REVIEWING AND RANKING EVERY GAME I GOT FROM THE STEAM SUMMER SALE

UNRANKED: ULTRA STREET FIGHTER IV

okay look I know I said I'd be ranking all of these but putting a fighting game up against six linear-progression single-player adventure type games feels a bit unfair.

as for whether I liked it: yeah it's alright. it's street fighter, it's fun. only time will tell how much my brother and I will get out of it, but I'm already feeling like I don't like it quite as much as 5. how much of that is due to 4 not having Urien is anyone's guess.

#6: CROW COUNTRY

I'm gonna be honest I didn't fuck with this game nearly as much as I thought I would.

maybe it's because I'm new to the genre. maybe it's because I've been spoiled by autosave. or maybe it's just because I can't aim to save my life. but losing upwards of 20 minutes of progress every time some creature I failed to hit or juke tagged me one too many times got frustrating pretty fast.

I didn't hate my time with Crow Country. the environments are gorgeous, the story kept me intrigued, and filling out my mental list of "oh shit I can go here now"s was still satisfying. if this is your thing don't let me dissuade you, I just wasn't built for it.

#5: KAMIKO

Kamiko is decent fun, but there's not really a whole lot to say about it. It's a short and sweet zelda-esque game where the meat of the playtime comes from trying to go through it as fast as possible, and as you'll see later I happen to enjoy going fast. enjoyable, but not super meaty. if you like routing and time management give it a shot.

#4: PONY ISLAND

Alright, this is where we get into the Good Shit.

Pony Island is a game in which you play a game called Pony Island made by The Devil From The Bible. every few minutes there's some new weird meta setpiece to keep you on your toes, plus the code puzzles and pony sections between are solid fun on their own. it's a great time. and if you're interested, there's a pretty solid reward for getting 100%.

if I had to dock points, it didn't seem to have much in the way of replayability, but that's not a huge dealbreaker. I really need to get my hands on Inscryption now.....

#3: SPOOKY'S JUMPSCARE MANSION REMASTERED

I'm not normally big on horror but Spooky's kept me coming back. despite going into it already knowing what all the specimens did, they managed to keep me on the edge of my seat because you never know when they're going to show up. combine the legitimate building terror with an offbeat and self-aware sense of humor and you have a damn fun package.

it's worth noting that as of writing this, I've only completed the main story. the DLC campaigns probably won't affect the final ranking? but I have a feeling they'll make me appreciate the game more.

#2: PEPPER GRINDER

Pepper Grinder is fucking awesome.

The level design is great, the soundtrack rips, and just moving around with the core gimmick of "what if you could drill and then jump out" is so good. I just really wish there was more of it.

I was able to get all the major in-level collectibles and reach the end in under 3 hours. the bulk of my playtime came from the time trials, which do manage to hit a sweet spot of encouraging you to push yourself without requiring CBT perfection. demolishing the gold medal on the final boss took me well over an hour's worth of attempts and may have been one of the most viscerally satisfying challenges I've ever completed in a game.

Pepper Grinder is really, really cool. But if it had another world's worth of levels it would be even cooler.

#1: CHICORY: A COLORFUL TALE

Man. I fucking love Chicory.

The vibes are immacculate. The story made me really feel for these gay little animals. The soundtrack is delightful (Lena Raine, everybody!). The exploration is rewarding. The painting mechanics made me actively want to go back to areas I'd already been to and recolor them better than I did originally, which is like. not something most games do. You can even draw penises everywhere if you want. There's something for everybody.

I'm having a hard time putting down exactly what made me fall head over heels for this game as much as I did - especially when I wasn't expecting to going into it. Maybe it was just in the right place at the right time. No matter how it cheated the system, Chicory is easily the best game I picked up.

And that's that. this was my first time doing something like this (especially on tumblr) so it felt kinda weird but idk lmk if I planted any seeds in your brain

Elf

A family favorite in our house. Touches on the overworking and mistreatment of employees through Greenway Press – Walter forced to choose between being with his family on Christmas Eve or losing his job, it’s implied Deb has a pet grooming business on the side to makes ends meet despite being a receptionist at a NY publishing company, etc.

Honestly most of the points come from Jonie’s underrated yet highly relatable storyline. She works in retail, exhausted and cynical towards the high-paced Christmas season which gives her little to no relief or reward, since she’s surviving on ramen noodles and using the employee showers because her water was cut off. Not expanded on enough to be considered a true Marxist piece but the effort is appreciated.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Although the meme is correct in that Rudolph’s red nose becomes desirable only once it proves to be useful, it does get points for exposing the harmful nature of forced conformity and those alienated by these capitalist ideals -- Rudolph, Hermie, the island of misfit toys -- are given a place to belong despite the perceived “flaws” that before made them undesirable.

Also the elves definitely have a free dental-plan now thanks to Hermie and are hopefully on their way to unionizing. Fucking superb you funky little misfit.

Klaus (2019)

Turns a member of the bourgeoisie into a man I’d trust to carry my mail. Respect for postal workers this movie contains was ahead of its time.

 No direct takedown of the establishment but a heartwarming message -- “A true selfless act always sparks another” bITCH I may be crying -- that emphasizes the importance of giving to others even when there is no selfish motivation to do so, which is inherently anti-capitalist.

The Santa dynasty itself seems to operate under the cutthroat rules of the business world where you must overthrow (or in this case, throw him off the roof) the former CEO in order to seize power.

