It's important to remember that, just because the newer generations were getting absolutely slammed with muscle, doesn't mean the niches of particular interests faded into the darkness in exchange for working out and chugging supplements. Everyone always finds time for what they love, and those with the parents that had extensive comic book collections (mint condition, mind you) and movie libraries taking up a whole shelf of the TV stand bookcase were donned with the love for superhero culture just like generations prior.
Comic-Con was quickly replaced with a more all-encompassing "Costume-Con". There would still be competitions held at Costume-Con for best costume, look-alike, etc., featuring much more breadth of topics, but they just had to account for everyone being... a hell of a lot more swole.
Funnily enough, it started being the case that the superheroes just started being associated with more muscle by standard, drawings and new publications gradually stacking them up in weight classes until they started matching those that adored them in the nation of Adonis.

It’s like Murphy’s Law:  just when New York City is going through its coldest snap in a decade, the furnace in Nick Amaro’s house decides to die.
Any other time, he’d suffer through it.  He lives alone in the house now that Maria and Zara have moved to D.C., so he only has to worry about himself.  Any other time, he’d wrap himself in layers and tough it out until morning when a repair person can come.
It’s dangerously cold though.  The space heaters he has barely touch the cold, and he moves them into the basement anyway to try and salvage the pipes, to keep them from bursting.
There’s no other alternative, then.  He calls his partner.  You’ve always had his back, and you’ve always extended the offer for anything he needs.
Tonight, on the coldest night of the year in New York City, what he needs is a warm bed.  Or at least a warm apartment.

He gets the former, not the latter.
“Look, the couch is comfortable but it’s cold as hell in here,” you explain.  You rub the back of your neck, apologetic.  Embarrassed, maybe.  
“So?”
“So it’s better if we bunk up for the night.  That okay with you?”
“We’ve shared a bed before.  Remember when we were stuck in Newark?”
You grin at him.  “Yeah, asshole, and you complained to everyone that I snored.”
“You did snore.”
You huff at him.  Cross your arms.  “Didn’t.”
“Snored like a bear.  Snored like a muscle car.  Snored like—”
“You’re being awfully rude to the only person standing between you and hypothermia, buddy,” you interject, your grin turning sly.  “Unless you want to call Munch.  I bet he’s a champion cuddler.”
Nick holds up his hands in surrender.  “Alright, fine.  You didn’t snore.  You sleep like a dainty little princess.”
“Damn straight, guapo.”  You chuck him on the shoulder, then tilt your head in the direction of your bedroom.  “Get cleaned up.  Make yourself at home.”

Make yourself at home.
He doesn’t, not really, not at first.  At home, he sprawls in his bed, but in your bed, he tries to be respectful.  Keeps to his side, keeps his arms and legs to himself.
But fuck if it isn’t still cold, even with your apartment building’s functional furnace.  Even with the small space heater you have set in the bedroom to help supplement the heat.  Even in his flannel pajama pants, Henley shirt, thick socks.  There’s a thick layer of frost on your window.  The wind outside shrieks, howls.  It makes the night seem even darker and colder.
He can’t help himself when he shivers.  Every shift in bed presses him against a new cold spot, and it takes all of his strength to not let his teeth chatter together.
You, though?  You seem…okay.  
You also notice his shivering.
“Want me to cuddle with you?” you ask.
He turns his head in the darkness, can just make out the shape of you beside him.  “How are you not cold?”
“Oh, I am.  Just not as cold as you.”
“Still…”
“C’mere.”  He feels you shift beside him, then feels your hand on him.  Turning him towards you, and then the warm embrace of your arms around him.  You rub his back briskly, then tuck the covers more firmly around him.  Hardly a manly moment for him, but Nick finds he doesn’t mind being babied a little bit, at least by you.  Of relinquishing control and letting you gently manhandle him to warm him up.
It does the trick.  Within a moment, his shivering stops, and a moment after that, the final bit of chill leaves his bones.  Between the two of you—you the warmer one—the bed is a cozy little haven on the coldest night in Nick’s recent memory.
“Better?” you ask, and you drop your voice low because he’s right there, but it comes out unintentionally sultry, nearly sexy.  
“Yeah,” he replies, and his near-whisper sounds sultry too.
“Why are we talking to each other like we’re phone sex line operators?” you ask in that same low, sexy voice, and it startles a laugh out of him, which makes you chuckle too.
He doesn’t answer, but he asks (in a more normal tone, he hopes), “why aren’t you colder?”
“Genetics.  My grandma was from Norway.”
Nick smiles in the darkness.  “So you’re built for this sort of weather.”
“It’s the Viking blood.”
He reaches out, wraps a comfortable arm around you and pulls you closer.  “I appreciate you looking out for me.”
“Anytime, partner.”

