since i got into bandori i've been thinking a lot about the instruments that the girls use, especially the drummers, and one thing that always kinda felt off is that maya has an acoustic kit in canon but pasupare plays a bunch of songs with electronic drum sounds. and i don't know why it took me 5 years to consider the fact that she could have turned the acoustic kit into an electric one.

so most of the bandori drummers have very high end kits. notably ako and masuki, but saya's, tomoe's, tsukushi's, taki's, and nyamu's kits are all at the upper echelon of their respective brands. kanon and maya are the only two that have tama kits, which are already known for being among the more affordable brands, but their kits are the only ones that don't break the $1000 mark. for kanon this makes sense, kind of. she had bought the drum set just to try it out, and the imperialstar from tama is the perfect beginner kit. tama sells it as a complete set with cymbals, hardware, and accessories rather than just the drums. since kokoro stopped her from returning it, it makes sense that she played with hello happy world using that kit. now this also raises the question of why the tsurumaki family didn't upgrade it while they also bought kaoru that guitar, but my best guess is she got nicer cymbals and drumheads, as well as proper maintenance for that kit, because it still is a good sounding kit if you take care of it.

anyway getting back to maya's kit, it is a little strange how the biggest gearhead has a relatively cheap kit. it's nicer than kanon's for sure, but it's by no means one of their flagship kits or even one that's still on the market. and then it hit me. she actually turned her drum kit into an electric kit. first let's talk about how electric kits work. it's all a series of pads connected to a module that detects when a certain pad is hit and plays the correct sound either to your headphones or some other output like a speaker or recording interface. each pad has a trigger inside it that detects when the pad has been hit. and for a lot of higher end electronic kits that look like acoustic kits, like the higher end roland and alesis kits, these triggers are meant to mimic the response of an actual drum. you can also buy the triggers on their own, which leads me to believe that's how maya has her kit set up.

there are a few different kinds of triggers that you can use, but you can probably characterize them best by external and internal. external drum triggers you can just slap onto any drum and plug it into a module. it's a common practice especially with kick drums if you want to change the sound of the drums in the middle of a set without going through the motions of changing a drumhead or a pedal. you even see these in the bandori live performances: i know that ako's and masking's kit both use them, and that gives me enough reason to believe that the rest of the live bands do it too. but there's a limitation to this. these triggers can really only detect when the drum is hit and how hard it's been hit, leaving out the crucial detail of where the drum was hit. with kick drums, the pedal is hitting the exact same spot every time, so this isn't an issue. however, if you want to do this for your whole drum set, you need something else.

this is where those internal triggers come into play. instead of just putting these on a drum, you need to install these underneath the drum head, and they're meant for playing purely electronically, so you typically use a quiet mesh head rather than the typical mylar head. there are internal triggers that operate exactly like the external ones, but there are also fancier ones that instead of sensing the impacts from the edge of the drumhead, sense them from the middle of the head. this allows the sensor to also relay information regarding the location of the hit, which allows the module to modify the sound even further, giving a much more realistic feel.

心の友 (Tomo no Kokoro) (Heart of a Friend)

Usagi first learns about ADHD from the turtle brothers and sister. 

Usagi is delighted it’s another thing he shares with Leo. “It’s amazing how our ADHDs synchronized,” Usagi says to him. “It’s like we’re twi-”

Donnie slams his hands vehemently on the table. “I’m sorry but the twin title has already been taken,” he says with more force than he intended (not).

Usagi didn’t seem to mind. “Old friends?” he tries.

“Nah,” April says, even if she’s only teasing, “I think that would be MY title.”

Leo raised his hand for a high-three at him, “Shell yeah, soul sisters!”

Usagi brightened. While his English is not yet native level, he tried to match Leo’s words. “Soul” plus “sisters” closest in Japanese is tomo no kokoro, so in other English words....

He clasped Leo’s hand instead and smiled at him. “Soulmates,” he agreed. 

Usagi is very much confused when everyone around him and Leo hoots as Leo chokes, jokingly shoving him while laughing with a darkened face.

Later, they all have to clear the air that the word soulmates in English mostly has romantic connotations, and when Usagi meant tomo no kokoro, the closest word in English is a platonic soulmate. 

Of course, someone tattled to Gen, Kitsune, and Chizu, and they didn’t live it down for a few days instead. It’s just a few days because the incident gave them insight into why Usagi still isn’t dating Leo despite having an intimate friendship. 

After the teasing at Leo’s side from his fam, Leo just put it at the back of his mind to try to focus their team on whatever needed them in New York because of his narrowly-avoided-apocalypse guilt. 

