Monstober - Day 7: Sphinx
Sphinx are my personal horror. Like, they actually manage to scare me. So... I tried to make them more likable for me, although it makes me add more fiction to an already existing concept :')
Prompt: Sphinx | Riddles // Sand // Giant Warnings: Yandere, Fem!Reader (Gets called "girl" only once but I should probably leave a note here), Violence (Sharp Teeth, Claws, Mention of Death, Mention of being buried alive, Being mauled to death (not the main character)), Monster and Monster Characteristics, Long Post
"Please... Please, you got to help me!"
Your sobs grew louder as you fell to your knees before the giant creature, your hands latching onto her paw, and for some reason, she didn't use it to crush you right then and there. Perhaps it was the desperation in your voice, or maybe the guardian of the ancient resting place of so many of your ancestors was weak to tears. Still, she didn't even growl despite you bursting into her sanctuary unannounced and, frankly, rudely.
Following the tales and warnings you had received since childhood, you should have acted properly and with dignity. But instead, you were inconsolable as you sobbed into her fur. Something about the image of the great sphinx and you, a mere human at her feet, had comical traits of one of the performances you made at the theater. However, what you once loved so much was now the furthest thing on your mind.
"Child of Man, do not sully my fur so," the sphinx finally spoke, and you rose from her paw, wiping the tears and snot from your face.
"I'm so sorry, Great Protector. But I just don't know what to do."
The sphinx shook her paw as if to get rid of the tears you had wetted it with before she sat down on her rear legs. Even though you knew she was alive, you couldn't help but feel like she was a golden monument. The statue of a god you were praying toâtruly, as she was your last hope.
"Pray tell your worries then. I've been visited so little by your kind in the last years, it shall dissolve my boredom."
"They want to marry me off!" you explained bluntly, and her slitted pupils expanded upon hearing this before she closed her eyes altogether. Her whole body collapsed as she roared bellowing laughter at your misery. More tearsâthis time from frustration and disappointmentâflooded your eyes. You couldn't even defend yourself with the sound of her laughter carrying far and wide through the cliffs all around the burial site, echoing and resounding, slapping you with her mockery.
"That's it?" she asked dismissively, making it clear your concerns weren't hers. "You come to me with a matter so trifling? Why should I care, Human, who you are to marry?"
"Because he's old!" you screamed against her roars, and though not disappearing completely, her laughter grew more subtle, turning into chuckles.
"So? Is that not desirable? Do you not wish to part ways with a man you don't want?"
It was nearly impossible to hold back your raging feelings of despair and anger and temper yourself. You should have expected her not to be indulgent to your whims, but you still had hoped as she was a protector. Leaning her head down to you, she twisted it from side to side, staring at you expectantly as she waited for your answer. Her lips parting to reveal her fangs should have made you quickly gather your bearings and leave, but you simply couldn't.
Death by being eaten, perhaps, was more merciful than what this marriage would be.
"They'll bury me with him."
Shoulders slumping, you looked down, staring at the sand softly clouding on the ground as the sphinx moved to stand before you properly again. This time, you didn't face her. Instead, you listened to the ruffling of her fur, wishing you could bury yourself in it instead. Of course, the great sphinx was no pet, but she resembled the cat you once called your own with her brown fur. It made you want to seek comfort.
"He won't make it very long anymore, and his last wish is to be married. My family couldn't refuse receiving most of his estate in exchange for my hand in marriage, but now they won't even reconsider, knowing the family plans to bury me with himâalive!"
The sphinx hummed, sitting back down again, which made more sand clouds rise, and you looked up, straight into her eyes watching you.
"It is the way of all things except mine. You would not wish for a life as long as I have. Why defy your fate?"
"Because it's too early!" you protested weakly, letting out a sigh.
"I studied to perform at the theater, to sing and dance. I worked my way up in society, and there was no one who aided me! They are all my accomplishments! And I barely had a chance to showcase what I can do and what I have studied so hard for! All I did cannot lead to me pitifully ending in the tomb of a man I didn't ask to marry!"
You sighed, shaking your head. Clasping your hands together in the motion of a prayer, you held them above your head, bowing to her as you made your final attempt at pleading with her. It almost seemed lost, but you couldn't sink deeper than you already had.
"They are coming for me soon. They always feared I'd run away, so they'll not stop their pursuit until they find me here, where I am asking, for once in my life, for help. Your help. Please, Great Sphinx, find it in you to aid me!"
"I see," she finally relented, and your pulse quickened while you tried not to get your hopes up. Her understanding meant little when she decided not to take action. "Then what do I gain?"
Your breath escaped you as you looked up at her, trying to wager her thoughts. What was there you could give? A monster's help never came cheap, but it was much easier to figure out what they wanted by letting them tell you, their instincts never betraying them, unlike how humans acted on greed and desire.
"What do you want?"
Her tail flicked in the air, smashing and rattling the ground she sat on. Briefly, she averted her eyes, rolling them unnaturally slowly in their sockets as she thought, but soon enough, her lips split into the uncanny grin that suited her well as she came to her conclusion.
"You'll solve my riddle. If you can't, you die here and now and feed me." Her grin widened, sharp teeth glistening between them as if she enjoyed the thought.
"If you solve it, I will ask the same riddle to your pursuers once they come here. If they answer it correctly, I will eat them, and you are free to go, but if not, you will stay here for as long as I wish, amusing me with your song and dance while I get to feed on those that come to get you. Is that a deal you want to make, Child of Man?"
"Yes," you replied, not thinking twice. In reality, you were nervous, your heart thumping out of your chest, ribs aching. But you had come prepared, and you knew that it was possible for the sphinx to give you a riddle, her favorite pastime. Getting to your feet, you braced yourself, noticing how the fur of the creature ruffled in excitement or perhaps the anticipation of a good meal. Regardless, you told yourself to not be discouraged by her confidence.
"Then tell me, what means more to you than it does to me?"
You knew there was no time limit on the question. And yet, you felt the pressure of the sphinx awaiting your answer with hunger in her stomach and desire in her eyes. Reckoning that she wasn't as malicious as the childhood stories made her out to be, didn't help you in the face of your demise. She may have enjoyed having her riddle solved, but to her, it didn't really matter as she came out as the winner. Only for you was it a matter of life and death, and...
"My life..." you whispered out loud, the thought escaping you before you could hold yourself back. Even with your hand clasping over your mouth could you not take back the involuntary answer you gave the sphinx, and she cackled maniacally at your mistake.
"Correct," she purred, settling down on all fours and bumping her enormous head against your body, just like a cat would. Curling your hands into fists, you resisted the urge to pet her, the sound of her purring rumbling through the ground.
"You may stand beside me, for they are coming. Their armor is such a bothering ringing in my ears, yet it will save them from nothing."
An enormous boulder fell off your shoulders, even bringing forth a small smile as you quickly moved forward, positioning yourself next to her paw again. Strangely enough, it was the safest place for you at that moment, and you held onto her fur as the rattling of armor and shouting reached you that she had long heard.
"It's not usually so lively here," the sphinx sighed, her tail flicking and whirling up more sand.
"But it is, always, someone's grave."
"So, what will it be?" the sphinx asked, impatiently waiting for the answer from the four men who had been debating over the riddle for way too long. They felt the pressure, too, you were sure.
Although they made their intentions clear that they were here for you, speaking reverently and dutifully to the sphinx, she told them they'd have to solve the riddle or die trying to tear you from her grasp. However, you didn't forget your own deal with her, and between checking if she was preoccupied, you had been gesturing to the men, trying to help them and yourself.
It felt terrible since you were trying to save yourself by sacrificing them, but it had to be done. At least, you wouldn't have to go back to your village either way, but staying with the sphinx and perhaps one day becoming her meal wasn't the consequence you wanted to have either.
So you pointed at yourself since they wanted you. Then you did the universal sign of chopping your head off to signal death. Death and life, the man should have understood it since they wanted you alive and well to marry the old man. And finally, you pointed towards them. Their life, that's all they had to say.
The sphinx had no reason to honor her promises, but at the same time, she didn't have a reason to save you either. Yet, here she was, doing it in a way that suited her, even if it was hard to believe that despite her monstrous appearance, giant size, and appetite for humans, she could be so benevolent.
"Have you decided yet?" she asked, changing up her question in hopes of making one of the men nervous enough to give an answer.
Surprisingly, one of them reacted, the youngest of the soldiers nervously stepping forward, wringing his hands and glancing back over his shoulder a few times to get confirmation.
"The... The girl," he answered, and you felt your body stiffen as he gave you a short smile, not knowing the verdict yet. However, the sphinx bristled in excitement, cackling like she had with your answer before she lowered her head, grinning at the young man.
"Wrong," she revealed, fangs snapping forward, and you yelped in horror and shock as you heard the crunching of bones and metal, one bite enough to break through the man's body. The sphinx got up on her four feet, and with an ease that shouldn't have been impossible for a body this big, she pounced on the others that screamed and readied their weapons, just not in time to fight her off.
Maybe you screamed as the men were ripped apart one by one, a fun hunt for the sphinx, but not so much for you who had to witness it.
Maybe you simply cowered in silence until their gurgles and crunching bones stopped resounding in the atrium of the ancient burial site.
"They are wrong, you know?" you heard the sphinx call out to you, and you slowly lifted your head, not wanting to see the carnage on the ground. But her face, smothered in blood and looking so much more horrific than it had before, wasn't easy to stomach either. The wind blew through the pillars surrounding the hall, dragging out the sand stained with the blood of innocent soldiers who had been sent to "rescue" you and the severity of the situation began to sink in.
You only felt the tears brimming at your eyelids, but you didn't spill them, not when you were almost worse off than these guys. The sphinx laid down next to you, separating you from the entrance and exit to her lair with her gigantic body. Letting you go was not her plan, and you had agreed to this arrangement without thinking twice.
"What about?" you asked dully, watching her very human face lick her blood-stained paws with the naturalness of any feline creature. You'd have to accept that about her if you were stuck here now. But the thought had yet to fully register.
"You mean a lot to me, even if they didn't think so. But at least I get to keep you now, and you'll be my little songbird."
Tears broke loose as you sacked to the floor, her tail flopping against the sand as you began sobbing miserably. And she let you, as she had from the very beginning. Was this an outcome she had anticipated? One she allowed to happen as the opportunity arose? You would have been dead had you not done anything, buried with the corpse of a man you didn't even know. But now that you were in this situation, you realized your death had always been predetermined.
You merely prolonged the fateful day that you'd be buried here.

The sound of rain hitting your thin single paned window woke you from your usual noon nap. Waking up with a groan, you checked your watch. A beautiful watch from Cartier, one youâve always wanted. Another gift from your beloved father, who would rather send you gifts to apologise than actually say the words. He would once again miss your birthday, this year he would fly to Turkey, for a 'very important business trip'.Â
You didnât even care where the fucker would run away to this time, heâd do anything to get away from your mum, and from your family. Anytime you would meet someone and tell them your name theyâd immediately perk up, your family was quite an old one and when the first cars were invented your ancestor was there, right with Benz himself. In current day your father ran the family company, manufacturing and transporting cars all over the world, and soon your brother would join him.
You never had much of a thing for cars, but luckily for you your older brother did. He wasnât going to be there either though. He was accepted into Harvard, and was currently studying abroad in America. A loud knock fully awakened you and you rose from your bed, you were so tired you didnât even change into comfier clothes, you just napped in your cute fall outfit of the day instead.Â
Opening the door, Farleigh almost immediately bursted into your room. He seemed angry, but he usually was. You met him in your first year, of course upon hearing your name called on in a lecture, he partnered up with you after class. So your first project was with him, he was nice enough but sometimes he could be really annoying and above himself.Â
You took a deep breath as Farleigh made himself comfortable in your bed, you did not have the energy to tell him to sit on the couch instead so you silently joined him, waiting for him to start his rant. âSo? What happened?â You asked, since he was still moping on your bed in silence. âThat fucking rat Oliver! He lends his bike to Felix ONCE and now theyâre besties! He is literally a dirt poor cunt that has no personality or anything interesting about him!âÂ
Great so thatâs what this was going to be. âChrist Far, what did he do?â You had to hold back a chuckle, you felt bad for him but when Farleigh was mad he made this really funny face. âDonât fucking laugh! Itâs not funny! You know how Felix and I were going to go to that new coffee place that just opened, and you and Eloise were going to join us after your maths class? Well fuck that apparently! Because Felix just messaged me that Oliver and him are doing an assignment together and he had to cancel!â
âDonât get me wrong Far, that really sucks but if itâs for school I donât really-â He cut you off before you could even explain yourself. âThe fucking assignment is not until next monday! Itâs wednesday for fucks sake!â You so did not have energy for this. âOkay Far, please calm down, if you do think that Oliver is doing it on purpose the last thing you want is to give him the satisfaction of pissing you off. Just stay calm about this and weâll ask if Maisie is free this afternoon to join us.âÂ
Farleigh seemed to cool off and now instead looked a bit embarrassed. âYeah, yeah youâre right. Sorry for barging in like this, didnât mean to wake you. Iâll message Maisie then, grab a coffee with me? As an apology for waking you up?â You gave him a smile and nodded. âLetâs drink it in the library, itâll be so cosy with the rain and I need to finish some homework really quick before maths today. Should I message Eloise if she wants in?â
âYeah sounds good, put on your shoes and let's go!â Farleigh was all back to his normal energised self again and you did as he said. Eloise replied that she would join you later. You and Farleigh jogged to the library, him with your coffeeâs and you trying to hold the umbrella over both of your heads. Both of you couldnât help but giggle as Farleigh almost spilled the coffee at the entrance, while you shook off the umbrella.Â
You both strolled in and walked over to a free table in the back, with a big beautiful window that showed the autumn weather outside. Farleigh slid over your iced coffee to you while he drank his hot cappuccino with way too much sugar. Farleigh grabbed his laptop to work on some essay he had due tonight and you grabbed your maths homework. After about thirty minutes of work, you both couldnât help but talk about Eloiseâs new boyfriend.Â
A loud snort accidently left your lips when Farleigh imitated the poor boy's smile, which was all teeth and kind of creepy, when you flinched at the sight of a guy peering at the two of you behind a bookshelf. Farleighâs brow furrowed and he turned to see what you were looking at behind him. Once he saw the guy he turned back to you and mouthed âwhat the fuck?â which made you laugh again.
This seemed to be the final straw for the guy and he walked over. âCould the two of you shut up. You do realise that this is a library? People are trying to actually study.â The guy sneered. You looked at him with wide eyes, where had you seen him before? He didnât seem like the guy to take literatureâŠalso not any of your other classes- oh⊠Maths. You definitely saw him there.Â
Youâve never really looked at him before. He was quite handsome if you took away the classes, khaki pants, tucked in blouse and the keys hanging from his belt, not bad. Farleigh spoke up before you could apologise. âAren't you the guy who screamed at Oliver during O week?â He looked at the guy with an expression you knew all too well, he was about to rip this guy a new one. And of course the poor guyâs face goes red as a tomato.Â
You felt bad and gave Farleigh a look, anything to stop this awful moment. Luckily Farleigh gave it a rest and the guy opened his mouth to say something, but stopped himself. He walked away instead. âWhat the actual fuck was that.â You laughed, the whole interaction was absurd. âI have no idea- Oh, El just messaged me. She is⊠on her way and will be here soon.â Farleigh read as he scanned his eyes over his phone.Â
âGood, but donât make that face again in front of her. Itâll only start something between the two of you." Then your eyes noticed something, the guy from just now, sitting all alone, fervently writing down notes. Hm, kind of sad. Only five minutes later did Eloise stumble into the library, dripping wet, with her books under her coat. âFuck me, that rain is just getting worse.â She said a little loudly as she dropped her books on the table. Earning a look from that guy from before.