Nick survives the night.  He wakes up once in the dead of night to use the bathroom, and it’s torture to pull himself from the cocoon of your bed.  He dashes to the bathroom, shivering the whole time, then dashes back to your bedroom, practically diving under the covers.
He doesn’t wake you, but the way you reach for him in your sleep, the displeased grumble you make until you have your arms back around him…it makes something tight go loose and lax in his chest, an unfurling that’s been threatening for a long while now.
When you start to snore a moment later, he only smiles and holds you a little tighter.
When he falls asleep, the last cognizant thought is how lucky he is to have found a warm place to stay for the night, in the arms of his partner and closest friend.
And when he wakes before you in the morning, the rosy sunrise casting your sleep-rumpled features in a soft light, his first thought is how lucky he is to have found a warm place to land after his divorce, because he recognizes the unfurling in his chest finally—the first sign of spring, of warmer weather.  The beginning thaw brought on by love.

Patrol dogs are terrorizing and mauling prisoners inside the United States
Many men were prone or shackled when the dogs attacked. Several men said officers shouted racial slurs as dogs bit into their flesh.
In May 2004, then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld addressed Congress. The abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib "was inconsistent with the values of our nation," Rumsfeld said. "It was certainly fundamentally un-American." Yet the use of attack-trained dogs at Abu Ghraib appears to have been imported from the United States. A 2005 report from the Department of Justice's inspector general scrutinized the private contractors who helped to build and run Abu Ghraib, detailing the backgrounds of the eight corrections experts who selected the site, oversaw the rebuilding of the prison, and trained staff at Abu Ghraib: Lane McCotter, Gary DeLand, Terry Bartlett, Richard Billings, Larry DuBois, John Armstrong, Terry Stewart, and Charles Ryan. Each had been a high-level state prison administrator or corrections commissioner before arriving in Baghdad. All eight, Insider has found, previously started, expanded, or administered programs at US prisons that authorized the use of dogs to attack and intimidate incarcerated people. McCotter in New Mexico and Utah; DeLand, Billings, and Bartlett in Utah; Ryan and Stewart in Arizona; DuBois in Massachusetts; and Armstrong in Connecticut. Two decades after the human-rights abuses unfolded at Abu Ghraib, almost all of these state prison systems continue to use unmuzzled attack-trained dogs. Insider has identified 12 states that authorize their use against people in state custody. At least 23 prisons in eight states have deployed attack-trained dogs on prisoners in recent years — Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Virginia. Over the past six years, hundreds of incarcerated people have been bitten or mauled. Human Rights Watch researchers wrote, in 2006, that they were unaware of a single other prison system in the world that used dogs to attack people in the confined space of a cell.

