Welcome, welcome, one and all, to the Weekly Spotlight!

This week’s spotlight is~

*panting... and a weak drumroll*

Batman Beyond!

Some of my earliest memories of this show was watching reruns of it on Toonami at oddball times back just before Toonami got moved to a daytime time slot. During this time period, I found it to be a little mature for me, a little dark, and a little hard to follow since around this time I was about 4 years old. Still, I remember thinking it was cool, simply because Batman was cool, but otherwise, I wasn’t all that interested.

Back a couple years ago however, something in my mind trigger my memory of this show, and it became pretty apparent to me that I had never actually sat down and watched this show all the way through. So, I did some searching, found out Netflix had it on demand and I sat down and watched it whenever I was free to do so. I’d watch it a couple episodes at a time as I didn’t want to binge the entire thing in one sitting and leave me wondering how I was going to fill the void after finishing such a good series. It became a nice treat to watch on evenings and weekends and became a nice ritual for me. I enjoyed it.

However life became a little bit busy not too long later and I put the series to the side for a later date when things got a little less hectic. Besides, I was on the last episode and I really didn’t want to end the series just yet, so stepping away from the series didn’t seem like such a terrible thing to do.

I didn’t get back to it. Netflix took it off streaming. I pretty much admitted I was never going to finish the series and that was the end of that. I knew that it also had a movie afterwards to wrap up the series, since it was suddenly cancelled and since THAT wasn’t on Netflix either, it was pretty easy to just walk away from the show altogether.

However, a couple months ago, I saw a clip on Youtube that went into the origins of Terry McGinnis, the star and Batman of this series. It was in a completely different animation style, so I assumed that it was the direct-to-video movie. I was intrigued. And seeing as there was no hope that I was going to see this movie any time soon, I thought, “What the hell? Spoilers never hurt anyone.” The info, that I’ll get to later, left me so disgusted and outraged that I vowed never to watch the movie.

All of these things swirled in the back of my mind the next couple months and here we are! It’s getting it’s own Weekly Spotlight! So let’s get into it’s background, shall we?

Batman Beyond is an animated TV series that was premiered on Cartoon Network’s Toonami and even showed over on Kids’ WB’s Toonami on January 10, 1999. Yeah, you heard me right: Kids’ WB also had Toonami. So, let me throw down a little bit of history for ya’ll.

Cartoon Network is owned by the Turner Broadcasting Company, which is a subsidiary of AT&T’s Warner Media. Yeah--- that Warner Media. The Warner Media that makes DC comics, and DC TV shows, and just about anything DC under the sun. That means that they not only own the rights to Batman Beyond, they own the rights to Toonami, and Cartoon Network, and Kids’ WB. So as an attempt to diversify Kids’ WB’s afternoon line-up, Kids’ WB “borrowed” Toonami from Cartoon Network and began showing their own individual line-up, separate from Cartoon Network’s line-up. There was a little bit of an overlap, as I recall, since many popular shows were underneath the Toonami name, but overall, they’re line-up was fairly different. In 2002, Toonami was dropped from Kids’ WB and was replaced with syndicate programming and infomercials. (Kids’ WB wasn’t doing the greatest in the “kids” department and eventually, was absorbed by Warner Bros.’s other channel The CW in 2008.)

So, Batman Beyond was interesting in that it was showing on two stations at the same time. My research indicates that it premiered first on Cartoon Network, and then would show over on Kids’ WB not too long later, but there’s a lot of conflicting sources in that regard. Pretty much the only thing I’m certain of is that it premiered new episodes on Toonami, but as far as whose Toonami, I have no idea.

Batman Beyond was an intended continuation of the “Batman legacy,” or more importantly, a follow-up to the legendary Batman: The Animated Series. At the helm of this ship was a man named, Bruce Timm, who was a co-creator of Batman: The Animated Series. He would go on to co-create and produce Static Shock, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and produce for Green Lantern: The Animated Series. This guy’s a legend. Although extremely popular amongst fans and critics alike, the short-lived series only had 3 seasons before it was placed on hiatus and eventually cancelled. The simple reason? Time. Having signed aboard with the creation and production of Justice League, Bruce Timm simply didn’t have the time to be working on both series, despite attempting for a little while. All plans for a 4th season were discarded, and as to whether there were any episodes produced or if there were simply ideas on a sheet of paper, only the production team themselves know the answer to that question.

So! Let’s get to the premise!

So, the beginning of this series actually opens up with Bruce Wayne still as Batman. While his company of Wayne Enterprises is dealing with competition by the Powers Corporation, Bruce is on the look-out for a girl who has been kidnapped in association with the Powers Corporation. (At least, that’s how I interpreted it.) He finds her, fights the baddies to save her, but in the midst of the tussle, Bruce starts to suffer a mild heart-attack. He tries his best to continue the fight but is quickly overpowered. Having had the living snot beat out of him, Bruce Wayne does the only thing he can do in this situation (still suffering a heart-attack mind you) and pick up a gun and aims it at his assailant. Freaked out by the fact that Batman is threatening to use a gun for the first time ever, he runs away to meet the cops outside. The girl is freed and Batman hobbles away completely disappointed in himself. He places the suit inside the Batcave, seals it all away and vows never again to have the caped crusader to see another night.

