so literally all of this is going to be disproven in like. 5 days but I can just move the timetable further back because like, what are they going to do? Detail Shadow Milk's entire pre-corruption life and leave no room for me to slide in my story?

but yeah basically, when the wizards originally made Moonlight, they didn't exactly realize that she wasn't going to come out fully formed as an adult and were incredibly unprepared to take care of a kid the size of their fingernails. Obviously rather than to admitting their misconception, they decreed that she should be raised among her own kind instead. So, they went to the witches, who offered one of their chosen as a parent.

^Basically just that paragraph but abridged.

Anyway, Blueberry Yogurt was told to teach Moonlight everything she needs to know, but under no circumstances is she allowed to learn Dark Moon Magic (Which wasn't forbidden at the time, and Blueberry Yogurt specifically was expected to research it at the behest of the witches). Moonlight was also given to him with the expectation that she'll be returned when she reaches maturity, but Blueberry Yogurt never intended to tell her that and never did.

Now, Moonlight is ~13 in human years, and is progressing well in her education and magical ability. Blueberry Yogurt is clearly deteriorating, to the point where even Moonlight even notices something's wrong. He's just stressed and the only good thing in his life right now is her. Then, obviously, he gets a letter that says they're taking Moonlight away in a week. Moonlight still has no clue this was a temporary arrangement, as far as she was aware, she was gonna stay with Blueberry Yogurt forever.

Blueberry Yogurt was a petty bitch long long before he ever turned into Shadow Milk and decides a week is long enough to teach a 13 y/o an entirely different form of magic that is objectively dangerous for cookies to perform. Moonlight, being a young teen, is excited about the prospect of doing something against the rules and doesn't know any better. Obviously, she gets really hurt doing this. Surprise, surprise. Anyway, Blueberry Yogurt freaks out, nothing he's doing is healing her, if anything, it's making her injury worse and he's quickly running out of options.

So, he does the only thing he can think of, and tells the witches. Now, that week-long "packing up" period has turned into 3 days and no proper goodbye. Moonlight immediately faults herself for her injury, thinking she should've been more careful. Then, when she's whisked off to the city of wizards and assumed to be a fully functioning adult, they also blame her for trying to learn Dark Moon Magic. leading to the construction of the canonical clocktower, which is actually really horrible if you think about it.

The wizards see her as the success she is, and start properly training her to be the moon goddess. Moonlight asks when she can go back home, and then is told that this is her home now, that Blueberry Yogurt lied to her and he knew she was never his to keep. Moonlight grows kind of resentful and accepts her place by the wizards' side.

As for Blueberry Yogurt, he can't "know" anything outside of Earthbread, and assumes the wizards killed Moonlight for not living up to their standards of perfection. His assumption, then, sends him down the spiral that eventually leads to his corruption. (Could be years before he actually does, depending on what canon says)

Moonlight, years in the future, is alone in the now-abandoned city of wizards, and sometimes she pretends her cookie dad is still around, just to assuage the loneliness. She also has no clue about what happened to him, as she wasn't able to truly rule over the world of dreams until after the beasts were sealed away and they weren't exactly dreaming in the tree. She'd occasionally think of leaving the city of wizards, to try to find her father again, but always decided against it, bound by duty (and magic) to the city. Moonlight only finds out Blueberry Yogurt "died" after Cookie Odyssey when Pure Vanilla specifically sends out Gingerbrave and co. to find her and ask for help defeating Dark Enchantress.

Am I saying Pure Vanilla having half of Shadow Milk's soul made him want to seek out Moonlight through some sort of form-transcending parental instinct? Maybe.

Even after Shadow Milk is released from the tree, he still can't go see Moonlight. He doesn't sleep, and is otherwise entirely disconnected from the world of dreams, so she can't see him or summon him to the city. He's literally made of shadows, so even if Moonlight came down to Shadow Milk in person, she's a celestial being and that kind of direct light would be horribly agonizing. Even disregarding all of that, Shadow Milk wouldn't want her to see him like he is now. Underneath the performance of ego, Shadow Milk knows he's quite literally been degraded to a shell of his former self- even without being corrupted, he's been ripped in half and "all" of his good qualities have been given to someone else. He can pretend, sure, but how long could he keep that up?

Anyway, I think they're never going to be happy. Ever.

After being denied and ignored, Lidia Thorpe, draped in a traditional possum skin cloak, stormed in the Great Hall during the reception for Charles at Parliament House in the capital shouting the following:
