So I know you're good at writing stories about kids (I recently read Ocean At The End Of The Lane and I'm still recovering) and from what I understood about Good Omens, the original story you sent to Terry Pratchet was about the child antichrist. You also said that Terry based a lot of Crowley's characteristics about you, and I think Aziraphale have much in common with him. My guess is that the story developed in a different direction, around the characters you and Terry enjoyed writing to most - Aziraphale and Crowley - because you were writing each other in a way. So my question is, with the new season that includes (obviously) Aziraphale and Crowley, but doesn't include Adam, what's left from your original idea?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

What I sent Terry was the first draft of the opening of Good Omens. Starting with the bit that is, in the finished mss "It wasn't a dark and stormy night." and ends about ten thousand words later with "I think he actually looks like an Adam." It had a demon called Crawley who was a lot less cool than Crowley, and in fact was a lot more like Aziraphale. Terry's idea was to split the rather sweet demon into a cool Demon and a gloriously uncool Angel.

From that point on we were co-plotting each day and co-writing -- I did more of the Four Horsemen, and of Crowley, Terry wrote more of Adam and the Them and Agnes Nutter, and mostly we were just trying to get to the next good bit before the other one could. By the end of the book both of us had written all the characters, and if we hadn't on the first draft we made sure that we had on the second draft.

Terry enjoyed making fun of some of the bits of me with Crowley. I'm not sure that there was much Aziraphale in him, although both Terry and Aziraphale (and I) all loved sushi.

So, I don't know how to answer your question. The original idea ("What if the Omen happened but a demon got the baby swap confused and the kid grew up in a lovely village?") is the plot of the book and the first TV series.

How I entered the ship, and what I see in Zutara

I want to focus more on the positive things regarding A:TLA and Zutara, so I thought, why not writing down, how I entered the MSS Zutara? Well, here it goes:

I already felt a chemistry in The Crossroads of Destiny, but my ship started during The Southern Raiders. Zuko realized that he wronged Katara the most, and I totally understand why she still couldn’t forgive him while the others already did (tbh, I think they forgave him too early. While the field trip-episodes were excellent, the pacing in between those was still too fast, IMO, along with the comet countdown).

Anyway, Zuko asks how he can make it up to Katara and helps her find closure by accompanying her, only getting involved when necessary—like when he made the wrong guy tell them about Yon Rha, just as Katara was about to give up.

Other than that, he stood aside, asked if she is ready, told her to find some rest—for me, it seemed as if he wasn’t only concerned to receive her forgiveness, but also caring about her as a person.

Plus, his line towards Sokka got me thinking: "Your sister. She hates me! And I don't know why, but I do care what she thinks of me." I mean... you could interpret it as him being at least a little interested in her, even if he doesn’t realize it...

Katara opened up to Zuko during their journey by telling him the whole story of her biggest trauma. Something she hasn’t done with anyone on screen, and showed that she already felt completely understood by him. For me, it felt like a much deeper bond she already shared with Zuko in a short time as the ones she shared with the others from the Gaang. And, finally: she received her closure in her own way with his help; and forgave him. And, I mean, that deep look after the tight embrace... hello???

On top came that this is literally the only episode when it is about Katara alone: Not Katara helping anyone or fighting for women’s rights—after she gave so much, it was the one episode only about her and her trauma alone. And who gave her the chance to do all this, bc he understood what she truly needs: Zuko.

Funny, this coincidence... This is such a typical element of Enemies-to-Lover’s. Is anyone familiar with the "A court of thorns and roses"-series by Sarah J. Maas? This happens there as well ACOTAR spoilers following, I haven’t figured out how to hide spoilers; if there is a way, pls let me know, thanks: Turns out the former enemy-guy understood the protagonist deeply, more as her soon-ex-fiancé ever could; and with his help, she got healed from her trauma. The former enemy is the one who really listens to her, who sees her as an equal, and she starts to trust him deeply, more than anyone else. End of ACOTAR spoilers 

So, yeah, that is how my ship started, and the following episodes tightened it. It was also the other way around, Katara who comforted Zuko in the most understanding way, given him strength to face his uncle and ask him for forgiveness, agreeing without hesitation of supporting him in a fight against Azula. And last but not least: Their last interaction together is saving each other's lives in the most epic way.

