joaquín who was glaring at you.
“What?” you snapped.
“Nothing.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
You hummed. He nodded. Neither of you gave signs of tearing your eyes off each other.
Bucky cleared his throat. “Am I interrupting something?”
“Nope.” You took the mug in your grasp. “I was just about to get back to work.”
Walking past him still hurt, maybe less than the last time, but that wasn’t saying much when he shattered your heart that day.
What was his fucking problem? First, he barged back into your life without warning, and then dared to give you that look as if you still owed him explanations for how friendly you were with other people?
The nerve of him! Of his stupid pretty eyes you were sure nobody could say no to.
Fuck. Fuck him. Fuck this. You were tired of not getting over him when he had no consideration of what you wanted or needed. He was the one who led you on by making you believe everything would go back to normal.
Had you made a mistake by breaking up with him to go look for your dad instead of asking him to go with you? Maybe, but at least you didn’t make him believe everything would be okay.
At least you had the decency to admit you had fucked up when you went back to him. At least you didn’t try to impose your wishes on him.
Now your day was ruined and you still had a shit ton of work to get through. Approaching the bed, you picked Fatatita up and hugged her to your chest.
You technically could have asked Bucky for a hug, he had said he wanted to make up for lost time, but you didn’t know him that well and it was embarrassing.
Begging for affection was something you were past of. You had taken care of yourself since you were 14, and learned the hard way that people didn’t deserve your tears.
Still, hot tears streamed down your face. You weren’t sure if you were angry, sad, or frustrated, but you wept until your cat forced you to let go of her.
If Bucky knew you had been crying, he surely know how to keep it to himself. You had lunch together between idle chats and nothing more happened.
You couldn’t get used to him, no matter how hard you tried or how much interest he showed in getting to know you.
Tearing down the wall you had built for years didn’t even sound easy to do, actually doing it seemed impossible as of now.
“I gotta run a few errands,” he told you as you carried the dishes to the sink, “wanna come with me?”
“I haven’t finished my work for the day.”
His face fell. “Next time.”
“Yeah,” you whispered.
Bucky gave you a tight smile and so you watched him leave with a weird feeling in your stomach. Was this how children felt when they saw their parents leave for work?
Sam didn’t take long to arrive. You didn’t have the full grasp of what they truly did, the superhero part was clear, but you didn’t know if that was their job or their side gig.
He greeted you with a smile. Trying his best just like Bucky.
“Bucky’s running errands,” you notified him.
“Yeah, Joaquín told me he called. I forgot my damn phone in the morning.”
“Oh...” You didn’t know what to say.
Sam sat on the yellow couch he used to hate. “Piece of advice?”
You braced yourself for the same thing your best friend had told you. ‘Joaquín doesn’t deserve your hostility.’
“Don’t call him Bucky to his face.”
“Wh—“ It took you a minute or two to process what he had said. “Oh, yeah. Sorry.”
“It’s okay,” he told you softly. His eyes were on you, analyzing you. “Are you okay?”
“Lots of new things at once... I’m not good with...” You bit your bottom lip. “Work is driving me crazy,” you lied.
Sam pensively hummed and you knew he wouldn’t touch the subject again. He probably knew you were lying, and he’d surely tell Bucky, but what could you do?
Well, you left Brooklyn in a hurry. Your bags had been made for days when the date finally arrived. Relief washed over you the moment you stepped into that plane.
Bucky’s feelings worried you, that was true, but you felt out of place in his and Sam’s apartment. They had been welcoming and kind, and the fact that they weren’t the problem stung.
As a teen you fantasized with everything you would do and say when you found your dad, but adulthood had crashed onto you in a giant wave. It washed away the naive illusion of one day having a normal life; a family.
You called him as soon as you got to your apartment. “Just wanted to let you know I made it safely.”
“That’s good to hear.” The line shuffled. “How’s the weather?”
“Fine, I think?”
“Sunny?”
“Kinda cloudy. It’s drizzling.”
“Ah.”
“Hey, I— I gotta go. I’ll call you soon, yeah?”
Bucky craned his neck as he looked up to the ceiling. “Yeah. Take care.”
You hung up immediately.
“What am I doing wrong?” Bucky asked out loud.
Sam threw his arm over Bucky’s shoulders. “Nothing. Just give her time.”
“We should get her a job here,” Bucky suggested. “Maybe that way she’ll move closer to us.”
Joaquín shook his head. “That’s not a good idea.”
“I forgot you’re an expert on her,” Bucky bitterly said.
Joaquín turned to look at Sam. His friend didn’t help him out and instead said, “You could ask her first.”
“Should I?” Bucky asked Joaquín.
Shrugging, Joaquín stood up from his seat and took his jacket. “I think we all know the answer she’ll give.”
“If you had told me where she was when we met—“
“I didn’t know you were her dad,” Joaquín snapped. He looked down, frustrated with himself for letting Bucky get to him when it wasn’t his fault either.
“You dated her.”
“Look, she didn’t tell me who her dad was. I just knew she was looking for him.”
Bucky was left speechless. Joaquín put his jacket on and walked towards the door.
“Joaquín...”
“Not now, Sam.” He pulled the door open and left the apartment without any other comment.
Joaquín walked down the street, aimless. He should’ve called — he could’ve called you right now in fact. But what could he say? He didn’t even know why it hurt this bad.
The next time he heard about you was a couple months later. Sam and him were on a quick mission and Sam felt the need to give him updates about the family dynamic.
“She doesn’t want to meet Sarah and the kids,” Sam ominously said.
“I understand Bucky and you want to have a good relationship with her,” Joaquín assured him, “but I don’t get why you come to me for advice when we’re not together anymore for a reason.”
“Because you know her and we don’t.”
“She doesn’t cope well with change.”
”Is there any way to convince her?”
Joaquín had asked himself the same question. Many times, in many places. The conclusion was always the same. “No.”
════════════════════════
Walking up the stairs with produce bags was part of your weekly routine. The elevator rarely worked and you didn’t trust using it when it did.
It was early. The market had been almost empty when you arrived — you had to wait for a few people to set up their products before buying.
Early mornings and all-nighters were your norm. You couldn’t remember the last time you slept in.
That was a lie. You could, you just chose to ignore it had happened. Everything always went back to a time you weren’t sure you would ever get over, and at the point you were in your life, you would rather ignore your past altogether.
As you reached your floor, you tried to remember if you had bought lemons or limes. Oh, well, you’d make do. Now you just needed to buy cat food and you’d be set for the week.
You had just unlocked your door when you heard a voice behind you.
“For a second there I thought you were out of town again.”
“Nah, I just really wanted some fresh fruit.”
Ben hummed. “Wanna hang out for a while?”
You considered it for a moment; you wanted to say no. Yet you gave in. “Yeah, why not?”
You let him in first. Ben avoided knocking the bags you had placed on the floor in order to open the door and stood in the living room, eyes on the plant near the window.
“Make yourself comfortable,” you told him as you carried your bags into the kitchen.
He remained in the same spot until you came back. His blue eyes focused on you as you awkwardly stood in front of him.
Ben leaned in, hands ghosting your sides.
You placed both palms on his chest and pushed him off you. “We said it wouldn’t happen again.”
“Right...”
Whoever was at the door saved you from an uncomfortable conversation by knocking with urgency.
Ben frowned. “You didn’t tell me you were expecting somebody.”
“I’m not.”
The moment you opened the door, you realized something was terribly wrong. Sam hadn’t visited you since the day you met him although he and Bucky called often.
He went directly to the point, “I need your help. It’s important.”
You nodded, letting Sam in. “I’ll talk to you later, Ben,” you said, hand on the door handle as you waited for him to leave the apartment.
You saw him glare at you, but Sam’s presence was enough for him to keep his complaints to himself.
Sam sat down on the couch, watching you as you hesitated on whether to sit down or walk into the kitchen.
“Want some water?” you offered.
“Sure.”
“Ice?”
“No, thank you.”
You filled your glass with crushed ice and a little bit of water and carried both glasses towards the coffee table.
With your glass between both hands, you asked, “What’s up?”
Sam didn’t look at you as he said, “It’s about Joaquín.”
“I—“
“Listen, I don’t know what happened between you two and I don’t care.” Sam made a pause, allowing you to munch on ice. “I haven’t seen him in two weeks, I can’t find him anywhere.”
You cleared your throat, fighting a cough. “And what do you want me to do? I don’t even know where he lives.”
Sam took a gulp of water, not knowing what to expect. “You said you weren’t trained. Your file says otherwise.”
“I never said that.”
You had been careful when you answer that particular question. You hadn’t been enough for Hydra, but that didn’t mean they didn’t break you first.
“Why did Viper spare you?”
You bit the inside of your bottom lip. It was more than complicated — you didn’t even remember much from that day. “I don’t know,” you answered honestly. “She beat me up and the next thing I knew, Kraken was taking me to my first foster family.”
“So you haven’t had any contact with her ever since?”
“No—“ You made a face. “Well... I think she sent me the first lead to find Bucky. The actual file that said he was my dad.”
Sam placed his glass back onto the table. “She’s been on and off in Vegas for a while.”
“You think she did something to him,” you asserted.
“Wouldn’t be the first time.”
You clenched your jaw. “How can I help?”
“Telling me the truth.” He became extremely serious as he added, “I know you have contact with Seraph.”
You squeezed your eyes shut. You didn’t care about Seraph, but the girls under her wing had suffered enough already. “I can’t tell you anything about her, Sam.”
“I won’t tell anyone,” he promised. “Look, (Name), I already talked to Zemo and he doesn’t know anything.”
“Why can’t somebody from the Air Force find her? Or him?!” you defensively asked.
Sam scoffed. “Just how much you know about him?”
“Last thing I knew he was choosing The Air Force over me.”
You poured ice into your mouth. Barely able to close it, you let a few little chunks melt before you started munching again.
“We don’t have time for this,” Sam lamented, “Joaquín’s life might be on the line.”
You shook the glass in your grasp. “I can link you up with one of her angels. That’s it.”
Sam nodded, pulling his phone out. “Give me her info.”
“No, no.” You put your glass down. “We go to Madripoor and the contact is made there.”
“I’m not taking you to Madripoor. Are you insane?”
“Probably.”
“Your dad would kill me!”
You shrugged. “Don’t tell him.”
“I can’t ruin my relationship like that.”
“Sam...” You whined when he shook his head. Almost pouting, you stared directly at him. “Please.”
“No, that face won’t work on me.”
“I’ll explain things to Bucky.”
“Oh, you will. You are taking a flight to New York in...” He checked the time. “In two hours and telling him to his face that you still have contact with Hydra.”
“I’m not a child.”
“That’s exactly why you’re telling him. Adults don’t hide shit like that!”
“You don’t get it.”
“And I never will. Besides, you owe this to us for the stress you’ve given your dad and for refusing to meet my sister and nephews.”
He was right.
You pushed yourself off the chair. “How light should I pack?”
Sam made a face, twisting his mouth. “I don’t know. Pack like you did last time just to be safe.”
Well, you had twenty minutes to pack. And to struggle with putting Fatatita in her cage.
“Hey,” you called for him from your bedroom’s doorframe. “Would you do me a favor?”
“Depends.”
“I bought produce that could go bad. Can you give it out? Everything’s on the counter.”
His face softened. “Of course.”
Your cat wasn’t too happy with being trapped in a carrier, much less with once again putting up with children in the plane.
So there you were, uncomfortable against the window with a whiny cat. You hated window seats and although planes were fine, you were sick of them.
Bucky picked you up at the airport without a word. He helped you with your luggage while you freed Fatatita from the carrier.
She snuggled up on your lap once you were in the car, but Bucky didn’t start the engine.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he softly asked.