âYou donât have an umbrella?â Farleigh chuckled. âNo I donât, who remembers to bring an umbrella to uni?â She scoffed. You raised your brows and smiled at Farleigh. He laughed and Eloise sat down, copying some of your already finished homework. âHurry up, we only have ten minutes until maths start.âÂ
âYeah yeah Iâll be quick. I can easily do this in five and then we be there âbout three minutes before, thatâs plenty of time.â You rolled your eyes and watched as Eloise hurriedly scrabbled on the paper. When she was done, Farleigh went back to his dorm to watch a movie, while you and Eloise headed the other way to maths, laughing when she saw you open the umbrella for the two of you.Â
Eloise always preferred to sit in the back, so thatâs where you went. Felix and Oliver were already there. To be honest you didnât know if you liked Oliver just yet, he hadnât been around for long but you just got weird vibes from him. But if Felix liked you thatâs all it takes to âget inâ. You hadnât realised when you were walking in front of Eloise that you would be seated right next to Felix.Â
You didnât mind him, but he had this sort of weird thing with girls. As if he needed to prove to himself that he could get anyone, except for you. You had no interest in him, you were more the type to have a friendship and deep connection with someone rather than hooking up. But that was exactly what Felix was, a quick fuck. You gave him an awkward smile when he grinned at you, and a small nod from Oliver.Â
Time for small talk was impossible as your professor already cleared his throat, silencing the hall. But for some reason your eyes were scanning the room. That kind of looked like- oh, nope not him. He kind of looks similar- also not him, oh, there he is. All the way to the bottom left. You instantly recognised that nose, that jaw, his soft blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes- okay, that was a lot. You had no idea what overcame you but you would definitely be thinking about him later, when you were alone. And it was the daydreams of him that got you through the boring lecture.
Thursday, October 13th 2006
âSaying what you gonâ do to meâ âBut I ainât seen nothingâ âTypical ainât hardly the type I fall forâ âI like when the physical-â You were so engrossed in the song coming from your headphones that you bumped into someone. Oh god- it was him. âOh my god, Iâm so sorry!â You said as you ripped your headphones out of your ears. âWhatever.â He mumbled, about to just step around you and move along into the building but you stopped him, grabbing his arm. Which made him turn around and look at you surprised.Â
âIâm so sorry about yesterday, I wanted to apologise then, but Farleigh can be so rude.â You smiled. He didnât respond but looked at your hand on his arm instead, which you then quickly let go. âUhm, whatâs your name?â His mouth was slightly opened as he stumbled out, âM-Michael Gavey.â He stuck out his hand and you shook it as you told him your name. âNice to meet you Michael, and again so sorry about yesterday.â He only nodded and then walked away. You subconsciously smiled and put your headphones back in, heading to your next lecture of the day.

abstract -> dear snake... we're the same as even centuries before
y/nâs perspectiveÂ
I chose a card⊠I knew it wasn't from Niki, Jake, nor Jungwon. But it had to be from Jay or Sunoo most likely from Sunoo since he was the romantic. I hate that I knew some of them. But the message won me over.
When we first met I felt drawn to love at first sight. I loved you then and I love you now, Iâll always be there to lift you up even if you don't want me there. I want to be the only one to cherish and love you. To die and live for you and only you. So I can only dream you would do that for me.Â
The masquerade was in a week and I couldn't wait.Â
âHello, lovely soulmate!â I heard as I saw Jake. âA rose for youâ he said and I smiled. All of them were on a mission to have me choose them. âHow kind of youâ I said and he smiled as he kissed my hand.Â
âYou're trying too hardâ I heard as I saw Sunghoon and Jake groaned. âDude go away!â Jake said and Sunghoon rolled his eyes.
ây/n come on let's get away from this freak!â he said and Jake looped his arm around me. âWhere are we going then?â he challenged and the two glared at each other.Â
âBoth of you are pathetic, did you forget you had a meeting with Wonyoung? Jake, you also have a meeting with the treasurersâ Jungwon said and they groaned.Â
âBye y/nnie!â they yelled.Â
âHow are you doing my love?â he asked and I smiled. âGood and you, Wonnie?â I asked and he smiled as he put his arms around my waist and kissed my forehead. âBetter when I'm around you, this masquerade thing is a lot of work,â he said and I nodded as I hugged him back.
âI know but it'll be fun, '' I said and he chuckled. âIt'll be fun if you choose me,â he said and I smiled. âEven if I don't won't you save me a dance?â I asked and he nodded. âEven if you don't, I'll steal you away,â he said, making me chuckle.
âLove birds, ughâ I heard and saw Wonyoung gagging.Â
âBack to work for both of you!âÂ
When we first met I felt drawn to love at first sight.Â
heeseungâs perspective
âWe are not changing colors,â Jungwon said. Riverfield and Decelis had similar colors which led to an argument between councils.
âThose are our colors, you guys can choose black and gray like the colors of your ancestors!â Taki suggested even if it was a joke it made me scoff.Â
âBlue and Gold don't even suit Decelis'â K said and I rolled my eyes. He was getting on my nerves⊠while my naive mate that I rejected didn't believe that he had a crush on her I do. His thoughts were annoying and filled with envy⊠whilst my oblivious princess was stupid enough to beg for his hand.Â
âWhy don't we just choose a color, we can have gold and you guys blue?â Jungwon tried reasoning and whilst EJ noddedâ âNoâ K interrupted. âK it's a good compromiseââ âThose are our colors, why should we let the vampires have that?â he said stubbornly. âBut gray and black aren't even our colors either, '' Sooha pouted.Â
âI think it's a good compromise, we can do navy blue,'' EJ suggested. âWe could go gold and white,â Jungwon said and they agreed.Â
K however didn't let his thoughts goâŠ
The meeting was dismissed when they finally left our council room. âWhy did it matter so much?â Sooha asked. âWe are rivals,â Jake suggested. âIt's also a schoolâs pride,â Jungwon added.Â
âSo howâs the soulmate thing going for you guys?â Sooha asks and I sometimes wish she would shut up.
âSheâs amazing! Tomorrow we're going to the city where she wants to show me another witch spotâ Jake said and I refrained from scoffing. He made it a habit to eat with her⊠for some reason, it helped him with control.
âOoh! I wanna go!â Sunoo said with a grin. He accepted her second and he was completely whipped for her.
âYou need to be event planningâ Jungwon scolded⊠the first one to be accepted by her.
âDonât you think youâve made a big enough enemy out of Wonyoung? You're constantly stealing her awayâ Sunghoon said⊠someone who used her, but for some reason she forgave him.Â
âHe has nothing else better to doâ Jay joked⊠he wasnât even romantically involved with her⊠yet Despite his wishes for it going slow and starting off as platonic was getting more and more romantically interested as he saw how her other soulmates kiss and dote on her.Â
âHe should be helping me with the Decelis final game,â Niki said⊠another one who first accepted her, and went against me but fixed their relationship.Â
âI'm jealous⊠you guys look so happy with her. K still hasn't accepted me⊠and she doesn't want anything to do with meâ Sooha said and they all sighed. Thoughts running around about K and how he had to get his act together which I agreed with.Â
âAt this point why not go with Heeseung?â Sunoo suggested and I refrained from glaring or scoffing. Sooha looked at me with sad eyes and I tried my best to give her a genuine smile.Â
âWill you?â she asked and I wanted to say no⊠âSureâ
I was making it my way to her to deliver papers when I overheard voices.Â
âYeah, so Jungwon and EJ agreed that we keep our colors and theyâllââ âThey agreed to split up the colors, we didn't agree on keeping black and redâ I interrupted as I opened the door.Â
I noticed her confused expression while looking at K for confirmation. Innocent and naiveâŠÂ
âK?â she asked and he turned his attention to her and smiled softly. âWe really did. Donât tell me you believe him or me?â he asked and I scoffed.Â
She looked at me confusedâŠÂ
âI just donât understandâŠâ she said. âEJ and Jungwon both agreed to split up the colors, they'd get navy blue and weâd get gold and white,â I said and K shook his head. âWe agreed Declis would have vampire colors, black and red,â K said, completely lying.Â
âBut Declis doesn't use red or black?â she asked now confused but looking at K for confirmation. âIt's the colors of vampiresââ âHeâs a liar, I understand not to believe me but ask Jungwon yourself or any of your soulmates,â I said and she looked at K.Â
âK⊠are you lying to me? Do I have to go to EJ?â she asked in a soft tone and he sighed. âYou understand right? Bright Sunâs colors are gold and orange, it classifies too muchâ he tried saying and she looked at me confused.Â
âI just don't understand why you'd lie?â she asked and he scoffed.
âYou really believe him? The same vampire who rejected you day one?â he asked, now angry. His thoughts swirl of betrayal and begging her to take his side.Â
âWell⊠me and Heeseung may not have a good friendship but heâs respected me and never lied about council work. Or at least not that I know ofâŠâ she said and I was glad she trusted me even a little bit. âBesides, we agreed on these terms⊠Why are you trying to go behind everyoneâs back?â she asked and he sighed.Â
âForget it⊠I get it, even though he rejected you, youâll still follow him around like a foolâ he said as he stormed off. I looked at her to see she was confused and shockedâŠÂ
âUhm⊠I'm sorry about thatâ she apologized and I shook my head. âThank you for trusting me, Iââ âThough I know youâve lied to me in the past, I want to clear that just because I trusted you now that I might not in the future,â she said and I nodded.Â
I did lie to her in the past⊠with Jungwon and Sunoo. Even with Jay⊠so why lie to K?
âIâll handle this, thank youâÂ
K was acting strange⊠he was also getting more annoying and out of bounds. He was crossing the line with her and with her soulmates. So why was he trying so hard to get her when knowing Sooha would be happy to accept him?Â
It was now getting out of hand that he was interfering with her when she was happy.Â
I made my way to HYBE academy where I tried to find someone to give me advice. âOh? Heeseung, looking for your sister?â I heard and I saw Jeonghan-hyung. I nodded when he seemed to laugh at me⊠âSheâs been out of hand with the council,â he said and I sighed. âWith her soulmates?â I asked and he nodded. âSheâs in the council room with one of them,â he said as he waved and left.Â
I went to the council room when I heard yellingâŠÂ
âWho do you think you are?!â I saw⊠a dragon as I opened the door. She smiled at me with that dangerous deceitful smile. âHeeseung! Do you do anything?â she asked, ignoring the man beside her. He seemed to scoff and glare at me.
âI wanted to talk but if you areââ âOh? You can talk to me any time, Hee. Jongho, it was a pleasure with this conversation but I'm needed,â she said as she looped her arm around me and smiled at him as we left.Â
âHe seems as hateful as his past life,â I said and she chuckled. âHe hated me then and still hates me now. Nothing newâ she said and I knew she wanted to change her fate with them but deep inside she still hated them just the same.Â
âSo⊠is this about your soulmate?â she asked and I nodded. âHmm. I saw her with Jake⊠seems like they were closeâ she said and I scoffed⊠I still couldn't believe sheâd forgive him even while she changed those bandages, seeing that burn on her neck. A reminder of what he did for another woman.Â
âYouâre an idiot. You love her⊠love at first sight. Not even Sooha has done that for you, so why do you keep pushing her away?â she asked and I didnât know anymore.Â
âYou have no reason to push her away. Theyâve accepted her⊠you're just being stubborn and self-destructiveâ She was right. She always wasâŠÂ
âWhen you⊠first met them. You didnât love them, you kept them as pawns⊠what's different now dear sisterâ I teased and she sighed. âThe mate bond does wonders⊠I wanted so badly to succumb to it then. So it's hard to finally let me feel love for themâ she said and I nod.Â
âItâs our pride,â she said and I chuckled.Â
âWe really haven't changed, have we?â I asked and she smiled.Â
âNo⊠we really haven't my dear familiarâÂ
y/nâs perspectiveÂ
âI donât know why heâs acting this way⊠I'm sorry for how heâs been behavingâ he apologized and I sighed. âI just donât understand⊠I thought at first it was a joke, a lie, but I didnât expect him to genuinely have a crush on meâ I said and he sighed. âI donât think he does⊠I think he just doesnât want to accept Sooha for fear sheâll regret itâ EJ explained and I sighed.Â
âBut⊠to fight with Heeseung? Why?â I was confused by both boys' behavior. I heard a knock when Sangyeon popped in. He offered a smile and gave me files. âI know it's rude⊠but I overheard, '' he said and I sighed. âDonât worryââ âBut, I may not understand mate customs but⊠sometimes guys will settle with people who they think can offer them comfort. It seems like K and you understood each other on some sort of levelâ he offered and I did.Â
âI was also going to ask, how was the masquerade going to work?â he asked and I smiled. âUhm. Weâll have masks for our class offered to the school. So the colors of our school for example yours were Red, right? You will be given a mask of the design of your choice to use, it's the same thing with the telegrams you have to use your class card. So IST Academy has the logo and the color red. You can write to someone asking them to meet with youâ I explain and he nods.Â
âI didnât expect to get any, let alone from different classes,â he confessed and I chuckled. âA lot of the council members actually got a bunch of them. Wonyoung alone gets one each hourâ I said and he laughed.Â
âDid you decide on one already?â he asked and I nodded. âI hope for your own sake, it's your mateâ EJ said and I chuckled.Â
It couldnât be anyone else.Â
heeseungâs perspective
As I made it back inside, walking the hallways I noticed yelling. âWatch where you're going!â I heard⊠Jake? âMe? What about you, just cause youâre up and cozy with y/n you think youâ" "Shut up!â Jake yelled now pissed as he grabbed his collar and I sighed.Â
I could see Jake was close to swinging and turning violent. âJake, let him go,â I said and he glared at me. âI did nothing wrongââ âI know, but you should be a bigger person. Something he should learn fromâ I said and he laughed and let me peel him away from the wolf who scoffed.Â
âA bigger person would never harm his mateââ âA bigger person wouldnât chase anotherâs mate,â I said and scoffed. âYouâre a hypocrite Lee Heeseung,â he said and I rolled my eyes.Â
âNo, I'm not⊠Iâve never been in a romantic relationship or tried with your mate. I may have rejected mine, but I didnât for another personâ I said and he looked confused. My actions⊠didnât show it but it was true.Â
âStop picking fights with council members⊠y/n wouldnât like hearing that you hurt Jake or any of them,â I said and he scoffed and walked away.Â
âThanks⊠for actually taking my side,â Jake said and I sighed. âYou werenât in the wrong this time,â I said and he scoffed. âWhat's that supposed to mean?!â he yelled and I laughed. âJust donât get into too much trouble,â I teased and he laughed.Â
âYou know I missed this Heeseung,â he said and I sighed. âJake?â I said and he looked at me with a smile. He really was improving, he was also happy.Â
âIâm sorry for being such a bastard these last few monthsâ
We went back to the dorm when I saw them all⊠just how long did it take them to join sides?Â
âJake, are you okay?â I heard Jay ask him, seeing that he was a bit roughed up. âOh? Yeah, just K being a jealous dogâ he said and I laughed.Â
âHeeseung helped me though⊠K seems to listen to you moreâ he said and I shrugged. âHeeseung is not being a jerk for once?â Jay teased and I glared. âOh shut up,â I said and he laughed.Â
âSo you're back to normal? Got the stick out of your ass?â Sunghoon said and I scoffed. âI wouldnât talk so lightly, Sunghoon,â I said and he laughed.Â
âWhy have you been such a jerk recently?â Sunoo asked and I sighed. âDo you know how⊠I told you guys I was a witch?â I said and they nodded. âI went to the younger sister school of Bright Sun. For the one for kids, I shared a class with a girl named l/n y/nâ
I was happy that I finally seemed to be on good terms with them now.Â
Now they seemed to understand my behavior and I admit how much of a bastard I was to them. How mean and cruel I acted⊠but everything was okay. Just like it was before, just with the girl I used to have a crush on. Who knew she was my soulmate?
