What’s your favorite thing about season 3a of Teen Wolf and why?

The tl;dr answer is almost everything.

Let's start with Tattoo- I love the way the episode sets everything up. I've mentioned it in rewatch before but I really want to explore the use of the word "ephemeral" in Tattoo. From exploring Scott's break up with Allison, to his tattoo not lasting, to the way he uses the word, even to the idea that Scott's status as a beta is ephemeral, even at this point in the series. I love the scene with Stiles and Derek holding Scott down to blowtorch his arm. I LOVE the way it opens with fucking BRAEDEN rescuing Isaac on a motorcycle.

I love the introduction of Deucalion. I love and adore the meet-cute in the elevator. Please enjoy @spikeface's brilliant fic: a certain potential for a fascinating glimpse of Deucalion's POV in that scene.

I love that Scott is Isaac's werewolf contact. I love the tension as the alpha pack stalks Braeden (I would be mad about how this ended, except she comes back) and their intro. I love the tension between Allison, Lydia, and Derek. It's a very well-done episode and definitely sets up a fantastic season so well.

Chaos Rising introduces Heather, who is friends with Danielle from Party Guessed. I was excited. We get the vault rescue, and there's some fun Steter banter. "No, you idiot, I live in a condo downtown, will forever be a favorite moment. The vault rescue! Scott's look at the end is A FAVORED moment, the blood on the chin? I cannot.

Then, we move on to Fireflies. I am weak for Scott saving those kids in the beginning, for the tension between him and Allison, and for the introduction of Cora! And then they are working with Chris. Who is still pointing a gun at Scott, but Scott is so soft and accepting of it. "I get that," he says. 🥺 Then they do a rescue! And Jennifer is there! And Derek is so worried about hurting her. Unfortunate. (When I was first watching, I leaned over to @illbeintheend and was like, "Tell me she's evil?" :D ) I think my favorite bit of Unleashed is when they pull the motorcycle swap on the twins. That is like PEAK supernatural teenager shenanigans to me. And they deserved more lower stakes (not that the twins are entirely low-stakes) shenans, overall. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE that Allison knows so much about motorcycles. Scallison motorcycle trip whenst?

Frayed. Frayed. FRAYED. BELOVED. I love so much about this episode. The sciles! the scallison! more truedemon in the elevator? and then on an escalator!! the scerek! the scisaac! BOYDDD. That moment where Scott is like "Well, I do," when Boyd doesn't care what happens to himself? Gyahhh. I CANNOT. And the the fight scene? Is SO good? Despite them having forgotten about light bulbs by 3a I find that to be one of the best choreographed fight scenes in the show. The Coach of it all? Ofc he's not gonna let them stop for a bathroom break, SIT DOWN BILINSKI. I love Frayed. AND THEN WE GET MOTEL CALIFORNIA RIGHT AFTER?? Lydia's arc in this is SOOO good. The Allison and Lydia moment where Allison is just "I believe you" and Lydia is so touched and clearly bolstered, it's one of the reasons I head canon she's had access to her powers her entire life. It's just now that people believe her about them. The Isaac and Ethan character moments? LEARNING ABOUT ALICIA (GREAT BUT OMG SHOOOOWWWW WHY IS THIS ALL WE GET???). Boyd. Cry!!! And THEN. The angst of the parking light scene at the end. I tear up still watching it. (Tbf I cry real easy.) Currents. I love Currents for the metronome scene and the way it highlights Boyd's intelligence. He has one of the best plans. And then the way it ends? That hurts me. Proto-alpha Scott almost rescuing Deaton? Bbbb. I have mixed feelings about Visionary. The Paige arc is devastating. Read my own excellent fic (i just) died in your arms for a look at my thoughts on her and Derek. I love the glimpse of pre-canon and Deucalion's backstory. I find the "unreliable narrator" bit to be a touch heavy-handed, but it's grown on me after many watched for fics.

The Girl Who Knew Too Much and The Overlooked. GYHAHHHH! I love so much about these. The scydia hand hold moment. "For someone like you to help" she says to Scott and I MELT. The big orchestra crescendo! The death of Deputy Tara and the little hints at her relationship with Stiles? The way Derek absolutely believes Scott and Stiles about Jennifer and her utter shock but quick turnaround?

