Udai knew that being a mangaka was a tough job, but he never imagined it would be this messy. He was neck-deep in deadlines, pages, and ink blots, with barely enough time to get a decent night’s sleep, let alone a weekend off. Yet, he continued to pour his heart and soul into his manga series, determined to make it a success.
This morning, he woke up to the blaring sound of his phone, a call from his dearest editor, Akaashi Keiji.
—————————————————————
“Good morning, Udai-san.”
—————————————————————
“Morning, Akaashi-san.” Yawning, Udai immediately closed his mouth with his palm then trailed over the wall to read the clock whilst listening to his editor’s kind reminder of his deadline approaching fast at the end of this month.
—————————————————————
“I’m calling to remind you about the deadline. It’s coming at the end of this week. Please start taking it seriously, Udai-san.”
—————————————————————
“Understood, Akaashi-san. There is no slacking off this time.”
When Udai said there is no slacking off, he meant everything about it.
This morning when he woke up, Udai was asleep clutching to the paper of his work for the next volume of Zombie Knight Zomb’ish. He didn’t need Akaashi Keiji to keep reminding him of the deadline he already set his own alarm on.
He is really working hard this time.
—————————————————————
“Please be real about it this time.”
—————————————————————
Udai sighed.
“Should we switch to facetime, Akaashi-san?”
—————————————————————
“I would prefer it this way. Then, don’t forget to have a proper breakfast, Udai-san. You’ll finish the manga earlier if you eat a proper meal.”
—————————————————————
Bowing to the air, Udai replied, “Thank you so much for your hard work of being so considerate about my condition, Akaashi-san. Have a great day ahead!”
The call ended with Udai yawning once again, tossing his phone to the side where there was a pile of paper almost covering the ground where he remembered he was sleeping so comfortably last night.
He took a deep breath and looked around his room. The walls were plastered with sketches, storyboards, and reference images. His desk was cluttered with pens, papers, and empty cups of coffee. His tablets are still on. A stray sock lay on the floor, and the curtains were drawn shut, casting the room in a pale, eerie light.
Udai slowly got out of his bed, stretched his arms, and headed to the bathroom. He splashed water on his face and looked at himself in the mirror. His hair was a mess, and there were dark circles under his eyes. He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, trying to tame the wild strands.
As he walked out of his apartment, he noticed that the sun had barely risen, and the streets were still relatively empty. He decided to head to the convenience store anyway. The early morning air was refreshing, and he felt a sense of calm wash over him.
As he walked, he saw a group of high schoolers, laughing and chatting as they headed to school.
Udai smiled, remembering his own high school days. Back then, he never could have imagined that he would become a mangaka, let alone a successful one. He had always loved drawing, but he had never considered it a viable career option.
As he approached the convenience store, he saw a small dog tied to a post. The dog was wagging its tail and looking up at him with big, soulful eyes. Udai crouched down and stroked its head, and the dog licked his hand.
The dog barked, and Udai chuckled.
He bought some instant breakfast and headed back to his apartment, feeling a sense of contentment. He had almost successfully completed another volume, and he was proud of his work.

Miyagi Prefecture, Nine years ago
Eight o’clock in the morning meant it’s the time for morning practice for all sports club members including volleyball.
About half an hour before morning practice began, the first year club members had arrived early, ahead of the second and third year senpais. Only then, fifteen minutes before the scheduled morning practice, did the senpais join in, filling the club room to change and get ready for the morning practice session.
As with most sports club rooms, a deafening noise greeted the opening of the door: a serious and jocular chatter of the first years, a few second years being silly by throwing some clothes at each other, some affectionate callings and amused laughter that echoed like a thunderbolt in the morning, the melodious humming that outshone the coolest diva in the world, and a few other performances.
Crowded.
Crowded, contrary to the ideal atmosphere some people want to start their day with, Udai was one of them.
Rather than distinguishing himself with the title ace attached to every cell in his body, or perhaps on an invisible neon plaque attached to his head, Udai chose to join in with a greeting that was uttered casually under his breath when he opened the door. His reasoning was simple: that he did not want to ruin the atmosphere with his presence, or rather that he did not want to disturb his own inner tranquility by blending into the noise in the club room.
The greetings that passed by him since he entered the club room to get ready, were replied in a nonchalant tone as he walked towards his locker.
“Good morning, Udai-kun!”
The only person who consistently greeted him in a friendly manner was Tsukishima Akiteru. A third-year club member with a tall, lanky build—far towering over Udai—his speed and spike performance were fairly consistent as one of Karasuno’s wing spiker, but he had never been a starting player like Udai.
There can only be six people on the court. When the game was on, and the ball was in the air, it was a rule that there had to be sacrifices to keep the players at six. For a long time, it has been an absolute rule that those who were to fill six spot om the court are the stronger, are the ones who are able to bear the weight of the responsibility of keeping the ball in play.
In this case, Tsukishima Akiteru might not have been one of those six for quite some time, but Udai was one of them, so that was enough.
Bowing his head slightly to the blonde senpai, Udai replied, “Good morning, Tsukishima-san.”
After changing into more proper clothes for the training session, Udai who was about to join the gymnasium with the others, was again prevented by Tsukishima with something she said.
“You didn’t eat curry-flavored pork buns anymore, did you?”
Udai stopped, peeking over his shoulder.
Tsukishima chuckled. His hand behind his head scratched awkwardly even though it wasn’t itchy at all. “Ah, sorry. I think I’m being slightly too impertinent here.”
At times when Udai gave unreadable expressions like this, Tsukishima, or anyone else, would always feel that Udai was a big guy.
“I was just joking, Udai-kun.” Tsukishima Akiteru immediately followed up his words. Both hands were raised sufficiently in front of his chest, his lips curled into a friendly smile.
It’s not that Udai would care so much about that either.
“Oh. I see.” Udai replied casually but politely. “I still ate curry flavored pork bun yesterday after practice, though.”
“Hee? Really?” Tsukishima gave a surprised expression.
“After all, it was delicious, wasn’t it?”
“Well... you’re right about that. But…”
Studying Tsukishima Akiteru’s expression, Udai immediately answered the obvious concern on his senpai’s face by saying, “About the the other day, I didn’t really go to the bathroom.”
Tsukishima Akiteru paused, blinking innocently at his underclassman who said everything oh-so-casually.
“I just needed an excuse to leave practice for some reason and saying something like that as an excuse was the best choice.”
Half-stammering, also shocked at the innocence and bluntness of his underclassman, Tsukishima Akiteru immediately warned, “Oi, Udai-kun. Keep your voice down. If Kawada-kun hears you, he’ll scold you for lying.”
“And?”
Tsukishima Akiteru was dumbfounded, “Huh?”
“It can't be helped, right? It happened.”
Logically, Udai had a clear point to make. Tsukishima Akiteru also knew that Kawada might inherited their coach’s strict nature, however, he was not someone who would strip away his own discretion to scold some underclassmen for lying.
Udai watched the change in Tsukishima Akiteru’s expression that had just been sighing like a man in pain, brightened up with a smile curling his lips.
“Udai-kun, you see, if I look closer about it, I think you do have a feel of a big guy sometimes.”
Udai frowned, not understanding the difficult term Tsukishima Akiteru used in his response. His head tilted as he asked, “What does that mean, Tsukishima-san?”
Tsukishima Akiteru smiled, “It’s nothing. What it means is that our ace always looks energetic and reliable even when no one is watching.”
Udai did not expect a friendly pat on his shoulder.
“You sound and look exactly like the ace!”
“Is that how you see me, Tsukishima-san?”
Tsukishima Akiteru laughed at Udai Tenma’s unnecessary question.
“What’s with that, Udai-kun? I obviously see you as the ace because that’s how everyone sees you, because you’re the ace. And apparently, our ace is always in his prime every morning.”
Udai always worked on that, to be in three times better shape than the others every day in order to last longer in the court.
“Hee? I see.”
Udai didn’t know that he would smile until he actually did. But he had no regrets when he said, “Well then, I’m glad to know that. I worked hard for that anyway.”
It was the first time Tsukishima or anyone else who might have witnessed the conversation had seen Udai Tenma smile other than in a match when he scored a point with a beautiful block out of their opponent.
“Oi, did you see that? Udai-san is smiling!”
“As I thought, the ace is scarry!”
“He makes a big impression when he smiles.”
“It’s obvious that you don’t want to see him smiling like that in front of you.”
“He’s untouchable. You know... it’s like that... he has these giant iron walls around him and Tsukishima-san is the only one willing to climb up there just to maintain a good communication with him.”
“Same goes to Kawada-san.”
“Yes, it’s true that our captain is always like that. But that’s the captain’s job, right? To always embrace all the club members equally. If you look closer, Udai-san doesn’t actually have a good relationship with anyone in the club, right? He’s quite a loner.”
Udai was indeed plagued by many misfortunes, one of which was his inability to connect with his surroundings. His habit of trusting himself had turned out to have grown into a flaw on the other side where that confidence had made him move away from something called connected.
He had no friends. Not even one. Not in the club, not in class, not in the neighborhood or anywhere else.
Unlike how some people would come in pairs as a package with various connections, or how they would come in groups, Udai had no one he could call a partner in this sport. Not with another wing spiker, not with any of the available setters, let alone a libero.
As you can see, Udai stands alone and proud, doing it all by himself. He guided, carried, and embraced himself without worrying what his surroundings said about him.
However, that was what made him stronger.
“But that’s cool... he was able to survive and stand at the top with only himself.”
Where weak people go to seek support by surrounding themselves with stronger people to build confidence, Udai faithfully accompanies himself, embracing and holding tight to all his weaknesses.
Up until now, he had always felt that he was enough on his own. Udai had not yet reached the point where he would need someone, and he was sure that he would always be like that in any case.
“Has everyone gathered?” Kawada, the team captain stood with his waist girded in front of everyone, ready to lead the morning training session.
His gaze traveled throughout the crowd to check all the faces of his members, making sure that no one was missing.
“Counting starts!”
At their captain’s mark, all members counted from the higher year to the lower.
“All present.” The vice captain said after making sure everyone had arrived and was not late.
Kawada turned to Udai, studied him for a while and called out to him, “What about you?”
Udai returned the question casually in tone but formally, “What?”
“Are you joining the run?”
Udai didn’t miss the innuendo in his captain’s serious question, but chose to let it slide away and answered calmly, “I am.”
Kawada then turned after leading the rest of the team to line up neatly and start the morning practice session by running some lap.
********************************************************
Usually after the morning training session, Udai would either go to class to attend or skip class if he was not in the mood to listen to the teacher’s boring, sleepy explanations.
As for academics, Udai had a pretty good academic report even being an athlete, but not so good as to earn a title like top student. At the very least, it was enough for a future beyond volleyball. In short, he was not too smart, but also not too intoxicated with volleyball to the point of falling behind in his studies.
However, one thing:
Drawing.
On those occasions when Udai felt that being in class was too boring, he would seclude himself somewhere where the teachers wouldn’t find him, and pass the time by watching volleyball matches or drawing.
This time, he was sure that class would be boring: Japanese literature was not his favorite subject. It was nothing new that Udai almost always got red marks in that subject. It’s not that he cared.
So, here he was, in a spot at the end of the corridor near the dump, spending his time drawing after watching the latest volleyball match he had never seen.
What he drew was something he had remembered from the match he had watched in a small doodle on the blank side of his small notebook.
Udai was almost used to the quiet atmosphere that accompanied him finishing his drawing, as usual, when something interrupted him. Not just interrupting, but also stopping what he was doing.
“Oh? So, Udai senpai is also good at drawing?”
Udai’s shoulders straightened in surprise at a voice that he was not expecting.
Realizing that he was being watched, Udai turned in the direction from which the voice came to greet whoever was there. There she was, a girl who instead of a karasuno uniform blazer, wore a matching black fitted cardigan. Brown hair that he remembered blew loosely one day, was now in a makeshift curly ponytail.
Where did she come from?
Sasaki Tsubasa, the girl who had been a presence that Udai had never expected at a time like this, was standing while looking at him with friendliness in her eyes. A polite but friendly smile was rolled up for him.
With Udai’s lack of skill about how to greet an acquaintance, he just stared at her.
Sasaki Tsubasa thought that Udai might not remember her, so she took the initiative to do something that might make him remember. Immediately, she took out her phone from her pocket and showed it to Udai.
Right. The phone was the thing that connected them.
“This.” Hope flashed in Sasaki Tsubasa’s eyes, that hopefully with what she did, Udai would remember something about her.
I know you.
But looking closely, their phones really do look exactly the same. For a moment, Udai was tempted to assume that what she was holding was his phone.
Udai remembered her.
“But I’ve installed a charm for mine.”
Sasaki Tsubasa moved her cell phone to reveal the white charm she had put on her phone to distinguish it. It wasn’t just Sasaki Tsubasa who did something about it. Udai also, on an initiative, put a number 10 sticker on his phone.
It was nothing, though. Udai just ran out of ideas for something more serious than a sticker of his jersey number.
Udai remembered it. There was no way he would forget such an embarrassing accident about their switched phone overnight.
I knew you. The question is, what was she doing there at this hour. Did she skip class too?
“Once again, thank you for the other day, Senpai.”
Oh, I’ve had enough of that thank you.
Sasaki Tsubasa smiled at Udai, “At that time, I was positive about losing my phone. But it turns out you kept it.”
“No, I didn’t. I did not keep it.” Didn’t I tell you exactly the same thing back then?
Sasaki Tsubasa only smiled at Udai’s answer.
Slightly, her eyes returned to peering at what Udai was drawing.
“What are you drawing?”
Udai knew he was being childish by immediately closing his notebook, let alone about saying things like it’s none of your business, in response to her question, but did all of it anyway.
“Oh? You came all the way here to draw,” Sasaki Tsubasa nodded. “It must be some very important drawing, I suppose!
Studying the look in Udai’s eyes, Sasaki Tsubasa immediately corrected herself, “Ah, none of my business. My bad. I’m sorry.”
