Muslim!Lily (and James) Headcanons

When she was sorting, everyone stared weirdly at her headscarf

At her sorting, a boy said something rude to her, she punched him right in the nose

Some students called McGonagall and she gave the boy a detention

Lily and James had suhoor (the meal eaten before starting fasting in Ramadan) together

There were other other students too but for absolutely no reason (!) they chose to have it face to face

She argued with Snape a multiple times because of course Snape's friends weren't really accepting towards Lily's religion

When people said stupid things about James' color and religion, Lily hexed them and made them say "I'm sorry"

Lily usually did wudu in the Prefects' Bathroom because no one disturbed her there

One of the reasons Marauders created the Marauder's Map was looking for a peaceful place for James to do this daily prayings (five times a day so it's really important)

Lily showed them the Room of Requirement because she was already using that room

Regulus and Muslim!Jily headcanons

With Regulus and Remus’ friendship and Regulus being a cultural nerd

Tw: child abuse, and mentions of islamophobia

So Regulus obviously grows up hearing all kinds of things about Muslims, muggleborn and werewolves from his parents. He doesn’t really understand why his parents hate them so much or why Sirius always argues with them about it when he knows he’ll be punished, so Regulus just stays quite

At Hogwarts, he hears his housemates throwing around words like “terrorist” and “killers” while talking about James and Lily or other Muslim students, but he doesn’t get it. He does hate James, but that’s because of the burning jealousy he feels when Sirius talks about him like he’s the bestest friend he ever had. He doesn’t have any problem with Lily because he doesn’t understand why he should hate her just because of her religion or because her parents aren’t wizards. If anything, he is fascinated by her clothing that is so different from what others wear or when he overhears her talking to her friends. Because he has a deep love for different cultures and reading about all the differences between them. But he buries that curiosity because he doesn’t want to find out how his parents will react if they found out

That is, until he becomes a Prefect and has to share rounds with Remus Lupin. He would never admit it out loud, but Remus actually seems nice. He is friendly and makes small talks during their rounds, never bothered by Regulus’ lack of response

 One day, when Remus looks especially sick, they stumble across Lily and Alice, who fuss over him and tell him to go back to dorms earlier tonight. As he agrees and bids them goodbye, Regulus notices that Alice hugs him but Lily only smiles before leaving. After a short debate with himself, he bites the bullet and asks him about it. Remus looks a little surprised at first, but then explains to Regulus how her religion advises her to avoid contact with men

And slowly it becomes a thing. Regulus asks more questions every day and Remus answers them, though he almost always adds that it’s not necessary that it applies to everyone and he is only answering from what he knows. Regulus tells him not  to tell Sirius or anyone else about it and Remus promises that he won't. Sirius and James come up in these conversations usually, and Regulus finds himself missing Sirius even more, and begrudgingly accepts to himself that James doesn’t sound too bad if what Remus says about him is anything to go by

Remus keeps his promise of not telling anyone, but does suggest subtly that Regulus should talk to Sirius, or that Sirius still talks about him sometimes. He really wants to but he doesn’t know how to do that or where to go from there

As Regulus quietly admits his interest in knowing about cultures, Remus gets some cultural books from Lily that they start reading in the library and he has to admit that it’s the best part of his day

And on one of these days, Regulus is a bit early and finds Sirius sitting very close to Remus, pestering him to come back to the dorm. Sirius looks horrified at first at seeing Regulus but then defensive, while Remus just greets him politely. Not sure about what to do, Regulus just sits opposite them and greets Remus back and seeing sirius’ confused expression, just mutters, “At least button up your shirt.” Remus chuckles softly while Sirius turns a deep red, still looking perplexed. Remus gives Regulus an apologetic look, probably because his promise broke, though it was a mistake, but Regulus realizes he does want to talk to his brother again, so he tells Sirius about their meetings. Sirius as expected looks betrayed and even a little hurt but he spends the rest of the time with them, commenting occasionally

