A bet to know
Bianca Barclay x fem!bookworm!reader
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: A bet originally meant to set Bianca up with her ex turns two different worlds on their heads.
warnings: false pretense for a relationship, excessive use for periods, everyone is a bit of an asshole,
A/N- constructive criticism is appreciated
y/n walked in the forest on her usual way to the meadow, she held up her flashlight lighting the rest of the way once she entered the field she laid her picnic blanket on the grass taking her copy of ‘pride & prejudice’ out of her tote bag.
The bright full moon illuminated her pages. Focusing more on the book instead of the howling that filled the air, she was snapped out of her imagination when she heard her name “Hmm, do you know that girl,y/n?”y/n stayed silent “yeah I've seen her around” the voices sounded distant and for some reason, y/n could faintly recognize the voices “ okay good you have to make her fall in love with you without using siren song, and I'll get you a date with your ex ” the quiet silence was deafening “ill do it” the other voice said.
With that y/n stood up and packed her things. the walk back to campus was silent, emotions racing through her mind as she sneaked back to her bedroom ‘alright I at least know they're a siren’ she thought. she continued to wander until she felt her eyelids getting heavier.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
y/n awoke to a ray of sunshine shining through her window slowly rising she was grateful that it was Sunday. she had plans to go to the weathervane and then go to the old run-down book store near the farmers market but she still had to pass through ms Thornhill's class to turn in late homework.
three load knocks ricochet off her walls "whose there!?" "guess who" that soft voice could only belong to one person "yokooo" y/n's whine served as an invitation for the vampire "sooo what's the plan for today?" Yoko said while sitting down next to y/n "hmmm, just the usual" wait did you already finish the book you were reading?" y/n raised from her place under the blanket "not really" her voice was comfortably raspy for the late morning "well my little social butterfly, time to get up" laughter could be heard down the hall when Yoko pulled the blanket off y/n
their tug-of-war game ended when y/n pushed Yoko out the door and began getting dressed once she stepped through the doors y/n asked "so what are you doing today?" she began to walk "hmm nothing much just going to the lake. what about you ?" y/n found her tone of dishonesty curious "just turning in the homework from Thursday and going to Jericho" y/n waved goodbye to her vampire friend as they parted ways
as y/n turned the corner she heard a familiar voice "what do you think I should do?" the same voice from the night before said for a brisk second y/n thought about storming into the room but after minutes of consideration she decided not to. 'if they want to use me then ill GIVE them something to use" she thought continuing her stride towards the greenhouse
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"excuse me .. ms. Thornhill" y/n called out to the seemingly empty greenhouse "oh hi y/n," Thornhill said hastily 'weird' y/n thought "here's the homework from Thursday " "oh, is that all?" y/n thought for a second "yep, bye"
After all her chores were done y/n began heading down the stairs "no but seriously where does she usually hang out" the mysterious voice said "what will you give me if I tell you" wait a minute, was that Yoko? "I'll cover for you next time you sneak out." "like you don't already do that" laughter exploded from the archway between y/n and the pair "fine fine she usually hangs out in the library but today shes going to the weathervane" hearing this y/n felt a bit offended that a friend would give up her information so readily.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"A mocha latte, please" y/n stated paying the cashier after grabbing her latte she made a sharp turn toward the exit and bumped into a speeding form "oh sorry," that voice sounded like the person that was talking with took “it’s alright”
y/n quickly exited the cafe her coffee slightly burning her hand and the cool autumn breeze burning her cheeks
on her way to the book store y/n's brain was full of rampant thoughts of piercing pale blue eyes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"y'know you gotta finish all your books before you buy new ones" a sharp laugh came from y/n's mouth "orrrr I could continue to build my tbr" y/n flashed the cashier a toothy smile "yeah yeah. did you bring me something?" tina teasingly said "hmm... no" y/n saw tina's face physically deflate "you know that my lunch break isn't for another 3 hours" although It was true tina couldn't help but smile seeing that y/n strayed away from the register towards the romance section
" speaking of the weathervane, do you know ....." a flash of dark brown moved outside of the window and y/n pointed "her" the bookworms voice sounded of soft poison "isn't she like the queen bee of your school" the air had a mix of old book smell and tina's vanilla perfume "oh yeah" y/n sounded off task when she answered.
The jingles rustled when another occupant entered the store "hi welcome to Jericho & hyde, can I help you with anything?" said tina's sickly sweet customer service voice "no thanks just looking" said a deep and soft voice, one y/n knew too well.
a million possibilities rushed through y/n's head "hey" the voice came from y/n's right and was slightly hushed "oh hi " the bookstore was dead silent "can I help you with something?" Bianca flashed y/n a charming smile "yeah actually I do" tina made a small cough and stepped into the back part of the store without another word "do you know any good books on romance" y/n almost forgot who the girl in front of her was when her eyes showed her eagerness to share her favorite book. almost. the eagerness turned into careful calculating malice. "yeah but it isn't sold in this store "
"hmm alright"

Find the Word Tag
Thanks for the tag @catchingbigfish!
I'll tag @dogmomwrites, @ahordeofwasps, @dontjudgemeimawriter, @writingpotato07, @fearofahumanplanet, and anyone else who wants to jump in on this tag game with the words team, think, study, water, and appear. As always, no pressure, though!
My words are dare, rule, crisis, star, and surround. I couldn't find the word star in this draft, but here are some snippets for the other words! (A couple of them had to be cut real short because they were surrounded by spoilers RIP)
DARE
It was hard to see much of anything in the dimly lit apartment, but I didn’t dare try to turn on a light. By some miracle, I managed to stumble my way into the kitchen without tripping over my own feet and making my headache even worse by bonking my head against the floor. Squinting through the darkness, I managed to stumble through the kitchen enough to poor myself a bowl of cereal. I turned towards the fridge so fast that a few pieces of chocolaty cereal flew out of the bowl and onto the floor, but I didn’t bother trying to clean them up. That was a problem for future April.
RULE
My fists curled into tight little balls. My shoulders rose and fell dramatically. It took practically all of my willpower not to straight up launch myself at her. When I spoke up, I struggled to keep myself from yelling. “I told you to get a hold of your sidekick.” Ms. Psychic spared a little glance towards Hermes before turning back towards me. “Hey.” She stepped forwards to put herself between me and the little twerp. “Hermes didn’t mean anything. He just doesn’t know his own strength sometimes.” I shot Hermes another little glare. “You’re just lucky I have a no stabbing children rule.”
CRISIS
My shoulders rose and fell, and my hands started to shake. By some miracle, I managed to duck inside the clothes rack and teleport out of there so that I could have my mini-crisis in a nice secluded alleyway instead of in the middle of the convenience store.
SURROUND
Surrounded by all those rich ass-wipes, I’d just be itching to toss someone’s spine into a trash compactor, but all by myself, I was free to go about my leisurely stroll, only stopping occasionally to press my face up against one of the shop windows to take a look at the displays inside.

Game Pile: Gazillionaire
In 1994, the videogame company Lavamind released the game Gazillionaire, which was in its purest form a sort of spreadsheet software with a random number generator built in. A bunch of trading companies kick off at the same point in time engaging in transport and trade. You go to a planet, which has its own weirdo economy and its own current supply and demand of goods, buy what you want, sell what you want, and head off to a new location to make a profit on those goods. There are all layers of complexity here, with things like warehousing and random events along the way, and every planet has its own specialised services and its own stock market you can use to invest in.
And it looks
like
this.
There’s an impulse when you talk about older videogames to talk about them with the assumption that there’s something about the games of the past, something about those games that can hook into your mind and captivate you regardless of how the game looks, or how its older systems might be pretty rough. Interface is a big one — a lot of games from this period predate the development of even standardised mouse behaviour! I don’t want you to look at this game and think, oh hey, Talen likes this game a lot, there must be something here.
There isn’t.
I promise you, there isn’t. Gazillionaire is not a game with some incredible deep-set mechanic that you have to marinate in to really appreciate. It is a game of unfair surfaces and entirely random opportunities. It is a very slow lottery ticket, where you’re kind of just hoping to not get unlucky in the right chain of events while you do your chores. It is a gameplay loop that is so fast and so meaningless you actually zip through whole planets without noticing them. The game has a system for making it so you don’t need to engage with chunks of interface and flavour because the game is well aware you don’t care, you just want to do things and get to the next turn.
You could probably remake Gazillionaire very easily. I sometimes wonder about how hard it would be to make a version of it with stock assets that doesn’t look awful. I’ve even considered how much this game could be replicated by something I know how to use, or how hard it would be to learn a software system that lets me make a game like Gazillionaire. I even made a version of something in it, in my game Freight Expectations. What that game has going on is a relationship between supply and demand and funny cargo material terms, but it lacks things like the random events in this game, and it lacks the game’s scope – you don’t choose where you go to trade.
Why does it look like this? It looks like this because it was made in 1994 by a tiny development team using a programe like MS Paint. No jokes. The art assets haven’t been updated, and quite frankly, I’m kinda glad of it. This is a franchise with the kind of art budgets that quietly looks like it’s one suggestion away from using Midjourney to update all of its assets, if only that spending that much time would be more money than Gazillionaire deserves.
Gazillionaire is a game that’s undeniably a product of its time. Its original incarnation worked by using the Windows 3.1 interface to put everything in its own unique window, with its own scrollbar. The game was made for an interface 320×240, which is this big:
The sounds in the game were .wav files, optionally stored, and whenever you did something that caused a sound effect (which included the ‘whoosh’ of travel and the “Ahah!” of Mr Zinn’s loan repayments), the game would seize for a moment because it was loading an application to play the sound, then closing it. This meant that paying off your loan was a high priority because it sped up the game in terms of loading time. I wonder if this game helped build in me the fear of ever getting loans because interest rates feel like they get away from you inherently. Oh wait that was probably the conservative Christian upbringing.
When I found out that it’d been ported to Steam, I was pretty excited because I thought that I could return to this game, this game that I had played as a kid and I could finally get around to finishing it. After all, I remembered really liking it! In fact, I remembered wanting a game like it, something where I could Just One More Turn for a bit, and, haha, now I was an adult, with the full version of the game, I could probably finish it properly, right?
right?
Once I finished balking at the idea of spending $30 on a 30 year old game that still looked awful and wasn’t available as abandonware any more (and I’ve got my own beef about that), I got it installed, played through it and decided to make good on a promise of decades past.
Reader, I still haven’t finished a single game of Gazillionaire. I’ve found the way the game is unwinnable and quit, I’ve run out of steam on a game, and I’ve found myself spending so much time on it that I quit the game and leave it! It is a game that I realised I was playing as part of an avoidance loop. That sometimes, I play a game like this, a game that’s fast and easy to play, and then find that I’ve spent an hour doing it in which I can’t remember anything I’ve done. I have been playing a single videogame for nearly thirty years at this point and I do not think I’ve ever finished a single play-through!
I don’t have it installed on this computer right now because I wanted to stop getting distracted by it!
Games let us learn about ourselves.
I learned I’m kinda bad with money and also, I fall into a particular kind of mental rat trap, very easily.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

Love Doesn't Do Encores Ch17 Return To Hammerlocke
Tumblr media
To say you hated flying anywhere now would be an understatement. YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY DETESTED IT!! The only reason you agreed was because it was already paid for and because it was the fastest way back to Hammerlocke. Woo hoo. You weren't really in the mood for more video game-..Uh. Strangers flirting with you, but at least Ms. Opal was nice company on the way there and it was very nice of her to pay for the entire ride over to Hammerlocke. You and Gloria buckled in on one side, with your Drizzilie and her on the other. When you all left Bellonlea you were a bit more cautious of your slow pace with her as you walked along the beautiful woods to leave, and kept snapping your head about keeping an eye out for any Team Yell members or that looney guy again. It was nerve wracking to say the least. Luckily you didn't run into neither when you finally got back to the lamp posts and the entrance into the forest. The corviknight and it's owner were fast asleep in one of the shadows of the trees before being woken up by Opal tapping him with her umbrella and requesting he take all of you to Hammerlocke. And after steeling your nerves and guts, you all piled in and did just that....for the next four and a half DAYS!! Opal had just relaxed back with her eyes closed most of the trip leaving you and Gloria to quietly talk between you two(when you weren't gripping your seat and forcing yourself to not look out the windows-) or more commonly watch more videos on her phone. Opal remaining silent and you would've sworn she was asleep if she hadn't opened her eyes whenever Gloria talked to her and talked back to you both in a polite but right to the point kinda way. Never heard anyone talk quite like her. You also made a few pitstops every few towns, mostly at night to let the driver rest and you have time to eat something at the local inn without having to worry about getting air sick for a while, before it was back to the fear inducing ride. You swore when you got back you were NEVER EVER going hang gliding, or even travel by plane after this. You also learnt within that time Opal was apparently looking for a successor to take over her gym soon and the person had to have something 'pink'...Whatever she meant by that. Eventually Gloria also found a good way to distract you away from your fear for short periods of time by the third day when she asked if there was anything you really liked listening too.
You blinked kinda surprised by her but shrugged and said, "Well, I've always loved music. In fact I wanted to go into the industry when I was your age."
She seemed surprised at your answer and even Opal cracked open a eye towards you silently. "Really? Why didn't ya ever say anythin' before?"
You shrugged with a slight frown. "Eeeeehhh. It's kinda...Complicated. I wouldn't say I'm bad but I'm not good enough of a singer for me to make a career out of it, and I can't really play any instruments too well. Unless you count the kazoo."
"What about a song writer? Bet you'd be good at that."
You shrugged. "I tried, but I'm not that creative enough to figure that out. But I am pretty good at working speakers, and I know a lot about how instruments are made and how they work. So I was going to get a business liscense and try to open by own Music Store."
"Well why didn't you?"
You paused at her question for a moment. You couldn't just say "Because I got sucked into an alternate dimension where pokemon happens to be real based off a game I used to play" unless you wanted them to think you were crazy!! Thinking quickly you shrugged and told the truth. "I left home around the time I was supposed to and started traveling." Which was the truth even tho you weren't sure exactly how you left or how to get back.
"Huh. Well I guess everyone wants ta see the world and do somethin' excitin'," Gloria said with a smile and you sighed in relief. Before she held up her phone to you. "If ya like music how 'bout I show ya more of Piers's songs? It'd be a good way ta pass the time. He's written n' sung LOTS of 'em."
You blinked....Piers?? OH! That Piers. "Oh. You mean the gym leader you told me about? I think I remember you showed me one of his songs back at Postwick."
She nodded. "He's a good musician. Ya wanna see some?"
"Sure why not?"
And thus the two of you relaxed back a little more now that you could watch this Piers person singing and mostly rock music filled the taxi cab for most of the remainder ride there. Of course you two made sure Ms. Opal was fine with it and after cracking an eye open said she didn't care at all. While you two watched him you had to admit his unique voice added to whatever vibe the music was with the accent he had melting among it....But when you looked at his blue eyes and pale-ish skin..you couldn't shake the feeling of deja vu that you've seen him before. Which you brushed off because of course you had seen him before when Gloria showed you a video of him performing with a band back at Postwick. Besides, you had more important things to worry about. Like getting home and right now getting to Hammerlocke in one piece. Which also happened the very next day. Gloria had pointed it out early in the morning when she looked out the window and pointed but you couldn't get yourself to look down in fear of losing your breakfast, clutching the seat tightly and praying the landing wouldn't be the same as the last time you landed. Luckily whoever was listening to your prayers answered them because other than one rough shove from the corviknight putting the cab on the ground, the decent and landing proceedure was pretty smooth. THANK GOODNESS!! When you finally peered out the window you were greeted with one of the entrances/exits to Hammerlocke. In fact it was the same one you two had traveled Route Six out of to head to Stow-on-Side. A Gym League staff worker awaited by the entrance, most likely for their badge rule too no doubt.
The taxi driver was quick to hop down and open the door for you three as well. "We're here ladies. Hope the trip was alright for you."
"Thank you, Young man," Opal commented slowly getting up and leaving the cab with you and Gloria right behind her. Once out she breathed a sigh of fresh air before looking up at the castle like town, "Hammerlocke. Always such a dusty town. Though I suppose some pokemon prefer it that way. "
Without even looking back to you she began slowly walking off towards the entrance, and you two slowly followed with Opal in front of you two. She was easily able to walk past the man who stood at the entrance but like the last time you were here, stopped Gloria, asked if she was a Gym Challenger, and then asked to see her badges. Opal continued walking as the two of you stopped and Gloria had to dig through her backpack to show the man her badge circle of five badges attached to it. With a nod you both were let in and she stuffed it back into her bag as you two continued off after Opal. And you looking around nervously keeping an eye out for Raihan just in case. ....But it seemed as Ms. Opal disappeared as you two walked along and looked around.
"Where did she go?," you asked peeking into the window of a cafe as you walked by but she wasn't in there. "She wasn't that far ahead of us."
Gloria shrugged as she looked at the people walking by. "She said she had some errands ta run so maybe she ducked into one o' these shops."
Hm. Maybe. You both continued walking and looking around as you neared the corner where the pink pokemon center you remembered seeing. As you two got closer and closer to the corner, someone with white fluffy hair and a giant pink coat rounding the other side of the corner onto the street on which you both walked. Both of you froze upon realizing the identity of the person who was walking towards the both of you. And he too froze lavender eyes blinking widely at the both of you as well as his jaw dropped somewhat. ...Before he pointed at you two with a large scowl.
"YOU!?"
"Uh...Hey, Bede," Gloria greeted with an awkward wave.
His scowl deepened as he shouted at her. "Come to gawk at me now that I've had my challenge band taken away and my gym challenger status revoked?!" ...WHAT!? Both your eyes widened as you looked at one another. Bede growling in frustration before gripping his fluffy white locks. "I've had to spend the past days working under that despicable Raihan person as 'punishment' for what happened in Stow-on-Side!! Do you know how much that idiot makes you work doing the most ridiculous things!? And now I run into you here too! Can you really afford to waste time like this?!"
"HEY!" Gloria scowled as well pointing a hand at him. "I was the one who saved your bloody sorry self from bein' crushed by a rock after you decided to play contruction worker with the mural! If it wasn't for me you'd be flatter than a waffle under yer own mess!!"
He scoff and turned his nose away. "Well....I suppose so. You no longer have to worry about catching up with me after all." His eyes narrowed at her. "I'll have you know though that I haven't given up! I must become the champion in order to help out the chairman! I will go and ask him to let me rejoin the gym challenge!"
"Again with the Chairman, mate?," Gloria sighed letting her arms flop to her sides as she turned from a scowl to a pitied look. "Look Bede. I dunno what to tell ya. It's kinda useless to keep wantin' ta help someone who kicked ya out of the challenge. Tho considerin' what ya did I'm not surprised that's what happened. Maybe ya should just forget 'bout the guy altogether."
He gasped offended a hand to his chest. "How dare you insult my reasonings with your twisted nonsense! Any girl who'd even consider fighting for my affection wouldn't be so brazen!"
"What are ye goin' on 'bout now?!"
