not me thinking about Mufasa's spirit playing with cub Kiara in the opening of lion king 2, her playful swatting at his breeze the first clue of her fire, her fun, who she is as Kiara before she was ever told she'd someday be queen
not me thinking about Mufasa watching helplessly as his son stifles Kiara, worriedly insists she walks in his paw prints- literally and figuratively- no exploring or adventure, no forgetting her future duties.
Mufasa, who pulled his young son in and dropped his own smaller duties as king to play pouncing with young Simba
now seeing Simba stop Kiara's playful pouncing with a restraining paw over and over again- The pain and fear that Mufasa's death scarred Simba with, now hurting Mufasa's granddaughter too.
(but not forever. not if Mufasa can help it)
Simba's shame and guilt at his dismissal of what it really means to be king, pressed onto his cub, his heir, his responsibility, weighing Kiara down even when she's still so young, isolating her not just from Simba but from herself- Kiara watching a baby bird try to fly and get chased back to the nest, her heartbroken face, her GLEE when the little bird is flying on it's own later...
and her helpless, bittersweet happiness as it flies away, doing what she can't do- not because anyone is physically stopping her but because she's been taught to stop herself.
Mufasa, watching Kiara get to be herself for the first time as she makes a new friend, as they save each other, as she is BRAVE in the face of danger, STRONG and SMART enough to make sure both she and Kovu escape it, and... proud of herself, finally. For doing something as herself.
Kiara so happy to finally play with a friend, before other old pains interrupt and separate them
and this is when Mufasa reaches out to Rafiki with a plan. A plan to heal the break in the pride lands, yes, but also- a plan to give his granddaughter some HAPPINESS. A way for her to have more in her life than just being queen
(or even... to not be queen)
Kiara gets a choice. Her grandfather makes sure she does, and that she knows it's hers to make
In helping nudge her and Kovu together, Mufasa leads them to the moment- after Simba refuses to listen to his daughter again, running from old shame and blindly chasing his father's legacy- as the stars watch over Kiara running from Pride Rock, finding Kovu, the two of them laughing as they chase each other through the ashes of past destruction-
(the simple joy of enjoying life together, Kiara's gift to Kovu, another cub who didn't really get to be one and has to learn who he even is now, all this time later- just she does)
there is no sign given to Kiara. No reminder to go home
no request from Mufasa that she heal the wounds Simba and Zira keep choosing to rip open
she could go. She could go, like Kovu says, leave and start a life with someone who she's happy with as herself, who loves her FOR herself, without needing her to be queen-
finally, for the first time in her life, she could be free. The joy that should have been hers as a cub, gifted now, under the silently watching stars
(she is Mufasa's grandchild without being anything else)
she chooses to see others in her own reflection. she chooses to go back- laughs softly at the idea of leaving-
(Simba passed Mufasa's words down to her, the part of Simba's father that Scar couldn't kill, that Simba wouldn't let die, the understanding that grandfather and granddaughter share without ever having met- that makes them the great king that he was, and the great queen she already is proving herself to be)
but that WAS her choice to make
to be queen. to go back. to again try making Simba listen
and....
to reach out a paw to Zira after Zira tried murdering her father again right in front her- after Kiara leaped in the way- a queen is brave and strong when she needs to be
but a king or queen must be more than that
Mufasa, looking up at his brother (who's resentment he knows well) begging for and trusting Scar would reach down and save him-
Mufasa's granddaughter, looking down at Zira (who's hate she has felt so personally) and reaching down desperately, begging Zira to let Kiara save her-
a circle completed. an old hurt, finally healing
(for those that choose it. Scar and Zira with claws out, losing themselves as they cut themselves off from those around them)
Mufasa couldn't be there when Kiara was a cub, to laugh as she pounced at butterflies and forget everything for a game of chase. He would have loved to see Kiara the silly, the playful, his granddaughter before anything else- like he did with his son
His not being there is what kept Simba from being able to be there for her either, what caused Simba to hurt his own cub without even knowing it, lectures in place of jokes and worry that cut between them like a gorge neither could cross alone
but Simba listens to Kiara in the end. when she reaches out to him, again, finally he reaches back
Simba ends up on Pride Rock with his daughter, with the lion she loves welcomed into their family, along with all those Simba once banished. two generations side by side
and Kiara is finally happy to be there
that is when Mufasa tells Simba he has done well. As a king? As a father
it wasn't just the pride lands that needed healing
Kiara is happy now

It's interesting that they seemed to have kept Kiara's apricot(?) colored pelt (kind of hard to tell with the lighting) from the animated movie but changed the color of her eyes from brown/red like her father's to teal/green like her mother's.

