Teen Sensation Summer Bennett Unveils Debut EP “One Thousand Fahrenheit” Featuring the Electrifying Track “Just A Phase”
Tumblr media
At just 16 years of age, Summer Bennett from Paradise, NL, is emerging as one of Newfoundland’s most formidable talents. Summer won the 2021 Newfound Talent Contest from MusicNL and is a three time Arts and Letters Award winner. She is also a multi MusicNL and ECMA nominated artist.
Signed with Scilly Cove Records, Summer worked remotely with multi-Grammy Award winning producer Greg Wells between Newfoundland and Los Angeles on her debut One Thousand Fahrenheit EP. “Working with Greg has been a dream,” says Summer. “He has worked with the biggest stars in the world and I feel very lucky to have him produce my songs. It’s like he can read my mind!”
The EP’s focus track, “Just A Phase,” is about the toxicity and negative aspects that social media influence and the internet can bring. Deep lyrics cover a unique teenage perspective backed by a modern pop sound.

Celtic Christmas Lights
The lights of Christmas are glowing with a Christmas Story by Brad Tuck on Celtic Christmas Podcast #68.
Enda Reilly, Terry McDade With The McDades, Marc Gunn, Cherish The Ladies, The Chivalrous Crickets, Screaming Orphans, Anne Roos & David Blonski, Scythian, Brad Tuck, West of Eden
0:08 - Enda Reilly "Tá An Nollaig Linn" from Christmas is With Us (Tá An Nollaig Linn)
2:56 - WELCOME TO THE CELTIC CHRISTMAS PODCAST
I am Marc Gunn. I am an Celtic musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. This is the final episode of 2022.
Hopefully, we are all ready for the holiday. House and trees decorated. Presents wrapped and placed beneath the tree. The cats aren’t chewing on the wrapping paper. We are ready to relax for this festive time of year.
Make sure you check out Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.
What is Celtic Christmas music? Click the link to find out more.
4:20 - Terry McDade With The McDades "What Child Is This" from Midwinter
7:32 - Marc Gunn "Celtic Christmas Elf" from Celtic Christmas Greetings
10:26 - Cherish The Ladies "Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem/The Ballintore Fancy/The Kerry Reel/Limestone Rock" from On Christmas Night
15:17 - The Chivalrous Crickets "A Christmas Carol" from A Chivalrous Christmas
Christmas is an interesting time of year for musicians. Bigger artists are able to put together Christmas-themed shows. But many of the smaller indie artists create an album and dream of playing shows, but the venues stop booking. Christmas is a listening time of year. Not necessarily a buying time of year.
I tell you this to remind you to support the artists that you love in this show. Visit the shownotes to find out more about the artists at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. Then you can buy some music or merch from them, give them a tip, or even support your favorites on Patreon.

Born in Hant's Harbour, Newfoundland, Brad developed a love for music early in his life. Residing in St. John's, Brad is the drummer for a staple of the traditional Newfoundland music scene, Shanneyganock, and began a solo career in 2018 with the release of his first album "On These Waters". Brad was nominated for Traditional Artist of the Year at the 2018 & 2022 MusicNL Awards, and has released three full length albums, one EP and two Christmas singles.

Slowpoke Surprise with Spiteful Sludge From Newfoundland
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Despite their chosen name, SLOWPOKE is anything but a slouch. Following in a long tradition of foot stomping sludge bands like Down, Hollow Leg, and Orange Goblin, the St. John's trio has got spit, piss, and ire aplenty (musically speaking) on their self-titled full-length debut.
The record ranges from 10-minute genre busters (opener "Stony Iommi" and closer "Slowpoke") and sassy southern fried hellraisers ("Windtalker") to grungy downcast doomers ("Miami Camo," "Sanctuary") and minutes-long raucous raisers ("Slumlord"). A welcome blast of fresh air from our friends to the North!
Today, Slowpoke invite you to join them on their romping adventures with the single "Sid the Cat." Says the band:
This song is a series of mostly true stories about arguably the coolest cat in downtown St John’s: Sid! He sat in on a few of our jams when the bar Distortion was open and even came to some shows. We were lucky enough to have the great Al Yeti Bones from Age of Wolves, Gypsy Chief Goliath, and many other bands to feature on vocals. He absolutely killed it!
Look for the album 'Slowpoke' (2021) to see the light of day on August 22nd.
Give ear...
LISTEN: Slowpoke - "Sid the Cat"
SOME BUZZ
Slowpoke formed in St John's Newfoundland Canada in 2018 by Ben Chapman-Smith (Bass, Vocals) and Cameron Legge (Guitar). In early 2019 Adam Young (Drums) joined the band. The trio went on to record the bedrock of their upcoming album ‘Slowpoke” and closed the night at Still Heavy’s Midsummer Mayhem 3 festival and were dubbed the “hidden gem of the evening” by Tony Carew owner of Still heavy.
COVID-19 made live performances a non-option in 2020 so Slowpoke went inside and worked away at their release, and applied for a MusicNL Artist development grant which they received in January 2021. Upon receiving the grant Slowpoke enlisted the services of Rick Hollet at Redhouse Recording (sHeavy, Hey Rosetta!) for Mixing and Chris Keffer at Magnetic North (The Black Keys, Cheap Trick) studios for Mastering. Slowpoke is currently performing Newfoundland and has an album release show planned at the Rockhouse in St Johns on August 21st 2021 with The Birchmen and local legends sHeavy.
Slowpoke LP by Slowpoke
Slowpoke’s self-titled debut runs the gamut of heavy genres. It features epic, psychedelic passages that transition to fast punk rock, righteous riffs, fuzzladen doom and some straight up rock and roll. Slowpoke keeps things interesting with progressive songwriting and by drawing from a wide range of inspiration including bands like Clutch, The Melvins, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath and many more.