"Hm? That boy." You jumped as the two kids still argued with one another, whirling around to face none other than Ms. Opal herself and she was staring right at Bede with curiousity in her eyes. ..Wait. Where the heck did she come from!? "Now that's what I could call pink! So sincere and straightforward yet so twisted and misguided. I like it! That's the kind of thing that gives people some depth!" Eventually Bede looked up from Gloria and had to do a double take blinking in confusion at the new arrival. "Time for my gym mission, Child!"
"HUH!?" Bede asked leaning back in confusion and surprise at what the older woman just barked at him. "W-Wha-!?"
You yelped as suddenly with speed you didn't think she had Opal RAN past you and up to Bede who froze in place wide eyed as she looked him over. "Pink! Pink! Pink!" She shouted as she examined him. ...What did 'Pink' even mean!? She chuckled a bit examining the frozen boy's dynamax band before looking up to him with a smile. "Congratulations, Child."
"M-Ms. Opal!?," Bede sputtered out pulling his hand away from her as he looked uneasy leaning away. Wait. Bede knew who she was? "What in the world has gotten in you?!"
"You were used by Oleana. Am I right?" Bede froze once again and behind her both of you exchanged bewildered looks behind them. Opal took his silence as a yes because she hummed and nodded. "You worked hard to gather wishing stars for her only to have her throw you away like rubbish once she was done with you." Wait...How did she know that? "Come with me, Child. I might be able to help you out." She offered.
And Bede ...blinked. "I...W-What?" He shook his head before frowning. "A-Are you saying you'd be able to get me reestablished back into the challenge?"
She chuckled and nodded. "Of course, it all depends on how much hard work you're willing to put in too."
"Are you...Are you testing me?," Bede challenged before clearing his throat and shaking his head, hands tucked into his pockets as he attempted to look calm. "Very well. I accept! In fact I plan on making sure you see my full talents and tell me everything you know about the wishing stars!"
She chuckled again before smiling wider. "I think my errands to Hammerlocke have been met." Taking a moment she turned to Gloria who blinked at her. "Farewell for now, Child. You should head to Circhester. I take it you know how to get to Route Seven." And she turned away back towards Route Six and simply began walking away. Like nothing that happened just happened.
Bede made to follow but paused before turning back to Gloria who still watched silently- Before clearing his throat and turning away again. "I-I still haven't decided what to say to you officially. I'll need more time to think and at the moment I-I'm way too busy! So d-don't follow me around!"
Gloria's brow rose more clearly confused. "Uh....Alright." You both watched as he jogged on after the older woman before she blinked and turned to you with a shrug. "What was that all about?"
......You smiled. "Oh nothing. I think they'll both be fine. I have a good feeling about this." You turned and nodded towards the train station. "C'mon. It's still morning so we'll have to wait for the afternoon train. If I remember right there's a food section in the train station. We can grab a bite there."
Gloria was quick to agree with the promise of food and you two headed off towards the station. To be honest you were looking forward to food too that wasn't bland or dried tasting camping food. You had eaten enough food like that to last you a hundred lifetimes. Without having to wait for Ms. Opal anymore the two of you could walk a little faster now and were easily near the station as you continued to look around for any signs of Raihan but thankfully still found none. When you were stopped by Gloria grabbing onto your sleeve and pointing. You blinked confused at her for a moment before looking to where she was pointing and you couldn't help but stare as well. NO WAY!! Who'd think you'd run into her again while you were here? It was Sonia! Again! She must've just walked from the station because she was coming right towards the both of you, but stopped once she took notice of the familiar sight. The three of you pausing and looking at one another before the redhead smiled and waved.
"Heya!," She greeted once she was close enough, "Fancy running into you here. The badge collecting going well?"
"Sonia!," Gloria happily exclaimed in surprise before nodding proudly. "I don't mean ta brag." She crossed her arms proud of herself. "But I won me two more badges since the last time I saw ya!"
Sonia chuckled at her antics and you asked, "What are you doing back in Hammerlocke?"
She turned her attention to you one hand on her hip. "I've been doing some research on the ruins in Stow-on-Side. The sword and shield. Once Mr. Rose had his team investigate it of course. ..But I still haven't figured out some things. What kind of Pokemon were they? And where are they now?" With a sigh she shook her head. "I still have so many questions. I was thinking about taking another look at the tapestries in-"
BOOM!! Sonia was cut off as what you could only describe as a gunshot from a gun the size of an elephant going off somewhere overhead. The very action made you react immediately by ducking and grabbing the back of your head as your Drizzilie dove behind you in terror at the loud noise and shaking of the ground. Gloria gasped and fell backwards onto her behind and Sonia had jumped back nearly falling over on those heels of hers. Blinking up and totally but understandably SHOCKED at the sensation you had just witnessed. Another boom!? AGAIN!? ....Oh NO!! Was that Bede again!? Was he doing something crazy again!? Other people around you yelling or having a similar reaction to one of you three.
"AGAIN!?," you asked to no one in particular.
"Are you kidding me!?," Sonia shouted herself glaring up towards a particular tower, "What was that!?"
"Do I look like I know?," you mumbled slowly leaning yourself up as Gloria made an attempt to get off the ground.
"Hammerlocke stadium shook...That's where Chairman Rose's power plant is isn't it?" You...nodded. You think so? It's been a while since you've been back here. But there wasn't any time for talking as a buzzing sound eminated from Sonia's pocket. She was quick to scramble, almost dropping the phone in the process, as she pressed the screen in a hurry and the buzzing noise ceased. .....Her blue eyes blinked widely at the screen. "Huh?....A..power spot?"
"Power spot?" You asked confused. "You mean like where you can Dynamax?"
She nodded not looking at you. "That's right. The power spot detector reacts when it's possible to dynamax."
You rose a brow. "Well that makes sense since there's a gym stadium here. You mean Raihan can't use the stadium's spot to dynamax?"
She went to answer but didn't get a chance too. "Usually you don't."
"GAH!!" You jumped in surprise and snapped your head around to the person who scared you...And came face to face with none other than the Champion. Leon chuckled seeing your expression...before you scowled. "HEY! I thought I asked you NOT to do that the last time!"
He chuckled some more before waving a hand. "Sorry, Y/n. Hey Sonia- Oof!" He laughed more and patted the top of Gloria's head as she hugged him beaming. "And you too, Gloria! Wow. You've gotten taller! By the way you felt the shaking right?" She nodded and he hummed before looking at the same tower Sonia had been. "Seems Chairman Rose is testing something again."
"This is bad!," Sonia insisted to him, "Pokemon might start dynamaxing right in the middle of Hammerlocke!"
"Is that so?," he asked looking back to her and she nodded immediately, "I can make sure the Chairman knows."
"You'll just get lost, Leon. I'm coming too."
"Hey. I'm not THAT bad with directions, Sonia. I only ended up on top of a barn once!"
"I'm comin' too!," Gloria piped up determined hands returning to her sides. But that melted away quickly when Leon shook his head no.
"Sorry, Glory," he apologised genuinely and rested a hand on her shoulder," But it'd be too dangerous for someone your age to be wondering about a power plant of all things. Especially since there's lots of research and development happening in there that could end up going south at a moment's notice. Don't worry about a thing and just let me take care of it. Ok?"
She opened her mouth to protest. "He's right." But blinked at you as you frowned worried. "I think with everything that's already happened in the past month, it'd be better to just let the literal pokemon champion and a scientist handle whatever's going on."
She blinked between the two of you for a moment before sighing. "Oh alright."
"So you should leave the investigation on the quaking to the adults," Sonia agreed, "In the mean time why don't you head to Circhester and get that badge? I'm really looking forward to seeing you compete in the finals."
Again Gloria nodded before turning to Leon with a slightly worried expression. "Hey. You're gonna be careful right?"
He smiled brightly in a reassuring way to her. "Of course! I'm always careful!"
"Except with directions." Sonia sighed before beginning to walk away.
"HEY! I'm always careful with directions," he insisted walking after her, "Since when am I not?"
"Says the one who got stranded on top of a barn and fell into the ocean multiple times when going to Hulbury."
"Oh my Arceus. It was just one time!"
You chuckled before shaking your head..but paused noticing Gloria wasn't doing anything but staring after them. She flinched when you put a hand on her shoulder. "Hey. Are you alright there?"
After a moment of silence she sighed and nodded before turning back towards the train station. "Yeah. Jus' a lil bit worried is all. Lee can get inta trouble if he ends up lost sometimes." And she began walking. "C'mon. Let's go get somethin' to eat. Ok?''
You blinked at her sad-ish tone but didn't push any further when you started walking behind her towards the train station by the flight of stairs leading to the Hammerlocke school where you two had encountered Paula. Sending a small shiver down your spine as you passed. Eventually you both reached the inside of the train station where you two found exactly what you were looking for. Within the train station was two men and a woman behind stands who looked like they either sold tickets or pamplets, a lot of seats, the exit for entering/exiting the train, some ATM things, vending machines, and to the very left near the entrance when you two came in was the small cafe area with it's own designated seating. A man was already seated at one table looking at what you supposed was a menu, and two very recognizable teenage boys were sat at another talking....HOP AND VICTOR!? Seriously what was the odds of running into so many people today? You tapped Gloria's shoulder to get her attention but Hop beat you too it because as soon as he looked up he smiled and waved his full arm at her.
"Oh! Gloria!," He shouted at her. Like a dog to food her head snapped to him faster than lightning before the brightest smile ever lit up onto her face as Victor turned around in his seat to look at the both of you.
"HOP! Victor!," She cried out before rushing towards them with you trailing behind with your pokemon in tow. "I haven't seen ya in days!"
"Well we- Ah!" Poor Hop was nearly knocked to the floor when Gloria practically tackled him in a hug (again-) and had to wave his arms to regain balance before leaning forward luckily not falling over. "W-We just got here on the afternoon train! Glory! You're crushin' me again!"
"After noon?", you asked before looking up towards the clock on the wall surprised when you saw it read 12: 24 in the afternoon. "Huh. I didn't think we'd get here that late in the day." You then turned back to Victor. "You guys just got back here? We didn't see you at the gyms we stopped by."
Victor shrugged back at you. "We went straight to Bellonlea after Hop won against Bea," He explained, "Then we traveled a bit so Hop could practice his battling skills before we decided to head to Circhester. Hammerlocke was just a stop before we reached there so we stopped here to restock for the weather they have up there. ...And I wanted to stop by to see the Hammerlocke castle ruins on Route Eight. Legends say that they might even be the remains of the very first castle built in Galar."
"Oh. So how was Bellonlea for you two?"
Hop sighed, having freed himself from his best friend's crushing hug, slumping his shoulders. "First that forest then that mad quiz. I've been lost in every sense of the word...But it looks like I finally caught up to you again."
"Does that mean you didn't get the badge?"
He chuckled. "Took me one heck of a try but I managed somehow to get it from her." He turned back to Gloria. "Speaking of which. Come with me to Route Seven real quick.I could use a bit of competition to motivate me for the next leg of our adventure!"
Gloria blinked. "....Our adventure as in yours and Victor's next stop?"
Hop blinked at her a moment before reaching to scratch the back of his neck and looked away. "W-Well...I uh....I've been having a lot of time to think, and i-it would be nice for you to join us again this time....AH! A-And Y/n too of course!" He was quick to add holding up his hands and a slight pink hue coming over his face. "Of course I enjoy her company too! I-It's not the same without y-you both!" Smooth, Hop. Very smooth.
But it seemed like just like with Bede, Hop's flustered state flew right over her head as her eyes lit up as she quickly agreed. "Are ya kiddin' me!? OF COURSE YES!! I missed travelin' with you guys!" She pointed to the door making Victor duck to avoid getting hit in the head. "C'mon let's go see 'bout that battle!"
"Hang on a second!," Victor interjected with a frown, "What about lunch? Hop, y'know we need to stop by the clothes store and get warmer clothes!"
"..I-...Y-Yeah. But we're staying an extra one or two days so you can see those ruins anyways, so we still have time for a battle and food and shopping..and all that stuff."
......With a sigh Victor sat back down in the seat and picked up his menu again. "Fine. But make it quick. I would like us to get supplies before the end of today. The sooner we're all stocked up the sooner we can see the ruins and head off to Circhester."
Gloria was already tugging him out the door as Hop waved him off. "We'll be right back! Don't worry!"
"That's when I worry the most," he mumbled.
You chuckled before going to sit in one of the chairs across from him, Drizzilie hoping onto your lap of course before settling down and letting you wrap an arm around it's upper torso to hold it. "Well, you two certainly looked like you had an exciting time while we were gone."
"Yeah I guess you could say that. ..Hey. Let's just order something for the two of us while we wait." Your Drizzilie gave a thrum. "Uh...Three of us. The three of us order."
"Are you sure? I don't mind waiting for the other two."
"Nah. I'm hungry, and we'll still be here when they come back."
"Well...Alright then.''
You two went ahead and ordered, not really surprising it was more curries, and it wasn't too long before the three plates were set down in front of you three all different. Your drizzilie immediately went to grab at it's saled curry you had ordered for it, but Victor stopped it before pulling out his own camera.
"Wait a minute. Lemme get a shot of these first," he said holding the camera up to his face.
"You're doing that curry dex thing too?," you asked holding your Drizzilie's protesting hands as it pouted being denied it's food even for a moment.
"Nah. I've just been collecting more pictures of curries and pokemon for Glory since she needs them. Plus I like taking pictures anyways, so it's not a big deal."
"Aw. That's really nice of you."
He was quick to take a few pictures of the curries and you released your pokemon's hands. Drizzilie was quick to grab it's own food and begin scarfing it down much to your amusement as you two yourselves dug in. You were happy that it wasn't another bland tasting granola bar thing or dried fruit snack made for traveling. And it wasn't too long when you were into your food that the two had returned and taken seats next to the two of you as well.
"Hey you two," you greeted, "Welcome back. How was the battle?"
Hop was absolutely beaming and Gloria sighed but not in a sad way before saying, "I lost. Hop really has gotten stronger!"
"Hey, congrats!," you smiled at Hop, "I told you you could do it!"
"Hehe. Thanks," he smiled bashfully before pointing towards the food, "Looks like we're just in time to order ourselves huh? Great! We can catch up with everything that happened then!"
Gloria chuckled. "Well then better get a big curry n' some popcorn! Cuz I gotta lot to tell the both 'o ye!"
"Oh boy. Here we go."
You should've expected the shocked faces that they all gave when Gloria between eating her curry(after taking pictures of them of course-) told them everything. And I do mean EVERYTHING. From helping the lad find an applin for his crush, to the strange MAYBE ghost girl that had you all deliver a letter to Mr. Frank, to the weird guy in Bellonlea who thought he was a pokemon, to how you both met Allister, to her gym battles, and of course everything the two of you went through in Stow-on-Side after they left. The two boys looked more shocked than they would've been if you had suddenly disappeared before their very eyes back the way you came and magically ended up back home. You just simply ate letting Gloria ramble on and on and tried to keep your drizzilie was getting food everywhere. You swore it was like trying to feed a toddler in your lap. Eventually sometime between all of this Hop finally spoke with a scowl pointing at everyone.
"I KNEW it! I knew that bloke was up to no good! And look at what happened!"
"Hop, calm down," you insisted holding up a hand, "To be honest I think he only did it because he was pressured by someone and did what he thought was going to help. I don't know why he thought there would be wishing stars under the mural, but he was right about there being something under there. ...And I really don't want to just talk badly of him since he already paid for what he did." You did feel bad for him but in the back of your mind you knew he'd be fine and get back on the right path now. "...But I think Victor said something about stopping by a clothes store. What for?"
"You'll need some too, Y/n," Victor said, "If you don't wanna freeze your leg off that is. Circhester and it's gyms are located in the mountains where it's always cold and snowy. If we're heading there we'll all need to stock up on food for the long trip too since they're the farthest gyms from here."
"Oh. Well I say we finish up here so we can get started then. I don't know how when the stores around here close."
The rest of the stay in Hammerlocke wasn't very eventful thankfully. After the lot of you had finished eating and paid, you left and you followed them all to the clothing store that Hammerlocke had. You weren't expecting them to actually be selling winter clothes but low and behold they were selling them amongst the regular summer shirts and shorts. All of your pants and shirts was pretty long and warm anyways so you only felt the need to find a plain coat and gloves as the others took their time browsing around and tried on various other winter type clothing. But you did find one thing you liked. A small child's sweater that doubled as a hoodie with the hood attached to it. You looked between it and the Drizzilie before taking it and after wrangling your pokemon lightly, slipped it over his head and popped his arms gently through the sleeves. Drizzilie gave a couple chirps in protest and confusion as he was slipped into the sweater-hoodie...before blinking and pulling out the hem of it to look over it. ..And looked at you with a strange look.
"Hey. If you're not going to stay in your pokeball then you're going to need something to keep you warm too."
You were pretty sure a water pokemon without any feathers or fur to cover him wouldn't fair too well in the cold weather. By the time you all paid for the small pile of winter clothes for the five of you and left the store, the sun was close to setting and with your low food supplies without there being any supply stores in Hammerlocke Victor was clever enough to come up with a better idea. Leading the confused group back to the train station, he walked on over to the vending machines in the corner of the room and considering everything in them was already made to last a long time they'd do until you all found another store with better surprises. Sounded good to you...Or it would've been if Gloria hadn't had the bright idea to use her Rotom pokemon. You couldn't believe it but the rotom pokemon actually transferred itself from the phone into one of the machines and one after another cans of soda, chips, instant noodle things, candy bars, and other snack like foods tumbled down one after the other with the lot of you eagerly grabbing at it. When you pointed out wasn't this technically stealing, Gloria assured you the rotom would be using money coming from her Gym Challenger account to pay for this all. Oh...Well you kinda guessed she'd have one of those to be paid after battles and all. By the end of one vending machine being cleaned out Victor mentioned once it was divided between the four of you it SHOULD be enough to at least last you all the trip up to Circhester. That was good to hear. By the time the four of you were finished with your shopping spree, sun set had finally taken a hold of the town and Hop suggested now would probably be a good time to set up came outside Hammerlocke and rest up to take a visit to the ruins Victor wanted to visit the next day. As much as you'd like to go to Circhester right away it was unanimous that the next day you'd be spending your entire day at the ruins.