Fast forward 20 years. Gotham is practically a brand new city. There are flying cars everywhere. Tech is crazy and out the wazoo--- think something along the lines of a Cyberpunk aesthetic--- and Wayne Enterprises is now dealing with a hostile take-over by the Powers Corporation with Bruce Wayne surprisingly absent from the whole affair. Gotham, as always, is dealing with rampant crime; one of the most vocal and trouble-making groups being the Jokerz--- a gang with its members dressed up in outfits very similar in style to the original Joker gang. Enter in Terry McGinnis: he’s just your typical teenager dealing with girl problems, bullies, and a real bad habit of placing his foot inside his mouth whenever he gets angry.

Having been grounded by his Dad for punching a kid at school for spitting on him, Terry sneaks out to meet his girlfriend at a local club. While there, the Jokerz show up and Terry quickly comes to the aid of his girlfriend and tries to teach these pranksters a lesson. Quickly overwhelmed by their sheer numbers, Terry steals a motorcycle and thus a good ol’ motorcycle chase begins. Finding himself outside of Wayne Manor, Terry runs into Bruce Wayne, almost hitting him with the motorcycle. Bruce Wayne tells him to get off his property, but with the Jokerz showing up mere seconds later, they team up to fight them off (Bruce doing most of the ass-kicking despite his crazy old age.) Terry turns to thank him but finds that Bruce is near collapse and needs help getting to his manor where his medicine is. Having gotten his medicine, Bruce falls asleep and Terry takes this opportunity to explore a little bit. Finding a bat trapped in an old grandfather clock, Terry stumbles upon the Batcave and all its contents. Bruce finds him in the Batcave and subsequently throws Terry out of both the Batcave and his property.

Terry, miffed about the whole experience, returns home to find the police swarming his Dad’s apartment. Questioning his Mom what happened, apparently, the Jokerz surprised him while he was at home and murdered him. Having fought with his Dad only hours before he was killed, Terry is distraught, wracked with grief, and determined to figure out who it was who killed his father. Looking amongst his Dad’s old possessions, Terry finds a disk with some suspicious looking info on it and goes back to Wayne Manor to solicit Bruce’s help. After a series of events, Bruce agrees to take him on formally as his personal assistant who chauffeurs him around and picks up items that he is unable to get himself, but secretly, he’s training him to become his successor and to become the new Batman!

Whew... I think that’s my longest premise to date! (I basically had to summarize the first 2 episodes because it sets up basic situation for the entire series. It’s a lot to take in...)

So...let’s start off with the animation.

As you can see from the previous gifs thus far, for how old this series is the animation is is really fluid. The fight scenes are clean. The attention to detail is so fantastic. Even the character expression are so subtle and beautiful that it’s just so hard not to feel for the characters whenever tragedy strikes. But... it’s also dated. Since many of the backgrounds are hand-painted, a lot of fights on city rooftops, or bridges, or even sinister laboratories are pretty generic and even recycled from time to time. The color palette, although unique enough to give it its own funky style, is... yikes... And the intro? God, it just screams the 90s.

The soundtrack is this weird... 90s punk with a twinge of metal, with its shredding electric guitar and electronically distorted bass as well as some... electronic additions? Honestly, if the intro didn’t sell you on how old this series is, the soundtrack does. For the most part, the soundtrack sounds like an regular action cartoon series, but went that electronic guitar kicks in.... *whistles* It’s bad.

As for the rest of the show? It’s... it’s fucking fantastic. You’d think that writing for a teenage protagonist, especially a Batman teenage protagonist, they’d really hype up the melodrama and the angst to the point that it’s just flat-out cringe-worthy. I mean, all you have to do is google the recent dystopia craze that’s been plaguing teen action movies to see how... cringey the protagonists are. And I mean, how was a 19-year-old action animation not only touch on the stress of being a teenager, but also one whose Dad is murdered in the first episode of the series? It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Turns out... they actually did a really great job of writing Terry. He really does seem like any other male teen you’d meet in high school. A lot of people try to talk about how teenage angst is just so terrible and awful to watch and that it’s flat-out cringey. The problem is that teenage angst is a real thing and if it’s written-correctly, it actually seems believable. The interesting part about Terry’s case that makes him an actually interesting character instead of a walk-talking edgelord is that a lot of his “angst” comes from a place that he believes is injustice. He believes that a lot of people are being unfair (and in some cases, they really are) and so he goes out to fix these “injustices.” Problem is that in his attempt to “fix” things, he actually makes things worse. He doesn’t see that other people’s decisions are actually made to protect him, or made for other reasons that he can’t see. So instead, he rushes in headlong and unprepared, running his mouth because he feels he’s doing the right thing, and ends up getting himself in deeper trouble. I felt a connection with Terry because although he was a punk kid getting into trouble, causing fights and mouthing off to his parents, he’s just somebody trying to make the world a better place and ultimately, failing really bad at it. He makes stupid decisions because he doesn’t think things through. He thinks that he knows best, when in all reality, he isn’t even playing with a full deck of cards. And it’s because of these character flaws that I love Terry and it’s what makes him so interesting to watch. And the best part is? When Terry realizes he fucks up, he admits it. He apologizes. He even cries because he’s made a mistake that he can’t ever undo. He’s not some idiot who thinks he’s better than everyone else--- he’s just an idiot who’s trying to make the world a better place. And that’s really cool. They wrote him with real emotions and a realistic responses to stressful situations that never came across as melodramatic. Instead of writing him as a teen who has emotions, they wrote him as a person with emotions who just happens to be a teen. And that’s just fucking awesome.