Police departments have long employed trained attack dogs to supplement the range and speed of officers in the field. But prison patrol dogs aren't deployed for chases; they are used inside the prison walls. In these tight, enclosed spaces, the aggressive barking and threat of attack terrorize people trapped inside razor-wire fences and cell doors. The use of dogs to attack people in the confined space of a prison cell has been described by Human Rights Watch as a "well-kept secret" — and a human-rights violation. The dogs' presence inside prisons, the organization found, "is intended to terrify and intimidate." Even witnessing a dog attack in close quarters is harrowing. One former Virginia corrections officer said watching a dog attack a person, hearing their screams and desperate pleas and seeing all that blood, was a "primal" experience and deeply traumatizing. "It's just not something you forget," he said. For those who are the intended target of the intimidation, witnessing a dog attack is devastating, multiple men told Insider. Many suffer nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and fear for weeks and months after seeing an attack. For the hundreds of men who are bitten or mauled themselves, the physical and emotional impact can last for years. Through public-records requests, court documents, medical records, and interviews with dozens of bite victims, Insider documented at least 295 incidents where attack-trained dogs bit incarcerated people over the six years from 2017 to 2022. Insider identified one attack in Connecticut, to break up a fight in 2020; three in Massachusetts, all in the context of forced cell extractions, in 2020; five in Indiana; 15 in Arizona; and 271 attacks in Virginia. The locations of the bites indicate that many of the men may have been prone when they were attacked; a 2006 study suggested that bites to the head, neck, and torso are more likely when the target is on the ground, hiding, or partially restrained. Several men described being cuffed or compliant, spread-eagled on the ground, when attacked; one incident report from July 2022 documents that a man in a Virginia facility called Sussex II State Prison was attacked by a patrol dog after he'd been wrestled into leg irons.

The severity of the wounds caused by the attacks betrays the tremendous force the dogs can wield. Medical records obtained by Insider contain evidence of deep puncture wounds, lacerations with torn edges, and crush injuries in which muscle, nerves, and bones were damaged from the pressure of the dog's jaw. A study using data from the 1980s and 1990s in Los Angeles found bites from attack-trained dogs were more medically serious than bites from domestic pet dogs. The authors found people bitten by trained law-enforcement dogs were more likely to be hospitalized and require surgeries for skin grafts or tendon and arterial repairs. Dog mouths are also loaded with bacteria. A 1994 dog-bite study found a correlation between the depth of the bite and an increased risk of developing serious infections. In at least 18 incidents, bite victims in Virginia were wounded so severely by attack-trained dogs that they were transferred to nearby hospitals to be treated for crush injuries, extensive muscle and tissue damage, or septic infections. Others were found to have symptoms of trauma.

In response to Insider's findings, a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry said the department was under new leadership and would be reviewing all of its policies and practices, including its use of dogs.  Other departments defended their current protocols. The Indiana Department of Correction said all its dogs were trained "using the appropriate K9 industry standards." The Delaware Department of Correction said department dogs "assist officers in meeting their safety and security mission." A spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Corrections said the department's use of patrol dogs was governed by operation procedures authorized by Virginia law.

An attack dog's bite is powerful enough to puncture sheet metal. On people, the bites rend skin and muscle. Department patrol dogs are trained to bite once and hold to minimize flesh tears and lacerations. However, in nearly 30% of the bite reports Insider analyzed, Virginia patrol dogs bit more than once or "readjusted" their bites to different body parts in response to a victim fighting or thrashing in pain. The dogs bit arms and legs most commonly but also bit stomachs, faces, hands, feet, hips, shoulders, and genitals. In at least 15 cases over the past six years, Virginia dogs mauled people all over their bodies, biting them three, four, or even six times and leaving wounds on their arms, legs, shoulders, faces, chests, and hands.

"Today they have taken off the white sheet and put on police uniforms and traded in the bloodhounds for police dogs." After the brutal crackdown on people protesting the killing of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a half a century later, the Department of Justice investigated the Ferguson Police Department and found a range of civil-rights abuses. These included the excessive use of dogs to attack people, including children, in routine police encounters. In every case where racial information was available, Ferguson police officers had sicced their dogs on Black people.