Eyeliners and Fluttering Claws

Yuichi Usagi feels put out, but April has never been so amused by how he got excited over friendship rings and plans to buy one for Leo until she has to explain they’re for pre-engagement with a romantic partner. 

Luckily, Kitsune and Chizu find a makeup stand and make Usagi one of their “blank paper.” Usagi asks if they can use red for his eyes. The girls teach him how to use an eyeliner. 

Usagi wears them for a couple of days in Neo Edo, like getting used to a pair of shoes before he finally feels confident wearing it in New York.

He’s a tad nervous when he enters the lair. But Leo takes one look at him and fucking squeals at the sight of him. 

Like scoops him up and twirls him around as he takes a good look at his red-lined eyes. “We match! Well, kinda.”

Usagi grins, “I was inspired.”

“Looks great on you,” Leo said, running his fingers through the fur on Usagi’s cheeks. 

Leo pauses, looking at his hands in confusion before shrugging. 

Basketball and Bunny Circling

Leo and Usagi made a makeshift hoop on the flat area of the farm to teach the ex-ninja orphans how to play basketball.

Leo almost regrets introducing basketball to Usagi because he became a match his turtle brothers couldn’t compare to.

Usagi is fast and likes running circles around him (even in their sparring), so Leo responds by running around him as they both try to get the ball from each other. 

Usagi’s aunt passes by the area to see them playing. She knows Usagi isn’t that much of a show-off, but there seems to be an unnecessary amount of running circles around his friend until she realizes he was circling. 

She continued on her way, smiling. She has never seen him do that since he was a kid.

Sunbathing and “Purring”

Leo likes sunbathing, which he and his brothers can only do with a giant sunlamp in the lair. But on Usagi’s farm, he and his brothers could soak up the rays without alarming anyone (more or less). 

Usagi tends to flop on top of Leo’s shell for a few minutes (it makes an excellent back stretcher, as recommended by April and agreed on by Kitsune). 

Leo was taken aback by what he thought was purring until he realized Usagi was grinding his teeth.

Usagi has to reassure Leo that he wasn’t teeth grinding out of stress and didn’t harm his teeth. Rabbits just have that habit.

Title: Two Voices, One Song

Donatello has to wake up to a song playing ON LOOP for the whole lair to hear while Leo belts out along with it.

He’s clawing for coffee when Raph appears.

“Leo! Turn that down!” And “Isn’t that from the Barbie movie?” Raph asks.

“Yep!” Mikey answered, jiving to the beat.

“Ah yes,” Donnie said loudly with an eye roll after straightening up brew. “That song. From the Barbie movie. From one of the most heavily queer-themed movies of the Barbie franchise.” 

The lyrics,“…Somehow when you're around / The sky is always blue”, play, and they all get on the same page.

“Aaaw, love is in the air,” Mikey gushes.

“Wrong,” Donnie says, putting on a gas mask. “It’s neurotoxin,” he promises.

Okay, he’s joking. He’s just going to gas the lair with nitrous oxide to knock Leo out, but the others still feel the need to stop him. 

Days later, they heard Usagi humming it. 

“Sorry,” Usagi says when he sees them staring at him. “Leo introduced it to me, and it became our song.”

Cool, cool. As far as Donnie is concerned, best friends have their own songs sometimes. As much as he likes to be knowledgeable about everything, there are some things he’d rather be ignorant of. Like Leo and Usagi’s… whole situation. 

What does the fam think

Raph is torn between “Please only date when I’m dead” and “Where did I go wrong?” with his brother not even noticing what he and the rabbit have. 

Mikey is more chill and has Dr. Feelings ready if Leo ever looks conflicted and needs someone to talk to. 

Splinter almost has a heart attack when Usagi asks, “I would like to ask for your permission to ask Leo... to go on a training pilgrimage with me.” (Draxum has to listen to him rant that his sons turned his hair white but that Yuichi boy will make him bald.)

April and Casey Jr. are content to wait in the “let them figure it out” league (April is waiting with a bat, just in case).  

Disagreements

Disagreements with Leo often end up with someone exploding or confrontations because Leo tends to use avoidance tactics and show that he isn’t mad, as it wouldn’t match his cool persona.

But that doesn’t work with Usagi if he senses something wrong. Because whenever Leo tells him, “It’s cool, so drop it,” Usagi doesn’t drop since he’s not much of a listener, so they can work together to fix it. 

Let them be Ace

“You know, I think I’m ace,” Usagi confides.

“Ace?” Leo asks.

Usagi nods. “I thought I liked both, but it turns out I don’t really care either way.”

“Oh.”

The next day, Leo speaks out of the blue. “I think I’m ace too.”

