The Hayloft
Through all the pleasant meadow-side The grass grew shoulder-high, Till the shining scythes went far and wide And cut it down to dry.
Those green and sweetly smelling crops They led in waggons home; And they piled them here in mountain tops For mountaineers to roam.
Here is Mount Clear, Mount Rusty-Nail, Mount Eagle and Mount High;â The mice that in these mountains dwell, No happier are than I!
Oh, what a joy to clamber there, Oh, what a place for play, With the sweet, the dim, the dusty air, The happy hills of hay! by Robert Louis Stevenson

â Previous Chapter
Vladimir Harkonnen was wrong. His nephewâs mood is anything but entertaining tonight.
It amazes him how a man in his twenties, who has defeated Paul Artreides, the false messiah of Arrakis, can still act like a boy just hitting puberty when a woman isnât groveling at his feet. Feyd-Rautha refuses to deliver the annual speech he is supposed to give on the grand balcony, so the undulating mass of merrymakers on the hundred meter wide avenue is left waiting. Thankfully, with spice being dealt shamelessly among the hundreds of thousands, the celebration will soon turn into orgy and bloodbath alike, and the absence of Giedi Primeâs beloved na-Baron will be swiftly forgotten.
Albeit now dressed in a traditional, sharp-cut suit made of thick, synthetic fibers, Feyd-Rautha's face is the same as in the arena, now battling a foe whose main attack is absence.
It is two hours into the banquet when she finally enters and immediately becomes the brightest star in the obsidian colored banquet hall. And it is not due to her radiant personality, though that too is not to be underestimated. Itâs because of the golden fabric that flows off her hips and chest like the molten gold and orange that a fiery alien sun might disgorge in a coronal mass ejection.
While even the esteemed guests from other Houses have chosen to match their attire somewhat to House Harkonnen by choosing rich, dark colors like mulberry and midnight blue, she has gone for the most provocative opposite, shimmering like glossy amber. Instead of a preserved mosquito however, her amber cocoon seals a jealous animal that scowls at Feyd-Rautha as soon as his frenetic eyes target her from across the hall.
Life seems to return to Vladimirâs sulking nephew and his icy rage turns into kindling enthusiasm. Finally he can make his move. Nothing is worse than being ignored.
Strings start playing, each sound a low vibration in their ear drums and under the soles of their feet. The na-Baron and his partner of choice are expected to do the first steps on the shiny parquet. Expectantly, he raises his chin and she would like nothing more than to wrap her arms around his striking figure, cup his jaws that, despite casting a distinct shadow down his neck, have a roundness to their shape that she wants to kiss over and over.
Feyd had wanted her to dance with him. Here she is. Perfectly punctual. All he needs to do is walk over and ask her, but in his eyes, having left him waiting is her first move. So asking another concubine to dance is his.
He thinks he's being clever and proudly watches her jaws clench and shoulders stiffen. The anger in her eyes tastes better than any meal he's had today - until she looks away. She isn't supposed to look away.
As long as the strings play the first piece, Feyd dances with a total of three of his concubines. During and after each dance, his piercing gaze latches onto her like spearguns fired from seething tar, but he only meets the back of her head, and after a while not even that. A supermassive black hole obscures his view.
Baron Harkonnen floats to the woman in yellow and activates a barely used switch on his control panel. His massive frame carefully lowers itself, so he is almost on the ground and she may converse with his face without putting a strain on her neck.
âYou missed the main course,â the Baron informs her and she is quite aware. For the main course, she would have been expected to occupy the seat on the na-Baronâs left while his uncle as the head of House Harkonnen sits on Feydâs right.
âWhat a shame. I suppose I did catch a migraine in the end.â
âLady Metulli sat at FeydâS side instead. I was under the impression she couldnât quite stomach his appetite.â
The woman in the bright dress nods. She is well aware of Feydâs table manners. Being his uncleâs nephew, he categorically rejects cutlery and prefers to dig into raw meats with his hands and suckle blood and grease off his fingers - or make her do it. Luckily, she wasnât there to see Lady Metulli purse her lips around Feydâs fingers.
With rumbling laughter, the Baron adds: âShe didnât want the pill I offered either.â
âWhat sort of pill was it?â
âAnti nausea, of course.â
âAnd where is Lady Metulli now?â She must have thought Baron Harkonnen was trying to slip her a poison pill.
âThrowing up in the bathroom.â
At that, her mouth twitches and then she begins to cackle. The Baronâs gravelly breath sends plumes of vapor from his hookah into the air and she nearly chokes on it, but the coughing somehow only amplifies her laughter. Bystanders keep a wary distance to the strange duo.Â
Baron Harkonnen snaps his fingers and a servant scurries to the remaining buffet which was moved to a long, sleek table along the side of the hall. They return with a black metal bowl and one red apple. The woman happily accepts the apple and imagines it's Feyd-Rautha's balls when she violently bites a piece out of it.
In her radiant dress, she occupies the center of the banquet hall like a luminary and Baron Harkonnen is her colossal floating satellite who drags a train of black matter after himself in the shape of his overlong robes.
Currently, Feyd-Rautha is a pale, icy asteroid who bristles in the periphery of these two peculiar celestial bodies, orbiting them at a safe distance. His dance partners have been discarded and the designated parquet is swarmed by guests who are supposed to be celebrating his birthday. But as the day draws to a close, praise and attention slip through his fingers like slippery blade handles. Defenseless, he stands at the edge of the dance floor and feels very alone.
Feyd doesn't know what they're talking about, but he has never wanted to gut his uncle more than right now.
âYou should try one of the livers.â Vladimir offers her from his bowl.
âYou know I donât eat human livers.â The nonchalance with which she speaks to Baron Harkonnen makes a nearby representative from House Ginaz snap the stem of their glass.
The Baron hums. If with approval or disapproval, she canât tell, but he plunges his own hand back into the slippery bowl and fishes a liver out.Â
Good for her, that she refused. Feyd's jaw flexes under bone-white skin, imagining all the ways he would break her fingers and his uncle's. Feyd would rather draw a much closer orbit around his favorite concubine, but he will not allow her to let him flare up and burn down with humiliation so publicly.
âIt looks like my dear nephew is still waiting for a birthday gift from you.â The Baron glances over to his chosen heir and feels almost sorry for him.
âAnd he can wait until the twelfth of never,â she spits.
