So I was thinking about how when Japanese media gets localized into English, there are different methods in how characters' names get translated. Sometimes they keep the Japanese name, sometimes they make an English-sounding equivalent, and sometimes they make up something new.

I, for one, prefer it when they keep the Japanese name, because I think it keeps the integrity of the original and I believe we could all stand to be more used to hearing foreign names. But I will say I am saddened that many English speakers are missing out on the incredibly punny intentions of the original Japanese names, and that by creating an English version of the name, while you are not keeping the original character name, you are better portraying the vibe of the original name's meaning.

food for thought but if you primarily consume media that originates from a specific country and all the original publications of the said media is in the mother tongue of the country, then the only way to truly, deeply, insanely, consume that media is to learn the language it is published in. Because you’ll find yourself consumed by this media and often some of the most intimate, life changing details get lost in translation from one language to another. For example, the last mha chapter, Bakugou saying “koi” and the deep analysis into the subtle, intimate undertones of that word alone truly changed everything about that last panel. It made it so much more, jarring. Similarly with danmei novels, so much gets lost in the translation. To truly understand the depth of your favourite media, consider learning the language itself, because it is such a fulfilling experience to be able to understand what the author or creator was truly trying to express without being barricaded by the translations.

So I’m new to bkdk/dkdk and I’m reading/watching mha as I read fanfiction and snoop online etc u know how it is. Ofc I’ve been swamped with the iconic line ‘for the rest of our lives’ which is what got me into it in the first place like. You’re telling me that’s canon??? But I just decided to take a sneak peak at chap 424 (not the official manga coz I’m a cheap bitch but some other site) and no one says that anywhere. I think Katsuki says ‘competing for a while’ or something but what’s going on??? Am I reading a botched version? I’m aware of fan scans etc so is this a translation issue or am I just stoopid? Where did everyone get this iconic line from??

The Fascinating Translation of When Bakugou Says "Deku trusts you"

(this is something that was already discussed within the fandom to an extent a long time ago but I wanted to bring it back because its just so interesting)

In chapter 284 of MHA, Bakugou says "Deku trusts you with his life, but..." which is the official VIZ translation of the panel. Before this, many fan translations of the chapter came out with different translations of this sentence due to the fact that the original sentence in Japanese itself is a tad difficult to properly translate into English.

In Japanese, he says, "デクは 信じ切ってっけど さァ" (deku wa shinji kitte kkedo saa)

I could break down the sentence but im very very lazy so if anybody would like that then please just say so.

But basically with the way that Japanese grammar works the sentence could be translated in 4 different ways!

"Deku trusts me, but..."

2. "I trust Deku, but..."

3. "You trust Deku, but..."

4. "Deku trusts you, but..."

Meaning that the reader of this sentence must be able to know the actual meaning based on context, as Japanese is one of the many high context cultures and pronoun avoidance languages.

Because of this, many fan translations in English (as well as some other languages) ended up translating the sentence in a way that creates an entirely different meaning.