“Yeah?“ Usagi asks.

“Yeah, I read about it. I’m still gay. But I’m just more of a cuddler than the other, y’know?”

Usagi brightens. “I know! Sometimes, I have the urge to nuzzle my face on yours!”

“You too? Me too!” Leo exclaims. 

Leo wakes up one night. “Waitaminute…”

Daydreaming at Night

On the same night, Usagi’s thoughts were running.

Usagi has the tendency to space out with his comic book fantasies inspired by his Usagi Yojimbo comics. It’s his favorite thing to do while waiting to fall asleep.

It’s normal to fantasize about meeting your best friend as if by fate and having to fight together like you’re both reading each other’s minds, growing closer along the plot, declaring to each other that you’ll always have each other’s back, and overcoming the bitter rivalry of their ninja and samurai clans with the power of your friendship, right?

But after his ace talk with Leo, it’s like his mind was finally allowed to explore a little bit further...

Which has Usagi sitting up all flustered because-

And suddenly, the realization hits, and the pieces fit. 

The sun rises, and Usagi still hasn’t slept at all.

(I’m really trying to exorcise all these ideas into a post since they won’t leave me alone, but it seems like there’s gonna be a part 4 for the conclusion.)

I find it amazing how Nishimori never seems to run out of music or lyrics for William's inner struggles. We've seen it a bit of it in Op. 3 and and it was oh so very painful in Op. 4, yet now that his death (or at least, what William thinks to be his death) is approaching, it feels even more painful. It's the heavy kind of pain that really sucks your soul.

Todoroki Enji's father's death and why he feels he's not a superhuman: observations, ramblings and speculations

So, since recently I've gotten asks about it, I ended up thinking more and more about the whole flashback regarding Enji's father's death and why he connects it to his weakness and to how he feels he'll never be a superhero while Deku or All Might are.

So, as usual what follows is a theory. I don't assume to be Horikoshi and therefore know the truth. I'm just theorizing.

Now, let's start with rewatching the full scene from chap 356 for who doesn't remember it well.

'Sara ni yowaku natta’ 「更に弱くなった」 “You became beyond weak.”

'Tachiba to tsugunai to ayamachi to sekinin ga’ 「立場と償いと過ちと責任が」 “Position, atonement, mistakes and responsibility.”

'Omae no seirai no yowasa wo abaki dashi miru ni taenai guzu e to hikizuri oroshita’ 「おまえの生来の弱さを曝き出し見るに堪えない愚図へと引きずり下ろした」 “Your innate weaknesses was exposed and I can’t bear to see how you were dragged down into an indecisive person.”

'Chōjin ni wa narenainda yo Enji (omae) wa’ 「超人にはなれないんだよ炎司（おまえ）は」 “Enji (read: you) can’t become a superhuman.”

'Genten wo omoi dase’ 「原点を思い出せ」 “Remember your origin.”

'Sou. Omae wa All Might ni mo Deku ni mo narenai' そう おまえはオールマイトにもデクにもなれない “Yes. You can't become All Might or Deku”

'Enji (read: Ore) wa itsumo jibun no yowasa to shika tatakattenakatta kara' 炎司(おれ)はいつも自分の弱さとしか戦ってなかったから “Because Enji (read: I) was always fighting only against his (my) own weaknesses.”

'Dakara umare kawarou nante kangaeruna' だから 生まれ変わろうなんて考えるな “So don’t think about being reborn.”

'“Onore no yowasa (teki)” wo noroi tsudzukero' “己の弱さ (てき)"を呪い続けろ “Keep cursing 'your own weakness (read: the enemy)'.”

'Yuiitsu sore dake ga omae wo ikashite kita dakara' 唯一 それだけが おまえを生かしてきただから “That is the only thing that kept you alive.”

As I've said more than once recently, on the surface there seems to be too few info on Enji's father's death to judge things beyond that the visual seems to suggests Enji seems in shock and in pain at witnessing his father's death.

But in hindsight the fact that there's so little might be because Horikoshi actually placed a relevant information through which lenses we should read the scene earlier in the manga and it's a relevant information as it's one of the core themes of the story.

Let's go back to chap 1 and to Midoriya's question.

Which was All Might's first reply?

Without power (力 'Chikara') one can't become a Hero and Enji's life is a quest for power, for strength. He thinks in order to surpass All Might one needs more power, more strength.

However we know how chap 1 actually ends...

Enji's origin (that's how his teenager self called it) isn't one of him acting to save people. It's of him watching the scene.

The narrative implication of depicting him there might be that he was always present and didn't jump to action, he froze, he watched.

His father moved to save people, failed and died.