"Yuzuru Hanyu: Reminiscing about the 'culmination' of the Beijing Olympics and a behind-the-scenes look at his 4A challenge with Ajinomoto VP Kurihara Hidefumi / Interview 1"
Hanyu has walked a solitary path through three Olympic Games, exploring nutrition and refining both his mind and body. In the 2014 Sochi Olympics, he became the first Asian male skater to win gold. At the PyeongChang Games in 2018, he became the first man in 66 years to win consecutive gold medals. In Beijing in 2022, he made Olympic history by becoming the first to be certified with a quadruple axel. Alongside him, providing support, were Kurihara Hidefumi and the team from Ajinomoto's Victory Project (VP).
Kurihara: Someone told me that there was an athlete who was having some concerns about nutrition, body building, and health. That’s when I was introduced to Hanyu.
Hanyu: That’s right. It was before Sochi... before that. I was 17.
It was the end of April 2012. It was the summer after he had moved from Sendai to Toronto, Canada. At the time, he was a second-year high school student with no interest in food at all.
Kurihara: The first thing he told me was, "I don't really like to eat."
Hanyu: I don't have a strong stomach to begin with, so sometimes I can eat and sometimes I can't. It was right after I'd gone to Canada, and there were times when the local ingredients and cuisines "suited me" and "didn't suit me." In that situation, we started by thinking about what was easy to eat, then how and when to take in the nutrients. When I couldn't eat, I was taught a lot, such as how to eat supplements. In our sport, we need to restrict ourselves (for jumping), and I was afraid of my body becoming heavy. I had a strong image of food as a diet rather than nutrition (intake).
Ajinomoto has been supporting the Japanese national team since 2003, helping athletes with "food and amino acids." This year marked the 22nd anniversary of their partnership with the Olympics, starting from the 2004 Athens Games to the Paris 2024 Games. Hanyu has been receiving "exclusive" support from them for over 10 years in winter figure skating.
Kurihara: Until Sochi, we basically focused only on physical and mental “health” and took the step of “eating three well-balanced meals every day.  Figure skating in particular is a competition in which you express your emotions and worldview to judges and spectators through your performance. So, you absolutely had to be mentally healthy as well.
Hanyu: Leading up to Pyeongchang, the themes shifted to "weight" and "activity level." When did you start that?
Kurihara: It was two years after Sochi. While managing weight and body composition, I quantified daily training volume and intensity as 'load (stress)' and monitored changes in condition over time, aligning it with performance.
"Yuzuru Hanyu: The Dream of Achieving the Unprecedented Quadruple Axel... The Key Is 'Tendon Reflex,' Along with Carb Restriction and Pressure Training / Interview 2"
Hanyu has won every title on the ice, including the six major titles at world championships known as the Super Slam, but his final dream in competition was to successfully complete a quadruple axel.
Hanyu: In terms of nutritional management, the approach leading up to the PyeongChang Olympics became the basis. Around the ages of 23 or 24, after winning two consecutive gold medals, I started saying, 'I don’t think I like feeling heavy.' Like a marathon, it’s a sport where the damage to the internal organs is greater due to constant shaking, so I also took care of my internal organs (to prevent food from remaining in my stomach). We also discussed whether it would be better to stay at the weight when I was performing at my best, or whether it would be better to build up muscle strength, as I was aiming for a quadruple axel.
Kurihara: I could tell at a glance that you had trained your legs a lot before the Beijing Olympics, such as squats to strengthen the hamstrings (back of the thighs), so I was surprised and you said, “You can tell? But…” And then you added, "The muscle strength for jumping is looking good. Now it’s all about the tendons." I was just about to say that the key to jumping a 4A is "tendon reflexes." Apparently, you had been thinking the same thing.
Hanyu: In terms of global trends, research is progressing rapidly and some things are being scientifically proven.
"Tendons" connect muscles and bones and act like springs, storing and reusing elastic energy. To use this tendon reflex to jump the quadruple Axel, Hanyu actively took amino acids and worked to strengthen his body in preparation for the Beijing Olympics. This moment was one of synergy between Hanyu’s deep understanding of body mechanics and Kurihara’s suggestions.
Hanyu laughed, saying, "I’ve been brainwashed by Kurihara," and added, "I’m really hungry to know ‘how can I improve.’ My own knowledge was never enough. That’s why I asked Kurihara and also did my own research. We shared everything, and it helped us refine things."
On June 1, 2021, before the Beijing Olympic season began, he held an online meeting with his trainer. Everything was aimed for the success of the quadruple Axel.
Kurihara: We discussed everything from tendon reflex to intense glycolytic training and aerobic training. I also developed a new amino acid that makes the tendons healthier, so I designed my training with the hypothesis that it would definitely benefit the 4A.
Hanyu: There was interval training, low-carb (sugar restriction) to pressure (blood flow restriction) training and heart rate monitoring, and both explosive and endurance training. By then, it was no longer just about 'health'; the foundation was already laid, and everything was built on top of that. (The Beijing Olympics) was the culmination of it all.

