"History, as you know, is made starting from the last. You stoke their anger, you put in their hands bombs, revolvers, and if necessary…ballot pencils." — M. IL FIGLIO DEL SECOLO (2025), dir. Joe Wright

Luca Marinelli was asked about the status of THE OLD GUARD 2 (and surely it's not just going to be called "The Old Guard 2", there must be a subtitle and I guess it's something that will tease the story so they're holding it back until they can cut the trailer because by now there should be an official title).
Go on boy, give us nothing!!
And now the Luca Marinelli drought begins press starts for M. IL FIGLIO DEL SECOLO in 2025 or TOG pick-up pic drops.

Luca Marinelli will finally get free of THAT hair style. I guess he will have no hair for a while, to get rid of that bald spot. Hopefully it will grow fast, his hair is too damn beautiful, love it.

PLEASE take a few seconds to read this. I need to talk about it at least here, or I swear steam will start coming out of my ears.
For weeks now, Luca Marinelli has been surrounded, humiliated, and mocked by a large portion of Italians (spoiler: fascists, but without saying it) just because, in some interviews (interviews he HAD to do—it’s not like he volunteered—purely to promote his new high-profile project M, The Son of the Century on SKY TV), he stated that he is antifascist, that his grandmother and entire family were too, and that it was difficult for him to take on Mussolini’s appearance and portray him.
The series is outstanding, making it untouchable from a production standpoint (JOE WRIGHT is the director! The same director of Pride & Prejudice and Atonement with McAvoy).
So what did this disgusting Italian ignorance do? Of course, it could ONLY latch onto Marinelli’s words.
Words that should be completely normal in a democratic government, right? An Italian actor says it was challenging to portray a historical figure who was atrocious and horrible for Italian families themselves.
And yet… no. They attacked him, mocked him. From then until now (to the point that he was interviewed again, and he admitted that yes, of course, it hurt him because he was speaking genuinely about himself). And now that a second season is confirmed, they’re mocking him even more.
But what exactly are they saying? Well, the usual ignorance:
That he took the MONEY, so he should shut up. (He worked. Obviously, he got paid. He worked for a production team and even said he was thrilled to collaborate with them. But he still despises the historical figure he portrayed.)
That he's a nobody. (Sure, he’s not super famous outside of Italy. But in Italy, he’s REALLY well-known. He’s one of the few Italian actors who has worked with Charlize Theron, starred in an American series, won at the Venice Film Festival, worked with foreign directors, acted in LGBTQ+ projects, and performed in English, Italian, and German.)
That he should shut up (again) because other famous actors have played bad characters and stayed silent. (Completely false. Leonardo DiCaprio and even Evan Peters—who played Dahmer—have both said it wasn’t easy to portray a real-life serial killer. Plus, we’re talking about Marinelli, an Italian actor playing an Italian dictator from the 1900s, not Caesar. This is recent history, and it still carries deep wounds in our country. You can’t compare it to an "American actor" playing a fictional villain or even a real historical figure from another country—someone who didn’t harm their homeland or cause them personal pain or shame.)
That he only said it to get attention and his moment of fame. (FALSE. GUYS, GUYS, GUUUYS… we’re talking about Luca Marinelli, who DOESN’T have social media, whose private life is completely unknown, who is genuinely shy outside of acting, and who has never been involved in any gossip.)
All of this disgusts and saddens me… The only thing I’m "happy" about is that at least The Old Guard 2 is happening.

[ENG] Marinelli: “Playing Mussolini? It was painful”
The actor, on stage without pauses in the eight episodes, talks about his experience in the role of the dictator: "I didn't know how things went, I hope that M can be useful to the public".
Tumblr media
Luca Marinelli didn't just give Benito Mussolini his face, he gave him his entire soul. Present in practically every scene of the eight episodes of the series "M - The son of the century", coming soon to Sky and streaming on NOW, he climbed through dialogues without time limits and monologues that he gave shape to by looking straight into the camera, an unbelievable work and not just of interpretation: The feeling I had reading Antonio Scurati's book was of having been confronted with my gigantic ignorance. It’s healthy to confront this, never take it for granted that you always have all the answers and simplify life, because this attitude is called populism, and it was invented by Mussolini himself. It’s healthy to know the limits of our knowledge, I honestly didn’t think that things had gone this way and I hope that they push the audience towards the desire to be present to themselves, to make their own interpretations, knowing that they are not alone. “During the shooting he confesses - I would have liked to be launched on some other planet. We talked about our history, which is perhaps the most painful thing and I am very happy with what we did. It happened that in some scenes I got excited with the Duce, which generated a deep sadness in me, but I had to crush something in myself to continue to pump this dark side of evil, a process that for me was very painful. Some scenes struck me particularly, like the ones we shot in Parliament, even there Mussolini did not hide any of his aims, we filmed the speeches he made and for me repeating those words was something really scary”.
To prepare for this difficult job, the actor watched many films from the Istituto Luce “and even in their triumphant aspects I perceived the great violence of fascism, it’s wrong to treat dictators like devils or madmen, because they are people like us and we need to know them”. But it’s precisely the knowledge that is lacking in our country, starting with the education of our school system, about which Marinelli has several doubts. “I’m curious - he says - to see what the public's reaction will be to the arrival of the series. I believe it’s important to start counting on an education ‘alive’ again, but in Italy unfortunately we don’t invest in the school system and we see obvious results. I have not been a great student in my path, but honestly I don’t remember having addressed these issues, perhaps we didn’t even get there with the program and I think it’s dangerous”. After so many months spent wearing the uncomfortable shoes of Mussolini, it was not easy for the actor to get out of a role that was totally immersive. “This series - concludes - left me with the fact of wanting to be present in my present and my past. Only like this can we understand what we are experiencing today as well as going in the direction that is most useful to everyone”.

Joe Wright really had to pick Luca Marinelli to play Mussolini, huh? He really said you have to cheer for Luca cause he’s giving the performance of a lifetime but also want to throw up for the “person” he’s playing.
So much respect for him knowing he comes from a deep antifascist family and, as he said himself, it was very hard for him to get into character. Only two episodes so far but I can already say shout BRAVO.

Luca, please never stop promoting M. Il Figlio Del Secolo / M. Son of the Century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that the first two episodes are out, Italian audiences are raving about his performance. They're still being pissy about his statements on how difficult it was for him inhabiting the Il Dulce.
So people are suggesting that he just stop talking about it, when it is a far better solution for detractors to STFU and get in the sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, Luca - I don't get the outrageous, either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isn't it a good thing that he hates fascism so much that it pained him to have to inhabit Mussolini? The way people are getting so angry at Luca makes me think these people love il Duce. Luca's mindset right now.

Working with Luca [Marinelli] has been one of the great privileges of my life. I genuinely believe that he is one of the greatest actors living today. He’s certainly up there with Gary Oldman.