I made it to the view of the ocean where I saw K.Â
âYou really need to let go of your insecurities,â I said and he noticed me there. âGoââ âYou need to fix it⊠send Sooha that card you wrote, sign your name and sheâll come running to youâ I said and he didnât say anything.Â
âI wrote a letter to y/n, not Sooha,â he said and I sighed. âIt's impossible to lie to K. You did send her a letter but she wonât choose it⊠she organized all the piles and didnât even read any confession that didnât come from Decelis,â I said and he knew it was true.Â
âYou donât like her⊠youâre just jealous sheâs happy,â I said and he chuckled. âHow can I ever be with Sooha when you're around?â he asked and I sighed. âSooha doesnât like me, and I donât like her. I have to bite my tongue from telling her how stupid and naive sheâs being to my mate. But love blinds you K, and nothing more important than the person you loveâ I said and he only stared at me.Â
âWhy⊠are you speaking as if you love her? You rejected her firstâŠâ he said and I chuckled.
âBecause I loved her even before I diedâÂ

Oranges
I peel oranges neatly.
The sections come apart cleanly, perfectly in my hands.
When Emily peels an orange, she tears holes in it.
Juice squirts in all directions.
âKate,â she says, âI donât know how you do it!â
Emily is my best friend.
I hope she never learns how to peel oranges.
Jean Little
Six months.
You had six months before the wedding.
You had feared that Samantha and Frank would rush through their ceremony as much as they had rushed through their engagement, but a call from Frank was now indicating you the precise date for the festivities. May. A ceremony in Spring.
You had six months to destroy their wedding and make them see reasonâŠ
You drank a gulp of your coffee, waiting for your best friend to join you for breakfast. SiobhĂĄn had arrived the previous day in Dublin, you had spent most of the afternoon and evening crying in her arms and telling her all about what had happened. Her response was first to insult Frank and his ancestors all the way through five generations, then help you get absolutely trollied, and finally to offer you her help in your devilish plan to get the man you loved back. A real best friend behaviourâŠ
Now, you were waiting for her to wake up, as she was staying at your place for the couple of weeks she was in Dublin. Your coffee was growing cold already in your hands, you winced at the taste but drank it anyway. Not long ago, you thought everything in life was smiling at you, that the sun was everywhere. Now, your luck seemed to have run out, even your coffee didnât have your back anymoreâŠ
âOuch⊠my head⊠God, remind me never to get drunk on cheap tequila againâŠâ
SiobhĂĄn let herself fall in the chair next to you in your kitchen, making you chuckle as she rubbed at her temples, trying to cure her hangover. All she managed to do though was to hide her face behind her bright auburn hair.
âI assume you donât want to eat anythingâŠâ you mumbled into your mug, and the choking sound your friend made was answer enough.
âPlease, have mercy on me.â
âHow come Iâm the one with a broken heart and yet youâre the one who got so badly hammered last night?â
âI need to make you feel sorry for me so youâll feel less miserable about yourself.â
âHow generous of youâŠâ
âI know, my altruism shall be my doom, one dayâŠâ
She turned to you then, growing more serious.
âAre you feeling better though?â she asked with genuine care and worry. You gave her a weak smile.
âYeah⊠youâre helping.â
âGoodâŠâ
âI need to get ready. Iâm meeting up with Andrew this afternoon. Now that we have dates for the wedding and parts of the preparation, we need to start planning what weâll do.â
âSo⊠you will really carry on with that plan?â
You frowned at her.
âOf course. Do you have a better idea?â
âNo⊠I donât. But it still is a bad idea.â
âI know that it sounds kind of crazy but⊠then again, I donât have know what else I could do. I donât have anything left to lose with Frank, so⊠might as well try, even if itâs madness, even if it failsâŠâ
ââŠEven if itâs highly unethical.â
âI swear to God, if you start talking philosophy nowâŠâ
âIâm a philosopher, thatâs what I doâŠâ
âIâm talking to my friend now, not the professor.â
âRight⊠it still sounds like a terrible idea.â
âLast night you were ready to help!â
âOh, I will. Even though Iâm not sure how I can help. I will, because I donât see any other way to support my friend in need.â
âThank you.â
âButâs itâs a terrible idea. Christ, Y/N⊠Frank is an asshole! He left you after years of relationship, while he was engaged to you, for another woman he proposed to on a whim⊠heâs a gobshite. Leave him be! Get over him! Have incredible sex with another man!â
You chuckled at that.
âIâm setting you up on Tinder!â
âAbsolutely the fuck not! If you do it, Iâll never talk to you again!â
SiobhĂĄn threw her phone on the table, defeated.
âAnd this⊠Andrew is ready to plan all that with you?â
âIt was his idea.â
âTwo lunatics for the price of one⊠Is he handsome at least, that colleague of yours?â
âSiobhĂĄn!â
âWhat?! All Iâm saying is that⊠you are both single now! Both grieving long-term relationships that ended in betrayals⊠Some good sex with a handsome chap would definitely help you relaxâŠâ
âI am not going to sleep with my colleague.â
âYouâre asking yourself too many questions.â
âIâm not! Youâre just insane! Iâm not going to sleep with Andrew!â
âWhy? Is he ugly or something?â
âHe⊠that is not the point.â
âOooooh⊠so heâs handsome, then? How is he?â
You cleared your throat.
âTall,â was the first thing that came to your mind, before you silently slapped yourself for answering.
âHow much?â
âI donât know⊠above 2 metersâŠâ
âWhat?â
âYeah like⊠6â6â or somethingâŠâ
âWowâŠâ
âYeah.â
She pulled out her phone while stealing a gulp of your coffee and wincing at the taste of the cold liquid.
âWhat are you doing?â
But she didnât answer your question. Instead, she kept on typing on her phone. And then her eyes grew round.
âWait⊠you said⊠Andrew Hozier-Byrne, right?â
âYes?â
She turned the screen towards you. She had searched for his picture on the university website and was now showing you a picture of Andrew with his long curls let loose on his shoulders, a shy smile adorning his lips, his glasses perched on his nose and wearing a black turtleneck. He was posing in front of a tree on the grounds of the campus.
âThat guy?!â she insisted, and you nodded.
âYeah, thatâs him.â
âHim?â
âYeah.â
âAnd heâs taller than the Empire State Building too?â
You rolled your eyes.
âYeah, heâs very tall,â you nodded.
âYou need to ride him.â
âSiobhĂĄn!â
âY/N! Heâs gorgeous! Heâs single! What are you waiting for?!â
âI donât want to sleep with Andrew, I want to have Frank back!â
She rolled her eyes, looked at Andrewâs picture again.
âWell⊠I would like to investigate if all parts of him are⊠proportionate, for sureâŠâ
âSiobhĂĄn!â
âHey, if youâre not interested in him, I can be!â
It was your turn to roll your eyes.
âWhatever you sayâŠâ
She stared at you for a moment, silence filling up the empty space of your kitchen, only disturbed by the rhythmic sound of the rain outside.
âI just want you to be okay,â she spoke in a tender voice, and you nodded.
âI know.â
âDo you really think getting Frank back would make you happy?â
âI do. I have to try.â
She heaved a sigh.
âAlright, then letâs look at that schedule of yours. We need to make a plan. I donât trust either of you to make it work!â
âHey!â
âY/N, youâre not petty enough for this. And that guy looks like a sweetheart. A tall, handsome sweetheart. But I am fucking evil when I want to be. So letâs get to work, and fuck up that wedding!â
âSo⊠thatâs your new colleague?â
Andrew nodded, suddenly longing for a cigarette, even though he had quitted smoking years before. A side-effect of stress and a growing depressive state. He didnât yield to his urge though, merely kept on staring at his ceiling as he laid on his sofa, legs dangling over the edge, idly petting Elwood.
âSheâs hot,â Alex stated, looking at your picture on his phone. He had googled you and had found your profile on the university website.
âAlexâŠâ Andrew rolled his eyes.
âWhat? She is!â
âIâm in love with Sam. And I forbid you to sleep with my colleague!â
âWhy not? If youâre too depressed to get laid, I certainly am not.â
Andrew glowered at his friend, lounged in his armchair.
âAlexâŠâ
âWhat?â
âJust⊠donât joke about that.â
His friend raised an eyebrow at Andrew, the ghost of a teasing smirk on his lips.
âAlright⊠back to your stupid plan then?â
âDo you have a better idea?â
âNot really, no.â
âThen help me.â
Alex grew more serious, his gaze softening as he looked at his best friend.
âHave you already thought that maybe⊠this was for the best? Maybe you deserved better than Sam?â
Andrew snorted.
âYeah⊠very funnyâŠâ
âAndyâŠâ
âI love herâŠâ
âBut she doesnât love you enough, Andy. Youâve got to stop thinking that sheâs too good for you, she isnât! Youâre a good guy, youâre smart, youâre not too bad-lookingâŠâ
âThanks,â Andrew mumbled without being able to refrain a chuckle.
âIâm serious. Youâre not a bad person, youâre not unworthy of being loved for who you are. Sam is grand, but⊠you could have better than her. You could have someone who cares more deeply about you, who supports you more, who would let you love her the way you want to be lovedâŠâ
âChrist⊠since when have you become such a shrink?â
âAndyâŠâ
Alex heaved sigh, sat straighter in his armchair.
âI just mean that⊠I know whatâs going on in your head. Iâve known you long enough to know what youâre doing right now. And itâs not helpful. Itâs not helpful, and itâs actually dragging you down. Sam is grand, for many reasons. But perhaps you were simply not meant for each other. You could fall in love again, you could have someone better, someone who will love you better than she didâŠâ
âShe did love me!â
âI know she did. But she also pushed you away time and time again. She never showed up for your accomplishments, she never tried to support your career as a poet, she never came to one of our gigsâŠâ
âSheâs not interested in poetry or music.â
âAnd I hate cinnamon rolls, but I still ate them when Charlie made them for me.â
âSo⊠I should move on as successfully as youâve moved on from your ex, whom you havenât been able to forget after two full years?â
He saw Alex clenching his jaw, his gaze saddening. Guilt came to gnaw at Andrewâs heart the second his words passed his lips.
âSorry⊠that was uncalled for. Iâm just⊠I canât move on. I donât want to move on. I donât want better or worse than Sam, I want Sam.â
Alex heaved a sigh.
âAlright, so whatâs the plan?â
âY/N and I are going to work together to make Frank and Sam see that theyâre acting stupid, bring them back to their senses.â
âPerhaps theyâre not acting crazyâŠâ
âTheyâre engaged! After one month together?!â
âYeah⊠that does sound quick.â
âI know that⊠Sam and I were going through a bit of a rough patch. I know that we were drifting apart a little when she left. But we werenât strangers to each other either. We werenât⊠it wasnât that bad. I still loved her, we were still seeing each other, we were still communicating and reaching out and⊠I didnât think it was too bad. I was tired⊠I was frustrated with my writingâŠâ
âYour writing?â Alex interrupted his friend with a frown.
Elwood shifted from his spot on the floor, getting up to rest his head directly on Andrewâs stomach. He looked at him with a soft black stare that made Andrewâs heart melt, and he resumed petting his dogâs head.
âI havenât been able to write a single line in six months.â
âWow⊠thatâs⊠long. Especially for you.â
âYeah⊠I donât know whatâs going on. I canât write a single verse.â
âWhat does Caroline say about this?â
âSheâs a very understanding agent, luckily. Sheâs not pressuring me yet. Sheâs giving me time and space.â
âSo, you didnât tell her it was a complete drought, but just a slow episode.â
âOf course, Iâm not suicidal⊠yet.â
They exchanged a smile, but there was sadness in both of their gestures.
âI donât know why I canât write anymore. And it scares the shit out of me, Alex. What if I canât be a poet anymore? How am I supposed to say what I need to express then? Will it come back? I couldnât be a musician, what if I canât be an artist at all?â
âNo, Andy, youâre not a fraud, stop it,â Alex interrupted his friend, knowing where this conversation was heading. âAnd you didnât become a musician because you chose not to have the lifestyle that went with it, because you chose to study and write instead, and be there for your family when they needed you. You had the talent for it, though. You still have. Iâll hire you if you want to finally drop out of college!â
Andrew laughed at that, brought back to those college days when he had met Alex, when he had hesitated to quit studying to get a proper chance at singing. But instead of accepting some studio time, he attended his exams, passed his classes, changed his major the next year to head towards literature and poetry. And music remained a passion, a hobby, while words became his lifeâŠ
âHow is your band doing, by the way?â he changed the subject, feeling too vulnerable and guiding the conversation on his friend instead to release the tension that was making his body ache. Elwood could feel it, the way Andrew was in pain, he was rubbing his snout against his humanâs stomach.
âGood. Weâre doing a few festivals, we have some gigs planned over the next couple of months, mostly around Cork.â
âThatâs nice.â
âYou could come.â
âAnd miss torturing my students with essays?! NahâŠâ
âYou could avoid the grading.â
âThat is a strong argument in your favour.â
âBut donât drag the conversation away from the crisis at hand!â Alex admonished his friend. âWhat is the plan then? About Sam?â
âWe have the date of the wedding, and Frank and Sam have reached out to Y/N and I to get some help for like⊠dresses, cakes, planning stuff⊠Sam asked me to sing.â
Alex let out a wry, astonished chuckle.
âSo, the woman doesnât give two shites about your passion for music and poetry, but the second she needs a musician she comes running?â
Andrew glowered at his friend, but he couldnât deny his words. He had thought them first, as soon as Sam had asked him to sing. She had never cared about his artistic endeavours, never read his poetry, even though he wrote about her; never gone to see him play, even when they were young. Although, it wasnât quite true. She had come once, at the very beginning of their relationship. She thought he had talent. She was bored though, even if she tried to hide it. Andrew had not asked her to come again, had merely told her that she was always welcome to any of their gigs, but she never offered to go see him again.
And it was such a cruel demand too, so insensitive, it didnât sound like her. Maybe her own excitement was blinding her, making her selfish. Whatever it was, Andrew could feel tears rising at the mere thought. Elwood moved to rub his head all over Andrewâs chest.
âAnyway, weâve got to plan our next move.â
âGood luck with thatâŠâ Andrew nodded. He reckoned he would need luck, alrightâŠ

"Hello," Penelope says.
The man in her bed smiles, shadowed in shades of blue and white in the moonlight. It is barely the smile she remembers; she can see slivers of the person she used to know shining like gold in rock, buried in layers of muck, and it is not entirely kind. "Hi."
His voice is changed too. Rougher. Haunted. Without repentance.
She shifts, hands trembling with adrenaline as she reaches for the covers, as she pulls it over both of them. Freshly washed and pampered and cleaned, the man in her bed looks much closer to a king, even with the new lines of stress in his face and the lines of grey in his hair that match her own.
They are done crying. Sins confessed, grief passed.
Penelope stares at him, drinking in the sight. Unbidden, the slight tail she'd inherited from her mother starts beating at the bedcovers gently, as if she were a dog, ears flicking as she looks.
The man laughs, as if it escapes him in the face of her foolishness. "Is that for me?"
"I knew you were coming back," Penelope says instead of a reply, grinning manic and smug. She leans closer, lets her weight fall forward, tilts her head with a smirk.