I loved Bruce’s and Terry’s dynamic. You had grouchy, old Bruce who’s just way too tired for this shit, helping out sassy, back-talking teenager Terry that made for fantastic snark sessions. Like... the sarcasm was palpable between these two and I loved every second of it. The fact that this series won numerous awards when it debuted isn’t surprising because it’s just a treat to watch the misadventures of these two sass-masters is fucking great.

As far as Terry’s home life, it seems pretty realistic. Terry’s got a little brother named, Matt, and as an individual who has a little brother myself, the interactions are pretty realistic. The little arguments, the nit-picking, the pranks--- all of them felt pretty true to life. Now, the interesting thing about this series is that the martial status of the McGinnis’s are unknown. Although Terry’s Dad gets murdered in the first episode, Terry makes a comment about wishing to live with his mom instead of his dad, which leaves the impression that the two are divorced. However, later on, as the origins of Terry are revealed in further detail, it’s pretty heavily implied that Terry’s parents were together before Terry’s dad’s death so... I don’t know. However, Terry still seems to deal with normal teenage problems: fights with his mom, annoyances from his little brother, stresses of schoolwork, a girlfriend that wishes he was more around, problems with kids at school and his friends. When you layer that on with the grace in which they write Terry’s character, it produces a very believable character that you can build a connection with and feels hella realistic. I completely approve.

Honestly, although all of it is so... dated, the aesthetic is pretty pleasing. It’s weird enough that makes you think, Ew, what the fuck? but also the fact that it’s set in an unnamed (yes, unnamed--- I’ll get to this later) future, makes you go, Oh. Okay. Weird, but interesting. If you want a famous example to compare it to, think Samurai Jack. Otherwise, see Cyber-six for a similar cyberpunk, futuristic tech vibe. Speaking of future timelines, the show’s idea of teenage lingo in the future is just so... laughable. You constantly hear teens say that things are so, “Schway” or let slip a fake curse word, “Frag.” It’s terrible. I legitimately thought it was something that kids used to say back then but after doing some research, I realized how ridiculous it actually was. Just as a tip: if you’re going to change the way people speak in your writing, you’re going to have to change a pretty much all of common speech in order to make something like this natural. Otherwise, it just looks more and more stupid as it ages.

Each episode is a villain of the week with a couple of two-parters here and there. Although there isn’t much in terms of an overarching story, there are references to previous episodes and encounters, so watching these in some sort of relative order is pretty recommended. There were also a number of interesting cross-over/reference episodes, which I found myself pretty surprised by. But I guess it also made sense, seeing as it was a very popular series that ended way before its time. In the beginning, the writing’s a little clunky, and the animation is a bit fuzzy, however, it’s a series that ages better overtime; the pilot is pretty fucking good one-two punch. But as I was watching it, I couldn’t help but laugh at the melodramatic close-ups and the pauses between some dramatic lines of dialogue. I never felt that the drama itself was melodramatic. Just the way they presented it.

In a lot of ways, this series is very dark and mature (especially the movie like holy shit it’s fucked up) which is really ironic considering it was intended for kids. However, they never really showed any gruesome deaths, showed pretty much negligible amounts of blood, and honestly, the majority of the “dark” stuff would pretty much go over kids heads. I say this as someone who has watched this show once or twice as a teeny child. I always knew bad stuff was happening, but I don’t think it ever really hit me as to the gravity of the situation. Yet, I also remember labeling this as a “big kids’ show” growing up so... who really knows. But for the best amount of enjoyment, I’d recommend this more to teens or young adults than for kids. It seems more up their alley.

Now... let me touch a little bit about the movie and subsequent crossover episodes that were released after the series ended.

The direct-to-video movie that “wrapped up” the series so to speak wasn’t what I thought it was. It was a fantastic, dark, macabre, sinister ending to a great series. I think I’ll save my thoughts on that for a different post. But to give you a little taste: it involves brainwashing, a child murdering a fucking adult, a whole lot of guilt and regret, and even a bit of a hostage situation so... Yeah. It’s great. I highly recommend. Don’t be afraid of what I said before.

However. There is an episode in the Justice League Unlimited which is supposed to reveal the secret origins of Terry McGinnis. What supposedly happened is that Amanda Waller (or the lady that ran the Suicide Squad) saw that Bruce Wayne was getting older and would eventually have to retire as Batman. Knowing that Gotham wouldn’t survive without some sort of Batman out there, Waller concocted a plan in which she would make sure that Batman would live on forever. What she did was without Bruce’s knowledge, she took a bit of his DNA and made it into a serum that would overwrite the host’s reproductive code to that of Bruce Wayne’s. She found a neo-Gotham couple that had a psychologically identical match to that of Bruce’s parents, Terry’s mom and dad, and injected it into Terry’s dad in the guise of a flu shot. This means that Bruce Wayne is Terry McGinnis’s father. Waller, then, concocted a scheme to get Terry’s parents murder but after the assassin called Waller out on her shady tactic, the project was dropped. It was just sheer coincidence that Bruce and Terry met and that Terry’s father got murdered in an unrelated incident. Here’s the thing: the great and fantastic aspect of Terry’s McGinnis’s character is that we finally saw a Batman, a successful Batman at that, that was neither Bruce’s child nor a Robin or a Batwoman/girl that he basically housed and raised. He was a completely unrelated kid who took up the mantle of being the next Batman. The Batman was no longer a person, but a symbol, and that’s one of the things that made Terry’s Batman so fantastic! But this episode completely ruins Terry. It’s awful. Especially when you consider the fact that they didn’t even have the guts to make their own movie about it with the original crew, they simply slapped it on as in after thought in series that fans may or may not follow to. It’s terrible! A complete afterthought!

