what do you think azalin was like as a kid?

what do you think azalin was like as a kid?

We get a glimpse of him as a fifteen year old in Knurl in the novel King of the Dead by Gene DeWeese, which I recommend reading if you can get your hands on it. In this he's shown as a talented, yet arrogant young man...A typical theme for many wizards in DnD it seems.

Before he became "Azalin" and prisoner within the Mists, he was known as Firan Zal'honan. Firan was the middle child of Earl Turalitan Zal'honan and grew up in a large city. We aren't told much about Turalitan and if Firan's mother was in the picture, she's never mentioned, but what we do know is that Turalitan despised the arcane arts and would drive them from his land if he was allowed to.

So, we have a prideful young teenager who's incredibly talented in the arcane arts - he was able to cast geas at fifteen - who's talent is not only dismissed but outright loathed by his father. As the second son, Firan's only real purpose was likely to marry into some noble house for an alliance of some form or another.

Naturally, this all lead to Firan rebelling against his father and since he was rebelling by experimenting in magics, well this had diasterous results.

That all said, overall I picture Firan being far too smart for his own good and ignored by his father, so he developed a competitive need to prove himself and an agressive persona to combat his fear of rejection. He's the type of kid that would have corrected his tutors and pointed out how and why they are wrong just to prove to himself that he matters. So...in short, an absolute nightmare :D

Yes. I think any sentient creature is capable of complex emotions. That said, I have always pictured undead as experiencing the memory of past emotions more than true emotions. Liches, in particular, likely experience a dulled down version of these emotions. Gene DeWeese does an excellent job conveying this in his Azalin novels.

As for Azalin. He's a bit of a unique case for a lich as he did not actively seek out lichdom. Instead, the Dark Powers tricked him into the change by promising him that if he followed their instructions he would have the power to bring his son back from the dead. The son he executed for treason.

Though Azalin rarely shows his emotions through the solid iron walls he's built up around him, DeWeese shows them crack through now and again and its clear that Azalin experiencing true anger and sorrow. In fact, those emotions often drive him to make very foolish decisions.

Anyway, long answer shortened - yes, he could experience love but he's probably too obsessed with proving himself 'right' by finding a way to bring his son back to life.

Well, his true curse is not being able to bring back his son, Irik, from the dead. So, in not learning new magic Azalin's creativity is dampered. The other side of this is Irik does not want to come back, so spells such as True Resurrection would not work as he is not a wiling target. So, dampering Azalin's creativity is key...otherwise this magical genius would have come up with a new spell to force a spirit to return.

EXPERIENCE  /  HOW  LONG  (  MONTHS  /  YEARS? ) :　Holy shit, you want me to count that far back. You want me to tell you how old I really am!?! So, I started to roleplay when computers were pretty new to houses. YES! I was one of those kids that was graced by the first computers in houses! I think my first computer was a IMB one or something, but I started playing on a computer with internet back in 2000. My parents didn't have a lot of money so we couldn't get an earlier computer; this was a gift from a friend at church for me. It had Windows 98 I think or something. I don't know.

Anyway, got distracted, but when that  came around, one of the first forums every I think that had roleplaying on the web was called Avidgamers. I played Pokemon as a self insert character. One liner diaster writer I was. So yeah, I've been roleplaying for about 23 years now, but in terms of writing, I have been writing stories since I was 9 years old, so that is about 26 years (I use to also write self insert stories in Sailor Moon or Pokemon or things like that XD). Anywho, I went on a tangent, anyone who reads this your amazing.

BEST  EXPERIENCE :　Oh man, I'm not sure. There are so many things that could be my best. I use to own forums before, I had some amazing partners. I miss them dearly and I hope they are doing amazing things now. Honestly, I think its just the level of growth I've had over the years. From going to being a self-insert writer who could only write a line or two, to now trying to expand my writing and doing more. To be more quality then quantity, but also meeting partners who absolutely challenge me to write better and be better. I want to be good for people, but there are those partners that absolutely push me to try even harder and be even better.