"Life isn't all about being rewarded. But I’m happy now even though I wasn’t rewarded."
Such was the famous quote that emerged from Hanyu at the Beijing Olympics. He ended up in 4th place. He was struck by bad luck when his quadruple Salchow was blocked by a hole in the ice. Although he missed out on a medal in his third consecutive Olympics with a surprising 8th place finish in the short program, his challenge to focus all his energy on the men’s free skate on February 10, 2022, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, remains a vivid moment. The world’s first certified "4A" (quadruple Axel) was etched into Olympic history.
Kurihara: There’s something I’ve really wanted to ask you. The 4A was officially certified in Beijing… but it was still a disappointing result. Yet, you still contacted me for the exhibition (in 10 days), saying, "Kuri-san, I’ll gather energy again" and "I’ll do it." I think it was 3 or 4 days after the free skate. How did you feel during that process of replenishing energy and glycogen in the days that followed?
Hanyu: Honestly, I was really disappointed with my performance. Of course, I didn’t plan to do the 4A, but while some people see exhibitions as a kind of festival, for me it’s a place to showcase the qualities of an athlete. I thought that "all impressions would be decided" by how well I could show myself there. I was feeling down, and I thought to myself, "Why did I sprain my ankle again?" (He injured his right ankle before the free skate). But I couldn’t let my guard down. I thought, "I'll give it my best until the very last performance."
Kurihara: I was watching it on TV in the cafeteria of the athlete's village, and I was crying my eyes out. It was the best performance. It’s a moment I will never forget in my life, and I absolutely wanted to tell you that.
Even now, after turning professional and successfully performing the first-ever solo ice shows, that determination has not changed.
Hanyu: Even now, I’m still in that same mindset. How can I deliver the best performance until the very last moment? I’ve continued along that path. My right ankle was really hurting, but more than that, I wanted to show something amazing. Athletes compete in competitions with the support of so many people, including Kuri-san. In a way, I wished I could have given everything in the free skate, but I couldn’t, and it was frustrating. So, I wanted to put everything into the exhibition. I wanted to repay everyone who’s supported me by showing my best every time and producing results. That was both the pressure and a driving force for me.