The elevator scene! It's so silly and SO GREAT. I love it so much, okay. Deucalion manipulating events? The desperation as Stiles and Scott try and rescue their parents? Listen, these episodes are also so good. And then we have Scott going with Deucalion at the end of the episode. The way he has no idea what to do. He's just a lost kid, in so far over his head. And his mom and Stile's dad are missing and his (pretty damn good, too) English teacher is evil and there is Deucalion. And he has no choice and maybe he was right in that motel parking lot, it certainly feels like there's no help.

Then Alpha Pact happens. Then we get to Lunar Eclipse. And I just. The ice baths?? I have spent so much time wondering how Deaton, Isaac, and Lydia felt sitting there. Waiting. For hours. Lydia desperately holding back her screams for Allison, Scott and Stiles. Also, they all look so gooood in black. The Nemeton! The matching tattoos! The way it brings everything together to s1. The scalisaac moment with Rafael? Priceless. Love Kalia and Jennifer's showdown. It looks so cool, first of all. But there is a moment, where you think, just maybe Kali might NOT double down. And then the glass shards fly.

The bit where Deucalion is "brother against brother, how very American," cracks me up, every watch. And then he roars and tries to force Scott to kill and well, then we have an Eclipse. AND THEN AND THEN AND THEN we get the true alpha moment we've been building to since Scott threw off Peter's control in s1 and chose his own pack over Derek's in s2. That moment is so good.

This is my contribution for the ABBA drabble challenge hosted by @freelancearsonist. I was given Joel and Why Did It Have To Be Me (such a good song; I've been more than happy to have it stuck in my head the last couple weeks lol). I almost took the route of writing a pre-series contractor!Joel/lonely housewife!OFC affair, and it was such a delicious idea that I still might write that one at some point, but ultimately I am just too married to Joel/Tess so I ended up with yet another angsty post-1x02 drabble for them instead.

He doesn’t regret her.

But he finds himself thinking: if she hadn’t loved him so much, maybe this would hurt less. If she had taken his advice when they first met and left him alone and flirted with Tommy instead—chosen a man less broken, with a wall around his heart that wasn’t built quite so high—maybe it wouldn’t have ended this way.

There were things he could never give her and they both knew it.

“My brother’s over there,” he’d told her, that first night. “He’s better company.”

She’d looked at him—the scar on his face still healing, the roots of his hair that had started coming in grey almost overnight, pigment shocked away with grief after Sarah.

After.

She had taken in his dry hands and hollow face and unwashed clothes and she’d seen something in him she still wanted to get to know.

“I’ll take my chances,” she’d said.

She was always beautiful. Long-haired and pretty and lonely. Kind when she wanted to be, which wasn’t always, not even with him. But there was a warmth inside her he could feel, even then, strangers two feet apart.

She’d sat by him, and he’d let her, and she’d stayed there ever since. He’d let her and he’d let her and he’d let her.

He thinks of that first night for the first time in a long time and feels a selfish kind of anger, wishing she would have just listened to him when he tried to warn her away.

She’d taken her chances on him, bet on a sure loss, and he still isn’t sure why.

okay so i mentioned my little marvel insanity to @that-one-i-think but i never elaborated, soy:

most of my thoughts are post-endgame, but some are obviously pre-endgame. Like a black-widow trilogy, not having the Jewish-Roma characters join a Nazi organisation, and so forth.

But i'll focus on post-endgame for now.

For one, I don't think it should've been a MULTIVERSE saga. It feels really soon to hop from 'oh yeah magical stones' to 'theres sooo many fucking universes bro what the fuuuuck' without proper set-up. Y'know what was set-up, though?

time. WHICH IS DIFFERENT.

Firstly, Time travel was introduced in Endgame - no better way to set up future projects than to introduce the core of it at the end of the initial run. Especially because Endgame was not even the first occasion of time-fuckery, Antman played with it and it was even brought up in infinity War with Dr Strange saying there is only one way the fight with Thanos will end well. Even if Time Travel was only a subsidiary of the Infinity Saga, time itself is established enough to create a somewhat seamless transition into the next saga.

Not only that, but the concept for the Multiverse Saga is clearly to replace the OG avengers with the Young Avengers, who band together as a team because of time travel, to stop KANG, THE TIME TRAVEL MAN.