That night you slept pretty well and by the time you woke up the next day Victor had already cooked everyone breakfast early. By the smile on his face, you'd say he was pretty excited to spend the day at the ruins. After eating breakfast and packing everything up, the four of you made your way down Route Eight. The castle ruins weren't too far down the road from Hammerlocke, just maybe an hour or two's walk. There was some blocked off areas by rope blocking access to some of the more brittle or dangerous areas of the place. And you did enjoy yourself while you looked around too. There was a couple pokemon you hadn't seen while you were traveling before and both twins seemed to get a kick out of taking pictures of either the ruins or the pokemon hiding within them, as you all walked around along with a few other people who seemed to be looking at them as well. The only ones who really seemed bored just standing around and looking at the ruins was your Drizzilie still wearing the sweater hoodie thing you had gotten him yesterday as he grumbled and walked along after you. The ruins were pretty big and decently had a lot to look at so it was no wonder the four of you spent nearly all morning and half the afternoon there looking at it all before Hop suggested heading back towards Hammerlocke in hopes of catching the night train out of town. Sounded good to everyone..Huh. You wondered if Sonia had studied the ruins here for more clues too? It wasn't too late when the group got back to Hammerlocke, maybe three or four o' clock in the afternoon at the lastest, but definately late enough to have missed the evening train out. Of course Hop and Gloria having to show their badges to the man standing guard at the entrance in order to be let in but it wasn't too much of a hassle for you five to head on in and back to the train station. In the entire time you were back here in Hammerlocke you hadn't seen Raihan again even once. You guessed he must've been traveling again or just not here at the moment. Fine by you. You all had a few hours to kill until the night train showed up sometime around eight o' clock. In the next few hours you all busied yourselves by having dinner courtesy of the guys and Victor giving a very happy glory all the pictures he had taken over the days they were seperated. A LOT of curry (when did they eat so much of that stuff-) and pokemon she was delighted to have and then secure into her books along with the newest pictures she took with help from Hop sorting them out and helping to place them within the labeled pages. Which took up most of the rest of the time it took you four to wait for the night train because it took you all by surprise when the sounds of rumbling tracks and a train horn made you all look up as a shiny subway like train pulled up into the station.
"Ah magikarp!," Gloria shouted before dropping her fork and then scrambling to pick up her thing played on the table. "Hop! Help me stuff these things back inta me bag!!"
Hop blinked but immediately did as his friend asked as he too scrambled to grab any leftover pictures and the two books to throw them back in her bag as Victor quickly dug into his pockets for something. Luckily you didn't have the need to pick anything up or collect anything other than the drizzilie sitting in your lap that you scooped up into your arms when the others scrambled to get up, and Victor tossed what looked like a two dollar tip on the table for whoever had to come collect the dishes. The horn blasting again for any passengers who wished to leave Hammerlocke, which you four sure did heading towards it. Looks like you all would be heading to Circhester and hopefully Gloria's next badge on the way.

"I don't know." Florence sounded far off. Everything out of her felt distant. She's locked in some deep void. A view with no room. Windows blotted with no sign of clarity. All her emotions are bottled up, pressure slowly building. All she can do is shake her head. She has no idea what any of this means. She wants to believe Alice. Hold onto hope of a belief that isn't him. That he's alive. "Lavinia, she has Landon's ring. She says a woman dropped it in the store she was in." The woman peered up, lowering the phone enough to give full attention to the blonde. All she needs is a sign. Something to contradict what they just witnessed. "She's already phoned the department." Unable to bear standing, she sat down, box of chocolate cupcakes still sitting there. Only reminding her of Landon more. "They're going to investigate. Yet that won't help. Not when this person deliberately put OUR names on that package. I wish I could have told him I loved him one last time…" Her head bowed, clutching onto her phone unable to speak anymore after ending the call.
Tumblr media
"Flo?" Lavinia's breath hastened as the call abruptly ended. Dead silence. Deafening. The brunette understood. Shouting about a shoe in a box - the mans shoe that dropped on the floor. That girl. This is no coincidence! She already tried to ask workers here if they saw her before. Apparently she's been around before. Shopping for various items. Everything seemed suspicious. No matter how small. It's what she'll stick to now as she watches two officers speak to employees.
She turned towards the door. People were noticing those patrol cars more. With all the media swarming lately it doesn't surprise Vinia. One bit. Loitering to give info is her goal. She couldn't leave if she tried. Stepping out now is to greet a new car on scene. Unmarked. Shades perched on the bridge of his nose as he exited; for once she's glad to see he showed up so quickly. "Detective Hunter!"
Tumblr media
Shutting his door, Jackson strode up towards the front. Ironic she happened to be here when this occurred. Still no bites on anything else. Even after grilling Wynter's ex he's got nothing. Emeline Entwistle seemed anxious during that entire interview. Something is off about the actress. Probably best to keep his head in the game. Focus on this. He was already late this morning after coming from Phaedra's place. "Ms Cortez," the detective held up his hands. "Slow down. Tell me everything."
"I told the officers but-" Digging into her pocket pulled the gold pinky ring free. She held it on her palm. "This. This IS Landon's ring. A blonde woman had it in her bag. It fell when she bumped into me. Along with a dirty shoe."
Dirty shoe? Odd thing to keep in a bag isn't it? Jackson reached a hand out to pick up the jewelry. Real 24k he's sure. The gold nugget had a bit of dirt etched in its grooves. "Been somewhere it shouldn't have been." Guessing just from that noticeable detail, he raised his head back to Lavinia. "Gonna have to take this for now. You know that right?" When she gave a nod, he returned it, making a direct path inside the store. "Jim," waving down an officer, he handed the item over. "Get this put with Wynter's phone. You got anything on this girl?"
"Owner's offering to show us security cameras. Says it's got a good range of everything in the store. Can identify our girl that way."
Jackson looked back to the brunette. Catching on that she heard, he dropped something vital, "Looks like we might have found our person, Miss Cortez. Can you do me a favor? Get back to Miss Lee's place and stay there for now. We'll keep in touch."
Tumblr media
"Sir! We got a shoe from the dumpster!"
Lavinia's gaze moved along with the detective's towards the recovered evidence. Held by a careful pair of gloved hands; she sucked in a breath. "Florence said a package came with a shoe." Her words lingered heavily and now she truly felt sick to her stomach. @txnnesseehoney // prev

Wednesdays are the highlight of your week now.
Each appointment, Ms. Maxwell sends you to Saturn’s room so you can spend time with him. The two of you have fun together, reading, drawing, playing board games. It’s nice to have something to look forward to.
This Wednesday is no different. Stepping into the room, you’re greeted by a beaming Saturn.
“Welcome back.”
You sit in your favorite chair, a soft smile forming.
“What would you like to do today?”
“I wanted to read, but noticed on the bus ride that I forgot my book…”
“That’s no good.” He holds his chin as he ponders. “My family owns a bookstore, I can take you there.”
“I love that idea.”
Saturn takes you to Ms. Maxwell’s office. She turns to you as the door shuts.
“You’re back early. Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Ms. Maxwell.”
“I want to take her downtown. May I?”
She’s silent for a moment, but her smile lets you know it’s okay. “Sounds fine to me. Don’t get lost.”
Saturn chuckles. “We won’t, don’t worry.”
Stepping outside the building, the cold greets you like a slap to the face.
“Brr.”
“Are you cold?” He holds out a lower arm and lifts his wing. “Here.”
Your cheeks heat up, and not because of the chill. “Thanks.”
An arm wraps around your shoulder, drawing you close—the fuzz warms you instantly. His wing covers your back like a cape.
“Does that feel better?”
You nod, your eyes darting away from his. You’re not used to being so… Close to someone.
His chuckle is soft and playful. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
You appreciate the quiet stroll to the bookstore under Saturn’s wing. Downtown soon comes into view. Water soars into the air and cascades into the waiting fountain. Trees circle the street, their leafless branches covered in lights.
“Have you been downtown at night?”
Shaking your head, you give him a “no.” You don’t leave your house after dark if you can help it.
“The trees are pretty when they’re lit up.” His smile is enough to keep you warm. “Maybe we could see them together some time.”
That sounds nice.
Saturn passes by the buildings, stopping in front of one.
“We’re here.”
Between a nail salon and an electronics store is Black Cat Books. A cat-shaped sign hangs from its side, dangling in the winter breeze. Below it is a large window, displaying several books both new and old. Printed on the window in a serif font is the name, and underneath are the words “Want new books? Check meowt.” The pun makes you chuckle.
“I’ve wanted to visit here.”
A bell rings as you open the door and step inside. The scent of old paper almost overwhelms you, but it isn’t unpleasant. Near the back of the shop is a figure moving around and placing books on the shelves. A lavender moth, much smaller than Saturn, stands behind the counter, his back towards you.
“Greetings, welcome to-” The bug boy turns, his face souring once he sees his customers. “Oh. It’s you.”
“Nova, that’s no way to treat a guest!” He gestures towards you. “Save the sibling rivalry for later.”
Nova squints, his frown dissolving as he registers your presence. “Didn’t see her. Welcome to the store.”
Saturn bends his knees, whispering into your ear. “He forgot his glasses again.”
Nova rolls his eyes, pitch black like his brother’s. “My eyesight isn’t _that _bad.”
“At least your hearing is good!” Saturn gives you a wink and a grin. “Don’t be afraid to look around. While you do that, I’ll head to my room real quick.”
Saturn goes through a door on the back wall, leaving you with his brother. Nova’s expression softens, though a small frown lingers.
“He’s only cocky because of his size.” He sits his elbow on the counter, resting his chin on an open palm. With an annoyed puff he blows his antennae away from his eyes. “Males of our kind are usually smaller… Like me.”
Sounds like a sore spot. Maybe you should change the subject. “I love the store. It’s so cozy.”
A hint of a smile crosses his face. “Thanks.” He turns back to what he was doing before. “Let me know if you need help finding anything.”
You’re drowning in a sea of books, unsure where to start looking. This isn’t even the only room; on the eastern wall is a doorway leading to more shelves. Colorful covers and intriguing titles compete for your attention.
Signs hanging above the shelves, each with a black paw print and cutesy font, point out the home of the genres. Fantasy and sci-fi books lurk in the next room, so you start your search there. By the time Saturn returns, you hold a space adventure starring a centaur.
“Did you find something good?”
“I’ve read stories by this author before. Her romances are always cute.”
You place the book on the counter. Nova rings it up, placing your purchase in a bag.
“Have a good day.”
“It was nice to meet you, Nova.”
Nova almost smiles. Or is less grumpy than earlier, at least. He waves you off as you and Saturn leave.
As the door closes behind you, you huddle into Saturn’s fuzz to fight off the cold. He chuckles, wrapping a lower arm around your shoulder.
“Sorry I left you. I went to feed my cat.”
“It’s okay, I had fun.”
“Nova’s nice under all that grump. He’s shy, like you.”
During your trek back to the office you reach an intersection. Cars zoom by as you wait for the light to turn red.
Step into the street.
Grasping at Saturn’s side, you hide your face in his fuzz.
“Is something wrong?” You can’t see his expression, but there’s worry in his voice.
“It’s… Okay.” The fluff muffles your voice. “I’m okay.”
“Ms. Maxwell told me about your intrusive thoughts.”
Words fail to leave your throat.
“You won’t act on them. You’re safe.”
Wet fuzz brushes against your cheeks. Saturn’s hand rubs your back as you cry into his side, his wings flapping softly against you.
“Take a deep breath.”
You breathe in. As you breathe out, your worry slowly flows out through your nostrils. The tears wind down as you calm yourself.
“That’s it. Do you feel better?”
You look up at him, answering with a quiet nod.
“Good.” His concern melts away, replaced by a warm smile. “Let’s go back to the office.”
Saturn holds you close as you head back, guarding you from the road.

Skipping Town [2]
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter / Masterlist
Hi! Part two time. I will make this short so I don’t jinx anything.
Credit for the gif to whomever made it. You can find the Preview and Part 1 in my masterlist. Feedback is always welcome!
*Daryl Dixon AU*
Okay, love you, bye.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////
You had heard about all of the Daryl sightings that had been happening around town. When you were out with your parents getting a Christmas tree, Mr. Thomas was telling anyone that would listen about the time that Daryl had snuck onto his farm and stolen a set of tires. Though, this could never be proven and you knew for a fact that Daryl had not done that.
You'd also heard about him getting lunch at the diner in the middle of town. Ms. Cathy next door had been telling your mom that he strolled in like he owned the place, plopped down onto a counter stool, and demanded his food. This directly contradicts Sue's account of waiting on him that afternoon, where he'd been quiet, patient and cordial, and he'd tipped generously.
When it came down to it, defending Daryl was a hard and curious position to put yourself in. Once someone associated with any of the Dixon's, they were thrown into the gossip pool, too. The thought of your name being dragged through the mud and passed around by greedy mouths had you keeping your mouth shut, no matter how much you wanted to tell them all that they knew absolutely nothing about Daryl.
Yet, neither did you, anymore.
The stories that passed through your checkout line at the store, whether directed at you or not, had you wondering how you haven't crossed paths with Daryl yet. According to everyone in town, he was everywhere. But this, too, you knew probably wasn't true. According to the "Telephone" game, these folks have all been telling thirty different versions of one instance, but the only recount of events you'd trust at this point were Daryl's.
The store was quiet tonight, Wednesday's always were. There were only two of you on shift and the only folks that came in to do mid-week shopping were a few regulars and teens that always tried to swipe an extra candy bar but had yet to find a way to get away with it. Wednesdays were always quick shifts but they typically dragged on so much that it felt like you'd been there an eternity. Tonight was no different as you had finished the cleaning list long ago, there was nothing to make pretty, and the music that played offered no support in quality to you. It was just plain boring.
So you did what you always did on these nights and cracked open a book. This one wasn't much different than the last three you'd read. The plot had something to do with the main character leaving a small town for the big city, chasing dreams and all that jazz, all the while getting the guy, too. Every plot was the same, the only character changes were the color of their hair or skin, but the fairytale remained the same each time. You latched onto it hard.
You had been literal days away from leaving town before. You had a job lined up, an apartment, and you even considered going to the shelter to adopt a small dog to keep you company on the new journey. And then your dad had a heart attack and you felt guilty leaving at a time like that. There never really was a window of opportunity to leave after that… at least that's what you told yourself. You'd gotten used to the ebbs and flows of this small town life, got comfortable with how things were going.
Got stuck.
"Are ya open?"
The deep grumble came from your right, tearing you away from your book that was resting gently on the scanner scale. You'd been so invested in your book that you hadn't noticed the man walking up to your lane and placing a few items onto the end of the belt. You hurried to shut your book and throw it on the shelf at your feet.
"Sure am! Sorry about that." And you'd press the black button closest to you to move the belt forward. When you grabbed the loaf of potato bread closest to you, you finally glanced up.
And froze.
"Daryl?"
And he pulled his face away from the screen of his phone, his eyes widening. He looked so different, you barely noticed him; the things that tipped you off were the angle of his nose and the scar above his eye. It was irrefutable that it was him. His hair was long and shaggy and he had to brush it away with his fingers when he looked at you, and you suddenly remembered how blue his eyes were. All those times you'd wanted to take an extra lap around town recently to see if you could spot him, all you had to do was wait for him to come to you.
"I heard you were back in town." You started again awkwardly, continuing to scan his items. "Wasn't sure if it was true or if the rumor mill was bored."
He didn't say anything in response, just let out a small hum in response. The silence between the two of you was tangible, until you told him his total and he went to slide his card.
"Thought ya woulda left town long ago." He said as he stuffed his wallet back into his pocket. He looped his fingers through the few plastic bags but then stopped. He was waiting for an answer.
"Still looking for the right time." You replied, your toes now anxiously tapping on a metal pole beneath the bagging carousel. "Are you in town for a while?"
"Nah, tryin' not'ta be." He said finally lifting his bags and dropping his arms to his side. "Jus' here ta clean up Merle's mess an' go."
"Typical." You said immediately. His ears turned red as he offered you a nod goodbye and walked quickly out of the store. Your eyes followed him out the door and through the parking lot, where he climbed into a black truck. It wasn't a vehicle you imagined him having, but the black paint matched his black sweater, and boots, and it seemed cohesive enough to be real. When the truck started to pull away, you also noticed the obvious, albeit quick and blurry, pointy ears of a shepherd sitting in his passenger seat.
And just like that, he was gone again.

Daryl put the truck in park when he finally got back to his motel. He sat there in silence for a bit, trying to figure out what exactly he was feeling. He'd seen plenty of faces he recognized in the last few days; some he didn't mind, others that already had the sheriff's number dialed the moment they recognized him. But he hadn't expected on his quest to buy a few oranges and some cans of soup that he would run into you.
You always had grand plans of leaving when you graduated, college or not, you'd make it somehow. That's what you told him over and over. Daryl was always scared of your dreams. They were well thought out, you were saving money, and you had a list of the top places you'd like to be. In the tangents that he heard you go off on about it, never once did the plans include him. Which was selfish and bold of him to assume they may. But the summer before junior year of high school, the two of you started sneaking off into the open fields a few miles down the road to lay on a big fluffy blanket (that he had definitely stolen from a store three towns over just for this) to star gaze and talk. Daryl hadn't had anyone to really unload on before, which is how he found himself dumping everything he had on you then. From the problems with his dad, to the bad things he himself had done, his fears...anything. You always stayed quiet and let him go, never once making him feel like a burden or like his baggage was too much. Those times in that dark field lying next to each other was when he hoped that your dreams had changed, even just a little. He knew you wouldn't completely divert, staying here was your "worst nightmare". At the time, it hurt him, knowing that you had lumped him into that nightmare- into the one place you wanted to be the least.
After all these years of processing his childhood, and the way people treated his family, he grew to understand that even sneaking out in the middle of the night to disappear into the treeline behind your house where he was waiting for you was a huge risk for you. And you'd taken that risk of judgement and ridicule to offer him solace in the hardest phase of his life. Had someone caught the two of you out in that field, he could only imagine what they would've assumed about you, let alone said.
Your dreams never changed in that time. You never included him in them, never asked him to come with you. He was stupidly in love with you at the time and not being included did break his heart more than it already was. But he still showed up to hide in the trees on Monday and Thursday evenings, like you'd planned, so that he wouldn't be alone with his thoughts or his dad.
"C'mon." He called to Dog when he'd finally gotten out of the truck. Daryl's mind was full of haze, and probably still a bit of shock, at seeing you.
When he put his key card in the door, he wondered what kept you here. He placed his bags on the small utility counter beside the tiny sink and mini fridge, curious if you'd met someone worth staying for. Because seeing you now, he couldn't imagine you being alone.
And when he jumped into the rickety shower, to wash away the grime, grease, and illegality of his work today, he wished all those years ago that he had just sent the text he had typed out the night that he skipped town and started over a long way away.
"Come with me."
Instead, he erased the message and slipped away in the night alone.

Change
Star: Kim Hyunjin (Loona)
Idea: No
Sometimes all it takes is one moment to change everything
A/n: It's a little confusing and messy, sorry!
Tumblr media
You wiped the sweat from your brow, placing your hands on your knees as you stood by the side of the field. Watching the ball move from player to player.
When you caught your breath, your legs went to work as you sprinted nearly half of the field when your teammate called for your name.
They kicked the ball towards your direction, slowing your pace until you managed to catch it, doing a full 180 and running towards the enemy goal.
When you saw their defender get nervous, so you faked them out, looking to the left but kicking the ball with your left foot towards the right edge of the goal.
There was silence for a few seconds, as the ball rapidly darted until it hit the net. Loud cheering only registered in your ears when you felt bodies crash into you.
"You did it, Y/n!"
A bright smile came over your features as you got pulled up by your team. Each of them patting you on the back. Though you could feel something else when you had turned to your bench.
Almost like a lingering feeling on the back of your head, shifting your gaze, your eyes locked on a pair of cat like-eyes, staring at you from across the field. You knew who they were, albeit the distance.
They only belonged to one person, Kim Hyunjin.