You would’ve preferred that he yelled at you. Maybe he would once you explained yourself.
“My plan was to join The Angels.”
He didn’t yell. “What?”
“I was lonely.”
“You have a cat. You could’ve gotten another one or something. Anything that wasn’t that.”
“Yeah, and I love Fatatita,” you said indignantly as you massaged her head, “but she can’t talk or hug me back.”
You loved her snuggles, she was a sweet cat and you wouldn’t have survived the last six years without her. But she wasn’t human.
Painfully, you added, “I feel like I don’t belong here. You have Sam and his family already, you have a home...”
”We’ve invited you to join.”
You didn’t fit in with Bucky or with Sam, much less with Sam’s family — they sounded like nice people, but if Sarah was half as intuitive as Sam, she would be able to tell you were uncomfortable and you didn’t want to offend anybody.
You hated being alone and yet every path you took seemed to lead to loneliness. Maybe it was time to accept you had idealized your dad and he couldn’t live up to the standard.
Or maybe that wasn’t the issue, maybe you were as a whole. Living with it was your only option.
“It’s not that easy.”
“Nothing is.”
Yeah, nothing was easy, but this thing particularly was kicking your ass.
════════════════════════
Things between you and Bucky were tense. He took great offense after you confessed you had considered going back to Seraph so he barely spoke to you.
You had only heard updates about Joaquín — or better said, the lack of updates about him.
Focusing on work or anything that wasn’t the phone on the table next to the couch was practically impossible.
Sam’s call eventually came through. He said Joaquín was alive which wasn’t relieving for either you or Bucky.
You wanted to hear that he was safe and sound. Alive was good, but not enough. Not when you knew exactly the type of things Ophelia was capable of.
“Bring a jacket,” Bucky told you. He couldn’t hide how mad he was — his voice was rough.
You silently complied, making sure to leave water for Fatatita.
On your way to the hospital, you tried to find something to say. The silence was unbearable, but you couldn’t help but think you would be a bigger nuisance.
Bucky pulled into the vast parking lot and found a good parking spot in no time.
You didn’t want to go there. Your mind had already run wild and the things you could encounter terrified you.
Fear seemed like a distant experience from a naive child. You hadn’t been raised like this.
But you hadn’t been raised to love anybody and yet you were, so full of love you would have rather died.
“I’ll wait here.”
Bucky rolled his eyes and stretched his arm to open the passenger door. “You are not staying here.”
Huffing, you got out of the car and waited for him to do the same. You slammed the door closed and he glared at you.
You immediately regretted listening to Bucky and coming to the stupid hospital. What were you even doing there? What would you fix?
Joaquín looked like shit. You could feel each hit as your eyes analyzed his bruised face. To make it worse, his left arm was wrapped and immobilized. You didn’t want confirmation he had more injuries — you didn’t need it.
“What did you find?” Bucky asked calmly.
Joaquín struggled to speak. “They’ve been doing experiments on people. Kids included.”
“And you didn’t think of telling anybody in case you needed backup?”
Bucky called your name sternly, warning you to shut up.
“No. He deserves it. They could’ve fucking killed him!”
Joaquín stammered. Of course he didn’t have a good answer. Of course he had to worry you sick even years later.
You felt actually sick to your stomach. Regret and anger often came hand in hand, but they had never made you feel like this.
“Let’s go outside,” Bucky commanded. “You need air.”
He pushed you out of the room and all along the hallway. People looked at you weirdly, surely wondering why you were being rushed out of the hospital.
If air had filled your lungs, you didn’t feel it. Stripping yourself off your jacket, you looked up at the sky. Why did you have to react like that?
Showing you cared never brought you anything positive. When you didn’t put people in danger, you ruined your relationships. And now you were just acting like an emotional idiot over nothing.
You punched the wall out of frustration.
It was not nothing.
“Hey, hey, hey.” Bucky moved you away from the wall and further into the open-air parking lot. “It’s okay. I’ve got you.” His arm was tight around your shoulders.
“I just— I can’t believe him, dad! He’s always been this careless.”
Bucky became frozen.
“I know I’m being too emotional and I shouldn’t, I’m sorr—“
“Don’t.” Bucky tightened his grip on you. “Let it out, it’s okay. I’m here.” His voice broke. “Dad’s here.”
You hid your face in his jacket, for the first time in your life crying on your dad’s shoulder as he steadied you.
════════════════════════
You had to admit you missed the bus. New York wasn’t what people painted it as, much less the romanticized version your dad had presented you.
Either way, you were already there and you didn’t plan on moving out any time soon.
You were careful to not shake the reusable bag in your grasp too much. Bucky had never tasted your cookies and you would change that in a few minutes.
Memorizing the path towards the apartment was easy. Sam had given you a few tips so you wouldn’t have to call him all panicked because you were lost again. Luckily, he had gotten over it already.
Sarah was already at Sam’s and Bucky’s when you arrived. Apologizing for being late, you placed the homemade cookies you had brought on the table.
Sitting between Sam and Bucky, you asked Sarah, “You didn’t bring the kids?”
“Joaquín took them out for ice cream so we could talk about adult stuff,” she easily explained.
You glowered at Sam who had just served you a glass of lemonade.
“You’ve avoided him for too long,” he said.
“And you know exactly why.”
“I’ve heard both versions.”
You shook your head, knowing you wouldn’t win this argument. Sarah lifted her eyebrows.
“She’s as stubborn as her dad,” Sam told his sister.
“If I remember correctly, you used to refuse to admit you liked Bucky,” Sarah shot back.
“Don’t take her side!”
“No, no, Sarah, tell me more,” you encouraged her. “This is great material.”
She laughed, so did Bucky and eventually, Sam joined in.
The day you met Sarah had been bittersweet. She hadn’t held grudges against you for refusing to meet her and her children earlier and they welcomed you the same way they welcomed Bucky.
In contrast, you did hold that grudge against yourself. Yes, you hadn’t been ready to meet more people and were scared of not fitting in, but it wasn’t their fault.
The kids won you over the second you met them and the rest was history.
You tried to avoid glancing at the door when you heard the key sliding in, but you betrayed your pride and gazed at Joaquín the moment the door opened.
His face wasn’t bruised anymore and his hair was longer. He looked good, but that was to be expected.
You stood up to greet AJ and Cass, hugging them both. Joaquín smiled yet didn’t say anything.
As he parted from you, AJ asked, “You didn’t bring your cat today?”
“She’s at the apartment, probably asleep or enjoying her new cat tower.”
“You finally bought one!” Cass had given you the idea when you mentioned you wanted to find something for Fatatita to entertain herself. “She must be so happy.”
“Yup. Wanna see it? I’ve taken hundreds of photos.”
Both kids nodded. You unlocked your cellphone and patiently showed them the photos. The living room hadn’t been ideal for the cat tower so you put it in your office.
The problem, truly, was that the office was almost empty and you hated the color on the walls, but you hadn’t gotten around to buy paint.
Fatatita looked adorable in her cat tower, though. She would sometimes jump to the desk and lay on it, demanding attention. You never died her.
“You’ll get to see it in person soon,” you promised AJ and Cass.
Both kids were happy with such promise. They ran towards their mom, leaving you facing Joaquín. Once again, you couldn’t not stare at him.
“You look great,” he told you.
“Thanks.” You could’ve said he looked great too, but you didn’t want to make it awkward. “It’s good to see your arm isn’t broken anymore.”
He let out a small laugh. “Yeah...”
“I— Uhmm... I brought cookies.”
His face lit up. “I haven’t had one of your cookies in ages.”
You extended a hand in a welcoming gesture. “Help yourself.”
He didn’t move immediately and in consequence, neither did you. What ifs didn’t matter anymore, they didn’t even hurt that much — you just genuinely wished you could interact with him without feeling like you were crossing a line.
You used to be able to communicate without words, to know what he needed just by gazing at him from across the room. Joaquín would read your body language perfectly every single time and never once failed to respect your boundaries.
Not even the godforsaken evening he left.
Would the two of you ever be able to go back to what it was? You didn’t care if he still loved you — he probably didn’t. You wanted your best friend back.
“Anybody want anything from the kitchen?” Joaquín asked.
“Beer, please,” Sam replied.
Sitting back down, you drummed your fingers against your lemonade glass with no particular rhythm. You were being silly, there was no reason for you to be nervous.
Joaquín handed Sam his beer. He then stood behind you.
“Here.” He placed a glass full of ice in front of you. Crushed ice.
Okay, maybe there was a reason for you to be nervous. Something you hadn’t been on your first date or even the day you met him.
“Thank you,” you mumbled.
Bucky kissed the side of your head. You leaned into your dad’s warmth, letting the others speak. You were getting better at joining into their conversations, but this time you simply couldn’t focus.
His eyes were on you and yours would’ve been on him if you weren’t resting your head on Bucky’s shoulder.
You used to fantasize about something like this. A family afternoon, Joaquín and your dad getting along...
You lifted your head off Bucky’s shoulder and sighed. “I should get going. I’m still getting used to the subway.”
“Want me to drive you a little bit later?” Bucky offered. “I don’t get drunk.”
“I can drive her if she wants,” Joaquín said.
Bucky looked at him then nodded. “If she wants.”
The answer should’ve been no, but a little indulgence never hurt anyone. “Sure.”
So you stayed until Joaquín had to leave. Sam’s eyes lingered on you as you said your goodbyes — his hug was tight, an attempt to remind you things would be okay.
Bucky hugged you even tighter, almost lifting you off the floor. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” he whispered in your ear before parting from you. Your dad kissed your forehead before watching you go.
It wasn’t the first time Sam or Bucky tried to encourage you to talk to Joaquín. You weren’t dumb, you knew he had offered to drive you because he wanted to say something.
Had they planned it all out? You hoped they hadn’t.
The night sky was clear, perfect for a long walk. Although long walks in New York were different, they were a good vehicle to get used to the environment which your therapist would’ve loved for you to do. Oh, well, another night it would be.
════════════════════════
“You can drop me at the subway station.”
“It’s okay if you don’t want me to know where you live, but I offered to drive you home.”
Home. It still felt like a dirty word. He didn’t say it to mock you, there was no malice in his voice. Once again, you were the problem.
You gave him the address, explaining the directions Sam had given you to not get lost. Joaquín only hummed in acknowledgment.
After a mostly silent drive, you weren’t sure your assumptions from earlier had been correct. Maybe he was just trying to be nice and your brain had played you.
It was probably for the best in the general scheme of things, but you had to admit you were disappointed.
He stopped the car in front of the building. Neither of you attempted to move.
“Can we talk?”
You nodded. “Here? In the car, I mean.”
“Wherever you feel comfortable.”
You both knew where things could go if you dared to invite him in. But you still did.
The elevator was thankfully empty. The space between your bodies almost disgusted you. The last time you had been in an empty elevator with him, neither of you had been able to take your hands off each other.
Turning the lights on, you apologized, “Sorry for the mess. I have a lot of things to organize still.”
You walked towards the couch and picked the box you had left there up. Something moved inside.
A hiss let you know Fatatita was inside the box. You reached in and held her between your arm and your chest.
You put the box on top of the other boxes stacked up against the wall. And motioned for Joaquín to get comfortable.
Fatatita shifted in your grasp so you slowly put her down onto the floor. The cat ran towards the kitchen.
You tried not to stare at Joaquín. The more you did, the more you wanted to bury your fingers in his curls.
“Sam told me what you did,” he quietly told you.
“It’s nothing.”
“You had to move because of me.”
“It was bound to happen,” you said simply as though it hadn’t been one of the hardest decisions you had ever had to make.
He looked down. You hoped he was thinking the same thing you were. ’It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.’
“I’m sorry for not telling you who my dad was.”