It also comes with some interesting implications. As I said before, when the series begins, we get the implication that Terry’s parents are divorced and he resents the fact that he’s living with his dad against his wishes. If Terry’s parents are a psychologically identical match to Bruce Wayne’s parents (which, what the fuck does that even mean???) does that mean that Bruce Wayne’s parents were eventually bound for divorce? Something to think about.

For those Batman fans out there, I’m not entirely sure where this series fits into the whole Batman continuity. First off, there’s no reference at all to Jason Todd--- especially not in the movie, which seems kind of odd considering that Tim Drake plays a big role in the movie itself. Part of me says that it has to do with the fact that Jason Todd fucking died yo and you can’t really put that in a children’s TV show/movie. But at the same time, with the shit they wrote in the movie and the other dark and fucked up things they put in the movie, it seems odd they wouldn’t at least mention it... An interesting thing to note as well is the fact that this was before the movie Under The Red Hood was made, so the Jason Todd resurrection canonically hasn’t happened yet. So the fact that there’s no reference to The Red Hood makes sense. This is also before the rather... problematic origin of Damian Wayne has been created, so again, no references to Damian Wayne despite the fact that Talia al Ghul makes an appearance in the series. However, the TV show was resurrected into a comic book series that continues to this day. Having not read them myself, I have no idea what the current status as far as Terry’s origins/relevance within the continuity. But I am eager to find out.

Overall, this series was a wild ride! I loved every minute of it, and sitting down and watching not only the episode and movie that I hadn’t before but a couple of my favorites made me fall in love with the series all over again. I’m so upset that it ended.

Rating this series out of 10, this easily earns an 8.5 on my scale.

It’s aged pretty poorly. I can’t deny that. And for that reason, although I want to give it a 9, it really is deserving only deserving of an 8.5. Despite that though, this series is easily one of my favorites. I love sitting down and rewatching it and the intro always gets me hyped despite the fact that I’ve seen it a thousand times already. If you haven’t seen this series already, go fucking watch it. Seriously. It’s sssooooooo gooooooddddd. I’ll always have fond memories of this show. And the moment that they discuss bringing it back, given that they have a good writer/producer/animator and all that, I will be the first person on board for that reboot. It was such a good show for how short-lived it was. It’s simply tragic...

First up is Kim Seokjin {Jin, Jinnie, Mamma Jin, Princess Jin, Eomma/Eomma Jin, Pink Princess, Eat-Jin, Third Guy From The Left, Car Door Guy, Mr Worldwide Handsome, Seokjinnie}. Jin is the oldest brother, the oldest hyung in BTS and is basically their mother and let’s be honest our mother too.

Some facts;

Born in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea – it looks like dis;

He’s got a papa, mamma, and hyung

He majored in film at Konkuk University

BTS be placin’ him as #1 visuals…I mean…he is gorgeous

He has the longest legs & widest shoulders (60cm)

He does this “traffic dance” which is adorable and you should go check it out, you won’t regret it

He speaks a lil Chinese (Mandarin)

Lil Jinnie usually cleans up the dorms (because he’s literally bangtans mum)

He also rlly likes Disney princesses which is adorable

He’s a v v good cook and has said he’s happiest when he’s with food (relatable jin m8)

Fave number = 4

Fave colour = blue (used to be pink, I think he still has a soft spot for it tho)

Fave weather = spring sunlight

Jin started playing Super Mario at like age 5 and Maple Story in Seventh Grade (Year 7) and he still plays them 😊

He’s friends with Jin Hyosang (Kidoh) from ToppDogg as Kidoh was under Big Hit Entertainment but left in 2012 and switched to Stardom Entertainment

Okay so next up is my ultimate bias (in case you couldn’t tell) Min Yoongi {Suga, AgustD, Yoongles, Min PD, Syub Syub, Motionless Min, Genius (self-proclaimed but I can reveal that this is a true fact m8), Min Monarch, Min Suga, D Boy, Sub-Energy}. Yoongi is the second oldest in BTS and probs the most savage human upon the planet, he often seems like the grandpa of the group but he can also be kinda childish and lively sometimes ^_^

Some facts;

He attended/attends Global Cyber University

Yoongles is usually in charge of fixing the things Rap Monster breaks. He changes lightbulbs, fixes the toilet etc (handyman ayyee 😉 )

Although Rap Monster revealed that he sometimes acts like a 5 yr old (same m8, same)

V likes amusement parks. He especially likes the gyro drop, gyro swing and roller coasters (boi we can go together because same)

V can climb a tree but he can’t get back down (such a dork omg 😊 )

V comes from a poor family; “I came from a poor family and I never thought I would become famous.” He grew up under a family of farmers and often takes pictures of the farm they own

To say Sabrina Smythe was born with a silver spoon in her mouth was a gross understatement. After all, how many people were born into families rich enough to actually own penthouses on both coasts of the US and a villa in France?

Despite what after school specials would try to say about her life, she actually was pretty well loved and born in a long line of success, particularly on her dad’s side. Her grandfather, Marcus, had been a powerful lawyer that made the Smythe family well known, respected, and rich. Her dad, Adam, was also a lawyer, but for a music firm, and one of the best at that. He would often would sit her on his lap and tell her about his cases. He explained copyright laws to her when she was still learning how to tie her shoes. And under his watchful eye, Sabrina learned how to be truly cunning and clever.