You knew Hyunjin since she was often being spoken about by the student body, from her pretty face to her wits. There were also countless times you two had been grouped together.
But you never got to talk since the girl would only focus on the main project, or won’t speak unless necessary.
Though you found it weird that you would always catch her staring, oftentimes you knew she was staring but paid no mind to it. You were nobody compared to her.
Everything you were known for was all condensed into one thing, sports. And with graduation just around the corner, this year would be your last year at the same school with the mysterious cat-eyed girl.
Hyunjin didn’t know what to do.
She would always look at you, but she never could muster up the courage to approach you. For years, she caught sight of you. Since the first day she came, you were the first person that piqued her interest.
Always the student at the back, silent, but she often sees you in the field. Playing your best as you beat every single opponent that would step on that field with you.
It amazed her that you weren’t a heartthrob. That every other girl isn’t already kissing your shoes, gushing about how fit and cool you were.
She would also often notice you slinking away when everything was over. Heading to the showers first and leaving earlier than the rest of the class.
You were quiet, cool, and unique.
Maybe that was the reason she kept on pinning you.
For months, she’s seen you, trying to get the courage she needed to approach you and talk. But every time she would, everything she built up would disappear, turning into this cold person who wouldn’t talk.
At first, she thought that it was merely because she admired you. But throughout the years, she’d had enough time to figure out her feelings.
After three long years, she’d figured it out. A few months ago, she admitted to herself that she indeed liked you.
But time was running out and she was afraid that she wouldn’t get another opportunity like this. Her idol career is almost close to its peak.
She was about to debut soon, and though she didn’t want to deal with the hurt both of you would feel, she was determined enough to make it work.
All she needed was a little confidence.
--
A few weeks later and you were already hugging your friends, taking pictures with your professors as you held your diploma with pride.
You were almost on your way out when you felt someone tap your shoulder. Turning around, you were shocked to see the person your curiosity had been piqued at.
"Hey," she greeted you, her voice hush as her round eyes locked on with yours.
"Hyunjin-ssi, congratulations," you replied, smiling at her while she kept staring at you, her face blank, and you were confused about why she had approached you.
"Congratulations too, Y/n," you were surprised to know that she knew your name, but you had been getting a little popular since your last game, though you weren’t expecting her to talk to you since the last time you two spoke was during your last project three months ago.
You two stood there for a while, not saying a word, the atmosphere slowly getting awkward before you spoke,
"Well, I should be heading out now, Hyunjin-ssi, congratulations, see you, good luck in the future,"
You rubbed your neck awkwardly, waiting to see if she would say anything, but nothing came out of her mouth, only keeping her eyes on you before you gave her one last smile before you turned to leave.
--
"Hey, are you ready?" Hyunjin abruptly closed the drawer, turning to face her best friend, and nodded, "Let’s go," Heejin didn’t notice the look on her friend’s face, only smiling as they left the dorms, making sure they told Haseul before leaving.
Hyunjin and Heejin were heading down to buy some bread. Having lost their stock the day before, they made sure to plan out an afternoon so they could take their time to pick out what they wanted.
When they went into the store, a smile spread on Hyunjin’s face when she caught a glimpse of the bread section. Already walking there with a small skip to her steps, which surely the bunny giggled at.
About an hour into their shopping, Hyunjin noticed something in the corner of her eye, followed by hearing a familiar voice that felt nostalgic. She turned her head, seeing someone wearing a coat, picking out cereal boxes as they muttered to themselves.
Unconsciously, the cat-eyed girl walked toward the person, leaving Heejin to pick out the food before she reached over and tapped their shoulder.
"Should I buy the white ones or the chocolate ones," you muttered to yourself, holding each box in your hand before feeling a hand on your shoulder.
Turning your body, you raised your eyebrows when a girl stood in front of you, wearing a mask, as her round eyes looked at you, though not saying a word.
"Sorry, do I know you?" you asked after a minute of silence, the stranger reached up to remove their mask, a small smile on your face when you recognized the girl.
"Hyunjin-ssi, it’s been a while, how are you?" You asked her, suddenly memories floating in your head during your high school days with the girl.
"I’m good. How about you?"
A smile spread onto your face when you heard her talk, before a teasing smile lingered on your lips,
"Normal, I’ve been doing fine, but of course, not as fine as your life now, Ms. Idol," you teased, but her round eyes showed no reaction, "Things surely don’t change, you’re still as quiet as I remembered,"
For a minute, the two of you just stood there, before hearing Hyunjin’s name being called out, from the end of the aisle.
You saw familiarity in the brown hair, the puppy eyes that you would often see in the posters. As quickly as she could, Hyunjin shuffled through her bag.
Taking an old receipt and a pen before she wrote her number, placing it in your hands before she turned,
"Call me sometime, Y/n-ssi, let’s hang out sometime,"
You were shocked by her words, almost experiencing vertigo at the speed of the changes. But still, without fail, you eventually saved her number, texting her a quick ‘Hi’ before you continued your groceries. Hyunjin, in your mind, "I would never understand that girl."
--
"You’re leaving again, Hyunjin?" Haseul saw her member heading to the door, wearing her mask as she prepared to leave.
A month had already passed since she met you, and ever since the following week, you two met, Hyunjin had asked you to hang out, excusing it as a way to catch up.
Surely, her members would notice the days where she would leave, opting not to go with Heejin to the gym, or sleep during their off days.
Eventually, she explained who she was meeting, which led to her members already knowing who they were, just to make sure that Hyunjin was safe. Which in itself was a different story on its own.
"She’s hanging out with Y/n, unnie what’d you expect," Heejin teased, coming out of the hallway, most of the members already believed that you two were dating, and that the cat-eyed girl didn’t say it.
But Hyunjin didn’t argue since it all worked out. You two have been having a fun time. With you successfully making Hyunjin come out of her shell as she was getting comfortable around you, talking and bickering like you have been friends for years.
"Hey dummy," you raised your head with a smile, recognizing the voice as you waved, drinking your coffee, while Hyunjin sat on the opposite side.
Today, you two decided that a simple hangout at the cafe was nice, not wanting to do much because you knew Hyunjin was a bit tired from promoting. You got her an americano, knowing how much she loved it, even if the weather was against it.
The conversation started almost naturally, both of you not running out of words as both of you seemingly already told your life stories. But a few hours later, you found silence, your head wandering as you contemplated if you wanted to tell her or not.
Though eventually, you did.
"Hey," you called out, taking her attention away from the window, as she locked her gaze into yours,
"I’m gonna tell you something, but don’t laugh at me okay? It’s been a long time," you said, watching how she nodded, though the flash in her eye said otherwise.
Taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes, "I used to have--uh," you paused, sighing as you contemplated, deciding if this was worth the embarrassment, sighing you did it anyway,
"I used to crush on you when we were in high school,"
There was silence, waiting before you opened your eyes. Seeing her face blank, you were afraid that you had ruined the moment, but suddenly she burst into laughter. Pulling a whine out of you as you reached out to hit her,
"Yah, you said you wouldn’t laugh!" You whined, but she merely showed you a smile, wiping the tears in her eyes.
"I’m sorry, it’s just too good. You’re a funny one, L/n,"
Hyunjin passed it off as a joke, but deep down, she hoped that it was true, but all of a sudden, you clicked your tongue, and the words that left your mouth managed to make her stop,
"I’m not lying, Hyunjin, I did like you," the seriousness in your voice made Hyunjin pause, the intensity of your gaze as you spoke, she knew then that you weren’t joking.
Hyunjin let her mind wander, so all that time you liked her? Her? The girl that wouldn’t even speak a proper sentence because they were pinning too hard to notice?
A few minutes of silence reigned for a while before Hyunjin blinked away from her thoughts, looking at you before she spoke, "Yeah, I would’ve liked myself too," she said, pulling a laugh out of you as the conversation picked up again.
After a few more hours, it was time for you to leave. Having an emergency, you bid goodbye to the girl, waving as she smiled and watched you leave. A glint in her eyes while watching your form until it disappeared from her sight.
She sat there for a while, contemplating, her mind turning as she left the cafe.
Maybe she still had a chance.
--
The next day, Hyunjin found herself, back in the same cafe, smiling as she talked with you. She had called you the night before, saying that she wanted to tell you something.
Of course, being the person you were, you agreed, curious about what she wanted to say since she preferred to say it face to face than on the call.
"So what did you want to say?" You asked her, eating your cake as she suddenly grew quiet, but as she mustered her courage to say what she wanted, you saw a person enter, your eyes turning into crescents as they saw you.
"I wanted to say that--"
Hyunjin couldn’t continue, when you placed the cake down and stopped her,
"Wait, first I wanted you to meet someone," her brows furrowed, when you stood up, waving the person over, and Hyunjin couldn’t believe the next words that left your mouth.
"This is my girlfriend. I think you already know her too,"
Hyunjin’s jaw dropped, seeing her old friend remove her mask as she waved at her, shaking her head as she was afraid this was all a dream.
"Jooeun?" The girl smiled at her, both of them taking a seat, your hands clasped as both of you wore a sweet smile, "Hello, Hyunjin, it’s been a long time, I’m glad you made it!"
Hyunjin was dumbfounded, her hopes suddenly getting crushed when she had remembered the words you had said just mere seconds ago,
"J-Jooeun, it’s nice to see you," she replied, almost forcefully as she watched the scene, seeing her heartbreak when you leaned in to kiss her on the lips.
"You two are gross, but I’m h-happy for you," it was forced, but you two managed to believe it, smiling like a happy couple while Hyunjin became quiet on the side.
It was a grueling hour, each sweet gesture, further breaking her heart, as she watched you two be so happy.
At some point, Hyunjin couldn’t take it so, she faked picking up her phone, apologizing to you and Jooeun as she left. When she got back to the dorms, she immediately went to her room. Closing the doors before leaving against the door.
She chuckled to herself, her eyes stinging a little before she closed them entirely, crossing her arms, as she sighed.
She thought she was early, since yesterday, she had this hope, an inkling feeling that this was going to work out. That faith managed to bring you two together.
She was planning to tell you today, that she liked you, that she still likes you, but the events that took place brought her down to a point where she hated herself.
Had she been confident enough, if she were just early, if she wasn’t so scared, then she wouldn’t have been feeling this right now. If she weren’t so terrified, then it would’ve been her sitting beside you.
Opening her eyes, Hyunjin walked to her desk, sitting on the chair as she opened her drawer. Reaching to the bottom of the stacked papers and books before pulling out a small card, a photo.
A sad smile as she closed her eyes, a lone tear falling on her cheeks as she remembered.
"See you, Hyunjin-ssi,"
When she saw you turn, something came over Hyunjin as she chased after you, once again tapping your shoulder as you turned to face her,
"Wait,"
You looked at her, eyebrows raised, "I-uh wanted to take a picture with you," Hyunjin had said, stuttering, she could see the confusion in your eyes, yet you nodded anyway.
Standing beside her as she pulled out her camera, taking a picture, Hyunjin thanked you. Pulling you into a small hug as she smiled.
"See you in the future, L/n Y/n."

Can you keep a secret?
Chapter 1: Permanent Holders
(That au I was talking about a while ago)
Ladybug huffed a breath from her nose before throwing her yo-yo at the little box in the akuma's hand. It made contact with her wrist, and the box went flying right into awaiting claws of her partner. He shot her a wink and prepared his other hand.
"Cata-" He was cut off as a flying trash can slammed into him. The box clattered to the ground just a few feet away from the akuma.
In the split second when both Chat Noir and the akuma lunged for the box, Ladybug slung her yo-yo at the akuma, holding them tight with their arms at their sides.
"Carapace! I told you to cover Chat Noir!" She glanced over her shoulder as she shouted, catching the sheepish glance of the turtle hero, who had his shield in front of Rena Rouge, who was keeping the akuma's puzzle creature at bay.
"Sorry, dudette." He leapt in front of Chat Noir just as the akuma broke through her hold in a burst of strength. "Shelter!" The green dome surrounded the akuma and Ladybug felt some tension leave her shoulders.
"Cataclysm!" The box shattered at Chat Noir's hands, revealing the butterfly and feather hiding within. They began their escape, dancing around one another and rising to the clouds.
"Oh, no you don't." Ladybug allowed herself a fond smile at the two dangerous forms. This part was always the easiest; catch the akuma and fix everything. It was almost childlike, chasing a butterfly all over town. A corrupted butterfly controlled by a mad man. She sighed again and opened her yo-yo. "Time to de-evilize." She caught the two in one swoop, and released them both with a tap to the central spot on her weapon.
With that out of the way, she moved to the door. It had a large red and black pole keeping the doors from opening. With an experimental spin, she tossed the charm into the air with a "miraculous ladybug!"
"Nice work team!" Chat Noir smiled and held out his fist, now unaffected by the trash can that could have broken his hip.
"Yeah!" Carapace and Rena Rouge joined with gusto; Ladybug did too after a second. Her partner was safe, she was safe, Paris was safe.
As they pulled away, Chat grabbed Carapace's fist. "Carapace. You did great, but you need to listen to Ladybug the first time."
"I don't see the problem." Rena straightened, eyes flaming with that same light she used when she protected Marinette from Chloe. "He did fine; we won!"
"That's the problem. We won this time. If you don't follow the plan the first time, there might not be a next time." She glanced at Chat Noir. This was her last chance before everything changed.
She and Chat Noir had talked about their two apprentices for some time over patrol. She released her frustration and anxieties over how little the two listened to her and treated akuma battles like a game instead, and Chat Noir suggested making them permanent holders.
"Think about it. If they have the miraculous with them all the time, it'll stop being so novel, and they'll start taking it seriously. Just like you and me!" He gave her a mischievous glance. "Or have you forgotten how lax I used to be?
She giggled at the thought. "How could I ever forget, Mr. Why not flirt as I'm bleeding out?"
He winced, and placed a hand to his chest. "You wound me, my lady! I am a changed man, falling in love has made me better!"
"Right. Remember to thank your girlfriend for me."
Today was the first day since their conversation that they had managed to bring out both Carapace and Rena Rouge for battle. They had agreed that making them permanent holders would be beneficial; especially since Ladybug wouldn't need to ditch battles to grab an extra miraculous.
"But regardless, after you detransform, you don't need to give me you miraculous anymore. I'm letting you keep it."
"Really?" Rena bounced on her toes and clutched her necklace. "I get to be like you two? Does this mean I'll meet the guardian? Or know your identities? Or-"
"Babe, calm down." Carapace placed a hand on her shoulder with his trademark easy smile, but his eyes mirrored his girlfriend's excitement.
"This is on a trial period only." Ladybug emphasized. "Every night, your kwamis will visit either me, Chat Noir, or the guardian and report on your behavior outside the mask, your treatment of them, and your usage of the miraculous. You will not follow them, and if we decide after your probationary period that you aren't fit to be a permanent holder, you will return the miraculous. No questions asked. Likewise, if we decide to keep you as a permanent holder, you'll need to keep up the good behavior. Your kwamis can fill us in at any time."
Rena and Carapace nodded mutely.
Her miraculous beeped. "One more thing before I go; no using your miraculous or kwamis for personal gain. No exceptions."
With that, she nodded at Chat Noir and left through the window, swinging from building to building with a tense feeling in her gut. She landed on her bed just as she detransformed, Tikki spiralling out of the earrings and into her hands.
"Tikki, do you think I did the right thing? Making Nino and Alya permanent heroes?" Marinette opened her bag, startling for a moment at the feather and butterfly that flew out; in her haste to tell Nino and Alya about their new designation, she had forgotten to release the akuma and amok. She batted them away and grabbed Tikki's recharge cookie with her other hand.
"I think you made a good decision, Marinette." Tikki mumbled behind enormous bites. "It's rare for a ladybug and cat to be out without a team behind them. This will be a big help for all of you; in my experience, Chat Noir is right about being a permanent holder making a person mature."
"Yeah, I feel a lot more confident as Ladybug now; more like Ladybug and less like a little kid in a costume."
"So let some of that confidence go into your Marinette life too!" Cookie gone, energy returned, Tikki flew around Marinette's head in a show of support. "Take a chance!"
"On what?"
"Anything! We have the whole weekend to decide! You could even start up the online store you were thinking about!" She hovered over the computer for a moment.
Marinette glanced at it. She had a draft of the website prepared; all of the designs and commission information she wanted to be on there were ready to go. She just needed the guts to finish and submit it.
"Okay."
"Okay!" Tikki squealed and hit the enter key.
MDC designs was now in business.
"Do you think I should put my name on it after all, Tikki? So that people know who they're ordering from?"
"Probably. Also, since you've designed for famous people before, your name already has a reputation."
"Yeah..." She moved her mouse to the 'edit' button.
"Marinette!" Her father shouted from the living room. "Ms. Chamack is here with Manon!"
Right, she'd promised Nadia that she'd look after Manon while she interviewed potential interns this weekend.
"Be right down!" Tikki flew into her bag and Marinette grabbed the little box of extra dolls she'd made for Manon. Changing her website and worrying about Nino and Alya could wait.

Patent troll's IP more powerful than Apple's
Tumblr media
I was 12 years into my Locus Magazine column when I published the piece I'm most proud of, "IP," from September 2020. It came after an epiphany, one that has profoundly shaped the way I talk and think about the issues I campaign on.
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
That revelation was about the meaning of the term "IP," which had been the center of this tedious linguistic cold war for decades. People who advocate for free and open technology and culture hate the term "IP" because of its ideological loading and imprecision.
Ideology first: Before "IP" came into wide parlance - when lobbyists for multinational corporations convinced the UN to turn their World Intellectual Property Organization into a specialized agency, we used other terms like "author's monopolies" and "regulatory monopolies."
"Monopoly" is a pejorative. "Property" is sacred to our society. When a corporation seeks help defending its monopoly, it is a grubby corrupter. When it asks for help defending its property, it is enlisting the public to defend the state religion.
Free culture people know allowing "monopolies" to become "property" means losing the battle before it is even joined, but it is frankly unavoidable. How do you rephrase "IP lawyer" without conceding the property point? "Trademark-copyright-patent-and-related-rights lawyer?"
Thus the other half of the objection to "IP": its imprecision. Copyright is not anything like patent. Patent is not anything like trademark. Trade secrets are an entirely different thing again. Don't let's get started on sui generis and neighboring rights.
And this is where my revelation came: as it is used in business circles, "IP" has a specific, precise meaning. "IP" means, "Any law, policy or regulation that allows me to control the conduct of my competitors, critics and customers."
Copyright, patent and trademark all have limitations and exceptions designed to prevent this kind of control, but if you arrange them in overlapping layers around a product, each one covers the exceptions in the others.
Creators don't like having their copyrights called "author's monopolies." Monopolists get to set prices. All the copyright in the world doesn't let an author charge publishers more for their work. The creators have a point.
But when author's monopolies are acquired by corporate monopolists, something magical and terrible happens.
Remember: market-power monopolies are still (theoretically) illegal and when companies do things to maintain or expand their monopolies, they risk legal jeopardy.
But: The corporate monopolist who uses IP to expand their monopoly has no such risk. Monopolistic conduct in defense of IP enjoys wide antitrust forbearance. What's the point of issuing patents or allowing corporations to buy copyrights if you don't let them enforce them?