A Christmas Carol 

THE ORIGINAL. Charles Dickens was not even in the neighborhood of fucking around with this one. CREATED the anti-capitalist Christmas genre!!

Rich man treats his employees like shit and gets terrorized by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Force him to redistribute his wealth by dragging him through a montage of his most epic fails -- oh, hey, remember when your fiancé left you? -- and make him listen as all his employees and relatives complain about his stingy ass. 

They end this slideshow by throwing this dude into his own grave. DIRECT ACTION. 

Like damn, the ghosts really said, “If you hoard your resources and ignore those in need when you could directly improve/save lives with no cost to yourself, you will die ALONE and you WILL pay for your crimes in hell.” Literally watching this movie is a catharsis for anyone who is or has been poor and working class. 

I’m including all versions of this movie but a special shout out to the Muppet version because it fucks the hardest.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Listen I’m not even in realms of joking with this one. This movie is THE anti-capitalist film of the holiday season. 

WhoVille commercializing Christmas and a fixation on consumer culture to the point where anything and anyONE who cannot be commodified -- aka the GRINCH -- is alienated? The Whos rediscovering that people should be cherished over material items once it all is stolen and they must confront how empty the holiday has become??

Cindy Lou becoming disillusioned in Christmas -- at an age that coincides when many children (those who celebrate Christmas at least) lost belief in Santa and had to wrestle with what the holiday means with the magic gone and they’re more aware of the rampant consumerism that taints the season?? Her resolve to find a meaning that goes beyond material consumption because if a holiday founded on goodwill doesn’t extend that goodwill to everyone, even those society deems undesirable, then what’s the point???

The Grinch despising Christmas because he is unable to participate and isolated from the Whos and also the better qualities within himself? His alienation serving to demonize him further as it allows the public to narrow his valid criticisms of the holiday down to him being different and thus inherently predisposed to evil?? And hmm isn’t it interesting that a LOT of this demonization comes via Mayor Augustus “generously paid for by the tax-payers of Whoville” Maywho, Mr. 1% himself.

The upper vs working class divide evident in the light show competition between Martha May and Betty Lou Who?? The opening scene of the shopping frenzy that mirrors our own consumerist culture and overworking of retail/poster workers??? This entire monologue:

“That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about. Gifts, gifts... gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. Hey I love your art, characters and ideas. I am curious where does the inspiration come from for designs?

Thank you very much!

It would be easy to answer by just saying that "everything inspires me!" (movies, games, books, music, life). But I will try to explain my design process (and I will try being honest!).

I started to enjoy designing the characters in my teens. At that time, I thought that every character in Japan was like Darkstalkers or Street Fighters (very cool and recognizable). So, I put the design bar quite high as a teen and tried to reach this “utopistic goal”. Later I found out that these characters were quite iconic (and they still are), and there was a team of designers behind them.

I have developed a habit of picking everything that catches my eyes, and sometimes I take photos or make notes from interesting shapes, ideas, and details in my Notebook (or saving to my hard drive), which I will later use for my future characters. I Mostly design the characters just for myself, and the human body is a quite dominating thing in my art. And that makes it easy to fit any kind of shape on the character’s body (like when designing armors). When I do artistic research, it always starts to pay off (and gives me extra ideas for the other stuff). The more I do research, the more I realize what kind of stuff I really like. The ideal design situation is when my new idea involves something that I have always liked, and now I have an excuse/reason to use it!

My ideas are usually like a continuum from the previous ones with some new things that I have learned. Sometimes the ideas are born when I get excited about something, or something that has started to annoy me. And sometimes I want to see something that doesn't exist (or so I think!), Like “it would be cool if“ this ”and“ this ”were compound. Usually, those things are quite opposite from each other, and sometimes those kinds of things give freshness and dynamic to the design (and I like to put familiar things into the new concepts).

Sometimes the first version of my idea might be quite simple or silly, but usually, it starts to develop with time and when I'm working with it. When the concept starts to be ready, I test it by doodling different variations from it (before I think it looks right to me). When I got the new character’s design ready, I like to make a series of variations from characters, so I will get many characters: D (I like creating groups). And one thing that has helped develops my ideas and bring new ones, is when I have the Privilege to have a discussion with someone about them.

One of my ideas that started as a Silly concept, was my Neon Knights world. First, I was just planning to make some kind of danmaku- dating sim game that would have been filled with cool spaceships and handsome (alien?) Princes from different planets (at that time I did listen to a lot of Eschatos ’soundtrack). Well, then it did develop to a bit deeper than that.

 One idea behind the Neon Knights characters ’designs was that if I would see them in the toy store, I would want to buy them! I wanted to wake up the same kind of feelings in me when as a kid I had my little ponies and Sweet Secret doll (admiring and treasuring beautiful objects and playing with them). And that gave me a nice challenge because now the Neon Knights ’characters are semi monsters. So, for me, it's like combining tokusatsu monsters and Riyoko Ikeda's manga.