“I’m not going to say it didn’t hurt, or that I get why you did it,” he admitted, “but I hope you know I would have dropped everything to help you find him.”
“I know,” you assured him quickly. “That’s why I never said yes, it wouldn’t have been fair.”
“What do you mean?”
“You wanted to join The Air Force more than anything. Your eyes would lit up when you talked about it and I didn’t have the heart to pull you away from your dream.” You let out a small sigh, perfectly picturing him, so hopeful and excited. “And I wanted to, I really did, but you deserved better.”
“But you were part of that dream.”
“You know how much I’ve always hated not having a home, but you still wanted me to move every few years.” It was never going to work, no matter how desperately you wanted it to.
“So I wasn’t enough?” He masochistically peered up.
“Wha— who said that? Why are you putting words in my mouth?”
“Because you would have moved every few years with me. I was only going to leave when deployed. I had all of it planned. We would get married eventually so you’d live with me at the base and...” he trailed off.
Whether he was trying to spare your feelings or to find the right words was irrelevant. You stayed silent, in part because you didn’t know what to do but mostly because you knew him well and were sure he wanted to finish his comment.
“I thought waiting for you was proof that I was serious about us. I asked you to move with me. WITH me, not for me.”
You sat down too. You didn’t need him to remind you or to make emphasis on his words — you had understood what he wanted from the beginning; you wanted the same for the most part, but not like that.
Compromising would’ve been good. Healthy. You wouldn’t be in this mess now. But comprising entailed a specific kind of vulnerability you were afraid you would never recover from.
And you lost Joaquín because of that.
“I was scared and I already said sorry. What else do you want me to do?”
He twisted to face you. “Don’t get defensive, we’re just talking.”
“I just...” You wanted to say a lot of things. If you had drunk alcohol you would’ve let them all out at once and finally, the nuisance from the pills was paying off. “I don’t want you to hate me. That’s all.”
“You can’t possibly think I hate you.”
You shrugged. “I sorta resented you for a while.”
“How did you get over it?”
Lying would have been so easy, but you couldn’t when he was implying you had gotten over him. There had been other people in your life after him and you had ruined those relationships too, but none of them hurt like this.
“I didn’t.”
He sat there, unmoving as he stared at you as if he was waiting for you to tell him it was a joke.
“Fuck,” he murmured.
“Please don’t make it awkward,” you begged him. “We can forget this conversation happened. You will go back to Vegas and I will stay here, it’s okay.”
Everything would be okay. This was just the closure your therapist said you needed.
Joaquín broke it to you, “I live here.”
Speechless, you felt your blood drop to your feet. Deep breaths and counting to ten were as effective as ever and at the same time didn’t cut it. Only you had this luck.
“Sam didn’t tell you I’m Falcon now?”
Now Sam’s and Bucky’s attitude made complete sense.
“He forgot that small detail.” As you recovered your ability to speak, you stressed, “The offer stands. We can forget this conversation happened.”
“I don’t want to forget about it.”
“We can’t do this, Joaquín. Not again — last time was hard enough.”
He enthusiastically nodded. “But I’m not going anywhere this time.” Seeing your apprehension, he added, “As much as I want to, I’m not asking you to immediately get back with me.”
“What are you asking for, then?”
“Another chance? A fresh start? I don’t know. I miss you and I want to be with you, but I’m not going to force you.”
“It’s not that you would be forcing me,” you clarified, “I miss you too, a lot. And the excuses I could give you are minimal, maybe a little petty...” He huffed a laugh. You continued, finally explaining yourself, “I’m scared we won’t really get past what happened.”
Joaquín placed his warm hand on your shoulder. “I’ve already forgiven you.”
You rested your hands on his shoulders, blinking rapidly. Sliding your hands to his back, you hugged him.
His free arm snaked your waist. Joaquín hid his face in your neck, moving his hand to the back of your head.
He shifted to kneel on the couch, making you lightly part from him. Your eyes met and you pulled him closer again before he would say anything.
Joaquín bit his bottom lip. “Can I kiss you?”
You kissed him first, tired of pretending you hadn’t been waiting for this since the day he left.
He softly kissed you back, bringing a hand to your face as he cupped your cheek. You relished in his warmth and gentleness, leaning into his touch and consequently kissing him harder.
Removing his arm from around you, he placed his hand on your belly and lightly pushed you onto your back. You ended up in an awkward position, yet you couldn’t bring yourself to care.
He hovered over you, fingers caressing your sides as he continued kissing you. You tangled your fingers in his curls as he deepened the kiss.
You rendered each other breathless, touch growing looser as both of you panted.
“So much for not rushing in,” you breathlessly joked against his mouth.
“Am I making you feel uncomfortable?” he panted.
“No, don’t worry.”
He hummed, leaving a small kiss on your jaw before dragging his lips to your neck.
“Although...” He immediately stopped. You chuckled. “My back hurts.”
Joaquín moved off you, standing up and offering his hand to you to help you sit up.
Instead, you stood up altogether and took his hand. He didn’t say no, he let you take him to your room.
You sat on the bed, tugging on his hand.
“Come here,” you needily said.
Joaquín happily complied, leaning in to kiss you again.
When you woke up the next morning, he was sound asleep next to you.

Delicate. — Part 1.
word count: 2.6k
a/n: Here we are fam, i gotta be honest with y’all, this is heavily inspired in the fact that i watched Miss Americana twice this month, what resulted in me going through my taylor swfit phase again. Pls bare with me, i haven’t written anything like this before.
catch up here!
They said artists become what they are because deep down they are as insecure if not more than normal people. Because they craved constant validation in what they do.
At least it was the case for Y/n.
A girl who has built an entire system around being accepted by the public, someone who their major source of happiness is provided by strangers all around the world. When you are living from the approval of strangers and that is where you drive all your joy and fulfillment, one bad thing can cause everything to go down. Y/n has spent her whole life trying to please the world so they would like her, so what she has achieved over the years would last.
When the world turned their back on her, Y/n had no choice but to disappear, because she thought that was what everyone wanted. Even then, she made her choices around what she thought would make them happy.
Y/n knew she could not hide forever, but for now, it was a necessary evil she had to take. Deciding to take a break from everything was the healthiest decision she has ever made, shutting down her social media, getting out of the city and going back home with her family was exactly what she needed.
"Mom was sad she couldn't pick you up from the airport."
Seventeen-year-old Jensen, whose driving license was still new and fresh, was the one who picked Y/n up when her flight landed. In complete honesty, she did not like using a private plane, but she could not risk someone seeing where she was going. Jensen was good at driving, well, he has not crashed into a tree yet, so they were safe.
"She would've brought Chase and scare Pandora and Lizzie."
Jensen chuckled. "She's obsessed with him. I haven't started college yet and she's already thinking about turning my room into Chase's."
Her parents’ house was a gated property away from others since it was safer that way. Y/n would not stay there the whole time since she had her own apartment a little closer to town. Her luggage, as well as her cats, were picked up separately and taken to her home, she would go there after lunch with her family. Jensen parked next to a black range rover that belonged to their dad, meaning both of their parents were home.
Y/n threw her backpack over her shoulder as she stepped out of the car, eager to finally reunite with her family, especially her mother. She is in desperate need of a tight hug, a mug of hot chocolate and a shoulder to cry on. Y/n did not realize how mentally drained she was until she saw her mother open the front door.
"My baby!" Louise exclaimed, embracing her daughter in a tight hug. "How was the flight?"
"It was fine. I'm starving though."
They walked into the living room and Louise closed the door behind them. Y/n dropped her backpack on one of the couches and sighed in relief. “Where’s dad?” Jensen went straight to the kitchen and opened the fridge.
“Get the white wine.” Y/n told him.
“It’s too early to drink that.” Louise took the bottle from Jensen’s hands and put it back in the fridge. “Dad’s outside. We bought some roses that will look beautiful by the pool.”
“You’re buying a lot of plants lately.” Y/n pointed a big vase full of daisies, her mom’s favorites, on the kitchen’s island.
“I like supporting local business.” She shrugged.
“That and she’s obsessed with the owner of the flower shop.” Jensen chuckled, cracking open a water bottle.
“Hey! That’s not true.”
“Mom, you there like… every day. Who needs new flowers every day?”
“Shush.” The elder woman faked offense then gigged. “Handsome young man, he is. I’ll take you tomorrow.” She turned to Y/n.
“Oh, no, mom. I’m going to lock myself in my apartment and try to write.” She said, making Louise scoff. “I’m serious!”
“I know you are. But living like a hermit is not going to do you any good.”
“I agree, sis.”
Y/n rolled her eyes, knowing they were right as always but did not want to admit it. The truth was, she wanted to write some songs, so badly, but could not find the right words. She was hoping to get some peace and quiet to get her ideas and emotions in order again. Before any of them could say anything else, David entered the kitchen while taking off his gardening gloves and smiled widely when he spotted Y/n.
“And who do we have here?”
“Hi, dad.” Y/n smiled at him brightly before wrapping her arms around her dad, who hugged her back just as tight.
“Good to have you home, darling.”
The family of four sat on the kitchen island and started to catch up. Jensen talked about his different college options and how he was considering getting a summer job this year. Louise kept talking about how nice the owner of this flower shop was, making emphasis on how he was also single. Y/n didn’t know what she was trying to do, but she didn’t pay much attention either.
Overall it was nice for Y/n to get out of her head for a little bit, and her family was always a great help for that. She knew she still had a lot to deal with, and she would probably get a call from her publicist and a lot of other people soon, but for now, she just wanted to think about anything else that wasn't the whole world hating on her.
"How are you doing, Y/n? Be honest." Her mom asked after they stayed alone in the kitchen.
"Been better." She sighed. "I don't want to think about it, mom."
"You have to talk to someone, sweetie. I know your team cares for you and is trying to handle the situation, but you can still talk to me."
"I know, thank you. I'm just trying to figure it what I'm going to do."
Louise sighed. "You sure you don't want to stay here? You have your room and everything."
"Thanks for the offer, mom. But I sort of want to be on my own." She said. "But I'll come for lunch every day, I promise."
Although Louise wasn't convinced by her daughter's words, she chose to not push it. She knew Y/n had her own ways to express her feelings, and she'd talk whenever she felt like it. So she let her go, making her promise she'd come to visit soon.
"Do you need a ride? I'm going to town anyway." Jensen offered, taking the keys of his car from the little plate they kept on the table beside the front door.
"Yes, please."
The drive to her apartment wasn't a long one, and in less than ten minutes she was opening her front door and being greeted by her two beautiful cats rubbing themselves on her legs. Y/n sighed, thinking about how much she needed to unpack now that she was here. The truth was, she didn't know for how long she'd be staying here, but she figured it'd be a long time so she packed a lot. Now she kind of regretted it because she would probably be in her pajamas all day anyway.
After cleaning Pandora and Lizzie's sandbox, Y/n decided to grab an acoustic guitar and try to come up with some melodies. She wasn't quite sure about any lyrics yet, but it was always good to have a little something to start a song.
She went from playing the guitar to play the piano, hoping she'd get more inspirations somewhere. But she had nothing. Not even one decent note. She was empty.
"Don't pretend is... mhmm. Think about the... No." She groaned and slammed the palm of her hands on the keyboard, growing frustrated. Why all of a sudden she couldn't even rhyme? Maybe she needed a break, or perhaps she was tired from her flight and tomorrow she'd be able to write something.
//
Turns out her writer's block was here to stay. A week has passed since her arrival and Y/n hasn't been able to finish one single song. Everything she started ended up being erased or in the middle of her living room after the ripped the page off her journal.
"I told you, you shouldn't hurry. Inspiration will come eventually, it always does."
"I guess. I just have nothing else to do other than play scrabble with you and write songs, or at least try to."