The IP/market-power monopoly represents a futuristic corporate alloy, a new metal never seen, impervious to democratic control.
Software is "IP" and so any device with software in it is like beskar, a rare metal that can be turned into the ultimate corporate armor.
Tumblr media
No company exemplifies this better than Apple, a company that used limitations on IP to secure its market power, then annihilated those limits so that no one could take away its market power.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/06/adversarial-interoperability-reviving-elegant-weapon-more-civilized-age-slay
In the early 2000s, Apple was in trouble. The convicted monopolist Microsoft ruled the business world, and if you were the sole Mac user in your office, you were screwed.
When a Windows user sent you a Word file, you could (usually) open it in the Mac version of Word, but then if you saved that file again, it often became forever cursed, unopenable by any version of Microsoft Office ever created or ever to be created.
This became a huge liability. Designers started keeping a Windows box next to their dual processor Power Macs, just to open Office docs. Or worse (for Apple), they switched to a PC and bought Windows versions of Adobe and Quark Xpress.
Steve Jobs didn't solve this problem by begging Bill Gates to task more engineers to Office for Mac. Instead, Jobs got Apple techs to reverse-engineer all of the MS Office file formats and release a rival office suite, Iwork, which could read and write MS Office files.
That was an Apple power move, one that turned MS's walled garden into an all-you-can-eat buffet of potential new Mac users. Apple rolled out the Switch ads, whose message was, "Every MS Office file used to be a reason *not* to use a Mac. Now it's a reason to switch *to* a Mac."
More-or-less simultaneously, though, Apple was inventing the hybrid market/IP monopoly tool that would make it the most valuable company in the world, in its design for the Ipod and the accompanying Itunes store.
It had a relatively new legal instrument to use for this purpose: 1998's Digital Millennium Copyright Act; specifically, Section 1201 of the DMCA, the "anti-circumvention" clause, which bans breaking DRM.
Under DMCA 1201, if a product has a copyrighted work (like an operating system) and it has an "access control" (like a password or a bootloader key), then bypassing the access control is against the law, even if no copyright infringement takes place.
That last part - "even if no copyright infringement takes place" - is the crux of DMCA 1201. The law was intended to support the practices of games console makers and DVD player manufacturers, who wanted to stop competitors from making otherwise legal devices.
With DVD players, that was about "region coding," the part of the DVD file format that specified which countries a DVD could be played back in. If you bought a DVD in London, you couldn't play it in Sydney or New York.
Now, it's not a copyright violation to buy a DVD and play it wherever you happen to be. As a matter of fact, buying a DVD and playing it is the *opposite* of a copyright infringement.
But it *was* a serious challenge to the entertainment cartel's business-model, which involved charging different prices and having different release dates for the same movie depending on where you were.
The same goes for games consoles: companies like Sega and Nintendo made a lot of money charging creators for the right to sell games that ran on the hardware they sold.
If I own a Sega Dreamcast, and you make a game for it, and I buy it and run it on my Sega, that's not a copyright infringement, even if Sega doesn't like it. But if you have to bypass an "access control" to get the game to play without Sega's blessing, it violates DMCA 1201.
What's more, DMCA 1201 has major penalties for "trafficking in circumvention devices" and information that could be used to build such a device, such as reports of exploitable flaws in the programming of a DRM system: $500k in fines and a 5 year sentence for a first offense.
Deregionalizing a DVD player or jailbreaking a Dreamcast didn't violate anyone's copyrights, but it still violated copyright law (!). It was pure IP, the right to control the conduct of critics (security researchers), customers and competitors.
In the words of Jay Freeman, it's "Felony contempt of business-model."
And that's where the Ipod came in. Steve Jobs's plan was to augment the one-time revenue from an Ipod with a recurrent revenue stream from the Itunes store.
He exploited the music industry's superstitious dread of piracy and naive belief in the efficacy of DRM to convince the record companies to only sell music with his DRM wrapper on it - a wrapper they themselves could not authorize listeners to remove.
Ever $0.99 Itunes purchase added $0.99 to the switching cost of giving up your Ipod for a rival device, or leaving Itunes and buying DRM music from a rival store. It was control over competitors and customers. It was IP.
If you had any doubt that the purpose of Ipod/Itunes DRM was to fight competitors, not piracy, then just cast your mind back to 2004, when Real Media "hacked" the Ipod so that it would play music locked with Real's DRM as well as Apple's.

Apple used DMCA 1201 to shut Real down, not to stop copyright infringement, but to prevent Apple customers from buying music from record labels and playing them on their Ipods without paying Apple a commission and locking themselves to Apple's ecosystem, $0.99 at a time.
Pure IP. Now, imagine if Microsoft had been able to avail itself of DMCA 1201 when Iwork was developed - if, for example, its "information rights management" encryption had caught on, creating "access controls" for all Office docs.
There's a very strong chance that would have killed Apple off before it could complete its recovery. Jobs knew the power of interoperating without consent, and he knew the power of invoking the law to block interoperability. He practically invented modern IP.
Apple has since turned IP into a trillion-dollar valuation, largely off its mobile platform, the descendant of the Ipod. This mobile platform uses DRM - and thus DMCA 1201 - to ensure that you can only use apps that come from its app store.
Apple gets a cut of penny you spend buying an app, and every penny you spend within that app: 30% (now 15% for a minority of creators after bad publicity).
IP lets one of the least taxed corporations on Earth extract a 30% tax from everyone else.
https://locusmag.com/2021/03/cory-doctorow-free-markets/
Remember, it's not copyright infringement for me to write an app and you to buy it from me and play it on your Iphone without paying the 30% Apple tax.
That's the exact opposite of copyright infringement: buying a copyrighted work and enjoying it on a device you own.
But it's still an IP violation. It bypasses Apple's ability to control competitors and customers. It's felony contempt of business-model.
It shows that under IP, copyright can't be said to exist as an incentive to creativity - rather, it's a tool for maintaining monopolies.
Which brings me to today's news that Apple was successfully sued by a patent troll over its DRM. A company called Personalized Media Communications whose sole product is patent lawsuits trounced Apple in the notorious East Texas patent-troll court.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-19/apple-told-to-pay-308-5-million-for-infringing-drm-patent
After software patents became widespread - thanks to the efforts of Apple and co - there was a bonanza of "inventors" filing garbage patents with the USPTO whose format was "Here's an incredibly obvious thing...*with a computer*." The Patent Office rubberstamped them by the million.
These patents became IP, a way to extract rent without having to make a product. "Investors" teamed up with "inventors" to buy these and impose a tax on businesses - patent licensing fees that drain money from people who make things and give it to people who buy things.
They found a court - the East Texas court in Marshall, TX - that was hospitable to patent trolls. They rented dusty PO boxes in Marshall and declared them to be their "headquarters" so that they could bring suits there.
Locals thrived - they got jobs as "administrators" (mail forwarders) for the thousands of "businesses" whose "head office" was in Marshall (when you don't make a product, your head office can be a PO box).
Productive companies facing hundreds of millions - billions! - in patent troll liability sought to curry favor with locals (who were also the jury pool) by "donating" things to Marshall, like the skating rink Samsung bought for the town.
https://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/why-south-korea-s-samsung-built-the-only-outdoor-skating-rink-in-texas
Patent, like copyright, is supposed to serve a public purpose. There are only two clauses in the US Constitution that come with explanations (the rest being "truths held to be self-evident"): the Second Amendment and the "Progress Clause" that creates patents and copyrights.
Famously, the Second Amendment says you can bear arms as part of a "well-regulated militia."
And the Progress Clause? It extends to Congress the power to create patents and copyrights "to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts."
I'm with Apple in its ire over this judgment. Sending $308.5m to a "closely held" patent troll has nothing to do with the "Progress of Science and useful Arts."
But it has *everything* to do with IP.
If copyright law can let Apple criminalize - literally criminalize - you selling me If copyright law can let Apple criminalize - literally criminalize - you selling me your copyrighted work, then there's no reason to hate on patent trolls.
They're just doing what trolls do: blocking the bridge between someone engaged in useful work and the customers for that work, and extracting a toll. It's not even 30%.
There is especial and delicious irony in the fact that the patent in question is a DRM patent: a patent for the very same process that Apple uses to lock down its devices and prevent creators from selling to customers without paying the 30% Apple Tax.
But even without that, it's as good an example of what an IP marketplace looks like: one in which making things becomes a liability. After all, the more you make, the more chances there are for an IP owner to demand tax from you to take it to market.
The only truly perfect IP is the naked IP of a patent troll, the bare right to sue, a weapon made from pure abstract legal energy, untethered from any object, product or service that might be vulnerable to another IP owner's weapons.
A coda: you may recall that Apple doesn't use DRM on its music anymore: you can play Itunes music on any device. That wasn't a decision Apple took voluntarily: it was forced into it by a competitor: Amazon, an unlikely champion of user rights.
In 2007, the record labels had figured out that Apple had lured them into a trap, selling millions of dollars worth of music that locked both listeners and labels into the Itunes ecosystem.
In a desperate bid for freedom, they agreed to help Amazon launch its MP3 store - all the same music, at the same prices...without DRM. Playable on an Ipod, but also on any other device.
Prior to the Amazon MP3 store, the market was all DRM: you could either buy Apple's DRM music and play it on your Ipod, or you could buy other DRM music and play it on a less successful device.
The Amazon MP3 store (whose motto was "DRM: Don't Restrict Me") changed that to "Buy Apple DRM music and play it on your Ipod, or buy Amazon music and play it anywhere." That was the end of Apple music DRM.
So why hasn't anyone done this for the apps that Apple extracts the 30% tax on? IP. If you made a phone that could play Ios apps, Apple would sue you:
https://gizmodo.com/judge-tosses-apple-lawsuit-against-iphone-emulator-in-b-1845967318
And if you made a device that let you load non-App Store apps on an Iphone, Apple would also sue you.
Apple understands IP. It learned the lesson of the Amazon MP3 store, and it is committed to building a world where every creator pays a tax to reach every Apple customer.

Masks and Music
(Part 1)
Part 2
I didn't think that my last post would've gotten ANY notes at all, so imagine my surprise when I find out that people actually liked it. After that suprise I thought why not and make another one so here we go! This is a Miraculous/Batfam crossover.
Imagine that Damian gets sent to Paris because the fam doesn't want him to become an emotionally constipated sad boi like Bruce and think that a change in scenery would help.
They don't know about the whole Hawkmoth situation because SOMEONE from the justice league decided that the while thing was a prank DESPITE that it was an ENTIRE CITY calling instead of a single person.
Like, aren't you guys supposed to be the world's greatest heros or something?
Who hired you?
Damian being the grumpy lil kid that he is holds a grudge and decides to not accept any calls or video chats from his family or tell them about Hawkmoth because that's what you get when you send someone across the world against their will.
(and because of plot convenience shhh)
Anyways, Damian goes to school as instantly adds Lila onto his mental list of people he needs to get rid of.
I mean, seriously, he's only been is the room for what, 15 seconds and he's already getting a migraine?
Great. Juusssttt great.
He sits in the back of the class with what seems to be the only person with brain cells in this room.
The dark haired girl just looks over and sees the disgust at Lila written all over his face and gives him a silent empathetic nod.
'This is unfortunately normal here.' she tries to convey through the small action.
He just nods back to show his understanding before turning around to observe the others.
In a few minutes Ms. Bustier walks in the room and asks him to introduce himself to the class.
It looks like the teacher never told the class that they were getting a new student because they all have to do double takes when they realize that there's a new face in the room.
He gives them the bare basics, telling them that his name is Damian Grayson, he's from America, and that he doesn't want any of them to talk to him before sitting down.
Clearly the teacher wanted him to say more or scold him for being so rude but a glare shut her up.
Later during a break period Lila tries to flirt with him and brags all about how she's met so many different celebrities and her achievements.
He tells her off and tries to move away but her nails are digging into his arms as she tries to convince him that he should stay away from Marinette.
Before he can maim her, the dark haired girl comes out from behind him and starts spraying Lila down like an unruly cat with some sort of strong smelling liquid from a spray bottle.
Lila screeches and stomps away.
When he turns to his hero the girl explains.
"It's a mixture of shredded lemon, expired maple syrup, vinegar, and pomegranate juice. I call it People Repellant but Thot Begone works too. Oh, and I'm Marinette by the way."
He eyes her hand before shaking it.
"Damian, though I assume you already know that. Can I get some of that by the way? I know a couple insufferable annoyances that would benefit from a spray down.
Marinette just blinks for a second before she bursts out laughing and that was the start of a great friendship.
Together they:
Make fun of Lila in the back of class.
Help eachother with homework (they only cheat off eachother when they REALLY need help)
Prank Lila in odd ways (Hey, just because she found hundreds of furbies hidden around her house that turn on one by one in the middle of the night effectively scaring the crap out of her when she's trying to sleep doesn't mean that it's their fault. She had it coming.)
Break a couple laws (shhhhhhh. Those toy stores don't need those furbies anyways).
Dare eachother over stupid things (they still insist that the cereal incident was caused by the other).
And overall become closer as friends.
They bring out the overdramatic chaotic gremlin child in eachother.
One time when Damian goes over to Marinette's place to work on a project he finds her singing a Disney song to herself on her balcony.
This isn't the first time they've caught eachother singing.
One time Marinette caught Damian in the art room at school humming one of the many annoyingly cheesy and catchy songs that Dick likes to listen to.
Despite him explaining the embarrassing situation to her she still teased him for weeks after.
He'll never get to live it down.
Damian shakes his head to get rid of the flashback when a devious smirk spreads across his face as a revenge plan comes to mind.
After carefully placing his stuff on the floor he sneakily makes his way across the space until he's right behind her.
That's when he joins in.
Screaming at the top of his lungs at first, effectively giving her a mini heart attack before eventually quieting down to a normal singing volume.
She glares at him, annoyed by his loud and obnoxious entrance before she starts singing again.
They eventually end up full Disney movie dramatically performing around her balcony with dance moves and over dramatic acting.
Is it bad that actual birds and other animals are appearing and joining in?
Damian totally kept one of the pigeons.
He named it Dolores.
(He later trained Dolores to attack Rossi on sight.)
When they're finished they end up on the floor out of breath.
They stay like that for a few minutes before Damian sits up.
"That. That was fun. I don't think I've actually ever sang before."
Marinette jolts up in suprise and turns to face him.
"Really? I never would've guessed. You have a really nice singing voice."
He would deny till his dying breath that he blushed when she said that but he covers it up with a smirk.
"Well I guess that's just because yours is so terrible in comparison."
He squawks when she jabs a finger in his side.
"Pshh. As if. Besides, my singing skills can't be worse then your gaming skills." She challenges with a cheeky smile.
"ExCuSe mE?!"
And that's how they spend the rest of the day playing video games, leaving the unfinished project to be completed on a later day.
Good thing it isn't due until 2 weeks time.
After a couple of hours playing video games, creating many possible Lila murder plans, eating pastries, and joking around, it's time for him to leave.
As Damian left for his place he got a feeling that something big was gonna happen.
Marinette also got the feeling but they both ignored it.
Little did they know, someone just happened to walk by and starstruck by the amazing singing they recorded the performance before posting it on the internet.
Imagine the duo's suprise when they wake up the next day to find themselves trending on the internet.
Luckily the video quality was pretty trash so their faces weren't identifiable but the audio was loud and clear.
The world was talking about the cute couple singing to their hearts desire on a balcony. If that's not cliche and adorable then the world doesn't know what is.
The assumption about their relationship status left them looking like tomatos but that didn't stop them from wonder why they didn't notice a creep recording them.
Damn Disney songs and their unnatural ability to distract people.
Of course Lila took advantage of the rising popularity of the video and talked about how she taught the two people in the video how to sing and gave them tips.
The two just walked past the idiot squad and sat down in their seats, making a mental note to come up with a prank later, when the akuma alarms came on.
They fall into their normal routine of Marinette running out to find a place to transform as Damian covers for her.
Oops did I forget to mention that Damian found out her identity because she crashed through his window in the middle of the night still transformed and asked him what's the answer to question 24 in their science homework because she just defeated an akuma by herself and was running on 20 minutes of sleep?
My bad.
Anyways it turns out today was the day Marinette had officially had enough of Chat's bullcrap.
It was gonna be a normal akuma situation.
Ladybug trying to fight the poor butterfly victim while chat noir either doesn't show up, tries to do everything on his own to impress her and ruins the whole plan, or just watches and complains about how she needs to get over her denial and date him BUT
This time he decided to actively try to push her in the akuma's way therefore putting her in SO MUCH MORE DANGER than she was already in.
Now she had to dodge out of the akuma's way AND CHAT'S!
WhAt ThE fUdGe?!?!
You think possibly killing Ladybug and trying to force her to beg for you to save her is gonna make her like you?!?
Just how hard did you hit your head when Gabriel dropped you on the floor when you were 2?
After the akuma was eventually defeated Ladybug told Chat to meet her on an abandoned rooftop that night because they needed to talk.
Chat being the oblivious person that he is (I swear I don't actually hate chat noir, this is for the plot I'm sorry) thought that it was for a love confession and became overly smug before leaving.
Making sure that he isn't following her, Marinette meets up with Damian at his place (school's over because of the attack) and asks him to help.
Later that day when the two miraculous holders meet up Ladybug distracts the Catboy by flirting with him while Damian uses his ninja skills for something other than sneaking up on her and giving Marinette mini heart attacks.
From behind he quickly hits a pressure point causing the other boy to fall unconscious.
Using her ALMIGHTY GUARDIAN OF THE MIRACULOUS powers, Ladybug takes Adrien's ring away and places a spell on him that makes it so he will never be able to use another miraculous ever again.
After they take Adrien home Marinette gives Damian the ring and Night Prowler is born.
He promises to do everything in his power to make sure that Selina and his family doesn't find out for the sake of his pride.
We'll see how that goes.
Night Prowler first officially appeared during an akuma named 'Break Dancer'.
Ironically, she was a ballerina that had to drop out of the finals in a competition because she broke her right leg the day before the show.
She could turn civilians into back up dancers and forced them to perform against their will.
They also worked as minions who would attack the duo for her while she stayed a safe distance away.
It was pretty obvious that the akumatized item was the music box held inside the bag that Break Dancer had slung around her shoulders but the real question was how could they get to it without becoming attacked by the backup dancer or becoming one of them.
Luckily (eheheh), a car with an open window playing music just happened to pass by before driving off.
Before it drove off, the music coming from the car was loud enough to play over the music box which caused some of the minions to become free again and run off.
Ladybug called her lucky charm and a Bobby pin landed in her hand.
As she looked around she noticed a store a couple blocks away that had a couple radios.
Unfortunately, the store was locked and closed.
Fortunately, she knew how to pick locks and a Bobby pin did come from her lucky charm soooo......
Who is she to deny literal gods.
They break into the store and grab a radio, and a speaker and rush over to where the akuma was causing chaos.
They turn on the radio, connect the speaker and turn the volume on as loud as it can go before flipping through the stations for a good song.