Udai frowned, but immediately sighed after seeing Sasaki Tsubasa smiling awkwardly.
“You’re a first year, aren’t you?” Udai asked as he put his notebook back into his bag.
“I am.”
“Then why are you here?” Closing his bag, Udai turned back to Sasaki Tsubasa.
“Hm?”
“What are you doing here?”
“Hm? I’m here for—”
“Are you skipping class?”
Sasaki Tsubasa’s face was innocent, the blink of her eyes showed her disagreement with what Udai was accusing her of.
“Ehh?”
“You are?”
“I,” Sasaki Tsubasa’s hand pointed behind her, “instead of cutting class, I came here to take out the trash.”
Sasaki Tsubasa closed with, “Besides, it’s break time now, Senpai.” She showed a small watch she was wearing and pointed to the clock that read ten o’clock, “here, look.”
Udai felt stupid.
What exactly was he doing?
“Instead of that, what are you doing here, Senpai?”
Udai was almost surprised by the question, never expecting that it would be back, nor ever expecting that he would be able to stand for more than five minutes to interact with anyone other than the volleyball club members.
Sasaki Tsubasa paused to study Udai’s expression for a moment, then threw out the question, “Don’t tell me… you’re the one cutting class here, Senpai! Are you?”
“N-no.”
Wait a minute— of all the things Udai couldn’t understand about this, why did he have to stammer? So what if he got caught? So what if he cut class time?
Sasaki Tsubasa who saw Udai’s reaction, changed her expression, as surprised as he was by the unexpected reaction. She did not expect to see a Senpai being intimidated enough by a joke to stammer. Besides, she also still couldn’t equate this person, the same person she met at the gate when he returned her phone, with the volleyball club member who gave her the wrong cell phone the other day.
Were they really the same person? Were those two the same Udai Tenma that was now standing before her?
“O-oh. W-well, then.”
Udai still had time to glance at Sasaki Tsubasa before he walked away, not missing how something flushed in her eyes as she flinched slightly, as if about to say something that he will never get a chance to hear.
********************************************************
A week on, today the boys volleyball club hosted some guests from Date Tech High School for a scheduled practice match.
Like any other day, the volleyball team stayed on track with morning practice and back to class until the practice match began.
“Oi, Udai!”
Just before Udai left the classroom, one of his classmates intercepted him.
“Today, the volleyball team hosted some guests from Date Tech, is that right?”
“That’s right.” He answered casually.
“Hee... so you’re playing against all of them?”
“That’s right.”
“With those big guys?”
“Yes.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
“You? Against those big guys? Being this small? Are you kidding me?”
“I hope I am kidding you.” Udai didn’t flinch, still casually parrying his classmate.
“W-well, then… will the gymnasium be open to the public?”
“Yes, it will.”
“Then... I’ll go watch. We’ll go. I’ll watch how you’ll play against those big guys of Date Tech. No problem, right? Or are you scared?”
“No.”
Udai walked away after saying that. He did not believe in others, but he believed in himself that he would play as usual regardless of whoever or how many people came to watch him. After all, this time, he would just work hard as usual to maintain his position as a starting player, and his honor as an ace, the ace.
The scheduled practice match began with the familiar faces of the Date Tech High School boys' volleyball team.
The school, famous for their 'Iron Wall', has one of the highest block rates in the entire prefecture, if not the whole of Japan.
Today, their blockers vowed to stop every Karasuno’s wing spiker in the aerial battle, and Udai was certainly no exception. Being the ace means carrying the burden of being marked by blockers, the burden of having to perform as the main scoring machine of a lineup of wing spikers, and also, bearing the weight of every toss at some crucial times. In a matchup against a high-blocking team like Date Tech High School, every point weighs differently, and Udai knows it.
Udai knew that the iron wall across the net was his biggest obstacle, and he knew that he didn’t have an effective weapon to fight with them. He knew that from any perspective, he was at a disadvantage of being much smaller than his tall and bulky opponents, but his coach, Ukai Ikkei’s words saved him before he could drown himself in self-destruction.
“Volleyball is a sport where you never look down. It’s a sport where you always keep your heads up, and look forward to a way to fight.”
The practice match began with a briefing by each coach of the teams.
“Oi, ace!”
One of Karasuno’s starting players from the second year lineup called out. Udai turned without saying anything, waiting for what the other boy was going to say.
His smile grew when he saw Udai, the boy who is a 187 cm middle blocker. “As always, we have high hopes for you. Please don’t disappoint our expectations.”
“Hey, don’t make him feel burdened with his role by saying such things!” The Libero, a pale-haired boy from the third-year lineup said. He turned to Udai, “Don’t worry about it too much. Udai, you just need to play as usual. Don’t worry about the block, I’ll be right behind for a follow when you go up for a spike.”
“As expected of our handsome libero, Tokito-san!” One of the first-year starting players chimed in, a wing spiker like Udai.
“But really, Date Tech will forever be a troublesome opponent for our ace. I’m just concerned about the spikers, especially the ace. That’s why I gave him encouragement to get him a little more excited.”
“Hell, yeah. You sure it wasn’t pressure, though, Sakuma?”
“Hee? Of course not, Tokito-san. It’s a form of motivation— well... unless our ace is scared,” the middle blocker, Sakuma, turned to Udai. With a smirk, he asked, “Don’t tell me, are you scared, ace?”
Udai curled up a smile, not realizing until he saw the starting players were a little taken aback by what they were witnessing.
“Breaking through three-men blocks is the ace’s role, and something I’ve done many times. There’s no way I’m scared.”
The starting players were stunned by Udai’s statement. His last sentence brought a blizzard of coldness that sent shivers down to their spines.
“I didn’t expect anything about being scared when dealing with three-men blocks even if they are Date Tech. I’m going to play and score points for the team.”
In Udai’s eyes, confidence sparkled like a burning fire. Right now, there was nothing scarier than staring into his eyes.
The middle blocker, Sakuma, grinned, “Heeh… you’re fine, aren’t you?”
Udai smiled back at Sakuma, “Of course. You’d better say you’re fine against a 190cm wing spiker, too.”
Sakuma childishly replied while exclaiming, “Oi! Ain’t no way I’ll be losing to a first year!”
Udai chuckled, one of the rare things that never failed to surprise the club members. However, for the team members, seeing Udai Tenma this relaxed before a match was more or less a threat.
His laughter could be briefly interpreted as a warning: I’m in my prime condition to score points for the team, so everyone better be on top of their game.
For the first years, it was a blessing. Because they got to see Udai Tenma, the ace, at the top of his game in the match.
Before long, the captain rejoined and announced that they would receive the ball first.
“Karasuno!!! Fight!!!” — and the practice match began.
True to his word, Udai did his job as the ace by breaking through the famous Date Tech three-men block and winning the aerial battle by scoring a block-out from Date Tech or launching attacks between the hands of the blockers.
Today, more than usual, Udai could see across the net more clearly. His concentration did not fade even though he was laughing or chatting casually with his team mates until the match ended.
The practice match with Date Tech High School ended in a 2-0 victory for Karasuno. Udai earned two service aces with spike serves and scored many points through block outs, as well as a straight spike to close out the final set point.
After the practice match ended, the gymnasium was kind of crowded. It wasn’t that Udai didn’t realize that his classmates had actually come to watch his match, he just didn’t care that they did.
“Oi! Udai deme!”
A familiar voice called out from the second floor, Udai turned his head and saw his classmates lined up there.
“What the hell was that!? You can really jump high and take on those big guys!”
For a moment, the world stopped and focused on what Udai’s classmate was saying.
“Are you really that good at volleyball? You should have said it sooner!”
Sakuma, the middle blocker, replied on behalf of Udai, “And what of it? Did he surprise you guys?”
Udai glanced at Sakuma without saying anything.
“Hell, yeah! He’s so fucking great that I’m close to dying for being so surprised!”
That half-cursed sentence made Sakuma and the rest of the volleyball team laugh.
“Did you see that? That’s our left’s power.”
Udai didn’t feel that Sakuma should say that given that this was just a practice match. But anyway, they still won this one straight 2-0 against Date Tech High School.
“Oi, Udai!”
Udai turned back to his classmate, this time answering, “What?” But in a lower voice.
“You fought the tall guys from Date Tech and made them look like nothing, what are you, a giant?”
“Giant?” Udai frowned.
It didn't make sense. With a body this small? A giant?
“He’s too small to be called a giant!” The captain, Kawada, answered that one.
Udai turned to the captain, agreeing with his words.
“Leave it alone! Isn’t that great? Having more than enough strength to take on three tall guys from Date Tech... he looks like a giant!”
Udai turned back to his classmate.
“Then what of it, giant-power-in-a-small-body?”
“Kawada-san, that’s too long.”
“Kawada, you really suck at making up some nicknames.”
“Ano na omaera, I’ve tried my fucking best here.”
“That’s not bad.”
Their coach, Ukai Ikkei’s voice distracted Udai and the others. The middle-aged man rolled a crooked smile as he looked at Udai, “Giant power in a small body... just like you.”
Udai had nothing good to say except a small mutter of — “Thank you…” under his breath.
“I know!”
Their attention was again diverted by Udai’s classmate who called out from the second floor.
“Little Giant! Udai Tenma is a Little Giant!”
Udai gasped, startled by the strange sensation he felt inside himself after his classmate gave him an unfamiliar nickname but... seemed to be connected to something inside him.
Behind him, Ukai Ikkei, the coach, laughed, savoring each word in a pleasant tone. “Little Giant, huh? Not bad.”
The Little Giant was born on that day. One afternoon in the gymnasium of Karasuno High School. He was born from the perfect embodiment of a massive force of a giant in the relatively small body of a boy called Udai Tenma.
Before Udai could properly register everything, the people in the gymnasium that day, starting with all the club members, and anyone who listened to his classmate’s ridiculous declaration, began to recognize him as The Little Giant of Karasuno.
“The Little Giant... oi, oi, oi, that name is pretty cool, isn’t it?”
Udai ignored the commotion going on behind him, spreading his gaze to the second floor, about to return to his classmates, but what he caught instead was the familiar face of Sasaki Tsubasa who immediately straightened up when he saw her.
Her eyes sparkled when their eyes came in contact, making Udai frown, and almost tilting his head. Then again, Sasaki Tsubasa showed her phone and waved at him.
Should I wave my hand too?
It had been a week since they last saw each other and Tsubasa had accidentally caught him cutting class and drawing in the back corridor, making a total of two weeks since the switched phone incident. Udai almost questioned how he could meet her here again if he didn’t remember that the gymnasium would be open to the public for any practice matches with other schools.
Although it seemed like things were starting to connect for them since the switched phone incident, Udai had no time to think about anything when the captain’s voice echoed out ordering them to gather and send their guest off.
********************************************************
Tokyo, present day
In his little studio filled with stacks of papers, Udai was transfixed when he rediscovered the notebook he had hidden from Akaashi that night, drowning in memories of the past that flooded his head, leaving his deadline to be met in two days.
Before he knew it, he had taken himself way too far down the memory lane in his head from each sheet of the notebook that contained his scribbles and drawings on high school days. And before he knew it, he had neglected his work for quite some time.
Oh, Sasaki Tsubasa and her influence in his life was indeed huge. However, it was forced to end when his phone rang.
The deafening ring of his cell phone made Udai jump in surprise, finally realizing that he had let his guard down.
The word Akaashi Keiji on his phone screen made him immediately rush to take the call, quickly turning on the tab and starting to outline something he should have been doing.
“Oh? Akaashi-san, moshi moshi! It’s Udai here.”
———————————————————————
“Good afternoon, Udai-san. I’m calling to make sure that you’re staying on track with the new volume.”
————————————————————————
“O-oh! Of course I’m working on that. Very hard. Really hard.”
Udai laughed, trying to sound confident to trick Akaashi. But laughing was the wrong choice, because his laughter had become way too awkward to be believable. Then he’s busted.
————————————————————————
“This time, how many hours did you abandon your tab to daydream about someone else’s script that could have been better if you had written it, Udai-san?”
————————————————————————
It was indeed one of Udai’s bad habits that Akaashi was very familiar with. This time, however, although Akaashi was right about Udai neglecting his work on the tab to daydream, it was not about any script.
But still, half of it, Akaashi guessed it perfectly.
Udai shuddered in horror, unconsciously saying under his breath to Akaashi on the other end of the line. “What the hell? Is he a shaman?”
When Akaashi sighed, Udai immediately covered his mouth, accidentally nudging the tab.
————————————————————————
“I can hear you very clearly, Udai-san.”
————————————————————————
“Alright alright, my bad.” Udai said in a tone that sounded like he was wincing.
Then he stopped, frozen.
————————————————————————
“Which part of it?”
————————————————————————
When Udai realized, he seemed to have accidentally closed the window of his unsaved work. His entire work on the last part of the latest volume of his manga is gone. In shock, his voice caught in his throat. His mouth gaped: desperation welled up in his eyes.
What a beautiful day to mess things up yet he did.
He is doomed.
————————————————————————
“Udai-san? Are you still there?”
————————————————————————
Udai immediately end the call just when Akaashi was calling out, ignoring him completely. Why would he care when he just created for himself, another mess?
Oh, What a beautiful misfortune!
Udai sat formally, very quietly behind his desk.
Placing the pen on the table, his hands met his head slowly. His eyes resignedly stared at the blank screen of his tab. A second later, Udai yelled while pulling his hair as he cursed himself with all kinds of words calling out to his own stupidity.
Another of Udai Tenma’s weaknesses was that he would drag on little things like this.
About thirty minutes after that, Akaashi came to check on him at the apartment, afraid that something had happened to the artist.
Akaashi was relieved when Udai was still there to open the door, as it meant nothing dangerous happened to him. But seeing how lethargic Udai looked, completely lackluster, almost lost, with a mumbling mouth, Akaashi’s strong hunch told him that something bad’s happening.
“Udai-san? What’s wrong?” Akaashi frowned, briefly peeking inside Udai’s apartment.
Udai immediately put on a resigned face in front of Akaashi.
Once again, Akaashi asked, this time looking more concerned. “What’s going on?”