Long story short: They showed me a deep understanding of each other, they shared their deepest trauma or worries with the other one, and their friendship grew with every episode. And especially bc of this deep understanding, I truly believe that their relationship would be a healthy one. Would they fight now and then, like every couple? Of course, and it would get heated and passionate, for sure. But since most fights in relationships stem from a lack of understanding, I think it would happen rarely. Because they know, they can tell each other everything.

My intuition when it comes to a growing romance is mostly correct, and the Zutara-situation is so Enemies-to-lovers coded that nobody would’ve been surprised if they ended up together. I realize that not many episodes were left to build up a romance, but most Zutara shippers, like me, would’ve been pleased with a slight hint, and maybe a kiss out of adrenaline and relief after the last Agni Kai on top.

New Exhibit: The Art of Organizing in Latinx Milwaukee

UWM Archives is celebrating Latine Heritage Month with a new pop-up exhibit: “The Art of Organizing in Latinx Milwaukee.”

Featuring posters, photos, illustrations, and more, the exhibit highlights the range and dynamism of Latinx organizing in Milwaukee since the 1960s. Drawing especially on posters from the important local immigrant and workers’ rights organization Voces de la Frontera, the exhibit explores how Latinx organizers have developed a distinctive visual culture of protest as a key mode of expression for the movement’s politics and vision. A selection of historic film footage drawn from the WTMJ News Archive also dramatizes how the contemporary work of Voces organizers sits within a longer tradition of Latinx organizing.

Pictured here are three selections from the Voces de la Frontera Records (UWM Mss 356) featured in the exhibit, including poster prints by Favianna Rodriguez and John Fleissner, and a photograph captioned “Mother, Child, Labor Law.” We’ll continue to feature highlights from the exhibit as we move through the month.

Steph spins her chair, balancing her elbow on the arm and cradling her chin in her hand. She thumbs her phone open. One unread message in the group chat she shares with Jason and Tim.

He doesn’t bother with Cass. Their conversations happen in full emoji, like modern hieroglyphics. Steph gives herself an 80% chance of correctly deciphering them.

With the rest of them, Tim uses words. Or, well. Something approximate to words, chopping them down to their basest parts. It’s kind of entertaining, especially when it makes both Bruce and Jason furrow their brows in exactly the same way.Not that Steph would ever point that out. She has some sense of self-preservation.

Steph will always be a little bit in love with Tim Drake.

It’s something she’s come to accept about herself, the same way she accepts that her curls will always have a mind of their own, that her stretch marks are here to stay, and that her left knee will always ache before it rains.

She also knows that it’s best they stay just friends. Not that that’s a hardship, or anything. Tim is a hell of a lot better friend than he was a boyfriend—though in hindsight, Steph can admit she wasn’t a stellar girlfriend, either. They were young and dumb—or, well, younger and dumber—and now their history was too fraught to ever think about trying again.

Steph loves being Tim’s bestie, even when that means biting her tongue about his relationships.

Especially with Jason Todd of all people.

Steph can honestly say she never saw that coming.

Like, sure, okay. He’s hot. Steph can admit that, she’s got eyes.

He’s the kind of guy you could actually climb like a tree—tall and broad and thick to boot, with thighs made for biting and pecs Steph is pretty sure would fit nicely in one of her bras. He’s also handsome, in a rugged sort of way, with his twice broken nose and the scar curving up his cheek and his full, kissable lips. His curls always manage to be perfect, too—artfully messy, even when he falls asleep on the couch or takes off that helmet of his.

It’s enviable, really.

Some day she’ll ask him his secret.

But… Steph always kind of saw him as a walking bad idea. The kind of guy baby Steph would have adored, which… Steph loves baby Steph—or she’s trying to—but she had shit taste in men. And Jason, with his leather jackets and guns and daddy issues (and mommy issues too, come to think of it)—

He certainly fit the bill.

Except—

Despite all outward appearances… Jason is a good guy. He’s smart, and funny, and passionate, and kind, and—

Ugh.

Steph kind of hates him a little.

Because, like. Steph can handle thinking about Jason sometimes, in a not-so-friendly, maybe-a-little-bit-sexy way. Tim, too—or even both of them together. Maybe sometimes it gets a little awkward but… Fantasizing is human, and Steph is an adult. She can picture them fucking her and each other six ways to Sunday, doing whatever the raunchiest part of her brain cooks up, and still behave normally around them after.