If they're gonna fight with music in the background they're gonna be picky about it and wont settle for anything other than epic.
While fighting they eventually get swept up in the music and end up singing along.
It's nothing less than full on majestic.
When the fight is over and the akuma is purified they find out that someone recorded it and posted it on the internet as well.
Now everyone knows that the beloved hero of Paris and her new partner were the two people singing on that balcony.
Ummmmm.....
Good thing that the video quality was trash right?
If it weren't for that their identities would've been busted the moment they started singing in hero form.
Luckily there aren't many people other than Damian that know what Marinette's singing voice sounds like so they're okay.
Well.... They WERE okay,
Until a certain rockstar and his agent came across the two videos and put two and two together.
So now King Sting (bee!jagged) and Peridot (turtle!penny) have joined the team.
Poor Penny, now she has to deal with two gremlin children and a some sort of bizarre man-child.
The next akuma confused the group quite a bit.
He didn't really do anything but sit on a rooftop waiting for the miracle team to show up.
They were all suspicious of him at first but when they did reveal themselves to him he explained his situation.
He was akumatized because his favorite rock band broke up but he didn't really want to take their miraculouses away.
He just asked if they could perform another song for him and he would give his akumatized item to them.
They all sorta looked at eachother and collectively went 'screw it why not' and sang another song.
If they were great before, they are absolutely AMAZING now.
Well that's what happens when you add a famous rockstar to a team of singing superheros I guess.
The akuma was blown away and true to his word handed over the rolled up picture in his pocket and was purified despite of Hawkmoth's nagging.
Haha screw you Hawky.
This time the ordeal was recorded by a news station and the 'hand over the akuma in exchange for a song' thing became a trend.
There were still normal akuma's that didn't follow follow it but those were far flung between.
It seems like Hawkmoth was getting annoyed by this so there started being less akuma attacks over the months.
Because of this some people were actively trying to get upset to attract one of the purple butterflies.
They traded one good thing for another I guess.
To stop that from happening the group started performing in public as superheros during concerts and festivals.
Because of this they became quite well known outside of Paris as well.
Is it ironic that more people know them as a band rather than a superhero team now?
When Marinette learned that they could change what their superhero costumes looked like if they put enough will into it she squealed.
Marinette designs superhero performance costumes for them whenever they have a festival to play at.
Whenever asked about their outfits they always reply with MDC.
Marinette's business gets really popular after that.
And since no one knows who MDC really is, she doesn't have to worry about the whole "Oh no me and my family are gonna be in danger!" thing
It's a win win!
Overtime they basically become a second (or third for some people) family to eachother.
Damian becomes more 'kid like' and open to others,
Marinette becomes more confident and overall happier,
Jagged gets to hang out with his awesome niece and her 'maybe more than just a friend',
And Penny gets a new outlet for stress and has so many more crazy stories to tell people.
One day while she's in the living room on the sofa watching 'The AristoCats' Damian just barges into the room and dramatically flops over onto of her.
He just lays there with his head in her lap and the rest of his body sprawled on the couch.
After everything that has happened this is normal for them now.
Without asking any questions or talking at all they just watch the movie together with the occasional remark or quip between them.
Around half way through the movie Jagged kicks down the door, effectively scaring the crap out of the two teens, while Penny follows behind him with an apologetic look on her face.
At first Jagged was yelling about something having to do with'Fang' and 'Dragon' and 'Miraculous' but after taking in the domestic atmosphere of the room he just sits down on the floor and joins in on watching the movie.
Penny, shaking her head in both amusement and exasperation, sits down on another chair and does the same.
While combing through Damian's hair with her fingers Marinette looks around the room.
'My life can't get any more complicated, can it?'
Oh boy, she just jinxed it.
This is just an idea I've had bouncing around in my head for awhile and I couldn't resist the urge to write it out. I AM planning on making a part 2 so if you like this keep an eye out for that. I'm by no means a fast writer though so it will take a while. But then again not many people will probably read this soo.... Yeah.

You had managed to reach, what had once been, the town of Cherhill, whilst still being utterly oblivious to the fact Henry was trailing after you. The two of you had been playing a complicated game of cat and mouse, since you snuck out of his flat in London.
Frustratingly for Henry, he struggled to keep up with you, almost always an hour or more behind you from the last stop over you had taken. At one point, he had even been a mere thirty minutes behind you, in Froxfield, and was sure he'd catch up to you at the next safe house, only to spend an hour checking the two safe houses there and asking people if they had seen you, only to learn you had stopped in the mini-town long enough to replenish your supplies and get a thicker coat, before moving onto the next place.
“At least, she's keeping warm.” Henry said to himself, as he stepped out of the supply store and headed on his way to the next town, two hours away, in Marlborough.
Making it to Marlborough, Henry went to the only safe house the town had, a residential home, that was also the supply location for the area. He walked down the cracked and uneven sidewalk of the neighborhood, most of the houses on the street were dilapidated, boarded up or charred remains. So, it made finding the house easy, it was the best kept house on the block, but still in a level of disrepair.
“What do you want?” Asked a man standing outside the rough picket fence that bordered the dirt lawn.
“I'm looking for someone, a girl.” Henry told him, pulling his mobile out and showed him. “Have you seen her?” He asked, looking up at the windows at the second floor of the house.
The man leaned forward, squinting at the screen of Henry's mobile. “No.” He shook his head and pulled back. “We haven't had any girls come here in about a week.”
Henry sighed and rubbed at his gritty face, his temples throbbing, then turned away from the man. “I swear, when I get my hands on that girl.” He grumbled the empty threat, for the millionth time.
Pulling up the map on his mobile, Henry calculated the distance and time to the next mini-town of Cherhill, and how much time he had in the day. It was an almost three and a half hour walk to Cherhill from Marlborough, with two hours of sunlight remaining. So, sucking it up, Henry decided to chance it and walk there through the night.
Tumblr media
Getting into a room in Cherhill, you gingerly peeled your shoes and socks off your feet and rubbed at the raw skin and fat blisters that covered them. You weren't accustomed to walking for so long, for so far, and they felt like they had been worn down to your ankles.
Luckily, this pit stop was a little more accommodating, and you had a little bathroom in the room you were put up in, with the most absolute, teeniest tub you had ever seen in your life, and you lived near the bottom of London! But, you filled it with hot water and removed your clothing, sitting down on the dark stained toilet seat and soaked your feet into the water. Dipping a threadbare washcloth into the water, you used it to rub away some of the grit and dust that was caked into your skin. Once you soaked your feet for a little while, you rinsed your hair out in the sink, wishing you had some shampoo or soap, but settled for the plain water. Semi-refreshed, you redressed, nibbled on something for a late lunch and rested back against the bed, staring up at the water stained ceiling.
“Eric, how far is the next checkpoint?”
“Three hours, Ms.”
“When's sunrise?” You asked, rubbing at your eyes and pinching the bridge of your nose.
“Four hours, Ms.”
You laid there for a long moment, considering the sanity of walking yet another ten kilometers to Chippenham. “Oh, what's the worst that can happen?” You sighed, getting up and packing your things. “At least, I got to rest my feet.” You quipped to yourself, going out into the hall.
“Shit!” You snapped suddenly, looking down the long hallway and seeing the very last person you wanted to see, before dashing back into your room, in a complete panic. “How the fuck did he find me! How did the fucker even know I had come this far?!” You paced the room, shaking.
“Of course!” You berated yourself. “He's a goddamned High Marshal! It's all he does! All day, for years on end. But, why is he even bothering to come after me?” You shook your head, trying to clear the panic. “I'll worry about that later, I need to get the fuck out of here, before he sees me.”
You frantically looked around your room and spotted a godsend.
“Praise the gods.” You huffed, relieved for this room actually having a window.
You dropped the room key on the bed and rushed the window, pushing it open and looked out. You were on the third floor, so it was a fair drop to the ground outside. But, luckily there was a small metal balcony outside the second floor window of the room below yours. So, wiggling out your window backwards and hanging from the window frame, you dropped yourself the meter down to the balcony with loud clang and a shake of the rickety supports bolting the balcony into the red brick wall of the building.
Crouching there for a moment, to give the structure a moment to settle, you dropped the last meter to the ground at the first level of the building, then tucked tail and ran. Just as Henry's head popped through the open window of your abandoned room, he caught sight of you as you dashed around the side of the building.
“Fuck!” He barked, charging out of the room and down the hall, stomping down the six flights of stairs to the main lobby, then out the entrance door, calling your name as he chased after you through a cluster of trees.
Tumblr media
Henry had made it to Cherhill an hour before sunrise and exhausted as all hell. He had already decided to get a room, whether or not you were there, to take a power nap, before he fell flat on his face. He was no good as spent as he was from looking for you, then to take you back to London, for the trials. He still didn't know how he was going to get his hands on Mikey, but part of him didn't give a fuck about your brother, it was you, he was worried about.
Entering the safe house, a rundown, three story hotel, Henry took a deep breath in and out as he approached the front desk and the male behind it, reading some cover-less and water damaged book, and readied himself to hear that he had never seen your face before. The guy looked over the top of his book as he heard Henry step up to his counter, slowly setting it down on the desk on the other side of the counter, and stood.
“Wanting a room?” He asked, looking Henry over.
“Yeah.” Henry nodded his head. “Can you tell me if you've seen this girl?” He asked, turning the screen of his mobile towards him.
“Oh yeah, I have.” The guy nodded at your photo. “She got a room here not that long ago, a couple hours maybe.”
Henry's hope went up a teeny bit. “Is she still here?” He asked, in suspense.
“Uh..” He turned his back to Henry and stepped into a little room for a moment, before returning. “Her key is still gone, so she must still be in her room. Unless, she forgot to return it, it happens more than you could realize. But, it's not a surprise, many people up and leaving out of the blue around here..”
“What room is she in?” Henry asked, interrupting him, even more antsy.
“Third floor, room six.”
“Do you have a master key to open the door?” He asked, chewing on his lip.
“Yeah, but I can't just go up there and open her door for you.” The guy protested. “It's against policy.”
Growling, Henry turned on his heels and headed for the stairwell leading up to your room. If he wasn't going to open your door, then Henry would just kick it in. He wasn't going to go up there and knock, so you would have the time to figure out how to slip by him again.
“Hey!” The hotel worker yelled, running around the counter and rushed after Henry.
Stomping up the stairs, the guy managed to get ahead of Henry and block the doorway that led down the hallway of your floor. Standing his ground as Henry stopped before him, huffing angrily, like a bull just entering the ring to fight the matador.
“Get the fuck out of my way.” Henry hissed, between clenched teeth. “Now.”
“It is against Hotel policy to disturb the guests. If you don't leave this instance, I will be forced to call security.”
“Oh really!” Henry snapped, brows lifting. “And who is the security in this shit hole?” He asked, folding his arms over his chest.
The guy gulped as he watched the biceps of Henry's arms bulge through his clothing. “I-I am.” He squeaked, like a frightened mouse, facing down a panther.
“That's what I thought.” Henry chuckled, as a door slammed somewhere in the building. “You'll be getting out of my way.” He said, grabbing the front of the guy's shirt and jerked him out of the way, before storming down to your room door.
Henry thrust his size eleven boot through the flimsy door of your room and stormed in, feeling the cool breeze bellowing in through the open window. “Goddamn it!” He hissed, stomping to the window and thrusting his head out and watched you dive around the corner of the building.
“Fuck!” He barked, charging out of the room, down the hall and down the six flights of stairs to the main lobby, then out the entrance door, calling out your name as he chased after you through a cluster of trees.
Whether or not you liked it, Henry was there chasing after you, no longer just missing you at every mini-town from London to Cherhill. He was in minutes of you, charging through the thicket of trees to the East of the hotel you both had bolted from. Henry could just see you ahead of him, maybe half a soccer field away from him, so he started pushing himself and closed the gap between you, within a few short minutes.
“Stop!” He yelled, reaching out and grabbed the back of your backpack, yanking and sending you backwards, before locking his arms around your upper body, trapping you against his chest; both of you gasping for air.
“Just stop.” He panted softly, dropping his forehead against the crown of your head. “Please, just stop.”
You growled, almost sounding like an angry cat, as you kicked your legs out and struggled in Henry's embrace. But Henry's thick arms only held onto you tighter, not picking up his head as you did, but grunted as you fruitlessly tried jabbing him in the side with your elbows and stomp on his foot.
“Stop it.” He barked into your ear.
“Let go of me!” You screamed, half hoping someone would hear and come help you, giving you the advantage to run again.
“I'm not.” Henry rumbled, spinning you around to face him and keeping a firm hold on you. “I tracked your butt for nearly a hundred and sixty kilometers, to take you back to London, and that's where we're going, as soon as we can.” He told you, with a heavy sigh.
“I'm not going back to London, so you can get fucked!” You barked at him.
“Ah!” He snapped and just managed to block your attempted knee shot. “Yes, you are.”
“Then, I'll run again!” You hissed, still struggling with him.
Henry sighed again, squeezing his eyes shut, taking a hold of your elbow and marched you back to the hotel. “Room.” He growled at the hotel guy, who looked like he wanted to protest, but gave Henry a key anyway.
“What are you doing with her?” He called after the two of you.
“Mind your own business, shithead.” Henry barked over his shoulder as he pulled you up the stairs to the second floor. “Sit down.” He ordered, carefully pushing you into the room and pointed to the chair.
You stood in the middle of the room, arms defiantly crossed over your chest. Henry stared back at you, a war of unsaid words flowing between the pair of you through looks alone.
“Why did you run?” Henry asked, finally breaking the tense silence.
“My business.”
“Your business is my business, since you want to act like a fucking brat and run off in the middle of the night, without word or reason. Especially, since you've gotten me in hot water with my boss. So, out with it.” He scolded you, his body tense.
“I know it's about your brother.” He said, when you remained silent. “I know that he's a Runner, working for Jaxon Quinn in Bristol. That he's going there to get training to be a big time Runner, and you're terrified that he's in some sort of trouble.”
“Congratulations.” You smirked at him, smugly. “Now, get the fuck out of my way!” You barked, starting for the door, but Henry blocked it. “Get out of the way!” You yelled, pushing at him, but he didn't move.
“I'm not.” He told you, softly, but firmly, shaking his head.
“You're going to get him killed!” You screamed, your voice breaking.
Henry blinked down at you, shaking his head again, and reached out to cup your face in his hands, tilting your head back to look up at him, seeing the furious and frightened tears in your eyes that you had been trying to keep at bay since having the nightmare. His thumbs smoothed over your cheeks, wiping away the dripping tears from your lashes, his face pinched with concern and confusion at how upset and desperate you were to reach not only Bristol, but your brother.
“You have brothers, Henry.” You sniffled softly, voice weak. “Wouldn't you do anything in the world, that you could, to save and protect them, if they were in danger?”
You tried to reason with him, pleading to his sense of family and the protective nature you knew Henry harbored in his soul, the reason you knew was why Henry wanted to be a Marshal; he couldn't protect people as a Cleric and Royal, the way he could as a Marshal. Henry's face softened, so did his heart, he would do everything he could, including giving his own life, to save one of his brothers, if they were in danger and trouble. He understood, mostly, what you were doing with running off and trekking through dangerous lands to reach Mikey.
“What trouble is he in?” He asked, blinking at you.
“I-” You frowned, you knew Mickey was in trouble, terrible trouble. But, you didn't know what that trouble actually was, and sighed. “I don't know exactly.” You admitted, gulping. “But, I know he is.”
“I just—I just feel it, Henry.” You told him, choked up.
Henry sighed, feeling the space between the rock and a hard place he was currently trapped in, get a whole lot tighter. He didn't know what to do with your brother, but he saw how deeply you felt about it and couldn't ignore that. So, he moved back a couple spaces and just focused on you, now that he had you.
“We'll figure it out.” He told you, softly. “But, for now, why don't we just rest. I'm sure we're both drained after all of this.”
“That's an understatement.” You laughed, nodding your head and letting your shoulders melt under the weight of exhaustion and stress.
“Give me your shoes.” Henry said, suddenly.
“What?” You snapped back, your nose wrinkling in confusion as you looked up at him.
“I said, give me your shoes.” Henry repeated himself, pointing down at your filthy trainers. “You can't run without them.”
“You wanna bet!”
“We both know you can't, love.” He chuckled, smirking at you, smugly. “So, take them off and give them to me”
You sighed. “Henry, I'm not going to run again, I promise.”
“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Henry quoted, lifting a brow at you.
Rolling your eyes, you sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled your trainers off, tossing them to land at Henry's feet. Henry bent and picked up your shoes, shrugging his backpack off of his back and opened it, taking a couple of things, then shoved your shoes into his pack, zipping it up and connected the zipper to the hook below it, locking the backpack closed with a combination number; that wasn't his life pin.
“Why are you here, Henry?” You asked, narrowing your eyes at him as you flexed your sore toes.
“To get you.” He replied, uncapping his water bottle.
“Why?” You asked, drawing it out. “You wouldn't just chase me because you wanted to. What, you worried about losing out on your six thousand credits? Wanting them back.”
“No!” Henry barked, enraged at the thought that all he wanted out of you was money. “I was worried about your fucking safety.”
“I made it here in one piece.” You said, gesturing around.
“That's not what I meant.” He mumbled, moving across the room to the window. “Completely.”
You narrowed your eyes at his broad back. “What aren't you telling me?” You asked, feeling the vibe fill the room.
“What am I not telling you? What haven't you been telling me?” He hissed, turning back to you. “You ditch out in the middle of the night, without a word or note telling me to get fucked, to trek across this barren waste, risking your safety, for your drug dealing, crime running brother, because you feel he's in trouble.”
“Don't mock me.” You growled back at him, your own anger bubbling. “I knew you wouldn't believe me, if I woke you up to tell you that I had a dream about him being killed. I knew you'd fucking mock me about and tell me it was just a dream and to go back to bed. That you wouldn't understand the deep gut feeling I have that it isn't just some random dream I had.” You paused, trying to get a hold of yourself.
“It's a deep and hot feeling in my gut, like a sharp knife to my bowels; that hurt so much. That bond between him and I, vibrates with it. I couldn't just sit in your flat and ignore it, and I sure hell wasn't going to tell a High Marshal about my brother being an Adjutant Runner for Quinn. That would be a career maker for--”
You froze and stared at him, wide eyed, feeling the pieces fall into place. Henry knew about your brother, he knew everything about him and his activities, and knew that you were running straight for Mikey. It was perfect for Henry, follow you to Mikey, drag both of you back to London and turn Mikey into the Supreme Marshal and the Clerics. He'd be hailed a hero, given a promotion and a medal and who knows what else for it.
Oh, you felt like clawing his beautiful blue eyes out of his smug fucking skull.
“You fuck.” You said, your voice dripping with barely contained anger and slightly sibilant. “You're just using me to get to Mikey.”
Henry pressed his lips together and pushed his jaw forward, then nodded his head. He grabbed the back of the chair and set it down in front of you, plopping down on it. “I was going to come after you, before I knew anything specific about your brother. I figured, since you were heading for Bristol, that he was into some sort of crime, people don't tend to go there if they're not. I was afraid you would get hurt, and god knows what else.”
