The More Things Change The More (Some Stuff) Stays The Same

One of the asks you guys sent me had inspired me to go back to my old notebooks and sketches, and omg, looking back on high school me’s writing (let alone art style) was downright painful lol. Like looking at yourself in a mirror next to an old picture of you from school. 😂 But it’s fine, we all started somewhere, right?

That being said, I found a lot of similarities (core elements?) that stayed the same across the more than ten years I’ve been telling the same story. It’s just amazing that even after all the time and circumstances and perspectives that have shifted/grown/evolved after all these years, that some things at the heart of the story didn’t change at all.

So despite the more than a decade of working on this and the approximately three iterations of the same story, here are the core elements that stayed the same:

Minor Whumpee who grows up under Whumper’s ‘care’

Consequentially, minor whump

Long term captivity of several years

Whumper who’s Whumpee’s master/owner/abuser

Language barrier/communication issues

Binding ankles with chains in the beginning (what a specific trait to stay the same over the years)

Whumper has a dark past

Whumper didn’t plan on buying Whumpee but did so on a whim

Whumpee finding some sort of parental bond with their master

Whumper having to keep his vices in check around Whumpee, lest they royally fuck up the dynamic they already have (that is where the old versions and my version diverge, of course, because I asked myself “what if he didn’t keep those vices in check? who’s stopping him anyway?”)

Whumpee and Whumper body types looking basically the same, despite changes of hair color, eye color, ethnicity, etc.

Caretaker within the system who cannot make any meaningful changes to help Whumpee

A deal being struck to free Whumpee (though, spoilers on whether this deal is carried out to its full extent or not)

Noncon happening to adult!Whumpee

So, yeah, the similarities across the years were just kind of interesting to me. Are they interesting to you?

I decided to remake an old Sari or Sarie'thral drawing, I've been doing one every year to show my art evolution through the years.

Musings of an artist.

Guess who figured out how they wanna do shading in a way they like this year? Yeah!!! I feel like me from last year would be extremely proud of that fact, because I know current me sure is.

It was genuinely hard to pick what art I wanted to put for a few of the months here because I’m so proud of multiple pieces, both in terms of how they look and also how much I pushed myself with certain things (I did some big scenes!! and backgrounds!!! what the heck).

Do you see it? Your art/writing is about a ship/media that I've never seen, and of which I know absolutely nothing and yet I am compelled and moved by the unique spin you put on it. You did such a fine work that I now want to know the source material. Perhaps you even did such a fine work that the source material doesn't hold a candle to the stuff you make.

I don't even go here. I appreciate you giving me a tour though. <3
