Playing in Buffalo Chicken Dip Legacy tomorrow and even though I should just register Scam I… don’t want to. So I’m not. I’m an adult, I can make bad decisions.
Decided that if I’m going to play Jeskai I need to lean into some part of the strategy harder in order to actually make it worth doing. I chose going harder on the “you can’t draw” effects and adding the second Day’s Undoing plus Dack in the sideboard to potentially Hymn my opponent while I get 2 Lotus Petals, and also steal artifacts. We’ll see if that works, if I should’ve gone on the non-basic land hate plan, or if the deck really just shouldn’t be played in bigger events right now

My very first hand of tournament legacy was force, brainstorm, ponder, daze, delver, fetch, fetch. I felt like God. Then the opponent played a cavern and named slivers

I feel like Magic would benefit from having a bigger unofficial competitive scene in the way that fighting games do with games like Smash Bros. Melee and Street Fighter Third Strike, and Pokemon has with Pokemon Showdown.
Formats like Canadian Highlander and Premodern are a good start, especially the latter as one that, unlike commander, can remain completely unofficial and Wizards can't intentionally design cards for as it increases in popularity. It simply remains exactly as it is, again similar to older fighting games like Smash Bros. Melee.
However, I do think that what a lot of enfranchised players would actually enjoy is something like Premodern (or perhaps PrePioneer or something similar). Those who hate seeing new cards, especially Universes Beyond cards, out-power older staples. However, the existing scene (especially local game store scenes) simply aren't large enough for these formats. So, people who would otherwise be more happy playing Premodern instead of Legacy or PrePioneer instead of Modern aren't as motivated to get involved. It's much easier to play something if everyone else is already playing it.
I feel like complaints about unset cards without silver borders, modern horizons, and universes beyond would be a fair bit quieter if there was a bigger, more welcoming space for people to go to that was entirely free of those elements of the game. And maybe Magic content creators who feel negatively about these things could be better served if they focused on spreading positive buzz about these formats.

Been cooking up something heinous in legacy recently that hasn't put up numbers yet but it feels just a hairs breadth away.
Theoretically can turn 1 with absolutely perfect hand, otherwise it feels perfectly fine on 2 or 3, and has some reasonable creature beats for backup
#mtgo#mtg legacy#apologies to the opponent who had to watch me strugglebus down to a single digit number of cards in library to get across the finish line

I've got the brain worms that say "You need to build a Gimbal deck in Legacy" and I cannot make them stop

Unfortunateley for digital Legacy players, this is untrue.
Scince there are digital exclusive cards why can’t there also be physical exclusive cards
There are. We call them silver border/acorn. : )

Played a 3v3 tournament yesterday with this build of Jeskai Control. I went 5-1 in played matches (we intentionally drew round 5 to lock top 8 and eat), team finished 2nd so it was a great day of getting to play legacy while sitting next to (and once across from) my friends
Matchups were diverse too, always nice.
Swiss
Mono-Red Prison: 2-1
Mississippi River (“old” build with all 6-mana cascaders): 2-1
Cloudpost: 1-2
Infect: 2-0
Mono-Black Helm: ID (didn’t know at the time but we played them in top 8)
Top 8
Mono-Black Helm: 2-0
Jeskai Control: 2-1 (mirror match in top 4 really made me feel good about sticking with it)
GW Lands: Undetermined (I lost game 1, game 2 I was going to dig for Ruination with an active Narset when my teammates lost)

The difference between Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic is that Yu-Gi-Oh like "the two decks are an ancient horror unleashed, intergalactic assholes, and a cute widdle kitty," and Magic is like "I could put two cats in a car and the car turns into this lady and she is so unpleasant my opponent just dies, or I could eat beans and summon a dragon."
#most comedic MTG decks are Boros decks#like imagine playing legacy and you just lose to some Lady with a sword or literal LoTR characters#perfection#rambles#mtg#yu gi oh
