i have made... a book! for the first time! renegade publishing’s binderary inspired me to actually give it a try instead of just thinking a lot about it.

i did go out and buy some tools for this, but i was trying to do as much as i could with materials i already had. (i’ve already been slowly working at learning how to use scribus for typesetting bc i have some work experience with indesign typesetting but there’s no goddamn way i will pay adobe for that. i could have done a nicer layout and job of typesetting, i’m a little bothered by some of the things i left in, but i was trying to get it done rather than be perfectionist.) so, printed all this on my very small and weak deskjet printer on regular printer paper, covers are covered in cool paper i bought but the substance of them is some cardboard i cut out of a box i had, thread is some embroidery floss i had that i waxed (? not. well. or maybe well? idk more practice needed). and that’s also why i decided to do a coptic stitch binding, because it seemed simple for my first try and because it didn’t require me to buy a whole bunch of stuff for the binding. i definitely messed up some of the stitching, especially on the covers and there’s some reeeeeal loose stitches when you look at the long running ones inside the signatures, but it all seems to work :D

the fic is a collection of some of my batfam genfics! my longest solo authored fic is 16k and i didn’t particularly want to bind it for a multitude of reasons, so i landed on making a collection instead, and it was kind of fun tbh. i got to decide which ones to use and put them into an order i liked and i thought made sense. ended up with 10 fics and 96 pages (in case anyone is curious: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)

I'm an artist and animator. I use Krita as my main art program with adobe animate/flash experience. I usually make fanworks of things I'm interested in, but am working on releasing original stuff very VERY soon.

It's almost like I write my AUs to not reflect on the canon timeline. It's almost like those are personal fanworks that I do for fun in my free time with my friends and partner because I enjoy writing. It's like they aren't meant to be accurate portrayals of the canon story or characters since it's an, oh I don't know, alternate universe. And clearly, if you both cried and masturbated to my fics then I'm doing something right because that's the point of them. To have fun and be unhinged and not worry about canon and just explore different dynamics in my own little world of my making.

I have fanworks that have nothing to do with sex or angst or anything like that on my safe-for-work archive, but I think that sex is funny so I write about it. Sue me for enjoying a specific genre of literature. I guess that means that my works for the canon timeline of the show have all been for naught, and I should just stop analyzing canon because I'm clearly not allowed to have both cakes. Right? I can't enjoy my own personal stories that aren't supposed to reflect on canon at all and it's supposed to feel "OC" because the interpretation of the characters changes for every AU because I also enjoy canon. Right?

I explained the other day that when I talk about TSAMS there are two things that happen in my head. There's the canon timeline that I do my "professional" writings on. The same writings that the VAs and most of the mod team have joined my thread on the official discord for. And then there's the silly little version in my head that I play with like dolls that has nothing to do with canon and never was supposed to be and that's the version for my friends. See also:

I'm not hiding the fact that I make NSFW content and I never had. It takes 30 seconds of research to find that content if you want it, and you've made it obvious that you've engaged with that content, so I don't think you have room to talk, anon.

Let me break it down in terms that you can understand.

I am not pushing to get me on the writing team. I am not the one flooding the TSBS server, I am not the one writing letters, I am not the one overwhelmingly wanting me on the team. I am just some dude who "writes fics to cry and masturbate to" and also analyzes the canon story with my excessive knowledge of psychology and neurology and other miscellaneous information. People know me better for the second than the first. Most of the people who are pushing for this to happen have never read a single one of my fics (as far as I'm aware), and have purely read my analyses. Do not insult me by insinuating that I cannot separate my personal and professional level work, because I do it every day.

I have been making deep-dive, psychological, and lore-accurate analyses of the show for over six months. I have almost never been wrong when I make an analysis, and people come to me to help them understand the lore. My reputation in this fandom is high for several different reasons, but most people don't know me as "The sad porn author" because that's the smallest fraction of the content that I produce that it's actually insignificant. I can see what kind of opinion you have of me, and it's at once amusing and insulting, so do me a favor and stop interacting with my content, because you're bringing all sorts of vibes that I don't agree with onto my blog.

Also, there was no reason to drag DoctorF into this. They are a wonderful and kind individual and they're also doing their own thing for their own amusement. If that's something you have issue with, since you clearly do, then do yourself a favor and stop interacting with their content.

And again, in case you missed it the first time. I'm not the one that wants me on the writing team. It's everyone else. Maybe you should think about what the implications of that is, instead of being jealous that no one knows who you are. And good job being so brave and putting on your big boy shorts just to shit in them by hiding behind anon. Go clean up your act, anon, you've wasted my time and I loathe people who waste my time.

2024 has been a weird year for me, writing-wise. I've written...very little. Embarrassingly little, actually.

However!

I finished up with my most stressful and time-consuming projects near the end of October, and that weight has been slowly easing. I feel better about moving forward with actual writing again. Moreover, I've spent a lot of the year refilling my creative well. I've been doing a LOT of reading, which I haven't done in ages, and really sitting down to check in with myself about my process.

Turns out, I'm less of a pantser than I thought! Sitting down and plotting in that bright and bitter dawn (as well as chatting shop with some publishing friends about their own processes) has really forced me to look at how I approach original work vs fanwork (but also, short stories vs novel-length work).

