post-cotbp. jack and james end up stuck in like. something. a cave system? a jungle temple? idk. something where they are trapped inside and their respective crews outside. gasp it's the 'forced to work together' trope !! double gasp maybe there's a tentive truce made between the Dauntless and the Pearl to rescue their respective commodore/captain. ofc during the whole time there's the underscoring knowledge of 'i will have to turn this man in/this guy's gonna turn me in' so at the end of the adventure jack ofc gives them all the slip and the Pearl takes off, with James, cursing wildly, giving chase

I will always be of the opinion that every story, RPG campaign or fanfic needs these two guys or their setting-appropriate equivalents in order to really work.

They've existed for the entirety of human history and always will because at some point a character is going to need to go somewhere they shouldn't. And wherever that might be, there they are.

Sometimes there's only one of them. Sometimes there's more than two of them. Sometimes you are them. Sometimes they're called Nobby Nobbs and Fred Colon. But they're always out there somewhere.

Slot them in right next to "the characters have to dress up and go to a big formal party" for maximum comfort.

There weren’t many Will was ever surprised to see.  A navy man turned pirate shouldn’t have been one of them considering James had gone a similar path.  But the commodore at least had been competent.  Murtogg and Mullroy never struck him as particularly brave or put together.  Maybe that had changed.  Piracy did strange things to people.  He still stared a bit, brows drawn from his position against the Queen Anne’s railing.  “No, you’re alive.”  He’d have felt it otherwise.  Somehow the sentinel had survived the undead, a maelstrom and working under Barbossa.  If Will had been in different circumstances, he may have felt sorry for the man.  “I know.  It’s his.”  A body in the water below, still bleeding sluggishly not too far from where he’d risen the Dutchman.  “I honestly didn’t expect you to make it this far.  Last I saw, you were...on the Pearl, were you not?  You’d abandoned your post and changed sides I suspect.”

I still love how the two men from Port Royal who tried keeping Jack from the ships ended up becoming pirates 😂