RP  PET  PEEVES  /  DEALBREAKERS :　I'm not saying this is a pet peeve? but I typically stray away from one liners or massive purple prose writing that I don't understand what I'm reading. While I never deny anyone's choice of writing, these are the things I tend to stay away from because I personally cannot write them. I  can't really say what my pet peeves are? I probably have some but I don't know of the top of my mind.

MUSE  PREFERENCES  FLUFF,   ANGST  OR  SMUT :　I am, hands down, an absolute fiend for angst. I know it might be overwhelming for some people but I really find it carthatic for myself? and have a double enjoyment of angst that turns to fluff. I like to call it Angsty Fluff, or Fluffy Angst. The bonding of two people in difficult moments whether that is fighting to survive death or helping someone through a rough period. Two people, bonding and encouraging each other is something I really enjoy to write. I also don't mind writing smut, I actually enjoy it but I do tend to write smut with people who I heavily plot with often.

PLOTS  OR  MEMES :　Plots. While I post memes a lot, I do try to create a plot line to those memes too. I need some kidn of foundation. I am not looking for a written out script we have to follow to a T, that's not what I mean. What I am looking for is just like this idea to build around, maybe even talking about our muses connections and waht they are dealing with at the time. That kind of foundation and design really helps me feel more connected to our msues and the writing. I love memes, but I tend to only continue memes with people I plot with a lot.

LONG  OR  SHORT  REPLIES :　I love long threads. like you don't have to apologize for anything because I thrive on really long replies. I have had replies go up to 1.5k words, which absolutely thrills me. The shortest replies I can do is maybe 2 paragraphs. Any shorter then that, and I tend to loose interest and have to drop it.

BEST TIME TO WRITE :　Honestly, no idea. I am far more productive at night my time (CST). I tend to stay up til 2 or 3am.

ARE  YOU  LIKE  YOUR  MUSE(S) :　Caitlyn is very much my muse, so much so we relate on many different levels. I understand her deeply and I'm very connected to her. As for my other muses, yes and now. But caitlyn, hands down, is almost like a part of me that I get to write fully.

heres a story for you.

The first time i ever got high it was on edibles, and it was a diaster. At first i didn't feel anything and I was with my friends, we were good. But then we were on the bus and it hit. Me and one of my friends, M, were laughing so loud and we couldn't stop and it started to hurt my body so much but I couldn't stop. my other friend, J, was just chilling but her leg was shaking a lot and I wasn't sure if she was okay.

Then my friend, M, started saying "they're gonna call my dad" and bus out into tears and I was like "who?"

she said "everyone on the bus, they're gonna call my dad?"

so then Me and J started laughing cuz that was ridiculous. Originally we were gonna go rollerskating but we weren't in the right state of mind so we went to get pizza instead. We had to get off the bus and cross the street to get pizza, and there were no cars but we were running and screaming like we were gonna get hit.

My friend, J, called her mom cuz she felt so sick and we told her not to mention our names and the first thing she did was mention us. Her mom was the type to call our parents tbh because if J didn't answer her texts in a timely manner she'd call the cops to make sure she's okay.

So then we left her and got one of M's cousins to pick us up, and then I went to their house and fell asleep but I fell in love with this song by Meek Mill (called Intro) that was playing really loudly on her cousin's radio.

I fell asleep, we woke up and then I threw up on my way to the bathroom instead of in the toilet and when I got home I just pretended to be sick.

I haven't been high since.

first and foremost fe14 fucking sucks hands down

not to say that it wasn't ambitious or that it couldn't have been good, bc I firmly believe both positions. but I think its 2 biggest issues are 1. how Intelligent Systems handled production & Nintendo handled marketing 2. The english translation is a lowkey nightmare.

