I’ve been translating the Sherlock and co scripts to Spanish and right now I have only almost finished episode 1.

It has taken me around 3 weeks?

I'm just thinking about the evolution of Sebastian's vernacular from when the contract is first made to present day. Specifically in the change from him referring to Ciel as ごしゅじんさま ("goshujinsama") or "master" to our beloved 坊ちゃん ("bocchan") or "young master."

I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I see this as a change from a very formal title to almost a title of endearment, while retaining respect and honour. Perhaps the use of "goshujinsama" was early Sebastian's way of mocking his new master's smallness and pathetic nature in comparison to the masters that came before him. But the switch to "bocchan" is Sebastian acknowledging how young Ciel is while simultaneously acknowledging the weight of his title. That his young master wields great power despite his age and stature.

If I'm remembering correctly, Claude only refers to Alois as "goshujinsama" rather than "bocchan," perhaps implying a less-emotionally-attached bond between the two of them to contrast to Ciel and Sebastian.

I would love any input on this from folks who are more familiar with the Japanese language.

Also...just a related thought, one of my favourite things about the official English translation of Kuro is seeing how Yen Press maintains the effect of Sebastian's keigo (hyper formal speech) by writing Sebastian's dialogue as never including contractions (i.e., "can't" becomes "cannot"). It's one of my favourite details to include when writing Sebastian in fic — adds a certain uncanny, inhuman formalness to him, I think. And I'm a slut for tiny details like that.

Thinking about the bilingualism of the turtles and just realized like

The mutant mayhem turtles must have ZERO knowledge of Japanese chjzjddh. Like Splinter does have an accent (though Jackie Chan is from Hong Kong according to Google, not Japan), but he's a normal New York rat. Not Hamato Yoshi transformed into a rat, like 2012/2018, and not a pet rat that belonged to Hamato Yoshi, like 2003. Zero connection to Japan at all

I'm just imagining them all in a big crossover. 2012 gives me the vibes of being the MOST connected to Splinter's culture, so they're all bilingual (to differing degrees), they know a lot about Japanese culture and mythology and all that jazz.

2003 I think has some knowledge of the language and culture. Splinter lived in Japan with Tang Shen, and then Yoshi took him to America. If he was smart enough as a rat to pick up ninjutsu, I think he is smart enough to know the language and the bits and pieces of the culture he would witness, being... a rat.

ROTTMNT, I do not see them speaking the language or knowing much of anything about the culture, lol. They probably know some, being around Splinter, but I don't get the impression Splinter often spoke Japanese, and he didn't really train them like the other Splinters. I think they would still pick up some habits from their dad, like we see them bow to him a few times, and I bet he's made them family recipes at least a FEW times. The kids would pick up on a few words I'm sure, either from Splinter or from Lou Jitsu movies lmao, but culturally I think they know very very little. The 2012 boys would be horrified to hear them butcher the language, but on the other hand I bet they know more Spanish than 2012.

And then Mutant Mayhem... Literally not a single word. Even the Rise turtles are surprised how little they know. Except MAYBE Donnie lmao, being a huge weeb, but if he's anything like the weebs I know the knowledge of the language is... incredibly limited. Plus he's a kpoppie, so he may know more Korean than Japanese.

Summary: Silvia Salcedo is happy to fall in love with a different woman every other week. With Caoimhe Coledoc, though, the prospect frightens her. Or: a self-indulgent fic featuring my Fallen London OC Silvia and @the-insouciant-scientist's OC Caoimhe!

Mariana the lamp-cat heard Caoimhe arrive first. With a loud meow, she leapt off Silvia’s vanity and darted for the flat’s entryway. Sure enough, moments later, Silvia heard footsteps on the outside stairwell and a knock on the door. She felt herself flush. Damn. Was Caoimhe early? No, Silvia was running behind; she’d swapped her aubergine-colored suit for a terracotta one at the last moment and spent far too long arranging her dark curls to frame her face. Now there was nothing to do but sling a tie around her neck without knotting it and follow the cat.

Outside on the landing overlooking the Bazaar side-streets, Caoimhe stood in a cycling suit of blue wool serge. Her freckles and freshly-cropped hair were the color of rostygold.

“Silvia! Good afternoon. Here—someone was selling these along the way, and I couldn’t resist.” Caoimhe drew one hand from behind her back to reveal a small bunch of orange chantrelles, staghorns, and orange peel fungus wrapped in a wide slate-colored ribbon.