Their relationship is obviously very unstable, but slowly, after many arguments and some heartfelt conversations that leave Regulus feeling raw and untethered, they somewhat get back to what they were. And Regulus will absolutely never admit it to anyone but maybe, maybe Remus, but as James, Peter and Lily occasionally join them too, he finds their company nice too. James has a ton of stories from his childhood and from what his parents tell him. Lily tells him about reverting to Islam when her aunt reverted and how different that experience is from being born Muslim

Regulus surprisingly finds himself looking forward to these conversations even more and missing them when he can’t make it because his housemates start getting suspicious

Sirius keeps telling him to come with him to live with James’ parents, and Regulus’ responses go from “I can’t” to “I will think about it” and when they have to leave for holidays, Regulus realizes he really doesn’t want to go back home, but he doesn’t have any choice

On the day they have to leave, Sirius again tells him to come with him and he looks so close to tears that Regulus feels his own eyes sting with tears. But he refuses and Sirius walks away with a muttered curse. The others leave with goodbyes too, but Remus stays back to say “Can you promise me something?” And after Regulus’ nod, says, “If anything happens and you want to leave, please leave. I know it seems scary and you think that you have to stay but that’s not true. You can leave.”

Regulus thinks about those words a lot the following days as he returns back home. And when, a week later at dinner, his parents talk badly about muggleborns and Muslims, he understands why Sirius got so angry, and for the first time, he talks back to his parents. The first slap from his mother is expected, what isn’t expected is finding himself biting back, “This is why you always punished Sirius, isn’t it? Just because he thought muggles and Muslims deserve to live?” His mother’s face flashes with fury and then it’s cuts and blood and pain

Later when he is sitting alone on the floor, trembling and wondering how Sirius endured this for years, Kreacher comes there and Regulus asks him to bring his trunk from his room and painfully walks to the fireplace, feeling an odd sense of déjà vu as he remembers standing outside the door and seeing Sirius leave

“Potters Mansion,” he whispers, the words feeling odd on his tongue but hopeful all the same

James Potter loved his soulmark. 

He had the words 'Alhumdulillah' on his wrist in a grey hue. And it wasn’t just the fact that it was a wonderful feeling to know there was someone for him, it was also the words. Alhumdulillah which meant Praise be to Allah or All thanks to Allah in Arabic felt like a blessing in itself to be on his skin. He would look at it when someone would say something cruel to him and mumble the word to himself, thinking of the things he was grateful for. And when he was happy, he would look at it with a smile and whisper the word reverently. With years, it became a second habit to remember the word in happiness and clung to it in sadness.     

Everyone was born with a grey soulmark, and when you would meet your soulmate and would hear them say the words, the soulmark would turn black. James had seen it happen before, when he and Sirius seen Remus on their first day of college and Sirius had whispered to James, "He's so fucking gorgeous, what the fuck." And before James could have told him that he didn't actually whisper and said that quite loudly, Remus had whipped his head to look at Sirius with a "Shit it's you." And James had seen the words on Sirius' wrist turn black.

My thoughts are that of course people can choose to write whatever fanfics they want and on Ao3 there are some pretty unpalatable tropes and ships. Some of these fics are probably extremely well written by very talented people. I don’t think that we should be censoring Ao3 or banning books/fics if at all possible, because that’s what totalitarian governments do all the time.

Having said that, it’s legitimate and appropriate and right to publicly express dismay or upset about the content of fics if a person believes that they perpetuate or glorify racism or antisemitism or extremism of any sort. It’s appropriate to say that it hurts you and to say it here in our community on tumblr and our Jily discord, because we are a fandom that generally seeks to be supportive and inclusive of everyone and should respect if members are describing feeling hurt or marginalised by some of our group’s writing. Even if this is completely unintended. Because we are all of us unintentionally biased in some way: I’ve seen people who consider themselves very liberal and completely unbiased behave in racist, misogynistic, ableist, antisemitic, homophobic, transphobic ways.