“Akaashi-san....” Udai called out to the editor languidly, his expression pitiable.
“What am I gonna do about this?”
“About what— what is going on, Udai-san?”
“What am I gonna do about this?”
Akaashi sighed, “First of all, please explain your situation—”
“What am I gonna do about this?” Udai’s voice is getting more and more pitiable, louder.
“Please understand that I won’t be able to comprehend anything, let alone know what to do to help if you don’t explain the whole situation properly—”
“What am I gonna do about this?” Udai sounded even more pleading.
Akaashi almost lost his temper, “Can you stop that and get to the point, please?”
Udai jumped in before Akaashi even got to the end of his sentence, “I lost the final draft for the latest volume of Zomb'ish!”
It took Akaashi three seconds longer to digest what he had just heard. “Everything?”
“Everything—”
“Everything!?” Akaashi exclaimed.
Udai swore that it was the loudest he had ever heard of Akaashi Keiji.
Udai quickly shook his head, “No. Not everything. Not the whole thing. Just the ending. Really, I’m actually fine.”
“How can you say you’re fine after losing the manuscript for the final part of the latest volume of your manga?”
“Iya— I mean—”
“Did someone hack your computer?”
“Hack my computer? No—”
Akaashi took out his phone, “I’ll call someone to handle that.”
“No, no. Akaashi-san,” Udai quickly hold Akaashi’s hand. “My computer is fine. My tab is fine. All of it— all of them are fine. Nothing was hacked and needs to be dealt with. I just accidentally closed the unsaved draft’s window.”
There was silence. Udai and Akaashi locked gazes.
Akaashi pulled his hand from Udai and adjusted his glasses. “So…”
Udai screwed up. He knew. And for sure, his Mr. Perfectionist Editor would not tolerate anything about it.
“I swear I didn’t mean to do anything about what’s happening. Humans make mistakes sometimes, Akaashi-san.”
“And you lost the draft of the final part of the new volume of your manga.”
“Right.” Udai nodded in agreement. Akaashi had a point.
“Your deadline comes in two days.”
“You know, Akaashi-san, In a situation like this—”
“All you have to do is get inside and start working on it all over again.” Akaashi cut him off quickly. His last words was a nightmare. “I’ll be here to make sure you don’t dwell like the world is falling apart. Let’s get to work, Udai-san.”
Akaashi walked away leaving Udai at the entrance and fit himself to some slippers on the entrance.
Udai the followed not long after, walking languidly while staring at Akaashi’s back, “This isn’t what I expected at all.”
When Akaashi turned, Udai straightened up and stopped.
“But publishing new volumes on time is what your fans expected from you, Udai-san.”
Akaashi had a very good point right there.
Udai stood up straight and formal, both hands clasped in front of his body, as he said, “Understood, sir.”
Akaashi sighed, “Let’s get to work, Udai-san.”
“Yes, sir.”
next chapter coming soon.

apartment!
instead of, you know, actually writing the scenes for the AU, I spent all day making an apartment design for wyrtt!Ranboo and wyrtt!Tubbo! Tubbo moves in with Ranboo a couple chapters into the fic and this is what they live in! I drew this on my tablet, so the lines aren’t perfect but I am really happy with how it looks!!
Tumblr media
[Photo Description: A digital pencil drawing of an apartment. There are three rooms: a very large kitchen that connects directly into the living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. There is a spiral staircase in the top right, and large windows all over the right wall. In the bottom left is the living room, there is a tv, couch, armchair, dog bed, and a large collection of plants. There is also a dining room table and benches. The kitchen is a standard kitchen.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the first floor!! Ranboo’s room is in the bottom right corner. The kitchen is rather large because of how much Ranboo enjoys to cook!
There are carpets everywhere because of the fact that the floor is a gray concrete and is very cold at all times.
The circle at the top right corner is the spiral staircase that leads to the loft area, which is where Tubbo lives.
Tumblr media
[Photo Description: The only part that has changed is the top half of the drawing, which is now a loft bedroom that takes up one-third of the apartment. It has a bed, carpets, chest, desk, and wardrobe.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The loft is where Tubbo lives! It is absolutely covered in carpets because he hates how cold the floor is.
The loft overlooks the rest of the apartment, and when Tubbo moved in, he and Ranboo hung a large blanket across the top of Ranboo’s room for privacy reasons! Tubbo’s loft looks over the rest of the apartment and has a railing on the edge.
His favorite thing to do is drop blankets and pillows over the side for movie night with Tommy and Ranboo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This took a couple hours to do and was so much fun to work on!!
Jonghyun/Taemin; Starchild; PG
au where jonghyun is a tiny little fallen star and taemin is a human
hey don’t forget to check out my favorite jonghyuns challenge this month :)
"Can you take me to the bedroom?" He asks. "I want to nap."
"Yeah, of course," Taemin says. No problem. He takes his headphones out, puts his laptop onto the couch cushion next to him, and offers Jonghyun his hand. With a polite word of thanks, Jonghyun steps on. He's warm, almost too hot to the touch, and practically weightless.
Well, not practically weightless. Entirely weightless. The only pressure that Taemin feels on his palm is from the weight of the quilt. The only thing keeping Jonghyun from floating up to the ceiling is the quilt. Star problems, Taemin guesses.
The sigh of relief that Taemin lets out when he closes his front door behind him is, as always, his favorite breath of the day. He leans back against the door for a minute, rubbing his hands over his face. Finally. Finally he gets to pretend the entire rest of the world doesn't exist until he has to go back to work tomorrow morning.
He rubs his hands over his face, through his hair, drops his work bag next to the door and tosses his wallet on top of it. Then he bends down and digs inside of it for a moment to pull out the leftover fries he got from the drive-thru on the way home. Munching them on the way to the fridge, he gets himself a soda and then makes his way to the living room.
There, like he expected, is Jonghyun in his usual spot on the arm of the couch. The single patch of a quilt that Taemin cut out for him is wrapped around his shoulders, the earbuds that Taemin fashioned into a tiny set of headphones are over his ears, and Taemin’s tablet is resting in front of him. He uses his whole hand on the touchscreen , pressing and swiping around the surface. When Taemin walks in, he looks up, golden eyes big in his small face.
"Welcome home," he says quietly. It's not anything new from the past couple of months that he's lived here, but it brings a smile to Taemin anyway. There's nothing more comforting to him than his little star friend.
 "Thanks," he says. He sits himself down on the couch and grabs his laptop from the coffee table. With one hand he opens it up and with the other hand he offers his carton of fries to Jonghyun. "Want one?" He asks.
 "No thank you," Jonghyun replies, not looking up from the tablet. Taemin shrugs. That's what he expected. Jonghyun doesn't need to eat food, and so he usually doesn't, but he does have the ability to so Taemin still likes to offer. Just in case.
While his laptop is still loading, he peeks over at the tablet.Jonghyun is in the music app again, organizing songs into different playlists. He's been very interested in the task ever since Taemin first showed him the app. Since then, he's been listening to and downloading all kinds of songs that are far from Taemin’s own tastes. Taemin thinks that it's one of the only human things that Jonghyun really, genuinely enjoys.
 All of his playlists have names, but none of them make any sense to Taemin except for one: the one that's just his name. That one is the one that Jonghyun shares to his music player every couple of weeks, and that one is the one that is full of songs that Jonghyun thinks Taemin would like. And on each song, he's been correct so far. Taemin doesn't know how he does it.
The last time he got some new songs was just yesterday, though, and he doesn't want to be nosy, so he looks back to his own laptop. Wiggling an earbud into the ear that isn't facing Jonghyun, he draws circles on his touchpad until the laptop has fully started up and then clicks right to his video subscriptions to unwind.
A while later– he's not sure how long—he's pulled out of a string of dance practice videos by the softest tap on his shoulder. He taps the spacebar to pause and looks up. Jonghyun is standing now, holding his quilt square around himself and looking at Taemin with those soft eyes of his. The tablet is turned off and tucked safely onto the end table next to the couch.
"Can you take me to the bedroom?" He asks. "I want to nap."
"Yeah, of course," Taemin says. No problem. He takes his headphones out, puts his laptop onto the couch cushion next to him, and offers Jonghyun his hand. With a polite word of thanks, Jonghyun steps on. He's warm, almost too hot to the touch, and practically weightless.
Well, not practically weightless. Entirely weightless. The only pressure that Taemin feels on his palm is from the weight of the quilt. The only thing keeping Jonghyun from floating up to the ceiling is the quilt. Star problems, Taemin guesses.
He carries Jonghyun to the bedroom carefully, roll stepping and holding his wrist with his free hand to make it as smooth and steady as possible for him. As they get closer to the bedroom and farther away from the lamplight of the living room, the warm glow that Jonghyun emits becomes more noticeable. He's a little ball of light in Taemin's hand , soft and cozy, and when he steps into the room he doesn't bother to flip the light switch.
Jonghyun gives him another quiet thank you when he sets him down on top of the dresser. Over the past couple of months, the two of them have been working together to turn it into more of a comfortable living space for the little star. Clearing Taemin's stuff off of the top, emptying out the top left drawer, filling it up with Jonghyuns new things. Taemin even pulled on the knowledge of the one semester of woodshop class he took in high school to install a little trap door and ladder that goes from the top of the dresser into the drawer so Jonghyun wouldn't have to ask Taemin to let him in every time.
He's working on creating a nice Jonghyun size wooden house to sit on top of the dresser too, but for now, he's just nestled a nice comfortable cat bed in front of the window for him. Jonghyun has also made himself a little nest from a couple of Taemin's old scarves and cut off sleeves inside of his drawer, and that's where he's going now. Taemin opens his trapdoor for him and, as his glowing little head disappears through the hole, smiles, "sleep well."
Glancing back over his shoulder as he leaves the room, he smiles again at the nice orange glow he can see through the crack around the drawer.
Then, yawning, he heads back to the couch to finish watching his videos. He hits up his friends when he's done, popping on his headset and turning on the tv when they convince him to play a couple of video games. Then it's time for him to throw something together for dinner, and then to get outside and jog around the block before it gets scary late instead of cool late. Once he gets back, he does his daily stretches and then sits in the middle of the living room with his face in his hands for a solid 5 minutes before he decides that he doesn't want to do the rest of his workout and just goes straight to making himself his bedtime smoothie.
 With that, he peeks carefully into the bedroom and then walks in when he finds that Jonghyun has finished his nap. He's out of his drawer, in his cat bed, chin in his arms as he gazes out the window. He glances at Taemin for a second before looking back outside. Taemin grabs his rolly chair from his desk to be next to his dresser so he can look out the window with him for a little bit.
"Want some?" He asks, offering his smoothie. Jonghyun looks at it quietly. He takes his time to think, like always, and then lifts his eyes and asks, "what is it?”
"Um," Taemin says. "Banana, strawberry yogurt, cinnamon, vanilla protein powder, milk." He swirls it around the cup a little bit as he lists off the ingredients. "It's a little thick," he adds. It was a big banana. Again, Jonghyun takes a while to answer. Taemin pulls out his phone after a minute to keep himself entertained while he waits.
It unsettled him a little bit, at first. Jonghyuns tendency to really take his time considering his replies. At first, Taemin thought Jonghyun was ignoring him, or that he had upset the little star in some way. It's a special kind of silence that Jonghyun has. Not a non-verbal kind, exactly. It took Taemin a long time to finally understand what it was.
It's the kind of silence that stems naturally from infinite patience. The kind of time needed to consider from someone that is used to spending an infinite amount of time doing nothing but infinitely considering. When Taemin thinks about it, for someone that only fell down from the sky 3 months ago, the speed at which Jonghyun thinks things through now has to be off the charts.
Eventually, he feels Jonghyuns small hand on his finger and when he looks up, Jonghyun nods at him. Taemin smiles back, humming, "mmkay.”
He opens Jonghyuns drawer and pulls out one of the tiny ceramic mugs he ordered for him online. Carefully, he pours a couple drops of smoothie into it and hands it to Jonghyun. Jonghyun takes it, sniffs it, and then tries a tiny, hesitant sip. Then he takes another, and then he turns back to the window, head nestled back into his arms, still holding on to the mug.
He likes it.
Proud of himself, somehow, Taemin smiles into his cup as he takes his own drink. It's like every time that he shows Jonghyun a human thing and Jonghyun likes it he wins an award.
 He scoots closer to the window on his rolly chair, putting his cup on it so he doesn't have to hold it. Outside, the sun is long gone and the only light comes from the street lamp on the sidewalk. Wind rustles the leaves of his growing pepper plants and the neighbor’s big magnolia tree. Every now and again a car or someone walking their dog will make their way past the window. In the sky, stars twinkle faintly between patches of void.
Taemin finds himself transfixed on those for a while. Even after he finishes his smoothie and puts it off to the side, he puts his chin in his hand and stares up at each of them. Each one of them,a tiny pinprick of gas. Each one of them a distant little soul.
He glances down at Jonghyun. His attention is fixed upward, steady, resolute. Not once does he lower it to look at anything else on the ground. If Taemin leans just right, he can see the stars reflected in his golden eyes.
"Do you miss them?"
 The question comes out of him before he realizes that he was thinking it. Once he processes it, though, he knows that he meant it and he lets it hang between them without taking it back.
Jonghyun turns to look at him slowly. He blinks those big eyes of his just as slowly. Taemin meets his gaze calmly.
Jonghyun doesn't often answer questions about being a star. Almost never, actually. But he never gets upset at Taemin for asking, either.
It's a long moment that they sit there, the two of them, looking at each other. Then Jonghyun turns away, looking back at the stars. "They don't miss me," he says.
 And the fact that he answered, let alone that quickly, let alone with something like that, is what surprises Taemin. So much that he replies immediately himself without even taking a second to think it through: "Well, there's an infinite amount of them. Statistically, some of them have to."
Jonghyun doesn't respond. Even to acknowledge that he heard Taemin. Taemin scratches his cheek, turning back to the stars himself. That's fair, he guesses. Except, he realizes after a moment, "that wasn't my question, though." he says it to the window, mumbles it more to himself than to Jonghyun. He doesn't expect an answer. He doesn't get one, either.