A small, inky smile takes shape amid the Baronâs doughy face. She is a Harkonnen if he has ever seen one. If Harkonnen had hair and an aversion to human flesh. Furiously, she sinks her teeth into the red apple and juice dribbles down her chin, making her a sightlier twin of the Baron whose many chins sport a trail of grease.
She would make a good niece in law.
Night rolls in and the smoggy sky over Giedi Prime is black like ink. No starlight makes it through the thick atmosphere. The buffets have been swept empty by Harkonnen gluttony and the hall waits for one last thing, the finale of Feyd-Rautha's holy birthday.
A gasp sweeps through the guests when the walls slide up into the ceiling and a gust of warm wind seizes them, making skirts rustle and hair waft. Avidly, they spill past the sleek concrete pillars and out on the extended balcony. The putrid stench of Giedi Primeâs industrial landscape rolls into the air-conditioned banquet hall.
It is exactly one hour before midnight when the first firework whistles into the sky, pulling a tail of silvery particles, and explodes with a low bang that eerily echoes off pyramids and power plants.
She too, slowly advances towards the balcony, her attention snared by the extraterrestrial spectacle. The fireworks come in dozens, then in hundreds, blossoming colorlessly in the sky like parasitic cells under a microscope. They're beautiful.
A gasp escapes her mouth, unheard over the booming fireworks, when two wiry arms capture her from behind and pull her against a solid chest. What took him so long? Her belly flips with butterflies as Feyd-Rautha abducts her unnoticed from the celebration, pulling her back back back until the grand view over Giedi Prime vanishes from their view and the festive banquet hall is replaced by corridors like black tunnels. Only the occasional flash of a firework lights up the path before them and the visage of the pale demon who drags her along.
This is not the concubine's corridor.
Hands against her ribs shove her into Feyd-Rauthaâs private chambers. Before her eyes can adjust to the darkness, his fingers are in her hair, tearing without care so the hairdo comes apart. âYou've ruined my birthday and you enjoyed it!â
âI didnât enjoy a single fucking second of this day!â Acting nonchalant only works when heâs not on her and all over her with violent hands and seething eyes, when the air doesnât smell like his perfume oil. Her chest heaves and she will not cry.
âThen I must have imagined you having the time of your life with my uncle.âÂ
She tries to jerk her head out of Feydâs grip, but he holds tight and she winces, her scalp stinging. âAt least he was nice to me.â
âPerhaps you should be with him then.â Feydâs jaw quivers.
âYour jealousy is ridiculous.â
âMy jealousy?!â
âWell Iâm jealous of the other women you fuck. Youâre jealous of me talking to your uncle!â The fireworks are nothing compared to their voices, booming like the occasional earthquakes that rattle Giedi Primeâs volcanic crust.
Feyd threateningly lifts a finger, dark eyes simmering. âI asked you to dance with me.â
âYes, after insulting our relationship.âÂ
He walks her deeper into his bed chamber, shaking his head as if to deny the allegations but he canât, not really. It isnât fair of her, he thinks. The na-Baron of Giedi Prime has many concubines. Itâs his birthright and politically profitable. That he has been bedding only one of them for almost a year concerns no one but him.
Her walk backwards is only halted when her thighs bump into the edge of his bed where they lay only two nights ago and she had felt special in his arms, on top of him, under the weight of his body. Now she only feels like a toy and sheâs not only sick of it, she also mentally canât keep going.
âYou are the center of the world, but who is the center of yours?â Her fingers curl into his thick suit jacket and he feels the little tremors in her muscles.
A lingering thought infests him, that her first assertion is a heretic belief, not a truth. The people in the avenues celebrate for the sake of it, the guests in the hall would dance and feast for any politically appropriate occasion. Perhaps his position at world's pivot is only one for show, where he is strung up as a puppet. His importance is the figure he represents, not the man he is.Â
Feyd would so love to be the center of someoneâs world.
His concubineâs face is angled upwards and the far echo of a firework sends a flash of silver over her features. âMaking me jealous will only push me away, you dumb creature.âÂ
Oh.
He does love her fury, and when she insults him, his heart thrums a little needier. But what he doesnât love is the note of tears that throttles her lovely voice. His jaws clench, fingers twitching against her scalp. He could throw her on the bed and punish her for the ruined day or kiss her and forgive her, but thereâs an ache in his stomach that makes him do neither of the two. âI just⊠Donât twist the facts!â
âMaybe you donât have a heart, but I do. I didnât want you to have it, but youââ She swallows as her voice cracks. âAnd now youâre chewing it apart with your heartless mouth.â The following shocks her, but it bursts like a weight off her chest. âBe with someone else! I donât want to be your concubine anymore.â
Feydâs heart (yes, he has one), drops into a void and he feels sick to his stomach, falling into the hole that gapes where the ground has been pulled from under his feet.
She tears away from him, hair slipping free, but Feyd catches her elbow. And as she turns back around, he viscerally drops on one knee.
âThen be my wife.â
The last firework explodes in the sky and they are left with a silence so quiet, one might just hear the universeâs heartbeat pulsing against the dome of the skies. A breeze wafts in and brushes her golden skirts against Feydâs bent knee and he waits, trembling. She canât say no. He would rather die a humiliating death in front of a million worshipers.
âYour answer?â
She knows, being a wife means nothing. Wives are why concubines exist. Wife is the ultimate empty title that has nothing to do with love, at least not among the Great Houses. Does it mean anything to him? Her mind swims with years and years of manipulation and forced assimilation and finally, the held-back tears spill over her cheeks.
âMy conditions,â she boldly speaks and takes a deep breath, not allowing herself to fall into mindless euphoria despite how madly her heart beats and her stomach flips with butterflies. With controlled leisureness, she sits down on the edge of Feydâs bed and nudges the tip of her shoe against the kneeling na-Baronâs sternum. âNo concubines. No pets. I will be your only one. I donât care which rotten cravings decay in your mind, I will be the one to fulfill them.â
Feyd's lips part and he draws in a quick breath. âYes,â he breathes and his heart lifts itself from the pit that had swallowed it and Feyd inches closer, head craned back. The free hand slides under her skirts, needily catching her ankle.