“I didn't give a fuck about the money I spent to get you out of Twist's hell hole, or the money you took for the mobile and backpack you have.” He said, eyeing them. “Just you. But, my boss, Supreme Marshall Dylon Reyes, called me, while I was out looking for you. To tell me that the Council of Clerics were starting the trails on Twist and his associates for their operations, you're a witness in that case.” He explained to you.
“A witness.” You echoed.
“Yes. You were there, one of the victims. So, the Council would want to talk to you, ask you questions and take your statement about anything you saw or heard there, the things you went through. My purchase of you, was done to verify that Twist was indeed selling people as Slaves and Servants. Keeping you, was, I don't fucking know. I was just told that it was final and I had too.”
“So, you did.”
“Obviously.” He snorted, lifting a brow at you. “But, it was also to keep an eye on you, to make sure you were kept safe from any of Twist's allies and higher up bosses.”
“Why would they care, I'm not the only one that was there.” You said, narrowing your eyes at him.
“Of the fourteen people we took out of that warehouse that had been kidnapped, just like you, under the same pretenses, you're the only one that had a buyer. So, you're considered more high profile.”
The muscles in your jaw twitched and your skin tingled with the hot heat of your fury, that unleashed with rock solid slap to Henry's tired and scruffy cheek, actually jerking his head to the side, from the force. Henry grunted and hissed at the searing pain of the slap, like lava had been splashed in his face. His hands gripped his knees and he shook his head against some of the pain, before looking back at you, his blue eyes darker than a stormy ocean and jaw tight.
“This is your fault.” You barked at him, trembling. “If it wasn't for you, if you had just purchased someone else in that line up, I would be home right now! I would have been able to convince Michail into not going to Bristol with that damn handler, months ago. Months ago, Henry!” You screamed, wanting to strike him again, but his hands shot out and gripped your wrists, pinning your hands to your thighs.
“I fucking hate you, dear god! I fucking hate you, so much.”
“I can live with that, if it means keeping you safe.” Henry growled through a tight jaw.
“I don't need you to protect me!” You snapped, jerking against him.
“Like fuck you don't!” He hissed, bringing his face closer to yours. “Your dear brother works for Jaxon Quinn, the second worse fucking Crime Boss this country has!”
“I know who the fuck he is!”
“Did you know he's the one that helped Twist fund that little warehouse you were imprisoned in?” He asked, lifting his brows at you. “Did you know that he's got people out here wanting to kill you? Because, if you can't make it to that interview with the Clerics, everything about Twist and that operation won't end well. They'll just get stuck with a few millions in fines, a couple of banishments, maybe someone getting sent to the Iron Tombs prison or executed. All of which people like Jaxon Quinn don't fucking feel, cause millions of credits is pocket money to him, just like the lives of the people that will be ruined and snuffed out, because there's thousands of people waiting in line to take their places.”
“Such as your brother.”
Your blazing anger turned to ice in your stomach and you nearly puked your guts out at the thought of a hit-man around some corner, waiting to kill you, or your brother taking the place of someone that had been killed by the justice system of London for their part in Quinn's business.
“That's why I came after you.” Henry said softly, easing the pressure he was putting on your wrists. “People are out here, wanting to kill you. You have a price on your head, and you're about to walk into the house, where every last one of those dirt-bags, live. Do you understand the danger you are in? Your feeling about Mike being in trouble could be true, but it also could just be the realistic feel of a nightmare.”
“But, the danger you are in is real.”
He tried to make you understand, he was desperate that you understood that your life was in danger and you being out here and heading for Bristol was only increasing that danger and making it easier for them to find and kill you.
“It won't stop me.” You said, softly. “I have to get to Mikey before something happens to him.”
“I'll tell you what happens to him.” Henry said, frustrated and tired. “You find him, his handler finds out that you're his sister and they kill you both.”
“No questions. No begging. Just both of you dying.”
A chill raced down your spine, the revelation spiraling around your brain. “That must be it.” You said, eyes flaring at Henry. “What if he does find out about Mikey being my brother, somehow?”
Henry let go of your wrists and rubbed at his face, hunching over his chair. “I don't know, maybe.” He huffed into his palms. “Is there a shower in this place?” He asked, looking up at you.
“I don't know if this room does, but I had a micro-bathtub in my room.” You retorted, looking towards the half open bathroom door.
Getting up with a tired and sore groan, Henry pushed open the bathroom door and found it did indeed have a shower and another micro-bathtub, so much to his relief. He turned back to you, studying you for a long moment, before taking off his jacket, shoes and socks, then pulled his sweater over his head, tossing them all onto the chair.
“I'm going to take a shower.” He told you, his voice measured with the still rocky trust the two of you had for each other.
“Okay.” You replied, staring back at him.
Henry slowly turned towards the bathroom, like he expected you to suddenly bolt for the door or window, but you stayed where you were on the edge of the bed. Sighing, Henry entered the bathroom, but didn't close the door all the way, in case you ran and he needed to go after you; possibly naked and wet. He spun the loose hot tap and the shower head sputtered to life, he stood there for a long time, waiting for the water to heat up, as he stared at his exhausted reflection through the spiderweb cracks running through the broken mirror, before removing his jeans and boxers, dropping them on the tank of the old toilet and stepped under the weak spray, with a loud groan.
You sighed, hearing the shower turn on and moved your backpack into your lap. Unzipping it, you removed your water bottle and a package of food you bought at the last supplier's. You sat there eating your food and drinking your water, trying to block out the thought of Henry naked just mere feet from you, and being able to catch a glimpse of his body through the fogged up mirror above the chipped sink and the open door.
“You know, Teddy Wang said you held him up at knife point.” Henry said, coming out of the shower in nothing but socks and his jeans, as he rubbed a hole strewn towel over his dripping head; still chuckling at the thought.
“Because, I did.” You retorted, glancing out the window and not his warm and pink torso.
Henry stopped and blinked down at you. “Really?” He laughed, a grin of amusement spreading across his lips.
“Yes.” You snapped, looking back at him. “He wouldn't tell me what I wanted to know, so I took out the knife my dad gave me and told him what I would do with it, if he didn't.” You informed him, angry at his amusement.
“Lord, I can only wonder what you told Fynn, to make him talk.” He roared with laughter.
“I told him, I would use his own door to bash his head in.” You replied, narrowing your eyes at him.
“I was sure you could take care of yourself, but I didn't take you as such a violent little thing.” Henry said, still unendingly tickled. “I mean, maybe I should be surprised. You did nearly take my head off with that slap of yours.” He chuckled, rubbing his cheek at the residual sting.
Letting out a frustrated growl, sick of people not taking you seriously, and the situation period, you launched off the bed and towards Henry, catching him off guard enough to send both of you into the wall. But, Henry recovered quickly, turning and pressing you up against the wall.
“Easy there, little nugget.” He grinned at you.
“Don't call me that!” You barked, struggling against him.
“Call you what?” He chuckled, enjoying your little rampage. “Nugget?”
“Yes!” You hissed, pressing your palms against his bare chest and tried pushing him off of you.
“Or what, Nugget?” He continued to chuckle, barely teetering as you pushed against him. “Hey now!” He snapped, squeezing his legs shut, planted his hands under your arms and pushed you up the wall, until your faces were level. “That's the second time you tried kneeing me there. That's not very nice, Nugget.”
“Oh my god, stop calling me that, you big brute!” You huffed. “Or else!”
Henry smirked at you, bringing his face close to yours. “Or else, what?” He said in a low and deep voice.
You knew you should just give up, he had you out matched in nearly everything, your feet were dangling above the dingy carpet, as he held you up against the wall, like you weighed less than the wallpaper peeling off of it.
So, you did something he wouldn't expect.
Licking your lips and taking advantage of how close his face was to yours, the tips of your noses lightly brushing, you tilted your head and kissed him on the lips. Henry nearly dropped you, in shock of feeling your warm lips against his, his mouth falling open and his pupils dilating. You didn't pull back, but you didn't deepen the kiss either. Henry slowly closed his mouth, his full lips cradled your bottom lip for a moment, before he pulled his head back and looked at you, licking his lips and tasting the sweetness of yours on his tongue.
He let out a shuddering breath, eyes darkening as he stared into yours. He saw a look eclipse your face and brought his lips back to yours, kissing them with a soft smack echoing in the room. You let out a soft breath through your nose and whimpered, eyes half falling shut. Henry smirked and chuckled softly against your mouth and kissed you deeper, his arms moving to wrap around you, pressing you closer against his body. You wrapped your arms around his neck and picked up your hanging legs to wrap them around his waist, nudging your mouth against his, feeling a growing bubble of desire and need for him.
One arm hugged around your waist, Henry planted a hand on the wall by your head, swirling his tongue against your mouth as his head tilted to the side, moaning deep in his throat and chest. His hand went to tangle in your hair, as the pair of you heatedly made out. The kiss was hungry and almost sloppy, you panted as Henry kissed down your mouth and chin to your neck, nibbling and biting at the pounding pulse under your jaw. You pushed your head back, letting your eyes finally fall closed as he sucked on your throat, whimpering softly as he sank his teeth into the bruised skin.
“Fuck.” He huffed and pressed his forehead against your temple. “I want you.” He moaned against your cheek, out of breath and gasping for air, as his blunt fingers and nails clawed and tugged at the waistband of your pants. “I've wanted you.” He admitted, eyes rolling shut as his clothed cock rubbed against your covered pussy, begging to be buried in the heat it knew was there, like it was sonar.
Chuckling, you nudge your cheek against his, amused by the turn of events. You had only kissed him to see if he would let you go and quit calling you, Nugget; not have the two of you melt into a heated and passionate lip battle, leaving both of you breathless and clearly wanting for the other. You would be lying, if you didn't admit that you had thought about Henry like this from time to time, wanting to see what he looked like naked, all in a hard pant, his skin damp with sweat and a pink glow from his spent effort; the feel of him inside of you. But, it also gave you qualms, deep in the pit of your stomach as well, a soft shyness washing over you for a moment, before you felt the nudge of Henry's hips against yours again, throwing it out the window and into the dying sunlight.
“Me too.” You admitted into the shell of his ear, nose brushing the still damp curls around it. “I want you too, Henry.” You whispered, breathless, and hugged your legs tighter around his hips.
Henry let out such a growl against your neck, that you let out a needy whimper, as he pushed you both off the wall, taking a step back and turning towards the bed, laying you down on it. He unhooked your legs from around his hips and fumbled with the button of your pants, before shoving them and your underwear down your hips and thighs; so you could kick out of them, while he removed his own jeans. Henry was attacking your mouth and throat again, his hands diving under the hem of your shirt and going straight for your breasts. You moaned at the feel of his lips against your skin, his hot hands squeezing and kneading your breasts in his palms, and the free feeling of his cock rubbing shamelessly against your bare folds, making the muscles of your thighs tremble from how good it felt.
“You like that, don't you?” He asked, in a husky voice, loving the sounds you were making as he humped against you.
“God, yes.” You mewled, dragging your nails down his broad back.
He chuckled, bracing his arms at either side of your head and looked down at you, watching you melt into the mattress beneath you. “You're still a virgin, aren't you?” He asked, his head tilting as he shifted his weight to one arm and glided his fingertips over your stomach.
You looked up at him and gave an audible gulp, nodding your head and looking up at him like a frightened rabbit. A smirk grew on his scruffy face, fingers circling your navel before dipping low, to rub the pads of two fingers against your sensitive clit. Henry wasn't put off by your virginity, but he didn't want to ruin it by succumbing to his animal desire to thrust his, well-endowed, cock into your tight, little hole and fuck you within an inch of your life, either. You whimpered and bucked up against his fingers, crazy for more friction. Henry clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, shaking his head at you and grinning like a hungry wolf.
“None of that, Nugget.” He cooed at you, removing his fingers from your wet folds and licked them clean; his eyes never leaving yours. “Have you ever touched yourself?” He asked, tilting his head at you.
You nodded your head, mutely.
He reached out and took your hand into his, pulling it down between your legs, and flattened two of your fingers down on your clit, and pressed them down with his own, gently guiding both of your hands in a slow and easy motion against it, watching your face for a few moments, before removing his hand, letting you continue touching yourself on your own, and looked down between your bodies. You had heard enough about sex from Mikey and your co-workers to know, this wasn't how you did it, but you did know about touching yourself, you had done on and off since you were a teen. But, you had never done it in front of anyone before, and doing it with Henry leaning over you, his eyes intent on your fingers, made you incredibly self-conscious.
“Henry..” You moaned out, trying to put the sound of a question in it, but your brain couldn't form it.
Henry's eyes flickered towards yours and smirk. “What, you just want me to shove my massive cock in that tight and little hole of yours?” He quipped, teasing you softly, his fingers brushing the skin between your breasts. “If I did that, you wouldn't be walking anywhere, for a very long time.” He chuckled, kissing the tip of your nose.
His fingers moved down your torso, skirting around your still working hand and teased a fingertip between your folds, ringing it around your entrance and coming back with a thick string of come. “Take that finger,” He tapped your middle finger. “and slip it in that sweet hole of yours for me.” He said, nodding his head at you, encouragingly.
“I--” You choked up, eyes wide, and gulped. “I've--” You gulped, flustered.
“Oh,” Henry chuckled, brushing your hair off your sweaty forehead. “You're a button rubber.”
“A what?” You squeaked, confused and caught off guard.
“You rub your little button.” He cooed, tapped your clit, with a smirk. “To get off. Without touching your core.” He gently pushed the very tip of his thick finger into your entrance. “A virgin, in almost every way.”
“That's okay, you can do it.” He encouraged you. “Nice and easy, Nugget.” He purred, moving his finger out of your way.
Gulping again, you slowly inched your hand away from your clit, fingers cupping your folds for a moment, as you hesitated, trying to muster the courage off of Henry's face and into yourself, before, very slowly, parting your folds with the tip of your middle finger and towards your entrance. It felt strange to push your finger into yourself. It was deep, wet, so much warmer than you thought, and soft. You touched something deep inside of your cunt and gasped, toes curling.
“Oh, someone found her sweet spot.” Henry chuckled, playfully tapping you on the nose.
“It feels so good.” You whimpered, rubbing at it a little bit more, biting your lip.
“That's good.” He smiled, watching you start to mindlessly thrust your finger in and out. “That's it.” He encouraged you, basking in the sight, rubbing his palm up and down your quivering thigh, before turning his hand to join yours. “No, no.” He murmured as you started to remove your finger. “Keep that finger right there.” He said, the tip of his finger brushing the underside of yours.
Henry tickled the edge of your folds for a moment, before slipping it under yours and gingerly pushed it in to join your own finger inside of you, stretching you wide open. He leaned down and pressed his lips to the corner of your mouth as you whimpered, uncomfortable at the almost painful stretch of your combined fingers. He shushed you and timed his thick digit with your smaller one, gently joining the tip of your finger at your sweet spot, and added even more pressure to it, making you cry out loud, throwing your head back.
“You're doing so well.” He praised you, nuzzling the side of your face with his. “I can't wait to have my cock inside of you.” He panted, eyes rolling shut at the idea. “Let's see if you can take one more.” He said, curiously. “Pull your finger halfway out.” He instructed you, rubbing his next finger in the juices dripping from you, then poising it at your hole.
“Just like that, good girl.”
Carefully shifting his first finger around yours, Henry pressed his new finger through the ring of muscle surrounding your entrance, taking it slow.
“Just relax.” He cooed at you, pressing his knees against the edge of the bed to shift his weight and used his now free hand to caress the side of your hot face and rubbed his palm over your chest, trying to help your relax. “Deep breaths. That's it. Very good.” He smiled at you, his finger halfway in.
“Henry, please.” You mewled, chewing your lip to bits.
“Hush.” He whispered, caressing the pad of his thumb down the bridge of your nose. “Gotta get you nice and open for my cock, love.” He told you, breathing heavy has the rest of his finger slide home with the first. “It'll hurt so much more, if I don't, and I don't want to hurt you, darling.” He said, a rush of icy goosebumps racing over his body at the sweet whimper that left your parted lips.
“Put your finger back in.”
“I can't.” You whimpered, shaking your head at him.
“Yes, you can.” He said softly, nodding his head and holding your eyes. “Come on, sweetheart.” He cooed at you, sweetly. “You can do it for me, can't you? Don't you want me to be inside of you?” He asked, coaxing you. “Keeping you nice and warm.” He added with a chuckle, feeling the creeping cold of the night outside coming through the thin walls and windowpane, chilling the sweaty skin of his naked body.
You gulped at the tone of his dirty talking, feeling it going straight to your pussy, making Henry chuckle as he felt the pooling wetness growing around your combine fingers. Whimpering softly, you pushed your finger back into the tight space above Henry's big ones.
“There, see.” Henry smiled, kissing your forehead. “Not so bad, is it, love?” He asked, crooking his, and your, fingers into your sweet spot and rubbed at it, with measured experience. “How's that feel, baby?” He asked, leaning in to kiss you, lazily.
“It feels so good, Henry.” You moaned against his mouth. “So fucking good.”
“Just wait til you have my cock in you, it'll feel a million times better.” He promised.
“I want it now.” You whined, nudging him.
“Just a little bit long, honey.” He cooed, kissing your hot cheek. “There's a little something I want you to give me first, just to make sure you're nice and relaxed, and comfy, for me to nestle inside this sweet little hole of yours.”
“Hen--”
“Ah-Ah, Sshhh.” He interrupted you, shaking his head and starting to work his fingers in and out, taking your finger with them. “Enjoy it, darling.”
You moaned aloud, licking your lips and pushing your head back, eyes rolling shut at the phenomenal feeling of the teamwork your joined fingers were pulling off inside you. You rocked your whole body down on your and his fingers, driving them deeper inside of you and stretching you wider with each motion. Henry smiled down at you, watching you lose yourself in the motion and moment; and he hadn't even given you the best part yet. He slowly slipped his fingers free of your core, you blissfully unaware of the change as you continued to fuck your own finger.
“I can't wait to have you squirt all over my cock.” He said aloud, his eyes glued to your finger, then watched the change slowly wash over you as your orgasm neared. “That's it, sweetheart. Fuck that finger good, come all over it.” He said in a husky and arousal dripping voice, feeling himself get even harder at the sight, and started rubbing your swollen clit.
“H-Hen-Henry.” You gasped, breathing hard, as your toes curled against the amazing hot flood rushing through your sweaty body; rubbing your clit alone had never felt this good.
“Come.” He hissed, eyes huge and focused on you. “Come for me. Soak the the bed, baby. You can do it, come on.” He encouraged you, a free hand moving to his hot and swollen cock, giving it a few pumps.
“Fuck! Oh, fuck!” You mewled, face contorting as your orgasm started to peak. “Henry!” You cried out, before finally falling into your orgasm and drenched your finger, leaving a damp spot on the duvet beneath you.
Henry licked his lips, the heavy and pleasing aroma of your arousal filling his nose; it made him hum. “See that? Told you, you could do.” He said, when you were halfway recovered. “And you didn't even need my fingers.” He added, with a sly grin.