The man huffs a breath. He leans closer with his own bared teeth, wicked grin. "I knew you were waiting."
Penelope preens, full body rolling with delight, a purr in her throat. Twenty years she's waited to hear it, to know that her faith was matched just as violently, that her poor husband never feared for her leaving. To be told she was a good wife, a good mate- but only from the one she wanted to hear it from.
"Am I what you expected then?" The other rumbles suddenly, hair falling across his forehead. His eyes are no longer the clear bluish-grey he left with- they change colors in the light now, blue and brown and dark; but still grey. More dangerous, sharp and ruthless, unwavering. This is a man to be feared. When all the chosen of Troy had all fallen, the gods could not defeat this one man.
Penelope smiles in the way she'd been taught not to, all of her ancestors' razor-sharp canines on display, her emotions writhing with joy and satisfaction in her chest. Her instincts scream for happiness, that her husband had killed so many for her, soaked his hands in blood so he could hold her with them gently. A freshwater nymph's ideal, and he was all hers.
"Yes," She says, because she had expected him to come home heavy with loss and battle, wounded and scarred. "Better," She purrs as she draws him above her, because he does not regret any of it, and the blood-soaked devotion feels divine. He is fearless about killing now, like Penelope always had been, from when her mother first birthed her in the wilds of the untouched rivers to when she'd taken the neighbouring state's farmers hostage for the harvest because they dared to spread rumors about her rule and her son and her husband, just two weeks before.
He chuckles, canting his head to the side when he pushes himself down with a gasp. It is not the bashful, flustered movements of before, where he would hide behind his hair and coax himself down gently upon her- yet even as he slides himself down upon her like a conqueror, like a hardened general and soldier and king, he still smiles that same shy grin when she places a hand on his cheek to tilt him back, and it seems to shine out from every part of him until all the muck falls away, leaving only the person she knows behind, bright and new.
"Odysseus," She breathes. "My husband."
"A monster," He replies, and she can see the depths of guilt and misery and horror in his eyes. Can see the splash marks of ichor that haven't faded across his collarbones and shoulders, the scars that run through him, the ghost of all those who didn't return behind him.
She laughs. "My love," She counters, and watches it all fold away as Odysseus leans forward to meet her smugness, eyes sparking with starved delight. She will glut him upon her love, her joy, so he never regrets anything he did to make it back to her, to reward him for everything he did. She smirks. "Move."
-
Later, he watches her chest rise and fall, face slack in sleep but lips still curled in a smile, unfearing of whose arms she sleeps in.
Next to his wife, he had said, with all the fury he'd ever had, with the determination of knowing he'd fight the Fates themselves to come back to her, that even if it was prophesized that it wouldn't be him to hold her, he'd still spend every inch of him trying anyway. Knowing that wishing in its success meant dooming Penelope to sleep next to a monster.
He huffs, smiling as he presses light kisses to every part of her skin he can reach, greedy, teeth hidden behind his lips.
(They weren't sharp when he left. His eyes never glowed in the dark.)
Penelope smiles suddenly, awake- sharp, white teeth peeking out from her crooked lips. Her eye is slitted when she cracks one open, shining blue in the darkness. She catches his lips with her own when he next passes her and murmurs at him to close his eyes.
His wife may sleep next to a monster. But he sleeps next to one too.

Waiting
âI think I am going to die in childbirth,â Tiriel says, pressing her face to her knees.
Astarion would sigh if he could. Tiriel sits shoulder-deep in a bath of warm water, as the vampire washes her hair and rubs her back.
âYou arenât going to die. You are a half-elf and I am sure the child is rather small. Look at your belly, you are in your last month and itâs not really showing.â
Tiriel turns away. Well, to call her belly small would be an underestimation â her slim body is currently betraying pregnancy. Itâs covered in stretch marks that wonât disappear, ever. But again, Astarion has seen many pregnant human women in Daggerlake within the last five years and Tiriel has definitely been spared, carrying someone who takes after their elven ancestors.
But once Astarion thinks heâs managed to cheer her up, Tiriel sniffs.
âWhat if something is wrong with the baby? You are a vampire! I love you and all that, but you are still undead! What am I even carrying inside? And what if the child is sick? Or deformed? OrâŠWhat if it is going to kill me?â
âI can promise you, if something goes wrong, we are saving you,â Astarion splashes water on her hair.
âThank you.â
He kisses her shoulder. âDonât worry that much, the last thing you need is to cause a complication.â
Tiriel touches his fingers.Â
Astarion adds more soap to the tub. The scent of vomit and sweat still lingers on Tirielâs skin and Astarion takes a clean piece of rug.
Tiriel has been feeling so bad in the last few days she barely left her bed. Her legs hurt, she couldnât eat without vomiting, and she hardly slept because of back pains. She finally made herself go out that evening to eat properly, but, the moment Tiriel finished her dinner, she felt nauseous and everything Astarion had cooked for her ended up on her home shirt.
That moment, Astarion had enough of that and carried Tiriel to the bath.Â
âI'm sorry,â she says.
âWhat for?â
âI look disgusting.â
âNothing is disgusting about a pregnant woman,â Astarion says, rubbing her left ear. âBesides, Iâve seen and done much worse things than giving a bath to someone Iâve knocked up. Your condition is my fault and I am taking full responsibility! Now, let me wash your front.â
Tiriel presses her back against the tub allowing Astarion to get to her belly and legs. Astarion smiles seeing the visible bump and carefully rubs the skin.
He is so close he can hear the second heartbeat.Â
It is not clear to him when the child is going to be born. Elves are pregnant for two years, but Tirielâs body is hardly capable of doing so. Humans need nine months for the same process, but Astarion has learned from the healers in Secomber, the closest big town to Daggerlake, that itâs never clear with half-elves. And it also depends on the child â Astarion tries to think about the baby as an elf with just a bit of human ancestry (still enough to fuck up the gentle elven biology).
But in realityâŠ
The child is half-him, half a vampire anyway. And that should bother him.
He is afraid of that moment. He waits for that moment to come. And he also misses Tiriel in sensual terms. He wants her blood (which is out of reach for him till she stops breastfeeding), he wants her body (they havenât had sex ever since she got pregnant).Â
And he wants her to stop being in such pain daily.
âI look ugly,â Tiriel chuckles. âDonât try to say itâs not true.â
âIt's not. You are beautiful!â
Suddenly Tiriel flicks his nose. âMy eyes are here.â
Astarion realizes heâs been staring at her swollen breasts and small droplets of white liquid on Tirielâs nipples.
âStop all this nonsense, Tiriel!'' Astarion takes her leg and stretches it to wash it better. âI like caring about you. I like how you look. And I absolutely love that it's me who did this to you. It all feeds my vampiric possessiveness, after all!â
âAnd I love that it was you who did this to me,â Astarion feels Tirielâs fingers on his cheek.
âNow, get out of the water before it gets too cold!â Astarion brings towels. âIs food still out of the question?â
âI want something hot to drink.â
âI will make you herbal tea, then.â
Astarion, after making sure she is dry, carries Tiriel to bed.
He looks outside. What he loves about his house in the underground part of Daggerlake is the big windows. There is no point in hiding from the sun, and Astarion can enjoy going outside whenever he wants. Besides, the biggest part of the town is underground too, and Astarion also doesnât feel like an outcast.
And his neighbors have seen much worse things than vampires who know the law.
Suddenly Tiriel yelps. He turns to her and notices the night shirt sheâs put on is wet.Â
But wasnât Tiriel's skin dry when he took her from the bath?
Tiriel hugs her belly and lets out a cry of pain.Â
âTirielâŠâ Astarion rushes to her. No, not today. He still needs time to get ready.
Tiriel grabs his shoulder. âGo to the healer⊠I am.. GodsâŠâ
The child has decided to be born today. ------ You can read what happens next in Little Bundle of Darkness --

Prologue Link: https://www.tumblr.com/lynn-w3st/747076610473263104/mk1-thantophobia-prologue
You were awoken by the sound of birds chirping outside of your window. The sunlight gently beamed through your curtains as you sat up from your bed and groan tiredly. It was time to get ready for work as your owns a small bakery.
With a sigh you decided to get ready for the day as you needed all of the money you can get to help your father to pay for his medication. You wore you standard clothes and skirt apron.
Your father walk towards you with his cane in hand and gave you a weak smile. âYou know if you feel burden to continue the family business I wonât hold you accountable. I want you to live a normal and steady life.â He began as you sigh and brought him into a hug. Your father began to cry as he felt useless for burdening you a lot.
âItâs ok father, I want you to be happy and safe. Mother may have walk out on us but you have always been there for me growing up. Please donât ever feel like you are a burden to me.â You said softly as you wipe a tear from his face.
Your father place a kiss on your forehead and gave you a blessing before handing your satchel to you. âIt seems you are stubborn like your old man.â He said as he chuckled before coughing uncontrollably. You frown and use your own handkerchief to wipe his bloody mouth.
âI wonât be out to much long father. Please by the elder gods go get some rest and lay down.â You said as you then escorted your sick father towards the bed and helping lay down before covering him up with some warm blankets.
âTake care my daughter. Donât speak to any strangers unless they are customers.â He said as you nodded before getting up and leaving his bedroom. You bid farewell to him before leaving the house and locking it behind you and hop on your bicycle rode towards the village market.
The fresh spring air breeze was gently blowing on your face as everyone in the village were tending and working on the fields. A sense of calm and peace was evident in your mind.
The ride to the marketplace wasnât much long as many vendors and retailers began to open and prepare their products and stands. You came into a stop in front of the bakery as the baker Jun was waiting patiently for your arrival.
âFor a second I thought something happen. Howâs your old man doing?â He asked as you got off of your bicycle and park it against the wall. âHeâs still not doing well, had a high fever last night. Almost gave me a heart attack.â You said as you opened your bakery shopâs door.
âHey donât worry kiddo, your old man will get better soon. Heâs one tough man and Iâm very proud to be your godfather. It is my duty to make sure you are safe.â Jun said as he ruffled your hair. âThanks uncle, now those pastries and breads wonât bake themselves.â You said.
The both of you began to set up and clean up the shop before any customers came in. The shop has been passed down from generation to generations. It belong to your ancestors before passing it down to your parents. You turn on the open sign before helping Jun make the goods.
Few hours later, you were humming a lullaby tone as you place the newly fresh batches of breads and pastries on the display cabinet.
So far you and Jun had quite a few customers come in to order your guys famous boba milk tea. The market was filled with people who were happily chatting away and shopping around the stores. The radio was playing some calm music as the bakeryâs door open to reveal an old man.
âHello welcome! If you need any assistance please feel free to ask me.â You said as the old man nodded and looked over the display. Jun was outside in the back smoking a cigarette.
âHow much for these moon cakes.â The man said as you happily told him the price. The bell jingled again as two familiar faces enter the shop. The old man grabbed the two boxes of the moon cakes before standing before you to pay before leaving the bakery to go shop again.
â(Y,N)â Kung Lao said as he greeted you with a smile as you left your position from the register and rounded the corner to hug your two best friends. âRaiden! Kung Lao!â You said happily.
You brought them both into a tight hug. Jun smiled and greeted the both of them when he entered. âI hope Kung Lao hasnât been giving you any trouble Raiden.â You asked giving your friend the funny stinky eye. Raiden chuckled at your sassy attitude while Jun choked a laugh.
Kung Lao let out a fake gasped and place a sassy hand over his heart in a dramatic gesture. You rolled your eyes and laugh as his reaction.
âHow you could you say that to the Nicki Minaj great Kung Lao.â He said dramatically making you giggled more before making a baggie full of pastries and goodies. âHere are some freshly baked pastries and breads for you both. Itâs on the house.â You said as Raiden was speechless.
âOh no no (Y,N) let me pay for it please you are to kind.â He said as you shook your head and practically shoved the small bag into his arms. âPlease I insists, Raiden! You and Lao have been very helpful to me. Especially in hard times since my father is still very ill.â You said.
Raiden gave you a reassuring smile before accepting the bag. âThank you (Y,N) Kung Lao and I will enjoy your pastries. Hope your father gets better soon.â He said as he and Kung Lao bid farewell to you before leaving the bakery.
You waved back to them and resumed going back to work as more customers came into the shop. By the time you had finish paying the last customer, the sun was beginning to set in the horizon. Many of the stores began to close up and head back to their home for the day.
Jun helped you place the chairs up as you were counting register. âWhy donât you go home for the day kiddo. I can finish here and lock up the store.â He said as you hesitated for a bit. âAre you sure, Jun ? I donât mind staying.â You said
âYeah go take care of your old man. Be careful and donât speak to strangers.â He said as you gave him a thumbs up and left the bakery. You place your satchel on the basket and got on your bicycle. You waved goodbye to Jun before riding towards your home to make some dinner.
You parked your bike against the side of the house and walked towards the front door to open it but found another small box that very similar to the one that you received last night.
However, this time the writing had a different message on it that read; In this timeline âtill next Iâd be choosing you over and over again.
Again that cold and dreadful feeling appeared as everything went quiet and your body was filled with goosebumps. You decided to not think much of it and enter your cozy house.
âI was worried for a bit my child. You normally donât stay this late. Iâm assuming Jun is going to finish up.â Your father said as made his way to you. âSorry father for worrying you. Are you feeling a bit better?â You asked your father.
âI feel a bit better, my daughter. Come letâs us eat some dinner. Youâve had a very busy day.â He said leading you towards the kitchen table that various of your favorite spicy dishes.
âOk papa, Iâm starving and by the way Raiden and Kung Lao stop by. They are going out of town for a few months and they said that hopefully you get better soon.â You said.
Your father smiled as he served you some tea before the both of you began to eat the food. The both of you did not notice a dark silhouette watching you every move before disappearing.
Later that night after finishing getting ready for bed you couldnât help but feel a sense of dread and uneasiness as someone or something is watching you even if your curtains were closed.
You decided that maybe it was the stress that caused you to feel this way. And with that you blew out the candle and got into your cozy bed.
Tiredness and sleepiness began to consume you as the last thing you saw was your window balcony opening slowly before you fell asleep.
Hope you guys enjoy this chapter of the story. Sorry if itâs slow as you can see Iâm still trying to figure how this story is going to work out.
If you guys have any questions or concerns for me, Iâm always happy to answer them for you guys. Please if you guys have some ideas or suggestions on how to introduce Dark Bi Han then I would be very much appreciated.
Please take care of yourself my lovely besties and Iâm here if you guys ever need anything.

Imagine you are Aemond and Helaenaâs daughter.
Warnings: none; fluff all the way; alternative universe where⊠uh, Rhaenyra and Aegon are actually married and there is no civil war.
***
âą Stage One: To Be a Toddler.
You are actually a merry child. One so vivid and full of joy, prompted to mischief. Unusually early, you like to go after your father. In one of these days, you are brought to Vhagar.
âAlways restless, my dear Y/Nâ, says he when lifting you up and holding you on his arms. Aemond smiles in his own way at you, his lingering good eye admiring your chubby faces and wondering how could he have made a child so pure. When you smile back, he melts down completely. âOne wonders why.â
âVhagarâ, you say lazily, still smiling.
Aemond chuckles quietly. He ruffles your long silver hair, lingering in his touch on your cheek and pinching it lightly.
âVhagar, really? You really liked that old hag, didnât you?â
The one eyed prince does not think there is a more adorable sound than when you burst into childish giggles.
âI love Vhagar. Daddy, sheâs so big and⊠andâŠâ, you grown, hating to forget the word youâve learned recently.
Seeing how much you aim to please him, Aemond is patient.
âItâs a word uncle Aegon taught me!â, you try to justify yourself.