My ideas for Sagas are typically to focus, mostly, on either building up storylines/characters for a Big Movie, or introducing characters that are thematically relevant. soooo

Also, ideally, there wouldn't be series back-to-back-to-back. I understand why this was done in the context of Covid, but this is an isolated reality in my mind where real world bullshit doesn't matter. I think having shows more separated would help with preventing any fatigue.

im only gonna focus on P4 for now, just bc there's a lot to say.

Phase 4, I'm vibing with the... Legacy of it all. Not so much introducing the legacy characters themselves, but centring the characters they originated from, or originally emulate in the YA. I also want Grief to be a big thing. Because i can.

I think Wandavision works as a first project. It was kind of a sweet start, and after Endgame it was nice to start off slow, isolated. Wandavision plays around with Sitcoms Through Time, and whilst not directly linked to Time Travel, fits in thematically. Plus, using Fox Quicksilver as a cameo was neat, since he's not only a flash to the past (from a movie trilogy retconning the original trilogy via time travel), but speedsters always toe the line when it comes to their relationship with time.

(Introduces, of course, the twins)

Then, a Hawkeye movie, null Kate. Mostly because of how i want to set up the YA. I think Clint did deserve his own project, dedicated to HIM. A later Hawkeye series following both him and Kate would be cute, but for now... let's just keep it sweet and simple. Perhaps trying to clean up after his mistakes whilst having to face-off against Yelena. Eventually I want these two to come to an understanding, they both lost Nat, and they'll always be tied through her despite their distaste for each other. I think the humour could be fun. Since it would have a street-level, gang-fighting centre, we could also begin to introduce the kingpin/Eleanor stuff as a bit of a sneakpeek. I love street-level stuff ngl.

(i would also put the Gotg christmas special around this time. bc. christmas)

And then we allow ourselves another series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Again, more street-level, more calm. After Endgame I don't wanna dive straight into drama. similar to what i kinda want with Hawkeye, i need there to be actual on-screen consequences for the gaping power vacuum left behind, both crime-wise and politically. Not just 'everyone was fucked over by the blip', but 'now the Avengers are gone people feel like they can do anything - who is gonna stop them?' I would need to rewatch it to state any changes. Maybe keep Bucky's long hair... hm.

(Eli would still feature in Isaiah's scenes. The legacy connection is established that way - Eli is Isaiah's legacy very explicitly in the comics. He does not do what he does to continue from Steve, or Sam, but his grandfather.)

And as much as I wanna not have too many series back-to-back, there are SO many. So, She-Hulk. Except screw all the like weird stuff they retconned as part of the ending. I want it to be a work-place comedy. of course with the set-up to Jen being a hulk and stuff, and superhero stuff on the side. Just have more of an emphasis on the little cameo characters she is a lawyer for, because... Sokovia accords would still be a thing. I hate that they just brushed it aside, if they happen, THEY HAPPEN, until something changes that fact. And i think Jen working to defend the innocence of people like her, and rallying for change in the accords, would be really neat. Especially since she's a Hulk, who are notoriously deemed dangerous for what they are. I think it would just be a little symbolic. This would not be entirely about Jen's grief, but moreso other people's, with the lives theyve lost and are losing due to discriminatory laws against supes.

She IS the Legacy, but i think it would be a nice moment for Teddy later on stating that it's people like Jen who make the world a better place for all superheroes, especially the big green ones. Even if he's not technically a Hulk.

From the fun and camp of She-Hulk, straight into a Super Gay Space film with the Space Lesbian, Carol Danvers. Another Captain Marvel solo (forgor to mention, OG mar-vell is a dude for YA reasons), but i still need to find a comic i would want them to adapt. HOWEVER, I do want her to find out about/mention the Impossible Prophecy, and the affair between Mar-Vell and the Princess Anelle. Because... Actually Setting up Teddy properly. This... I feel like will be kinda dramatic for being a space movie, but I don't want it to be too major. Maybe her vs the Supreme Intelligence, with a sprinkle of her being angry the whole time because her wife (Maria) is dead and she doesn't have healthy coping mechanisms.

Then, the Big Drama movie, Thor Love and Thunder. Because we gotta feature more of Carol's next lover, Valkyrie. I was kinda bummed by this movie. It is already a lot about grief, but I think it skims over Thor's grief for his family and friends rather quickly. More emphasis on Gor, obviously, because somehow this movie managed to have a cool concept and FUMBLE. Throw in some references to Gaia, especially regarding thor, because i liked when that was a thing in comics.