Plot preface: You are a demi-mythological figure, with potent first dragon blood from your father who is known as the silent dragon. All claiming royalty rely on their latent draconic blood and the associated powers (aka combat gimmick), particularly among the most powerful nations in this world (the two biggest being Hoshido with the Dawn Dragon (anachronistic parallel to Japan around Edo-early Meiji? It's biggest characterization is being in self imposed Isolation) and Nohr with the Dusk Dragon (anachronistic parallel to Germany, although more Vaguely European in general aka elements of English and French. It pulls from generic medieval fantasy aesthetics But in my heart of heart it's like the neoclassical to romantic era. they're just considered barbarians who do nothing but conquest so...), who, unsurprisingly, hate each other). However YOU, MC, are special and can actually physically transform into a dragon bc of the dragon blood potency, but only discover this when you have The One Big Protagonist Tantrum

This is all bc Dragons Are Naturally Aggressive. They're quick to lose themselves in age without grounding techniques helped by their humans. They're like natural diasters who use worship for therapy. All the dragons are long dead, leaving us with human and beastfolk nations, except for the Silent Dragon. MC's father exists in a state of decay within a pocket dimension of only his kingdom, Valla. It's hidden by the Bottomless Canyon that naturally divides the unnamed continent that houses the world, where Nohr and Hoshido are predictably controlling each side of the natural border. Everyone in Valla is dead or a corpse used in the Silent Dragon's army, invisible when they're sent out into the rest of the world. The Silent Dragon, in his corruption, is hellbent on destroying his world and the world at large. Also I should say now technically it's a multiverse setting with pocket dimensions controlled by Moros, another final living dragon but bc he doesn't actually step foot in these bubbles he takes care of, he's just the God God I guess. So the centuries of feuding between Nohr and Hoshido was artificially strung along for the entertainment of a revenge seeking prideful creature. They're like the same dragons as skyrim or reign of fire: so self destructive they are experiencing different stages of decay. Also, sometimes, they're SUPPOSED TO BE INTELLIGENT BEINGS OF SENTIENCE?

Anyway. Due to Valla being destroyed, the queen Mikoto flees with her child, the You, to Hoshido while you are but an infant. She, through her absolute rizz and latent clairvoyance, soon became a consort of the Hoshidan king. He fostered 4 other kids with his queen, who died soon after, allowing Mikoto to take her place.

Everything I just told you is later plot reveal, so from here on out the marketed narrative is that your Blood Family is from Hoshido. Years later, still but a child, you are kidnapped by the king of nohr, who kills your hoshidan step dad. Your memory is wiped and you are treated and assume yourself a Nohrian royal. Nohr's king keeps you locked away in a mountainous stowed away snowy citadel fort with a magic barrier made to protect his weakest child (the spinoff manga discovers it was actually a repressive barrier to weaken those under it).

Turns out, the Nohrian king died in the near past or. allowed himself to become possessed by the silent dragon? This is another vague detail to give us an irredeemably one note evil king (someone once made a yt comment like "each 3 routes have 1 fe trope final villain: an evil king, an evil dragon god, and a possessed loved one" or Something like that). Which is fine whatever ig. Also fyi there's a lot of not implied but not extrapolated on abuse and incest mentions. Especially with the Nohrian concubine wars. Which localization all but cuts out. None of what I just said is revealed except in the "true route."

Due to Plot, you discover the "truth" and must make a decision: side with Hoshido (Birthright), side with Nohr (Conquest), or choose your own adventure (Revelations; aka True Route obviously). This determines your final villain and its presentation, and the general implications mid war and post war worldbuilding ofc.

So thus the game begins.

Going back to my points:

I found a reddit post detailing one of the main writers credited Shin Kibayashi, and how he was mostly likely hired bc of his background in scriptwriting for historical dramas. Everything suddenly made sense to me after this. Not that one guy is blame for it all, but I like to think of it as an example of how sometimes creative experiments don't always pan out when feeling ambitious (they were (probably?) riding the high of the huge success that fe13 (awakening) was, as in it quite literally saved intsys from shelving fe)

I'm not a dub hater (I actually really like the osmt dub). But the localization team took a lot of meaning out of the narrative that had already probably been cut down during game production. I suggest checking out @/emblemxeno to see a lot of examples they've discussed. It's as bad as them Quite Literally Removing An Entire Support Between Two Characters (google beruka saizo c support).