Not until over an hour later when he's finally nestling himself underneath his bed covers. He plugs his phone into the speakers on his headboard and opens up his podcast app, selecting the soft D&D one that he usually falls asleep to. Then he hands it up to Jonghyun, letting him add whatever podcasts he likes into the queue for after Taemin falls asleep. Before he can take his hand away, Jonghyun gently touches his finger.
"I don't know," he says, and then, when Taemin frowns at him, confused, adds, "if i miss them or not. I would have to think about it more." He opens his mouth again after that, like he has more to say, but he hesitates. It's another long minute before he says, "I do know that i'm happier down here with you, though."
"Oh," Taemin replies. He turns a yawn into his pillow. "Well. Thank you. And," he says. He doesn't really know how to reply to that and he's a little too tired to be having a conversation like this anyway. "Take your time, little star."
Closing his eyes, rubbing his cheek into his pillow, he doesn't see Jonghyun nod, but he does hear and smile when he says, "sleep well, little human."
Any Headcanons for movie Sonic?
😱 Head Canons?!😱
I have so many! Like... so many that I prolly won’t remember them all:
I think Sonic had to learn how to speak a new language when he came to Earth. I think that he can still speak in his native tongue, but also speak English.
Sonic LOVES piggy back rides. You can’t change my mind on this. He also likes to ride in a backpack as long as he can stick his head out.
Sonic does not know what a normal Earth hedgehog looks like. He thinks that cacti, hairbrushes, pin cushions and a pineapples are Earth hedgehogs.
Sonic has an assortment of costumes that he will wear around town. On top of that, he has names for every one of his alliances. For example, he has one called “Cherry Dude the Real Estate Agent.” Another one that he is “The Milkman,” who delivers milk and happens to be a doctor. This one he’s really proud of, he has one allias of a spoiled rich 20-something-year-old named “Jean Ralphio.”
Sonic loves eating slugs, chili dogs, donuts, fruits, veggies, bugs, dinosaur chicken nuggets, and golden sticks (French fries).
Sonic loves to doodle and draw pictures. He will leave his pieces of art all around the house and hang it on the fridge. Maddie has made it a habit to save every piece of art and Tom has a drawing of this on his desk at work.
He also has a composition notebook filled with doodle and a journal of what his life has been like so far since living with The Wachowskis.
Sonic loves flowers and puts them in his quills.
Sonic will collect random things around town. Why? Because why not? Sees a fork—thinks it’s a hairbrush. Sees a stop sign—a new poster for his room. Shiny blue rock thing that sparks electric energy—steals it and keeps it to give to Maddie on Mother’s Day. It’s very reminiscent of The Little Mermaid.
On top of collecting random stuff, if Sonic sees something odd and likes it, he’ll give it to Tom and Maddie as small gifts. He’ll put a bow on it and leave it on their bed.
Sonic LOVES to go shoe shopping. Any time Maddie and/or Tom mentions of shoes, Sonic will beg to go to the mall in Springvalley and go to the PUMA, Addidas, and Nike stores.
The first time going into a shoe store, Sonic cried over how beautiful it looked and with how many shoes he could wear and keep.
Sonic will wear clothes, just not pants. He claims all the time that his fur is “like the softest pair of pajamas that you’ll ever own.”
Sonic’s favorite breakfast foods are pancakes, cereal with spiders in it, fruits with donuts, and bacon.
He’s still afraid of humans. He’s afraid that the humans will turn him into the USA government one day, but he doesn’t talk about it. Tom and Maddie know that he has this fear of humans still, but they try to work with him more on not being afraid to engage with them.
Sonic does, actually, see a therapist.
As much as Sonic loves Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady, he’s afraid to get really close to them. He’s afraid that if he grows attached to them, he’ll have to leave and go to the Mushroom Planet. Tom and Maddie work with him on assuring him that it’s okay to be open with people and form connections.
He is friends with The President of the United States (The Rock), as well as Taylor Swift.
Sonic loves baseball. He’s the smallest on the team, but he’s the best batter that the team has had in years. Tom is the assistant coach to the team, Wade and Maddie help as volunteers.
Sonic has both ADHD and PTSD.
Sonic is best friends with Bigfoot. Whenever Sonic talks to Tom, Wade, JoJo, Maddie, and Rachel about Bigfoot—he claims his name is Harry—no one seems to believe him... not even Crazy Carl believes him.
Sonic will dance and sing to himself when he’s happy. He’ll dance in front of others, but he won’t sing.
I have a firm belief that he’s either 12-13. James Marsden said in an interview that Sonic was twelve and Jeff Fowler said in his interview that Sonic was thirteen. This is pretty much up for interpretation.
Sonic loves to go to work with both Tom and Maddie. He has made a calendar for himself in what days he can go to work for what parent.
Sonic will run around town and do errands for Tom and Maddie. He’s their little delivery boy.
Sonic is very conscious of being adopted. He knows that Tom and Maddie want him in his life, but the reality of the situation is still surreal and dream like to him. He wants to call them “mom and dad,” but he doesn’t know if it would seem appropriate.
Sonic is Jewish.
If you place your cellphone, laptop, tablet, or anything electronic based on top of Sonic’s head, Sonic is able to charge it.
Sonic sees JoJo more as a big sister than a cousin.
Sonic absolutely HATES it when people ask him if he speaks “animal.” Just because he lived in a forest for his whole life doesn’t mean that he knows how to talk to ALL types of animals. Just forest creatures and household pets.
As of now, before he notices them more, his main enemies are The Springvalley Sluggers, à squirrel in the backyard, and his other next door neighbor.
Sonic is the main reason why a majority of the traffic signs around town are missing. He loves them and uses them to decorate his Gremlin cave in the attic.
Sonic can purr... but it’s on a rare occasion.
Sonic loves coffee... but Tom and Maddie don’t give it to him a whole lot.
Tom and Maddie have several photos of Sonic on their cellphone.
Whenever Sonic travels, he brings a camera with him to take photos of stuff. Both Tom and Maddie have asked if he does it to document his travels. In a sense, he does, but with the spare rings that he has, he sends them to his island—from what he can remember of it—in hopes that Longclaw can see that he’s alright.
Sonic doesn’t remember much of his island anymore, but he remembers some details.
He’ll tell you, “no, I don’t remember them,” but he remembers fragments of his biological parents. All he remembers is a river, an ambush, Longclaw, and a basket.
Sonic is VERY protective of his family. Whenever someone pokes fun at them, even if it’s supposed to not be harmful, Sonic is the first to react and protect them.
Sonic will curl up next to Tom and Maddie and sleep on them when he’s tired. He feels protected and tells them both that they feel like his people. He feels safe with them.
Once a week on Friday’s, Tom, Wade, and Sonic go to elementary schools and talk about DARE with the kids. Sonic gets a huge kick out of being in the classroom with Donut Lord and Wade. He often sits in the group with the kids and listens to the two talk.
Sonic gets forehead kisses, head pats, ear rubs, and a kiss on his paws. Maddie will kiss his paw, put his glove back on, and say, “you have my heart in your paws. It’s there forever.” Tom just gives him a head rub and tell him that he loves him in his own special way.
I have a lot more, but this is what I could think of on the top of my head. If I remember them all I’ll reblog... if you’re all interested.😅
SHSL Hope’s Peak AU Labs
I spent hours on this please look at it
Because this is my AU and I do what I want, Hope’s Peak Academy has labs! However, due to number of students at Hope’s Peak, they have to share. Each student is assigned to a lab once they’re enrolled, and they spend most of their time there. Some labs (SHSL Zoology Lab) are open for everyone to see, and others (SHSL Fighters Lab) are not.
Some students (Himiko, Ryota) spend more time in other people’s labs than their own, or choose other labs as ‘theirs’ even though they’re technically assigned to a certain lab. The staff doesn’t really care as long as they’re developing their talents and stuff.
(I put the graduated class and teachers separately, at the bottom)
There are 12 main labs, as well as some assorted groups of people, and those who don’t have labs. These labs are:
- SHSL Technology Lab - SHSL Leadership Lab - SHSL Entertainers Lab - SHSL Fighters Lab - SHSL Zoology Lab - SHSL Athletic Lab - SHSL Costume Lab - SHSL Detective Lab - SHSL Magicks Lab - SHSL Luck Lab - SHSL Creativity Lab - SHSL Science Lab
Ive got lots of details on each lab, but its long, so ill put it under the cut. (names that are in brackets mean that the character is either not officially part of the lab, or doesn’t really spend time there despite being part of the lab)
Ultimate Technology Lab: Chihiro, Miu, Kiibo, Souda, Chiaki. (Ryota)
The room is very industrial, pipes in the ceiling, cement floor, grey brick walls, florescent lighting.
It's a huge mess.
Theres wires everywhere, all across the floor with basically no organization.
A big shelf of scrap parts, metal, oil, mainly stuff for Miu and Souda to work with.
One corner is semi closed off and has a dozen screens. Thats where Chiaki and Chihiro go. Chiaki has every game system in that corner.
The screen corner has a carpet, pillows and beanbags. Also a gaming chair that only Chiaki is allowed to sit in.
Kiibo likes to chat with Alter Ego.
They stuck a few cots in there because someone always ends up asleep while working on a program or invention or something, so they get tossed onto the bed.
Ryota isn’t part of this lab, but spends a surprising amount of time there with Chiaki and Chihiro, so they set up a table for him in the screen corner with a drawing tablet.
He cries when he finds out, and hangs around there much more often afterwords.
All together, everyone in the tech lab is really close to each other, they get along great, and sometimes work on big group projects.
Ultimate Leadership Lab: Kokichi, Sonia, Fuyuhiko, Byakuya. (Mondo, Taka, and Nekomaru)
The leaders lab is the most complicated
There are a total 7 students who were catagorized as leaders by hopes peak staff. They aren’t all comdapiable with each other, and they find that out pretty quick.
So they split up.
Mondo and Taka went together because they’re dating, and Nekomaru went to the Athletic Lab.
The lab isn’t really a lab, more of a meeting room. There’s a big table in the centre that everyone sits at.
One wall is a touch screen
One wall is a white board
One is a blackboard
And one is a corkboard
Sonia sits in front of the cork board, Kokichi sits in front of the white board, Fuyuhiko sits in front of the blackboard, and Byakuya gets the touch screen
They share the walls, but each of them mainly uses the one they sit in front of.
The room is used by the student council to plan meetings, but the main 4 who use the leaders lab pretty much *are* the student council.
Meetings with the entire student body are held in the entertainers lab since it has a stage and enough seating for everyone.
Cork board has pictures of everyone taken by Koizumi, schedule for the school, a few other things Sonia likes to hang there, like letters from her family. it’s lined with LED lights.
White board is 90% doodles by Kokichi, and whoever came in there. There’s also a few stray magnets.
Blackboard has notes on students, mainly to make sure ppl are turning in homework, or not getting bullied/being bullies.
The touchscreen is synced to Byakuya’s laptop. School files are kept on there.
Lighting is on a Slider so can be dim/low for the touch screen. Also Kokichi just likes the lighting darker.
Kokichi makes Sonia an honorary member of dice and Sonia is thrilled by this fact
Sonia is the most sociable so she handles most of the students problems, Byakuya schedules and talks to the staff, Fuyuhiko deals with the underground stuff and the general student body, Kokichi is comic relief and makes sure the actual council doesn’t keel over dead from overworking.
Sonia is always first to arrive, being 13 minutes early to every occasion.
They have meetings regularly.
Altogether, they get along well, not as well as the tech lab but pretty good! No one really expected them to get along as well at they do. Since they’re all focused on the common goal of leading the student body, they work together, and they balance each other out pretty nicely.
(Mondo and Taka)
They couldn’t convince the school to give them another lab
They hang out in Mondo’s dorm room.
They don’t do anything.
Taka however help Fuyuhiko with a lot of his policing, and spends a bunch of time in the halls helping people get to class and directing visitors and stuff.
Taka joins the student council for meetings sometimes, they have an extra chair for him.
He spends more time in the halls than planning so he doesn’t really need a lab.
Mondo and Taka are dating, so they get along great.
Ultimate Entertainers Lab: Sayaka, Ibuki, Kaede, Hiyoko, (Himiko)
Himiko was invited, but because she does real magic, she preferred to set up camp in the magick’s lab
The room is basically the music room from THH
There’s a decent amount of instruments and a grand piano on the stage.
How they move the piano back and forth no one knows.
They have a whiteboard with the number of days since Hiyoko has said something mean and gotten kicked out.
That number has never gone over 2
Microphones, a nice light system, very velvety curtains
Nice chairs to watch as well
Backstage is a mess of props and set.
School plays are put on in this lab, and meetings with the whole student body
they also have a projector and do movie nights during spring and winter break, or on weekends!
The entertainers get along pretty well, except Hiyoko. They like to show off their music to each other and play songs together. Sometime they watch Hiyoko dance if she’s being nice.
Ultimate Fighters Lab: Tenko, Peko, Maki, Sakura, Mukuro
Its a BIG room
Theres a whole rack of swords
A bunch of weights
A bunch of guns, locked in a glass case that only Maki and Mukuro have a key too
Knives cupboard, also behind lock and key
The entire room is under lock and key
Theres replica/training versions of each weapon
Luckily no one in the room would share their key, and stealing their key is a BAD idea
Theres a large mat area in the centre
Its got a circle in the middle
They have a first aid kit
Theres a lot of mats
You’d think things would go wrong, but everyone is really nice and loves each other and such
Sometimes they invite other people to work out and such
But its mainly just them
Maki and Mukuro spar together and bond over murder. Peko and Sakura spar together and bond over honour. Tenko vows to protect them all as her blood sisters, and all of them thank her for it despite not needing her help.
They all get along amazingly and are amazing and badass, I love them.
Ultimate Zoology Lab: Gonta, Gundham
Anyone can enter the room during visiting hours
When you enter, its a sitting room with lots of books and chairs and such.