(Thor is who Billy emulates as a young supe, so... still in-legacy theme)

No Cassie, because... Ant-man is important later for my plotting.

We kick it all off with Loki. for obvious reasons. Gotta bracket the phase with saga-relevant content.

not only sets up Kid-Loki, but Kang, and thus Nate.

bc im super smart.

Obviously this cuts out a lot of projects, but the recent Phases are doing so much I think a trim is required.

im also just scared to touch No Way Home because. uh. we can't leave it too long, and it was a really good movie, but... this is about Time Travel broo... idk

The last bullet points sounds intense. Johnny said he would help get the reader out of a toxic situation but then ghosted them? If I wrote this, I'd probably change some stuff about it if that was okay. Like maybe the reader is in a toxic situation that Johnny tries to help him out of, but then realizes he doesn't have the power to help him? I couldn't really see Johnny ghosting him, more so he ends the relationship (or whatever it is that they have) because he feels like he can't be what the reader needs.

I love love love your Finnick/Annie series!! I was reading the last chapter wondering how you could end it and it was so well done.

I’m kinda wondering on what your thoughts are on what happens to Annie after? Cause you touched on the idea of the capitol kind of exaggerating the whole “mad girl” persona for her so it would be so eye opening to find out that (pre-mockingjay of course) she wasn’t as crazy as everyone thought and they kept up that persona to keep her away from the capitol. But I could also see where as worse things were happening, especially when you get to the hunger games and catching fire, that would be tough and kind of lead to a downfall there? And then she would eventually get to how we meet her in the series.

Hopefully this makes sense! Basically I’m just fathoming the connection between what you wrote and the series we know and love. I just think Annie is such an interesting character that isn’t talked about a lot other than the fact that Finnick loved her.

i kind of think two things — so first, in terms of playing up the mad girl persona, i absolutely subscribe to that belief lol. in my story what i kind of alluded to is that i think finnick plays a role in playing up the mad girl thing to protect/save her from going through what he went through. and it works obviously which is why peeta buys into it in catching fire.

and then second, i really combed over the books for any annie moments and i think it’s significant that we actually only meet her AFTER she’s rescued from the capitol. so like, we truly meet her at her absolute lowest, and EVEN SO the only thing katniss says is that she’s, like, kind of odd and laughs in strange places in conversations. so all that is to say my interpretation is that she’s not actually all that “mad” — she’s traumatized of course but when we do finally actually meet her she’s dealing w the horror of whatever happened in the capitol, so i imagined a pre-capitol annie as being even less “mad” than her couple of lines in the books.

so i guess thats a long winded way of saying i kind of wrote it (and imagine it) to be both that they play up the mad girl persona to protect her from getting the finnick/johanna/haymitch treatment and ALSO that whatever happens to her in the capitol sends her into an even worse place that gives us the person we meet in mockingjay.

but that’s just me!!!! and ofc that’s also kind of specific to the one story i chose to tell — i can imagine a thousand other backstories and other paths for her. i think that’s why i found this to be such an interesting story to write, bc her and finnick have much less clearly defined stories as opposed to katniss and peeta, so there was a lot more to play around with and invent there.

Hello! I really loved “the Runaway”! I love the way you write the Seeds dynamic with each other. I think because we never really get all three brothers (much less Faith) interacting with each other together in game that I am always so hungry for writing of them and how they function! Was wondering a few things: 1. Do you plan on making this a series/will we see a continuation of Callie’s story at all? Especially pre-reaping or what happens during the collapse with her? 2. Any more plans to write more of the Seed bros dynamic together? 3. Maybe I missed it (I’ve only read the Runaway once through fully so far) but how old is Callie at the time? I got the vibe she was like 14 but I could be way off! 😆 Anyway your writing is wonderful and have a lovely day! 💖

1) I definitely wanted to leave the door open to write some sort of a continuation. I do have a little bit of a plan to write another fic and yeah one starting just before the game - I have one specific scene in mind just to get the warning bells ringing for Callie - and then afterwards leading into the reaping. I wanted to allude to a few more things that I have in mind for her during the reaping in the runaway but I cut it since I thought it was a bit silly to introduce it when I wasn't entirely certain I was going to write more - I don't like to leave things a bit too unfinished. But I'm definitely encouraged to write more now that I know someone wants to read more <3 <3 Before Rook reunites with her, I intend for Callie to end up in the disturbingly?! competent care of Sharky asdfghj