"Let me take out then." Louise started and Y/n shakes her head. "C'mon, let's eat somewhere or buy groceries and I'll cock at your place." Y/n looked at her mom and realized she wouldn't stop until she accepted, so Y/n offered Louise a nod. "Marvelous. There's this little café that I absolutely love. You'll love the owner."
"What is it with you and the owners of local shops?"
"They're my friends. Oh! We could drop by Blossom House. You could use some flowers around your house so it would look like somebody actually lives there."
"Stop dragging me, woman."
Louise drove them to this café called Furry Cakes, which turned out to be a cat café. Y/n obviously lost it as soon as they walked in, and nearly cried when she saw all the kittens, and absolutely shed a tear when the girl behind the register said every kitty except for one named Chaster was up for adoption. She felt like a little girl all over again when her mom told her she couldn't take every single kitty home.
Y/n was wearing a hoodie that was twice her size, plus some big sunglasses she refused to take off, even inside of the café. She was praying she wouldn't get recognized as she knew people were dying for a picture of her, see how she was after the entire world canceled her.
"We'll leave the car parked here, the flower shop is just around the corner." Louise pulled from Y/n's hand to make her walk faster. There weren't a lot of people on the streets and she was grateful for that, she hasn't gotten a proper walk in what felt like ages.
They stopped outside a modern-looking building with a big, bright sign that read 'The Blossom House'. It was simple yet cute. The pair stepped in and a little bell ringed. Y/n looked around, admiring how everything looked like it was straight out of a fairytale. There were little pots hanging from the ceiling and she looked up, she saw the ceiling was pure glass, which made the whole place brighter. Flowers weren't really her thing as she could barely keep them alive, but seeing this amount of flowers all in the same place... made her somewhat happy and warm inside.
She was so deep in thought she didn't even realize her mom left her and was nowhere to be found. It doesn't look like it from outside, but the shop was actually big and very spacious. It was also empty right now, not even an employee was around, so she decided to have a look on her own. It looked like they had all kinds of flowers in here, which made her even more excited because that meant they had-
"Azaleas? They're also my favorites." A deep voice interrupted her thoughts. She jumped on her place as she wasn't expecting it, which made the person behind her chuckle. "I didn't mean to scare you, sorry."
"It's okay..." She turned around and it was fair to say that was she saw stunned her right away.
In front of her, a gorgeous looking man was standing there with a bright smile on his face. She noticed the two dimples poking at each side of his face, making his smile even more beautiful. His emerald green eyes were the greenest eyes she has ever seen in her life, she believed. He had crinkles by his eyes due to his smile being wide. But to her, the icing of the cake was the beautiful mop of chocolate curls he had on the top of his head. She suddenly felt the insane urge to run her hands through it just to see if they were as soft as they looked.
"Harry, darling!" Louise appeared out of nowhere and wrapped her arms around the man, who only chuckled while reciprocating the greeting.
"Hello, Louise. What's it gonna be today? Tulips? More daisies?" Oh God, he's British. Y/n thought to herself.
"Gosh, you know me so well. I'm actually here just to look around, I see you found my daughter though." She smirked.
"I surely did. I'm Harry, nice to meet you, love." He offered her a hand for her to shake.
Y/n was a little surprised by the pet name but took his hand nonetheless. "I'm Y/n, nice to meet you too."
"I want her to get some plants for her house." Louise spoke again.
"Well, you're in the right place then." He said. "Do you want them for your garden?"
"No, uhm... I don't have one. I live in an apartment."
"Personally, my favorite to keep indoors are Begonias." Harry guided the two women to a different section of the flower shop and pointed to some pretty ones in pink color. "But I also enjoy Daylilies, although they're a little harder to maintain."
"Yeah, maybe not those then. I'm not very good at keeping plants alive."
"She killed a cactus once." Louise mentioned.
"No way."
"I didn't know they'd drown if I watered them more than once a week!" Y/n defended herself.
"Amateur mistake." He joked.
The truth was Y/n was too busy to have a garden, she was always traveling and didn't stay too long in one place so even if she tries to have one, it'd be dead by the end of the month.
"What plants are cat friendly? I have two at home."
"Bromeliads are cat friendly, they're easy to maintain too."
They looked around for a little bit. Harry said a fun fact about every type of flower Y/n pointed out, never failing to make her laugh. The funny thing was, it didn't look like Harry knew who she was. Either he hasn't recognized her, or he didn't know about her. Which by the way, not to be a narcissist, would be highly unlikely.
She ended up taking a couple of new plants home, starting to grow excited about them. It was true, her apartment could use a little more life to it, and now she was sure her new plants would do that for her. Harry was wrapping everything for them while he stood behind the counter.
"Oh, here. This one's on the house." Harry handed her a pot with some beautiful blue Azaleas. She took them with a growing blush on her face, a blush that went deeper when their hands brushed with each other. "Try to not kill them though." He teased.
Y/n rolled her eyes as her mom chuckled behind her. "I'll report their aliveness back to you, you'll see."
"You better. Have a nice day, ladies. I'm guessing I'll see you around, Y/n?"
"Sure, I'm uh... I'm living here right now."
Harry smiled at them one last time before they exited the shop. After the door closed behind them, Louise turned to Y/n. "He likes you."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"What do you say if we invite him for dinner sometime?"
"Like, at your house?" She asked surprised.
"Yeah, why not?"
"I have to keep a low profile, mother. For all I know he could be tweeting about I just exited his shop."
"Don't let the paranoia ruin the possibility of forming new friendships... or more." Louise sent her a wink.
"Okay, that's enough."
Y/n brushed her off, trying not to think much about it. A new friendship sounded impossible at this point of her life, let alone pursuing a new relationship with someone. She had made up her mind, she was better off being alone.

Gabriel Agreste: Interesting Villain, Horrible Character (400 Follower Special)
I'm honestly surprised more people didn't want me to talk about Gabriel, especially with how often I rag on how horrible of a person he is. But, three character analysis posts later, and we're going to talk about why the main villain of Miraculous Ladybug is a real letdown.
Gabriel Needs to give the Whining a Rest
The interesting thing is one of the few things I actually liked in Season 3 was Hawkmoth. His plans actually made sense (for the most part), and by playing the long game, he managed to turn Chloe against Ladybug and deprived her of several key allies. Granted, Season 4 immediately undid the latter, but I was still impressed by his strategy.
Generally, one of the better aspects of Gabriel as a character was just how over the top he was as Hawkmoth. Keith Silverstein is clearly giving it his all with his performance, and he is just so enjoyable to watch as a cartoonish supervillain.
And therein lies the first major problem with Gabriel as a character. While he is fun to watch as a simple supervillain, the show tries to give him more depth and unintentionally makes him worse.
In Season 2, when it was revealed that Gabriel was Hawkmoth, many fans speculated on what he needed the Miraculous for, until the Queen Bee Trilogy showed it was to save his possibly dead wife, Emilie. The idea of that is so the show can give more depth to its main villain, and I think it's an interesting idea in concept. After all, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
The problem is just how radically different Gabriel is normally compared to how he is as Hawkmoth. He always goes on about how he's “doing this for Emilie”, but it's hard to really sympathize with him when you consider he constantly gives evil monologues and evil laughs, really getting into the supervillain role. And let's not forget all of the “I'm going to wear Ladybug's skin as a suit” faces he loves to make.
Clearly this man is the picture of mental stability.
Gabriel's motivation for being Hawkmoth when compared to what he actually does as Hawkmoth is shady enough, but the thing is that the writers clearly want the audience to at least feel a little bad for him. They want to make the audience sympathize with him despite the way he acts with or without the mask. Without Miraculous Ladybug, he is routinely putting innocent lives in danger and never once shows regret for his actions. All he talks about is how “he's doing this for Emilie”, or that “he'll get their Miraculous soon”. There's no real reason to feel bad for him other than “because the script says so”.
Let's compare Gabriel to Malcolm Merlyn from Arrow. His big plan in the first season of the show is to create a machine that will cause an earthquake to destroy a crime-infested portion of Starling City, claiming to be trying to help everyone, but it's clear he is only doing it out of revenge for his wife getting killed by a criminal from that part of the city. In addition, throughout that season and future seasons, he always makes sure his plans lead to him benefiting in some way, showing he isn't just some noble man trying to achieve his goals with a less than noble method.
If we got some moments that showed that what Gabriel was doing was selfish, it would make him a more complex villain. But we don't get anything like that. What do we get instead? Well...
I Could Really Care Less About Emilie Agreste
We have known Gabriel's motivation has been to save his wife for a little over two years at this point, but at the same time, it's hard to believe that motivation because of how underdeveloped Emilie is as a character.
There have been a total of two lines in the entirety of the show that explain what happened to Emilie, and they're both vague as hell. One of them was from “Feast” that implied Emilie used the broken Peacock Miraculous.
Adrien: My mom used to have dizzy spells… just like Nathalie.
And the other that outright tells the audience what's happening to her in a clip show that most people will skip.
Nathalie: As I've watched Emilie falling deeper into an endless sleep, my sadness for her has deepened, too
That is literally all we get for an explanation, and nothing else. We have no idea of what she's like as a person or what her relationship with her family was like other than Gabriel and Adrien saying they miss her. Other than the way the narrative says she's important to Gabriel and Adrien, we don't really have a reason to care about her as a character. There have also been some lines that imply she went along with Gabriel's questionable parenting techniques, like how he was apparently only homeschooled as a kid (Origins) and never had a birthday party growing up (The Bubbler), so how do we even know if she's a good person? In fact, why not set up this question as a mystery to make the audience wonder if Gabriel has another reason to bring Emilie back?
It ultimately turns Emilie into a plot device and not a character that Gabriel and Adrien only bring up to make the audience feel bad for them, and meant to justify Gabriel's actions by saying that he's “doing this for his family”.
But hey, if he's doing this all for his family, surely Gabriel's redeeming traits come from his relationship with Adrien, right? Right?
As a Parent, Gabriel is Far From the Best
I've talked about this briefly before, but parenting in Miraculous Ladybug is written in such a black and white way, even by the standards of this show. Parents are portrayed in one of two ways. They're either amazing people who love and support their children unconditionally, or they're awful people who treat their own children like trash. And much like a lot of things in this show, there are times where the latter is treated like the former.
There are so many times where the narrative insists on making you see Gabriel as a troubled, but wellmeaning person who tries his best to be a good parent to Adrien, but it is far from the truth.
I'm not going to beat around the bush. Gabriel is a terrible parent. Like, he is awful at being a parent in so many ways, even before you find out he's Hawkmoth. In his first appearance, “The Bubbler”, he delegates getting Adrien a birthday present to Nathalie, his assistant. He literally can't be bothered to take time out of his schedule to get his own son a present for his birthday. And as the show goes on, he becomes more controlling and forbids Adrien from going out with his friends in other episodes (Captain Hardrock, Silencer). While this could be used to show Gabriel getting worse, it's never acknowledged in-universe, with Adrien continually defending his father essentially keeping him on house arrest.
“But IOTA!” You might say. “Gabriel has made efforts to bond with his son in some episodes.” While that might be true, most of those come right after his Akumas have almost gotten Adrien killed. He only hugged Adrien and made an attempt to learn more about him after Simon Says invaded their home, he only decided to watch that movie Emilie was in with Adrien after Gorizilla nearly dropped him off a building, and he only hugged Adrien again in public after he was turned into a gold statue by Style Queen.
In fact, let's talk about how Gabriel acts in the Queen Bee Trilogy. He actually decides to quit being Hawkmoth, but it's not because he realizes all the damage he's caused. Instead, he gave up because his “magnum opus”, a stronger than usual Akuma that only got the advantage on Ladybug ironically because of dumb luck, failed. Sure, he says he can't keep putting his son in danger, but he rarely ever acknowledges that he does so in the first place. When Riposte wanted to fight Adrien, Hawkmoth did nothing to stop her other than giving her a stern warning earlier on and nothing else. Where was this attitude earlier?
