Extracting quills at home is unnecessarily painful and stressful for your dog. Most owners who pull at home end up having to come to the vet anyways, and their dogs are now hypersensitive to being approached and touched and may be more difficult for staff to assess and sedate.

Your dog may also need to be assessed for risk of infection or even a pneumothorax depending on the amount and placement of the quills.

Pulling quills at home often results in them breaking, sometimes slipping beneath the skin and requiring more invasive techniques for extraction. The same issue occurs when quills are cut short. The longer and more intact a quill is, the easier it is for veterinary staff to pull.

This saves money! If we are able to pull quills quickly and easily, if we are able to sedate your dog faster and with fewer drugs, your bill will be smaller.

Help us help you! If your dog has been quilled by a porcupine, avoid touching or letting your dog touch the quills (placing an elizabethan collar is acceptable), and call your vet promptly.

Most dogs get quilled when they are off-leash in wooded areas during the evening or at night. If you live where porcupines live you can reduce the chance of an incident by being mindful of visibility and keeping your dogs on leash unless your are extremely confident in both your dog's recall and your ability to spot a porcupine before your dog does.