Aemondâs smile is quickly wiped out of his face. He furrows his eyebrows.
âI beg your pardon?â
âYou need not to beg, papa. Youâve done nothing wrong.â
The prince chuckles, but you can tell heâs worried by the look on his face.
âCome now, what did dear uncle Aegon teach you, Y/N?â
âWeeeeellâŠâ
âY/NâŠâ
You know you should not test longer. Aemond really hopes there is nothing to be anxious about, though.
âHe said Vhagar is gross!â, you quickly put both of your chubby hands over your mouth and your eyes go wide. Thereâs a mix of amusement, mischief and concern altogether as you wait for some snap.
But Aemond is rarely snippy with you. The prince laughs quietly instead, his shoulders relaxing.
âIf she is gross, why do you like her?â
Suddenly the prince remembers Helaena, when she loved bugs and other⊠bugs at a young age. The memory makes him smile fondly.
âBecause she is legendaryâ, you explain as-a-matter-of-factly. âBesides, gross is not necessarily a bad thing. Can we fly now daddy? Pleeeeeease?â
Heâs starstruck by your precocious wit. As he agrees to do what you requested, he remembers nostalgically how you came to this world.
***
Helaena always followed Aemond when they were younglings. Somehow the taste for books and studies set the two of them even closer. Before Aemond lost an eye, he came to discover that his dear sister had visions of some kind.
âIt is a trait that comes from our ancestors. Magic comes with a priceâ, she told him then.
âWhat can I do to relief your burden, Helaena?â
It was when she touched his hand for the very first time. Aemond could recollect how right it felt when their fingers intertwined, hands awkwardly moulded. Sentiments that escaped the common scope looked obvious.
âYour friendship is sufficient, my dear Aem.â
But in due time it proved to be insufficient. Helaena was welcomed in Aemondâs chambers when she had nightmares. These consolations led to discoveries⊠which resulted in an early pregnancy.
Helaena was no more than six and ten summers; Aemond, five and ten, when you were conceived. Quickly, they married.
And just as quickly they moved to Summerhall.
***
When Aemond takes you to fly Vhagar, the one eyed prince notices youâve been quiet. He takes a quick look wondering if youâve fallen asleep, but heâs surprised by how attentive you are.
Y/N has inherited some of me, I see it now. Laena likes to say Y/N has her beauty, but my iron.
As he smiles at the recollection, Aemond asks you:
âWhat is my dear daughter thinking of?â
âI want to reclaim my dragon, daddy.â
Aemond sighs. Again, he is remembered of Helaenaâs vision.
It came actually two months after you were born. His wife was struggling to sleep and this was a sign she was disturbed by something.
âWhat is it, my love? What is troubling you?â
âI cannot be sure what it isâ, she sounded anguished as she took his hand and Aemond tried to remain calm. Helaena had to take her time when visions shook her. âY/N carries the spirit of our house. She will not be like any other. I cannot be sure what it is. But she must be let to follow her path and reclaim a dragon herself.â
âI assumed sheâd sleep with an eggâ, it was all Aemond could tell.
âNo.â
âYou make it sound bad.â
âI do not wish to make her a queen, Aemond. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.â
âA queen?â
But seeing Helaena would say nothing more, Aemond calmed his restlessness and held her close. He knew she needed him by her side, not any of his inquiries.
âWe will do the best we can do to raise our little princess. I promise you.â
She looked up at him and smiled.
âI love you, Aemond Targaryen. I could have not chosen a better man to be the father of my children.â
And that was also the day she conceived their second child, a boy nine moons later born, named Maegor.
Back to the moment, Aemond clears his throat and says:
âAll in due time, daughter. You must bear patience. Methinks Vhagar would be jealous if she knew you want a dragon for yourself.â
Itâs enough to take your mind off the matter. And as if to confirm Aemondâs remark, the old dragon turns her head and gives you a look. You swear she buffed too.
âOh no, Vhagar! Donât be jealous! I love you and youâll always be my favourite!â
That strangely seemed to calm the old hag and Aemond looks pleased it all ended well.
*
Helaena is welcoming her sister Rhaenyra and her family when she spots you running around the castle with six year old Jacaerys. The oldest son of Aegon and his wife is the heir to King Viserysâs throne after Aegonâs own rise to the throne. He is a handsome and very smart young man who seems to have taken a like of you.
âYou stare at themâ, muses Aemond, who silently puts himself beside his wife. He knows when these visions come and go. But not only that, he is acutely aware how welcoming the whole family partyâwhich will soon be joined by the king and the queenâcan be too much for her. âIs there something I should worry about?â
âNoâ, Helaena gives Aemond a small, but confident smile. She touches his arm discreetly, not too firm nor too weak. Itâs a good vision, he understands. âHe will make her happy.â
Aemond doesnât like the idea of seeing you married too soon. Noticing this, she chuckles.
âMy husband, you do not expect me to believe that Y/N is going to be a toddler for all her life, do you?â
He sighs, but does not answer. His good eye holds back a shadow of sadness as he sees you running after the curly haired Jacaerys.
***
âą Stage Two: To Be A Child.
You have just recently celebrated your ninth name day. Aemond is keeping an eye on you as you are at the beach with a small group of friends, all of whom are your cousins: Jacaerys, Lucerys, Visenya and Baela. They are all talking about dragons.
A topic that, Aemond knows, can be somewhat sensitive to youâand this gives him some shivers. He remembers how his own cousins, Rhaegar and Baelor, sons of Lord Daemon and Lady Laena, mocked him because he didnât reclaim any dragon. It costed him an eye. And he prayed nothing the same would occur to you.
Aemond is trying not to look very anxious when itâs Helaena who comes for his aid. She had excused from her sisterâs adorable company to join her husbandâs abrupt exile under the excuse of watching over the children.
But she knows what really troubles him.
âShe is not like you. And they are not like them.â
Aemond limits to side eye at his wife.
âIs sheâŠ?â
âNo.â
âBut thenâŠâ
Helaena sighs.
âShe is your daughter, she has some stubborn traits that you are to blame forâ, she smiles. âGive them a chance. They are the next generation.â
âYou let her too looseâ.
âAnd you hold her too tight. This is not the way. Believe me, my dear. She will be fine.â
*
A third child came and suddenly your family is one of three. After Maekar, a boy named Jaehaerys has joined Summerhall.
âYou must give me a companion, mamaâ, you pout. Today you are having an embroidery lesson with her. âIt is not very fair when Maegor has a companion and I donât.â
Helaena gives you a loving glance.
âOur family is growing big indeed.â And then she looks fondly at your father.
When you follow her gaze, you smile to yourself. You do sigh over at how devoted Helaena and Aemond are to each other.
This afternoon, Aemond is spending some time with his boys. Maegor being the oldest is trying to show off his best traits to his father, who doesnât hesitate in appreciating his efforts.
Since it is raining outside, the family gathering is occurring just as fine until Maegor comes to tease you.
âDid you know, dear sister, that my dragon egg has hatched?â
Aemond is rocking baby Jaehaerys when he notices Maegor is not around.
âWhat about it?â, you pretend to find sewing interesting.
âItâs beautiful, really. It has blue scales.â And then the inevitable happens. âSoon it will grow and Iâll fly with it next to Vhagar. Youâll be left behind and no one will remember you.â
âSHUT UP, YOU STUPID FOOL!â
And to a general surprise, you stand up and slap his face hard. Aemond quickly comes at you, partially shockedâand secretly amused, since heâs been watching the scene from afarâbut you escape everyoneâs possible snort in tears.
âMaegorâ, Helaena sighs as she tends her crying boy. âYou shouldnât have teased your sister.â
Aemond and his wife exchange looks. Itâs very fitting that he, after reluctantly giving away his baby to a maid, goes to you.
Unsurprisingly, you are found pacing towards the yard. But something stops you from going out, despite the riot that so violently came upon your chest: it is the sound of those steps you are so familiar with.
âNow now dear Y/Nickname. What has come to fall upon my little princess?â
You run to your father, who is on his knees expecting you to do so. Whenever you felt distressed by something, this was how he welcomed you. Indeed it is a safe haven for you and Aemond knows it.
He sees so much in you and part of him blames himself for sharing this old wound with you.
This shouldnât be it, Y/N. Youâll never know how I lament this to be it.
âSing me that song, please.â
Aemond smiles at you. Itâs a secret he shares with you. Whilst indeed Daeron is the one more apt to this function, once upon a time Aemond discovered that, thanks to you, singing old poems calmed your fears.
Whatever it takes to make my princess safe.
Choosing a song named Ode to Visenya, here father and daughter forget that time is passing and with it, all that childhood means⊠at the same time that he proves to be a better father than his own ever were where his infancy was concerned.
After a moment, you two are outdoors, at the yard, watching rain fall.
âYou shouldnât have slapped your brother, Y/N.â
You swear Aemond is smiling, but you donât take your chances to bet on it.
âI cannot say I regret standing up for me. If I do not do so, then who will?â
So much like her father. Aemond looks at you, a hint of pride in his good eye making you smile and lean against him.
âRegardless, child. You are a princess, you must know when it is time to wage wars.â
âDoes this mean I can be taught sword lessons when I grow up?â
Aemond looks at you for a moment. He should ask his wife first, but how can he deny you anything? His first child, his only daughter.
âWill you behave?â
âYes, I promise! I promise I shall not slap the thwartâŠâ
âHeâs still your brother, Y/Nâ, Aemond scowls at you.
âSorry. But I promise, yes.â
âThen I will teach you myself.â
Aemond swears heâs never seen such a bright face before. The light in your eyes almost makes this iron prince get to tears.
âI love you, daddy.â You say as you hug him tight.
âŠ.
âI love you too, my dear girl.â
*
âI shouldnât be surprised that you are coming to tell me you are teaching our only girl to practice with swordâ, says Helaena in such a casual tone that Aemond believes there should be an accusation where in truth there is none.
âAnd are you?â
With the children asleep, the two are settling their own nest. Aemond is thankful for this moment, where privacy is finally unbroken.
âShe is a princess, Aemondâ, Helaena gives her husband an amused glance, as if she knows things he doesnât. âMother would be horrified if she knew.â
âThankfully, she is too occupied with her business in Kingâs Landing to be meddling in how we raise our childrenâ, says Aemond, still somewhat resented that his mother is as absent now as she was before.
Helaena comes by his side and gently touches his face, making him look at her. As she does so, the princess removes his eyepatch and leans to kiss his forehead.
âShe loves us in her own wayâ, then she melts in his embrace.
Aemond presses a kiss over her forehead, holding her tight. They stay like this for a while until the prince asks:
âWhat will be of our dear Y/N?â
Helaena looks up at him with amusement glinting in her lilac gaze. She smiles when she points it out:
âY/N is really your favourite, isnât she? Please be careful about it, or our sons will be jealous. Well, her future is not something that will get us preoccupied.â
That night, Aemond Targaryen slept a lot better.
*
You are visiting your aunt Rhaenyra and your uncle at Dragonstone again when you are told that there is a red dragon located at the dragonâs pit.
âReally?â, you ask Jacaerys. âHowâd you know?â
âFather says that the old dragons like it there better. Itâs like home for them, which makes sense considering their history.â
âHumâ, you say.
âYouâre not considering going there, are you? No one has tamed Vermithor for decades since King Jaehaerys diedâ, Jacaerys gives you a concerned look.
But you do not give away your bold side just yet. You smile and dismiss his concerns by assuring him that you wonât do such a thing. In the meantime you two are speaking, here we follow to the adults conversation.
Sitting in the higher table are Rhaenyra and her husband, as well as Aemond and Helaena. They are expecting to welcome King Viserys and Queen Helaena with their youngest son Daeron in the next day.
âI have news to shareâ, says a mischievous Rhaenyra after a while.
âIâve noticed you havenât drank your wine, dear sisterâ, Helaena giggles quietly. âOne wonders why.â
âGood Godsâ, Aemond raises his eyebrows at Aegon. âWho knew this would come too far?â
âYou ruined the news like always, Aemondâ, says Aegon, amused. âBut in truth.. aye, few would say an arranging as this would blossom to something good and provide to be a right decision.â
âTalk about it. How many children came of it?â, Aemond could not help himself, chuckling as he is elbowed by his wife.
âAemondâ, she snaps at him. âDonât be mean.â
âHardly mean, sisterâ, interferes Rhaenyra amused. âThe children are good. And speaking of themâŠâ
âJacaerys is very fond of Y/Nâ, muses Aegon. âWeâd think he and Visenya were pairing well, but Visenya prefers Lucerys whilst Baela has rather been good friends with Maegor.â
Aemond notices how Helaena suddenly appears more pompous. This time heâs the one who quietens. Marriage is not his expertise field and as he notices the group of children playing, he cannot foresee them married. Or maybe heâs just being protective.
Indeed as it seems, Maegor and Baela are getting along just fine: the former reads and the latter listens. A sight that actually leaves a good impression on Aemond, who had his own doubts about Maegorâs interest in studies.
He keeps an eye at the maid whoâs holding baby Jaehaerys before noticing you, Visenya, Jacaerys and Lucerys discussing⊠dragons. Again. This time Aemond narrows his eyes, waiting for some strange burst or abrupt humor swift. He side smirks to himself at your composed self, but in fact the prince detects some familiar determination that honestlyâŠ. He isnât sure if he wants to find out the reason behind it.
âAemondâ, Helaena summons him impatiently. âThe children are doing good, thank you. May you be more considerate in this matter? What do you think?â
Murmuring an apology, Aemond doesnât shy away of what heâs asked of. But Helaena knows the difficulty in doing so. However, the princess is certain that a merry path is underway. All they must do now is sow the seeds.
In the meantime their future is planned, you are found playing with your cousins.
âI have a dream of flying with Silverwing to Winterfellâ, says Jaehaerys. âMuch like our forefathers did.â
âYouâve claimed Silverwing?â, you cannot help admiring. âHow bold!â
âI was not allowed to mount Vermithor for a strange reason. But alas Silverwing is such a good girlâ, Jaehaerys smiles warmly.
âSilverwing was matched to Vermithorâ, Visenya meddled, somewhat maliciously.
You cast her cousin a long gaze, but opt to remain quiet. Seeing you donât buy the bait, or at least it is what Visenya assumes, topics are changed. But little they know what you are to do this evening.
*
âY/N looks restlessâ, Aemond muses as he lies next to Helaena.
The princess is mute for a moment. She turns to face her husband.
âIt is her moment, Aemond.â
âShe is claiming her dragonâ, but the prince doesnât take it well. Itâs up to Helaena to tell him what she has seen your future so far.
âLook, there is something you must know about Y/NâŠâ
*
You walk barefoot the moment your feet reach the sand. Under moonlight you opt to trace your steps to Vermithor cave through an unknownâor rather an unusualâpath that few are familiar with.
Itâs risky. You know. Part of you wonders if this is right, but if Jacaerys has claimed Silverwing⊠You blush. Pairing the dragons together has only been done once and it was done so by your great-grandparents Jaehaerys I & Alysanne.
But you want to prove your parents that you are not delicate as they see you. In the end⊠you want to be seen as bold as your cousins, as Targaryen as any of them.
Here you are. Holding a torch to light your way, you enter unprotected through it. The great red-ish winged being opens its eyes and stares at you, distrusted.
A loud groan echoes through the cave, and the sound may as well be mistaken to an earthquake. But you do not quake in fear, despite looking paralyzed as the large old dragon comes at you as if you are ready to be burnt.
Itâs when death comes so close that you lift your chin and tell Vermithor:
âI am my fatherâs daughter and I will claim you, Vermithor.â
The dragon spits fire as if to defy you. You escape barely of losing your life, but you proceedâeven if your body shakes and your conscience questions your audacity.