For the last few years, I have been watching older movies. They have some clever ideas and interesting solutions (and they are technically easy to read). And sometimes it's good that they are not too close to my taste, because it gives me more space to go with the idea in my own direction

I think that creating ideas is as like any other skill, you can develop it while practicing and doing it.

i was gonna give him gaming, BUT he gives me painter vibes and i’m about to explain why. painting is so widely diverse that itadori would be so immersed with its different painting styles and medias. he’s a color theory(study of colors + how they work with each other) prodigy okay? critics praise him for his usage of colors. i believe his favorite style of painting would be objective abstract art. which has a subject but it’s un-uniformed, hence the name abstract. he’s the type of painter that lets their feelings and emotions control his brush strokes + choices of colors. the overall tone. if he’s feeling angry or has pent up energy, it’s mostly dark but vivid colors and erratic movement (think of scarlet reds with orange undertones with everdeen greens.) but if it’s a calmer mood, it more flowy and smooth, using more cooler tones (think of indigo blues, purples and maybe a splash of gold.) he hates oil painting, it’s too much work and preparation. watercolor is cool but it can be tedious sometimes. so acrylic is his go to media. he always has paint underneath his nails.

MEGUMI; Animation

animation is a whole spectrum of its own. there’s so many different parts that goes into making one, whether it’s television, a film or even 5 minute short. megumi likes the tediousness, patience + dedication it takes to make an animation. there’s different concentrations that one can focus on, but i think megumi either concentrates on technical animation (which that name states, the more technical part of animation. think of it like the joints between your bones.) examples would be elsa’s hair in frozen. she has over 400,000 strands of hair and disney had to create a new software to bring her hair to life. or, he would go into story animation (which focuses on story boarding and character design) megumi would have the most fun creating fun and emersive characters for audiences to enjoy. whether it be the main character with a complex personality and tragic backstory or a simple side character that’s meant for comic relief, megumi will love and cherish every character he creates like it’s his child T^T

NOBARA; Cermanics

cermanics or pottery, is no joke. like seriously, it’s another field of precision that i, unfortunately can not do. you would think because nobara is loud and bubbly that she wouldn’t be able to do it, or have the least amount of patience for it. but she actually really enjoys it. clay is soft + mendable. controllable. and nobara likes that, cause she can make it into whatever she desires. her favorite type of clay to work with is porcelain. who doesnt like making a pretty plate or pot? after that would be earthenware, which from there can fire it in the kiln (a special “oven” for baking clay) and put pretty glazes on them uwu. and what’s even greater about this, she even makes her own clay. she’s bojuee like that ;)

GOJOU; Film + Television

you would think he’d live for the spotlight, like being an actor, but he definitely gives me director vibes. he wants his name on the damn thing. not a featuring or just a size 7 font on the rolling credits at the end. no, size 24 “directed by: satoru gojou” but of course, he starts his way from the bottom up. feels more rewarding that way. gojou will not, for the life of him, put out basic movies. he creates the most compelling, imaginative worlds and characters. they’re engaging, thought provoking even. gojou believes that every aspect of film making, from color grading to the overall cinematography is important to tell the story. dark, depressive movies with twist and turns are desaturated and mystical with up close camera shots on the actors face during pivotal moments. jumpy soundtracks and explosive cgi makes for a great action/adventure film. delves into every genere because being well-rounded is better than being a one trick pony.

NANAMI; Art History + Restoration

i love this for him. out of all the majors on this list, i think this is the most unappreciated. nanami thinks the same, so honestly, if he wasn’t a sorcerer he would be an art historian. after saving up the money, he’s opened up his own little gallery in town, collecting all sorts of ancient and wild paintings + sculptures he can find. nanami has a deep love for art history, and he wants to share that with the younger generation. he does regular tours of the gallery for elementary childern. i think he’s secretly good with childern alright? nanami is so... smooth and thorough with his descriptions when he’s talking about a painting from the edo period, he has the kids captivated and engaged. he even invites high school and university students to do restoration presentations. showing them how to properly do so from cleaning the canvas, color correcting and even stretching it out on a new frame.

hey i'm one of those aforementioned "only-heard-blake-shelton" people - do you have any recs for better country music? i like finding new music but country is hard cause i don't really know where to start

I think the best way to explore any genre is to abandon the feeling that you’re obligated to develop an academic-level base of knowledge in the different foundations and aspects of it. If that’s something that actually interests you then by all means go for it, but despite how pretentious and rude people can get about music, it is at its heart just a form of expression - and while knowing which specific sounds might have influenced others can enhance the listening experience for some people, it’s not like there’s a prerequisite course load you need to take before you can start telling people you like country music at parties. 

Anyway, that point aside, here’s some basics: country itself is a really broad concept, and was initially defined more by its ideology and source than any specific structural musical qualities that it tended toward (although its creation was most heavily influenced by Irish, Mexican, and African musical traditions). The common use of instruments like guitars, banjos, and fiddles is more to do with the ease of accessibility and portability for poorer Americans of the late 1800s, who - especially in the West - tended to be at least somewhat nomadic. Thematically speaking, it was most often centered around the experiences of blue-collar workers, including but not limited to cowboys. Subsequently, it has suffered under the combined efforts of corporations and politicians to market a parody of rural America’s own culture right back at them, and that’s why - especially if you’re only in your 20’s or younger - it’s very possible your knowledge of it is defined by commercialized Bro Country (which in my opinion is almost always antithetical to the actual spirit of country music itself, and also from a musical perspective tends to be uninteresting bullshit). 