Hell, even then, he immediately goes back to being Hawkmoth as soon as he sees an opportunity, not even a day after his “mAgNuM oPuS” blew up in his face (because I guess Scarletmoth was just Plan B). If he made such a big deal about caring for his son, why didn't he try harder to spend time with him? Has he ever had doubts about what he's doing before? If Chloe didn't show up as Queen Bee, was he going to follow through on his promise and try to be a better father to Adrien instead of trying to get Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculous?
And yeah, the whole irony is that Gabriel is doing this for his family when he is unknowingly fighting his own son, which could lead to some interesting drama if done right. The idea of how Gabriel would react to his son being Cat Noir could really lead to some internal struggles for him to go through. But then we got “Cat Blanc”, which shows just how terrible of a character Gabriel is.
In an alternate timeline where he found out his son was Cat Noir, what does Gabriel do? Does he try to steal Adrien's Miraculous while he's sleeping? Does he reconsider his actions or realize he was endangering Adrien's life?
NOPE! He just decides to akumatize him all while emotionally tormenting him, before causing the end of the world.
This is honestly one of the most appalling things I've ever seen in any TV show, because it's basically an abusive father ordering his son to listen to him all while referencing his (kind of) dead mother to back up his point. And rather than use this to show how despicable Gabriel is, the episode decides to blame Marinette for this happening. Yes, according to the show, her present to Adrien caused several events to happen which caused Cat Blanc, but this logic makes no sense. It's like blaming the JFK assassination on the man who sold a gun to Lee Harvey Oswald, instead of, you know, Lee Harvey Oswald.
Not only was this episode yet another excuse to blame Marinette for something that wasn't her fault, it leads into the biggest problem I have with Gabriel as a character.
Sympathize with Gabriel? Surely, You Jest
After everything I've gone over regarding Gabriel as a character, after all the awful things I've talked about, are you really surprised that I don't feel bad for him at all?
Gabriel is just an awful character and a despicable human being, but the show just keeps wanting me to feel bad for him. It's just so hard to when you consider everything he's done has made him anything but sympathetic. I'm just saying, it's kind of hard to feel bad for someone who tries to start World War III with the only justification being “i'M dOiNg It FoR mY fAmIlY”, especially when he treats his family like crap.
The writers go out of their way to show how horrible Gabriel is as Hawkmoth/Shadowmoth, but they think because they throw in a few moments where he looks conflicted, we'll immediately feel bad for him. What makes so many people interested in seeing Chloe become a better person is that they can tell she's the victim of a troubled upbringing, and know that because she's only a teenager, she still has room to grow as a person, represented by having more honest moments of vulnerability. Gabriel is a grown man who once caused the apocalypse because of how terrible of a parent he is, and has even fewer sympathetic moments than Chloe does. Which one of these two is supposedly irredeemable? The answer may surprise you.
But the frustrating thing is that this kind of villain could have worked. Instead of making him this mustache-twirling psychopath, show how much Gabriel regrets what he has to do, but keeps pushing onward despite all the lives he's risking if it means that he can save his wife. Instead of making Gabriel like Lex Luthor, make him like Mr. Freeze, who is basic a better written version of him.
youtube
But as it stands, there's a good reason why Gabriel gets little to no respect as a character in the Miraculous Ladybug fandom, as a villain, or as a father.

Past [Part 2] (Obsession)
A/N: Some chapters will be named with either “Past,” “Present,” or “Future,” then their numbered part coming right after it. This is to confuse you less when flashbacks or anything happens. As you have probably noticed, it says “Past” for Part 2. This is going back near when Tom and her just met. Thank you for reading! <3

Tom Riddle's Moodboard
Main Character's Moodboard
~////////////////𓆙////////////////~
1940 - 3rd year
“Potions is not that bad, I swear. You just have to be good at measuring.”
At the table, my friends and I are discussing our classes this year. Potions being one of my favorite topics. Devyn absolutely loathes that certain class. We have to drag her there to make sure she doesn’t skip. Poor girl tries her best to not mess up but the cauldron always ends up blowing up. I even watched her do every step once, never missing a beat. The potion still ended up failing, even though she did everything correctly. She gave up after a while, who wouldn’t. I help her do extra assignments for extra credit to keep her grade up. She also studies with me to make sure she can memorize everything and pass her tests. Amelia is pretty good at the class, she’s luckily paired with Devyn most of the time. Carrying the potion to success, with a little bit of my secret help. It’s not cheating, it’s using your resources.
I’m resources.
“Potions is not that bad,” Devyn mocks me. “If it weren’t for you two I would have gone insane in that stupid class.”
Amelia just laughs at her while eating her hash browns on the plate. She reaches her hand out to take some more eggs.
“You were able to do it before. Not the way you were supposed to, but it worked,” Amelia says.
“Exactly, just start doing it your way at this point. I don’t think Slughorn will care how it’s done, just how it comes out.”
Devyn nods her head and points at me with a fork. Her mouth full of food so she settles for that response. My plate doesn’t have much other than some bacon and fruit. I’m not usually a breakfast eater. I get my appetite at lunch and dinner time. It’s just too early for a bunch of food smells, the smells make me kind of nauseous. I’ll eat though, enough to hold me off till lunch.
The chatter in the lunchroom rises by the minute. Everyone refilling themselves before their busy day. All energy levels rising while everyone wakes up from their groggy morning mood. While my friends finish eating we continue to talk about our classes and share the schedules for this year. Most classes we had were the same except for our electives. I tried taking as many electives as possible. My family back home never really did magic. I actually came a year and a half late since my family wanted me to have a normal school experience. I learned to do everything without the use of magic, the only thing my mom taught me was the floo network, creatures, and plants. I would often accompany her to Diagon Alley when she shops. I got an Owl for my 10th birthday. A cat would have been amazing if I wasn’t allergic to it. My owl is a brown and white-furred barn owl. Don’t ask me why I named it Bartholomew. I was ten okay, give me a break. Speaking of the floo network, my mom had to chase me through it quite often because I kept teleporting everywhere. I once ran into the Ministry of Magic’s building and got lost. They had to take me home to my parents. Their faces told me everything I needed to know about the punishment waiting for me.
Halfway through the second year is when I came to Hogwarts, a second letter coming that year asking my parents to let me learn more there. So when they finally let me attend, everything was pretty new to me. My mother was the magic one in the family. Her grandmother, my great-grandmother, before her had the magic gene. Going to school was the same experience as going from a muggle-borns perspective. The difference is, I knew more about its existence. I would look at yearbooks my mom had from when she went here. She earned a lot of titles, all the achievements being recorded down. I always wondered why she never wanted me to come here. Did something happen to me, to her? I’m guessing she just wanted a normal life with dad. He has always supported her through everything. A love, a bond like that is hard to come by. He would also learn about magic right next to me. At least, the stuff my mom allowed to let us know.
That’s why I want to learn as much as I can, of what’s available. Why learn math in the muggle world when I could be learning divination. Spells of all types, potions for everything of inconvenience. My chores could be completed with just a flick of my wand. I’ve lately been learning wandless magic, on my own. Albus has helped by providing me with material to study that type of magic. The only thing I’ve managed so far is a spark coming from the tips of my fingertips. Sparking hope that I could actually, maybe, achieve that level. Now I won't get my hopes up, but that can lead me to a certain advantage in dueling. That being one of my weakest skills. Always panicking, saying any spells that pop up in my mind, and making random movements coming from my wand. Often confusing who I’m up against, although they recover from that confusion fairly quickly.
Riddle, met him once. One too many if you would ask me. I dissuade ever wanting to speak to him. Arrogance and pride flow through his tongue like second nature. I do take pride in succeeding above him in 3 classes. He is 2 classes above me but, that’s not the point. I do admit, he’s attractive. Only a little though, how else would he charm his way through the professors and students.
“Alright, I’m ready to go. You guys done?”
“Yeah,” I say. Devyn and I start leaving our seats and heading towards the huge doors.
Amelia hurried from her seat, a few steps behind since she took some fruit with her to eat on the way. More and more students also started making their way towards the first period. Not wanting to be blamed for the loss of house points. This system causes so many fights, everyone’s competitive side getting the best of their common sense. I would be lying if I said it didn’t get the best of me before. Amelia being her usual bubbly self skips backward while chatting with us. Before we could warn her to stop, she pushes someone ahead of her. Both falling down, hitting the floor. She spins her head extremely quickly, her hair sticking in her mouth from the force of the wind.
“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention,” she explains. Quickly trying to digest her situation. I make my way towards her and pull her up. I fix her robe and dust off any dirt on the cloth from the floor.
“Clearly idiot, can you not use those bug eyes of yours to see?”
Devyn and I make eye contact. We understand that there are witnesses here, and one of them is bound to snitch on us if we fight. A huge scene would probably make Amelia feel even more embarrassed as well. Instead, I guided Amelia by her back. We continue on to class while I comfort her. Devyn is staying back to “talk” to the guy. Lestrange is in for it now, any poor soul would be when in the fiery path of her anger.
Devyn’s loud yells could still be slightly heard when entering the potions classroom. First class of the year, and day. On Slughorn’s table, I can see a vial with the wideye potion contained inside. I set Devyn’s textbook on her station, turning to the page that contains information on the potion. Hoping to save her confusion and time.
“Welcome, welcome! Nice to see some old faces, and new ones,” he says with the biggest grin on his face. “Today we’ll be learning about the Wideye potion. Can anyone tell me what this potion does?”
I quickly raise my hand, rather eager. I did some reading about a lot of potions during the summer. Trying to get a headstart on my studies. This potion being one of them. Only 3 students raised their hand, one of them being me. The other, well, Riddle.
“Yes, go ahead and answer,” the professor looks my way.
I smile, “The wideye potion prevents the person consuming the liquid the ability to fall asleep. Which is often used in the medical field to wake someone from a sleep caused by a blunt force or drug.”
“Precisely! 10 points.”
I look back rather smugly at Riddle, rather happy I got chosen instead of him. I know, he could have easily answered that too. I’ll let myself bask in the small achievement for now. 30 minutes of class is just spent writing down notes, preparing us for the potion we will make. Note-taking is my favorite, especially the little doodles I get to make. We use a feather instead of the regular pen. I found it rather amusing and liked the certain feeling of writing with it. The dipping noise that the point of the feather makes when hitting the liquid ink is a very profound sound. No real writer’s bump forming on my fingers.
“That’s enough writing, I need you all to prepare your cauldron, gather the materials you need, and start your potion. If done correctly, tomorrow when we add the finishing touches and check on it the potion should be a blue/green color,” Slughorn comments. “You have 10 minutes to study your notes, then the rest of the class to make your potion. No looking back at your notes after those ten minutes.”
After scanning my notes, I stand up and walk towards the ingredients on the shelves. If I remember correctly my potion requires snake fangs, standard ingredient, and wolfsbane. I gather all that in my hand and set it down near my cauldron. Before I start, I take a moment. I’m missing something, I’m sure there was another ingredient.
Wolfsbane, check.
Snake fangs, six of them.
I have the measures of Standard ingredient.
There’s one more, I try to look around the room. Then I remember that we get an automatic failing grade if caught cheating. There’s no way I’ll let my grade drop like that. Over something so small and inconvenient too. Making my way to the shelves, I scan over the ingredients over and over again. Trying to see if any of the names pop out to me.
No.
Definitely not.
That’s an ingredient?
I don’t even want to know how that one was obtained.