Enji could have gone to help him and this might have done the difference. He'll never know because he didn't do it.

He froze same as he froze when Natsuo was attacked.

Same as he froze when Touya attacked Shouto and tried to kill himself and his brother...

...and, in a way, same as he failed to save Touya because he didn't go to Sekoto Peak.

The message Horikoshi tried to deliver home with that scene and that speech might be tied to all this.

Enji didn't have that self sacrificing instinct that instead pushed Midoriya to move. For most of his life he tried to protect his own heart by blaming others and dodging responsibilities and pushing on his children the burden of erasing him of the ugliness in his heart.

He fights it to be a Hero, and chases power because that's an 'easy way' to win. If you're stronger you don't have to risk your life, you can easily overcome fear of death by never being in danger either.

Yes, yes, I know Enji risks life in his fight with Shigaraki and with All for One. The point might be though is he's putting his life in danger by fighting himself, his own weakness, by raging against it and finding strength to overcome his own fear through rage.

And that's why his decision to die with Touya might be twice as important for his arc (I've already talked about his arc here and here but just in terms of his atonement... not of him trying to become a Hero to be proud of... or a father). As said in another post Enji never planned for his demise prior to that moment, he assumed he would keep on living watching over Touya.

He's not raging here to overcome his fear of death. He's doing it just because he doesn't want to let his son die alone and because he wants to still protect the people.

He's being a father and a Hero.

But... I can hear you thinking 'he's not saving Touya'.

Yeah, because he's fighting down with an image of a Hero who's self sacrificing... but BNHA subverts the trope of the self sacrificing Hero.

While death might be sometimes inevitable an ultimate Hero in the story is a Hero who save by winning and win by saving.

The story has criticized the idea of self sacrificing more than once from the start, with Aizawa and Recovery Girl telling Midoriya it wasn't okay for him to break his bones to win, that he couldn't become a Hero this way, Recovery Girl also scolding All Might and telling him he shouldn't encourage him to act this way to culminate with the end of the Dark Hero arc in which such mindset is openly criticized.

Enji overcame his belief he couldn't sacrifice his life if he wasn't raging against himself. He was ready to die... but then Shouto stepped him and showed him that an ultimate Hero isn't just one who's willing to die to save people but one that by saving people wins.

Shouto (with the help of his family) freezes Touya, and by saving Touya and stopping him from exploding, he saved all the other people who would be involved in the explosion.

The whole ultimate Hero thing is likely going to reach its apex with Midoriya not only managing to physically save Shigaraki like Shouto did with Touya or emotionally saving him like Uraraka did with Himiko but saving him both physically and emotionally and this leading to the rest of the world to be saved, accomplishing what will be likely the ultimate saving... possibly doing so with the help of others and of society so as to remark that a world based on a single pillar is not really functional, everyone has to contribute to keep peace.

At least, that's what I'm currently speculating. Of course I can be completely off track because I'm not Horikoshi and I don't get to know what he's planning.

Ahhhhh this was really tricky to translate as this song was full of metaphors (classic Satocchan). But even though it hurt my brain so much, I pushed through as I believe this is one of their best songs - I feel like it’s a love letter of some sort to their fans/supporters for being their light, and because they received so much love and support (light) from them, they will do their best to pass on that light to others through their music.

Welp, I'm (not yet really) back from the dead just for this! It's been such a long time since I last posted here (and actually translated something HAHA) (edit: WOW MY LAST POST HERE WAS MORE THAN A YEAR AGO WHAT). I've been real busy with real life - work, work, and did I say work? :(( I miss having lots of time HAHA ;_; also, life update - I took the JLPT N4 exam last December and passed woo thus the inactivity here :))

ANYWAY, enough of me. Let's talk about this song. This song was so beautiful, so heartfelt, it brought me out of depression inactivity. God they did it again: Yanagi's lyrics, together with Buyan's emotional vocals in this song - just hit me so hard I was CRYING HARD after listening to this the first time :(( The words they used in the song may be mostly simple (and I love it so much because it makes translating relatively easier - but definitely STILL NOT EASY), but the message was so so so meaningful. Especially the whole second verse + second pre-chorus where they speak about how we try to understand ourselves and the people around us better. If we try to understand people without understanding/knowing ourselves first, then we're more likely to hurt the other people because we'd only be showing them someone who isn't the real us just to ~please~ them. We can't become someone else just to conform, but we are all beautifully unique, and no matter our differences, we all deserve the true happiness that we all strive for.

Aaahhhhhh idk I feel like this is a ~sequel~ to Shiawase HAHAHA this is now my second most fave song from Super Beaver fr fr :(((