All the animals and bugs are kept in a backroom with the food. Only Gundham and Gonta and whoever they allow are allowed back there.
Gundham doesn’t like to keep animals locked up because ‘wild beast spirits are weakened by the dangerous walls of this academy’
Lots of animal food, research on how to take care of animals, books and things
There are a few animals in there and some bugs, but theres more research then actual animals.
Bunnies, the deva’s stay there sometimes, but rarely cause Gundham gets sad without them, only when they get sick or something.
Theres a patch of grass in there for the animals that eat grass
Its a nice calming place
Lots of animals
Gundham has a therapy dog in there that students can go pet.
Lighting is on a cycle that follows the sun, since thats best for the animals
Gundam brings animals into the sitting room for people to pet (like the therapy dog)
Gonta and Gundham get along really good, they bond over people not understanding them sometimes, and their love of animals. It’s very sweet.
Ultimate Athletic Lab: Aoi, Leon, Hoshi, Akane, (Nekomaru)
Hopes Peak cycles out the equipment depending on the students there that year.
Aoi uses the swimming pool, so its just weights for her and other various training things.
Also a batting cage, mini tennis court, balance beam and rings.
Its a large room.
They also have mats like the fighters.
Altogether, they just do their own things, not really talking to each other.
Ultimate Costume Lab: Junko, Tsumugi, Imposter
Its a really big closet.
A third is replica clothing of other people, a third is costumes, and a third is high fashion
They have to mark things really carefully so Tsumugi doesn’t get mixed up with Imposters stuff
Hifumi hangs around to look at Tsumugi’s costumes. Junko kicks him out a lot.
Theres also a bunch of fabrics and matierials, and a big desk for sewing and such.
Floor length mirrors, one of those thats like 3 mirrors so you can see yourself from every angle.
They don’t really get along... Tsumugi admires Junko a bunch, and Junko doesn’t like anyone. Imposter uses it for storage, and doesn’t spend much time there.
Ultimate Detective Lab: Kyouko, Shuuichi
Literally just the lab from V3
But with the yearbooks for hopes peak
And a computer linked to the hope’s peak database.
Theres not a lot to add here.
But Kyouko and Shuuichi are very close, and help each other out and I must mention that.
Ultimate Magicks Lab: Hagakure, Himiko
Himiko left the entertainers lab and came here to do real magic.
No one is sure what happens in there
Theres props everywhere
And crystals, and various fourtune telling devices
They both have mini booths where they can perform magic and read the future, respectively.
dim lighting, likely string lights or something
They have a fog machine
They have broken it several times
Hagakure takes Himiko in as his little sister and its really sweet. They get along good.
Ultimate Luck Lab: Makoto, Komaeda, and Hajime
A glorified, bulletproof, fireproof, and bomb proof break room. Also a panic room.
Hajime isn’t a strictly a lucky student, but they had no where else to put em so they stuck him with the lucky students. He wanted to be there anyway.
They have a pool table.
None of them know how to play pool.
Well Hajime does, but he doesn’t want to.
They just kinda sit there a lot of the time.
Makoto walks in to see Komaeda and Hajime kissing on the couch and gets really flustered, but it just keeps happening and eventually he gets used to it.
Theres some school books and bean bags in there.
At one point they get a console from Chiaki and play some games.
Nagito’s luck breaks it.
Basically a classroom without any desks.
The three of them get along well! Nagito and Hajime are dating, so Makoto is a bit left out, but the they do some stuff together.
Ultimate Creativity Lab: Koizumi, Angie, Hifumi, Ryota, Touko
The most chaotic lab.
Koizumi uses it for storage and nothing else. There is a little side room she uses as a dark room, but beyond that she hates being in there.
Hifumi had some of his things in there but Koizumi made him take them out for ‘pubic decency’
Its just his drawing tablet now, with a strong password on it.
Ryota has his drawing tablet too
Sometimes they talk, but not for long because Hifumi makes Ryota nervous.
Angie uses the space the most, as she doesn’t fear death and doesn’t care what anyone else does so long as she can paint and things.
It loos basically like v3 but with what I described and mixed with the art room from 1.
Touko has a desk in the corner and she does not use it.
They really don't get along well. No one likes Hifumi, everyone dislikes Touko, Koizumi doesn’t wanna deal with anyone’s bull, Ryota is nervous all the times and these people make it worse so he goes to the tech labs since he’s friends with Chihiro.
Everyone really likes Angie though. Well not Touko, but Angie either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care.
Most of them work in their own rooms and are happy to use the room for storage and let Angie take the space.
Ultimate Sciences Lab: Kaito, Rantaro, Korekiyo
Its actually pretty organized.
Theres a globe, a large map, a travel book, a cork board for Rantaro.
A library full of books on anthropology
Star maps, space stuff
The ceiling is dark, but always has a projection of the night sky that reflects the current position of the stars from where they stand.
They have a bunch of nice comfy chairs
Kaito would spend more time in the gym or pool if he wanted to train, since this lab is more focused on research.
Low lighting, mainly candles.
There’s books for sciences that aren’t Kaito, Rantaro, or Korekiyo’s speciality, sometimes people use them for research.
The detectives come in for research sometimes.
The three of them get along pretty well actually, it’s very nice. They’re close to each other in a unique way, and talk to each other about their problems and things. Very nice.
People who don’t really have a lab:
Celeste: Hangs around the Rec Room. She smuggled in better things to gamble with.
Kirumi: Takes students requests and goes around the school to fulfill them.
Mikan: Works in the Nurse’s Office, taking care of students who get hurt.
Teruteru: Works in the Kitchen, making whatever food he wants and sometimes meals for students who come in asking for food.
Syo: Isn’t allowed a lab.
Graduated Classes:
Daisaku: was in the zoology lab with Gundham. they got along alright, though not as well as Gundham and Gonta.
Ruruka: was in the kitchen, with Teruteru. they did not get along.
Sonosuke: wasn’t really a lab kind of guy. assigned to the tech lab, but didn’t really mesh well with everyone else in there so just didn’t go in. he had a little place to do his smithing off campus.
Seiko: worked in the nurses office with Mikan. they were close, but quiet. Seiko kind of saw Mikan as a little sister.
Teachers and Staff:
None of the teachers have a lab, but they do supervise some.
Chisa teaches her class as normal
Munakata watches the student council
Sakakura watches the fighters and athletes
all of them are extremely proud of their students and would kill for them.
Elementary School Division:
The elementary school doesn’t have labs. However, I feel like this is a good time to mention that Hope’s Peak elementary does take volunteers, and Komaru spends most of her time volunteering at the elementary there.
And I think that covers everything!
I think I've missed a few people, and im not sure where to sort *anyone* from zero, seriously it is very confusing. If there’s anyone I missed you want me to put in lemme know. (also this took hours so please reblog)
and like, thank you to anyone who read through this monster of a post.
In the orphanage Super Nathan stood together with the young girl Lisa in front of the poster of the art miraculous holder looking at it.
„Where did you get that poster?“ Questioned the purple-skinned hero looking down at the blonde.
„Kérine brought it from the school library“ Responded Lisa. „They also have magazines for the students to read and there is a box, where the teachers drop the various posters, that come in the magazines.“
„Ah and so she brought you this one?“
„She brought all superhero ones. The newest one is from Lady Red together with Honey Bee and Miss Vixen with the caption girl power“
„Sounds cool“
„It‘s in the other room over Destiny‘s bed“
„Okay, “ Super Nathan said looking back at the poster of himself. „Would you like me to sign it?“ Questioned the superhero making the girl smile, then Super Nathan drew on his tablet a marker, which appeared in real life, making Lisa applaud.
„Awesome!“ Lisa complimented the superhero, that signed afterward on the poster his superhero name, then closed the marker again and gave it to the girl.
„You can keep it as a souvenir…..or I can draw you something else, what do you think?“ Super Nathan asked earning a nod from the girl.
„Can you draw me a backpack for school inspired by you?“ Questioned Lisa earning a nod from the superhero, that sat down on the bed from the girl starting to do his task on the tablet. Into the room entered Lady Red together with a brown-haired girl, then walked to the second bed, where over the bed hung a poster of her swinging her yo-yo.
„And my poster of you is here, “ The young girl said showing it to the Japanese superheroine.
„Rita, do you want Lady Red to sign the poster?“ Asked the blonde showing to the roommate the marker, then the brunette took the marker and gazed up at the heroine.
„I‘d love to, if you want Rita“ Lady Red responded and the brunette pressed the marker on the hand of the heroine the marker, then Lady Red signed the poster for the girl and handed the marker back to the young girl.
„Thank you, “ Rita said, then looked at Super Nathan drawing the backpack Lisa wished, then he stopped as he was done and a white backpack appeared with the logo of Super Nathan and a small Super Nathan figurine attached to the zipper of the smallest bag of the backpack.
„That‘s amazing!“ Lisa cried grabbing the backpack and hugging it hard. „You‘re the best Super Nathan, “ Lisa said giving Super Nathan a hug shrieking him.
„Aww, “ Lady Red said watching the girl hugging her idol. „You made her so happy“
„I could draw them something special, so they remember us“ Super Nathan suggested the blue-haired heroine.
„Like what?“ Questioned Lady Red making Super Nathan shrug his shoulders.
„Have you got any suggestion?“
„We could ask them?“
„You know, what would be really cool?“ Asked Rita. „If we had a dog“
„A dog?“ Asked Lady Red. „But that‘s a lot of responsibility“
„We could make a schedule of who walks when with the dog, who feeds the dog and when we go to the vet with him“
„Well, you need to ask Madame Livre for the authorization.“ The ladybug miraculous holder mentioned to the girl.
„And you need to find a breeder or a kennel to adopt a dog“
„A kennel would be a better solution, most of them are have been abandoned or been taken away from their old owners and they would feel happier to be in a house full of children, that love and take care of it“
„I‘m going to ask Madame, “ Rita said leaving the superheroes back.
„Is Miss Vixen in the other room?“ Questioned Super Nathan earning a nod from the Japanese girl.
„She‘s helping Kevin with his homework“ Responded the partner, then walked out with Super Nathan at the corridor to the room on the other side, where Kevin sat on the bed together with Miss Vixen solving the task.
„Hey what about a desk or two, where the kids could do their homework?“ Suggested Super Nathan.
„I think they use the dinner table to do their homework?“ Responded Lady Red.
„What about better bed slats for the mattress?“ Suggested Super Nathan holding on the metal-made slat.
„They could also have like in Japan futons“
„How do they look like?“ Questioned Super Nathan.
„The slat is usually made off wood and about 10 centimeters high and then you only have the futon over it. It‘s similar to a duvet“
„Okay, but I still need to see a picture, cause I don‘t know the looks of it“
„I could draw it if you want to“ Suggested Lady Red.
„I would let you, but it doesn‘t work, when someone else does it“
„Really?“ Asked Lady Red surprised.
„Yeah come on try it, “ Super Nathan said holding to Lady Red the stylon, which she picked, then she drew a cube, afterward he received an error message on the tab.
„Error: User couldn't be identified“ Read Lady Red out loud. „Now that‘s a strange thing“
„I think that‘s so, that when a villain has access to it, he doesn‘t draw anything dangerous to hurt somebody I would say“
„Well that‘s good“
„I don‘t know if people would actually be able to use my tab“
„If they were as good as you at drawing, it would be possible“
„It still has some complicated things, but if they‘re smart enough they manage to find out how to use it…..or to find the manual, which it actually has“
„Well that‘s useful“
„You know, what would be cool Super Nathan?“ Kevin asked the purple-skinned boy, that looked up at the boy, who had given Miss Vixen his homework to check it.
„No“ Responded Super Nathan. „What?“
„If you made bed slats look like cars“ Responded Kevin. „Well at least for the boys“
„I can ask each of them, what they want and then I‘ll do it“ Offered Super Nathan sitting down on the bed next to Kevin. „What do you think?“
„I think they would like it“
„Then if you want, we can start with yours,“ Super Nathan suggested and Kevin went down from his bed along with Miss Vixen.
„Hey I‘m going to ask the others, how they want their bed to look like, I‘ll be right back“
„Sure“ Super Nathan answered his girlfriend, then sat down with Kevin on the second bed and Super Nathan started to picture something on his tablet. Lady Red followed Miss Vixen to the other room, then watched Miss Vixen pick up the little girl Erin to spin her around, making the ladybug-themed heroine smile at the sight of it.
„Meow, “ A voice said and Lady Red looked back to see Cat Noir stand in the middle of the corridor smiling at her.
„You‘re here," Lady Red said turning around to him, then he approached her and looked together with her into the room, seeing Miss Vixen tickle the little girl as she sat on the floor laughing at the tall fox-themed tingle her on the sides of her belly.„You haven‘t had my sister in your arms yet, right?“ Questioned the blonde superhero making the blue-haired girl shake her head.
„No"
„This evening you really need to hold her. I promise you, that the feeling of holding a newborn in your arms is the most wonderful thing in the world“
„I believe you“ Lady Red answered making the cat hero smile gently at her. „Could you rest a little better, after I called you“
„A little bit“ Responded Cat Noir. „But I didn‘t want to miss this opportunity“
„Cat Noir‘s here!“ Shouted a short raven-haired boy grabbing himself on the legs of the superhero.
„Whoa little man, be careful, that‘s real leather, Cat Noir said jokingly making Lady Red hold her mouth to cover her laugh.
„That‘s not real leather Cat Noir, I know this from Zackary Jeremias‘ biography about you and the other heroes“
„There you right boy, it‘s artificial leather or maybe Alcantara“ Explained the blonde superhero.
„Can you sign my Cat Noir poster I have over my bed?“ Asked the boy earning a nod from the blonde.
„Of course, what‘s your name, if I may ask?“
„Christian“
„Nice, now show me, where your bed is, boy“ Cat ordered the boy, who entered the room, where Miss Vixen was to show it to Cat Noir.