This one, of course it’s this one. I even remember putting a star next to the name in my notebook. Dried Billwig stings, I believe six of them were needed. All that time wasted. Hurrying to my seat I get to work. The time goes by quickly, all that could be heard was the sizzling and whooshing of our potions. I almost knocked down my vials a couple of times. Someone actually did, their time spent on cleaning the glass off the floor. After heating the first three ingredients, I crush them together in the mortar. Then stir clockwise from what I recall, three times specifically. Finally, I wave my wand over then leave it to brew.
Just in time from the looks of it. I glance at Devyn to see how it went for her, and she looks pretty proud of herself. I take that as a blessing that it didn’t blow up this time of round. I’m guessing she took our advice and did it her own way.
A student raises his hand, “May we leave?”
“Oh yes yes, go ahead. No assignments for the first day, only the potion you made in class.”
Before I leave the classroom I examine Riddle’s station. He already left the room. His potion looks similar to how mine turned out, his workspace thoroughly cleaned. Everything used properly placed back to where it should be. Perfectly spotless, not a single speck of dust in sight. All done without magic too, surprising for someone born into the wizarding world. When I mentioned that I met him once, it wasn’t much of anything. The only way I know how he really acts is through other people. Much admire his intelligence and strong will. Others are jealous of the potential he holds for the future.
Girls are already trying to slip love potions into his drinks. I would feel bad if he wasn’t so rude to them. Only just before touching the disrespectful line. He almost drank one of their attempts before. Wouldn’t want to imagine how that turned out. Tom riddle, in love. That man probably doesn’t know the feeling of happiness, let alone love. I feel bad for his future girlfriend, she’s going to have to deal with a handful of baggage.
~////////////////𓆙////////////////~
“How much do you want to bet Nott will demolish him?” A Gryffindor girl to my left whispers.
Nott, part of Riddle’s group from what I’ve seen. They all eat lunch together and talk to one another so it’s a reasonable guess. Very talented duellist, one of the bests here.
“I hate to admit it, but he’ll definitely win this. I’ll still have hope for the other guy though,” I whisper back trying not to sound mean.
Nott and the other Slytherin boy are up right now. It’s a courtesy for the audience to stay quiet until someone casts the first attack or defense. From then on all you will hear is shouting of encouragement and the opposite. Nott’s eyes are focused, zoning in on the opponent before him. His wand is steady, mouth slightly parted to breathe through better. Whole-body alert and tense waiting for something. From what I'm getting, I believe he’s waiting for the Slytherin boy to go first. Nott casts spells quickly and thinks them through decently. Sometimes you're not able to create a counter-spell quick enough to defend yourself against him.
Riddle’s group and himself are near the corner of the platform. All seemingly analyzing every breath he inhales and exhales. I finally hear the whoosh of a wand and a whiz of light fly past the platform. The glow from the spell lighting our faces for a millisecond. Nott quickly counters that spell and moves to cast his own. Magic flies across the platform, all of our eyes going back and forth like a ping-pong match. The Slytherin boy starts breaking a sweat. He’s only been able to get a couple of offensive spells in there, most of his plays spent throwing off Nott’s. If he doesn’t turn the battle soon, the outcome will become very clear.
It is a little less exciting since we only know a handful of spells. So whatever you know from your own studies you use in these duels. When we move up the years the class will become more serious and dangerous. Right now it’s just to teach us how to counter and cast quickly. The proper etiquette and movement. You use spells that you know, they aren’t supposed to harm someone. Either stun them, make them fly back, or disarm. Most of those spells require a little of a higher level, most of us not even knowing of its existence yet. So what’s mostly cast between competitors is a basic spell to exert force. That force should be aimed for the legs, or the wand to disarm that way. The way someone can win here is to make their knees or hands touch the floor, or disarm their wand. As I mentioned, it will get more intense as time goes by. We're only just starting 3rd year right now, a lot more charms will be learned later on.
I shake my head to get rid of any lingering thoughts. My attention goes right back to the duel taking place in front of me. Nott quickly aims a spell at the knees and manages to bring the other boy to his knees.
“Mr. Nott wins this duel! Please step off the platform, we will evaluate your performance.”
During the practice duels today, you watch it, think of ways to help the person improve, and point out things they might have done wrong. At the end, the professor picks people raising their hands to allow them to give their feedback. Participating is part of the grade you get in here. I personally prefer giving feedback then dueling. I’m not the best at casting, I do give out good defense spells though. That should mean something, I hope.
“Let’s start with Nott, does anyone have feedback for him?”
A couple of people spread apart raised their hands. One by one they all ask questions and give feedback. They mention his feet and posture when he stands. Arms fully stretched out where it would have been more flexible to bend it slightly. When he casts he shouldn’t be walking backward. They shortly switch to the other boy’s questions and feedback. The way he never gave himself the opening to cast an offensive spell often. He would move around his area a lot. Almost slipping off the stage during one of those movements. Tom and his group privately discussed with one another. They’re probably giving Nott their own feedback and suggestions privately.
“Now, Riddle I want you to come up and…,” he scans the room for another student. After some time he points his finger at me. “You.”
I could have had a smooth sailing class. I was so close to not having to go up there. My hands start sweating a bit, my anxiety jumbling my thoughts together. Riddle’s already up there and soon to be on his side of the platform. Taking his wand out and wandering his fingers over the design. I gulp, a big toad stuck in my throat. I wipe my hands on my robe and start up the stairs. Riddle seems as unbothered as ever. We bow, turn, then walk ten paces back. During this time I try predicting who will cast first. I don’t know him very well, I’ve also never seen him duel.
I take my dueling stance and wait for the signal to start. Hoping, praying, that I don’t embarrass myself. Slipping up is not allowed, not when going against him.

can you do 14 with alex finding out that gay marriage is legal maybe learning about other wholesome lgbt+ progress since '95
(there’s a weird glitch or something on my feed where the ask isn’t showing, so just in case, this is for @lemonwilford)
so after finishing this, I have four tabs open for formal dresses, wedding venues, and lesbian wedding aesthetics on Pinterest AND I have an article from 1993 about gay rights (started as a reference but then it got interesting so really, it’s my fourth article)
in other words I kinda get obsessed and distracted with researching and referencing for anything that I write, so, TL;DR enjoy :)
also juke is totally established in this cause I said so
14. “That’s legal now?”
-------
“Ready?”
“Ready!” the guys call back to Julie. They’re in the studio, patiently waiting for the surprise she wanted to show them. She was eager about something when she came home from school and told them she couldn’t practice on Saturday. They might’ve been bummed had she not been bouncing with excitement. Alex had smiled fondly at her; excited Julie was his favorite Julie.
She promised to show them what was happening Saturday before leaving, and now they’re eager themselves.
Julie throws open both studio doors with a type of dramatic flare that Alex can respect. She saunters in wearing a gorgeous golden dress with lace shoulders, a sweetheart neckline, and a hem stops just above her knee, matching heels clicking across the floor. Her hair bounces against her shoulders: big and curly and gorgeous, like always. She’s wearing red lipstick, and her eyeliner is sharp and precise; Alex thinks it’s called a cat eye. There’s so much lingo he still needs to catch up on.
He meets her halfway with a grin and offers his hand. “You look beautiful,” he says, spinning her in a circle. She twists on the toe of her heel, and her dress flares. There are sparkles in the intricate design across her chest that glisten under the studio lights. Alex catches her around the waist when she stumbles to a stop.
“Yeah,” Reggie agrees. “You look amazing.”
Alex joins Reggie as Luke approaches. They share a knowing smile.
“Where are you going looking so good?” he asks, arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her close.
Julie beams at him. “A wedding for one of my friends from music class. Her moms are getting married.”
Alex blinks. “Moms?”
Luke frowns. “You mean… two women?”
Like a switch, Julie’s bright demeanor falters. She pushes against Luke’s arms, frowning as she breaks away from him. “Yeah,” she answers, eyeing each of them carefully. “Are you guys… okay with that?”
Alex makes a noise—somewhere between a scoff and a snicker. Okay with that? Of course he is. But confused? Yes. Very.
Reggie nods, chewing on his lip. He’s trying not to smile—Alex can see the corners of his mouth twitching. “Yeah,” he says. “Of course we are, we just—”
“That’s legal now?” Alex blurts.
A second passes, but Julie’s eyes widen with realization. “Ninety-five,” she mutters to herself, nodding slowly. “Right.” Louder, she explains, “Yeah, gay marriage was legalized, like, five years ago. Actually, a lot’s changed since the 90s.”
Luke snickers. “No kidding.”
“Oh my gosh, wait until you see Pride in June! LA has the best celebrations.” She shifts her weight, smiling sheepishly. “Not that I have experienced any outside of here to compare, but, you know what I mean. It’s so much fun! Flynn and I went with Sarah and her moms last year—Sarah’s moms are the ones getting married today.”
Julie is looking at him more than she usually looks at Luke—and she catches herself every time, quickly averting her eyes back to him and Reggie—which is really saying something. She can’t possibly know though, right? He certainly didn’t tell her. He knows neither Luke nor Reggie told her. Is it really so obvious, or could she perhaps… actually be a witch? Was Reggie on to something?
Alex rolls his eyes; he must be having an off day or something to really consider Julie being a witch and Reggie to be right.
“… Or not,” Julie says, rocking on her heels and twisting the ring on her finger. She’s looking at him again, much less sure of herself than before. Reggie and Luke are staring too; Luke elbows him in the side and glares.
“What?” Alex whines, pushing him away. “What are you—Oh! Oh, I wasn’t—I didn’t—” He shakes his head at Julie. “I wasn’t rolling my eyes at you! I just… had a dumb idea… Anyway, I’m sorry, what did you say?”
“She said we could go with her,” Reggie explains. “To the wedding, if we want to.” He raises his eyebrows knowingly. How come everyone is so knowing toward him all of a sudden?
“You should,” Julie persists. “Sarah showed us pictures of the venue today at school. It looks gorgeous in the daylight—I can’t wait to see it tonight.”
Luke grins. “Of course we’ll go.” He chuckles at the guys. “I mean, what else do we have to do?”
So, that’s how they end up in the outdoors of Orange County. The guys ride in the back of Ray’s car—apparently, ghosts can ride in cars. Flynn doesn’t carpool with Julie; when the girls reunite, she explains how her mom decided last minute that Flynn’s hair would look better in a bun rather than her regular braids.
They pose for pictures from Ray and the wedding photographer. Then Sarah, Alex thinks—a teenage girl with fair skin and copper red hair in a neat plait against her shoulder—rushes over with the biggest grin on her face. The girls gush over their outfits, the night, the decorations, etc etc. They’re cute; Alex shares a fond smile with Luke and Reggie.
“This place is pretty,” Reggie admits, turning in a slow circle to take in the scenery. They’re in a forest, surrounded by towering pine trees, and there are lights everywhere. Streams of globe bulbs are strung up from tree to tree, creating an arch in the center where a long, white rug leads to a stage filled with golden flowers. The sun was already setting when they left Julie’s house, so by now, the reception is a warm glow in an otherwise dark forest.
“Alex,” Luke mutters, as if anyone could actually hear them, and nudges his elbow into Alex’s side, “look around dude. Most of these couples aren’t straight.”
He noticed when they first arrived that men mostly stayed with men and women mostly stayed with women, but now that Luke has pointed it out, Alex is noticing that the guests are actually couples. A couple to their left is discussing the food. One man feeds the other a bite of a sandwich and gloats when his partner admits it’s actually not bad. To their right, two women are posing in front of the wedding photographer. One is kissing the other’s cheek.
“I think this is the most…” Alex pauses, trying to both find the right word and take it all in because, really, this is a lot. It’s a good amount of a lot, of course, but… These people are openly showing off their partners. They’re happy. They’re proud of themselves. And the straight people aren’t saying anything rude? No one is cursing at them? Claiming they’ve damned themselves?
