According to my grandmother, this menorah belonged to my great grandmother (her mother-in-law), though my dad doesn't remember my great grandmother having it. Then again, I don't know how often he visited for Chanukah, I didn't know about my dad's childhood menorah until we inherited it a few years ago, and I have absolutely no idea what the menorah my mom used as a kid (if any) looked like. It may not be my favorite menorah design, but it's really special to have one that goes back three generations <3

menorah means lamp. the 7-branch lamp used in the temple and the 9-branch lamp used on hanukkah are both menorot. one we call temple menorah, the other we call hanukkiah. both we can call menorah.
#saw a poll debating whether it’s hanukkiah or menorah & tumblr refreshed before i could reblog it with my thoughts#jumblr#hanukkah

A quick reminder to clean the wax off of your menorah before you put it away. Do it now, before Shabbat.
An easy way is to lay it down flat on a baking sheet with several paper towels under it and put it in the oven on its lowest setting (<200°F/90°C) for 5-10 minutes or until everything is soft and easy to wipe away. If any part of your menorah is plastic, a hair dryer is an even better option.
I know a lot of people go for dunking into boiling water but gentle, dry heat is kinder to any material a menorah might be made of.

Giving a bit of love to the jewish girlies for the turn of the century au
Happy Hanukkah! It wasn’t as big of a holiday in the 1910s as it is now for jewish people, especially compared to Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, with most just lighting the menorah and reading the story of Maccabees. It was a celebration mostly for families with kids with small gifts for children, but few temple services outside of very zealous communities. Many jewish shops wouldn’t even close early for it. After WWII it became a much more important holiday as the story of the Maccabees was a source of great cultural pride, relatability, and hopeful resilience in the face of loss for those who survived the nazi persecution in Europe during the war. Perhaps as teens/young adults with busy lives and no kids of their own, Kitty and Wanda may not have observed it in the early 1910s outside of lighting candles, but for any Jewish followers I have, I wanted to make sure you got to feel represented too right now as Christmas is quite literally going on at the same time as Hanukkah this year, it may feel like its overshadowing it more than previous years. Sorry… ^^; fun fact! In the year 1910, Hanukkah happened from dec 25th jan 2nd just like this year!

I love seeing the menorah on the mantle. As is who celebrates it feels nice to be included! Also the Kwanzaa candle holder (idk what is called). All in all it’s nice to see holidays of other religions be included even though it’s a mainly Christmas short!
Oh yeah! The Kinara was a nice touch. It was wonderful to see where everyone can be recognized ❤️✨

This menorah is almost from the Disney Store from back in the days when a) there were Disney Stores outside of NYC and the Disney Parks, and b) said Disney Stores actually sold more than just a few cheap toys and clothes and costumes for kids (aka the 90s). It's a really cute menorah, especially for a kid, though difficult to clean, as you can see by the wax spots in the snow making it look like the Hundred Acre Wood has turned into a murder scene. Some years ago, Rabbit (and, by extension, Gopher) broke off the menorah, and I finally got around to gluing them back on this year, so we get to use it again! I've put little tinfoil cups in each of the hunny pot candle holders in an attempt to keep it reasonably clean.
The candles we're using for this menorah are beeswax candles we found on sale in our synagogue's gift shop after Chanukah last year. They're made of sheets of colored beeswax rolled up around a wick. So far, they're working pretty well. We're using them in this menorah because it's the only one we have they fit in.