“Oh, Caoimhe, how lovely! Please, come in, but you really shouldn’t have gone to such trouble.”

“Nonsense. Look, they match your frock.” Caoimhe pushed the bouquet into Silvia’s hands and stepped through the doorway. Then, to the cat: “Dia dhuit, Mariana! What do you have there?”

Caoimhe scooped up the lamp-cat and held her at arm’s length. The creature was gnawing on something—and in horror, Silvia realized it was her necktie, now stained with seawater from Mariana’s paws and jaws. Silvia groaned and tugged the tie away from the cat.

“Mariana, ay, pendeja, traviesa! That’s the tie I always wear with this suit. I’m not even sure what else I have that will match!”

The lamp-cat wriggled out of Caoimhe’s grasp, and Caoimhe smiled—a small smile for anyone else, but Silvia knew Caoimhe’s expressions well enough to know that this was the investigator’s equivalent of an ear-to-ear grin. Now Caoimhe’s gaze flicked to the mushroom bouquet.

“I’ve got an idea,” she said, and took the posy from Silvia. With an expert yank, Caoimhe freed the gray-blue ribbon from the bunch of mushrooms. Then she handed the bunch back to Silvia, took a step forward, and looped the ribbon around Silvia’s neck.

Caoimhe’s hands smoothed Silvia’s shirt collar, tied the ribbon into a bow, plucked at the knot to make it fuller. All at once Silvia could scarcely breathe. She had the urge to take Caoimhe’s hands and keep them there on her chest. Fortunately, her hands were full of fungi, so she had no choice but to remain still and notice how the ribbon exactly matched Caoimhe’s eyes.

When Caoimhe was satisfied, she took Silvia’s shoulders and gently—Caoimhe was always so gentle—turned Silvia to face the entryway mirror. The ribbon matched Caoimhe’s suit as if they had planned their ensembles together. Seeing them both in the mirror, the golden mushrooms in Silvia’s tight grip, Caoimhe’s hand still on Silvia’s shoulder, Silvia felt a pang. After a moment she realized, frightened, that what she felt was desire.

Ordinarily, desire made Silvia fall into someone’s arms and damn the consequences. But with Caoimhe, a gesture like that was unimaginable. Even after two months of friendship, Silvia knew so little of Caoimhe still. A silence hung over the investigator’s past and present that Silvia longed both to dispel and protect. Their relationship was comfortable in that silence. The only interruptions Silvia could bear to make were the little attentions she and Caoimhe paid each other, not quite friendly, not quite flirtatious.

So Silvia touched the ribbon and said: “You’ve got a good eye, but I know what will make this perfect.” She plucked a chantrelle from the bunch and tucked the single mushroom into the buttonhole of Caoimhe’s lapel.

The corners of Caoimhe’s eyes crinkled. “Thank you, Silvia.” She reached out and pulled another fungal bloom from the bouquet. “When you get your jacket, I can make you a wee buttonhole too, if you’d like.”

Silvia could hardly bear the earnestness that shone from Caoimhe’s face. She turned away. “I think I’ll put one in the band of my hat. That would look nice, don’t you think? But I need to find somewhere to put the rest of these.” She looked about frantically. The table under the entryway’s mirror was stacked high with papers. Why on earth didn’t she have a vase there like a civilized person?

“If you hang them upside-down,” said Caoimhe, “they ought to keep their color and some of their smell.”

“I’ll put them on my nightstand for now, so when I wake up—” Silvia broke off. “I need to get my jacket from my bedroom, anyway. Will you wait for me?”

“Of course! I’m in no hurry. A Mahogany Hall matinee never starts on time.”

Silvia managed to laugh at that before she fled to her bedroom. There, she flung the mushrooms into an empty coffee-cup, snatched her suit jacket, dodged the cat again. When she arrived back in the entryway, Caoimhe was fastening the remaining chantrelle to the band of Silvia’s hat, taken from its hook on the wall. The twinge in Silvia’s ribs sharpened. She tried to laugh again, but it came out sounding choked, and Caoimhe knit her eyebrows together.

“I’m all right,” Silvia said. “It’s only—you’re so sweet to me, and I’m making you wait.”

Caoimhe held out the hat. “Why would I mind that? It’s only prolonging the time we spend together.”

“Caoimhe!” Silvia took the hat and shook it indignantly. “You mustn’t tease me so.”

“I wasn’t teasing! Well, maybe I was a wee bit, but I meant it, too. Shall we, then?”