“Alex?” Reggie asks softly.
“I know a lot is different from, you know,” Alex begins, “but I think this is the biggest change I’ve seen. I mean—” He gestures wildly at the scene before them. “This is legal! This is legal. It’s accepted. They’re just—Everyone is just—themselves! They’re themselves, and it’s okay.”
“I was gonna ask how you feel about it, but—” Luke shares a laugh with Reggie— “I think I have my answer.”
“I feel…” Alex rocks on his heels, considering his answer. He chews on his lip. “You guys will probably think it’s dumb, but—”
“You know we won’t think it’s dumb,” Reggie argues immediately. Alex glances at him. He’s giving Alex this look with a raised eyebrow, like he can’t believe he would even think that. Which is valid, you know, because they’ve never been anything less than supportive of Alex. Of course they haven’t; he really lucked out in the friend department.
“I feel safe here.” He shoves his hands in his jacket pockets. “Like when I could finally leave my house to go to practice, and I knew none of you guys would judge me if I told you about a guy that I thought was cute.” He finds Julie in the crowd, chatting with the lesbian couple he saw earlier, posing for pictures—selfies—with them and laughing when the woman’s partner hid bunny ears behind her head.
Alex rubs the back of his neck. “I just… don’t think I could’ve imagined feeling safe around people who aren’t my friends.” He finally turns to Luke and Reggie, who are watching him with wide grins. Alex huffs a laugh. “Stop looking at me like that.”
Reggie chuckles. He slings an arm around Alex’s shoulders. “We’re just happy for you, man.”
“Yeah,” Luke agrees. He hums. “Can’t wait to see what the whole thing with June is about.”
“Yeah!” Reggie exclaims. “D’ya think it’s a few days? A week?”
“We can ask Julie later,” Alex suggests.
Reggie snickers. “If she doesn’t stay with Flynn.”
Luke hums. “Yeah, I’m gonna… go convince her to stay home tonight.” He pauses to squeeze Alex’s shoulder before leaving them for the dance floor.
Alex suddenly steps away from Reggie. “I, uh… I’ll be right back.”
“Where are you going?”
“I just—I want to find Willie. I want to talk to him about something.”
“You’re really going to leave me third wheeling with jukebox over there?”
Alex snorts. “Jukebox? Have they approved of that name?”
“… They don’t know about it.” Reggie pauses, then adds, “And you’re not going to tell them.”
“I promise.”
Reggie chuckles. “You better. Now go, find your boy.”
He’s at the museum, the first place Alex looks. He’s just leaving actually—as soon as Alex arrives at the building, Willie is phasing through the door, about to skate down the street.
“Willie!” Alex calls.
Willie steps off his board. He turns to him, and instantly, a smile spreads across his face. “Hey, Alex. What’s up?”
“So,” Alex says, stopping in front of him, grinning, “tell me about Pride.”
Willie’s eyes shine at the request, just as beautiful as the lights from the wedding.
“I’d love to.”

Station 19 rewatch: 4x14
Going to try to do another rewatch before my family wakes up. We have a lot to do today and there is a dark cloud over the house after loaing our cat this week. Here's hoping i can get through one of my favorite episodes before they get up.
Surrera is so cute here and the whole food thing, like girl where is our payoff on this baby that was so clearly teased. Or is there another medical condition that could be blamed on her excessive eating.
Im so glad maya and andy are friends again. I loge their friendship.
I'm glad andy acknowledges that getting married doesnt fix things; but i worry that if maya and carina hit a rough patch, andy will remind maya of this conversation or use her own issues with sullivan and their marriage as an i told you so.
Danielle is beautiful but does anyone else think she lost weight, random question but just looking at her in her uniform there she seems smaller and it worries me. Didnt really notice last time i watched this episode but am i alone in this.
Oh carina baby you so dont want to go. I just want to hug you.
Jack is so cute, he deserves a family so much but i really do fear he'll be killed off.
Im surprised ben reached out to Sullivan instead of dean.
I love this outfit on maya. Carina your girl is flirting with you and thinking of happier times, engage with her.
I love that maya opens up with carina about her dad and the protests and the happenings in the world with him. It shows so much growth and im here for it. Also anyone else annoyed that one carina answered gabriella's phone call when maya is opening up to her and two that she didnt turn it off for their last few hours together.
The look of like disappointment/devestation on maya's face when carina answers the call and walks away from her is too much hurt.
So sad that bailey isnt there and that ben is alone for even a second of this.
I'm glad andy and sullivan came to be there with ben. Like i get why they wanted andy but im sad after ben and Dean's episode dean wasnt there.
Oh jack, i dont even know what to say besides oh jack lol.
The drama with trash girl is too much lmao. I know its important for jack/inara but its just too much.
Carina packing up her knives being a trigger for maya like she's leaving forever is heartbreaking.
Carina snapping at maya hurts, dont be mean to baby. Also the kitchen sign is totally carina's doing and though she hadnt confided in maya yet that she is her home its a dead giveaway.
I really need screen grabs of the changing words on the sign.
The kids talk, the coming out talk and the marriage talk are all things that should not be done while packing or doing anything else.
Wait it totally sounded like she said "it felt pregnant" lmao or i just have babies on the brain.
Now carina being flirty and maya not reciprocating.
Maya you shouldve pushed the marriage talk now if it was what you really wanted. Instead of letting carina drop the i never wanted to get married bomb and walk away.
Andy and ben together, this friendship is beautiful. I feel like it took several seasons for ben to really get in good the team. Im trying to think of other moments besides the prt support and such when he really connected with folks before this season and none come to mind. He has been an outlier from my memory, tell me im wrong with examples please.
Lmao "you slept with my wife which means we are in a pod", things a pandemic makes funny.
Thats just wrong, giving gibson shit still. Dont hit the puppy with the newspaper when he's doing nothing wrong.
Once again with gabriella, seriously carina turn off your phone and be present with maya and maya alone.
Maya's jealousy is everything. This argument ugh, so good and just the tip of the iceberg.
I hope that maya does take the month break and the months after to really get to know the us immigration system and what it will take for carina to become an american citizen as well as learn more italian. I dont need her fluent but id love to see her use some italian with carina. She lost her brother who she spoke to in her native tongue itd be nice for her to gain that in her wife.
I love how carina stops herself as she raises her voice at maya, like she realizes it may be triggering to maya. I really do think the show and actresses put in a lot in this episode to show how well they know each other and have grown. I feel like they talk more even if we dont see it and maya is working on her issues with carina's love and support. I also do love how this argument ends though ;)
Once again maya opening up and finally carina is there and not sidetracked. And its nice carina opens up as well.
Ben's dream with the different versions of himself and his mom is funny and heartbreaking.
Joey in the dream lmao.
The nice thing about ben is if he gets hurt on the job and cant be a firefighter anymore he has other professions to fall back on.
Oh jack. I just want you to get your happy ending.
I still think its so weird to be talking about jack after they had sex but im glad they are in a place that is so comfortable and can laugh about him.
Once again another bomb dropped, kids. This is something that needs to be discussed properly.
Oh maya dont drop the marriage bomb like that. And i guess i dont underatand the outrage of the "just because", like why would carina think it was anything but that when it was dropped on her like that and after she said she didnt want to get married. This fight is so much about misunderstandings and hurtful comments.
I get how maya's fear gets the best of her here especially after carina said they just moved in together because they didnt want to be apart (asif that is a bad thing) and it was bureaucracy.
And i can understand why maya's fear hurts carina but they both needed to take a minute to breathe and try to talk it out.
I do like when carina tells maya to breathe, again like she knows her triggers and feels maya is on the verge of a panic attack.
If carina felt she married maya when she moved in i really dont see the harm in making it official. Would her having been moved out in italy for 6 months or more have felt like a divorce. I really need to know more about her logic here.
I agree why not just do it.
You've both said enough carina. I hate that she just walks away, so un carina like.
How did jack end up at the hospital? Was he called or what?
Andy is such a good friend this episode, checking on everyone.
Gabriella is so right noone wants to be proposed to the way maya kind of did. Like i cant help but wonder how carina would've taken a true proposal.
Im so glad gabriella spoke some truth to carina and turned her around on the marriage idea.
If we let the wrong decisionss rule how we live our lives things in the world would be so different. Less babies possibly and fewer marriages among other things.
Once again andy being a good friend this episode.
If carina hadnt shown up im curious what maya's next move wouldve been after talking to andy.
Love the proposal and love how its carina who announces they are getting married.

cats in the cradle by Duck_Life
Fandoms: Supernatural [Gen, No Archive Warnings Apply] Words: 1,745
Tags: Claire Novak & Patience Turner, Cats, Psychic Abilities, Grandparents & Grandchildren, Friendship, Found Family, claire novak will see a stray animal and be like, is anyone gonna project onto this, and not wait for an answer
Summary: Claire helps Patience hone her abilities. Patience helps Claire track down a cat.
Written for SPN Women Week Day 1. Prompt: "skills"
Bub is missing again.
“Bub” is the name of a mean stray cat missing a chunk from his ear. Claire’s been leaving cat food out for the ugly old thing for weeks now, and whenever he doesn’t come running she panics.
So, for the third time, Patience finds herself enlisted in the search for a cat that Claire doesn’t even technically own. “If it’s gonna bother you this much every time,” Patience says, “why don’t you just take it in? You know, get him his shots, a collar, a microchip.”
Claire makes a face at her before turning back to look at the road. She’s been driving around the neighborhood slowly, scoping out every shrub and checking under every parked car. “Bub doesn’t want to be chained down,” she explains. “He’s a free spirit.”
Alright, well, Patience is too tired to unpack that right now. She lets it lie and looks out the passenger’s side window, alert for any signs of movement. “Maybe he was never a stray at all,” she tries, “and his owner finally tracked him down and brought him home.”
“Do you know that?” Claire asks.
Claire’s always asking if Patience knows things— what happened on Jody’s date last weekend, what Dean’s middle name is, whether or not Alex is the one who ate the last ice cream sandwich in the freezer. Patience keeps trying to explain that she can only see the future. “Psychic” might be a misnomer— her abilities are precognitive, not telepathic.
She basically gets previews, little spoilers about what’s to come. And though she’s been working at it, she can’t seem to get her psychic abilities to do the kind of reading and divination her grandma could do. She gets glimpses with no context, no backstory.
Missouri Moseley could walk into a room and feel every ounce of heartbreak, grief, hope and faith in the people standing there. Patience can barely pick up on it when Alex and Claire are pissed at each other.
Still, Claire brings her along whenever the cat goes missing. Seems to think her ESP can home in on missing animals. Patience keeps telling her otherwise, and yet here she is, once again. That’s the trouble with having no social life and no better plans.
Maybe she should join a book club.
Claire rounds the corner, eyes darting around for any sight of the mangy cat. The first time Bub vanished from Claire’s sight, all the neighbors seemed intent to help. They explained they hadn’t seen the cat, but hoped Claire would find him soon and offered baked goods and platitudes in the meantime.
But these things have an expiration date. You can only lose the cat so many times before the routine gets old and the neighbors lose interest.
“My educated guess ?” Patience sighs. “The cat’ll come back when it gets hungry. Just like before.”
Claire makes a tch sound and mouths “educated guess” under her breath. Apparently, because Patience is psychic she’s supposed to be omniscient. “So which is it?” Claire says. “Is he back with his ‘real’ owners or is he going to come home when he gets hungry?”
“Don’t be a jerk,” Patience says. “I’m here, aren’t I? I’m helping you.”