An hour later, after Super Nathan had managed to draw everyone a new bed slat the kids were helping each other in pairs to cover their bed with clean bed sheets and the last two beds Cat Noir assisted Super Nathan placing the mattress back on the new slat, while Miss Vixen and Lady Red helped each other doing it on the second bed.
„Jason‘s fox-inspired bed is the best one, Lisa said looking at the bed, where a tan-skinned South Asian boy sat.
„I‘m glad you all liked it, Super Nathan said a little abashed. „I really gave my best to give you all something, that would not let you all forget this day“
„We can make it last longer if we all sign our names somewhere on the bed if they want“ Suggested the vixen heroine. „What do you all think?“
„Oh, oh, sign mines first!“ Jason announced jumping on his bed, making the others giggle.
„Alright, “ Miss Vixen said walking up to the fox-themed bed with a black marker, then signed her name on the wooden board on the end of his bed.
„Where‘s Damon?“ Questioned Lisa looking around the room to see, that almost everyone from the orphanage was there, beside him.
„Which one is Damon again?“ Questioned Cat Noir the blonde girl.
„He‘s around Erin‘s age“ Explained Rita. „He‘s only here for a month, he lost his parents in an accident“
„Oh that‘s sad, “ Super Nathan said sadly. „Is there a way we could help him?“ Super Nathan asked looking up at Cat Noir and Lady Red.
„You have tried everything Super Nathan. You and your team“ Madame Livre said as she stood by the entrance of the room watching the heroes around the bed of the Korean descendant boy.
„In which accident did the parents die?“ Questioned Cat Noir looking at the woman, then Super Nathan got up from the bed with a shocked face as he realized, what accident she could have mean.
„I‘m so sorry, “ The redhead said sinking his head down at thinking about the night of the airplane crash.
„Hey, hey, come on, I know this was bad, but try to forget this and focus on the future. Focus on the future missions we‘re going to face“ Cat Noir comforted his superhero friend.
„Since Le Paon had been defeated we haven‘t really fought someone really, really bad, “ Told Lady Red handing Cat Noir the black marker for him to sign Jason‘s fox-themed bed slat. „I feel we‘re like patrol officers, most of the times“
„We‘re still doing good things like protecting the citizens, stopping a robbery, grand theft auto, we even help the poor quarter from Paris. At least the real police force can focus on other important cases“ Cat Noir explained his girlfriend.
„And Paris is thankful for you all“ Madame Livre said, then one of the girls, that was inside the room ran at the woman to grab her on the hand.
„You have to see the beds Super Nathan made for us. All the heroes even signed it“
„That sounds amazing, Ruby“
„It was our pleasure“ Super Nathan said changing looks with the other superheroes.
„Thank you for welcoming us, “ Miss Vixen said to the orphanage owner giving her a handshake.
„Are you leaving?“ The adult asked. „Please be our guests for lunch.“
„What‘s for dinner?“ Asked Cat Noir and Super Nathan at the same time making the superheroines laugh.
„Chicken breast with mashed potatoes and peas“ Responded Madame Livre.
„You can count on me, “ Cat Noir said while licking his lips, then he watched his teammates nodding at the woman, which felt pleased about the heroes having accepted her invite.
„That‘s fantastic if you want you can all come down and take a chair. In 5 minutes it will be ready“ Madame Livre mentioned. „And Jason can you do me a favor and call the others for lunch?“
„Yes Madame Livre, “ The Asian descendant boy said getting down from his new bed making his way into the corridor to the other bedroom.
All followed Madame Livre out of the room, besides Super Nathan who stood back distracted, then Miss Vixen who was the last leaving the room noted, that Super Nathan stood back and she walked back to him.
„You‘re alright?“ Asked the vixen-heroine the boy, who shook his head and looked at Miss Vixen standing in front of him.
„Sorry, I was thinking about Damon, that…..just because of our failure he lost his parents“
„It‘s not your fault, it was just bad luck“ Miss Vixen comforted her boyfriend, who couldn‘t get that out of his mind. „You were all doing it right, the plane just had the pitch to get caught on the electric cable“
„Yes….“
„Let‘s go down and eat with the others, I promise you will feel better after that“ The fox miraculous holder promised giving Super Nathan her hand to accompany him out of the room to join the others for lunch.
Shadow-Blessed Ep. 9
Tumblr media
I took over driving after we crossed the state line between Florida and Georgia. Ruby made arrangements for where we would stop at that time. She never told me where we were heading. I probably should have asked, but I didn’t. As long as it was away from Florida, that was fine with me. We’d had too many close calls in too short a time. Once we’d put a bit more distance between ourselves and our pursuers, I’d worry about a specific destination. I imagined us stopping at some hole in the wall long enough to sleep and then getting back on the road. The GPS shattered those imaginings as it led us to the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Before I could get out an argument against staying in such a busy hotel, I noticed something odd. A group of people dressed like superheroes walked out of the hotel and got into a waiting minivan.
“It’s Dragon Con weekend!” Ruby said before I could form a question.
“What?” I asked.
“It’s kinda like Comic-Con. You know a bunch of hardcore sci-fi and fantasy fans get together and geek out over all their favorite shows, movies, and books,” she said.
“And what are we doing here?” I asked, already considering the possibility of leaving.
“Who is going to look for a couple of real witches here?” she asked. It was a fair question. Anyone trying to find me would try to find the real magical scene in Atlanta. I’d been a ward of the Coven for most of my life, and that meant a near-constant training schedule. The closest I got to recreational reading was picking up unassigned spell books and reading through them in my spare time.
“Fine, but if you’re wrong, I’m picking the next stop,” I said. When I considered it, I was curious about how the news of magic being real would affect people who’d been wishing for exactly that all their lives. I wouldn’t admit that to Ruby, though. We got out of the car, and she told the valet driver a room number.
My fight or flight response jumped into overdrive when we walked into the hotel’s lobby. It was packed. That many people alone stressed me out but adding the fact that I couldn’t see so many of their faces behind their masks and I was ready to run. The urge passed when I felt Umbra pulling my attention inward. I calmed down enough not to make any drastic moves. As my mind cleared, I felt that there were some witches in the room with us. It would normally take a lot more time and focus for me to sense them. To get this level of precision before, I’d have needed silence and a lot more darkness. With Umbra’s help, it was a matter of wanting to know. There were five witches in the lobby, including Ruby and me. One of them had a minor talent that they might never discover their power without the right push. The other two were stronger, definitely aware of their gifts. I sneaked a look at the one nearest to us—a tall man with close-cropped salt and pepper hair.
I looked away, not wanting to draw his attention. Witches can often pick up on when people are staring at us. If I gave him any more attention, he would notice me. I turned my attention to the last witch. She was a petite black woman with oversized snowflakes in her hair. Her outfit was a floor-length white gown that continued the snowflake theme. It wasn’t cold enough in the lobby to keep the snow from melting, but it held its shape. Other people likely assumed that the snow was fake. Natural snow wasn’t big enough for the naked eye to pick up that much detail. She had to have a strong talent for aquamancy to pull off the costume she was wearing. I didn’t recognize either of the stronger witches as the Coven agents, but that didn’t clear them completely. It was a large organization. It had to be to keep real witchcraft a secret for as long as they did. I didn’t know the face of every witch involved with them.
Ruby didn’t seem to notice my preoccupation as we walked through the lobby. I’d been so distracted with scoping out the other witches that I didn’t realize we’d skipped the front desk until we stopped in front of the elevator. There were too many people waiting for the elevators with us for me to ask any of the questions that were piling up in my head. So I waited, tracking the other witches' movements to make sure none of them were paying attention to us. The group waiting for the elevator grew so much that there was at least one full load of people left waiting when the first car reached capacity. I was glad that we weren’t stuck waiting. More people were constantly arriving, it seemed, and I didn’t like feeling so crowded. Most of our fellow passengers emptied out before us. And I was grateful that no one followed us off on our floor.
“Won’t we need keys?” I asked.
“I am the key. That’s the nice part about hotels going in for the whole magnetic strip key card deal. There isn’t a technomancer worth their salt who can’t get past one of those,” she said.
“So are we gonna squat in someone’s room while they’re out enjoying the convention?”
“That’s not what I had in mind. I thought we might enjoy the con a little ourselves. Being on the run doesn’t have to mean that we can’t enjoy life anymore. This is one of the first fantasy conventions held in a world where magic is public knowledge. I’m not saying that it’s going to make history or anything, but we can learn a lot about how the world is going to react right here.”
Ruby stopped in front of a door and waved her hand over the key card reader. The light flashed green, and she opened the door. The room was enormous, and I was only looking at the living room. The bedroom was just as grand. There was only one bed, but it was large enough to both sleep in it without disturbing each other if we wanted. I went back to the living room and tested the couch. It was comfortable. If Ruby didn’t want to share a bed, I could get a good night's sleep there too. Umbra stepped out of my shadow and moved about the room. They looked like the shadow of a large dog passing over the floor and walls. After they completed a circle around the room, they slid under the door out into the hall. Between Ruby’s access to luxury and Umbra’s security, it should have been easy to relax. But I couldn’t help remembering the last time I’d let my guard down. I was still wearing the only outfit I owned because of a careless mistake. I didn’t have much left to lose if something like that happened again.
“I’m going to shower, and then we should grab some food. You want to look up what stores are around so that we can get you something new to wear?” Ruby suggested.
“Yeah sounds like a good plan,” I said.
I pulled out my tablet and started searching for nearby stores. There were plenty of choices. The sudden financial windfall that came with being Ruby’s traveling companion meant that I didn’t have to look for bargains. Umbra came back while I was narrowing down my options. They’d shifted to look like the shadow of a mouse while they were away. They reassured me, settling into my shadow again and sharing their exploration. Nothing in the surrounding rooms was going to threaten us. Their occupants were excitedly preparing for the convention. How much more excited would they be to know that a living shadow had just spied on them for a couple of witches.
Our Room For Real Simple’s Idea House
Earlier this month we took the whole family (dog included!) up to Brooklyn for a few days to put together the space we’ve be designing for this year’s Real Simple Idea House over the past five or so months.
I realize there’s a lot to unpack in that sentence (especially if you missed our podcast episode or Instagram stories about it) so we’ll catch you up right here and show you the *almost* finished space. And explain what’s still left to be done before their big photoshoot for the magazine and tell you about how some last-minute curveballs actually made the room better. And tell you what they do with everything in the house once the idea home is all said & done. That’s a lot of ands, so buckle up because we have a lot to tell ya.
Tumblr media
This is the second year that Real Simple magazine has taken over a home in Brooklyn, assigned each room to a different “designer” (there’s typically a mix of certified interior designers & bloggers & design TV personalities, etc) and then they photograph the finished spaces for their magazine (this one will featured be in their October issue). Here’s last year’s house which we loved following along (especially since our friends Jenny Komenda & Sabrina Soto each got a room in that house.
We were completely surprised & extremely thrilled when they asked us if we wanted to do a room this year – and they assigned us the “guest room/playroom” – which felt just perfect for us (we love multi-function rooms, especially when it involves balancing the needs of both grown-ups and kids… even if the family is imaginary in this case).
Tumblr media
light | chairs | table | beanbag | pouf | dresser | shelves | rug | wallpaper
So since March we’ve worked remotely with the Real Simple team to make this room happen. They sent us pictures (like the one below) and measurements and floor plans, we sent back design plans and a mood board and a floor plan and links to each product selection. Everything had to be approved by their editors (they didn’t want a certain space to feel wildly incongruous with any of the other rooms and they also didn’t want duplicate or too-similar items or ideas from space to space) so it was a fascinating puzzle to put together from afar.
Tumblr media
Once everything that we ordered had arrived in the room, we spent one marathon day putting things in place and navigating some 11th hour challenges that are inevitable in these types of projects. We didn’t get EVERYTHING completed (most notably our long white curtains were back-ordered so they’ll go up later – which will completely soften that industrial back wall so it looks a lot more like the rest of the room) but it’s around 95% done in these pictures, and the Real Simple crew will get it to full 100% before their photographer comes in.
Tumblr media
And yes, those are our son’s feet poking out in the picture above and our daughter is laying on the bed under a blanket. We decided to make this a big family trip – mostly because we wanted to see relatives and friends in the NYC/NJ area while we were up there, but also because we thought it’d be fun for our kids to see us tackle this firsthand. It was basically one big “take your kids to work” adventure, and they both got into it and started suggesting what they’d like (our daughter even sketched out some ideas on her little magnetic drawing tablet), and they both served as “quality control” to make sure the beanbag was comfy and the rug was soft enough to roll on. In short: it was a ton of fun to have them there.
In any of these combo rooms, there can definitely be a range of percentages when it comes to the balance. For example, sometimes people have a playroom with a futon in it and it’s 95% playroom, and 5% guest room (that futon is literally the only guest room-ish thing about it, and it’s used very rarely).
Tumblr media
mirror | side table | daybed | wallpaper | art | lamp | poufs | quilt | rug | octopus
In this case, the brief from Real Simple was to make it look mostly like a guest room, so any grown up would walk in and love it and want to sleep there, but to also work in some kids stuff – both hidden (in storage bins, baskets, behind closed drawers, etc) and on display (on open shelves, in lidless baskets, etc). So I’d call this room’s particular percentage 75% guest room & 25% playroom. When you’re tackling a multi-use space like this, do whatever percentage actually works functionally and feels right for your home (remember, this is an imaginary family).
As for pulling this room’s design together, I’ve been obsessed with this daybed for years, so it was the launch point for the whole room as soon as Real Simple said that a single bed was their preference for the space. Picture me punching the air and screaming “I GET TO USE MY DREAM DAYBED!!!!”
Tumblr media
light | baskets | daybed | wallpaper | art | poufs | pillows | quilt | rug | chair | table
Daybeds are also great because they can function as both a bed (when it’s in guest room mode) and a couch (when it’s in playroom mode). We also balanced some other needs for both functions with some other furniture choices. A nice big side table with books & mags for a guest along with a reading lamp checks the guest room box, while some large lidded storage baskets on the other side of the bed checked the playroom box (see photo above).