2) Always! I also really think that it was sad how little we see the brothers and Faith interact during the game, so I like to try and show them interacting when I can. I'd definitely like to write more of their dynamic tbh, but I don't really have any ideas about what to write for a fic that's more Seed bro centric. I think having someone like Callie getting thrown into the mix was fun for me in that sort of regard since it helps me think about how each family member would react to her and that could help frame how I would write them together: Jacob obviously taking his new role seriously etc. Joseph seeing her as a sign from god -and personally I also really liked mentioning that Joseph saw the Jacob he remembers from childhood in Callie. John being eagerly curious about her and honestly I would like to explore his relationship with her a bit more too since I have ideas about how he'd take the uncle role Very Seriously asdfgh. And also alluding to Faith being - understandably I think - quite threatened by a female biological member of the Seeds appearing, since then what if Joseph decides he doesn't need her anymore, since now he has a niece? What if he decides the niece fits the role of Faith better than she does? what then, what does that mean for her? Now realistically, I don't think Joseph would ever entertain the thought of Callie becoming a Faith, nor would Jacob - or even John tbh - allow it even if he did. But Faith is ofc in a very tenuous position and has to be hyper vigilant of any changes and potential threats to her situation. And well, during the Reaping, it would be all too easy for her to ensure an Accident happened if Callie were to wander into her region.

3) My plan for Callie when I first made her back in 2019 was that she'd be about 12 when the Collapse came, but writing the runaway, I definitely was writing her probably a year or two older. I didn't have a specific age in mind, but I was definitely thinking around the 13-15 mark. So I'm glad that was the vibe you picked up on haha!

"Rascal Does Not Dream" Double Feature review-ish thoughts

I attended the North American "Rascal Does Not Dream" double feature (subtitled edition) yesterday on March 24th. This was one of those Fathom Event things, and it served as the official North American premiere for both Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. At 73 minutes apiece, they're pretty damn short for movies... but I've seen even shorter in the anime world, weirdly enough. These would be the second and third movies after the "Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai" 12-episode series and its first movie sequel, 2019's Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl.

If you're completely unaware of this series, I implore you to ignore its admittedly awful titling convention. This is all based on a set of Japanese novels revolving around teenage (ofc) protagonists Sakuta Azusagawa and Mai Sakurajima as they contend with the bizare phenomenon that's come to be called "Puberty Syndrome" (sometimes called "Adolescence Syndrome"), in which the emotions of teenagers/pre-teens/young adults are able to somehow affect reality via quirks of theoretical quantum physics. So in this world, if someone wishes they could redo a bad experience? They might start looping said experience ala Groundhog Day. If someone feels two sides of their personality are diametrically opposed? They could literally split into two separate versions of themselves. Only somehow resolving the underlying issue can fix these bizarre sci-fi events.

The first four arcs of the TV series could be described as "A boy is made to understand and empathize with how hard it is to grow up female." After that, starting with the final arc of the TV series and up through these movies, you could describe the story as "A boy is made to understand and empathize with people who struggle with disabilities." I have tons of respect for how the series is basically all about trying to provide deeper understanding/sympathy for everyone around us.

I'm an anime-only plebe who hasn't read the books these are based on or the manga adaption, so that obviously will affect my view of the story. With that said...

Sister Venturing Out is basically the emotional sequel to the TV series' final arc, the "Sister Home Alone" story. That one contains an emotional sequence that has made me cry on MULTIPLE viewings, which I consider to be some of the highest possible praise. I have to say that Sister Venturing Out has a similarly devastating scene that flips the script on what was so painful in "Sister Home Alone" and effectively shows the pain of the OPPOSITE side of the relationship. So: major props. It's a slow-build sort of tale without the tension inherent to some of the franchise's arcs — the central gimmick of "Puberty Syndrome" barely plays a role here — but it works well at delivering on emotional payoffs and character moments. I previously felt that "Sister Home Alone" was the most emotionally intense story in the series, but Sister Venturing Out is an easy rival to it.