âLIKYRI, VERMITHOR! DOHAERAS!â
A little girl. Nine moons and counting. Giving such a command to a dragon almost as old as time. It could end very bad.
But it does not. Vermithor doesnât spit fire. It bows towards you.
And you smile proudly.
âLike my father. We are in this together, Vermithor.â
As poets later say, like father like daughter.
And this is not the ending, it is just the beginning.

Well Met By Moonlight Part 4
I'm back with our boys, I just couldn't leaving the poor people reading Royal Pain hanging like that. I'm an author, not a monster. So it's a little longer a chapter to make up for the wait.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
We get hints of plot and backstory. Enjoy!
***
The sky was starting to lighten and Steve groaned.
âMake time stop,â he murmured into Eddieâs neck.
Eddie chuckled. âSorry, princess, but you promised Lucas that you would be back at dawn.â
Steve grumped, but crawled off his boyfriend and stretched. âWho would have thought vampires have better stamina then werewolves.â
Eddieâs answering grin was positively feral.
âWhoâs to say I wasnât like that before I got turned?â He winked at Steve as he pulled on his clothes.
Steve laughed. âIâll guess Iâll never know.â
Eddie straightened up and looked at him curiously. âWhat do you mean?â
Steve shrugged. âA couple things, really. Like I donât know what you were like before you changed and I wonât know if itâs just you or all vampires that are that good, because I donât intend to sleep with anyone else. Ever.â
Eddie finished putting on his clothes and put his arms around Steveâs waist from behind. âYou are very romantic for someone who comes from a race that is infamous for fucking everything willing.â
Steve huffed out a laugh. âEveryone says Iâm too romantic for my own good, for the packâs good.â
Eddie kissed Steveâs throat without so much as the hint of teeth. âToo bad, baby, because I am into that shit.â
Steve moaned. âIf you keep that up, I wonât make it back to the compound in time.â
Eddie chuckled again, his warm breath huffing against the skin of Steveâs neck. He let go of Steveâs waist. âGo on, sweet cheeks,â he teased. âIâve got to report back to my uncle before the sun fully comes up.â
Steve nodded and waited until Eddie was in the sky before he transformed.
*
Steve made it to the pack compound before the first true ray of dawn even peeked over the horizon.
Lucas huffed out a wolfy laugh. âCutting it little close, arenât we?â
Steve shrugged. âWhat can I say? Iâm horny teenager that hasnât gotten laid in over a year. So sue me.â
Lucas rolled on the ground laughing. âCome on, itâs time for Murray to do guard duty.â
Steve nodded. âCan you have Erica and Holly play nearby while he does his watch?â
Lucas sat up and nodded. âStill donât trust him?â
Steve shook his head. The alpha watched as the scrawny wolf that was Murrayâs alter came oozing out of the woods. He bowed his head to Steve and kept it down as the alpha and younger teen passed him.
As the two wolves went further into the forest that surrounded their home, they could feel the gaze of the older wolf on them.
*
Eddie made it back to the trailer park well before the sky lightened enough to hurt him. He smiled at the structure that had been his home since he was young. It didnât look like it held the most dangerous and powerful vampire in Indiana. But looks were deceiving for both the man and his home.
Wayne had been turned in Kentucky around the beginning of the 18th century. When he sided against the Southâs right to own people, he was chased out of his home into Indiana, only barely a couple decades into statehood.
There with the help of Dr Martin Brenner, the coven Dominus and Clarence Harrington, the alpha, Steveâs great, great, great grandfather (werewolves live longer, so not as many generations between Steve and his ancestor as there was between Eddie and his) and the reason itâs called the Harrington Pack, founded Hawkins as a safe haven for the supernatural and humans alike.
Wayne looked rough, because he was born rough. The oldest son of a farmer. He had six siblings but of those six, only two lived to adulthood. Abigail, and the youngest, Lawrence. When he was attacked, he fought back, getting the vampireâs blood in his teeth, accidentally starting the turning process.
He learned how to hunt and be a vampire all his own, breaking all the stereotypes of a turned vampire being feral.
Because of his rough looks it made people underestimate him, so he dug into that hard. He moved with the poor and disenfranchised wherever the people in power put them. He finally settled in Forest Hills. His trailer looked as rough as the man himself.
But it was built like fortress. Not a single ray of light pierced its metal hide and the windows were mainly for show. It was a tough old thing, too. Eddie had heard stories of tornadoes ripping through the area only to be the only thing left standing.
Eddie wasnât sure what it was made of, but it was home. He slipped into the trailer like a shadow to find his uncle waiting for him.
âCutting it pretty fine, arenât you, boy?â Wayne asked from his comfortable arm chair.
Eddie grinned. âYou know me, I like to push the boundaries as far as I can.â
Wayne scoffed. âAnd one day itâs going to get you killed.â
They stared at each other for a moment before Wayne got to his feet and gave Eddie a hug.
âIâm glad youâre home, Ed,â he murmured. âI worried that Hopper had finally crossed a line he couldnât come back from.â
Eddie nodded, âIt was a near thing, Uncle Wayne, but Steve had finally healed enough to use his alpha voice and force submission.â
âI worry that he had to use it all,â Wayne said.
âYeah, well,â Eddie said cocking his head to the side, âat least Operation Vamp Out was a success. So thereâs that at least.â
Wayne pulled back, putting Eddie at arms length to see him properly. âYou got the alpha to do what exactly? Because this shitâs important, Ed.â
Eddie ran his tongue over his teeth thoughtfully, âIâm not sure I feel comfortable telling you about that, if Iâm honest.â
Wayneâs eyebrows went up and his eyelids fluttered to a close. âYou fucked him, didnât you? You fucked the alpha of the Harrington pack.â He opened his eyes.
Eddie pursed his lips to try and hide his smile, but the sparkle in his eyes betrayed him.
âHop was against it until I said you were my maker,â Eddie hedged.
âYeah, because that meant he wouldnât have to fight off Bill Hargrove for the pleasure.â
Eddie frowned. âSâthat because the Dominus is a racist piece of shit who is absolutely grinding his fangs to powder because his half-sister is dating a werewolf?â
Wayne chuckled. âThe very like.â
âHeâs also very scared of you,â Eddie said moving to sit on the sofa, âHop I mean.â
Wayneâs grin was vicious in its unfurling. âThatâs because Hop knows what Iâd do to him if he toed out of line.â
âIâve always wondered why you didnât do anything about him when he drunk off his ass most of the time.â
Wayne knelt in front Eddie and took his hands gently. âBecause around the time Sara died, you came into my life. You were already a frightened little boy who was thrown into my care, not know what kind of vampire I was. Would you have warmed up to me as well as you did if I had torn Jim Hopper to shreds?â
Eddie blinked up at him, his mouth wide with shock. âNo.â
âThere, you have your answer,â Wayne said softly. âI couldnât deal with a wayward alpha when I had a sweet boy to look after.â
He moved to sit next to Eddie on the sofa and bumped him with his shoulder. âI canât be everywhere and Iâve learned that I canât throw my weight around like I used to. Iâm actually worried that Iâm losing control of the town.â
âIs this about Jason and the other boys?â Eddie asked.
Wayne nodded. âIt never should have gotten as far as it did. Let alone to the attempted murder of the packâs alpha. And Sheriff Powell has been fractious to put it mildly.â
Eddie pursed his lips and then licked them slowly. âIt would be better if Hopper was police chief again.â
Wayne nodded again. âPowell as sheriff is bad for the town. Iâll talk to Mayor Roberts and see if we canât at least get him suspended for not taking a threat to the Harrington Pack alpha seriously.â
âHave Steve and Billy with you,â Eddie suggested. âEspecially Steve. Because at least he can show the mayor the scars that the silver made.â
âThatâs a good idea, Ed,â Wayne said. âIâll get right on that.â He bumped Eddieâs shoulder again. âYouâve got a good head on you. Maybe in a few years, Iâll have you take over as leader here.â
Eddie blushed and ducked his head. âOnly if that means youâre still around. I donât want to lose you.â
Wayne pulled him close. âI wonât leave you. Not if itâs in my power.â
Eddie wrapped his arms around him and buried his head into his neck like he did that first night all those years ago. âI love you.â
Wayne kissed the top of his head. âI love you, too, boy.â
*
Mayor Roberts was pissed. He had especially placed Danny Powell as sheriff when the whole town thought Jim Hopper was dead. But the man had placed him between a rock and two vampires and a werewolf alpha all chomping on the bit for justice.
Justice that was rightly deserved. Hunters were like vigilantes. Outside the law, but respected by those who thought them necessary. Hunters that were very much barred from the town of Hawkins for a reason.
To be honest he was a little surprised it took five days for the three men in question to darken his door.
Wayne Munson walked in flanked by the teen leaders of the coven and pack. Billy Hargrove stood on the elder vampireâs right, while Steve Harrington stood on Wayneâs left.
The young werewolf looked more than a little worse for wear, he winced when he moved into the room, favoring his left leg. The leg Roberts was told had not only been shot with a silver bullet but caught in a silver foot trap.
It was inhumane what those boys did to Steve, but it was thing to hear about it and it was quite another to see its effects.
âHello, gentlemen,â Roberts greeted solemnly. âIâm sorry we have to meet like this under these circumstances. Please have a seat.â
Harrington looked like he wanted to but when Munson and Hargrove didnât he couldnât without looking weak in front everyone. Something the alpha could not do.
He shifted his weight to his foot, straightening his spine so it looked as though he was standing on both legs equally.
Hargrove caught the movement and smirked. Munson ignored them both.
âWeâve come to see what is being done,â Munson said gravely.
âJason and Patrick are both eighteen and will be charged with the full extent of the law,â Roberts said. âAndy, Chase, and Josh are all underaged and itâs trickier. Josh and Chase are only sixteen, while Andy is seventeen.â
All three supernaturals winced.
âTry Andy as child,â Steve said, âand then force the younger two boys to do community service in both the pack and the coven. Six weeks with each sect.â
Wayne and Billy looked over at Steve in shock. Mayor Roberts raised an eyebrow.
âWhat is the basis for that assessment?â the mayor asked.
Steve properly straightened up and all the boy next door persona dropped away to reveal a very powerful alpha. âI was there. I could tell that the two pups were only along for what they thought was prank. They are young enough that if they see what being in coven is like, what being in a pack is like, I believe they can change.â He crossed his arms over his chest and looked down.
âAndy was a more willing participant,â he continued seriously, âbut perhaps one that could be persuaded that he was in the wrong. The other two knew full well of what they were doing and should be punished for it.â He looked up at Mayor Roberts, fire burning in his eyes.
Hargrove let out a long whistle. âGot some brains on you after all. I agree with alpha Harringtonâs assessment and terms.â
All three men looked to Munson who was considering it. He rubbed the stubble on his chin. âIt is sound judgment but I would like to add one thing, if I may?â
Mayor Roberts nodded. âGo on.â
âThat the justice for Steve concerning the fate of Jason and Patrick be placed in my hands,â he growled.
The other three men blanched.
âThey are still boys,â Mayor Roberts said, twisting a tissue in his hands nervously.
âI wonât kill them,â Munson promised. âBut itâs time again I showed this town why I am its master.â
The mayor gulped, but nodded. Munson lowered his head slightly and then back up, not quite a nod, but an acknowledgment nonetheless.
Munson turned on his heel and walked out, the alpha and Dominus close behind.

HI IM THE LANGUAGE ANON
I wanna say i rlly loved it and i have anogher rq...
The same, but whumper also forcibly americanizing whumpee, forcjjg them away from their culture and making fun of it and calling it gross. If you can ig??? I know it might be a bit hard
Sorry about the wait, another great idea. I think the most cultural things that I could think of was hair. Their are so many cultures that are connected with hair. I hope you enjoy.
Whumpee fought against the restraints keeping them to a chair.
The sound of scissors being snipped caused them to freeze.
Whumpee strained to see Whumper.
"No, no, please no", Whumpee pleaded once they saw Whumper grinning evilly at a pair of scissors.
"Relax, I'll let you grow it back. It's a mess and needs to be cleaned up. When was the last time you've brushed it?" Whumper came closer.
"The style isn't meant to be brushed. It... it's a protective hairstyle. A connection to my culture and ancestors", Whumpee fought against the restraints, "it's bad luck to cut it.... please."
"You worry too much. Your people have lied to you for so long about all of these ancestors and crap. No... you live in America, and you will look and act like a civil American."
Whumpee struggled as Whumper lifted some of their hair and lifted the scissors to it.
Whumpee shook their head, but Whumper held onto the hair and made the first cut.
"NNNNOOOO!!!!", Whumpee screamed as the clump fell to the floor.
"Look, you made me cut it uneven. I might have to shave you all the way now", Whumper sighed.
"No no no", Whumpee complained, "that's more than what you said. Please don't do this."
"We'll see", Whumper laughed.
Whumpee cried with every snip to their hair. They watched as every clump rolled off of them.
"Hmm not bad", Whumper finally set the scissors down.
"Ar-are you done?", Whumpee sniffled.
"Nope."
Whumpee's heart sank as they heard a lot of things being moved. Then the sound of an electric razor.
"No", Whumpee stomped their feet against the floor, causing the chair to almost tip.
"Good idea, tip the chair over", Whumper frowned, "you are making such a big deal out of nothing."
"My culture isn't nothing. It's mine, no matter how much you try, you can't take it from me", Whumpee glared, "and if that does somehow happen. My people will still exist."
Whumpee received a harsh slap to the face.
"Ymph", Whumpee grunted.
"Shut up", Whumpee growled, "or better yet, quote the pledge of allegiance."
Whumpee rolled their eyes, "I'd rather be quiet."
Another slap to the face.
"Ymmm", Whumpee groaned.
"Say it", Whumper warned.
Whumpee begrudgingly sighed, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States.....
Whumper dragged Whumpee down the hall and opened the door to the room Whumpee was locked in.
After Whumper handcuffed Whumpee to a bedframe, they placed a mirror in front of Whumpee.
"I don't want to see", Whumpee squeezed their eyes shut and lowered their head.
"You look so nice though", Whumper cupped Whumpee's face, "look", they lifted Whumpee's face and squeezed their cheeks.
Whumpee winced.
"Look before I take something else from you", Whumper warned.
Whumpee hurried to open their eyes.
They were greeted with their reflection.
"Smart choice. I was planning on taking a cheese grater to your ceremonial tattoos", Whumper chuckled, "maybe next time."
Whumpee glared somberly at their reflection.
"I can see you need some time to take this in. So enjoy staring at yourself for the rest of today."
Whumpee waited for the door to close before they started to sob. They stared angrily at their reflection. This wasn't their reflection... it couldn't be.
That night, Whumper received many nightmares. Some worse than others. The worst ended in a night terror. They were awake but were not able to move.
A person with the same hair as Whumpee had approached and jumped on the bed. They knelt over Whumper.
Whumper gulped at the closeness. The more Whumper could see the more terrified they became.
"Release them, or suffer the consequences", the figure warned.
With that, the figure disappeared, and Whumper was released from the paralysis.
The next morning Whumpee woke up and looked straight into the mirror.
"Not just a nightmare", Whumpee frowned.
Whumper came in.... pale as ghost, clearly lacking in sleep.
"Did you have a visitor last night", Whumpee smirked.
"Y-you know?", Whumper gasped.
"I had a visitor last night too. Mine was comforting though. I warned you it was bad luck to cut my hair. If you do not do as they warned, they will drive you mad with nightly visits. That is Mamma's way."
