OH MY GOD. YES. OKAY. you just opened pandora’s box you have no clue. (btw most of this is based on my tattoo au although a lot of this stuff is just stuff i have connected to davey no matter the au)

okay. so. my davey is a high school english teacher and i think something that makes him really upset is when he sees his good students start skipping, not paying attention, etc. while i don’t think this would make him tick per say, i do think it would def make him anxious and on edge. he would absolutely come home and rant to jack about how he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong and how he’s worried about them and how he wishes he can do more but all he is an english teacher. (and jack would assure him that he’s doing more than enough and just being there and noticing these things is all some kids need) (but davey would def pull them aside in class and just talk to them like they’re humans bc he knows some teachers treat their students as children and they hate that. so he will just talk and try to pick their brains and help them in literally whatever way he can)

MUSIC. okay so davey definitely tries a TON of different genres simply because he is curious and he wants to hear it all. (he wants to experience every bit of life that he can and that includes different genres of music.) at the end of the day tho he’s a slut for sad queer indie pop: hozier, lucy dacus, and kevin atwater are his favs. (i could go on a whole different rant about how davey coded some of kevin atwater’s songs are but i’ll refrain for now.) he grew up listening to billy joel and still listens to him when he’s feeling particularly nostalgic or homesick. the album “the stranger” is one of his favorites in the entire world. his parents had it on record, and one year in middle school for his birthday he was gifted a record player, so he was playing that shit NONSTOP. to read to, to study to, to hangout to, etc. les used to come and sit in davey's room while he was doing domestic tasks, like cleaning or homework, so les now has attached that album to davey. (they get a tattoo for vienna, their fav song on the album—davey gets “slow down, you’re doing fine” on his left forearm and les gets “you can’t be everything you wanna be before your time” on his right forearm) (done by jack of course)

jack listens to more alternative stuff, and although it’s not something davey listens to on his own, he finds himself humming along to the pierce the veil and green day songs on jack’s playlist 

as far as hobbies and stuff, obviously he reads. he’s always been an avid reader because he loves to get lost in other worlds and he likes to learn about things that he otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to. he gets into reading slumps around midterms and finals because he’s grading sooooo many papers but like as SOON as that’s over he falls back into finishing a novel in a couple days and he absolutely loves it. it’s just so… refreshing in a way. (sometimes, when he’s particularly missing jack, he’ll go and just sit at the tattoo shop and read. he’s content to simply be in the same space with jack and he also loves sneaking glimpses of jack working.)

he also absolutely loves to cook. he grew up often helping his mother in the kitchen, so he’s sort of always loved it. once he moved out and began living by himself he found a whole new appreciation for it. it’s his way to decompress at the end of the day and … in a way food is his language?? like he will make meals based on what he’s feeling. if he’s really happy he doesn’t mind making something that takes a while. it’ll be bright and fresh. if he’s had a particularly rough day though, he’ll throw something frozen in the oven and call it a day. (over time, jack slowly realizes this, and can gauge what davey needs based on what he says they’re having for dinner. for example; if davey’s just making something frozen, jack will give him an extra long hug and force him to take a hot shower in order to relax. jack often takes over “cooking” on these days)

don’t even play on his animal crossing island. he likes the domestic video games with goals that he can take at any speed simply because they’re relaxing and cozy. he loves making his island all organized and pretty 

meanwhile jack is like begging for the switch to play mario kart

what made you wanna name the story non-violent communication?

Hiii, nonnie!! Thank you so much for the ask (and also, I'm sorry for the delayed reply! I took off tumblr yesterday)!! 🥰 Thank you for asking this question because I don't think I've ever talked about it before!!

Long story short:

THIS SONG RIGHT HERE!!!!!!!!! 🗣🗣🗣🗣 If you haven't listened to it, pls do!!😭It's one of Miguel's songs and has part of his dialogue at the end of the song before it transitions to "Givin' up (Not The One)" in the album!!! The transition is (in my humble opinion) ✨😭✨😭✨ !!!