My other hot take on TLK 2 is that Zira should have been the only Outsider lioness originally from the Pridelands, and all the other lionesses should have been wanderers who fell in with Zira because she's charismatic. So when Zira is like "Scar was an angel and Simba is the devil" the other lionesses are like "Well, we don't have any reason to disbelieve her." And meanwhile Simba pre-emptively banishes them b/c they're hanging out with Scar's crazy ex.
Whereas if all these lionesses were front and center while Scar was saying "If you starve then so be it, I'm the king and I can do whatever I please" and backhanding (backpawing?) Sarabi . . . If these lionesses' reaction to all that was "Wow, now that is what I call a Real King, not like that soy boy Mufasa with all his silly talk of 'respecting the Circle of Life'" . . . then no, I don't think they should be allowed back in the pride.

The Strange Parallel Between Mike Wheeler and Disney’s Mulan (The Mike/Disney Parallels 1/2)

Okay, I know what you’re gonna say: “Wait, Mulan’s a Chinese girl from the Hun Dynasty, and Mike’s an American boy from the 1980s. The hell do you mean??” Admittedly, it does sound strange, but stay with me here. I’m not saying that Mike and Mulan are the same person, definitely not. But, they both do have one big similarity in common:
Their self-confidence issues, and the need to protect those who they love.
In the beginning of her movie, Mulan is shown to have some major self-confidence issues. Most prominent with her thinking that she’s brought shame to her family for not being “the perfect daughter” cause she failed to impress the matchmaker.
Like wise, through season four, we can see that Mike is also struggling with his own self-confidence. The most famous example that people like to use is the Van scene before Will whips out his painting. Mike talks about how he feels inadequate and useless when it comes to his relationship with El (“she’s Superman, and I’m Lois Lane. But even that doesn’t work.” To paraphrase). And, if we do take in the aspect of Mike being gay as well, it can also be said that he feels this cause he thinks he’s not “the perfect son” cause he likes boys.
Both characters feel inadequate and feel like as if they constantly let people down.
Then, later on in the Disney movie, Mulan decides to disguise herself as a man to join the army. Not cause she wants to or to prove a point, but cause she doesn’t want her father to get killed in battle. She seems to be the kind to risk her life for those she cares for. She does this again when she saves Shang during the avalanche, despite her bleeding from a stomach wound via Shan-Yu’s sword.
Similarly, Mike has been shown to be the kind of person who will risk his life to keep the people he loves safe. There’s the time in season 1 where he was ready to throw himself off the quarry to save Dustin from Troy. Then there’s the time in season 3 when he took a pipe to Billy’s back during the sauna test to save El. Then, also in that same season at the finale, bro threw his skinny ass body at Billy (who’s jacked and possessed) as a way to keep El safe and buy her time to escape the mall.
With all that said, this is something I personally want in season five. I sincerely doubt that the Duffer Brothers would do this, but a girl can dream.
I want Mike to have his Mulan moment.
Much like how Mulan developed confidence in herself thanks to her experience in the army, I want Mike to be able to grow confidence with himself and be able to accept himself for who he is (that he’s great the way his is, and that being gay and loving Will is okay).
And much like how Mulan was able to use her smarts and wits to defeat Shan-Yu, I would like to see a scene where Mike uses his own smarts and wits to come up with a plan to defeat Vecna, affirming Will’s statement in the van scene that Mike is the “Heart of the Party”. Much like how Mulan is kind of the “Heart of the Army”.
Though admittedly, a little montage or a creative time shot of Mike getting buff wouldn’t be too bad.

"Mufasa: The Lion King" Extended Synopsis Confirms "Kiara" Becoming First Disney Television Animation Character To Be Part Of Disney's ""Live Action Remakes"
In a surprising and weird present from Walt Disney Studios & Pastel Productions for Disney Television Animation's 40th anniversary, Mufasa: The Lion King a upcoming photorealistic computer-generated imagery prequel to The Lion King (2019) will incorporate aspects of The Lion King franchise created by Disney Television Animation.
