I'm going to start teaching my nephews some basic colour theory; they're 9 and 10 and really passionate artists, and I think a little knowledge now will help them push themselves a lot further.

I'm going to start with colour mixing. I really think that color mixing using paint is a valuable metaphor even if you are working digitally 99% of the time. who knows what my nephews will end up focusing on as they get older, but having the metaphor of mixing paint to achieve different colors and understand how colors relate to each other visually should be a really useful ground level structure in any ongoing learning they do with color theory.

so I've put together a watercolor palette using student grade non-toxic paints. we've got two reds, two yellows, two blues, and burnt sienna.

I'm going to include white gouache as well, so we can talk about tinting colors, and how colors appear different when they are diluted versus tinted. also, honestly when I was their age I think watercolor was really punishing, and just bringing in some white gouache gives them a chance to rework areas if they want to. I'm hoping this makes stuff a little less frustrating and helps them feel more empowered to keep fixing and pushing their work instead of just giving up.

I don't currently have a plan to have black paint in there right now, because I want us to focus on color mixing, but I wouldn't on principal prevent them from having a pan of black paint in future for their own time with the paint. I just think it might be distracting or confusing when I'd rather we focus on mixing neutrals with these colorful pigments.

I've got five Windsor and Newton Cotman brand pans - phthalo blue, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow hue, cadmium red medium hue, and burnt sienna; and the other two pans i filled with van Gogh brand tube paint - ultramarine deep and madder lake deep.

This gets me a decent spread of secondaries without confusing anything by introducing the CMY approach.

I think learning the CMY palette will be valuable too! but it made sense to me to start with palette that most resembled what they are likely to be learning in school in terms of subtractive color mixing. if they do learn about additive color mixing, they'll be working with the cmy palette with light, so I figure I'll let this be different at the moment.

I've included burnt sienna after weighing my options, because I think it's important for them to learn how to neutralize colors in a few different ways. burnt sienna and ultramarine blue are such a classic neutral formula, and such a great way to mix something that's nearly black, that it felt important to include. the fact that when you mix it with the phthalo blue you get a green instead of a neutral, I think that's a really great example of how color mixing can be surprising as well.

I'm working on a couple little example paintings to help them see the range that is possible with this palette, so here's one with greens and purples; I'll do one in neutrals overall and another maybe in oranges and teals.

I think for exercises we might want to work up to the colour wheel - maybe starting first with the basics of mxing using different rations to get different colours, and go from there.

If anyone has any advice on teaching this to 9 and 10 year olds, I'd love to hear it! I think they'll be excited to try something new and open up more possibilities for themselves as artists right now; beyond that I won't be particularly intense about it.

Alright so art rant here. I've been pretty out of practice of digital art for a while and this whole fandom has deeply inspired me. I'm really appreciative.

Raph: This was my first one and I was not used to the brushes and some of the layer capabilities of my program but overall I like it. The pose is nice and I originally had a sketch of a blank OC template in his lap to customize if ever I wanted. The background ain't halfbad but I think Donnie's is my fav.

Mikey: Probably my favorite for color balance and lighting. The angle was very fun also. Also those ripped jeans were fun. Very little to complain about except that I wish I found the speckle brush for this one. Overall my favorite of the four.

Leo: Super lazy on the background, but the angle was fun to try and emphasize his muscles and waist. Absolutely vivid I love the colors. I'm awful at finishing flat colors before shading and keep mxing up the layers for them but you can't tell from the pic. Need to learn how to color reflective material better, the sword is very mediocre I know I can do better if I learn.

Donnie: Absolutely my favorite background even though it's simple. I may have set the foreground a bit too dark to see his features clearly but it's fine for now. I cannot refrain myself from drawing suspicious bulges in Donnie's pants even in otherwise SFW stuff.

All of them: I need to remember to color their nails properly lol otherwise extremely happy about these. Great warm up drawings to put oil in my gears. I have better understanding of colors and brushes.

Having them all done now has unblocked my mental obsession and now I can start drawing unrestrained smut more art for these wonderful men 😈

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 cup granulated sugar

1 egg, room temp

2 egg yolks, room temp

1 tbsp pure vanilla extract

1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup cake flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp cinnamon

Pinch of nutmeg

Cream Cheese Frosting:

4 oz cream cheese, softened

4 tbsp butter, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

Apple Topping:

2-3 apples (I used gala but any work!)

4 tbsp butter

3-4 tablespoons granulated sugar

Cinnamon

1 tsp lemon juice

Optional:

Caramel for drizzling

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Beat softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until combined and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Add the egg, egg yolks, and vanilla extract then mix until just combined.