I'm hoping to finish a lot of my other miscellaneous stuff in the first week of December (and I have a bunch of beta reading to do for a Trigun zine). Ideally by the new year, I will have:

act 1 of kgtac is completed, and is the main draw here. act 2 is currently ongoing and is pretty much completely unrelated to act 1. i think it's alright. but act 1 is absolutely a must-read.

do i even need to explain this one? it's detective pony. it's a great character study of dirk. i'm sure you've all heard of it. if you haven't read it, go do that now. please.

Jade Route by SPICYYETI (jade)

jade route is a post-epilogues comic following meat!jade who is trapped in a body controlled by calliope. it's a take on the "ending" that the epilogues don't offer. i think it's pretty clever - it does a great job of using the medium. also, it's about jade :) may or may not have had an impact of some size on how i personally read jade.

ok, this series only contains one fic (for now). it's called "the calm is terrifying when the storm is all you've known." ok i literally could not put this fic down. it has the best hook i've ever seen. a proper fucking novel. and some of the best character writing i have EVER seen for the whole strilonde family. augh it's so good. and the art is really good too (YES IT'S ILLUSTRATED).

The Eurydice Suite by callmearcturus [E] (gen; davekat)

inception au. some of the coolest action and plot stuff with an ensemble cast i've ever read followed by the best davekat fic i've ever read. really cool stuff.

Catacombs by oxfordRoulette [E] (jadekat; dirkjohn)

another series. it's a d&d-like au. very tongue in cheek about this fact at times. the real draw here is the third fic in the series, Vanitas Vanitatum, which has stellar dirk and john writing. you could read it on its own, but the first two fics are also QUITE good, are about jadekat, and the second one sets up vanitas beautifully, so... you should read all three??? :3c

Homestuck Made This World by Ranged Touch (analysis)

hsmtw is a readthrough/analysis podcast whose goal is not to analyze homestuck on its own terms, but to challenge it and put it back into its historical context. it's not the easiest to listen to as a homestuck fan - the hosts are very critical at times, and i don't always agree with their opinions on things that happen in homestuck - but i think the analysis about what homestuck does, tries to do, and is responding to is very important, especially for people who weren't there for homestuck's original run. which... includes me! i read homestuck in 2014. i missed most of the most important homestuck historical moments. in any case, hsmtw changed the way i look at homestuck and other media. highly recommend, at the very least for understanding homestuck's historical context

QUANTUM BREAK BINGO FOR FRACTURE DAY!

I'm running another Quantum Break fanwork challenge! And you (yes YOU) can join it, if you want!

Fracture Day is coming up (the day that time breaks! hooray!) on October 8th/9th (weird canon discrepancies my beloved) and I wanted to do something fun for it! Sooooooo I'm running a BINGO challenge!

You can sign up to request a BINGO card anytime from Sept. 19th to Sept. 26th. I'll send everyone their cards on Sept. 27th, and then you'll have until Oct. 8th to finish your card! Winners will be announced on the 9th :3

*EDIT: The schedule and deadline have been updated! Since many participants in the QB Discord didn't have enough time to complete their prompts, the challenge has been extended to Friday, October 27th!

The sign-up form can be found here, and the rules (and other various info) can be found here! Basically, when you sign up, you'll get to add a bunch of Quantum Break-related prompts to your own custom BINGO card, and then you have a little over two weeks to try to write, draw, and create things to fill those prompts and get a BINGO!

I've sorted the prompts into three categories: Characters, Ships, and Tropes (and other miscellaneous ideas). When you sign up and request a card, you can choose what kind of prompts you want, and pick a few specific ones too, if you like!

What counts as filling a prompt? Basically anything, as long as you post it somewhere that I can see it! :3c Fic, art, meta, edits, fanvids, cosplay, anything goes! Your fics can be short drabbles or long epics, your art can be just a doodle or a whole painting, doesn't matter to me! I just wanna see Quantum Break stuff! That's the whole point of this challenge!

Aaaand of course, this wouldn't be a challenge if I wasn't offering some kind of prize. Yup, the first people to get a BINGO or a full card blackout will win something! You can check the info document (linked above) for specifics, but basically, it's these:

I'll think things to myself like "damn bitch you only posted 9 fics/fic updates this year so far compared to the 55 you posted last year" and then realize how ridiculous that sounds because before the wild rush of last year my average number of fics per year was either one or. Zero. Like yeah it's not as much as last year but it's still higher than zero......There was a period long ago in my pkmn XY phase when I wrote a little more than 0-1 fics per year but that was back when I was a fresh young uni student lmao. I like to think I've improved in writing since then or at least become better at writing guys fucking even if those guys are now stupid racecar drivers instead of stupid French tree and his Pyroar bf or stupid French tree and his mega flaming chicken bf ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not saying I feel pressured to write or anything it's just a frustration at myself that I still have so many story ideas I wanna get out but the drive and ability to write them does not seem to be flowing nearly as freely this year as it was before. Like I feel like I'm being annoying when I keep talking about stats and numbers on fic/fanworks of all things but it's nice to see the total number of fics steadily going up...I like feeling like I've contributed something lasting even if it's just miscellaneous gay racer scenarios