"Mamma?", Whumper stated with some sarcasm.
"An ancestorstral spirit", Whumpee grinned.
"Nonsense", Whumper frowned, "just stories to scare me."
Whumper soon learned though that the more things they did to Whumpee the more visits they received, and the less sleep they got.
They began keeping their distance from Whumpee, afraid to even touch them. The nightly visitor was becoming more threatening every night.
"Leave, get out of my home. To think I tried to civilize you and do you a favor. This is what I get in return", Whumper yelled, "get out."
"Even if I do leave, you'll still be haunted by them" Whumpee grinned as they rubbed their wrist, "you caused this to yourself. I did warn you. If you had let me leave sooner you wouldn't have suffered that fate. Now it's to late. Mama is going to get you."
Whumper pointed at the door, "get out. To think I tried to help you. You and your wicked people cursed me."
"Typical American. You put your hands where they don't belong, and they got burnt. Now it's everyone else's fault."
Whumpee turned to leave, "remember this, they will not leave you alone. This is your fault." Whumpee stepped out of the door cautiously.
Whumper lowered to the floor and shook. Every night had gotten worse. Every night, they felt like they may die. How long until they would actually die?
"All because of them", Whumper frowned.
Thankyou so much for the ask.

Oh my goddd how is it already Sunday?! Iâm leaving for a really big trip on Tuesday and so naturally my house is not ready for the dog-sitters to stay over, and I am not packed. No worries, Iâm sure Iâve got this covered đ
Thank you so much to everyone whoâs been tagging me! Thereâs so much good reading out there, and the art this week for Simonâs birthdayâIâm blown away by the talent in this fandom.
I havenât done as MUCH writing as I would likeâIâm at that stage in my life where I no longer handily remember huge swathes of my âinternalâ writing, so if I donât get it down right away or get called off to do something in the middle, itâs lost, and that has been my entire week, folks. I did get some done though! Hereâs a little bit from my COBB that I fully expect to get some blowback over, becauseâŠwell. Youâll see:
I bend down to admire some perfectly iced cinnamon buns, and above me hear someone chuckle. âYouâre a Pitch, arenât you?â
I glance up. And up. I rise to my full height andâŠIâm still looking up. Itâs not often that I find myself craning my neck to look someone in the face, but the cheerful-looking man behind the counter must stand 6â5â, at least. He has short dark hair, square-shaped glasses, and a curious glint in his deep brown eyes. Thereâs nothing unusual about him other than his height, and yet I find myself staring. After a moment, I realise heâd asked me a question. âI am,â I say, keeping my voice even.
He smiles, and something feels like itâs cracked inside me. âYeah, well, Iâm Adam,â Adam says, extending a floury paw. âAdam Price. Your ancestor relieved mine of a herd of goats 500 years ago.â
Long enough ago that a grudge isnât worth bearing, but then again, this is Watford. I ignore his hand. âIf your ancestor had paid mine her due, perhaps he wouldnât have been so wracked with guilt that he thoughtlessly left his pen open one night. Goats are wont to wandering.â
ââŠwont to wanderingâŠâ Adam repeats, tilting his head as his hand drops reluctantly back to his apron. He narrows his eyes. âYour family raises goats now, doesnât it?â
âTheyâre hardly 500 years old,â I scoff, then pause. âThe goats or my aunts.â
So yeah, thereâs that đ€Ł By the way, the art for this fic is SO gorgeousâmy partner has been absolutely amazing and I canât wait for everyone to see it when we post!
This snippet is from the one where Simon cleans up the room after blowing up Bazâs bed, and meanwhile has to sleep on the floor. For the first couple of days, anyway. Ahem:
âSnow.â Iâm standing in the middle of the room in my pyjamas, waving my arms. He drives me up a wall. âTake the bed. Youâre walking like youâre a hundred and three.â Iâve been spelling the floor soft for him every night after he goes to sleep, but it doesnât seem to have helped.
Simon is in his school-issued pyjama bottoms and a thin cotton t-shirt, standing mere inches in front of me on top of his blanket heap. He presses his lips together and shakes his head. The motion apparently triggers a crick in his neck, making him wince in pain. âThe bed is big enough for two,â he allows.
Absolutely not. âAbsolutely not,â I tell him firmly.
âIt is!â he objects, misunderstanding.
âSnow.â
âIf you donât want to share, then itâs all yours,â he says stubbornly, sticking his chin up at me. He always has to look up at me. âIs it because youâre a vampire? I wonât stake you,â he adds.
Crowley below. I canât think too much about that statement, but itâs the last straw. âSleep on the floor, then. The hard, cold, stone floor.â
And thatâs it! I may not be heard from for a couple of weeks, other than posting COBB should the schedule place us on early. I will be traipsing around Scotland, then Paris, and I think itâs going to be a pretty good time! I hope all of you have good things happening for you too. No pressure tags to:

Between the Black and Gray 3
First / Previous / Next
Ma-ren was busy.
Helena had called out so, they were down a server during the lunch rush. Ti'ka helped spread the load, so it wasn't insurmountable, but it was busier than she had been in a while. She had told Fen to stay home today just to give things another day to cool down so Ma-ren felt additional obligation to make some extra money.
A bell sounded, and an unseen hand from the kitchen slid out a plate of pancakes for that new human eating outside. Ma-ren grabbed her plate and the coffee pot and strode out.
"Here are your pancakes, sorry for the wait! Would you like another coffee?" She placed the plate in front of him and made sure he had napkins and syrup.
"I would love another cup, thanks so much." He grinned widely as she poured. "Hey, I'm sorry for staring earlier, you just look familiar."
"Oh it's all right. Maybe I just have that kind of face." Ma-ren flicked her tail and looked back towards the kitchen. "You're new here right? When did you arrive?"
He finished chewing the pancakes and swallowed. "Just came in a couple hours ago on a freighter. I'm going to see if I can find some work and earn enough for passage on to the next station."
"Oh? Where are you headed?" Ma-ren switched to Colonic smoothly. Then, she realized what she was doing, shook her head, and her ears twitched. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't pry. I apologize, you don't have to tell me your business."
He chuckled and waved his hand, dismissively. "I haven't had a chance to speak Colonic in years. It feels good, like dusting an old cabinet. "No, no it's fine. I guess I'm making my way to Lemilar."
"Well, good luck on your journey!"
"Thanks Ma-ren, I'll try." He looked down at his food and then back up. "Actually, Ma-ren, can you recommend a hostel around here? I need a place to stay for a week or two."
Ma-ren laughed. "Friend, there's no place like that for humans or K'laxi here."
The human looked around. "Yeah, I kind of got that impression from the welcome wagon down on the promenade."
"Oh? Did you meet Tam? How much did he shake you down for?"
"He tried for one hundred Stars, but he didn't get any."
Ma-ren blinked. "Wait, you beat up Tam?"
The human shook his head quickly. "No! I just dodged his half-assed punches until he got tired and left."
"Oh I wish I could have been there for that! Someone needs to take Tam down a peg or two. He goes after humans and K'laxi, and not just newbies on the promenade. He comes up here and causes trouble, and when security comes, they harass us." Ma-ren looks back at the kitchen. "Look, I have to get back to work, but anyone who can take on Tam and walk away deserves praise. I've got a couch, you can crash with Fen and I for a day or two while you figure things out."
He blinked. "Are you sure? That's awfully generous. You just met me, I don't even think you know my name."
"Hey, we take care of our own up here. Ancestors know nobody else will. There's no reason for you to sleep out in the common if you don't have to." She winked. "So, what's your name then, friend?"
He suck out his right hand. "I'm Gord. Pleased to meetcha."
Ma-ren leaned back. "What's the hand for?"
Gord looked at her, and then at his hand, and put it down slowly. "Don't worry about it. It's an old greeting."
Ma-ren's ears twitched again. "Well Gord, I'm on for another couple of hours and then I'll take you back to our place. I'll bring you the check for the pancakes, but I can keep the coffee going so the boss doesn't wonder why you're still here."
Gord finished his food and took out a battered pad and read while sipping three or four coffees while Ma-ren finished her shift. When she was finished, she walked out in her street clothes. "Ready Gord?"
Gord snapped the pad shut and picked up his pack. "Sure thing Ma-ren. Lead the way."
She took him to her apartment over on the other side of the floor. As they approached her building, they passed Da'reni sitting out front reading again, his gray muzzle buried in his pad. Ma-ren waved. "Hey Da'reni, I've got a boarder for a couple of days. New arrival."
Da'reni grunted and flicked his eyes up. He did a double take and stared. His ears flattened, and he looked like he was going to say something. Then, he fluffed his fur and grunted and went back to his pad. "Careful, newbie. You've got that kind of face. The one that gets security called up here."
Gord raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. Ma-ren's tail flicked. "Don't worry Gord, that's just how Da'reni is. Come on, you can come up and meet Fen and get settled.
Ma-ren bounded up the stairs while Gord walked more carefully. When she got to the apartment door, she touched the locking stud and the door buzzed and opened with a loud click. "Fen hon, I'm back and I bought a friiiiiiiiend!"
There was bustling from the kitchen area. "Oh, who is it? Did you drag Helena back again?"
Ma-ren laughed. "Nah, newbie off a freighter. Get this, he managed to dodge getting beat up by Tam!"
Fen leaned around the corner, face covered in flour and a towel draped across her shoulder. "Okay, you win. Hey newbie, I'm Fen."
He waved. "Gord."
"Sit Gord, you drink tea? Too bad, I'm making some. I'll have cookies out in an hour."
Gord, Fen and Ma-ren sat around their small table, drinking tea while Gord brought Fen up to speed and telling them about dodging Tam.
"Shit Gord, I know how hard Tam can hit-" Fen rubbed her cheek "-first hand, and the fact that you dodged him is nothing short of impressive."
"Oh, it wasn't so much, but thanks all the same. He really telegraphs his moves, and I know that a Gren really only has three or four punches in them." Gord sipped his tea politely.
Gord put his cup down. "So Fen, Ma-ren how long have you been here? Sure seems like they are trying to get all the humans and k'laxi to move along."
Fen and Ma-ren shared a look and then laughed. "Oh Gord, we were born and raised here. Most of the time, the station authorities ignore us. Our parents came in on Spyglass and these days it's not going anywhere so we just... stayed."
Gord blinked. "Wait, Spyglass? The Starjumper? She's here? Where?"
Fen raised an eyebrow. "Docking bays thirty three through forty. We have a big fundraiser every year to pay the docking fees. We probably should just scrap it, but we can't bring ourselves to do it. It saved all of us."
Gord looked at them in horror. "Scrap her? No, you can't do that! Have you even asked her what she thinks of that?"
Ma-ren looked at Gord carefully. "Her? Gord, Spyglass is a ship. A creaky, old, cold, human made ship. It's probably the oldest thing on this station by a long shot. It's not alive."
Gord boggled. He shut his mouth and took a deep breath in, and then out again though his nose. He picked up his tea and Ma-ren noticed his hand was shaking. "Gord? What are you not telling us?"
At that, Gord smiled. "Quite a lot, actually. But that's neither here nor there." He sipped his tea, took another cleansing breath and seemed to collect himself. "Can we go over to Spyglass? Can we go in her?"
Fen shrugged. "I mean, it-she's cold. The reactors failed decades ago, but she's not like, guarded. We used to play there as kids."
"Will you take me there? It's important. I need to see something." For the first time since they met, Ma-ren noticed that Gord was nervous.
"S-sure Gord. We can head over." Fen looked up at the clock over the stove. "Curfew isn't for a few cycles, let's go now."

Relatively Speaking, This Will Probably Be Fine (7/?)
Fandom: Girl Genius Rating: T Summary: Everyone knows Agatha Sannikova can't be a Heterodyne, even if she did arrive mysteriously one night to live with Lady Teodora and Lord Saturnus. She's got those headaches, and she's not too bright - she's not even a Spark! She does get along quite well with Lord Saturnus, which is a bit odd, but she's had a very good affect on his health. Lady Teodora doesn't like the kind of, er, "life lessons" he's tried to teach her, but Agatha hasn't set anyone on fire or unleashed any terrifying monstrosities on the town.
...what do you mean, tempting fate?
<Last Chapter | Chapter One | Next Chapter > AO3 Link
While Saturnus had made tremendous progress in the last monthâand he would long treasure the look on Dr Sunâs face when heâd walked into the room of a dying man and had the corpse sit up and say helloâhis body was not fully recovered and he still spent most of his time sleeping. But it was reparative sleep, that of a working mind, not the darkness of respite and the taunting death just beyond reach. Not anymore.
If you had asked Saturnus to name the force that could bring him back from the brink of deathâthat could make him want to return from the brinkâit would take him a good thousand years before he ever guessed something so trite as the power of love.
And the source of that power, blazing like an invisible sun, stretched out on the rug, lying on her stomach, her legs kicked up behind her as she wrote industriously in her school workbook. He could not help but smile. If there was any part of Saturnus that had worried she might not enjoy being around him now that there was a him to be around, it had died quickly. Agatha spent more time with him than everâbut not always conversing. She would read or work or quietly fiddle with her clocks while he slept or did his own reading.
I enjoy his company, sheâd told Teodora.
Saturnus knew she understood sheâd had a hand in his recovery, but he wondered if she knew how much of a hand. He wondered if he'd ever have the words to tell her.
âWhat year was Bludtharst and Andronicusâ first battle?â Agatha asked, distracting him from his thoughts.
âI wonât tell you,â Saturnus said, not opening his eyes.
âHeâs your ancestor, how can you not know?â
âDidnât say canât. Said wonât.â He cracked an eyelid open. âYou wonât learn if I help you cheat on your homework.â
Agatha stuck her tongue out at him, and he chuckled.
âI canât wait for us to be done learning about Andronicus. Itâs so annoying. Everyone talks about him like heâs so wonderful, but I think he sounds like an idiot. Whatâs so great about a person that neglects their duties and lets everything fall apart just because their fiance goes missing? I wouldnât do that, and I certainly wouldnât want to marry anyone who would.â
âAttagirl,â Saturnus said, earning a puzzled look from Agatha. âRoyalty rarely sees their people as people, just resources. Heterodynes know better. Itâs what makes us good masters.â
âThe Heterodynes killed plenty of their own people, and not always by accident.â
Saturnus waved a dismissive hand. Always fussy with the details, this one.
âOh, sure, an individual or five, but we never watched our people starve after a bad harvest and called it Godâs will. If we sent our soldiers into a meat grinder, you can be damn sure we were in there with them.â
Oh, but he did miss those days, when he had that fire in his blood. What he wouldnât do for one last rideâŠ
Suddenly Saturnus caught her eyes, speaking with a severity that startled her.
âLoyaltyâtrue loyaltyâis earned. You donât demand it. You donât build it in. You certainly donât force it. The Heterodynes have always understood that, and that, my dear, is why we have ruled for thirty-five generations while these upstart Sparks barely manage two.â
He sighed.
âThat Teuful had promise, though. Such a shame.â
Agatha sat up, tucking her legs beneath her.
âWhy do you tell me this stuff that way?â
âI shall need at least one specific noun in that sentence.â
âSometimes you tell me about what the Heterodynes are responsible for or what they shouldnât do or what you think a proper ruler is supposed to be like. I think itâs interesting, but you always say it like I'm going to use it. You know Iâm not a Heterodyne.â
I know you are my granddaughter, the Lady of Mechanicsburg, and if I canât make you a proper Heterodyne at least I can try and get you to be better at it than your father.
The reflex came and went, as it always did. It had nearly given him another heart attack, the day sheâd looked up from her book and he finally recognized his own eyes staring out at him from a girl who called him Lord Saturnus.