In a medium bowl, whisk the all-purpose flour, cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add this dry mixture to the stand mixer with the wet ingredients. Mix until fully combined.

Using a cookie scoop, take a full scoop of dough and in form it into a ball. Place on the cookie sheet. Repeat while spacing out the balls about 3 to 4 inches from each other.

Bake for 9-12 minutes or until golden and puffy. After 15 minutes the cookies can be transferred to a cooling rack.

Frosting:

In a small mxing bowl, beat cream cheese and the butter together until smooth. Add in powdered sugar and mix until perfectly creamy.

Once cookies are cool, pipe or spread frosting onto cookie.

Apple topping:

Peel and chop the apples as small as you can (for easy cookie application). Set aside.

On medium-high heat, add the butter to a pan and when the butter is completely melted, add in the chopped apples.

Sprinkle as much cinnamon as you’d like. You can start off with a teaspoon at a time.

Add in the lemon juice and sugar.

Mix ingredients all together and cook, while stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender. You can also leave the apples on the crunchier side if that’s what your prefer!

Let cool before adding it to the cookies.

Finish off the cookie with a caramel drizzle

Studio news

May 12th, 2009

Only 5 more days left in the studio before we head back to the UK, and I realise any information on how the actual recording is going, has been pretty sparse. So I’ll endeavor to fill in some gaps here: It’s going great, thanks.

Currently I am sat in the ‘lounge’ area as Tom bashes through some glock overdubs. I’ll end up playing them live, but realise my limitations, and that Tom could nail them in a fraction of the time that I would take, so he gets to sweat in the recording booth for a little longer.

We’ve been in very good hands here. John Goodmanson obviously steering us, but we’ve also been in the capable palms of Eric of The Long Winters, Michael of Telekinesis and Jackson of BOAT. Everyone is an absolute pleasure to work with, and their keenness to ensure our happiness and enjoyment of being here has left me feeling like a diva at times. That and the having an unlimited supply of vitamin water.

We’re at the point now where all the drums/bass/guitars are done. Myself, Haz and Aleks are filling in our bits, and there’s still some ambient and noise tracks to do, as well as some percussion and what not, but it seems everyone’s feeling good about getting things done in the time we have. Once we’ve finished here, we reconvene in Mid-Wales in Mid-June to mix the record, and inevitably finish off some final vocals and violin parts. And the studio we’ll be mxing at in Wales has the most amazing sounding recording room, so we’ll probably use that for some ambience and what not.

have folk coming in to play Horns/Cello/Double bass/Saxophone as well as some guest vocals, which are all things that haven’t happened on a Los Campesinos! record before. I’ll hopefully have some photos of that to show.

Story about a scientist and a slime.

Success always seems to occur in bizarre forms..

It was bitter work, but it had finally been done. Months of testing, so many attempts had failed. So many failures and finally one final success.

The lone scientist Kae stands before two large silver archways. The mechanical maw, threatening to swallow them whole. They smile as they wipe the sweat from their face and reach to throw a nearby lever.

The archway hums and whirs to life! A small light in the center rapidly growing into a full sized portal in one! Right before another opens in the second archway!

Meniacal laughter and flashing lights illuminate the room to reveal a series of jars and other various baubles. Labeled containers filled with various specimens and substances that sit on the shelf above the archways.

One particular jar, filled with a dazzlingly sparkly liquid shudders and shakes. As if alive with both sentience and newfound curiosity. Mesmerized by the pretty flashing lights, pushes against its glass prison.

Shatter!

The glass hits the floor! A thick, dark liquid covers the floor and splatters through the portal! The ooze colides with the portal, imbueing and changing colors; before shooting out the portal and onto a cylinder that happened to be nearby.

The machine sparks and sputters before dying out with a startling poof of smoke. Kae coughs and waves away the haze. As the fog clears, the culprit behind the machines malfunction comes into view.

The viscous slime on the floor oozes and bubbles, before pulling itself together into a petite woman, shimmering in hues of indigo and turquoise. She looks around curiously, oblivious to the potential damage she has caused. As she looks around, Kae notices some rather distinguishing features. Of note being a small light coming from what could only be it's..

Kae goes to reach out to the slime, before noticing the same light coming from a small cylinder on their table. Blushing as they realize the object is not for work, but pleasure. A fleshlight, used to keep them occupied during the graveyard shift.

A smile forms on their lips. The machine may have broke, but the experiment was a success.