As far as subgenres go, the ideas quickly become so vague that it’s really up to the listener to decide how they want to categorize their music. Region and era can influence sound quite a bit, so that’s one way. Subject matter is another. Actual musical structure is a further one. I’m not going to bother and try to give you a comprehensive idea of all the options, because that’s impossible to do in anything shorter than an essay. Instead I’ll just fill you in on some of my favorites, and some song suggestions to go with them: 

Country Music You’ve Been Listening to This Whole Time Without Knowing It: this is an easy one to start with. Lots of folk music is also country music, whether you were aware of it or not. James Taylor, John Prine, John Denver, Bob Dylan…. You’ve been here this whole time. 

Outlaw Country: Tends to be either dark or mournful, but regardless it’s dramatic and fun. Usually framed around some fictional crime the singer has committed, which they have either been sentenced for or are on the run from. Good examples are Kate McCannon by Colter Wall, Mama Tried by Merle Haggard, Late July by Shakey Graves, Gallows Pole by Willie Watson, and Hell’s Canyon by Lost Dog Street Band

Spirituals: I’m definitely not going to tell you how to feel about religion itself - but given that music has been such a deeply rooted part of spiritual expression for as long as we’ve recorded history, and has very often evolved in tandem with or in response to religious movements, I think you’re really cutting yourself off from some good tunes if you try to ignore it entirely. Johnny Cash’s later stuff, especially, has the same dark overtones of his earlier Outlaw music but with the addition of gospel stylings and a religious severity that comes together in a way that’s honestly just straight up sexy to listen to. Ain’t No Grave and Redemption Day are probably the best two examples of this. On the other side, there’s the simplistic and heartfelt kind of spiritual country found in stuff like Hank Williams’ I Saw the Light, or I’ll Fly Away as performed by Gillian Welch, which I find really moving. 

Honky Tonk: On the subject of Hank Williams, honky tonk is really fun music, and I deeply resent the fact that it’s been incorporated into the classist caricature of rural stupidity. At its heart, honky tonk was just designed to be a good time, and the vocal techniques it employs are actually really difficult to master, so it deserves a lot more respect. Hank Williams, in particular, also tends to use it to get right at the heart of subjects I really enjoy (although don’t confuse him with his son Hank Williams Jr, who writes Bro Country and unfortunately seems to be a terrible person). Anyway, Mind Your Own Business is one of his (and one of my favorite personal anthems), and Wealth Won’t Save Your Soul is a powerful one too. Regarding more modern honky tonk, my favorite up-and-coming musician is named Nick Shoulders, and I’d recommend his songs Rather Low and Snakes and Waterfalls. 

Nice Comfortable Country Music Sung By Ladies: this is definitely a genre specific to just me, but it’s a type of music I grew up listening to a lot as a kid and I really love it. Like the title says, it’s just country songs by various very talented women who make you feel like you’re warm and at home. I Have a Need for Solitude by the great Mary Chapin Carpenter, Across the Great Divide by Nanci Griffith, Traveling Alone by Tift Merritt, Angel from Montgomery by Bonnie Raitt, Hammer and a Nail by The Indigo Girls

Poor Boy Blues: again, not a definitive stylistic subgenre so much as it is an opportunity to show off a few different songs of a few different styles that all follow a common and relatable theme, specifically one that is important to the overall genre itself. Dead End Street by Blake Mills, Crop Comes In by Chatham County Line, Thirteen Silver Dollars by Colter Wall, My Rifle My Pony and Me by Dean Martin, Cowpoke by Dave Stamey, Automobile by KALEO

Love And Heartbreak: have you really lived if you haven’t rocked out to Cowboy Take Me Away by the Dixie Chicks? No, you haven’t. You’ll also be happy to hear that I recall a poll that listed Cowboy Take Me Away as being the number one song every cowboy will sing along to on full blast whenever he’s alone. Anyway, there’s also Buddy by Willie Nelson, Crossing Muddy Waters by John Hiatt, Morning by Jim Ed Brown, Every Time I Hear That Song by Brandi Carlile, Gentle on My Mind by Glen Campbell, Kathleen by Townes Van Zandt. 

Experimental: if you’d like to get a little weird with it, I’d recommend The Gold is Deep by The Dead Tongues (which uses some really ambient reverb and a small church organ for a more psychedelic sound), or Familiarity by The Punch Brothers (which compositionally borrows a lot from modern classical chamber music with its rhythmic systems and pacing). 

There’s lots more we could get into here, like bluegrass, slow dancing music, spaghetti western soundtracks, and the fact that not all country pop-rock is bad, but I’ll stop myself here…. AHH JANUS' PLAYLIST LETS GOO

Not that anyone asked for my opinions

Okay so I'd like to start by saying that Thomas, Joan and Talyn did an amazing job on this playlist because every song fits Janus so perfectly.

Here are some of my thoughts on the songs and some interpretations I came up with or found on the internet.

Trigger Warnings - abortion. Mocking of religion.

Black Hole Sun - okay at first I was like 'wow this is really smooth and nice and the vocals are so sweet.' Then I heard the lyrics. "In disguises no one knows,

Hides the face, lies the snake". It's such a Deceit song and I imagine him dancing to it (with or without a partner).

It Seemed That Better Way - holy heck, can I point out that this song is such a bop? Leonard Cohen has such a soothing voice and it reminds me of Patrick Page (aha Hadestown) and if Janus wasn't played by Thomas, I could imagine this as his voice. The song is about not knowing what the truth is and what to believe, and has religious meanings which could be countering Patton and his Catholic beliefs.