Fire emblems core characterization design is centered around having unlockable support chains going C-B-A-S (usually S is marriage/paired ending cards when you win, not all games have or use them, some games (fe14) use them willy nilly). It makes sense for them to hire a script writer to do parts of the game script that relies 100% on dialogue and has almost no visual cues besides VN sprite emote changes. I think the supports are a largely successful aspect of fe14 for this, but its Huge Cast and general shit fuck plot/shit fuck characterization During The Actual Story And Not The "Bonus" "Optional" Content undermines any of this.

Also the actual undermining done by localization: making it more "meme-y" and its weird political decisions due to it being the mid-2010s. Let's not forget about the localizations. I generally try not to shit on localization efforts or any translation teams but the shit they pulled still blows my mind. They also never finished translating a huge bulk of the DLCs that followed that also did a lot for many characterizations.

Which leads me to say: Nintendo tried charging you Full Fucking Price for All Three Routes on top of whatever they wanted for DLCs (the ones they did release officially in NA at least)

Tldr: production hell just did a number on the motherfucker

(but also I won't kid myself about the actual story execution being pretty lame but I think the general issue was it being viewed as a script/a book/a movie while being written. Something passive. The game medium did not enhance nor congeal with the story)

What I *like* about fe14 is its character dynamics. It has a lot of geniunely interesting characters and it is very trope savvy. Also I'm otouto trash idc. My entire fic is about leo I'm like ⅔-¾ done and it's around 11k wc so I'm guessing it'll be like... 15k?

The world building could have been so dope too... the possibilities.... I tried taking the shitty historical parallelism further while also staying true to form about the Vagueness of events. Lemme share the summary and a few excerpts to give a feel. I wanted to create a kind of magical world that humans wanted to ascribe a "proper" system to inspite of its irrational behavior

It’s easy to be a podficcer; nothing special is needed and I’m happy to provide tips for simple podficcing! In fact I sorta ramble about my process here in this Answered Ask and include 3 basic tutorials.

To the Reylo community at large (writers, artists, readers, lurkers, everyone!): If you could pick one of your, preferably, complete (or at least a fair number of chapters in and being updated) fanfics that you would like to have a podfic made out of... which would it be?

I’d love to create a list of works where authors have given permission to podfic their fics, whether short or long, and to contribute to the new Reylo Podfic Collection!

But I’d love to use this tumblr thread as a.... thought exercises, I suppose, and permission, too, for people to podfic your work.

While I do do podficcing for Marvel... it just makes me want to do so much more Reylo stuff! There’s so few pieces out there compared to the bevy of Marvel stuff, but honestly, every time there’s a new (Reylo) podfic—it breathes new life back into the fic, the author, the ship, the fandom..... plus you personally feel awesome for the performance high and for bringing a smile to the writer’s face. That’s the best thing ever and I adore doing it, no matter how ‘simple’ the podfic may be.

** Although an unconventional fic format, this fic can certainly be podficced by using (1) different tones of voice for thoughts, fic summaries, different sorts of text, and/or (2) different tones of pings/chimes/whatever for the text messages from different characters, and/or (3) adding in an extra line of, for example: *ping* “text message from thekyloren reads as follows…” OR (4), if you want to get fancy, you could have some friends assist you by recording any of the messages from ���their’ character. That would be a lot of fun, in fact! Another option is (5) where you would split your recordings and give an audible indication to read the message, followed again by a new audio file, etc. Only problem with this approach is if there are too many breaks in the audio and you end up going from one to the other too many times in a row.

Earis Recs 2.1 - Jail for 1000 Years

Theme: Jail for 1000 Years, fic where either Ben Solo/Kylo Ren or Rey are in jail, in prison, or in exile. The four fic in this first installment of the theme are all canonverse fic where Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is in prison or exile for his crimes, either serving out a sentence or awaiting execution.  There are plenty of alternate universe prison fic, which I will rec in later versions of this theme, but I wanted to focus on the canon-verse fic first.

As a general warning, all these fic discuss prison and imprisonment.  Some also discuss execution and the death penalty.  In several, Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is in solitary confinement, which is effectively torture, and suffers the well-documented psychological effects.