âThere is no need for anyone else. Tell me what you want me to do for you, Iâll do it.â
âI want you to watch the next time I fight.â Feydâs nose and cheek twitch as the memory of today sends a sliver of rage through his nerves. Within a heartâs beat, her hand curls around his jaws, thumb rubbing over the twitching muscle. âAnd I want you to accept my proposal,â he growls much more needily. Blood has rushed to his cock, making it strain against the suit trousers.
âFirst⊠Hand me your blade.â
A small, gravelly moan rolls over plush lips and he releases her elbow to unsheathe the kukri from its holster. She takes it with deft fingers and presses it against his willing throat, watching with satisfaction as his pointy Adamâs Apple jumps against the blade. âWhat are you doing, woman?â Feyd drawls, hips weakly rutting into the empty space between them, not angled right to hump her leg, though he'd like to.
âSwear that Iâll be your only.â
âI swear it.â Feyd drawls without hesitation, pupils blown wide. Agitated breath fans her arm. He can barely wait to consummate their betrothal, squirming like a fish ashore, held at armâs length by her will.
The clock ticks and Feyd-Rautha's birthday is nearly over. Pleadingly, he cranes his neck, shuffling on his knee. He is so eager to be devoted and brought to heel, when will she say yes?! âWill you be my wife? Please.â
A heavy breath and scrutiny in tearful eyes, then finally, she breaks into a watery smile. âYes, I will be your wife.â Happily, she sobs into the palm of her hand and the blade at his throat trembles. Feyd gives her no time to cry in peace and hauls her to the floor by the skirts.
The pair goes down on shiny tiles that reflect the golden material of her dress, barely gold anymore in the ambience of his dark chambers. Fragmented speckles of light dance across the floor as Feyd sifts through the layers until he has them bunched around her hips. Her thighs part willingly, latching around his narrow waist. She pulls close what belongs to her, making the na-Baron come flush with her pelvis.
Feyd claims her as frantically as she does him, calloused hands sliding along her waist to finally unwrap the birthday present sheâs denied him all day, the only thing that mattered.
âI hate this dress,â he purrs. âYou look like the wrong sun.âÂ
âCut it off me then.â She offers him his own blade, chest arching off the floor. âWould you rather have me wear black at our wedding?â Excitedly, her breath hitches.
âNo.â In fact, heâd be offended if she did. âIâd rather have you wear nothing and paint you black from the inside.â A flash of gold pervades the night when it reflects on the raised blade. A precise slash across her chest makes the bodice come undone between her breasts. The bite of metal misses her skin by a hairâs width. âHanding me back my blade⊠Did I teach you nothing?â Feyd purrs, sliding the blunt side over her breasts.
âI have my own.â Her breath hitches when her nipples pebble against the knife. Swiftly, she unsheathes her own blade from the strap around her hips under the skirts. The curved tip catches the button of Feydâs trousers and slices straight through it, cutting a new fly into the thick material. His freed cock bobs against the flat side of her blade, the tip grazing his taut balls in a fatal kiss.
Feyd-Rautha moans, falling over her body to palm at her breasts and slide his mouth against her throat. She doesnât have enough time to withdraw the blade from between his thighs and the way he whimpers tells her she has caught the delicate flesh. âFeyd, you idiot. Do you wish for me to dismember you before our wedding night?â
She pulls the blade away and seconds later, Feydâs cock grinds against her center, slicking himself up with her essence. The velvety head rests heavily on her belly as he grinds his balls against cunt, relishing the sting of the wound. Blood drips over her folds, tinting the slick of her arousal black.
Forgotten, her kukri clatters to the floor and one hand reaches for his cock, the other for the back of his thigh, urging him closer as she lines him up with her entrance, wet but unprepared. Itâll be an adequate sting to match that of her betrothedâs incised testicles. Obediently, he follows, piercing her open with his cock head. A long wail escapes her as her cunt yields under pressure, then a startled gasp when Feydâs knife is wedged inside the tight space between her two front teeth, so she cannot close her mouth.
Her cunt clenches fearfully around the thick length as he makes himself at home with languid thrusts. If the blade slips, he might just split her gums and lip. She doesnât dare shake her head no and her tongue retreats far back into the cavity of her mouth, whimpering as he fucks her slowly, taking fascination in the way peril makes her slicker and her walls grip him in a fluttering embrace.
âEvery rotten craving,â he cites her slyly. âFuck.â A rapt look overtakes his eyes when she slides her tongue against the bottom of the blade, featherlight. Sheâs learned it from him, his favored way of testing the edge of a blade.
âYou stole my show today,â he rasps, allowing her to wrap her fingers around his wrist to maneuver the kukri away. She pries it from his hand, then hurls it forcefully across the room.Â
âYou let me. Maybe you like it when I bereave you, na-Baron.â The blade lands with a clatter.
âYou bereft me of my other concubines.âÂ
The memory of them strengthens her fingers and she rips the jacket of Feydâs festive suit open, digging her nails into taut, pale pectorals. âThe Great Houses will be displeased.â
âYes, they will be,â Feyd purrs, plush lips twitching into an excited smirk. âMaybe itâll start a war.â He accentuates the word with a sharp thrust. The madness of his mirth over the idea is only slightly diluted by the arousal that swims in tar-black eyes. If her selfish claim sparks a war, she will have no regrets over it, because Feyd-Rautha is hers, tied by the heart, not by politics.
Her husband to be fucks her with frantic rythm until slick drips down her cheeks and turns the tiles below wet and sticky. They're both still waiting for the final nudge to come undone, so the night of their betrothal may go on forever. Her hands slide around the back or Feyd's neck, demanding kisses from plush lips and black teeth that glint in the dark.
âYou looked so beautiful on your knees,â she moans into his mouth. âYou should do it again.â Her gaze sweeps over to the balcony door and Feyd's follows. âYou didn't deliver your speech, I heard, because you were, aahh, p-pouting.â
âDon't tease me, woman.â Feyd stands and pulls her up with him, arms hooked around her legs. His thick cock still twitches in her cunt as she wraps her legs around his waist. âTake off your dress.â
She obeys without question, heels of her feet digging into his lower back as she pulls the half-slashed golden fabric that's still gathered around her hips over her head. Feyd hums appreciatively, eyes gliding down her breasts and belly to the point where they're conjoined by the pelvis.
âNow my jacket,â he instructs and with a bit of awkward pulling, she manages to free the fabric from the clutch of her legs around his waist, then slides it off his arms one by one. Somehow, even with only one arm he manages to hold her firmly against his chest, slowly rocking his hips upwards, so her mind never stops reeling.