The prequel film unveiled it's extended synopsis a few days ago on Walt Disney Studios website where it reads
The prequel about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, goes back to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara—daughter of Simba and Nala—the story of her grandfather while Timon and Pumbaa add color commentary.
This will mark the first time a Disney Television Animation character will be make it's way to the infamous Walt Disney Studios Live Action adaptations. coincidentally the movie opens on theaters on Disney TVA's anniversary month (December 20, 2024), additionaly Seth Rogen EP of the upcoming Disney TVA "Darkwing Duck" and "TaleSpin" reboots for Disney+ voices Pumbaa in The Lion King adaptations.
If you have missed The Lion King II: Simba's Pride was done at Disney Television Animation within its now defunct Sydney, Australia units. The Ghost And Molly McGee creators Bill Motz and Bob Roth did additional writting for the VHS sequel.

Whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I.
Born to a turbulent family on a Mississippi farm, James Earl Jones passed away today. He was ninety-three years old. Abandoned by his parents as a child and raised by a racist grandmother (although he later reconciled with his actor father and performed alongside him as an adult), the trauma of his childhood developed into a stutter that followed him through his primary school years – sometimes, his stutter was so debilitating, he could not speak at all. In high school, Jones found in an English teacher someone who found in him a talent for written expression, and encouraged him to write and recite poetry in class. He overcame his stutter by graduation, although the effects of it carried over for the remainder of his life.
Jones' most accomplished roles may have been on the Broadway stage, where he won three Tonys (twice winning Best Actor in a Play for originating the lead roles in 1969's The Great White Hope by Howard Sackler and 1987's Fences by August Wilson) and was considered one of the best Shakespearean actors of his time.
But his contributions to cinema left an impact on audiences, too. Jones received an Honorary Academy Award alongside makeup artist Dick Smith (1972's The Godfather, 1984's Amadeus) in 2011. From the end of Hollywood's Golden Age to the dawn of the summer Hollywood blockbuster in the 1970s to the present, Jones' presence – and his basso profundo voice – could scarcely be ignored. Though he could not sing like Paul Robeson nor had the looks of Sidney Poitier, his presence and command put him in league of both of his acting predecessors.

i love lion king 2
i love how we see Simba overcorrecting for his own childhood, how Kiara can recite lessons on the circle of life at the same age when Mufasa was just starting to introduce the idea to Simba
i love how Kiara is already so aware of the responsibility she'll have as ruler that, when cub Simba was bragging "I'm gonna be king of pride rock" and singing "Oh I just can't WAIT to be king!", Kiara, his daughter, who he's been raising to not make (or suffer) any of his own mistakes, instead says "But what if I don't want to be queen? It's no fun..." and sings "If there's so much I must be, can I still just be me, the way I am?"
I love how we see this PAY OFF at the end, when Kiara's sense of responsibility means she never once thinks of running off into the sunset with Kovu, no, of course she has to go back, of course she has to try reuniting both of their prides-
And maybe that's also some of Nala's spirit shining through her daughter, but really, Kiara is so much like Simba in all other ways (including her terrible pouncing, her thirst for adventure, her rule breaking) it really just feels like this is who Simba might have been if Mufasa hadn't been so confident he'd be around for his son so much longer, if Mufasa had focused more on preparing Simba for what the circle of life really means-
At The Same Time, even though it's good for the pride lands and the outlanders in the end, there's something tragic in comparing Simba and Kiara as cubs
how confident and carefree Simba got to be, how stifled and resigned Kiara ending up being, how she didn't get that kind of childhood at all thanks to her father's fear that it might be suddenly cut short, so much of Simba's talks with cub Kiara are warnings or lectures-
(when we see her play pouncing she's doing it on her own, contrast that with Mufasa and cub Simba playing together, contrast that to Simba's restraining paw scooping up his young daughter and keeping her in place)
-and even as an adult she ends up singing about how "I may not be brave, or strong, or smart" like this is more than just not being self-centered, this is depressing as heck, this girl doesn't think she's good at ANYTHING
(Timon you are not helping)
(I understand you might still be traumatized by your first meet-and-almost-eat with her mom and be worried about disappointing or hurting your adopted lion son if his cub gets hurt under your watch, but please, stop)
dear gods she never ever got to be herself without being held to the same standard as the great kings of the past
(except for when she snuck off on her own and got have a little adventure with Kovu, which she got through as HERSELF, not a princess, just a cub swatting at crocodiles and jumping on their gaping mouths just in time to save her new friend from getting eaten)
(meanwhile, Simba doesn't even acknowledge (or even hear???) her sad little line in their song together, he goes on talking about life lessons and leadership and she's the daughter of a king they are one, good, great, Simba your daughter is Distressed)
and that could have driven such a wedge between her and Simba, that could have pushed her into wanting escape and independence more than anything
except, she knows he's feeling THE SAME THING too
and we know she knows because when she wants to hurt him, to jar him, to criticize him for exiling Kovu while claiming he's doing it to follow in his father's paw prints, she tells him
"You will never be Mufasa!"