If it has a million fans, I'm one of them. If it has one fan, I'm THAT FAN. If it has zero fans, it means I'm no longer on this Earth!!! 😤

This is my fav song from the album!! I'll explain why below the cut! I'm going to give a short (lol, I yapped too much, I gave a whole story time) explanation because I love this song sm 😭 so if you care to read a bit of an analysis on the songs, then proceed, if not, pls disregard the rest lol and thank you for sending this ask!!!

So I first heard the song a day or two before I posted the first chapter to NC, which was late July 2023. I watched the movie in June but I only listened to the songs that I really, really liked (I love all the songs but some a little more than others) that were included in the movie without listening to the full album, so I hadn't listened to this song because Miguel's songs (this one and "Givin' Up (Not The One)") are not included in the film. I only found out about "Givin' Up (Not The One)" because it was all over tiktok lol

So yeah, I listened to the song for the first time a day or two before the first chapter was posted and fun fact, the first chapter I posted for NC was actually nameless lmao!!😭😭 I didn’t know what to title it (I’ve always been bad with titles), so it was just a writing post with no title. I didn't think much of it either because my og plans were for the story to be like 3-4 chapters total (past me would've been shocked I'm still going with the story and that we're 249k ish words in just from the main parts of the story, not counting the one-shots lol).

As I mentioned, I hadn’t heard the entire album yet but after part 1 was posted, I sat down and FINALLY listened to the entire album to appreciate it (I've since then listened to the entire album like a hundred times (Metro Boomin was my #1 artist of 2023💀)) and once I listened to it in order, I immediately knew I wanted to title my fic Nonviolent Communication. 🥹❤️

When I heard both of Miguel’s songs right after the other it made something in my brain click.

I felt like it was so, so fitting for what I was trying to achieve with my story, even when I was planning to make the story like 4 chapters long lol.

So my explanation for connecting the song to my fic:

I'm probably going to sound crazy, or like someone who gave the song too much thought but hear me out.

In a way, I felt (and ofc everyone is going to find a different vibe, feeling, or meaning to a song but this was mine) like it was kind of ironic how "Nonviolent Communication" didn't receive much attention like his other song, "Givin' Up (Not The One)" did, which is more... out there (???). It's more like !!!! You know? Like the lyrics themselves and the production are more bold and strong, more “rough” for lack of a better word. Despite it not being in the film like "NC", everyone knows it! Everyone also knows Miguel's dialogue because of it, "But I'm not like the others..." and so on along with his little quote about "being Spider-Man is a sacrifice" at the end of the song.

Then, you have "Nonviolent Communication." It's the second song with the least plays on the album on Spotify (after "Nas" which is another one of my top fav songs from the album), and the lyrics and production are an entire different vibe from the other song!! It's so much more softer and vulnerable, even slower.

It still has themes of being Spider-Man but it's not so !!!! like the other song is. It's truly so much more vulnerable and soft, and even has romantic themes included. And at the end of the song we have another part of Miguel's dialogue, that's often disregarded, included, "I'm this dimension's one and only, Spider-Man... At least I was," which I'm always !!!! about because one, his tone for that part is much softer (almost sad), and two, I feel like him no longer being the only Spider-Man in his own dimension goes along with him not feeling like a true Spider-Man, and no longer having this one thing to himself that he can have in common with other spider members.

I could go on about this but this is already so long 😭 but anyway, I think that part is usually disregarded, much like Miguel’s soft side that we don’t get to see a lot of in the film. We’re given very little of soft Miguel and the majority is him being angry, stressed out, scared, and frustrated (rightfully so) with what’s happening.

So, hearing both songs, I felt like they represent two sides of Miguel. One that is more direct, bold, and rough, maybe even “violent.” It’s the side that’s most known to probably all the spider people and fans alike. Some people only see Miguel as an angry man that’s determined to protect the multiverse and sacrifice anything, since he’s already given up so much.