Last of all, Feyd kicks off his shoes and marches her over to the wall, grinning. âFeyd, what are you-? Wait.â A breeze brushes over her bare back as Feyd kicks the balcony door further open with and carries her out into the open, smiling wide with black maws.
A gust of turbulent, putrid wind catches her hair and turmoil swells from two hundred meters below, guttural chanting that could be celebration or it could be war, impossible to tell how many of them will look up to the palace pyramid and see the na-Baron's concubine seated on the banister and the na-Baron between her thighs.
Gasping, she clings to Feyd's shoulders, stripped of color entirely. The reflected moonlight barely makes it past the clouds, so they are swathed in somberness. It is a truly alien world, one that could really use a new sun.
Feyd-Rautha cants his hips, languidly thrusting into her cunt, pale arms circling her. A thread of slick comes off and drips into the abyss below, past the base of his thick cock. âNot the biggest fan of speeches. I prefer demonstrations.â
He fucks her on his balcony that overlooks Barony, the capital of Giedi Prime, cock drilling into her over the perilous chasm.
âYou made me swear it, but you never promised me that I will be your only.â Feyd's plush lips curl into a snarl.
âHmmmâŠâ She pretends to ponder, a flash of amusement on her lips.
Feyd-Rautha however doesnât take kindly to the playful hesitation and dips her dangerously backwards, smirking. Her life hangs in the arms of a psychopath and below her is nothing but gaping emptiness for two hundred meters. âIâd rather throw us both down there than share you!â
Her heart thrums like a shield, almost pierced by a slow blade. âIâd rather live another day in your arms, my na-Baron.â
Zestfully, he hoists her back up and resumes fucking her, possessive and rough, one hand tugging on her asscheek, the other clutching her waist. Her mind and nerves swim with pleasure. The euphoria of being claimed as his so brutally makes her want to laugh and cry, white teeth bared at the na-Baron.
He too stares at her, waiting, muscles twitching under pale skin.
âYou think I can? When under me is death and a thousand Harkonnens watching?â
âYou will.â Feyd leers, lips twitching. His cock drives into her center. Whimpering, she slides her hand between their bodies to rub her clit. âNo.â
âNo?!â
âYou will cum from your husband's cock.â
The confidence that drips thick and velvety from his voice makes her head roll back, moaning. Her cunt flutters weakly, climax digging its tendrils into her core, eager to burst into full bloom. She angles her pelvis, squirming in Feyd's grasp, and props up one foot on the railing, trusting him to hold her.
And he does, laughing. Insanity lights up his eyes as he fucks into her, slap slap slap, pubic mound grinding against her clit. She arches her back and his cock nudges her just right, toes curling, lids fluttering.
âThere, that's a good girl.â
She comes undone with a long moan, voice carried away by the putrid wind. Feyd-Rautha's lips and jaws twitch and he covers her open mouth with his. His eyes are open when he climaxes and fills her with his seed, their consummation on display for the whole of Giedi Prime.
Trembling fingers claw at Feyd's shoulders, dampened with a sheen of sweat. His chest heaves with raspy breaths and he raises a finger, trailing it over her throat and clavicle.
âMy birthday gift.â
âThe sex?â A gust of wind catches her face.
âNo.â Feyd smirks. âYou. My wife.â

âI want to use specific names for colours/shades but I donât know many!â Hahaha sakira has got you! If you want to add colour to the objects or stuff in your writing you shouldnât just write it like this
âHer dress was redâ âHis eyes were purpleâ
That makes your writing bland, it dumbs down the readers imagination during reading. Instead describe the colour like this
âHer dress was like a cup of Rooibos tea under a sunlit dayâ
âHis eyes could be compared to that of a ravenâs deep violet eyesâ
(tip: amethyst is an overused word, thereâs a list of other purple words below you should check out)
You can describe colours using objects because it will give shape to the sentence but donât always go too detailed. If you make one sentence with a lot of adjectives and everything then donât over use it in the other sentence thatâs is.
But remember to use a simile like âasâ or âlikeâ if you do use objects.
I already wrote âHer dress was like a cup of Rooibos tea under a sunlit dayâ so next time when I mention the dressâs colour again I am going to write something like this
âHer garnet dress flowed in the windâ
Why? Because simple sentenced always enchance the writing and gives reader a feeling.
now that we are done with how to write colours letâs see some synonyms!!
white- bleached , colourless , pearly , milky , snowy, ivory , salt , Lacey , linen , frosty, daisy parchment , porcelain, cotton , rice bone
black- ebony, midnight, jade , spider , coal , pitch black, void , empty, sooty , obsidian , metal, onyx , ink , crow
grey- shadow, ash , graphite , foggy, dove , silver , dull, cloud ,slate, iron, smoke, pebble
red- garnet, blush , Merlot , cherry , crimson, rose, sangria, bloody, berry , currant, terracotta, jam , merlot
orange- tangerine , ginger , apricot, autumn , spice , amber, rust, marmalade, pumpkin , carrot , clay, golden , copper , ochre
yellow- gold, canary , light , butterscotches, dandelion, honey , blonde, corn, saffron , ocher, buttermilk
green- beryl , viridescent , olive , emerald , pickle, leafy , sage , lime , pear , mint, mignonette, glaucous
blue- ocean , aqua , cobalt, navy , sapphire, admiral, denim , cerulean, indigo , lapis , peacock, aegean, azure , turquoise, cyan , arctic
purple - amethyst , raven , violet ,lilac , lavender, plum , magenta ,orchid , mulberry, heather, raisin, amaranthine , eggplant , iris , periwinkle
pink- blush , cherry blossom , taffy , peach, flamingo , rosey , salmon , fuscia, rosewood , pale red
IMPORTANT : remember to do GOOD research on shades!! You need to know which one you can use as an adjective and which one is a noun. If itâs a noun turn it into adjective, if it cannot be turned into an adjective then use a simile.
Thereâs more and if you know put it in the reblogs

Food and Agriculture in Thranduil's Kingdom
It's unfortunate that Thorin's Company was welcomed as dinner guests in Rivendell but imprisoned as invaders in Mirkwood. Had Thorin just shown King Thranduil just a little bit more respect, they could have been fed a whole lot better by the Silvans. And there would most definitely have been meat!