Talking At The Same Time - it is immediately dark and that everything seems fake and a... Lie. A lot of Deceit's songs are about the truth or that everything is a lie and I have to give massive kudos to Thomas, Joan and Talyn because they did an excellent job portraying Janus through his music taste. The song describes how everyone talks at the same time, and what I interpret that as is that everyone says the same thing over and over. It's hard to explain so I'll let you make your own interpretations of it.

all the good girls go to hell - I'm not going to lie (ha) but I don't like Billie Eyelash, but I'll see past the artist. My first thought when I saw the song without hearing it is that it's a good choice and Janus probably loves Billie Eilish. Spotify has meanings of songs so I'm going to go off there: "This song is in the perspective of the Devil / no matter how good you are, desperate measures will eventually break you / turn you into bad." I feel like Deceit would sing this around the house. This song is twisting Christian symbolism and the lyrics can be interpreted as Eilish praising people who go to hell as it's better than being morally good. (Also, just switch Peter with Patton)

Denial - KDJIEKAKSNDENIAL? In Putting Others First, Janus is referred to as Denial and now this song? Everyone start clapping for Thomas and his team. Anyway, the song discusses themes of conflict within a relationship, and the denial and insecurity of being in a relationship near it’s end (source: Genius). Also, Roceit vibes?

Trust In Me - first of all, heck yeah! I predicted this song to be on his playlist because it's a slimy snake song from Disney? Hello this is Thomas? I think it's a great song and Johansson's voice is angelic. Kaa is manipulating and hypnotizing Mowgli, and if Deceit could do the same you can bet your bottom dollar he would sing this. We love our not-evil snake boi.

Razzle Dazzle - Janus singing this with Roman? Yes please? Okay so I get that this is a villian song, and I love that, but imagine Deceit in a shiny sequenced dress? I also haven't seen Chicago yet so I'm going off what I've heard - this song describes how it is too easy to put on a show and make the audience happy. Basically, acting is just professional lying. The line "Though you are stiffer than a girder they'll let you get away with murder" is so clever (no spoilers but he had it coming)

When The Chips Are Down - I hecking love Hadestown so you can bet I squealed when I saw this song. This song is sung by the fates, who are portrayed at untrustworthy. The title of this song is derived from the idiom “when the chips are down”, meaning “when a very serious and difficult situation arises”. Eurydice is in potentially one of the most serious and difficult situations she could be in: her life is at stake. After Hades invites Eurydice to come with him to Hadestown, the Fates appear and encourage her to consider his offer. They tell her that she should look after herself now that she is starving and the “chips are down”. (Source: Genius). In my own words, the fates are convincing (or manipulating if you will) a poor helpless girl to put herself first and save herself. It also mentions how if you be good to get into heaven,you get a knife in the back.

Mandy Goes to Med School - okay so this song is about abortion, so we'll have to go off context. Mandy (or Amanda Palmer) has to pay for Medical School by giving abortions in an alleyway with a coat hanger, so I interpret this as having to do shady stuff to get what you want. I think him and Remus would enjoy this song together. I'd also like to note that Logan had a song by Amanda Palmer in his playlist... That isn't relevant but I wanted to note that.

I Put A Spell On You - 50SOG vibes? I really like this song, it has a nice rhythm and the lyrics are so creepy. This gives me vibes of Deceit cornering/pining another side/love interest because if our baby boy wants to be happy, he should. This is similar to Trust In Me because it talks about enchanting someone to get what you want. "I don't care if you don't want me, I'm yours right now." Chills. Janus singing this song would complete my life.

This song has a nice beat and gives me TikTok vibes, but it also gives me Moceit vibes (I say vibes too much) because the singer is saying "you're a villain, a cad, a rascal... But I'm like a fish on a hook for you and I still want you." Also, she has a sweet tooth?

As Far As I Can See - all aboard the angst train, CHOO-CHOO "As far as I can see, nobody loves me. As far as I can tell, nobody loves you either" this song gives me such Roceit vibes because the meaning is pretty simple: if nobody loves Janus, then he'll take everyone down with him. I knew there would be that one song that tries to make me cry for our poor baby.

Criminal - first of all, the cover is beautiful. Apple describes the song as “a description of feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality.” She also told in an interview: "One of my friends said to me, “Oh yeah, of course you aren’t writing.” So I was like, “The next time you see me, I’m gonna have a new song.” I wrote “Criminal” in 45 minutes when everyone else went to lunch because I had to have a hit. I can force myself to do the work, but only if someone is right up behind me." Which is the level of pettiness I see in Deceit and I am here for it. The context of the song is seduction and manipulation, so Janus using his sexuality to manipulate the other Sides is a cursed thought.

Change - if any of them listened to Lana Del Rey, I sort of expected it to be Virgil. Change shows how Del Rey has matured, and I feel like it also portrays Janus' ability to adapt. "Change is a powerful thing... I'll be able to be honest..." Does this mean he's trying to change? Will we get more character development? LIGHT SIDE JANUS?

Devil In The Details - this song is about trusting the wrong person and taking advantage of something. "I am the first one I deceive if I can make myself believe the rest is easy.". More angst, yay.

Come Little Children - if you had a My Little Pony phase, you probably know this song. Come Little Children, also known as "Sarah's Theme" and "Garden of Magic," is a song sung by Sarah Sanderson in the film, Hocus Pocus to hypnotize children to lure them. Manipulation: a common theme.