But then there’s the side of him less known (less seen), one that we didn’t see much of but that many of us picked up on. He has a soft side despite being through a lot, and has a lot of love and care to give. He’s a man that’s capable of having nonviolent communication, someone who can fall first, speak differently with someone when he’s alone with them, and be willing to do anything to “bring” that person “to the other place” - while still being Spider-Man and sticking to his duty that comes with such title but not sacrificing those very things.

So yeah, I heard the songs and it just clicked. “Nonviolent Communication” to me is the soft side of Miguel that we don’t get to see much in ATSV, but it’s still there. And so, I decided that it was the perfect title for my fic because of my interpretation of the song and my goal with the fic: show Miguel’s soft and vulnerable side that I so desperately hope we get to see more of in BTSV (I am begging the writers to do Miguel justice!!!!!!!).

I hope this made sense, maybe as I mentioned earlier, I’ve given too much thought to this (I’m an overthinker) but that’s my version and I love the song SO MUCHH!!! It was my most heard song in 2023, so I guess that says a lot :)

2. Album of the year?

It's not an album from this year, not even close, but Departure Songs by We Lost The Sea. It's one of my favourite albums of all time and one that I come back to very often. It helps ground me when I get too anxious and was a much needed source of comfort for a pretty rough year

3. Favourite musical artist/group you started listening to this year?

I mostly stuck to old favourites for this year so I don't really have a good answer for this one :((( (send me songs you think I'll like!!)

6. Episode of TV or webisode that defined the year for you?

Oof... it's gotta be Moonlight Chicken ep 7. Death, grief, community, support, love, carrying on.

7. Favourite actor of the year?

It's been a year of comfort rewatches for me so once again I'm going with an old favourite that I still stand by - Tatiana Maslany, my queen. In my eyes nobody will ever be able to beat her. If you haven't watched Orphan Black, add it to your list and WATCH IT, even if it's just for her - 90% of the show really is just her so it all works out

15. What's a bad habit you picked up this year?

You and @dribs-and-drabbles have yelled at me about it enough this year (with very good reason, ily you both, thank you for looking out for me 💖) to know that it's my complete disregard for sleep as a concept. I'm hoping to change that this year.

18. A memorable meal this year?

Two highlights!

The first is this espresso panna cotta, shared with my best friend in our favourite restaurant in the town we went to college in as our final meal before she left the country to pursue a PhD. So proud of her, miss her so so much 💖

The second I don't have a picture of, but I learnt how to make tom yum soup (thank you thai qls for the cravings!). Paired with some egg noodles, my ultimate comfort food for this year.

21. What's something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?

There has been a tray with about 8 different balls of yarn that has been a permanent fixture in a corner of my room for the past 2 years now - my temperature blanket from 2021. For some reason, it just seemed never ending and I had almost given up hope on it ever being a completed project. But I finally finished it about a month ago and have moved on to different projects. Now it's a cozy blanket that I can cuddle under (and scream into) while I watch my fav shows

(I typed this out listening to Departure Songs wrapped up in this blanket hehe)

Albania: I've seen many people ranking it low but I actually like it. By far not my fav but it's still good imo.

Armenia: I really like this one, added it to my playlist. And her live vocals are good, so that's nice.

Australia: Not my cup of tea tbh.

Austria: This song absolutely slaps, I love it. One of my favs this year

Azerbaijan: Also not my cup of tea but I still think it's a good song.

Belgium: At first, I wasn't a big fan but after listening to it from time to time I like it better.

Croatia: This one I really love. It's peak ESC. I wouldn't listen to it in my free time, but for esc it's perfect.

Cyprus: I kinda forget about that song most of the time. I mean it's good and stuff, but easy to forget, for me at least haha.

Czechia: Also one of my favs this year! Been listening to it since they won national selection. Sadly their staging and live vocals weren't that good at the pre parties but I'm hoping they'll improve.

Denmark: Not a fan of this style of song to be honest.

Estonia: It's a good song but not something I would listen to after ESC.

Finland: That is my favourite this year! I love this song so much and Käärijä is also such a sweetheart. It's crazy, it's party.