Knapsack Kid, on the other hand, is all about Puberty Syndrome business and the suspense of how to resolve it. Unfortunately, I don't think it works nearly as well as Sister Venturing Out because it's so clearly in need of a longer runtime to flesh out its ideas. As the story stands here, the existence of the titular "Knapsack Kid" is never even remotely explained! Series fans know that we usually expect Rio Futaba to provide some kind of quantum theory that suits the weirdness occuring, but Rio only shows up long enough to vaguely hand-wave the reality-warping shenanigans at play. Nobody ever provides any justification for why Sakuta is being guided by an all-knowing childhood version of his girlfriend. How does she know so much about what's happening? How can she jump between... realities or timelines or whatever she's doing? Why her, and more importantly, why her as a child? Shouldn’t the CHILD version of Mai know LESS about this stuff? Normally, the series would have fun explaining this; here, they want us to stop thinking and just feel it. And admittedly, the emotional moments are still pretty strong. I just think I would've felt them harder if I understood more about how and why this was all happening.

Although the series has always had its emotional moments in each story arc, the fact that these two stories have so little room to breathe means we lose out on a lot of the humor and witty dialogue that the TV series managed. There's still some of it in here; it's just not as common because we don't really have much time to spare onn comedy.

We do, however, seem to have time to spare on setting up future stories! Two plot threads are set up that do not pay off in these films but instead are events for the upcoming "University Arc." A little tease at the end of the second movie (after the post-credits scene; don't miss out on that) says that "Animation Production is Confirmed" for the University Arc — whatever the hell that means. A new TV season? There are four books so far in the "University Arc," so that seems possible. A bunch more movies? It definitely implies something longer than just one additional film. Whatever this turns out to be, I look forward to it.

Helene Route Thoughts

Ohhh ok, sooo sorry for the ask I got a lil too excited about this scenario for the comments section 😅

So, first of all, as a serial lurker and consumer of IF... I've noticed a trend (not the first person to notice/comment on this btw) of fans getting... kinda demanding & entitled regarding the work that IF authors are producing these days. I wanna say up front that I adore what I've seen of your IF concept so far, and also- even if I didn't already love it? Please don't let us fans or anyone else pressure you in any way/shape/form into deviating from the story YOU want to tell! (Like y'all go to a book store & write a nastygram to a published author bc the synopsis doesn't press all your buttons...? Why the hell would you do that to someone who's publishing amazing IF content, often for free!? Who raised you!?)

With that outta the way- personally I'm perfectly OK with Helene being the stereotypical 'White Lotus' of manhua fame- man we love tropes for a reason, why wouldn't I want to see that story play out in IF form?!

If you really want to explore her potential as an RO tho? I can think of 2 different Helene flavors that I would personally find compelling...

First is one I have observed in manhua before, if rarely (and it's killing me that I can't recall the character/series I'm thinking of...) Helene is basically groomed/raised to fulfill her roll of bagging a prince or other high ranking individual for her religious institution's prestige/power. This is the only thing she's been raised to think she's suited or useful for, a power grab. Maybe MC can show her how amazing she is and the power she wields personally outside of the church's influence over her fate? Empower Helene to pursue her own desires! Poor girl never knew how to want for anything... until she met MC... 👀

The other thought I had is totally the opposite end of the spectrum... A Girl Boss that wants power & influence, and doesn't care much about the collateral damage in achieving that. Like, path of least resistance, I'ma play every dudes fantasy & become the perfect woman to get the power of this dim-wit prince. Once she's won, she starts looking around thinking... ok this mask is kinda stifling, how long after marriage should I wait b4 I poison this guy? Meanwhile, she meets MC and... surprise! She has a competency kink! Suddenly... a celebrated, wealthy dukedom has most of what she's after anyways, without some of the schmoozing & red tape associated with the top of the monarchy... 'Ok, changed my mind, I want THAT ONE instead! For world domination purposes ofc' (In my head this Helene is def a bit of a red flag character)

These are just a couple thoughts from someone who's already in love with the universe you're creating 😊 I'm really excited to see where your story takes us, with or without any changes to the already established ROs!

Probably Donuts & Coffee 9: Tell Me It’s the Real Thing; it ends on a cliffhanger, Ellie is heartbroken, scared, and leaving Joel, while Joel is also heartbroken that Ellie is leaving and unsure of what’s going to happen between them. I left my poor cubs hanging with that one.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Although it is my most angsty fic, I think Every Night Has Its Dawn has the happiest, most satisfying ending. Everyone is “living at the end of the world” - hence the series title, lol - and Joel & Ellie get their happy ending (as it always should be)

8. do you get hate on fics?

