Even after twenty years of dealing with full moons, they never got easier.

He knew how to hide it, and where to go around the week it was going to happen, but the pain never changed. He was still scratching his own skin—new scars were always appearing across his chest and arms, even his face on the worst nights—and having to hide his own body from the person he loved because he was embarrassed wasn't what Remus had in mind for their first year of dating.

Regulus knew. Regulus had always known what Remus was and where he went, but he had never been allowed to go with him. He would watch Remus pack his car up for the three night trip, kiss him softly in their driveway, then leave. He would get text updates the night before and night after, showing he was okay and alive, but Regulus could sense his exhaustion even though the phone.

All he wanted was to comfort him. This was the man he loved, this was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. And he still wouldn't let him in.

He asked Sirius about it towards their one year anniversary, because unfortunately that week happened to be full moon time and Remus had been devastated. Sirius, being his best friend, had helped Remus growing up so he was the first person Regulus could trust to talk to about this. And besides, Sirius always loved giving a second opinion.

"He's going to be upset you asked him," Sirius warned and Regulus put his head in his hands. "I'm glad you want to, though! You have to eventually, he can't hide away for the rest of his life."

"How long did it take him to let you see him change?"

"Few months, but we were kids. He couldn't run off in time. Plus, it's me. You really think I'd let him keep a secret from me?" Regulus shook his head. "Exactly. He should let you in, he adores you. And...I know you adore him." Sirius rubbed his brothers back. "Talk to him, Reg. He'll hear you out at the very least."

That night, when Regulus was sitting in Remus' lap and stroking his hair, he asked. He asked gently, quietly, so softly that it was barely a whisper in the dark. And Remus had gone rigid.

"You shouldn't see me like that." He mumbled and Regulus sighed.

"But what if I can help you?" He said. "I can clean you up properly, you never do it well on your own, you told me that. I want to make sure you don't get infected and that you're eating properly."

"Regulus—"

"Please." He cupped Remus' face and forced him to look at him. "Please just...I've never begged for anything in my life, but I'm begging you to just let me help. I know you're scared and you feel vulnerable, but look at me when we met. Still sheltered, no experience in anything besides being a stuck up rich kid...it's not the same, I know, but I let you in when no one else even offered. So please just let me do the same for you." Remus swallowed, looking at Regulus to find any ounce of dishonesty. To see if he could find fear.

There was none.

"Okay." He whispered, pressing their foreheads together. "Okay."