The wallpaper was also sort of a happy accident too. The original wallpaper we had suggested was also very tone-on-tone and I had picked it because I LOVED how playful the pattern was (look how cute!). Since it was still an extremely neutral color palette, but the pattern was fun for kids, I thought it would be perfect for this dual space, but the editors worried it might skew too playroom so we selected this more affordable palm one instead. We love how the room turned out, but I still love the original wallpaper pick too – so if you’re creating a playroom or a kids room, I think it would be so much fun (heck, as a grown woman I’d like it in my space too).
Tumblr media
mirror | daybed | wallpaper | art | lamp | pillows | quilt | octopus
I am just in love with that octopus, as were the kids. What is it about a big stuffed animal with a slightly dopey expression that steals your heart? Also, some of our pillow fills hadn’t arrived yet so that droopy bolster pillow below is stuffed with spare bath towels. THE MAGIC OF PHOTO STYLING, EVERYBODY! Also this large print from Juniper Print Shop was such a perfect solution (all the right colors, looked great with the wallpaper, and feels like a kid would love staring at it just as much as a grown up – in fact our kids asked us whose house it was – ha!).
Tumblr media
daybed | wallpaper | art | pillows | quilt
Another playroom “must” for us is a table or desk that can serve as a craft/art/game space. This room had very little wall space (aside from the bed wall, it was pretty much all windows, closets, and doors) so we knew a floating desk or table was our best bet. A round table is always great in these scenarios and we knew our drop-leaf table would earn bonus points because the leaves can be folded down to make it more compact if needed. Plus there’s room for two blue-gray chairs that can be moved to any of the four sides of the table. Flexible furniture is always a win.
So we just hoped when we showed up that we could make it work, and we love how it looks by the windows. Imagine coloring or doing a puzzle there while looking outside on a gorgeous sunny day. Please also imagine my double wide white flowy curtains because all of that industrial black frame that you see below will be muuuuuch softer once they’re hung. I can’t wait to see the photos from the magazine because it’s going to be yet another demonstration about how curtains completely change a room. Stay tuned…
Tumblr media
wallpaper | rug | chairs | table | beanbag
This room is also great because it had two matching closets along the wall to the right of the window above. Why is that great? Well, it was a no-brainer to make one useful for guests (their clothes, a suitcase, etc) and use the other one for kids storage (games, books, art supplies, etc). The guest closet is being outfitted by professional organizers (they’re doing pretty much every other closet in the house too, as well as the pantry) so our task was to tackle the kids closet, which we wanted to make open and accessible – and cute enough to be in plain view 24/7… so our first step was to remove the sliding doors.
I realize that “doors off” approach could sound counterintuitive since the fastest way to clean up for guests is to just throw stuff behind closed doors, but we’ve found that can also breed Monica closets (especially when toys are involved). Plus this is an idea house… how fun would this room be if we just had kids stuff hiding behind a closed door? So instead, we got to create this little nook full of functional storage that looks good too (the stenciled dresser is such a great piece that’s easy on the eyes yet super smart for storing things out of sight).
Tumblr media
chairs | table | beanbag | dresser | shelves | wallpaper
So at least consider creating some storage like this in your home, which can fend off the urge to shove everything into a closet, and instead create a manageable and simple system for things (both concealed and out in the open) so that you love looking at it. When everything has a legit spot to go back to after it’s done being played with, it really isn’t very hard to maintain (and even kids can clean up on autopilot).
Another example of this concept is the back wall of our bonus room in our house, where we have concealed cabinets for storing games and art supplies and puzzles and even bonus guest blankets and pillows for when people sleep in there, but also has fun open shelving so you walk in and see some playful and very functional items right out in the open.
Tumblr media
But back to the idea room. These shelves were actually our biggest hiccup in the plan, and they’re what ended up taking up the biggest chunk of time during our install day. Our original shelves were backordered, but we didn’t find that out with enough time to order new ones.
Tumblr media
Originally we were going to do colorful shelves full of books & toys, but physically being in the room that day made it clear that this wall needed some wood tones to balance out the daybed and the other lovely wood tones on the other side of the space.
HOORAY FOR THE COLORFUL SHELF DELAY! It truly was the best hiccup we could have asked for, because these wood shelves made the room turn out so much better than it would have if those hadn’t been backordered. After we arrived, we immediately began hunting for options that were in stock and available that day, and landed on these LISABO shelves from Ikea. And there was an Ikea like 15 minutes from the house in Brooklyn so we were able to have them in hand by lunchtime!
Tumblr media
We filmed a whole segment with Real Simple about hanging the shelves (who knows if we were coherent enough for them to use it but we’ll share it if/when it comes out), and you can see that the more neutral shelves still ended up looking colorful and fun, thanks to the addition of some toys and books and blocks.
And I know the idea of color-coding your shelves can be eye-roll inducing, but it ended up being great for this tiny space. I wasn’t super Type-A about it. I just quickly tossed things together mostly by color… but there’s yellow & pink in that top right corner and orange & hot pink in the top left, so it’s not anything that took too long or was overwrought.
Tumblr media
In fact it took us about 1.5 hours to hang these shelves (two words: cinderblock walls) but it took me like 9 minutes to style them. Not kidding. And the cool thing is that as people use items and kids grow and change, shelves evolve too. Open shelves aren’t a museum. Nobody has to painstakingly put things back the same way each time. It’s actually fun to try different groupings, and this rainbow-ish approach made our eyes happy, but the shelves in our bonus room have changed so much over the years. It’s all gonna be ok. Don’t stress. Just put things you like to look at on open shelves and hide stuff you don’t wanna see in concealed cabinets or drawers or baskets or bins. Truly, it’s a simple system that you can actually can keep up with.
A note on the shelves themselves, because they exceeded our expectations by like a million. I had never personally heard of or seen these shelves before (they said “new” on the Ikea site when John dug them up on his phone in that panicked we-have-to-find-something-today search) but I’m SUPER impressed by them. They’re very solid, relatively easy to hang (would’ve taken about 10 mins per shelf if we didn’t have cinderblock walls which required a masonry bit), and the wood tone is perfect. Blonde and casual. Smooth & expensive looking. But not.
Tumblr media
And since we know keeping picture-perfect shelves isn’t realistic for all of your toys, we always like to incorporate some closed toy storage too – like the chest of drawers underneath the shelves and those large floor baskets across the room that we mentioned earlier.
Oh, I also think we need to buy a beanbag now. Our kids were obsessed with this one. Like the chairs were chumps. They both wanted to be ON THE BEANBAG AT ALL TIMES.
Tumblr media
light | chairs | table | beanbag | pouf | dresser | shelves | rug | wallpaper
I’m so excited to see the finished pictures of this space in Real Simple’s October issue. Plus there are so many other amazing spaces that we already got to see in various states of near-completion, like Mandi’s master bedroom and Shavonda & Carmeon’s office. Speaking of which, we overlapped Shavonda and Carmeon‘s visit and it was SO. MUCH. FUN. to finally meet them both in person. We’ve been IG buddies for ages (you might remember that Shavonda talked to us about downsizing on our podcast last year) so hanging with them was the perfect end to an extremely fun day.
Tumblr media
Plus Shavonda got this sweet picture of me and John where we look like we’re wearing one large black t-shirt with three arm-holes. If that ain’t marriage, I don’t know what is.
Tumblr media
Oh, and as for what happens to all of this stuff and this house when the photos are taken for Real Simple’s October issue… well, the house gets sold and the furniture gets auctioned off for a good cause! I love that nothing goes to waste, and in creating such a fun space, everything ends up benefiting people who need a helping hand. They haven’t picked this year’s charity yet, but when they do I’ll let you know.
So thanks, Real Simple! It was Real Fun ;) #MomJokes4Days
P.S. If you’d like to see other rooms we’ve designed for a good cause, we loved doing this very special room makeover for a local family, this teacher’s lounge for a local school, and these three bedroom makeovers for three amazing kids.
Earlier this month we took the whole family (dog included!) up to Brooklyn for a few days to put together the space we’ve be designing for this year’s Real Simple Idea House over the past five or so months.
This is the second year that Real Simple magazine has taken over a home in Brooklyn, assigned each room to a different “designer” (there’s typically a mix of certified interior designers & bloggers & design TV personalities, etc) and then they photograph the finished spaces for their magazine (this one will featured be in their October issue). In this case, the brief from Real Simple was to make it look mostly like a guest room, so any grown up would walk in and love it and want to sleep there, but to also work in some kids stuff – both hidden (in storage bins, baskets, behind closed drawers, etc) and on display (on open shelves, in lidless baskets, etc). So I’d call this room’s particular percentage 75% guest room & 25% playroom. When you’re tackling a multi-use space like this, do whatever percentage actually works functionally and feels right for your home (remember, this is an imaginary family).
As for pulling this room’s design together, I’ve been obsessed with this daybed for years, so it was the launch point for the whole room as soon as Real Simple said that a single bed was their preference for the space. Picture me punching the air and screaming “I GET TO USE MY DREAM DAYBED!!!!”
Tumblr media
light | baskets | daybed | wallpaper | art | poufs | pillows | quilt | rug | chair | table
Daybeds are also great because they can function as both a bed (when it’s in guest room mode) and a couch (when it’s in playroom mode). We also balanced some other needs for both functions with some other furniture choices. A nice big side table with books & mags for a guest along with a reading lamp checks the guest room box, while some large lidded storage baskets on the other side of the bed checked the playroom box (see photo above).
The wallpaper was also sort of a happy accident too. The original wallpaper we had suggested was also very tone-on-tone and I had picked it because I LOVED how playful the pattern was (look how cute!). Since it was still an extremely neutral color palette, but the pattern was fun for kids, I thought it would be perfect for this dual space, but the editors worried it might skew too playroom so we selected this more affordable palm one instead. We love how the room turned out, but I still love the original wallpaper pick too – so if you’re creating a playroom or a kids room, I think it would be so much fun (heck, as a grown woman I’d like it in my space too).
Tumblr media
mirror | daybed | wallpaper | art | lamp | pillows | quilt | octopus
I am just in love with that octopus, as were the kids. What is it about a big stuffed animal with a slightly dopey expression that steals your heart? Also, some of our pillow fills hadn’t arrived yet so that droopy bolster pillow below is stuffed with spare bath towels. THE MAGIC OF PHOTO STYLING, EVERYBODY! Also this large print from Juniper Print Shop was such a perfect solution (all the right colors, looked great with the wallpaper, and feels like a kid would love staring at it just as much as a grown up – in fact our kids asked us whose house it was – ha!).
Tumblr media
daybed | wallpaper | art | pillows | quilt
Another playroom “must” for us is a table or desk that can serve as a craft/art/game space. This room had very little wall space (aside from the bed wall, it was pretty much all windows, closets, and doors) so we knew a floating desk or table was our best bet. A round table is always great in these scenarios and we knew our drop-leaf table would earn bonus points because the leaves can be folded down to make it more compact if needed. Plus there’s room for two blue-gray chairs that can be moved to any of the four sides of the table. Flexible furniture is always a win.
So we just hoped when we showed up that we could make it work, and we love how it looks by the windows. Imagine coloring or doing a puzzle there while looking outside on a gorgeous sunny day. Please also imagine my double wide white flowy curtains because all of that industrial black frame that you see below will be muuuuuch softer once they’re hung. I can’t wait to see the photos from the magazine because it’s going to be yet another demonstration about how curtains completely change a room. Stay tuned…
Tumblr media
wallpaper | rug | chairs | table | beanbag
This room is also great because it had two matching closets along the wall to the right of the window above. Why is that great? Well, it was a no-brainer to make one useful for guests (their clothes, a suitcase, etc) and use the other one for kids storage (games, books, art supplies, etc). The guest closet is being outfitted by professional organizers (they’re doing pretty much every other closet in the house too, as well as the pantry) so our task was to tackle the kids closet, which we wanted to make open and accessible – and cute enough to be in plain view 24/7… so our first step was to remove the sliding doors.
I realize that “doors off” approach could sound counterintuitive since the fastest way to clean up for guests is to just throw stuff behind closed doors, but we’ve found that can also breed Monica closets (especially when toys are involved). Plus this is an idea house… how fun would this room be if we just had kids stuff hiding behind a closed door? So instead, we got to create this little nook full of functional storage that looks good too (the stenciled dresser is such a great piece that’s easy on the eyes yet super smart for storing things out of sight).
Tumblr media
chairs | table | beanbag | dresser | shelves | wallpaper
So at least consider creating some storage like this in your home, which can fend off the urge to shove everything into a closet, and instead create a manageable and simple system for things (both concealed and out in the open) so that you love looking at it. When everything has a legit spot to go back to after it’s done being played with, it really isn’t very hard to maintain (and even kids can clean up on autopilot).
Another example of this concept is the back wall of our bonus room in our house, where we have concealed cabinets for storing games and art supplies and puzzles and even bonus guest blankets and pillows for when people sleep in there, but also has fun open shelving so you walk in and see some playful and very functional items right out in the open.
Tumblr media
But back to the idea room. These shelves were actually our biggest hiccup in the plan, and they’re what ended up taking up the biggest chunk of time during our install day. Our original shelves were backordered, but we didn’t find that out with enough time to order new ones.
Tumblr media
Originally we were going to do colorful shelves full of books & toys, but physically being in the room that day made it clear that this wall needed some wood tones to balance out the daybed and the other lovely wood tones on the other side of the space.
HOORAY FOR THE COLORFUL SHELF DELAY! It truly was the best hiccup we could have asked for, because these wood shelves made the room turn out so much better than it would have if those hadn’t been backordered. After we arrived, we immediately began hunting for options that were in stock and available that day, and landed on these LISABO shelves from Ikea. And there was an Ikea like 15 minutes from the house in Brooklyn so we were able to have them in hand by lunchtime!
Tumblr media
We filmed a whole segment with Real Simple about hanging the shelves (who knows if we were coherent enough for them to use it but we’ll share it if/when it comes out), and you can see that the more neutral shelves still ended up looking colorful and fun, thanks to the addition of some toys and books and blocks.