Morning in the Burned House by diasterisms

I consider this a Reylo fic, but it’s primarily a beautiful Leia character study.  Leia Organa has lived through so much, lost so much, sacrificed so much, and now has to deal with her son’s murder of his father.    At the beginning of the fic, both Kylo and Rey are broken, angry, and in pain, albeit showing them in different ways.  Kylo is sentenced to exile with Luke Skywalker, and is only permitted communication with Leia, and by extension, Rey.  In this fic, we never forget that Leia was the daughter of a man who tortured her and took almost everything away from her, and the mother of a man who killed her husband and destroyed almost everything she built.  So, how do these characters move forward?  And what can they look for help?

2. The Way To Tomorrow by the-reylo-void (on tumblr here)

This fic is not a light read.  Which may be why this is possibly one of my favorite fics.  Again, in this fic, Ben Solo/Kylo Ren is sentenced to exile on an uninhabited planet and is forbidden communication with anyone else.  He is given a weapon, a blaster with a single shot.  Of course, Rey neglected to inform the sentencing body about the bond, and she and he are able to communicate.  Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is a very broken character here, resigned to self-hatred and self-destruction.  But Rey refuses to give up on him.

Status: Complete

Rating: Mature

Warnings: Suicide Attempt. Heavy Angst and Grief

3. A Brief Equinox by dustoftheancients

Kylo Ren is imprisoned while he provides information to the Resistance.  He is also injured, a wound he received while protecting Rey. Rey does not remember this.  Rey visits him in prison, at first reluctantly, angrily, and then more willing as she tries to figure out what happened and begins to understand him, at least a little.  But he won’t talk to her.  And the wound won’t heal.

Rating: Teen and Up

Warning: Discussion of the death penalty, heavy angst

4. Astrometric Binaries by pontmercy44

At first, Kylo is sentenced to death.  But at the last moment, through Rey’s intercession, he is reprieved and sentenced to exile on a harsh, unforgiving planet with little light and little change in the available light from day to night.  Kylo struggles.  Rey is the only one who interacts with him (except for a droid), and at first, he cannot be anything but cruel to her.  However, once again, she keeps him alive.

So in trends, it looks like I almost always start with a named character and their action, which occassionally involves speaking. Apart from the one time it was a rock doing something. I should... probably vary that.

6. and 7. are my favourites, because they set up a dynamic between two characters, and not one necessarily expected between them. I struggle with first lines though. 9. is bugging me because I’ve just thought that ‘Clint is eight years old when the circus comes to town’ would have been much better.

Matt's POV:

Tonight was Reid's bachelor's party and Matt wasn't going to go as he just met Reid but Reid insited on him going. So he decided to go. He spent most of the night thinking about Y/N and what she is doing at the bachelorette's party. He went in this, just to keep her from moving houses but now he doesn't know what he is doing. "Hey bro,"

Your eldest brother walked over to Matt and sat down next to him. "Try looking a less miserable,"

Matt didn't looked at your brother. "Well, I dont want to be a stripper club,"

"My sister got your wrapped around your finger, doesnt she?"

This entire thing was going off without a hitch but Matt felt like it was gonna end in diaster and then that would mean she defintely won't come back to 51. "Yeah,"

Jackson pointed at Matt. "He defintely needs a lap dance to chill him out,"

One of the strippers started walking towards Matt but Matt quickly got out of his seat and poliety declinde the dance and walked out of the club. Matt heard someone walking behind him and he turned to see and it was Jackson. "What?"

"I don't know what Y/N told you but this attitude you got towards me needs to be checked,"

Matt rolled his eyes and inogred him, which annoyed Jackson. Jackson grabbed Matt's shoulder and yanked him around to look at Jackson. "Did you hear me?"

"Obivously, I did but do I care? No. You are someone I really dont give a damn likes me or not,"

Matt shakes Jackson's hand on his shoulder and started walked towards his car. He just wanted to go back to the hotel to figure out things. "If she told you what happened, it was her fault,"

This stops Matt and and made him turn around. "What?"