Into The Unknown - I was really shocked to see this song until I realized, no, it wasn't the same iconic theme from Frozen 2. This short song is from Over The Garden Wall, a show Thomas watches but I have not. "If dreams can't come true, then why not pretend?" The show plays heavily on the battle between dreams and reality (source: Genius). The way I see this, Janus is convincing the Light Sides to do something, or specifically Roman to make his dreams come true through selfish means.

Yeehawgust Day Three: Pony Express

A/N: I am doing Yeehawgust this year as writing prompts (and I am VERY behind). While this is an RDR blog, this is ORIGINAL fiction. There is, obviously, a lot of inspiration draw from Red Dead as well as other Western games, movies, TV shows, and books that I love. Mostly in the names of characters. All characters, however, are my own. All prompts will follow the same group of characters.

“Let me have it!” Sophia screeched.

“Why, Sophie? It isn’t yours is it, Sophie?”

Mickery snatched the envelop from Len’s hand. “Why does he call you that anyway? All the time I known ya, no one’s ever called ya that.”

“Why dontcha go ask him? And give me that before you go.”

“Hey!” Andy’s voice boomed out, scaring all of them to stillness. They stared at him wide-eyed. Andy’s anger was not a fun thing to be on the business end of. “I thought I told you guys to leave that alone. It ain’t none a y’all’s.”

           Andy took the envelope from Mickey and laid it on the bed where he could see it as he buttoned up his shirt. MacKenzie had asked him to take it to the neighboring ranch. It surely wasn’t anything too important cause she didn’t even seal it. It was a large manila envelope and all she did was button it closed.

“I think it’s certainly my business,” Sophia interrupted.

“And just how’s that?”

“Well, it’s my ranch.”

           The boys laughed and Sophia stubbornly put her hands on her hips. Sometimes they all felt like they were children, merely pretending to be adults. Occasionally they would break character. This was one of those times.

“It’s your daddy’s ranch, Soph.”

           Andy did feel for Sophia. He really did. Things had been all laid out for her just the way she wanted up ‘til recently. Her sister came home from a cushy corporate law job and just waltzed right into Sophia’s job. Andy badly wanted to know why. Had Sophia done something in the almost year he had been gone to warrant her replacing? Was MacKenzie just that good at running ranches? He couldn’t see that.

           Andy wanted to ask Mr. Alder – and had it been a year ago, he might’ve. But things just didn’t quite feel the same anymore. This was still home, but it felt like the family had changed. Len and Sophia – and Mickey – they were really all he had left. The only things that had remained the same in that year. He wasn’t sure if that was good or bad.

“That’s Sophie,” Len teased, pulling Andy from his thoughts.

           He found himself lost in thought a lot recently. Reflecting on the changes he was seeing, on life, on definitively not being a young man anymore. He’d never felt older. At just 35. How pathetic. While the others argued on about Sophia and her new nickname, he thought about how he felt. Mentally. Physically. Spiritually. He didn’t know if he wanted to know.

           He buttoned up his shirt, put on his hat, and picked up the envelope. Paying no mind at all to his friends bickering behind him. He walked right on out, much to their shock. Was he even listening to them? No, no he was not. And ss he walked out of the house, he came face to face with another person he didn’t want to hear babble on about childish nonsense.

“Where ya goin’, Rockford? Runnin’ out on our race?”

Damn Ryan.

“No.”

“Well, it sure looks like you’re leavin’.’”

           Andy pushed passed him, not quite feeling like he owed him any sort of explanation. He knew he wasn’t handling all the changes well. Ryan was kind of his boss. But he had done nothing to cause Andy to show him any kind of respect. He was certainly not a leader.

           And Ryan was certainly not used to the lack of respect that Andy consistently showed him. Sure, he might’ve been an old hand, but he had been gone a long time and a lot of things had changed. He was going to have to be shown that things were much different now. He placed his hand firmly on Andy’s shoulder.

           Andy whirled around, face to face with Ryan. Both of the men felt angry and disrespected. It was an absolute recipe for disaster. Andy’s immediate urge to ball up his fist and punch Ryan directly in the face vouched for that.

“Ya wanna take your hand off ‘a me?”

“Ya wanna tell me where the hell you’re goin’?”

“No, I do not.”

           Ryan felt like he was at a crossroads here. If he let Andy get away with this disrespect, it would save a fight. A fight that could potentially land both of them in a lot of trouble with Hosea or Mr. Alder. But Andy would then always feel that he had a right to disrespect him. If he put him in his place, however –

“Let him go now.” His internal monologue was cut off by a feminine Southern voice. “I said now, Ryan.”

           MacKenzie Alder was her daddy’s eyes and ears on this ranch and she was out to prove she could do a better job of that than her sister. Two of their best workers killing each other would not lend itself to her favor. She was already at a disadvantage in that a lot of the older hands didn’t like her, especially Andy. They felt she had stolen the job from Sophia, even though she was immensely more qualified. Perhaps coming to Andy’s rescue would win her some point.

“Not that it is any of your business since Mr. Rockford is off the clock, but he’s running an errand for me. Taking some documents over to Green Rose.”

           Ryan looked at Andy a beat longer before letting him go and taking a step back. MacKenzie was a smart woman, she had to know that Andy had to be taught to respect more folks than just Sophia and those hands he hangs out with. They were not the ones in charge anymore.