France: Probably an unpopular opinion but I liked their entry last year more. Song still slays.

Georgia: The lyrics don't really make sense but she can sing live, so that's a plus!

Iceland: She should have stuck with the Icelandic version imo. Would have liked that a lot more.

Isreal: I don't really get the hype? There is so much going on, idk.

Italy: I'm a sucker for the Italian language and the Italian entries the last few years so I'm a fan.

Latvia: A really good song. I hope they'll do well.

Malta: I don't know what to think of it. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I absolutely can't stand it haha.

Moldova: I love Pasha and I love this song. Moldova absolutely delivered and I hope he does well.

Netherlands: You can hear the influence Duncan had on it. It's okay.

Norway: I liked Jone a lot more but I think Alessandra was the best pick for Norway to get high in the rankings. The song is very catchy. Personally I've heard the song too much on TikTok already.

Portugal: At first, I didn't really care for it but with each listen I like it more.

Romania: Now that's a really unpopular opinion but I absolutely love this song. Theodor has an amazing voice for a 18 year old. Pls listen to his ESC medley, it's so good. I agree that the staging is bad but I heard he'll change it for the Semi, so I'm hoping people will see his potential.

San Marino: It's kinda catchy idk haha.

Serbia: The lyrics are very relatable lol. I'm not the biggest fan tho, still hope he does good, I love these kind of entries.

Slovenia: This one is sooo good. I was very sad when Slovenia didn't qualify last year for the final, so I'm hoping they'll do this year.

Spain: From what I've seen people either hate or love it, no in between. I love it.

Sweden: Sorry to all the Loreen stans but I have a problem with her: I don't understand what she's singing. It got better with Tattoo since Euphoria, but it's still so muffled to me .

Switzerland: Nah, don't like it.

Ukraine: I really like this one, especially the revamp with the Ukrainian parts in it.

UK: Too generic for me. But it did get stuck in my head so it did it's job haha.

hm. looking around my room now. If someone came in I think they’d see that I have an affinity for the color green (pale green bed spread, plant) that I love to read (books on the desk, books on a shelf, books on the side table), that I’m enemies with The Big Light (lamps! Candles!), that I like music and play the guitar (but if they took a closer look at it from its place mounted on my wall, the thin layer of dust would tell them I don’t play very often) and that I’m a hoarder collector of trinkets 😇

Closer by Teagan and Sara. Rediscovered it during finals season. I remember feeling so beat. Was sitting on my bed with an insanely large glass of iced coffee, staring down my desk trying to find the will to get back to studying, when this song came on my headphones. This song + the (probably unhealthy) caffeine high gave me a crazy amount of energy and the kick to get back to work. Not sure how much of it still being on my Repeat playlist is from me continuing to play it occasionally now…and how much of it is just from me listening to it on REPEAT for the rest of finals season. So um. Yeah 😅. When I think of this song I think of cardiac arrest by coffee and flash cards lol.

Gifts don’t have to be big and showy to be cherished by me. I once told a story about making bracelets as a kid to my friend and the next time I saw her she gave me one she had made for me herself. I never take it off! A friend once noticed I was having a really rough day and pulled out a little sun sticker from their purse. I still keep it in my phone case! I have a friend who always brings over extras from the batches of cookies they make and it always makes my heart so happy cause!! They thought of me!! How sweet!! My fav gifts are the things that show a person listens or cares 🫶

sadly, I don't own any merch yet because im too overwhelmed by everything already and there are so many content of the groups I like that I need to go through first. Like, believe it or not, I'm still watching (and rewatching) Run BTS 😂

I'm also very lucky to have two amazing close friends (ONE OF THEM IS ALSO AN ATINY!!!!!) who love , and who also had a hand in getting me into K-pop but they don't have blogs dedicated to their favs haha nonetheless, it is very nice knowing that I can always vent to them and that we can always jam to K-pop when we're together. My sisters tolerate it and I think they are slowly starting to like it, they just don't wanna admit it yet😂😂