"The night she caught Rose and I at the party. It was her fault. She was just to stupid to realize that I was cheating on her the entire time,"

Matt felt his anger rising in his chest but he knew if he punched Jackson, Y/N would get mad so he held back his anger. "Oh really and how is that her fault?"

"She wouldn't put out so I went to someone who did,"

"Well good thing, she broke up with you and you defintely don't deserve her. You defintely deserve someone like Rose though. So perfect match,"

"Has she put out for you?"

This guy was working on Matt's last nerve. "That's none of your business,"

"Well, once a prude always a prude,"

"Well I rather have a prude which she isn't by the way than some lack of a better word slut who made in her misson to destory someone's life just to make her feel better. The fact y'all are still holding to the past for dear life is astounding,"

"What do you mean?"

"Don't act like an idiot. I know you are trying to make Y/N jealous. You have been at the same job since high school and hasn't been promote or anything and its been like what? Almost ten years? Rose is working a dead end job as well. She has NOTHING to be jealous over. So do me a favor, get over the past cause its making you and your girlfriend look exteremly patheic,"

As Matt started to turn around, Jackson raised his fist and punched Matt in the nose, which had turned into a brawl fast. It didn't take long to have security break it up and kicked them out which Matt didn't care cause he was going back to the hotel anyways.

Y/N's POV:

By the time, Matt got home you had just gotten back to the hotel room that you two are sharing. You had gotten a text from your brother that Matt and Jackson got into a fight outside the club but he didn't know what it was about. You honestly weren't even mad at Matt, knowing how Jackson acted all day, it was a matter of time before it happened. You heard the door unlocked and you saw Matt with a couple of brusies but his face wasn't bloody. "I thought your face would've been more bloody,"

"I washed my face off before I came up. Look, I'm sorry but he was-"

You waved at him to get him to stop talking. "I'm not mad. I knew it was bound to happen,"

"What if, your sister kicked me out of the wedding?"

You shrugged. "Then she kicked me out. I'm sure the reason you got into the fight was because he made a comment towards me,"

"Yeah, just a bunch of shit that wasn't true. He started the fight cause I called him and Rose patheic and that you didn't have nothing to be jealous of because they both are stuck of a job that are dead ends and since high school,"

"See, why would I get mad at that?"

"Maybe, cause you've been getting mad at me for a lot of reasons here lately,"

You sighed. You and Casey has yet to actually talk about what happened at the firehoue cause everything has been super busy. "I'm sorry for that,"

Matt's eyes went wide. "Wait..Is Y/N Y/L/N actually apologizing?"

You chuckled and hit him in the chest. "Shut up! When two lieutenants make you feel like saving a kid's life wasn't a top priority, it kinda make you think about what those two lieutenants priorities are,"

"I'm sorry about freaking out on you we just wanted to know you were safe. Saving a child was the right call to make but we just lost too many firefighters recently and I-we didn't need to lose other and when you didn't answer back, it worried me okay?"

You looked at Casey and you could see hurt in his eyes when he said that about the lost of the fighfighters. I wasn't at the house when they lost Shay but I know it hit him hard, not as hard as Severide but still hard and then a few years later, we lost Otis. rYou walked up to him and pulled him into a hug. You hugged for a few minutes but pulled apart. "I get that but when Gallo or Ritter or Kidd don't answer, you don't freak out on them. You only freaked out on me. Are you that worried that I can't do my job properly?"

Casey shifted on his feet and looked at you like you just said the most ridicious thing ever. He placed a hand on your checked. "You got it wrong. You are one of the best firefighters we have but that's not the reason I freaked out on you,"

Casey stopped himself after that and you were too frozen from the closeness to say anything. Casey smiled before leaning in and kissed you. You froze for a second before you realized what was happening. After a few second more of the kiss, you pulled away but Matt's hand was still on your cheek. "Now, see if you would've kissed me when it happened, I wouldn't have gotten mad,"

"Oh really?"

"Yeah. I'm staying at 51,"

"I figured,"

You smiled before kissing him again.