This is her fear, that she'll never be enough to be a good queen, this is also her fear, that the only way to be a good ruler is to stop being yourself
And it's what she rejects the moment she pulls a Nala and runs from pride rock alone- not to get help, but to give it- and when she returns to confront Simba with the wisdom she's learned, using the words he taught her
She looks at him, finally confident in who she is (with her back turned to the outlanders, defending them from her pride, "my father says to never turn your back on an outsider!" but she has grown since then)
she says "A wise king once told me" (Simba listen to yourself)
she says "we are one" (listen to the part of me that I learned from you)
"I didn't understand him then. Now I do" (Listen to me, now)
she says something that is true about pride landers and out landers, about Simba and Zira, about Kovu and Simba
"Them? Us. Look at them, they are us. What differences do you see?"
(between the desperation of lions on a starving land, dead loved ones, the thirst for revenge, children following in their parent's pawprints, to be so blinded by your own pain (fear, shame) that the pain of others fades away)
she asks him not to be a great king, but to see himself in them, these 'outsiders', and then to be himself in answer
And Simba listens
He looks at the daughter who had the same fear as him (Simba, who looked for guidance in the stars, saying "My father would never-" who Nala also understood so well, "Oh my Simba, you want so much to walk the path expected of you."), he looks at Kiara, who also feared that she couldn't be enough, as herself
Only... she isn't afraid anymore. She is a queen already, smart enough to find wisdom, brave enough to speak it, strong when she has to be
(he was so afraid of losing her but she had the chance to run and she came back, she came back and she is asking him, just once, to please finally-)
He listens to her. The clouds part.
We can feel Mufasa watching over them.
We look into Simba's eyes as he sees this (recall the same pattern of clouds and gazing when Mufasa told his son "you have forgotten who you are, and so you have forgotten me" and to "remember who you are")
The words Simba says as he accepts Kiara's wisdom "It's time to put the past behind us"
The lesson he learned from Timon and Pumba, this time used not to run from responsibility and pain but to face it, this hard part of his past that IS part of him
And the fact that even with all the reasons in the world to want Scar dead he still didn't want to be like him, he didn't want to kill his own uncle
(Mufasa never wanted to kill his brother, even as openly resentful and threatening though Scar was. There, the shock and horror in Mufasa's eyes as his brother betrays him- Mufasa never would have- Mufasa could have killed him any time before now, but he-)
Simba gave Scar the chance of mercy. Now, he gives it again. His daughter, his refection, his pride, has reminded him.
He looks at Kiara and he find himself in her.
He finds his father in her.
Great Kings of the past and present, great Queen of the future- Three generations and the choice of who they wish to be, and how that guides them into kindess, into mercy, into healing more harms than they cause.
Kiara speaks. Simba listens. Mufasa lives on in them
....
...then the contrast, sudden, stark, painful, of a daughter who speaks and a parent who does not listen
(Vitani says "No, mother" says "Kiara's right" pleads "Enough")
(Nuka is already dead, Kovu is scarred-)
(Their enemy no longer wants to fight, no longer IS their enemy-)
(Zira's smirk as she condemns her own daughter to death)
and the point hammered home, as the outlanders turn in disgust from their leader, that they were never evil
The point that the 'evil' which doomed Scar and Zira and Nuka (drove them on, single minded, into danger, into death) was a simple choice they all had faced. The simple question not everyone asks
Who are you?