And I know the idea of color-coding your shelves can be eye-roll inducing, but it ended up being great for this tiny space. I wasn’t super Type-A about it. I just quickly tossed things together mostly by color… but there’s yellow & pink in that top right corner and orange & hot pink in the top left, so it’s not anything that took too long or was overwrought.
Tumblr media
In fact it took us about 1.5 hours to hang these shelves (two words: cinderblock walls) but it took me like 9 minutes to style them. Not kidding. And the cool thing is that as people use items and kids grow and change, shelves evolve too. Open shelves aren’t a museum. Nobody has to painstakingly put things back the same way each time. It’s actually fun to try different groupings, and this rainbow-ish approach made our eyes happy, but the shelves in our bonus room have changed so much over the years. It’s all gonna be ok. Don’t stress. Just put things you like to look at on open shelves and hide stuff you don’t wanna see in concealed cabinets or drawers or baskets or bins. Truly, it’s a simple system that you can actually can keep up with.
A note on the shelves themselves, because they exceeded our expectations by like a million. I had never personally heard of or seen these shelves before (they said “new” on the Ikea site when John dug them up on his phone in that panicked we-have-to-find-something-today search) but I’m SUPER impressed by them. They’re very solid, relatively easy to hang (would’ve taken about 10 mins per shelf if we didn’t have cinderblock walls which required a masonry bit), and the wood tone is perfect. Blonde and casual. Smooth & expensive looking. But not.
Tumblr media
And since we know keeping picture-perfect shelves isn’t realistic for all of your toys, we always like to incorporate some closed toy storage too – like the chest of drawers underneath the shelves and those large floor baskets across the room that we mentioned earlier.
Oh, I also think we need to buy a beanbag now. Our kids were obsessed with this one. Like the chairs were chumps. They both wanted to be ON THE BEANBAG AT ALL TIMES.
Tumblr media
I’m so excited to see the finished pictures of this space in Real Simple’s October issue. Plus there are so many other amazing spaces that we already got to see in various states of near-completion, like Mandi’s master bedroom and Shavonda & Carmeon’s office. Speaking of which, we overlapped Shavonda and Carmeon‘s visit and it was SO. MUCH. FUN. to finally meet them both in person. We’ve been IG buddies for ages (you might remember that Shavonda talked to us about downsizing on our podcast last year) so hanging with them was the perfect end to an extremely fun day.
Tumblr media
Plus Shavonda got this sweet picture of me and John where we look like we’re wearing one large black t-shirt with three arm-holes. If that ain’t marriage, I don’t know what is.
Tumblr media
Oh, and as for what happens to all of this stuff and this house when the photos are taken for Real Simple’s October issue… well, the house gets sold and the furniture gets auctioned off for a good cause! I love that nothing goes to waste, and in creating such a fun space, everything ends up benefiting people who need a helping hand. They haven’t picked this year’s charity yet, but when they do I’ll let you know.
So thanks, Real Simple! It was Real Fun ;) #MomJokes4Days
P.S. If you’d like to see other rooms we’ve designed for a good cause, we loved doing this very special room makeover for a local family, this teacher’s lounge for a local school, and these three bedroom makeovers for three amazing kids.
PASS THE HAPPY ALONG! :) When you get this, answer with five things that make you happy and pass the happy along to ten nice people!
Not sure if I should post this privately or publically, so here goes. I’m not ashamed of any of it, so hey! Scroll past if TL;DR.
1. The fact that I have a good relationship with my mom. Like she has her crazy moments and I certainly have mine, but I doubt I’d be who I am without her. My dad means well (I think), but I’d be so screwed if he were my only parent. I also wouldn’t work in the field that I do if it weren’t for my mom. She works in web design, I work as a social media manager. You can scream nepotism all you want, but like with all freelance work, it doesn’t matter so long as someone decides to take you seriously to get the ball rolling.
2. My bff/twisted sister reinetteslonelyangel. We live several states apart and have never been in the same room together, but whether we’re debating crack pairings, the best methods for moving furniture across an apartment complex, or fighting the good fight against bullshit in Overwatch, she is without a doubt my person. We just aren’t sure which one of us is Meredith and which one is Cristina.
3. My cat chortling. I know he pulls the adorable act to see what he can get out of the fridge, but since his brother cat passed, he’s grown way more talkative. Like his personality’s emerging more than ever and it’s great.
4. Streaming on Twitch. I’ve been doing it six nights out of seven and it’s just FUN, I guess. That might be the part of me that’s an attention whore (that’s always the accusation for people who like to stream/do YT gaming, isn’t it?), but I like sharing games with other people who may not have played them. Like…I love this thing, so maybe you will too? Try it so we can flail about it? Or meeting other people who love the same game, lol. I enjoy that too. As well as trying games I might not have played otherwise. I hated The Witcher 3 at first, but am glad I gave it a second chance. And I didn’t expect to like The Lost Legacy and sadly didn’t, but I’m glad I played it anyway if only for Chloe fucking Frazer.
5. Getting back into doing art. I haven’t drawn seriously for some time other than like...the sketchbook I keep by the bed or the one I keep on my desk for passive aggressive drawing during work hours. Like I’m getting a new tablet so I can finally start doing quality digital work again. I’m no pro and dropped out of art school after a year because I hated how they were so clinical and anti-creative - they drained the enthusiasm right out of me, but I really want to get back into doing fan art and pet portraits. You can certainly expect to see Grayson, Chloe, Ignis, and Sombra here, lol. Maybe together. And no, NOT in an orgy, although that’d be pretty hot
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Sky is currently with novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sky is very fearful at the care center, growling and snapping at intake and when attempts to leash her in the kennel are made. It is important to always go slow and give Sky the option to walk away from any social interaction. Sky should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Sky’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Sky would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die. today i got almost everything done!
my mother woke me up at about 5:45, and then again at 6:20. i was super angry. then my brother and sister were in both the upstairs bathrooms so i had to go all the way downstairs and across the house just to go to the bathroom before i went back to sleep.
i dreamed that i was getting annoyed with a conspiracy theorist. “video games are downloading scientific theories into your brain!!!” it was the science that scared them apparently. and the computers. the person wasn’t even present, i was just hearing their voice as i played dream mario, which is only slightly like nintendo mario. i told the voice that video games are just another way to tell a story. i pulled a children’s book out of somewhere, i think it was “goodnight moon” actually. except the cover was wrong. but i was telling the voice that there wasn’t nothin wrong with telling a cute or simple story.
sometimes the story is “i got really good at jumping over hills and across floating spinners and on turtles.”
i only put on the snooze for five minutes because i really, REALLY didn’t want to get up with less than like seven and a half hours of sleep. i got up anyway and showered. i didn’t get to spend long in the shower though... i really need to shave but i haven’t had much time at all the last five, seven days. i shower every other day since it’s a little better for your hair and skin...
anyway as i was heading out to go to therapy dad decided to start asking me to do some chores. i sort of started one, i let eve outside, but i seriously didn’t have time to wait for her to take a sunbath and let her back in. then someone (not naming names, because i’m not 100% sure) decided to park their car in a way that made it impossible for me to pull out of the garage. so i had to go back inside, get that car’s key, move it to the other side of the driveway, go back inside to drop off that key, and then i could get in “my” car and get going. then people on the freeway kept cutting me off without using their turn signals and also were generally going below the speed limit so i would have to stand on the brakes. this happened more than once. then i almost hit someone trying to get over to the exit because as i passed them apparently they sped up while passing through my blind spot so they were farther up than i thought they would be when i started changing lanes. cool!!!!!!!!
in individual therapy i brought up a bunch of emotional problems i had started to explore a little bit in group therapy. i ended up talking for the whole 45 minutes straight basically. like, my therapist asked a few questions, and reassured me a few times, but it was like a huge information dump so hopefully in the coming weeks i can start addressing each problem individually. i also got my semester refund paperwork sorted out with her. i’ll be able to pick it up next week. i mostly focused on how none of my problems feel “big enough” unless they are unsolvable since i really didn’t get to talk about it in group yesterday. i said one thing that i kind of liked though. i said “i feel like if i didn’t have so many problems, i wouldn’t have so many problems.”
what i meant to say was “if i didn’t have so many mental and personality problems, i wouldn’t have so many life problems,” but the vagueness was silly enough that my therapist made a face and laughed. i said i didn’t know what to focus on first and she said “you’re already working on everything.” i had listed the multiple projects i am trying to keep up with therapy wise... i dunno. i feel like if i can get over that big “problems have to be impossible” hurdle things will start feeling a little more manageable and i’ll be able to make progress more quickly.
guess i gotta spend more time thinking about that. i’ll keep you posted as things come up.
after that i picked up my paperwork from my physician’s office since i was on that side of town and got the number for the radiology lab that wants to do the last test. when i got home i shoved some leftovers in the microwave and called the lab and scheduled my “hida scan,” which is a gall bladder test i guess where they put a bunch of glowing stuff through your digestive system and see if it goes through normally. the scheduler said it normally takes two hours unless they find something, in which case it will take longer. luckily my next therapy appointment is 4 hours after my procedure... i hope that will give enough time. i will have to let her know. i definitely wouldn’t be able to do it on a group therapy day and the lady seemed pretty keen on doing it as soon as possible. and i can’t do it in the afternoon in case it goes long and dad isn’t able to get to work.
so 8 am next tuesday it is.
so i had my ravioli and went upstairs and then after a short break i watched the iron giant with oz. the movie is even better than i remembered. then we talked about physics stuff while i worked on gathering study materials with my classmates. i had a great time, and i hope oz did too. it felt nice to do an activity with someone that took up all our attention, so i didn’t have to, like, feel self conscious about not baring my soul or something.
i think when asher gets back i will talk to him about maybe spending an afternoon at the pottery lounge thing by the amc. it’s not cheap, but last time i checked i didn’t think it was too expensive at least. and i still have the ceramic dog i painted like 15 years ago so the stuff lasts. basically you pick out a little ceramic statue and you get to paint it using a selection from like 200 different shades. and i think you can stay as long as it takes to paint it. the smaller stuff wasn’t too bad cost-wise.
got sidetracked. after i hung up with oz and got all my emails and google docs in order i went and got groceries for mom. she was making quesadillas for dinner. i unfortunately had to pay for them with my own money, and it felt weird buying meat after all these years. but i guess i buy dog treats often enough that it’s not really, like, a compromise of my morals or something. i noticed that the dogs really went wild over the chicken strips i bought last time, so i tried to expand to “turducken.” (spoiler: they loved those too.)
so i dropped off the vegetables and stuff with mom, checked on the cactus mouse, and watched a couple of the videos i had loaded up while talking to oz. i try not to spend too much time reading or watching videos while talking to people because i get super focused on what i’m looking at and don’t hear what they say any more haha.
then i went downstairs and had my veggie quesadilla. it was... ok. i was still a little hungry afterward, but i also felt kind of ill so i didn’t want to eat any more. eating with mom was the WORST. she breathes loud and chews with her mouth open so it’s just a constant avalanche of awful squishy mouth noises. it made me so angry and annoyed that i think that’s what made me sick more than the food. i kind of abruptly stood up and put my plate away and took the dogs outside after trying out the new treats. i tried to play fetch with wiley but he was having none of it today. which is very odd... maybe it was just too hot for him to want to run around.
i have been experiencing kind of horrible pain between my shoulder blades. i’m pretty sure it’s not my bra pinching anything because it’s way above the strap... probably a pinched nerve. i tried stretching my arms and shoulders and that seemed to help a lot, so i’m thinking i slept in a bad position.
then i went back upstairs and whined to myself about my therapy homework. i did more “self care” research and added a few more posts to my queue. and i talked with some discord guys a little bit. then i caught up on my self esteem journal and picked out one of my “short term goals” from my hospital-issued treatment plan. i used that as a base to expand on for my goal worksheet. i finished all that around 11 so then i got started on the owl picture for 40 minutes or so. now i am 35 minutes into my journal entry, which puts me at a comfortable time to finish up and try to sleep. i got another 10 minutes before i hit my target “get ready for bed” time.
my group mates and therapist expressed interest when i let slip that i like to draw on monday. the therapist asked what i draw. i wasn’t sure how to answer... “furries” isn’t really something i wanted to get into. and i haven’t drawn my own characters except for a reference for one of the art trades in a long time. i suppose i should post the uncolored version of that since i scanned it in and haven’t worked on it with the tablet yet.
so i just said “characters and people.” i like landscapes, but i have trouble spending enough time on them to really get into the details. i’m hoping the coloring pages will help loosen up my patience so i might start feeling like spending a million hours on one picture again. it’s been a couple years since i did anything complicated.
i’m thinking about maybe taking my sketch book... but i don’t want to spend a lot of time on explaining what the picture is of when i have more urgent things to work on.
tomorrow i have more things to do! i NEED to work on the welcome packet for ufl. i need to scan in a bunch of stuff, like my immunization records and my doctors’ notes for my refund file. i need to send an email to the preliminary test coordinator to figure out how to proceed with my studying... i need to know how much to panic about this. then after group therapy i need to drop off my sister’s old prescriptions at the police station. that won’t take too long. if i got energy i’d like to organize my desk and maybe also tidy up my room a little bit. write some things down to put in the jar. then i will work on my self esteem journal, continue reading through the self care resources i’ve got open in a million tabs, and work on the coloring page a little bit. that sounds good. and at some point i need to write my 1- to 2-paragraph essay for the refund. and also i gotta email my apartment complex about stuff like the bed size and some cupboard dimensions and whether there’s a microwave and stuff like that. some of those things i’m pretty sure i can just look up somewhere.
i think i can manage those things. the student orientation videos might have to wait until thursday but i can compile the paperwork and read the faqs and stuff. none of these tasks take long by themselves. so as long as i remember to take little breaks and stay motivated i think i can get it done and not have to worry about it so much any more.
ok, it is 12:30, which is only 5 minutes after my target time! i’m gonna do the daily pokemon stuff for 2-3 minutes and then get ready for bed. gotta practice giving myself credit for reaching/working on goals and stuff, even when i don’t want to.