Surprisingly, no. I’ve had a couple “if you wrote for another ship, more people would like you” comments, and also one “I really want to hate you, but you’re so nice” which still makes me laugh. Antis hate to admit that even those of us who write taboo fiction are still people, god forbid. We just have wild, deviant imaginations

No, I don’t think I would play nice in the sandbox. Plus, I have so many ideas, I’m not sure they would mesh with other writers’ ideas.

😗<this is me doing a low whistle. That’s tough. My first ship was Mulder/Scully so they have a special place in my heart. I spent a lot of time doing text-based RPG, so I jumped around with ships. Joel/Ellie is my first ship in such a long time, I think they’re gonna be with me for a long time.

15. what's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The original Learning to Walk; it featured Joel and an OFC, so that’s never gonna happen. I took various pieces from the draft I had and worked it into other stories, so it’s been picked apart. I also started an AU that starts pre-outbreak with Ellie as a friend of Sarah’s then progresses through the 20 years following with Joel and Ellie being brought together and torn apart over time; I’ve taken a lot of elements from it and worked it into my Boston AU so the original won’t be finished.

16. what are your writing strengths?

I love writing dialogue - so much so that sometimes Joel just needs to shut up.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Action, having characters involved in fights or physical action. I also struggle with writing scenes for side-characters; l these days if it doesn’t involve Joel and Ellie I’m like, “omg is this over yet?”

18. thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I have not done it, props to writers who can read/write multiple languages. If I was going to do it, I would be afraid that Google translate would botch the infliction. I would probably italicize it and describe the character as speaking in another language.

19. first fandom you wrote in?

The X-Files; so long ago that there were independent sites for writers, you had to post all over the place and let people link you work to get it seen. Comments/kudos and feedback were hard to come by. I was there when ff.net came online and at the time it was revolutionary. When the purge(s) happened and ao3 came online, it was a leap forward for writers. My works are scattered across the universe of the web.

20. favorite fic you've written?

It’s like Sophie’s Choice omg. It’s probably Why Can’t I Just Tell You (That I Care) because it was supposed to be a fluffy one-shot set in Jackson - the scene where Joel comes to Ellie’s apartment in eighteen (part 1) - and it featured flashbacks of the times the two of them had been flirting with each other over the years - which became sixteen and seventeen and the series is now over 100k words. For me, it’s an incredible adventure for the two of them, fluff, angst, heartbreak, action, my first time writing spice - it was a labor of love.

i don't even know how to begin writing this. i just stopped crying after reading the last chapter of texas sun, i even had to hug myself to try and calm myself down, that's how great the ending was. from the first time i stumbled upon your series i could tell that i loved your writing, but after finishing it i can say that i was wrong, i don't just love it, i adore it! all the details you've put in, the way you portrayed all these emotions and characters and their actions, how you built all these dynamics between them.. i can't even find the words to describe how this series has made me feel, all the pain and anguish but also the joy and comfort you have given to all of us who read this fic that you've written so perfectly, that sometimes had me awake contemplating about what would happen next. i still sometimes read the pre-outbreak chapters and my heart aches because so many questions starting with "what if.." come to my mind, never ever in my life have i experienced this with a series. i don't know how to express all the emotions i'm feeling right now, i'm sure hoping to see some more short stories about reader and joel, ofc if you're still interested in writing about them. this isn't the first time i'm writing to you trying to express my gratitude for your writing, so once again i want to thank you for taking the time to write this series!! <3 also, when reading this please keep in mind that i just had a nasty mental breakdown from all the crying and that english isn't my first language so pls excuse any mistakes!!! :)

as for the pre-outbreak stuff, i know! there was definitely a part of me that did want to stay in that world, the majority of the chapters take place during that time. i just wasn't sure what to do with the overall story of the fic if i left it there. but i have a lot of ideas about what things would've looked like for them if the outbreak had never happened. if i have any ideas i'd be down to write some blurbs and headcanons maybe in the future. ❤️❤️❤️

I feel like there is significance in the fact that Sasuke was given piggyback rides by Itachi and it was highlighted multiple times that Juugo also carried him on his back. I just don’t have the brain capacity to come up with why it’s significant in my mind.