We all know of famous women’s rights activists who were racist, of famous civil rights activists who were misogynistic and homophobic, of 🏳️‍🌈 activists who were misogynistic or transphobic. Even the Allies during WW2 while abhorring Nazism left hundreds of gay German men in prison (placed there by the Nazis). I know that right at this moment in time there’s a big risk that I am unknowingly engaging in some form of micro-aggression towards a marginalised group.

Did you know that recent research found that if you are female and your surgeon is male, your outcomes will be less favourable than if you are a male patient? Did you know if you manage to get a female surgeon that the outcomes are better for women and no different for all patients (lucky men)? Did you know that many young people in the US do not know the names of any of the Nazi Concentration Camps and some do not believe that the Holocaust ever happened? Did you know that In some medical training schemes they make you use a wheelchair for 24 hours to see exactly how people react to you and the results are not good? Did you know that the way we talk about autism has changed drastically in the past few years because of the activism of the autistic community? Did you know that Hollywood’s depiction of psychiatrists and psychologists as the bad guys in so many films including Marvel movies etc is rooted in stigmatising attitudes to mental health? Did you know that psychiatry is one of the least sought after specialties in the US because of similar reasons among doctors (as well as money)? Did you know that the Roma community, the Travelling Community and POC minority groups continue to suffer injustice and inordinate difficulties getting housing or holding onto jobs in Europe? That Muslim people and Jewish people experience hate based on their religion? I can only speak of my experiences in Europe but I am sure the same is true in North America, South America, Asia, Africa etc except the marginalised groups change from country to country.

We may know, we may think we know, but that doesn’t mean we are immune to it! I read back on medical files even just from 10 yrs ago and die of embarrassment at some of the language used, which was considered perfectly normal and okay at the time. I keep thinking what will people think about us in 10 yrs time? What form of discrimination will become apart that I will be shocked I was a part of?

NONE OF US IS IMMUNE TO THIS! I think if we take this as our starting point, then we will not be so upset and dismissive of criticism levelled at us from other people. We will assume there is a significant risk that we may well be unwittingly acting in a racist, homophobic, ableist, transphobic, misogynistic, antisemitic, anti-Muslim way, and be ready to honestly reevaluate our ideas and beliefs if we are challenged. I may be a victim of misogynistic behaviours but I may also be a racist. I may be a victim of racism but also be homophobic. The greatest people at risk of this are the people who suffer least discrimination in our society - cis white heterosexual men, obviously, and then all the way back to people who may be in more than one marginalised group.

Come back to this post in 10 years time and I bet you every single person here will be able to count at least one way that their behaviour or beliefs (now in 2022 considered fine by most of us) is no longer acceptable.

if anyone was wondering how the three most outspoken voices about this issue have been treated the past few days:

we’ve all had to turn off anon because of separate bouts of ad hominem vitriol

we’ve been told explicitly and repeatedly that everyone in Jily fandom hates us, are talking about how they wish we would shut up behind our backs, and that people no longer want us in the space/we’re not welcome

we have had our identities denied, ridiculed, and weaponized against us in order to manipulate us into thinking we’re making things up and there’s no issue

we’ve been told “well you should/could have been nicer about XYZ and maybe people would have listened to you” when discussing..our own feelings of discomfort

we’ve had to reiterate and re-explain these issues countless times to people who don’t want to listen

we’ve seen people staying silent when asked to interject and step up; paradoxically, people center themselves when asked to listen to marginalized voices. the isolation of that really can’t be overstated.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself here but I’m just tired. and I know people don’t want to hear about this anymore—I don’t want to keep talking about it. trust me, I would love to go back to posting content for everyone and interacting with stories and using this space as an escape from real life. but I can’t do that—WE can’t do that—until the appropriate boundaries are in place.

please support marginalized voices now that the dust is starting to settle; we’ve been through the ringer as it is.
