i am a firm third person perspective fic writer, and i believe that first person works better in original fiction that fanfic, but the perspective that im always torn over is second person, because it’s either really bad or really good. i strongly dislike reader fics where its “you do x” and its like. i would not do that. but writing second person in the context of “you” being an existing character can be so good. so good

I don't want Jason as a declawed version of himself, all 'murder Is Wrong' and part of the batfam, but I also don't want him as an evil 'I blow up schools and shoot people for fun' villain.

I also once saw someone say a big part of the divesiveness here comes from how Robin!Jason and Red Hood!Jason are practically different characters. If you want villainous Red Hood, you make Robin Jason more aggresive, angrier, you make him more like what he'll become as an adult. And if you like Jaybin, you explain his murders and mistakes as side-effects of the pit and make Red Hood nicer and more agreeable, like how he wss before.

But I feel like both are a disservice to his character, but the 2 extremes of him are also really hard to reconcile.

rewatching c3ep48 for silly reasons and forgot it was also the episode with relvin and matt mercer please tell me everything about that man. there are so many interesting body language choices and facial expressions that are like. not in conflict with but definitely complexify the Gruff Man aura and . i would like to know every thought he’s ever had actually .

“Are we going to talk about it?”

James doesn’t turn, even as Lily follows him, hot on his heels. She can almost see his eyes rolling, even from behind. “Sure, Evans. Let’s talk about it.” 

“You know, Potter, talking generally involves eye contact.”

He spins around abruptly, and she almost slams into him. “Oh, my bad. I thought you didn’t want to look at me. I thought I made you sick.”

They’re both seething, anger pulsing between them like a live wire. Those old familiar edges and barbs—ancient weapons they grew quite accustomed to using against each other in fifth year—are reeling their ugly heads again. Neither of them knows how to navigate this, now that they’re dating, now that they’re supposed to be able to work through these conflicts instead of succumbing to them. It’s easy to revert back to the old weapons, put away in favour of affection, but not under any real sort of lock and key.

“It wasn’t me, Lily,” he says, for the tenth time at least. “I told you—”

“But they listen to you! You may not have fired off the spell, but Black and Pettigrew—”

“You know, that’s one of my personal favourite things you do, Evans,” he says harshly, his eyes narrowing. “Bringing out the last names like they’re not your mates, too. Like—”

“Are you listening to yourself?” she demands, stamping her foot. Her hair whips around her face, a vibrant red curtain barely containing her fury. “You literally just called me Evans.”

“Of course I’m listening to myself! One of us has to do it, since you’re so averse to hearing a word I ever bloody say.” His hands are clenched into fists, his knuckles white with restrained anger.

“That’s not fair.” Her voice wavers, a tiny crack in her armour, but she stands her ground, fists planted on her hips.

He throws his hands up, the motion sharp and full of frustration. “None of this is fair! Least of all you accusing me of attacking another student when you know I haven’t done that in—”

“That’s not my point, James.”

They’ve been going in circles for the better part of the day, since Lily went to visit Hestia in the hospital wing and found an incapacitated Mulciber in the next bed. She’ll admit to having been hasty in her accusations of James and his mates, but his face had given her everything to know she was right on the money. He’s been avoiding her ever since, though not very successfully, as they have every class and meal together.

It’s not the first time this has happened recently. Not the Mulciber thing exactly, but the fighting thing. The arguing-without-any-true-solution thing and she thinks he’s growing as tired of it as she is.

James runs a hand through his hair, a telltale sign of his frustration, making it even messier than before. “I miss the old you,” he says, his voice low, and it might just be the most hurtful thing he’s said to her yet.

“I don’t,” she says, immediately, eyes blazing. “The old you was despicable. Arrogant, reckless, dishonest.” She looks up at him, her voice trembling with anger and hurt. “How can I miss him when he’s standing right back in front of me?”