Her mom, Colette, was also doting. While the two weren’t the closest, Sabrina learned French from speaking it with her Parisian mother growing up, and Colette said that even her two older siblings never learned it as well as she had. Sabrina just proved to be the brightest star in the family, much to the annoyance of her older brothers.

Eventually Sabrina went to a prestigious private school in New York City, just after finishing off a year of school in France. And seeing as it was an all girls school...well, Sabrina had a lot of fun. She had discovered she was gay at a fairly young age, but she didn’t come out to her family for a while. They weren’t homophobic or anything -- her dad couldn’t be if he wanted to work in the music business and her mom was French -- but after years of being perfect, well, she wasn’t sure she wanted to tarnish that image. As accepting as her parents would be, she knew that her mom had been planning some big wedding for her one day and her dad and brothers always joked about pointing a gun at any guy who tried to date her. She was pretty sure if she told her family she’d willingly pull the trigger, they’d be a bit disappointed.

Eventually she finally came out and...it wasn’t really a big deal. No one particularly cared and there was very little fanfare. It was fine. Well, mostly fine. Her parents were accepting....sorta. But she could tell they weren’t 100% comfortable with it.

Instead of focusing on that, Sabrina just threw herself into school and her high school choir. She quickly started leading it, pushing them harder than before and looking damn good while doing it. Well, she assumed so, seeing as many members of the choir would fall into bed with her over her time there. So when it came time to choose a college, Sabrina chose Scripps, a school in southern California that was part of a five college consortium. She could take classes in various programs at the other schools, but being at Scripps in particular meant she would, yet again, be in an all girls school. While she planned on studying pre-law and economics, she was definitely much more interested in studying the student body - and bodies.

At Scripps, Sabrina had a lot of fun. Okay, sometimes too much fun. As fascinated as she was by the legal and economic classes she took, it was hard to care about homework when she could play rugby with other girls and hook up with others or even drive out of a town to an almost exclusively female strip club.

Sabrina fell hard into the party scene, eventually even surpassing the rugby girls. Most Fridays she could be found drunk off her ass and she’d wake up on Sunday with a massive hangover and several stories about herself she couldn’t remember. There were definitely a lot of stories about her doing karaoke to the Grease soundtrack while topless. So, like, at least she wasn’t hurting herself or anything.

Of course, her grades started to suffer. She still passed her classes, but she went from being an honor roll student to a C average...C+ if her professors were extremely generous. So...she started taking Adderall to help with her class work. Then, when she realized how much rich white kids in the OC loved uppers, Sabrina started to sell some at parties. And, okay there were definitely a handful of times when she could be found snorting some of it as well, but, hey, she did a bitching version of “Summer Nights”.

But all things must end, and her senior year finally came. It turned out her average grades weren’t enough for the top law schools she applied for after graduation. Even with her last name on the application, Harvard, Yale, and even Cornell turned her down. And Cornell was basically community college, like why even go to college if you only got into Cornell. So Sabrina graduated to be very popular, but with no plans for her future.

The once brightest star of the Smythe family was completely lost.

Adam was confused and disappointed, but he was still willing to help his daughter in any way possible. So he pulled a few strings and got her a job at the music firm. While she didn’t have a law degree and therefore couldn’t really help him, she had also had the economics degree, so he figured she’d be a good candidate working with the managers. He figured eventually they could have her apply to get her MBA instead and she could pursue a career in economics.

But, to everyone’s surprise...Sabrina kind of loved the managerial stuff. As a junior staff member, she learned how they found new talent, what kind of paperwork they signed with the music firm, and how to market artists. It was like taking every interest she had -- music, social media, manipulating the minds of people around her -- and using it to her advantage.

So one day, after working for New Directions for over a year, she was in New York for vacation (while her dad worked on both coasts, she mainly frequented LA), and she decided to go to a bar that apparently had live music. The first band was some awful guys trying to be Nirvana and failing, and the next band didn’t look much more promising; they were all hot women, which Sabrina appreciated, but they brought out some keyboard with pre-recorded beats. She was about to just flirt with some of the women next to her, but then The Sirens started to play, and like a sailor at sea, she was drawn in by The Sirens.

Sabrina immediately found them after their set and got some details about them carefully. She learned they were all students, that they all were involved in the creative process together, and that they could never find a female drummer who could stay. She also learned that Kat Hummel had some hypnotizing eyes and could fire back at Sabrina faster than anyone else she ever met; Quinn Fabray was possibly smarter than she was; Marley Rose was just as sweet and funny as she looked; and Norah Puckerman was very similar to her, which meant Sabrina liked her a whole bunch. She left them with her business card and got their contact info, including their website, Facebook page, and even Kat’s YouTube channel.

After that, things fell into place quite easily, and Sabrina finally signed her first band. Using all of her cunning and training, Sabrina marketed the girls well and by the end of May they had a hit record on their hands. And as she pushed the #puckerose angle and the gay angle and the feminist angle whenever possible, they just got more successful.

Eventually Quinn’s told Sabrina about her cousin Kitty Wilde and the band she had started, Divine Influence. Sabrina agreed to got to California to listen to them and was impressed enough to get them an audition. They soon got a contract as well. Due to the similar styles and the fact that she “discovered” them, it only made sense that Sabrina also took on Divine Influence. Using the similar formula she used on The Sirens, Divine Influence soon hit the Billboard charts in a major way.