First some notes about the piggy back in-general as used by the series

At first glance the piggyback itself doesn’t seem to be super significant in and of itself because honestly speaking, it’s the most convenient way to carry anyone when you’re a ninja… But if you look a little closer you can see that it still tends to be used in the story in situations where there is at, very least, a basic level of trust between the two people involved and at most a close relationship. Prominent examples being Gai and Kakashi, Kakashi and Naruto, and of course, Sasuke and Itachi.

As a matter of fact, the idea of a piggyback meaning something more than just convenience is pretty well illustrated when Neji refuses to let Rock Lee carry him. While we could just assume that Neji finds getting a piggyback embarrassing the fact that it was directly contrasted with Gai carrying Kakashi on his back coupled with Neji and Lee’s historic lack of friendship/closeness I'd say it's pretty safe to say his refusal was simply because he and Rock Lee just aren't that close.

*Quick note that I don’t remember all the times the piggyback was used so my thoughts on this whole thing are definitely colored by the lack of data

From the times we see the piggyback in use we can infer that carrying/being carried is a way to indicate closeness.

So Juugo carrying Sasuke means they at least have trust, but it’s definitely a deeper connection if you ask me.

Moving on to why it’s significant that both Itachi and Juugo have carried Sasuke on their backs:

A few things (and I need to make this a bullet point list because I am struggling to string these thoughts together coherently lol):

it means that the level of trust Sasuke has with Juugo is comparable to what he had with Itachi which, let's just sit in that for a second because do you have any idea how big a deal that is? This is huge. This guy was hurting so badly he cut everyone (including himself) off from his actual feelings and kept people at a distance because he was hurting so bad. He didn't let anyone it. and for him--this closed off sad boy--to then let Juugo carry him? Unreal

When Itachi carries Sasuke it’s pre-massacre AKA pre-trauma Sasuke which is when Sasuke was at his most genuine, healthy, happy self. He's not colored by trauma, his way of viewing and experiencing the world hasn't been warped, and he’s open and unguarded. this kind of sets the precedent for what sort of mind-space Sasuke would have to be in in order to allow himself to be carried again. at least in my mind anyway.

When Sasuke was little he had Itachi to look after him, protect him, and keep him safe. (remember Itachi was carrying Sasuke because Sasuke hurt his foot) Itachi was a place of security, and getting a piggyback from him was an extension of that. After the massacre Sasuke didn’t have that, and one of the ways we know that is because Sasuke never gets carried. Now one could say part of why we never see Sasuke getting a piggyback is situational--we never see Sasuke carried anywhere so ofc we wouldn't see him getting piggybacks--but if you think about it, every situation where he could/would/should have been carried were moments to illustrate how alone he was. Like the valley of the end when Kakashi comes to get Naruto and carries him home (hello piggyback indicating close relationship) which is contrasted by Sasuke walking away alone even though he was definitely injured. Basically after Itachi left, Sasuke didn't have anyone to look after him in a similar way until Juugo.

I'm just circling back to the trust and vulnerability part but post massacre, Sasuke isn't open and vulnerable--at least not to the level of allowing someone to carry him on their back--to anyone. He's shut down and the reason why is because he's hurting that badly, and there isn't anyone for him to open up to. Most interestingly he puts physical distance between himself and everyone by frequently crossing his arms or putting his hands in his pockets, all non verbal ways to distance yourself from people around you without physically moving away. This further shows us just how much he's closed off because one of Sasuke's love-languages is touch (we see evidence of this when he's a child; him hugging Itachi, jumping on him, and wanting to be physically close to him a lot etc. Also the forehead poke--a form of negative touch--held a lot of weight for him) and when you start not doing the thing that your love language it means something is wrong.

So for Sasuke to then let Juugo carry him is just crazy to think about because it's telling us that those walls that Sasuke put up because of trauma have lowered (at least where Juugo is concerned) and that Sasuke feels safe enough with Juugo to be in the same emotionally open place as he was with his own brother.

I had SO many thoughts, and I hope I did an ok job piecing them into something that makes some sense 👍 I'm obsessed with the idea of Sasuke being so open and emotionally vulnerable with Juugo if you can't tell, and to compare it to Sasuke's relationship with Itachi which is also so deep albeit in a slightly different way was such a treat.