She’s a grown woman. Her hormones are not the fucking boss of her.

So. Attraction? Handled. Steph has that shit on lock.

What she cannot handle is—Feelings.

A great video on some beats in the bolognese school of fencing, and while not everything is the same for some other systems we can definitely see similar actions, especially tactically within Meyer’s version of KDF(kunst des fechtens - art of combat), and these principles can be applied very similarly to various other weapons too.

Giovanni Dall'Agocchie is a great facebook group for folks interested in the various Bolognese sources and Ilkka Outo is a youtube channel with lots of information.

And  Antonio Manciolino, Achilles Marozzo, Angelo Viggiani, Giovanni dall'Agocchie, Filippo Dardi, Guido Antonio di Luca and Anonimo Bolognese (MSS Ravenna M-345/M-346) are some useful wiktenauer pages to check out to learn more about the general systems of bolognese fencing.

I'm an illustrator working on my portfolio and I plan to query agents in a few months, which is so exciting!! I've also experimented with writing and I have a couple PB manuscripts (that got decent feedback when I was doing 12x12), but I'm not as confident in my writing as I am in my illustrations. Would you pass on an illustrator you liked because they also submitted manuscripts you didn't like? Or would you say, hey, I'll represent you as an illustrator but, girl, your writing is trash! Lol.

This is normal, just so you know. Great illustrators, who have spent however long going to art school, sketching, practicing, honing their craft, etc? Most of them are not ALSO just naturally amazing picture book writers. That takes a lot of skill and practice, too!

(Picture books are, in fact, QUITE HARD to write! I would say that there are many great writers in other categories who would be hard-pressed to write a great picture book! This is not a skill most people have!)

Point being: Agents are aware that many illustrators are still building up the writing piece and are quite used to working with illustrators editorially. If we love your artwork, it's worth it to spend that extra time helping you get your writing there, too -- and while we're doing that, we can hopefully sell illustration projects for you!

SO, I think if your main goal is to be an author-illustrator, you should query agents who do BOTH illustrator-only and author-illustrator clients (like lots of agents at my agency do for example!). So not artists reps -- literary agents who do a lot of illustration projects.

(I say this because artist's reps/illustration agencies often REALLY focus on the illustrations, which is great, and maybe would help you get non-book opportunities as well -- but they often have less focus on the WRITING piece and less deep connections in book world on the editorial side. Also they charge a higher commission!)

So you've chosen your literary agents, and now you have two options -- either of which would be fine, you just decide!

a) You lead with the illustration -- just query as though you are an illustrator-only client. And SAY in your letter something like "I'm querying as an illustrator today; I'd love to illustrate [examples: quirky picture books, young graphic novels, chapter book spot art, book jackets -- whatever your things are!] -- but my ultimate hopeful goal down the line is to also create my own author-illustrator projects. I've been working on a couple of manuscripts of my own, which I'd be happy to share if you're interested, though they are definitely still works in progress". That way they know that you know that the text part is not your main thing, you aren't expecting them to DO anything about those mss right this second, it's just IF they want to see it. (Which they probably WILL -- but they wouldn't be judging you based on those, they would really just be considering you as an illustrator) OR...

b) If you have a good sketch dummy of one of the picture books -- you have worked hard on it, you are proud of it, it's gotten good feedback -- (and I don't mean loosey-goosey illegible sketches, OR finished art -- I mean tight sketches with maybe one or two pages of full color) -- go ahead and query that dummy. Just be VERY CLEAR in your query letter that you consider yourself illustrator-first -- be sure to also include all the info as though you were querying as an illustrator -- links to your beautiful online portfolio, website, etc -- and SAY in the query something like, "I began in illustration, so the writing piece is still fairly new to me; While my ultimate goal is to be an author-illustrator, I'm also very much open to illustrating other people's texts, and I'm happy to start with illustration-only as I hone my writing skills" That way they know that the dummy is sort of a "FOR EXAMPLE" of the KIND of work you do, that you are open to doing other stuff while you work on the writing piece, etc.

Either way, again, is fine. just make sure you are leaning heavily on the ILLUSTRATION!!! part, and be open/flexible/not-uptight about the writing part, and they will totally understand. GOOD LUCK! <3