While the Rivendell elves seem to lean vegetarian, and Lothlorien's culinary specialty is the "one bite" lembas, the elves of Greenwood know more than a thing or two about indulgent feasting. These elves consider themselves permanent residents of their land, and with that outlook comes an attitude of celebrating Middle-earth's bounties.
The Silvans of the Woodland Realm have always been fond of feasting, merry-making, and community and family traditions centered around food. Furthermore, they are ruled by a King and royal family who whole-heartedly support this culture, participate in it themselves, and encourage trade that allows the realm to access food from other lands.
When it comes to food, the Greenwood elves are actually more alike Dwarves and Hobbits than they are the lofty High Elves.
Below the cut are SotWK headcanons regarding Food and Agriculture in the Woodland Realm:
Food, Cuisine, and Agriculture in the Woodland Realm
Prior to the establishment of the Woodland Realm and in the early reign of King Oropher (c. SA 700), the Silvan Elves populating Greenwood lived in smaller communities spread throughout the vast forest, but predominantly in the southwest, closer to their kin in Lorinand. Limited subsistence farming was practiced by a few, but by far most food at this time was obtained through hunting and gathering. The rich and bountiful Greenwood had always provided more than enough resources for its dwellers.
GATHERING
Greenwood Elves happily spend most of their immortal lives within Eryn Galen and the lands of Rhovanion, so they are accustomed to living off solely what the forest produces, and their diet is influenced largely by it.
The most commonly foraged edibles are:
Nuts: hazelnut, pecan, walnut, hickory, beechnut, chestnut
Fruit: plum, apple, grape, persimmon
Berries: mulberry, blackberry, currant, elderberry, raspberry
Wild garlic and ramps
Fungi: mushrooms and truffles of many varieties
Eggs: from various wild birds
Herbs and Spices: fennel, corn mint, dandelions, ground elder, pigweed, cicely, sorrel, hogweed, stinging nettle, watercress, wild carrot, rowan, wood avens, sneezewort
Maple: sourced for sugar and syrup
There are also hundreds of plant species native only to Greenwood and Rhovanion that are valued for their uses in healing. However, the Silvan herbalists of Greenwood are usually the only ones able to effectively extract the curative properties of these plants, indicating a connection between Elves and homeland may be necessary for the healing to work.
Art from Fantasy Flight Games
HUNTING
Greenwood Elves are expert hunters and trackers, with unparalleled mastery within their forest and the lands that surround its borders. With careful consideration and instinctual knowledge of the forest ecosystem, they select their prey according to what's most populous, and rotate as necessary to balance out conservation levels.
Among the animals they hunt regularly for meat consumption are rabbit, squirrel, duck, turkey, quail, weasel, racoon, boar, deer, wild oxen, and elk. On rare or special occasions, they hunt less common game such as lion and bear. They also obtain fish and freshwater mussels, clams, and snails from the Forest River and various streams.
It is illegal in Greenwood to hunt or kill specific animals that are declared a protected species, including the King's Elk (the breed of Thranduil's war elk), the silverwolf, and all species of eagle or falcon.
Any fauna or fauna may also be temporarily decreed off-limits for hunting or gathering, by order of the Elvenking and his council.
Any animal taken in as an elf's pet or familiar may also not be killed, so long as it has been properly tamed and does not pose a risk to others.
Throughout the Second Age, the Woodland Realm's population steadily increased under the wise rule of King Oropher and his court. As the communities and villages that made up the kingdom grew larger and more numerous, the practice of agriculture became more widespread to bolster the realm's food supply.
In the Woodland Realm, farming would always remain secondary to hunting and gathering due to the preference of Silvans for wild game and native vegetation. Farmed products serve primarily to enhance cuisine, supplement large feasts, provide reserves in case of war or famine, and as goods for trade with other realms.
FARMING and LIVESTOCK
Tracts of community farmlands were gradually cultivated in the arable fields between Greenwood's western borders (near the capital of Amon Lanc) and the Anduin River.
In order of output, the food crops most commonly grown are: wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, and peas.
Fiber crops grown for cloth, paper, and rope include: flax, hemp, and cotton.
Domesticated animals are raised in small numbers solely for their by-products and not their meat. In order of importance, livestock that are raised are:
Sheep: source of wool and milk
Chickens: source of eggs
Cows: source of milk and for birthing calves
Animals raised for labor include:
Horses: highly valued and raised exclusively for transport and mounted cavalry
Oxen: used as beasts of burden (large-scale/community work)
Donkeys: used as beasts of burden (small-scale/family work)
When Prince Thranduil built his own palace of Bar Lasgalen just south of the Old Forest Road (which would later become the new capital upon his ascension to the throne), he helped the Silvans residing in the valleys of the Emyn Duir to initiate small-scale agriculture, which encouraged further migration into that area and northward towards the Grey Mountains.
Elvish historians refer to the first millennium of the Third Age as the "Golden Age of the Woodland Realm". During these years, the kingdom enjoyed an unbroken peace under a wise King and Queen who also had five sons actively involved in the governance of the realm.
Departing from his father's more isolationist leanings, Thranduil encouraged trade with realms across Middle-earth. It included all the races except for Hobbits, since the Shire did not yet exist prior to the darkening of Greenwood.
Sadly, most trade came to a stop by the end of the Third Age, with the exception of the nearby Dale, due to the struggles with Dol Guldur. However, after Erebor was reestablished by King Thorin, trade gradually resumed with the Dwarves. After the War of the Ring and the Cleansing of Dol Guldur, Eryn Lasgalen once again thrived with renewed relations with their trade partners--finally including the Shire!
AGRICULTURAL TRADE
The Woodland Realm's three most valuable exported agricultural products are:
Rare spices
Mushrooms and truffles
Medicinal herbs (extremely valuable but highly controlled to prevent misuse)
Imported goods are considered luxuries and not necessities, and are brought in seasonally for community feasts and celebrations (of which there are many). Everything is meant for the consumption of all the kingdom's citizens, regardless of status; there is never anything reserved as "special" for the royals or nobles.
The top agricultural imports, usually from realms/communities of Men, are:
Wine
Textiles (silk, cotton)
Seafood
Sugar
Cheeses
ARTISAN COOKS and BAKERS
Exposure to outside realms and cultures also resulted in an expansion of the culinary arts within Thranduil's kingdom. Cooking and baking became full-blown, respected and sought-after professions instead of tasks done within individual households. With the King's support, talented Elves were sent to other realms to learn their culinary practices; chefs from other kingdoms were invited to Greenwood as royal guests to do the same.