“I expect no further issues from the two of you. Or both Hosea and my father will be informed, and that ends well for neither of you.”

           MacKenzie placed her hands on her hips – a power pose. She was in charge here. At least in this situation. No one else. Not her dad, not the foreman, and certainly not her sister. She called the shots. She wanted to get that message across loud and clear to these.

Ryan cursed. “Whatever, have a good ride, Mr. Pony Express.” And he stalked off into the house for God knows what.

           Andy looked at MacKenzie. In all the years he had worked here, he felt this was the first time he had really seen her. She looked similar to her sister in that they were both around the same height and blonde with light eyes. MacKenzie’s were a striking blue where Sophia’s were a deep green. They shared the same nose and same look on their faces when they were angry.

           But as Andy studied her closer, he realized the two could not be more different. Sophia was a cute girl-next-door type. Sweet and funny, she always looked like she belonged here. MacKenzie, on the other hand, did not. Even around the ranch, she wore dress clothes. Dresses, blazers, boots that you’d sooner see at a gala than in a pasture. She carried herself differently, too. At first, it seemed like she was more confident than her sister, but at closer look, she just expressed that confidence in her body language.

           Sophia was effortless, MacKenzie was all strategy. Andy reckoned both had their good and bad points. He just hoped she wasn’t expecting a thank you for coming to his aid. She didn’t seem to be. She just nodded at him, instructed him again to get that envelope to the neighbors, and then walked off into the house, as well.

           Andy could only ponder where that left him as he made his way toward the barn. He almost didn’t want to take his horse now after Ryan’s little

quip, but it was a faster route than the roads from this ranch to the next, so he saddled up anyway and headed off

I guess since we’re now about ten minutes out from the End of Steven Universe, I should maybe say some things into the void about what this show has meant to me and such. Can’t promise this will be any good because I’m not the Best with the words and stuff but I will make an Attempt.

I’ve been watching Steven Universe for a long time now. Maybe not right from the start but definitely from season 1 onward. I think I started in 2014 probably? So this show has been a part of my life for a good 6 years at least. I was a sophomore in college when I started watching this show, and now I’m in med school so that’s just crazy to think about! I don’t think I expected to be as invested in this show when I started as I ended up being. Heck, I remember when the fact that the Gems are aliens was a Big Reveal! Look at us now.

I think what really got me to love the show was how willing it was to make its characters Flawed while still being so optimistic at its core. I’d never seen any show do that before. To compare, at the time, I was also watching My Little Pony, which is of course a very optimistic show as well, albeit with a more cynical bent than previous iterations of MLP. I would probably put Steven Universe at a similar level of optimism. But as much as I love those ponies, they’re not as layered and as Flawed as the Gems are? They tend to have One Big Flaw or a Few Big Flaws that they need to work on and that’s it. And there’s a limit to how Bad the actions they do can be. Meanwhile with the Gems, they show some really Nasty aspects of themselves. Stuff like Pearl straight up letting Steven fall off a cliff and lashing out at him for Not Understanding Rose like she does, Amethyst shapeshifting into his dead mother, stuff like that. And the show doesn’t sugarcoat those actions or act like they’re not Awful Actions, but at the same time, it doesn’t condemn them as Irredeemable and shows that they can still grow from that. The show doesn’t make them Flawed in order to show the cynical notion of All Your Heroes And Guardians Are Secretly Terrible People, instead it does this to show a) trauma doesn’t always manifest itself in Pretty Sad Crying but instead in some pretty brutal and awful ways and b) if you’re willing to try, you can still recover and grow. And, I dunno, that really stuck with me. 

(Also I know the show has gotten a Lot of flak for redeeming all its antagonists, but honestly, I really dig that aspect of the show. I never understood the value of the power of compassion and communication in characters until this show because no other show I’d ever seen used them as the Primary Methods of Dealing With Your Enemies. The Heart/The Chick is not the one saving the day, after all, they’re the ones Keeping The Team Together, which is... important, don’t get me wrong, but Steven Universe-as-the-Heart is a whole different level of Important for Saving The Day. So, I dunno, call me cheesy or whatever, but there’s something really nice about how this show puts such value in compassion and reaching out to others that it can literally save the planet.)

I adore this show a lot, and I’m genuinely going to miss it when it’s over. It’s been such a big part of my life for so long that I know this finale is going to make me cry. I’m going to miss looking forward to new episodes and spending time in that world. I’m going to miss its optimism and its willingness to tackle such difficult lessons and messages. I’m going to miss the songs and the soundtrack. (I maintain that the Steven Universe soundtrack is my favorite animated show soundtrack. And I really hope the background music will be officially released eventually. It makes for such good studying music.) And most of all, I’m going to miss the characters that I’ve spent so much time with for the past six years.

But hey, at least the show will still be there for me to rewatch.

Goodbye, Steven Universe. And thank you for everything.

Planet 7 doesn’t really do open mics like the Wild Pony but it’s almost one and there are maybe six people here and the manager likes Forrest well enough, always has. As much as he was telling Alex the truth about it being fun pissing off the homophobic locals, the words in his notebook on the stool beside him that he’s too nervous to sit on are a little more vulnerable than he’d take the chance of any of them hearing.