“... Yeah. You are,” Claire says, ducking her head. “Sorry.” Her eyes scan the road ahead, looking for the telltale streak of a cat darting out from under a parked car or vanishing around a tree trunk. Still nothing. “Hey, Patience the Pet Psychic,” Claire says. “You should write that down, that’d be a great children’s book.”
“Very funny,” Patience says, rolling her eyes. She’s silent for a few moments and then says, “Cla-aire the Monster Slayer.”
“That doesn’t really rhyme.”
“Sure it does.”
When the sky darkens and the streetlights flick on, Claire drives them back to the house, Bub-less and dejected. “I’m sure he’s fine,” Patience tries.
Claire bunches her shoulders, the collar of her leather jacket looking like a cat’s raised hackles. Maybe, Patience thinks, that’s the connection— Claire in many ways resembles an angry cat. She and Bub might be kindred spirits.
“I’m just tired,” Claire says, yanking the keys out of the ignition. “We’ll try again tomorrow.”
Patience considers pointing out that Claire could at least ask instead of just assuming , considers reminding Claire that she has her own life outside of playing “pet psychic.”
But she doesn’t actually have anything to do tomorrow. Or the rest of the week. And as futile as it feels riding around looking for a runaway cat, it is something to do. And it makes Claire feel better.
And… straining her psychic muscles to pick up on any trace of the old tomcat is at least better than doing nothing and letting her abilities degrade. Over the last year, she’s been trying to find ways to train her brain, shape her psychic visions into something useful.
Jody’s supportive, but she, like most people, doesn’t know anything about being psychic. Kaia’s got a fraught relationship with her own special skills and usually chooses not to talk to Patience about seeing the future, and Alex is so entrenched in nursing and hunting that the few “normal” moments she gets at home are devoted to unwinding and relaxing.
Which makes Claire Patience’s most ardent supporter in developing her psychic abilities. A very grouchy, blonde and mostly clueless Yoda. What she lacks in background knowledge she makes up for in persistence.
“Hey, Patience, guess which hand?” Claire will ask, holding the last fortune cookie behind her back. “Hey, Patience, what number am I thinking of?” Claire will ask, perched on the arm of the couch. “Hey, Patience, heads or tails?” Claire will ask, flipping a coin to catch it in midair.
That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of it works— Patience can’t predict things at will. Her psychic visions operate on a schedule of their own, with no concern for Patience’s own convenience or comfort. One minute, she’s watching shitty reality TV while Alex nods off on her shoulder. The next, she’s watching Jody narrowly avoid being bitten by a vampire.
It’s a lot different from just guessing a coin toss. Still. Patience can’t help but think that her grandma would’ve passed all of Claire’s little tests with flying colors.
That night, Patience doesn’t dream about anything— at least, not anything useful. She has an anxiety dream about being lost in Aldi, roaming the aisles with increasing frustration. But nothing about the future. Nothing about Bub the cat.
She’s pouring herself a bowl of cereal when Claire stomps inside, the porch door swinging shut behind her. “Still gone,” she says darkly, grabbing the cereal box and her own bowl. “Food hasn’t been touched.”
“Claire,” Patience says, “why don’t we just go to the SPCA? You can get yourself a cat that’s not, you know—”
“What? Not damaged? Not a lost cause? Not hard to love?”
Whoa, Patience wants to say. “A cat that’s not missing ,” she finishes. “We can get him his shots and a collar and everything.”
“I don’t— I don’t just want some random cat,” Claire says. “I want to find Bub. I want… I want to find him and bring him home. I have to bring him home.”
“I know,” Patience says, and just like that she does . She does know.
She knows everything, feels everything, the aching loss in Claire’s bones that’s both recent and so, so old. Memories of Claire hitchhiking and stealing and conning her way through the country, desperately chasing a mother who was desperately chasing a dead man. Jimmy Novak’s voice in her head, his face seen through Claire’s eyes, Please, Castiel, take me. Just take me. Again, his forehead pressed to hers, Take care of your mom, okay, bub?
Bub.
Patience looks at Claire. Sees her, in a way she hasn’t been able to see anyone before. “Bub… ‘bub’ is what your dad used to call you.”
Claire squints at her. “Uh. Yeah,” she says. “Wait, I didn’t… I didn’t tell you that.”
“No,” Patience breathes, meeting her eyes across the kitchen, “you didn’t.”
Slowly, a grin spreads across Claire’s face. “Holy shit , Patience, you just… ? You just did that. You, like, read me.”
“I, uh, I didn’t know. That I could do that,” Patience says, caught between marveling at this new development and feeling self-conscious at intruding on Claire’s emotions and her past.
Claire doesn’t seem put off at all. She’s actually bouncing with excitement. “We gotta test this out. Oh my God. It’s like a whole new Pokemon evolution for you.”
“It’s not really. Like that. In any way.”
But Claire is already humming the Pokemon theme song. She grabs her car keys. “Alright, well, let’s go look for that cat. I’ve got a good feeling about today.”
“I read you, Claire, that doesn’t mean I can read the cat,” Patience reminds her.
“Yeah, yeah, but you can still help me look,” Claire says. “I don’t need your third eye, just the two on your face.”
“That’s… yeah, fine,” Patience acquiesces. To be honest, she’s buzzing with the knowledge of what she can do with her powers. If Claire’s happy to be her test subject, she’ll spend all day with the girl. “Just let me grab a coffee.”
“Ooh, me too. Wait!” She wiggles her fingers toward Patience. “Do you Know how I like my coffee?”
“Half-and-half. And enough sugar to kill you,” Patience reels off. “But that’s not because I’m psychic. I’ve just seen you fix yourself coffee before.”
“Y’know, I think the line between ‘psychic’ and ‘observant’ is thinner than you might think.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Patience says, and then pretends to stumble backward toward the table, overacting the part. “Oh, oh, I’m having a vision… I see you … making coffee for us…”
Claire rolls her eyes, but she dutifully sets her keys down and busies herself with getting the travel mugs out. “That’s not gonna work for everything, you know.”
“Aaah I see you bringing Jody’s suit to the dry cleaners next week. I also see you driving me to the science museum.”
“Hilarious.”
Patience smiles at her. It’s nice to have someone else get excited about her powers. It’s nice to be allowed to be excited about this, to learn a new skill and have it mean something good to someone besides herself. She doesn’t feel like a freak or a failure. She just feels… like a psychic.
She feels like her grandma would be proud.

Being children, both Roman and Bailey looked towards summer the most. It was the time when there wasn’t any school and the two boys had all the time together to have fun and make the most of life.
Today happened to be one of those days! Where the sun was out but the weather was just right. The Shoda estate was pretty lively, the two boys living at Kazuo’s (their other dad’s manor) for the summer with all the things they could desire (Roman and Bailey’s moms, Arielle and Diana were gone for the past few weeks to attend the summer olympics as Diana made it as a marathon runner). One of those things included a basketball court. Roman, lounged on one of the chairs besides Sung Min’s black cat, Ravage, who was sleeping on one of the lounge chairs. He eyed the empty basketball court every now and then, contemplating whether or not he should just get up and start shooting some hoops by himself. Bailey, meanwhile, was swimming around in the pool with his step siblings, Travis and Sung-Min, both who had been visiting home for the week, their other children in the house with Kazuo, preparing for dinner. When Orion comes out while the two boys are out in the backyard, Roman is surprised to see he already had a basketball in hand.
“Rome! You wanna play some b-ball?” Orion called out to Roman.
“Uh, yeah, sure!” Roman replied, getting up from the lounge chair. He gave a gentle pet to Ravage before heading over to the basketball court. Orion bounced the ball a couple of times before passing it to Roman. “So… you’ve played basketball before?” Roman asked, bouncing the ball, testing it before holding it.
“Of course! That’s how I afforded my uni tuition,” Orion replied. He then pointed to one of the hoops as Roman’s and the other as his. Roman started with his offense and began to move.
“You just. Don’t look like the type to play,” Roman then said as he passed Orion.
“Well, I was a lot less bulkier back then. At that time, I was just tall and slim,” he said.
“I can’t really see that,” Roman replied. Orion couldn’t help but chuckle. Then to his surprise, Orion then swiped the ball from him and went to the other side of the court before jumping.
“He shoots, he scores, what a star!” Orion announced proudly as he dunked the ball into the hoop. He passed the ball back to Roman to start up the next round.
“Hey! Let me join!” Travis then called out from the pool. He gave a fistbump to Bailey before getting out of the pool and drying off with a towel. He accidentally threw the towel on top of Ravage and grabbed it immediately as he soon heard a very annoyed meow. “Oop, sorry, Ravage! Didn’t see you there.” Ravage stared at him for a moment in annoyance before going back to sleep. “Careful, Rome, we’re playing with an ex-UCLA NCAA champion,” Travis then warned. “I’ll play on your team,” he then said, fistbumping Roman.
“Hah! That was a long time ago, Trav,” Orion replied. “These knees aren’t like they used to be.” The three then went at it, going a few rounds. Every now and then Roman and Travis would manage to score against Orion, but the majority of the score was on Orion’s side. When Roman jumped up and made a dunk, he could hear Bailey clapping from the pool, Sung Min giving a supportive cheer on their part. At this point Ravage had stopped napping and sat at the side of the basketball court, watching the match.
The commotion drew out most of the rest of the family, Scott, Damien and Kazuo still staying inside to finish up the food to bring out to the backyard for dinner. Bailey and Sung Min got out of the pool, the two heading in to clean up for dinner. At this point, Orion was getting tired and slower. But with one last hurrah, he got the ball onto Roman’s side of the court and tried to do what he did way back then, jumping backwards and dunking it one last time. When his legs landed back on the court, he panted for a moment and straightened back up. There was cheering from the side and he looked over to see Kazuo leaning against the screen door frame with a smile on their face.
“I think that’s enough basketball for today, dinner’s ready and it looks like your old man’s knees are about to give out,” Kazuo called out towards Roman. Orion went ahead and approached Kazuo to give them a kiss on the cheek and they laughed before pushing him away slightly. “Gross! You’re all sweaty,” they said. Orion only laughed and kissed them on the cheek regardless. The rest of the family went ahead and sat at the large patio table, a spread of food prepared for dinner.
On the table was a large portion of kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, chicken long rice, white rice and some poi. There were some cooked vegetables set aside as well as some cut up pineapple.
“Orion made poi recently so of course I had to try and make some Hawaiian dishes,” Kazuo said.
“Smells like home,” Orion smiled.
“Well, these are your mother’s recipes,” they smiled. The family went ahead and started getting food, passing it around. After a few minutes of eating, Roman spoke up.
“Hey, uh, dad,” Roman said. Orion immediately perked up at that and had to suppress a smile. It was the first time Rome had openly called him dad. Even Bailey leaned forward and looked at Roman in surprise. When Roman felt all eyes on him, his face flushed and he looked away in embarrassment. “Can we, can we play basketball again some other time?” he then asked sheepishly. Orion couldn’t help but smile.
“Of course, once my knees are better, that is,” he replied.
“Hey, if you do play basketball, let me know alright?” Winona then said, pointing her fork at Roman. Bailey then snapped his fingers, getting Roman’s attention for a moment.
“Ask him about fishing too!” Bailey then signed quickly.
“What’d he say?” Cameron asked.
“Something something fishing,” Damien replied. Kazuo’s kids were still learning ASL after all.
“I’ll take you fishing too,” Orion then said fondly, understanding what Bailey signed completely. “I can plan another camping trip if you’d like,” he then said, eating some of the kalua pork.
“Oh, tell me when that happens cus I’d love to go camping,” Travis then said.
“Sounds like a big family camping trip~” Kazuo then said. The rest of the family then fell into their normal conversations, laughter in the air. Roman couldn’t help but smile. Who knew summer could be so amazing.