A few culinary feats and innovations the Woodland Elves became known for:
Use of offal (innards) in recipes that actually taste fantastic, thanks to seasonings and skilled cookery
Using literally every single part of a butchered animal with zero waste
Aphrodisiacs in common food recipes, using plant ingredients (partly responsible for their marriage and birth rates and large families)
Salted game meat (jerky) that is highly nourishing and excellent for travel; essentially a meat version of lembas
The use of whipped egg whites to make essentially a type of meringue--which opened up an entire category of desserts that became staples at feasts
Bonus Fun Headcanons! (as a thank you for reading this far)
Mealtimes in Thranduil's Family
No one can beat Ada in drinking contests, ever; it has been attempted hundreds of times--usually with Dorwinion wine--and Thranduil has never been dethroned by his sons.
The King and every single one of the Princes are all heavy eaters, and everyone, including the Queen, eats meat.
While they all observe formal manners at the table, the Princes can get rowdy when not in the presence of their mother--especially when there's drinking involved. (Not quite as bad as Thorin's Company, but close.)
Breakfast: Taken individually in their own rooms, according to each one's schedule/leisure
Lunch: The most commonly skipped meal; usually taken "on the go", and oftentimes with people outside of the family (e.g. business lunches, lunch with friends)
Dinner: The family meal. Everyone is expected to sit down and eat dinner with the rest of the family, unless traveling or there is a prior commitment that takes precedence.
Random Fun Food Facts with the Thranduilions
The Princes regularly compete to see who can eat the most exotic/"disgusting" food items. Turhir remains champion at this (able and willing to eat literally everything), with Legolas frequently trying (and constantly failing) to unseat him.
They have also competed to see who can eat the riskiest (aka poisonous) food items. Arvellas has somehow proven to be the most impervious to natural poisons, much to Gelir's frustration.
Legolas can go the longest without eating food, but no one really cares to try to beat his record.
Mirion is the heaviest eater, but is also the fastest, and because he has flawless table manners no one really notices.
Gelir can find truffles just using his sense of smell--yes, like a truffle pig. He has successfully trained other similarly gifted Elves to do the same.

his love language | part 4
featuring: pantalone, baizhu x gender neutral! reader
content warning: slightly suggestive?
{gift receiving}
Having a partner with poor taste would have been a terrible blow to Pantaloneâs reputation. But it seems having found himself in a relationship with you â from a humble family merchant background â has proven his prejudices wrong. While you arenât as well versed as him in the arts and fineries of the higher living world, you learn quickly and listen, all your attention devoted to him.
And now, years later, finding a few more streaks of grey in lilac shocks nestled in black hair, you have learnt to read him like a book. Fine teas from Sumeru are brought home after visiting family, soothing incense and spice fill the empty corners of the home you share together.
When the wealthiest man in Teyvat could have anything he desires at the snap of a finger, what could you possibly give him that he hasnât procured already?
The companionship and warmth you have brought into his once isolative and dull life as a businessman has altered his perception of this world dramatically, and he would go to any lengths needed to keep you safe.
Now, waking up beside you, tangled in mulberry silk sheets, a fine robe whispers across your skin as he moves it away to kiss your bare shoulder softly. Lithe fingers trace over your shoulder, your neck and to your jaw, pausing there to admire you stir in your sleep.
Watching the sun fall onto your skin, your hair catching the light as it falls over your face transfixes him into placidity. What more could a man want, when the thing he needed most woke up next to him each morning? He knew he would never find the answer, and quite frankly, he didnât want to.
âą
{words of affirmation}
âYou work far too hard.â
This is what you keep telling Baizhu at the end of yet another long week. Haggard, at his wits end and scolded at by Changsheng as he places her down on the comforter next to you on the bed.
âIâll be in the bathroom,â is all he says over his shoulder, his voice a shell of what it was, energetic and passionate on Mondays and all but lost by Fridays.
You follow him into the adjoining bathroom, smiling softly when you see his shoulders sag in relief. Youâd drawn hot water and infused it with lavender and silk flower essence beforehand, as you usually did.
âThank you, my love.â
Every week, you two seem to follow the same routine. You undress, both shedding the weight of the day from your shoulders, the hazy atmosphere in the room slowly but surely seeping into your weary bones. The clawfoot tub isnât small by any means, but you find it slightly cramped with him between your legs, his back to you.
Gentle hands sweep up his hair into a messy bun once youâre both in, and with silk flower oil cupped in your palms, you gently knead into the sore muscles of his back and up into his neck. He hunches forward, eyes closed, a small sigh of relief escaping past his lips.
âIt seems young Hongdou has behaved rather well this week,â you started, voice soft, accompanied by the soft splash of water as Baizhu righted himself.
âAs much as she could, considering her endless complaints of bitter medicine,â Baizhu started, a small lilt of frustration in his tone. âBut treatment has been curbing her illness quite dramatically as of late.â
âAnd I hear someone got her to take her medicine on the first try,â a small grin as you gently poked at his shoulder. âYou did so well with her this week. In no time, all the other children will stop being so wary of Bubu Pharmacy, Iâm sure of it.â
Baizhu chuckled lightly at that, turning his head to the side for you to leave a quick kiss on his cheek.
âIt seems enticing them with something sweet doesnât hurt.â
After long days such as these, he was endlessly grateful to have you at his side. After so many patients, unfortunate diagnoses, and long-term treatment plans, hearing your encouragement at the smallest of victories made him feel just that little bit better. While he tended to focus on the grand scheme of things, you helped reign him back into the present.