And after The Sirens released their second album and were successful enough to warrant a world tour, Divine Influence signed on as well. So now Sabrina gets to go travel the world. She gets to do what she does best -- do her job and look damn good while doing it. It’s the only way she knows how to do things, after all. And she definitely plans on getting laid as much as possible during the trip.

And, being Sabrina, she still plans on partying. A lot. But, no, her partying ways have calmed down a lot since college. Now it’s only drinking and maybe a bit of weed every now and then. Sabrina is a professional woman now who takes her job very seriously -- especially since it’s so close to the public eye. Summer Nights Sabrina hasn’t made a public appearance in years, but Sabrina’s still on edge. So far, through careful manipulation, no one at her job or in her family have seen pictures or gotten any evidence of her partying past. Yet.

With that, as well as a few other skeletons in her closet, Sabrina has a lot riding on this tour.

Samantha Evans: When Sabrina first started college, one of her rugby teammates told her about this lesbian based strip club, she had to get in on that action. It was fairly far, so she didn’t go too often, but when she moved to LA for that music firm job, she could go more often. It was there that she first saw White Chocolate, a gorgeous blonde with killer abs and the poutiest lips she had ever seen. And when the girl locked eyes with her and crawled over to get her tip, her eyes widening at how much Sabrina offered, Sabrina was enraptured. She ended up coming way too often to that little strip joint and spent way too much money in tips and for private rooms with a few of the dancers, but mainly with that little blondie (she was sure her father would be oh so proud to know where his money was spent). So imagine Sabrina’s horror when, after years of this arrangement, she found out the newest band under her care had a guitarist with the same pouty lips, the same blonde hair, and a look of horror in her eyes when she took in Sabrina. She tried to get others to take over the band, but with their relationship with The Sirens, it didn’t make sense. So Sabrina has since pulled Sam aside and, as much as she finally wanted to taste those pretty lips, she’s explained that their relationship will remain strictly professional. No one can know about Sam’s old job and Sabrina isn’t too fond of people finding out that she spent hundreds of dollars at a strip club.

Katrina Hummel: Kat is the perfect client; she’s charming in interviews, she’s responsible and always prepared for rehearsals, and she already had some fame and social media influence before The Sirens premiered. But, damn it, sometimes Sabrina wishes they didn’t work together. So, okay, maybe one night after the success of that first album release party, they drank a bit too much champagne and maybe things got a bit heated and just maybe they spent a night together that rocked Sabrina’s world more than she’d like to admit -- it turns out pianists-turned-bassists have a whole set of talented fingers. And maybe it happened a few times after that, but that’s all on the DL since they promised to keep it a secret. Honestly, Sabrina would love to do something with her again, but she knows Kat wants that whole fairy tale future thing with a big wedding with the white dresses and all and Sabrina, as much as she really does love and care for Kat, doesn’t want that. Like, ever. If she was cool with just hooking up, Sabrina would sleep with her again...and again and again, but she knows that it really isn’t what Kat wants, so she has to stay strong. But, again, have you seen those eyes? Or her body? Or those perfectly manicured fingers?

Santana Lopez: Santana is one of Sabrina’s favorite people. Ever since the two met, they’ve gotten along really well. They’re both sarcastic, gay, and dedicated to their jobs. Santana even more so, because she has to work against the whole nudes on the internet thing, but whatever. She works hard and can play hard when she lets her hair down (in the figurative sense). So when Sabrina had to pick a publicist, she obviously picked Santana. It’s her first big job so she knows the woman’s worried, but she also knows that if anyone can handle it, it’s Santana. Sabrina also already told her about the Jackie stuff and about Sam’s job. She just may have forgotten to tell her about how Sabrina was one of her most frequent clients. And about the Kat stuff. And the very unprofessional photos of her that are certainly floating around out there. But, hey, it’s very unlikely that stuff will leak anyways.

Norah Puckerman: Sabrina knows she shouldn’t play favorites, but Norah might be her favorite of all of her clients. Despite some obvious class differences, the two have a lot in common in how they see life and definitely how they see sex. Norah is one of the few people that can make Sabrina crack up and she’s proven to be a a worthy wing woman. On the last tour, they both helped the other get many a hook up (to be honest, Sabrina’s job wasn’t that hard seeing as Norah was famous and a lot of fans of all genders wanted in her pants already), and Sabrina’s honestly excited to have that happen again. Hell, Norah even posts pictures of Marley and endures all the Puckerose shippers without being asked. The only issue Sabrina has with Norah is the fact that, as funny as she is, her unfiltered comments have ruffled a few feathers and Sabrina’s afraid that one day she might cause a PR disaster. Her interviews are either stiff and uncomfortable or come across a bit rude. Thankfully, Kat already agreed to help with PR while they room together over the tour. As long as she tries to learn from Kat and keeps posting pictures of Marley on social media, Sabrina will handle it all in stride...and hopefully the whole Jackie thing won’t blow up in her face.