He shouldn’t need the notebook. The words were in his head long before he wrote them down. He’d even waited longer than normal, because writing something down makes it real and sometimes making it real makes it hurt. He gave up on waiting when he realized it already hurt anyway. The upside of writing it down is once you make something real you can finally start to deal with it.

It’s not even about Alex. Alex and Guerin finally got their shit figured out, and that’s a good thing, and they’ve known each other forever so Forrest didn’t really have a chance to begin with. The song is about stupid fucking towns and stupid fucking families and how sometimes they take away things that you wouldn’t have given a shit about either way and sometimes they take away things that were just starting to look like they could’ve been really, really good. So it’s a little bit about being in the Wild Pony with Alex at the end of their first date. But that conversation didn’t create that situation, it just… helped Forrest hone in on what he wanted to say about it.

He’s not saying anything right now. He’s just up there with his old guitar, two weeks back from a far too long hiatus. That’s not helping his nerves. He whispers a sorry into the mic but it’s not like anyone is listening or, to be completely honest, cares.

He can’t do this.

Can’t sing his song, at least. There are a couple things he definitely can do. He can leave. He can go get another drink and then come back and try this again. He can calm the hell down. All wonderful options.

Instead, he looks down at his hands, which seem to have started plucking out something without his permission. He lets them continue until he remembers the name of the song and some of the lyrics. It’s from the fucking Hunger Games soundtrack. He starts to sing because there isn’t really anything else to do.

“And oh this too shall pass… this loneliness won’t last… for long…” And that’s where his knowledge of the lyrics ends. Fuck.

Some guy at one of the tables in the back pipes up. “Is that a cover?”

“Uh… yeah,” Forrest calls back.

“Do you want to use my phone to google the lyrics?” The guy offers, walking towards the makeshift stage area.

“Uh…” what the hell? “Thanks, but I’m good. I’m just gonna… go.” Forrest takes his guitar and picks up his notebook.

The guy doesn’t really move to stop him, but the look of disappointment on his face is almost enough. “Your voice is amazing. Seriously, though, what’s the name of the song? I wanna listen to it later.” He’s got glitter all down one side of his face. He probably got it from the guy who came in here a couple of hours ago with a bunch of the stuff and gave it away to anyone who wanted it, but it looked like everyone who had been there when that happened had already left with someone else. Which begged the question, why not this guy? To make matters worse, Forrest is absolutely positively sure he’s at least seen this guy around, but the name is completely escaping him, something that points to him being less sober than standing behind a mic woefully unprepared for and terrified of what he was trying to express made him feel.

“I’m Kyle, by the way.”

Of course. Valenti, surgical resident, sheriff’s son. Friends with Liz Ortecho and therefore probably Alex too. Lovely. That might be a little too much to know about someone he’s never met, but he deals with people the same way he deals with History. He’s always had this inner need to piece together the little details.

“Forrest Long.” He can see his last name giving Kyle pause, which would be a shame because Kyle is cute and also possibly the most earnest person Forrest has ever met in Roswell. Well, maybe besides… nope, Kyle. He’s talking to Kyle and definitely not thinking about anyone else. “Oh, and, uh… I was singing Gale Song, by The Lumineers.” Kyle actually pulls out his phone right there, looks the song up, and saves it. Then he gives Forrest a small smile.

“Hey! You two!” the bartender yells, “everyone else left so I’m closing early. Wrap it up, maybe?”

“It’s a nice night,” Forrest comments, “wanna head outside?” Kyle nods.

They sit in the bed of Forrest’s truck and talk in ten minute walls of information about things they’re passionate about (Lyudmila Pavlichenko for Forrest and Laparoscopies for Kyle) which then devolves into just making shit up to try and make each other laugh which then devolves into just laughing.

“Why are you so into history?” Kyle asks after a beat.

Forrest shrugs. “I mean, I grew up here. This town has nothing but history.”

“I disagree,” Kyle says. “It’s got… like… people.”

“Very astute observation. I guess… I wanted to find something that would let me deal with other people without actually having to, like, deal with them, you know? I used to get a lot of shit, growing up.”

Kyle gets quiet. “I… used to be like that.”

“You used to get bullied?”

Kyle shakes his head. “No, I, uh… I used to bully. One kid in particular. Our dads were best friends, and then we were best friends, and then… ninth grade, I wanted to fit in and he didn’t. That’s what I told myself for years, but the truth is… he liked guys, and I liked guys, and I couldn’t tell anyone. My family was awesome, I had more friends than he did, and I was just… scared. It was like everything was stacked against him, but it couldn’t shake him. I think… I wanted to be like him, but I didn’t know how to do that so instead I tried to make him like me. Ashamed.”

That’s not anything Forrest would’ve expected. He can understand it, sure. Shame makes people do fucked up things, especially kids. And Kyle does seem genuinely sorry. “Are you still in touch?”

Kyle nods. “I don’t know if we’re friends, but I’d like to be. He’s gotta be the strongest dude I’ve ever met.”

The sun is coming up and Forrest is falling asleep. It’s unlikely that either of them are safe to drive, so he calls a rideshare. They get to the Long farm first and Kyle gets out too. “Listen, Forrest,” he says. Forrest turns back around as Kyle gets closer until he’s right there. “I’m trying to be braver than I was in high school.” With that, he puts a hand on the side of Forrest’s face and kisses him slowly.

Forrest finds himself smiling into the kiss. When Kyle pulls away, he asks, “wanna come inside?”