There no one in the Neath handsomer than Caoimhe, who always had solemn eyes and a smiling mouth, or a solemn mouth and smiling eyes. Silvia stabbed her hatpin into her coiffure rather more emphatically than she meant to. Then she took Caoimhe’s proffered arm, allowed her to help them down the stairs.

This was all part of the game they played. The investigator and poet would walk arm in arm down the side-streets. Caoimhe would hand Silvia into the hansom cab, and Silvia would thank her with a peck on the cheek. At the theatre, the ticket-taker might think they were a couple. They’d let him.

For now, the give and take was enough for Silvia. It was enough.

It had to be enough.

I headcanon q!bbh is actually going slightly insane from being trapped on the island, and every time he calls someone Skeppy by accident or just calls him for no reason, especially while being alone, is because he actually hallucinates that he is there for a sec

Does it make sense? not that much, but it sounds interesting, it can be even more if you consider Foolish's reactions to him calling Skeppy out of nowhere or that clip of him yelling "Do i look like Skeppy to you?!" so maybe adding to the headcanon, Foolish knows of this and is both worried and frustrated about it

Why do you think Roier and Missa are easiest to understand? I found the same thing as someone who's just learning Spanish, and I wasnt sure if it was because I've watched so much Roier content that it influenced my ability to understand him, or if there's a deeper reason due to some regional accent differences being easier for non-native speakers to understand. I'm curious about your thoughts since you have really good insights into linguistics, but ignore this if it's too much for tumblr lol!

neither of them talk super fast, and imo their accents are fairly easy to understand-- for me, missa is easy to understand bc he's from the north and that region has accents i'm more familiar with, and roier's accent is somewhat neutral although obviously still clearly mexican and he uses a lot of slang. i think that also helps-- roier uses a lot of the same vocab, so if you're still learning spanish, you can pick up that slang and then understand quite a bit of what he's saying because he swears literally five times in a single sentence. they both speak pretty clearly and, additionally, i think most non-native spanish speakers, especially U.S. americans, are most familiar with mexican spanish rather than other dialects. so that's why someone like rubius or spreen is harder for nonnative speakers to understand, unless they're more familiar with spanish or argentine dialects specifically.

for me it's hard to parse bc i understand most of what they all say regardless since i've spoken spanish for so long, but i think rivers is just difficult because she speaks very fast. mariana is pretty easily to understand as well, there's just less for me to say about him tbh idr where he's from and i don't really have a hard time understanding him, i just watch him less than anyone else really.

for quackity, his accent is more noticeable, and his spanish is a little weirder, in that he is so bilingual and if you're not familiar with that way of speaking it can be hard to pick up what he's saying sometimes. this is partially why i wish there were a few more latino americans on the server so people get more familiar with that type of bilinguality-- i think quackity is in a unique position that he doesn't full share with other server members (aside from mouse, in that she is also a latino who lives in the states, although from a content perspective she doesn't do the same kind of bilingual split that q does nor does she stream in spanish), and i would be interested to see more of that kind of diasporic latino experience on the server. that's me rambling and doesn't have to do with accents i've just been thinking about it for a while and i think it would be cool. but yeah q phrases things funny sometimes because he's thinking of the english way of saying something or vice versa, and he is by far one of the most fluently bilingual members of the server, so it's an interesting dynamic for people watching him who aren't super familiar with spanish nor the kinds of calques and things that end up happening with bilingual speakers.

anyway back to your actual questions i do also think exposure does tip the scales lol most of us watch more roier than anyone else and esp for people just learning spanish, you're gonna understand him better than anyone else because of that. which is nice in some ways bc you learn a lot of slang but also if you're going to speak spanish in any kind of non-casual setting please do not talk like roier he is a fucking crazy person who swears so much it's actually unreal

with characters constantly haunted by ghosts of the past, trying to stay on top of the food chain despite constant betrayals and having their secrets held up above their heads, comes back kyle, from his long stay back as a guiding spirit on earth, to take back reigns of the throne in the inbetween. though much like everyone else, hes got a long list of dirty laundry that many are aching to reveal. there are no real friends here.

Have to say, English not being my first language is actually a blessing when writing fics.

Do I make mistakes? Absolutely. Are my typos just horrible sometimes? Yep. But my inner critic is even worse in English then I am and it can't cringe at what it can't read.

being bi/multilingual sucks because your stats are distributed across two languages and they're never equal. in one language i can summon eldritch horrors with my cussing. in another language i am the funniest and wittiest person alive. and you may be able to translate the words, but not the vibe. never the vibe. it is a curse.
