This year's gingerbread house is more of a diorama lol!

I just finished making this for my uncle who has recently been diagnosed with dementia. He loves gingerbread and sweets, and I usually do a gingerbread house for him and my aunty every year, so I figured I'd go wild this time.

He requested an Aussie theme, so I did an old outback homestead based on the old settler's cottages that were built around SA. There's a magpie warbling up on the roof, while the farmer in his singlet, jeans and old hat is having a beer by the verandah post with his loyal Aussie terrier by his feet. The kids are swinging on the hills hoist clothesline and the washing has falling off. The kelpie farm dog is watching from under the verandah, too scared to get too close because the goose is upset by all the ruckus.

The chickens are unfased by it all and are scratching nearby, as is the pet sheep who's grazing behind the clothesline. There's a couple roos by the old windmill, and a nest of emu eggs. A tiger snake is slithering out from behind the house.

I made shrimp in black bean sauce!!! 😋 the pungent, deep flavor of the fermented bean paste makes this dish phenomenal. The umami is undeniably present. The fresh vegetables give it a crisp sweetness that pairs perfectly with the black bean sauce. I fried the shrimp after coating them in corn starch so they were light and crispy. The combination was delightful 😊. I served it on a bed of rice to balance the depth of flavor in the sauce. It was delicious 😋 😍 I've never made this before, but it was easy to do. Everyone should cook their own food because it gives you a very joyful satisfaction and great food. When I make my own food, I can control the amount of salt and ingredients to make it just the way I want it to be. This time, I added more onions, carrots and green peas to the dish because that's how I like it. I use recipes as guidelines, but I always add my own style and flavors to everything that I cook. In this way, I make the dish my own, and in my opinion, it tastes much better. It saves sooooooo much money, too. It's a great experience. This dish was better than the food that I get in Chinese restaurants, and it was a quarter of the price. In the words of Julia Child, bon Appétit! Food is love, and I love to cook. most food purchased from aldi is sort of mid at best but it's so cheap that with practice you are able to trick yourself into thinking it's better than it is. this is a vital survival skill