At the Beijing Olympics, Kurihara, who supported the entire Team Japan, entered the athlete village and worked with a chef based outside the village to provide Hanyu with 'victory meals.' He worked hard to maintain and even increase his lean body mass. Similar to the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, where the men's events were scheduled in the morning, Hanyu was required to wake up around 4 a.m., and Kurihara carefully coordinated the schedule with him.
Hanyu: The Olympics have a different schedule compared to regular competitions, so for example, there’s a routine for athletes, like 'meals must be eaten a certain number of hours before.' But often, it's not possible to follow that. We had many discussions about things like 'Should we have a snack here?' and other details.
Kurihara: We even went as far as discussing areas close to the science behind it in detail. All that’s left was to ensure that you were sent out onto the ice in the best shape. That was my role.
Hanyu: In figure skating, I was basically the only one at competitions (with exclusive support), so I think the tension while waiting for the results must have been different. It was always like, "I did what I had to do, now all I can do is wait" (laughs). I probably seemed "troublesome," but I learned a lot. I didn’t even know how many calories were in a bowl of rice, but they helped build the foundation for me to think about physical conditioning.
On the other hand, the insights gained from this support were fully accumulated on Ajinomoto’s side.
Hanyu: Every week, I would submit data on my training load and body composition and combine it with my activities to assess how my condition was. I think it probably became a part of the research as well. Did the formula match the intensity that an athlete actually feels? Even though I was only 19, I was already an Olympic gold medalist. So, over the course of more than 10 years, I think they conducted research using me as a base, examining body composition, activity levels, and calorie consumption.
After turning professional, he continues to shine in unprecedented ice shows, performing alone for over 90 minutes. His national tour, announced on October 4th, will begin on December 7th, the day he turns 30. He will once again prove his evolution. Kurihara Hidefumi (栗原秀文) Born May 2, 1976, in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo. He devoted himself to baseball from elementary school until graduating from Rikkyo University. He joined Ajinomoto in 1999, working in sales and the "Amino Vital" division, before becoming involved in the "Victory Project" (VP) in 2004. His failure to properly manage his conditioning during his university days, when he aspired to be a professional baseball player, became the driving force behind his work in supporting athletes. He is now considered the engine of the VP. For the 2024 Paris Olympics, he was in charge of supporting athletes including the judo siblings Abe, Tashiro Miku, and Tatsuru Saito, as well as the swimming delegation.
Ajinomoto Co., Inc. "Victory Project" Launched in 2003 in collaboration with the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), the "Victory Project" is a nutritional and dietary support initiative for the Japanese national team. RDA – The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D is 600 international units (15 mcg) daily for adults through age 70 years and for children 1 to 18 years of age. For adults 71 years and older, 800 international units (20 mcg) daily is recommended for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Vitamin D intake and effective sun exposure are often inadequate in older adults. In older adults, particularly those with osteoporosis, we suggest supplementation with vitamin D. We administer 600 to 800 international units daily.
●Causes of vitamin D deficiency and resistance – Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by unusually low sun exposure combined with lack of vitamin D-fortified foods or malabsorption. Alternatively, impaired hydroxylation of vitamin D in liver or kidney can prevent metabolism into the physiologically active form. Rarely, genetic defects may cause the end organs to be unresponsive to vitamin D, as in hereditary vitamin D-resistant rickets (HVDRR).
●Vitamin D intoxication – Vitamin D intoxication generally occurs after inappropriate use of vitamin D preparations. Prolonged exposure of the skin to sunlight does not produce toxic amounts of vitamin D3, due to photoconversion of previtamin D3 and vitamin D3 to inactive metabolites. Symptoms of acute intoxication are due to hypercalcemia and include confusion, polyuria, polydipsia, anorexia, vomiting, and muscle weakness. Long-term intoxication can cause bone demineralization and pain. In children, the hypercalcemia can cause brain injury.
●Tolerable upper intake level – The Institute of Medicine (IOM, now called the National Academy of Medicine [NAM]) has defined the "tolerable upper intake level" (UL) for vitamin D as 100 mcg (4000 international units) daily for healthy adults and children 9 to 18 years (table 1). The General Secretary of the Worker's Party of Korea and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jung Un gave a speech Thursday which was reported in the DPRK's official news outlet, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
In the speech, Comrade Kim made the announcement of the new Constitutional amendment which enshrines the DPRK leader's Nuclear Policy into the very framework of the nation:
"Today the strategic strength of our state, the nuclear war deterrent, is being remarkably bolstered and steadily strengthened to the extent incomparably greater than the past decades."
"The major tasks of the Five-Year-Plan for the Development of the Defense Science and Weapons System have been successfully carried out and a radical leap was made in the development and introduction of powerful nuclear attack means and new strategic weapon system of our own style. Thus, we demonstrated the reliability of the nuclear strategic force of our Republic to the whole world, exposing the hostile forces to insurmountable threat and striking terror in their hearts."
"This eye-opening success, which actually shows great military muscle of the Republic fully equipped with strong and overwhelming defensive and offensive capabilities, clearly and definitively proves the courage and decisive action ability of the DPRK not to tolerate any acts of violating its sovereignty and right to existence."