I would really like Red Bean Mochi and Blueberry Muffins for Rollo? đđ·đœđ»đ ă1ă
For the hour I remained in the cafĂ©, you smiled a total of thirty-seven times, one smile per customer and one or two depending on coworkers youâre well-acquainted with. I would have counted your every laugh, every blink of your perfect, pretty eyes, but then that would be like counting your every breath, every heartbeat, and it would be impossible to come up with an accurate sum when youâre always so...alive. One breath could be two taken at once, and a single blink could simply be my own eyes shutting and opening before yours do. Therefore, it is impossible to truly quantify your every movement without looking completely, utterly, foolishly enthralled.Â
I suppose this feeling is what you might call love. For all of the romances I have read and all of the romances I have witnessed in this city, whether intentional or not, the love I feel is not bitter or sweet like some might describe. It simply exists; it lights a crackling flame within the concrete hearth that is my heart. I should liken it to warmthâto linens fresh from the dryer or spiced mulberries or bright, dancing fire. It is comforting like the winter coat I don in order to combat this deathly chill.Â
I have never felt this way before.Â
Today, when I ducked inside to avoid the frigid snowfall outside, the bell above the door announced my arrival, and you were there at the register as always. You smiled at me, once when our eyes met and a second time when you had asked me how I was doing and I had said, âCold.â You laughed, but I am not a comedian. I will not pretend to be one for your sake, but I appreciate your hospitality all the same. Your optimism, even if manufactured for the customer, is inviting.Â
Perhaps you reserve such reactions for me?
I visit this cafĂ© every Sunday at exactly 10:30 in the morning. Itâs important to be methodical in every aspect of oneâs life. Schedules are necessary; they create order and peace. I have visited so often that you know me as a regular. You know my name and how itâs spelled. You write your Lâs slanted and your Oâs pumpkin-shaped (most likely because Halloween is approaching and itâs your attempt at being festive, even if the Oâs look more like obscure shapes than pumpkins). You look at me when I step over the threshold into a room of coffee-scented comforts and you say, âA warm croissant and a cup of classic espresso with milk and foam, right?â And I nod every time.
You know me well. I will know you even better.Â
Your name tag reads (Name). Itâs a lovely name. I could write lines of wonderful words describing the way it feels when I speak it to myself in front of a mirror or when I whisper it late at night as though itâs a secret. But I will not, as I am not usually very poetic, and that is a task suited for a poet, which I am not.Â
Surely you have a surname. Most often do. However, in the event that you are lacking one or are not too fond of the one you currently possess, you are welcome to take mine.
đđ·đœđ»đ ă2ă
My first attempt at a love letter is as follows:
You are the warmth that melts icecaps and reshapes glaciers. No, not quite. Am I trying to compare you to the catastrophe that is global warming? Think romantically, Rollo. This is the City of Flowers, after all. Surely there are better phrasings...
You are melodious like the Bell of Salvation like the sweetest birdsong. You are warm and fluffy like a croissant. You are love incarnate. If I could pry you open rib by rib and live within your beating, blood-filled heart, we would be together forever. Bound eternally by flesh and blood.
These lines feel rather crude. How do romance authors capture the complexities of love so easily? Beautiful words come from the deepest pits of the heart, or so they all claim. The words I wish to tell you come from my very soul, yet I cannot seem to transcribe them here. Should I be direct? But then blunt honesty is not nearly as romantic as flowery prose.
Dearest, sweetest you,
For every smile you grant me, I live another year in good health. For every syllable of laughter and delight I hear, I feel inclined to give you the world, whether in ruins or not, if only to witness your happiness.
I suppose a start is a start, even if itâs a depressingly abysmal one. I hope this week passes fast. Iâd like to see you as soon as possible for some much-needed inspiration and, of course, so I can watch you.
đđ·đœđ»đ ă3ăÂ
I arrived at the usual time, but you were too absorbed in conversation with a customer to notice me. I consider myself a fair, level-headed man, and for that reason envy is not usually an issue. But the casual manner with which that fool wrote their number on your arm, tattooing your perfect, pretty skin in sinful ink... You smiled and laughed with them, promising to call them after your shift, your perfect, pretty eyes ablaze with excitement or wonder or awe or... Iâd much sooner poke them out with sewing needles than witness you fawn over numbers. I watched all of it from my place in line, gripping my handkerchief in such a tight fist my knuckles blanched.Â
You should know jealousy makes a man like myself monstrous.
Itâs important that I keep this diary to detail all of my innermost desires so that I wonât feel compelled to act on them. But in that moment I had wished that, if you were to receive a phone number, it would have been given to you on a piece of paper. Paper is easy to shred and discard and burn. It is not an easy feat to sever an arm from the elbow.Â
But I can be patient, as I often am, so that you will come to love me in the same way I love you.Â
I write this as I watch you flitting about behind the counter to prepare my espresso. I wonder if you ever catch a break. This cafĂ© is quiet on Sunday mornings, but Iâm certain itâs much more lively during the week. I wonder if itâs ever empty and you sit in here on your phone, waiting for something to happen. I wonder what positions you might like to try on the counter, the tables, the booth Iâm sitting in...
I had to shut this diary momentarily when you came to deliver my order. Sometimes I wonder if you would share my sentiments on magic. I almost asked when we talked briefly. Your perfect, pretty fingers were drumming along the circular, silver tray as you looked at me, smiling your perfect, pretty smile. I asked if you were studying anything. You told me you were taking a gap year, and then you had asked if I was a journalist because, in your words, I am âalways scribbling away with your nose in that book.â
I suppose I am, in some manner of the word. I smiled at you, sipping from my espresso, and said, âThe subject Iâm studying is very special. One-of-a-kind, you might say.â A poor excuse at flirting.
I am not a flirt, and I would never pretend to be one. I am genuine in all aspects of my life, especially when it comes to love. You must know this.Â
You were going to ask me to elaborate, but the bell at the door announced the arrival of more customers and you drifted away from me with an apologetic smile. I caught sight of the number scrawled on your arm as you retreated. Magic could numb you well enough while I bring the blade down, so fast it will be but a mere flash. I should not cut your arm. I should not hurt you.
I should not love you to this extent.Â
Like the Crimson Lotus, you are a vibrant, fiery temptation. I fear the contents of my chest have already been reduced to ash.Â
đđ·đœđ»đ ă4ă
The Crimson Lotus requires adequate nutrients like any other flower, though such nutrients are distinctive to this species. Unlike normal blossoms, the Crimson Lotus is parasitic in nature, sustaining itself with magic. You might liken them to the average pest, whether human or insect, or a fire that will only grow when fed more fuel. I could compose an entire novel on cultivation techniques and facts. I could also set these flowers loose and watch them wreak havoc on the city. The students from Night Raven College will be visiting soon, with a certain Malleus Draconia being among them. I wonder if theyâre fond of parting gifts, by which I mean parting with their oh-so-treasured magic.