Rachel Berry: Between everything going on with Sam, Sabrina would admit she didn’t really pay attention to the rest of Divine Influence as much as she should have. She did her usual work, like checking in on them and all of that and helping them manage some press and PR, but she didn’t really get to know them that well. Of course, that all changed when Quinn brought Rachel’s anxiety issues to her attention. Yeah, Sabrina was worried for purely business reasons at first, but, in all honesty, she really cares about Rachel, too. While she won’t admit it, part of her feels slightly responsible -- maybe if she paid more attention she wouldn’t be freaking out so much. Maybe she could’ve caught it earlier and got her in therapy sooner. Maybe she was too hard on her during the recording process. While Sabrina can seem soulless, she honestly loves and cares about all of the girls she works with, and she feels like she didn’t do her job. Still, Rachel has proven to be resilient, so she’s not being like some mother hen, but she’s been hanging out with her more outside of work functions.

Jackie Puckerman: When Jackie overheard some important and top-secret information, Sabrina knew she was fucked. She was ready to offer anything up to her. But then Jackie just wanted a bit of money and a job on tour. Then Jackie revealed why she wanted it and...god. Sabrina hates being in this position, the position of lying to her friend and client, Norah, and acting like she doesn’t know Jackie’s real last name. But she’s going along with it, because she can’t let what happened between her and Sam get out. It’s just yet another thing that she’s panicking about, but hopefully it won’t all blow up in her face...and hopefully Norah doesn’t hate her if she finds out.

Quinn Fabray: Ever since Sabrina first met The Sirens, she took a liking to Quinn. Sabrina, though maybe not an honor roll student anymore, was always a precocious child and a well-read adult. It wasn’t often she met someone else like that, but Quinn seems to know even more than her. She kinda likes it, since it’s always good to have someone to keep her on her toes and suggest some good literature. Despite working with her for years, Sabrina still doesn’t seem to know much about her. Quinn is a pretty private person, and Sabrina only really knows little bits about her past. Honestly, though, it just has increased Sabrina’s curiosity and she’s just...intrigued by her. Is it a sexual thing? Well...maybe. After all, Quinn is beautiful, and there’s always something hot about a woman who keeps some things a mystery.

Blair Anderson: Blair has been the best and most stress free client during this whole tour. Blair is a hard worker, is always on time for rehearsals and departures, she loves what she does, and she even has come up with some good ideas for her and Jackie’s little thing off to the sides. Sabrina’s even considering throwing her a solo or two in the encore plans. But, at least for now, Sabrina is just happy to have someone on this tour that isn’t carrying around a lot of drama. Or, well, at least drama that Sabrina has to deal with. She knows that Blair is just waiting to get a recording contract from her, and while Sabrina normally wouldn’t put too much thought into it, she’s actually considering it this time.

Kitty Wilde: Much like Quinn, Kitty is almost too smart for her own good and also pretty private. Must be a family thing, huh? While she has no problem voicing her opinion, much like her cousin, Kitty doesn’t share much with Sabrina. She sees it all as a kind of business, which is fair enough; it’s nice having someone in Divine Influence who doesn’t have some big secret Sabrina has to hide. Still, Sabrina recognizes that Kitty is smart and, like her name might suggest, sneaky. If she wants to keep those secrets with Rachel and Sam, she’s going to have to stay on her toes around that girl.

Fiona Hudson: When Kat asked if Fiona could work on the tour with them and used her big eyes and flirty little smirk - the kind that seemed so out of place and unexpected but so hot on her - Sabrina couldn’t say no. She got Fiona the training needed and she did her job well and that was that. She thought that was the end of it, but Fiona’s getting on well with Quinn and Norah and she’s playing well, so Sabrina’s thinking it might be time to get her girls an actual drummer. And, hey, what better way to introduce a girl to the group than by having someone actually related to two of the members join? It seems like a perfect fit for her. So if Fiona pulls this off, Sabrina will have that contract ready in two seconds flat.

Marley Rose: Oh sweet, adorable, kind Marley Rose. Marley is undoubtedly talented and beautiful and all of those things people rave about her, but Sabrina can tell that the singer has some animosity towards her. Marley does a good job of hiding it, of course, but Sabrina has always been good at reading people. Well, at least when it comes to people being annoyed by her. She knows Kat never told Marley what happened since Marley would’ve told her off by now if she knew, but she wouldn’t be surprised if Marley sensed something happened. After all, Marley and Kat grew up together and seemed to develop some weird kind of twin-like telepathy. She also knows Marley isn’t a fan of how much Sabrina pumps up the Puckerose fangirls, but that’s just Sabrina doing her job. It’s the same thing when Sabrina tries to get her to go public with her eating disorder -- which, Sabrina would point out, could help thousands of girls who need inspiration, as well as bring them some great press. Of course, Marley will never admit she doesn’t like her since she’s too smart to speak badly about someone in charge of her career, and they do get along well most of the time. Still, Sabrina wouldn’t be surprised if Marley finally blows up after months on tour.

As far as I’m concerned these girls are the perfect match of battling personalities, they balance each other out. While your definition of catfight and mine differ, I’d have to say no. Personal Secret

First of all, many of you agreed it’ll be the Pirate Booty thing, which, d’oh. But is that really a secret?

Secondly, the tags used by @lambnoire speak to me:

Thirdly, most of you feel it will be a personal secret. Which might be wishful thinking, because we all thirst for more details about Barba’s personal life:

sunshine-and-the-catsuit answered: I’m kinda hoping for the relationship thing, personally. Maybe he kept emails that he shouldn’t have…or something like that. Or hid information he shouldn’t have..to help a friend.