Will you close yourself off to everyone and everything that does not feed your own conviction? Ignore anything that doesn't further your own goals?
(Nuka was loved for what he was, even if his mother never showed it. But his brother spoke up for him, his sister looked out for him, his pride all mourned him- he never needed to be the "chosen one")
(Scar was not the great king he thought he was, all around him is proof of his failure, the pridelands barren and empty, and his chance to do better, lead the lions from pride rock, make a new life- but it was never about being a good king to others. "I am the king, I can do whatever I want"- Simba's cubhood song, echoed in a lion who never learned better. Simba's offer of mercy, to let Scar escape with his life, thrown back in Simba's face (Nala's trick of always throwing off the lions who leap on her, here mirrored, saving Simba's life) and Scar, always thinking of himself, killed by his own self serving words and the hyenas he was so quick to betray)
(Zira wanting revenge for her pain, for Scar, wanting Nuka's death to be the last time Simba hurts her- Losing her daughter, because she will not stop the fight, losing her follows, because she would killed her daughter for refusing to fight... losing her life, swatting at the helping paw held out to her, only wanting to cause pain, only causing her own pain instead)
Will you cling desperately to what you have, or what you think you are owed, even when another way is offered?
Or will you listen.
(Vitani, so loyal to her mother, so vicious in her battles- Kovu's confused look as she changes her choice, choosing peace, Kiara's answering smile)
Will you see yourself in others and use that wisdom to decide who you want to be...
(Kiara, Simba, Mufasa- remember, remember)
...or who you do not want to be?
(the rest of the outlanders turning away from Zira. Their disgust at a mother who would kill her own child. The choice to leave her behind)
(the ending of the war)
I love lion king 2
it's the kind of sequel that makes me love the original more than i did before, it's so good it makes the first one even BETTER than it was on it's own
it makes the first movie sadder to re-watch
seeing how unprepared Simba really was. How Vitani proves that Scar had another way out
seeing Mufasa with his son, giving him a wonderful childhood, unaware of how has Simba will have to grow up- how long it will take him- the nightmares still haunting him- the gap between Simba and his own child thanks to his fears, his shames- (Mufasa's spirit, making leaves dancing as little tiny Kiara playfully swats at them) -Mufasa raising his son with no idea how much pain it will cause his granddaughter when Simba tries to make up for it...
...seeing all that, and knowing it still turns out okay
i wouldn't enjoy lion king 1 half as much without Simba's Pride. They fit together
i love them i love them i love them both

Sometimes I forget this is a disney blog XD so here are my thoughts on the animation news from D23! (That I know of):
Moana 2 ⛵️: trailer looked great (the big sis lil sis moment??? AAAAA (Certified sibling dynamic enjoyer over here), animation is crisp and beautiful, story sounds interesting, LOVE Moana's redesign and that there are more characters for the journey! Only worries are the repetitive elements and no LMM, but I'll keep an open mind!
Zootopia 2 🐰🦊: we only got a few small details but I'm happy to see Ke Huy Quan in another movie, plus the few images we got really reminded me how I love that film! The one image of Nick and Judy radiates such energy
Toy Story 5 🧸: look, no one loves this series more than me, and no one is more terrified of this sucking. BUT. The tech plot line sounds promising. Just hope ruining 4's alltimer sad ending is done well, somehow
Incredibles 3🦸‍♂️: we just know it's happening. Please be better than 2. Please.
Hoppers🦫: YEAH BABY THAT’S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! This shit sound crazy! Plus, We Bare Bears guy! However, I do get people's annoyance at yet another not white Animated lead spending most their time as an animal or something
Win or Lose⚾️: such creative animation, and my kind of concept! I think this could take tumblr by storm!
Tiana show 🐸: I just wanna SEE IT ALREADY
Mufasa: The Lion King 🦁: sigh... at least the acting and expressions are a little better. Skipping it anyway.
Snow White 🍎: ahem... NO. Put aside how bad it looks, the exclusion of dwarf actors, frikin Gal Gadot, or the animals straight out of a Facebook AI commercial.