I hope you arenât a mage. If you are, Iâm afraid I might have to hurt you.
Rambling aside, I shall try my hand at a love letter once again.
Dearest, sweetest you,Â
You are the joyous scents and sounds of lively city streets, of bakers boasting fresh, fluffy bread, of florists flaunting floral arrangements in all colors and species, of townsfolk turning the city upside-down come festival time. You are the golden glow that befalls the land when the sun rises, and you are the silvery shimmer that swathes all who sleep under the moonâs watchful illumination.
You are the air I breathe. The air I need. You are the bell who should rightfully reside within the tower I will construct. The tower of my heart? The tower of true love? If I could climb inside your skin, I might come to know the real you.
Perhaps I should pick up another romance soon. I know nothing of poetry or love letters.Â
đđ·đœđ»đ ă5ă
I followed you home today.Â
I am a fair, level-headed man, and so for that reason I know not to cross the law. But can you possibly expect a man of my nature to remain lawful when he is in love? They say love should surpass all. Does this not include the law? Does this not include morals and standards? If love is so mighty and marvelous, then why might some label my actions wrong and wicked? Is this not just a form of protection?
I do not intend to scare you. I do not intend to make you feel unsafe.Â
I followed you home today, and you did not notice. How could you when you had headphones on?
You live in an apartment on the third floor. If I counted correctly, you should be seventh or eighth from the entrance to the stairs, tucked neatly away near the end of the hall. Perhaps I should make a copy of your key so that I can immerse myself in your privacy.Â
I am a fair, level-headed man, and so I will not steal anything. But if you do find something of yours has gone missingâwhether a personal item or what you think is insignificant trashâI have merely borrowed it for my own use. I cannot promise whether I might return this borrowed item, but I can at least promise that it will be put to good use.Â
I could construct a doll in your likeness. I would need clothing, perhaps hair, skin, teeth, a tongue to entwine around mine... Thatâs morbid, isnât it? Fitting for Halloween, but grotesquely harrowing. A silent doll who resembles its human counterpart in all aspects but the vibrancy of life... Iâd much rather have the real you than a patchwork doppelgĂ€nger. If I tried my hand at fashioning you from needle and thread, I would just create a corpse. There are artists who only paint pain and misery, hence why we now look at certain paintings and consider them cursed. I am not a poet or a doll-maker, so I will not write poetry and I will not stitch dolls together.Â
I am not a villain.
The urge to knock on your door had seized me then, when I stood in the hall in front of what I assumed was your door, my fist raised in preparation to knock thrice. Superstition says that if you receive three knocks on your door or windowpane, someone you love will have been taken away by Death within three days, weeks, months. I suppose Death does not need to conform to time after which the three knocks have been granted. Well, I believe in no such things, and I am not Death.Â
But youâll certainly think I am when you canât see me.
đđ·đœđ»đ ă6ă
Before I welcome the Night Raven College students, I visited you. You werenât home. It was Sunday. 10:30 in the morning. I slid a letter under your door. Sugared thoughts are sealed inside with red wax. Iâm not afraid to admit here that I am not entirely confident in my prose, hence why Iâve left it anonymous. Iâve penned the exact letter here for my sake, should I ever need to flip through these pages again to remind myself of the frustrations I conquered just to craft a single love letter.Â
Dearest, sweetest you,
I have never felt this way before. When I spy you through the window, I feel as if the stars have aligned to fix the very fate which has led me to you. Your smile is invigorating; your laughter is an enchanting melody. Perhaps you reserve such reactions for me? In that regard, you know me well. I will know you better.
I am not a flirt, and I would never pretend to be one. I am genuine in all aspects of my life, especially when it comes to love. You must know this. Unfortunately, itâs saddening to see how easily you fall prey to simple pleasantries. Infuriating, almost. You should know jealousy makes a man like myself monstrous. But I can be patient, as I often am, so that you will come to love me in the same way I love you.Â
Like the Crimson Lotus, you are a vibrant, fiery temptation. I fear the contents of my chest have already been reduced to ash. I should not love you to this extent.
I hope you arenât a mage. If you are, Iâm afraid I might have to hurt you, if only to show you right from wrong. I followed you home today, and you did not notice. How could you when you had headphones on? I do not intend to scare you. I do not intend to make you feel unsafe. I only wish to love from afar for now.
I am not a villain, but youâll certainly think I am when you canât see me.Â

hi hi, i'm currently homeless and trying to eat more vegan food (or rather, less non-vegan food)-- do you know of anything warm that could conceivably be made in a microwave that isn't largely expensive frozen foods or those red bean and rice packets? my go-to lately has been microwaved scrambled eggs, but i really don't want to rely on animal products. thank you either way đ
helloo. first of all, if the ethics of veganism are on your mind, honestly, just do your best. veganism is about doing as much as you're practically able to do in your situation. my family and I were homeless for a stretch of time when I was growing up, and it wasn't until that situation was over that I had the liberty (i.e. mental bandwidth) to be so choosy about what I ate (granted, this was before veganism became popular at all. we were "crazy" for being vegetarian already).
but secondly, I would suggest mostly going for canned food, cup noodles & sandwich items. also, oatmeal/porridge if you're into hot cereal. those usually make the most sense to rely on. a canned soup + microwavable rice + your favorite spice blend could, I hope, be a fairly easy go-to in your situation. (rely on complex carbs: rice, bread, beans, oats, pasta, tortillas, and potatoes/sweet potatoes/cassava/etc). and tea is nice for keeping warm and your tummy full when your meals are a little scanty. hydration, in general, is good if you're able to keep on top of.
last thing, if you're able, try to keep incorporating some fresh or dried fruit, veggies, and herbs from time to time. I remember super craving fresh food. your health can really take an impact without it. you could even stop by farmer's markets towards closing hours to get a good deal or shop the produce in stores that are marked down for "imperfections." bananas, leafy greens, tomatoes, raisins, baby carrots, celery, kiwis, parsley, sweet potatoes, frozen berries...get something. ethnic markets tend to have better prices on produce than supermarkets, for the record. foraging is also a way to acquire free food (even if you can't find that much). enough pine needles to make a tea, enough mulberries to make a snack of, or enough dandelion blossoms & leaves to garnish a meal is better than nothing when it comes to getting more nourishment into your body.
best of luck, anon. I hope lots of unexpected sweet times are in store for youđâșïž