I feel this might be accurate. Barba bending the rules (more on that below) for a lover or a friend (say, Alex Munoz or Eddie etc), out of loyalty. That would compromise him somewhat, but his motives would still be relatively pure. Depending on the rule/law he broke, of course.

revolutionarynerd answered: A sexual secret. Even in NYC a bisexual ADA for instance would raise eyebrows. My money is on Barba’s personal private life getting spread all over the news/internets in the course of a hacking operation targeting someone higher up.

an anon who likes to toy with my emotions said: Barba theories/plot bunnies; 1. It's a revenge porn ep and when the suspect('s allies) find out Barba is prosecuting they threaten to leak sexts/nudes/dating profiles b/c they do not know who they are fucking with. Barba goes ahead, out for blood & maybe even using it to score some points in court. But then after sentencing we see his private self; humiliated, confidence wilting. Not helped by the media hi-lighting his humiliation rather than his victory.

Re; Barba being in the closet: there are valid arguments on both sides. If Barba is not straight (just for speculation purposes, of course, because we’ve never seen him with a romantic partner) it’s possible he would be out and proud, because he seems like he doesn’t give a fuck about what people think of him. But it’s also possible he’d be in a glass closet, just for the sake of his job (and/or his future aspirations. I touched on this in my fic Running, btw, which involves Barba running for the DA position). So he may, in fact, want his “secret” to stay a secret.

I must say, the idea of forcibly outing Barba is interesting, because it would allow for an intense but not necessarily preachy Very Special Episode, plus we might get some awesome Raul acting in the process, but would the current writers care enough to do that well?

The idea of a forbidden affair (with a woman or a man who’s married or otherwise problematic) seems a little more likely. Especially if it’s someone else at the DA’s office, and they both get exposed. Maybe Barba would choose to fall on his sword to protect his partner? This could give us some juicy moments for sure.

At any rate, I’d love to see Barba with a crack in his armor. Either because he feels exposed, or because he’s willing to be exposed to protect someone he cares about.

Professional Secret

I love this. It might not necessarily fit with the concept of a “secret” (i.e. something Barba has been hiding) but I LOVE the idea of a frame-up. Barba would be indignant, and the squad would be supportive, they’d reassure him they don’t believe the hackers and they’ll do anything in their power to restore his reputation. That would give us a much needed glance into the SVU team dynamics, and it would show us just how much Liv and the squad value Barba. So it definitely won’t happen.

OH HELL NO Secret

an anon who likes to toy with my emotions said: (I'm paranoid it might be something like this) Barba commited/is accused of commiting a sex crime & evidence points to him doing so. If he did, he defends himself, saying he knows now it was wrong, it was long time ago, he's a different person, he's grown since then - but it alienates him from the SVU squad when they find out. The hacked info is used to discredit him and his work with SVU, & by extension squad themselves.

NOPE.

I do like the idea of a secret which would compromise his work/the convictions he’s managed to get in his career, BUT NOPE. Like, you might be on the right track re; a secret which would paint him, the DA’s office and the squad in a bad light, and that’s the reason they all need to solve the case, if not make sure the secret stays hidden, but HELL NO.

More Hell No Secrets

an anon who likes to toy with my emotions A LOT said: Turns out he may have actually killed his Dad. 4. Barba is in fact innocent (excluding withholding of evidence) and it's information that somehow threatens his mother. Or else, shows him burying something harmful to his mother. 5. The hacking reveals something with his health - I'd bet on psychiatric, maaaybe rehab of some kind.

On another show, I might appreciate topics like these being explored delicately. On SVU, nah. I would love a reference to Barba’s mother/family, but the fact the DA’s office is hacked, and that’s how Barba’s secret is revealed (via his work email, basically) probably means it would involve either Barba’s work or his personal life (because he may have foolishly used a work account for something non-work-related).

Actual Secret

@webbgirl34 has what is probably the most likely theory, though:

With the way this season has gone, I’d be willing to lay money it ends up being something to do with Liv. Like him covering up for something for her or him doing something on the gray side to help her out.

I can just see that happening. Barba will reach out to Liv, not to reveal a personal secret which might give us some insight into his character (God forbid!), but to tell her something she already knows. Like, “Hey, Liv, remember that time I helped you with (X)? It’s back to bite us in the ass. We need to fix this, or both we could both lose our jobs.”

Imagine if Barba’s secret involves, like, Johnny D (remember, lol?) i.e. Noah’s paternity, i.e. the time Barba was perfectly willing to bend the rules to help Olivia? Or, if the writers are unwilling to rewatch their own show and revisit actual past events, what if they come up with another instance of him possibly even breaking the law, just to help Liv?

Last season, we did see a Barba who followed the rules and ratted on Liv/Tucker, but arguably that was because he was mad/jealous. Or, because he really was that stringent about the law (lol). Maybe we’ll go back to rule-bending Barba? In a ret-conned way (since we won’t actually witness said rule-bending)? We’ll hear about a made up past incident, a plot contrivance, to better sel the “secret” angle?

Again, I can totally see this happening. I just hope it doesn’t. Even though it would likely be better than a potentially compromising, salacious and deeply personal secret.

My husband and I are looking to start a family soon. He has a very steady job, as do I. We live in washington state. And its just the two of us. I need to find cheap insurance that covers pregnancies. I tried qualifying for basic health, however our income exceeded the maximum amount to qualify. In October I had a miscarriage. I was ten weeks. That alone cost us close to two thousand out of pocket. We are not rich enough for all those expensive insurance programs, however we make too much to qualify for the cheap or free ones. Please help. Any advice is appreciated!