Fortunately, by the time heâd regained the ability to tell her, heâd realized why he shouldnâtânot that it galled him any less to keep secrets from his flesh and blood.
âMaybe so,â he said. âBut these things are important. Better to know it and not need it, than need it and not know it.âÂ
Agatha snorted, derisively.
âUndignified,â Saturnus chided. âListen, if nothing else, knowing what a good leader does will let you spot a bad one.â He nodded to her book. âHow else would you be able to see him for the prat he was?â
âI guess,â Agatha said. âItâs still boring.â
âThatâs just because youâre not learning the interesting parts. Our parts.â
Agatha had to agree with that. Â
âNone of them ever seem to mention what was going on inside Mechanicsburg.â
âWell, we were never particularly welcoming to outsiders wandering in and asking about what we were up to."
Depending on your definition of welcoming, anyway. A man appreciated a test subject who walked in of their own accord.
"These historians have only had access for a couple of decades, and now they need to dig through our recordsâand most of those were in the castle.â
âDonât the JĂ€germonsters live a really long time? Why donât the historians just ask them?â
Saturnus laughed so hard he started to cough and Agatha had to fetch him a glass of water from the pitcher on the bedside table. He pushed himself up into a sitting position, and Agatha helped adjust the pillows.
âA historian interviewing the JĂ€gerkin,â Saturnus said, still wheezing, wiping tears from his eyes. âRed fire, I would pay to watch that.â
âWhatâs so funny about it?â Agatha asked.
âOh, come on, youâve metââ He stopped. His smile faded. âNo, I suppose you probably havenât. Unless you ever ran across them while you were out with your uncle?â
It was a weak and unlikely hope, but he was disappointed all the same when Agatha shook her head.
âNo. Uncle Barry and I always hid if any Wulfenbach soldiers came into town. I think I saw one once, but I was too far away to get a good look.â
âAlright, then Iâll tell you this: one does not become a JĂ€ger by possessing an abundance of mental acuity.â
âThey canât all be stupid.â
âOh, theyâre more clever than they let on, Iâll grant you, and the ones that survive to be generals are very smart, but on the whole...let us say it is not so much a lack of brains as an inability to put said brains to use." His voice was fond.
Ve couldnât get the arrow out, so ve tought maybe ve could use anodder arrow to get it loose, und dot vun got stuck, so ve tried to get dot vun out vitâ
Agatha resumed her seat on the floor. Â
âYou like them a lot.âÂ
âOf course I do! They were my JĂ€gers! Every Heterodyne loves their JÓgers.â He scowled and added in a mutter. âEvery proper Heterodyne.â
âThereâs a boy in one of the upper classes who says his great-great-grandfather is one,â Agatha said. Saturnus was fully aware she was changing the subject deliberately, but allowed it. Â
âOne of Ognianâs brood, no doubt.â
âYou know him?â
âI know of the family. I donât know Ognian personallyâthereâs far too many JĂ€gers to know them all so wellâbut I donât need to. There are horse breeders who pay less attention to bloodlines. Heâs got scrapbooks.â
The sight of which were enough to send even the generals scampering for safety.
âWhat are they like? When I lived outside of Mechanicsburg, everyone was afraid of the JĂ€germonstersââ
Heâd missed it last time, but this time he heard it, with a sting of anger. Not for her, it wasnât her fault she didn't know, but the fact that she didn't know.
âJĂ€gerkin,â Saturnus corrected, firmly. âOr JĂ€gers. Only outsiders call them JĂ€germonsters. They are citizens of Mechanicsburg, the same as everyone else.â
âOh. Right.â
Saturnus leaned back against the pillow, lacing his fingers together over his stomach and staring at the ceiling.
âWhat are they likeâŠâ he repeated to himself. âWell, they are all individuals with their own personalities, but on the whole...fun.â
âFun?â
âOh yes.â Saturnus grinned. âBoisterous. Excitable. And unbelievably loyal. Imagine growing up surrounded by a few hundred people who think everything you do is the greatest thing anyone has ever done.â
âIt sounds nice,â Agatha said, in a wistful voice. The anger stirred in his guts againâshe should know, know it so deep in her bones she couldnât imagine not knowing.
But that wouldnât help, now, so he brushed it away and put on a playful scowl.
âAlright, little miss, I see what youâre doingâgetting me to distract you so you donât have to do your homework.â He shook a finger at her, and Agatha stifled a giggle. âGo on, back to work. History is just as important as science. You have to know where you came from and what happened before. It tells you why things are happening now, and how to avoid making the same mistakes. Like why we donât build time machines to go find out what we donât know.â
âI bet kids outside of Mechanicsburg never had to spend a whole week learning about Robur Heterodyne,â Agatha muttered.
âAnd theyâre the ones who get eaten by time monsters.â
Agatha flopped against the bed and groaned.
âCanât you tell me a story from when you were young? That counts as history, right?â
Saturnus sputtered.
âHistoryâhow old do you think I am?â
âA million years,â Agatha said, promptly.
âAlright, smart mouth, one more story, and then you get back to work.â
Nodding obediently, Agatha settled in, wide-eyed.
âLetâs seeâŠhow about the time I beat an army of mutant frogs, twice?â
âTwice?â
âTwice.â Â
Saturnus was going to get better, yes, and now he would fight tooth and nail to stay that way. No more wasting away, waiting for the final release of death. He would live to see his granddaughter take her rightful place in this world. Whether it be with a gentle touch or an iron fist, a Heterodyne would rule Mechanicsburg again.
And Saturnus would be there to make damn sure it happened.

Princess Alex
Just a little fluff fic for the boys :)
AO3
After the boys celebrate their engagement, Alex teases about if he's going to get the chance to be Princess Alex.
***
Three plus years after the leak, and four years after their first visit to Paris together, Alex finds himself curled up in Henryâs arms. Henry had arranged for them to spend spring break in Paris. Visiting the city, enjoying being happy and in love, and as of dinner tonight⊠engaged.Â
Naturally they had celebrated and now were cuddling together.Â
Alex is laying on his right side, curled into Henry, and smiling at his ring. Heâd gotten a similar band for Henry â although more catered to Henryâs taste just as Alexâs ring is catered to his own, heâd been planning to propose to Henry at the lake house that summer, but Henry beat him to the punch, and he wasnât going to wait months to see his ring on Henryâs finger.Â
âYou like it, love?â
Alex hums. âLove it. Really making history here, huh, baby?â
âAbsolutely. Iâm just imaging the chaos of a Royal Wedding with two men â one of which is from the country that succeeded from us 250 years ago, itâs definitely going to make history.â
Henry kisses his curls, and adds, âPlus, itâs going to make my ancestors roll in their graves and Iâm going to love that.â
Alex laughs. âCan you imagine your granâs reaction if she were still around?â
âThe only reason I was able to get permission to marry you is because my mother is Queen now.â
Of course, Alex knows this. Catherine has been Queen for more than a year and thatâs made everything far easier on them. Even if the long-drawn-out funeral situation had affected their relationship with Henry being required to do certain things in London for so long while Alex was stuck doing his second year of law school. He wanted to be there for Henry, but âofficial royal suitorâ is not enough to get much leeway for his schooling.Â
He was just glad that it fell in a way that he could join Henry for the summer in London as he took up some of his royal duties after the coronation of their new queen. Unlike with the former Queen, Catherine encouraged Henry to have Alex supporting him throughout those duties, which made both of them a lot happier and the press had started teasing about wondering when Alex would become Princess Alex, which Alex actually loved.
âSpeaking of my new queen, do you think sheâll officially make me a Princess?â Alex teases.Â
Henry bursts out laughing. âTypically speaking getting married warrants you the title of Duke or Duchess, not Prince or Princess, but I do think you could convince the public to call you Princess Alex, they already do anyway.â
âI suppose that I could settle for Duchess,â Alex grins. âBut why deny the public what they really want?â
âYouâre such a menace to society. Itâs not the public that started this whole Princess Alex thing and you know it,â Henry says, with a chuckle.Â
Heâs right, of course he is. Shortly after their forced outing and his mother winning the election, the crown and the white house wanted them to do an interview discussing things and answering a few questions.Â
âSo, Alex, now that we know a little about what Prince Henryâs plans are, why donât you tell us a little bit about your own?â the host of the interview asks.
âWell, given everything thatâs happened with the campaign and the election, I have to say my political aspirations have definitely changed, I definitely donât want to be a senator by the time Iâm thirty anymore, but that left me a little⊠floundering. I wasnât sure what I wanted to do.â
Here he decides to make a joke because he really doesnât want to talk about why heâs changing away from politics.Â
âSo, I considered my options. I briefly considered just being a princess now that I got Henry ââ
âYou would be a pretty princess, Alex,â Henry teases.
âAnd it even rolls off the tongue well, Princess Alex,â he teases.
âI do like the sound of it.â
There are cheers from the crowd that agree.
âBut,â Alex states, despite the grinning. âBut part of the reason Henry and I fell in love is because we both want to do good in the world. So, rather just be a princess, although it would be delightful, Iâve decided to go to law school. I want to help minorities and underprivileged people and make a difference.â
âThatâs great.â
Thereâs a bit of a lull and Alex knows the showâs about to end, so he says, âBesides, Henryâs mom got to be the first princess with a doctorate, so I could totally be the first princess with a law degree someday.â
He and Henry had burst out laughing, as had the crowd.
After that, the hashtag Princess Alex had gone wild on twitter and Instagram with everyone arguing that Alex would be an awesome Princess (helped by June and Beaâs comments that he would look oh so pretty in a dress and tiara â Pez and Nora had even done mockups of him in dresses and tiaras next to a mockup of Henry as Prince Charming â, and it was not at all hindered by Zahra or Philipâs annoyance by the tag). Ever since, the press had referred to Alex as âthe First Son (Princess Alex)â in the papers. Particularly when he was in an article with Henry.
It helped that any time Alex tweeted about him and Henry, he used the hashtag as well, and so had the others, who thought the idea was hilarious.
âIt doesnât matter who started what â it doesnât even matter that I was joking, what does matter is that the people have taken to it and me like I knew that they would, and they would thrilled to make me an official princess.â
Henry laughs. âHalf of me thinks you only said yes so that you could officially be a princess.â
âYouâre so right â I befriended you, let you kiss me and turn my world on its axis by making me realize Iâm bi, go through this whole thing where I was madly in love â couldnât get enough of that mouth and your dick â but really all along⊠it was ploy. I wanted to be âPrincess Alexâ and it was worth sucking your dick just to get that.â
Henry reaches behind him and grabs a pillow before hitting him with it. âYouâre such a demon.â
âYes, but Iâm your demon now,â Alex says, returning fire with the pillow. âNow and forever,â he says as he laces his left hand with Henryâs left hand, smiling at the way their bands shine together.Â
Henry grins. âEven if it was some ploy to become a Princess â Iâm okay with that, as long as youâre my princess.â
âYouâre such a sap,â Alex teases. Then he goes and kisses him anyway. âCan we make a post celebrating or do we have to wait for the press teams involved?â
âTechnically weâre supposed to let them announce it, but since when do we ever listen to them?â
Alex grins as he holds up their hands laced together and snaps of them with their rings â heâd do a picture of him and Henry kissing, but itâd be far too obvious what theyâve been up to tonight, so hands it is.Â
He adds the caption:
We said yes, hereâs to making history again. #theprinceandtheprincess #princessalex #princehenry #engaged #firstprince #history, huh?
He shows it to Henry, who smiles and nods, âPost it.â
The second he does, it breaks his records on his posts in minutes and knowing that they would rather celebrate than deal with wedding details already, he turns the phone off and says, âWell, baby, I think we can let the world marinate on us making history again, while I make use of the wonderful mouth of yours.â
Henry grins, âSounds like a plan, love.â
âGood.â

TLK: And i saw myself
Continuation of this Kiara needed to think. Rafiki's word still danced on her mind. Were The Lions of The Past really the reason she was with Kovu? Has she ever had a choice about her life? Could she even trust her own heart or it was just all a big plan? Will her cubs be part of it as well?
She couldn't face her family. Not with the knowledge she learned. So she went to the side of Priderock and let herself lost into the night sky...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I was waiting for you, my child."
The voice rumbled on her head, filling the black space Kiara had just woken into. But she wasn't afraid. The voice was...calm and soothing, like she had know it all her life.
"Because I had always been with you since the day you were born", replied the voice. Kiara pressed her ears to her head, trying to hide her thoughts from this presence. "Don't be afraid," the voice chuckled, "I can't hear your thoughts, you just had the same reaction I had when I entered this place for the first time. I am going to admit, it is quite scary. But come closer. I want to finally meet one of my grandcubs in person and not from the sky".
Grancubs? Could it be..?
"Mufasa?" Adjusting her eyes to the darkness, Kiara finally recognized the spirit in front of her.
The old king nodded. "But how? I thought only The Lion Guard-"
"Yes, usually, only The Lion Guard's leader can communicate with the ancestors. But once in a while, some animals are chosen to be more perceptive of The Lion of The Past's wishes and knowledge. And you, are one of them."
Kiara looked away from her granfather's spirit, remembering the conversatio from earlier. "I'm aware".
Mufasa frowned. Kiara tilted her head. "You didn't happen to overhear my conversation with Rafiki and how he told me you were the one who decided me and Kovu were together?"
The spirit of her grandfather blinked. And after a moment of silence, Mufasa did something she would have never expected the respected king to do: he threw his head back and groaned. Loudly.
"Great Kings, give me patience with that old mandrill." It was so, so unexpected, that Kiara couldn't help to laugh. Mufasa, realising he was caught in a moment, blushed (as much as a spirit could blush) but then laughed along his grandaughter.
"Ahem!" the lion composed himself. "Listen, Kiara. Rafiki said the truth that it was my plan to make you and Kovu be together, but it was you who gave me the idea."
"Come again?"
"I thought Simba was going to heal The Pridelands," continued the king, "but we- I didn't consider how much Scar had hurt my son. His heart was still healing and his soul was broken even more when your old brother Kopa died."
Kiara remembered the stories about an older brother she never got to meet.
"I wanted to intervene, to show Simba there was a way to unite the prides again. But he has built a shell around his heart. And you were born and he was raising you to hate the Outsiders too. I thought the war was going to last forever. But you...you weren't like your father. You were curious, you were open-minded...and you gave Kovu a chance." There was pride in Mufasa's words. "You, Kiara, saw beyond his exterior, beyond the prejudices you were raised into, defied your instincts, and decided to be friends with the enemy."
"It was all you, Kiara. You taughe me there was still a chance to make The Pridelands the way it was before Scar's reign. I only told Rafiki what your heart already showed to me, to us. The rest, was all you."
Her heart was beating quickly. Kiara couldn't believe what she was hearing. But her grandfather's words resonated not only in the void they were talking to but in her soul. Â "Never doubt on your decisions, my child." Reassured him. "You are what I was supposed to be, what I was supposed to do in my time as King. But I was naive and blinded to my brother's doing and what I was told to do. You didn't. You defied that. You were truth to yourself, as a Queen should do."
Something rumbled around them. And Kiara knew it was time.
"Grandfather...thank you." Kiara tried to bow but a warm paw stopped her. "No." And then Mufasa bowed to her. "Thank you."
And then Kiara opened her eyes. ----------------------------------------------------- Kovu was tired. He never thought fatherhood was going to be this hard. It was scary, but seeing his cubs sleeping between his paws, make it all worth it. If only he knew why was Kiara so bothered about-
*thud*
He felt someone resting on him. But he knew who it was. Looking back at his mate, he could glance a smile on Kiara's muzzle.
Everything was going to be ok...