Fun times chatting with Tony Ploughman from @fredsltd about some local Christmas (and some not-so-Christmas) music for @cbcnl. Two things reconfirmed by our convo: 1) Tony is a man who knows his music. 2) NL has too many talented musicians to fit into a single segment #nlmusic #musicnl #christmasmusic

Tumblr media
Described as, “a multi-genre marvel,” (hidden-beats.com), Kellie Loder’s musical journey began on the shores of Newfoundland & Labrador, lending to their unmatched songwriting prowess, and distinctive blend of folk, Americana and indie pop influences.
Loder’s highly anticipated fourth studio record is set to drop globally in 2024. Elevating themselves to new heights, the upcoming record is a stunningly crafted masterpiece with stories of love, heartbreak, life and transitions. “Can’t Go Back,” the album’s second single, gives listeners a glimpse of the pure authenticity of one of Canada’s most promising and celebrated songwriters. As spoken by Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell (Canada’s Got Talent), “Loder has a bright future ahead,” and with this next offering, one thing is for certain, Kellie Loder is a towering talent about to explode on the world stage.
Loder’s signature sound coupled with their magnetic stage presence has earned them notable accolades including, “Songwriter of the Year” and “Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year” at the 2023 East Coast Music Awards, placing first-runner-up on Canada’s Got Talent (2022), and co-writing with household names such as Alan Doyle, Steven Page, The Good Lovelies, and Grammy Award-winning musician and producer Greg Wells to name a few. Loder’s empowering anthem, “Fearless,” was used as the soundtrack behind the CBC’s Tokyo Olympics coverage and in the Superpower Dogs IMAX Trailer narrated by Chris Evans (Captain America/Avengers). Their groundbreaking video and compelling song “Molded Like A Monster” was recognized with the 2021 ECMA Video of the Year Award and the MusicNL Ron Hynes Songwriter of the Year Award.

RPM Challenge NL
Thank you to our 2020 NL RPM Challenge sponsors:City of St. John's, MusicNL, Rocket Bakery, Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, Long & McQuade, Sound Symposium, Girls Rock NL, and Out of Earshot
St. John's NL Listening Party Kickoff • Sunday, March 8
We'll kick off the Newfoundland & Labrador listening party here at the Quidi Vidi Brewing Co. Taproom from 5pm until 8pm where we'll be kicking off the NLRPM radio stream, playing RPM music all March. No cover at the event!
THE RPM CHALLENGE
It is a cold, dark time in Newfoundland & Labrador. Although January has been defeated, limited daylight and weather continues to drive most citizens inside, where they eat chips and watch Netflix until May Two-Four.
Evading the dreaded winter doldrums, hundreds of inspired musicians have established a secret tradition in this remote ice world:
Record an album of original music in the month of February, just for fun.
The RPM Challenge — a creative challenge to anyone to record an album of original music in the month of February — has turned into a big deal in our province. Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the biggest turnouts for this annual international event, averaging more than 100 albums from the province every year. Why so successful? It's not a contest, it's free, and it's open to anyone.
More than 1,000 Newfoundland & Labrador albums have been recorded as part of the annual challenge.
Sign up at the international site at www.rpmchallenge.com
WANT TO HEAR RPM ALBUMS?
More than 1,000 albums from NL have been recorded so far, and many of them are online. Click here to spin the RPM Album Roulette wheel for a listen.
“THIS ALBUM WOULD ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF IT WEREN’T FOR THE PRESSURE OF THE CHALLENGE. THANKS TO MY UNFORTUNATE NATURE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO LET GO OF IMPERFECTIONS, I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO RELEASE AN ALBUM BEFORE, EVEN WITHOUT A DEADLINE.” - Laura Jean Fraser, Borealis Prize nominee
“FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER WRITTEN OR RECORDED THEIR OWN MUSIC IT CAN BE A VERY EMPOWERING, THRILLING EXPERIENCE, AND IN SOME CASES RPM HAS BEEN A GATEWAY INTO PARTICIPATING IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY BEYOND THE CHALLENGE” — Mathias Kom of The Burning Hell
“I THINK THE CAMARADERIE OF HAVING SO MANY OF YOUR PEERS CHUGGING ALONG IN THE CHALLENGE WITH YOU HELPS SPUR YOU ON.” - Danielle Hamel of It Could Be Franky, MusicNL winner
“RECORDING TEN SONGS IN THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR JUST SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT WHEN YOU KNOW THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DOING IT IN THEIR OWN LITTLE HOME BASE, IT MAKES YOU REALIZE THAT IT’S NOT JUST SOME PIPE DREAM.”  - Bekah Sims

Music Monday - Brianna Gosse Edition
Tumblr media
Brianna Gosse is a singer-songwriter from Newfoundland and Labrador. She has quite an array of experience from touring Newfoundland to opening for other artists right across Canada.  Her voice is breathtaking, and it makes you smile from the moment she opens her mouth. Her debut album AERA has even been recognized with award nominations and wins from MusicNL and the East Coast Music Awards.
While looking her up, I came across this video from Destination St. John’s with her song Feeling, Up, Up, Up! It’s a fun song that shows some familiar faces and places from St. John’s.
vimeo
It’s a catchy tune, and the video will make you want to visit Newfoundland ASAP.
-Keep Dancing, Ashley B
