The glitz and gold of the Astoria was far from what Jamie would’ve considered a party for the citizens of Gravewood. It was more of a retreat from reality. A small moment in time where anyone could pretend to be in another tax bracket. Jamie wasn’t so deluded to get comfortable in luxury when he’d learned an early lesson from Cinderella that the clock always struck twelve. 

Still, free was free and he was too far shameless to not capitalize on contraband. The refreshments table became his home as he picked through the offerings like a fancy connoisseur of fine party junkfood. Deviled eggs, pumpkin crostinis, sugar cookies, he crunched through a full-sized chocolate bar in one hand while sipping jungle juice in a wine glass. 

Reaching for what looked like the last sausage roll dressed up like a mummy, he brushed knuckles with another party-goer who looked to have the same idea as he. 

“Fuck off,” he said, swatting their hand aside and snatching the lone mummydog. Years of fighting with his siblings had taught him the rules of sniping food and he quickly shoved it into his mouth.

He glared at the other, cheeks pillowed with pastry before he realized who it was and swallowed the mouthful whole.

“Fancy seeing you here,” he said, eyeing the elaborate garb donning Leo’s body. If he could’ve been more scorned, he would’ve, but the girl had Brutus outnumbered with how many knives she’d stuck into his back lately. “Don’t parties violate your terms of parole? Or have you licked Daddy’s boots enough to be granted pardon?”

gender questions, reprise

I want to write a correction for the earlier post.

This is a problem. Every time I have a firm opinion about myself, I need to correct it later. This is why we can’t have firm opinions (are firm opinions “nice things?”).

It feels like affectation when I try to describe this, so I mostly do not.

It is not a total change, but only subtle and dismissible, but I feel the change settle in over maybe a couple of hours. It is different from switching, which tends to be rudely abrupt.

I feel the change and I adapt to it. Sometimes I wait for a change before I begin a task, because although I am always capable, it can call for less affectation.

Affectation. Affectation. This is it. Affectation.

I feel like parts of who/what I am wander in and out of being affectation, throughout the day, at times.

At this moment, I feel like gender questions are only affectation. And I do not, absolutely do not, find male bodies disgusting. (I am still frustrated with my allergy to male bodies, but for entirely different reasons.)

This is not a cut-and-dried case of this part versus that part. I am still me, same as I was when I wrote earlier. It is just this little bit of what I am that is now different.

This is what I tried to describe of fusion as being “a rather boisterous grouping of parts,” however long ago that was. We are fused. We are not integrated.

But maybe we are a stretch of the definition of fusion.

Were it not for the unfused part, I would be less sure we were fused. Having the unfused part for comparison, I can see that the two are vastly different states.

As far as femininity goes, I know the feeling clearly, but I do not feel it in this moment. If I need to speak on the subject with sincerity, I need to slide back into it. In this moment, it is affectation. Based on my feelings right now, it is fake. I cannot explain why I would want to fake such a thing, but it does feel fake. I will not fake-claim myself because I know what I was feeling this morning and it was pure truth.

I avoid firm opinions and drastic life choices because I will regret it in an hour.