“Huh?” You squeaked, looking down your heaving body to see his fingers still resting lightly on your clit, and your own finger still inside your core. “Oh fuck.” You chuckled shyly, your face heating up.
Henry chuckled and kissed you deeply. “Now, you can have my cock, sweetheart.” He smiled slyly at you.
“I don't know what—” You cut yourself off, feeling self-conscious again, and looked away from him.
You didn't know what to do once he was inside of you, you hadn't known what to do with your own finger inside of you, if it wasn't for Henry's fingers there as well, and him instructing you. But, Henry was very experienced in the art of lovemaking, and wasn't surprised or bothered by your inexperience in it; he had his own solutions to such things. So, he wrapped your heavy legs around his waist and your arms about his neck, before putting his arms around your waist. Henry lifted you up, so he could stand to his full height, slipping an arm beneath your bottom as he did, to keep you from slipping.
“It's all right, sweet girl.” He assured you, moving to the head of the bed and sat down. “Take your shirt off.” He told you, tugging on the garment.
Biting your lip shyly, you grabbed the hem of your shirt and pulled it off over your head, tossing it to the floor. Henry smiled and smoothed his palms up your back to the clasp of your bra and popped it free. Slipping the straps of your bra off your shoulders, Henry tossed the undergarment to the floor with your shirt and leaned forward to place open mouthed kisses to the supple skin of your breasts, nuzzling his face between them and leaving, almost painful, love bites in their wake. You whimpered, hugging your arms around his neck and hiding your face into his hair, feeling the solid and hot flesh of his cock press up against your thighs and ass.
Moaning against your skin, as your shifting rubbed your ass down against his cock, Henry turned and laid back on the bed, his head on the dingy and flat pillow, all the stuffing flattened from years of use. He held you in his lap, as you straddled him, and pulled up his knees to give you a little more stability. Henry gripped your hips to move you, so you knelt on your knees over him, then reached between your legs to take himself in hand, lining up with your sticky entrance, and pushed his hips up enough to press the fat and swollen tip of his cock just into you, then held his hips there.
“Very slowly, push yourself down.” He instructed you, nodding his head at you, as he broke out in a sweat, that plastered his curls to his forehead. “That's good. Keep it up, baby.” He said, breathing hard.
You pushed your hips down on Henry's cock, feeling how hot and hard it actually was as it filled you more and more. There was only a little bit of extra stretch as he entered you, but it wasn't uncomfortable and the slickness left over from your orgasm helped make it easier to do. It took some slow patience, but you finally had your fill of Henry inside of you, shifting in his lap.
“That feels so different.” You whimpered, feeling like he was deep inside of your stomach.
Henry smiled up at you, chuckling. “I'm sure.” He replied, nudging his hips upwards. “I'm nice and deep into your cervix.” He commented, feeling it wrapped around his cock. “Are you okay?” He asked, taking a few deep breaths, to keep a handle on himself.
“I'm-I'm fine.” You assured him, flustered at the feeling of him rubbing up against your cervix. “Wh-what do you wa-want me t-to do?” You asked, gulping thickly.
“So eager.” Henry teased, kneading your hips in his palms. “Just follow my motion.” He said, looking up at you.
Gripping your hips more securely, Henry started moving you back and forth on his cock, keeping himself firmly housed inside of you, while hitting all the right places, including rubbing your still sensitive and swollen clit against his belly. You gasped aloud, your hands gripping his wrists, and rocked faster, but Henry held you off, keeping your motion slow and steady, not wanting either of you to rush it.
“Easy, baby girl.” He cooed at you, letting go of your hips and rubbing his palms up and down your thighs. “We have all night, sweetheart. Take your time. I'm not going anywhere, I promise.” Henry shifted his hips as you continued to ride him in an easy pace, feeling the sticky smear of your juices all over his stomach and cock.
Henry had dreamt about this, in the lone times he didn't have crippling nightmares.
Tumblr media
You would come into his bedroom, like you would when he was having a bad dream. Running your hand up and down his chest, touching his face and playing with his hair, before moving your hand down his taut stomach and into the elastic waistband of his pajama pants; rubbing his soft cock and fondling his balls, making him slowly grow against your warm palm. Wrapping your hand around the base of his then swollen cock, your hand would slide up and down the long length, swirling your thumb around his sensitive head; smiling so sweetly at him, when he moaned deep in his throat and thrust up into your grasp. Your pace was maddeningly slow compared to the hot need Henry had to be inside of you; spilling his load as deeply as he possibly could into you, and hear you call out his name as you orgasmed.
It didn't take long for that to happen as you lifted away the fabric of his pants, his eyes dropping to your still stroking hand. Smirking, you let his cock fall heavily to his abdomen and stomach. Henry gulped as you moved over him, straddling his waist and kneeling over him, hands braced against his broad chest for a moment. You reached back with one hand, taking up his cock again and bringing it to your weeping pussy, sliding him into the comforting, eye fluttering, warmth of your core, making Henry call out and grab your hips, planting his feet and thrust into you with one fluid motion, burying himself so completely inside of you.
Tumblr media
“Oh!” You gasped suddenly, bringing Henry back from remembering the dream. “Henry.” You whimpered, as you felt the intoxicating build of a second orgasm.
Henry's hands moved from your thighs to the back of your arms, pulling you down on top of him. Wrapping his arms around you and kissing the top of your head, he kept his knees bent, using his planted feet on the squeaky mattress to push up into you. Keeping the same easy rocking, but driving himself so much deeper, that it sent spasms of pleasure throughout your whole body. You moaned into his neck, panting opening mouthed against the skin of his shoulder, sounding so soft and sweet in Henry's ear.
It wasn't long before Henry felt the unraveling snake of pleasure overcome him, his cock pulsed and throbbed inside of you, his natural instincts kicking in and made his movements involuntary as he continued to wildly thrust, his balls tightening in preparation. You could feel every muscle in Henry's body tense up, his loud, uncensored and lewd sounds grunting and moaning into your ear and hair, both of you could feel the rapid beating of your hearts pounding together with your chests pressed together; the feeling of his cock throbbing into you keeping in time with each heartbeat. He was at the point of no return now, with a few more thrusts, he push himself as deep into you as he could, scrunching you both up in the process, and came.
The strong and hot spurts of his come going off inside of you, drumming your cervix like a demolition hammer. You let out one sound, then came and squirted around Henry's still spewing cock, drenching his abdomen and balls with your release; leaving yet another puddle on the bed. Both of you became dead weight, spent from all the walking and stress, magnified by the mind-blowing orgasms you shared. Henry's hands slowly came to life, rubbing up and down your back and sides, head turning to kiss your temple as he did.
Neither of you said anything, neither of you needed to say anything. It had all been spoken in that intimate moment, saying what words could not. You sighed softly, the scent of his sweaty skin in your nose as you nuzzled his neck, feeling the deep tug of sleep take over you. Henry smiled softly, brushing his fingers through your hair, kissing your forehead as he felt you fall asleep, the soft change of your breathing, chilling his skin. He pushed his head back into the pillow and mattress, staring up at the stained drop ceiling with a huge grin crossing over his face, he hadn't felt this satisfied and relaxed in a very long time, he had never felt this complete either, as he fell asleep with you.
Tumblr media
You woke a little while later, still laying on top of Henry, his soft cock still buried in your sore pussy. Biting your lip, you carefully sat up, freezing as Henry moaned and shifted in his sleep. You reached out and gently soothed his curls off his forehead, until he relaxed and dropped back off into a deep sleep, before carefully moving off him, biting back a moan as his cock slipped free and you could get off the bed.
Henry stirred again, and you again played with his hair.
“Ssshh.” You whispered to him softly, heart pounding. “Sleep sweet, Henry.” You cooed at him, using your other hand to rub his chest, knowing how well it calmed him. When he finally relaxed again, you tiptoed into the bathroom, carefully feeling for the toilet in the darkness, not wanting to turn the light on and wake Henry up. Finding it, you groaned as your butt touched the ice cold seat, and relieved yourself with a sigh. Stepping back out of the bathroom, you glanced around and spotted Henry's backpack. Every nerve and cell in your body told you to grab it and break into it, taking back your shoes and the rest of your stuff, and bolt out of the room; nighttime be damned, you needed to get to Mikey.
You almost did go for it, before you heard Henry softly mumble out your name in his sleep. He was dreaming about you. So, it wasn't only you that dreamed of him, that your mind-blowing and intense sex wasn't just because you had given him an opening to do so. Henry actually wanted to have sex with you, because he was in love with you.
“Goddamn it.” You huffed softly, your breath coming out in a light fog in the chill of the room, feeling the chemicals of your flight mode die away as you watched him sleep from the foot of the bed, and he mumbled out your name, yet again.
Shaking your head, you grabbed the first shirt like object off the floor and pulled it on, before stepping over to the curtain-less window. You were so conflicted, you wanted to leave and get to Bristol, it was only a ten hour walk from Cherhill, and according to the antique clock on the wall, it was only three in the morning. If you left now, you could power walk it to Bristol, gaining more time between you leaving and Henry potentially waking up. Then, by the time he reached you again, you would be in the heavily populated city, making it a million times easier for you to hide from him, as you searched for your brother.
You looked over your shoulder at Henry and sighed, but you couldn't just abandon him again either. Especially, after the night you both had. It would have been a kick to his trust if you had ran again, but an even bigger drop kick to his heart, ruining whatever was potentially happening between the pair of you. He would never trust you again, he would never love you again. He would either finally treat you like the Slummer Slave he had purchased, or he would just throw you to the Council of Clerics, letting them do with you as they pleased. Sighing again, you rubbed at your tired face, turning back towards the window, and looked out over the back of the hotel, the half moon resting on the tips of the trees beneath it, throwing a eerie silvery light through their branches.
“What am I going to do?” You asked yourself, breath fogging up the windowpane in front of you, oblivious of Henry starting to stir on the bed behind you.
The slow alarm sounded through Henry's skull as his body realized that your weight was no longer on top of him. His unconscious mind's first attempt to remedy this, was to roll over onto his side, figuring you had simply rolled off of him in the might. A hand sluggishly moving out over the mattress in search of you, but came up empty. He moaned in his sleep, brow furrowing, before his alert blue eyes popped open and panned around the room in front of him, the bathroom door was dark, but open, a quick glance to the room door showed it was still locked, but you could have taken the key and locked it behind you as you ran again.
His heart started to pound, with the anxiety of possibly losing you, and anger that you had broken your promise not to run again. He rolled onto his back, to get up out of bed, but paused, finding you standing at the window, wearing nothing, but his knit sweater, to keep the chill of the room at bay, to some extent. He was relieved to see you hadn't run after all, but he could tell by the way you stood and hugged your arms around yourself, that you were having a mental war with yourself. Frowning, he sat up, reaching out for his boxers and pulled them back on, before standing up to move behind you.
You gasped at the touch of Henry's hand on your hip. “Christ.” You let out in a frightened huff.
Henry smiled softly at you. “I'm sorry.” He chuckled softly. “I didn't mean to scare you.” He said, kissing the back of your hair and wrapping his arms around your shoulders, hugging you back against him, to share the extra warmth of his body, and rested his chin on the top of your head.
“Anything interesting?” He asked gently, looking out the window.
You knew what Henry meant, he wanted you to confide in him, tell him what you were thinking and what was clearly bothering you. You sighed and squeezed your eyes shut, your stomach was in knots, as you thought about him and your brother, torn between the two men. Did you tell Henry you weren't going back to London with him, no matter what, breaking his heart and incurring his wrath? Or, did you let your brother reap his choice to work for dangerous people, potentially getting himself kill? It had been Mikey's choice to work for Jaxon Quinn, he knew the risks and rewards of doing so.
Everyone did.
You sighed again, the weight of your conflict sounding with that outtake of air. Henry took a soft intake of air through his nose and let it out again, your body was tense against his. He really didn't need to ask what you were thinking, or really how you were feeling, he could sense it, and had known about it the moment he learned all the facts in the matter. He just figured it would help you relax and come to a conclusion on what to do, if you talked about it.
“He's my brother, Henry.” You whispered, leaning your head back against his chest, but kept your eyes out the window.
“I know.” He replied, gently.
“But,” You frowned at the faint reflection of you both in the window, a new knot twisting in your stomach.
“But?” Henry frowned back.
“But, I-” You chewed on your lip for a moment, mustering up some courage. “I also love you.”
Henry felt a tingling warmth in his chest, hearing your words, pressing his lips together as he tried controlling the smile on his face. “I love you too.” He confessed, feeling a weight lift off of him.
“I don't want to choose.” You added, almost soundlessly.
Henry sighed, the smile turning into a frown as he heard your words. “I know you don't.” He said, softly, and closed his eyes, feeling the swell of conflict fill him as well.
He honestly didn't want to make you choose between him and Mikey, knowing that whatever choice you did make, you would end up regretting it, because it wasn't the other option. He felt you get squeezed into the same rock and hard place he was currently trapped in.
“Come back to bed.” He said, finally. “It's cold.”
Neither of you moved for a moment, before you let Henry pull you back to bed, slipping under the thin duvet with you and curling his body around yours to keep you warm, letting you use his arm as a pillow. But, as you both, slowly, drifted back off to sleep, Henry had already made the choice of what the two of you were going to do next, when the sun finally rose again.

summary:  escaping an ugly past, you have no choice but to return home. While much has remained the same, Officer Rogers is a new addition who has won over the hearts of the town in your absence. And no one believes you when you start to see him for who he really is
~
The man behind the counter welcomed you with a warm smile as you approached. Maybe he could sense your uneasiness as you hesitantly placed your hands on the counter, looking at him with a nervous smile.
“Hi,” you quietly greeted. “Um… I need a gun.”
The brunette chuckled, blue eyes filled with mirth as he eyed you.
“No kidding,” he replied, gesturing around to the rest of the gun and hunting and supplies store.
“Right,” you chuckled. “I just… I need something small and easy to handle.”
You bit your lip, and his face slowly grew solemn as he ran his eyes over you.
“You don’t look like a hunting kind of gal,” he quietly insinuated.
You shook your head.
“No.”
He nodded in understanding before inhaling as he straightened, turning to eye the wall behind him. He paced, eyes roaming over the assortment of guns, and you took the time to look around. Never in your life did you imagine yourself in a place like this, but you were tired of being a sitting duck in someone else’s twisted games. You’d been through that once already…
“Here…”
You turned, eyes falling to the small gun in his hand as he neared the counter again. It was small enough to throw into your purse or hide in your car, whenever you got a license, and it looked easy enough to operate. It was perfect.
“I want this one,” you told him.
“Figured you would. It’s a Ruger LC9. It’s a 9mm caliber semi-automatic. Super simple to operate and will still get the job done,” he murmured.
He showed you how to load it, turning the magazine over and going over its features. You nodded as you followed along and grabbed your wallet without hesitation. He eyed you again as he took your cash.
“You talk to the police?”
“For what?” you wondered.
“For whatever’s got a girl like you buying a gun on a Monday morning,” he explained.
You sighed.
“Yeah, I’ve talked to them, but since no crime has been committed, there isn’t much they can do. I refuse to just sit around and wait for someone to hurt me. I’m done with that,” you told him.
He nodded and stuck his hand out.
“The name’s Clint. If you have any questions or…need to come back here, you know how to find me.”
You shook his hand and threw him a grateful smile.
“Thanks.”
The weapon felt so heavy in your purse, and even though the safety was on, you were careful in placing the bag in your car. The ride home was spent stewing over your thoughts. There was too much that you had to consider, and instead of spending the rest of the summer making lesson plans for when school started back, you were worrying about some stranger stalking your house at night.
Here you were doing the cops’ job for them.
That thought drew your mind to Officer Rogers, and you clenched your jaw. There was a time when you gave people the benefit of the doubt, but after your marriage, you couldn’t afford to do that anymore. How glad you were to be wary of the blond cop from the beginning.
His behavior had officially crossed questionable and dove straight into terrifying. You feared to imagine what would have happened had you accepted his proposal for dinner. You didn’t understand his behavior…not one bit. Was he punishing you for turning him down? Surely, that couldn’t be it. It seemed so…silly. Childish even.
Wanda had stated that just about every woman in town had been trying to lock down the man since he moved here. You could believe it. You’d have to be hard of seeing to deny how attractive he was, and coupled with his profession, you could definitely see why he was popular with the women in town. He was a seemingly kind man with the face of an angel, sworn to protect those in need. He was like something out of a cheesy romance novel.
You knew better though.
You’d been on the receiving end of his gaslighting tactics, his nicely veiled threats, and his wandering hands. The real kicker about his behavior though, was that he hadn’t done anything concrete enough to go to anyone with. None of what he did was objectively outright enough to report him with. Wanda had already asked you if you’d misunderstood his quip about your past abuse. You could just imagine anyone else’s face when you told them of how he brushed your waist and held your hand. ‘Oh, the horror!’ they’d say.
You hid your gun in your nightstand as soon as you got inside of your house. You hoped that you wouldn’t have to use it. You’d never been the type to resort to violence, but your ex-husband had changed all of that. If the cops wouldn’t do their job and protect you, without an incentive, then you’d do it yourself.
Hours later, you did just that.
You were half asleep anyway, having been going in and out of consciousness all night. The noise had come from the front of your yard this time, and you peeled your eyes open, slowly blinking as you heard it again. You had swiftly flicked the switch on your lamp and slipped your hand into your drawer to grab the weapon you’d bought.
You licked your lips, slowly sitting up. You looked down, making sure that the safety was off just before exiting your room. It was quiet outside as you quietly crept downstairs. You felt silly, standing in your living room in your oversized t-shirt, both hands on this toy-sized gun. You glanced at all of the windows, and when you didn’t see anything, you crept into the kitchen.
The silence made you nervous because you knew he was still out there. You turned towards the window and didn’t see anyone through the curtain. You weren’t convinced though, and you remained still. Sure enough, a bulky silhouette came into view as they glided past the kitchen. With wide eyes, you raised your arms, the gunshot making your ears ring as glass shattered.
You watched as he clutched his arm before taking off, a deep grunt traveling through the broken window. Hurriedly, you ran after him, throwing the door open before sprinting outside. Your yard was empty, and you had your gun raised before you as you paced the yard, spinning around. It was quiet…empty of anyone else it seemed.
They were gone, but fortunately, you knew that you’d hit them. You were just about to lower your weapon when you had a thought. With wide eyes, you ran back into the house. You were quick in grabbing your phone from upstairs before sprinting back outside. You turned the flashlight on as you neared the grass just below your window.
There, before you, were a few spots of blood, and hope bloomed in your chest. You let out a chuckle, feeling confident for the first time in a while. You put the safety back on the gun and laid it on the kitchen counter as soon as you were back inside. You grabbed a paper towel, stepping back out into the cool night air. You were wiping up the blood with the napkin when red and blue flashes suddenly filled your vision.
You stood and turned, watching as a police cruiser parked along your curb. The cop who stepped out was familiar to you, but it wasn’t the last person you wanted to see. Bucky strode across your yard to approach you, a less than enthusiastic look on his face.
“We got a call about gunshots. They listed your residence as the source,” he said as soon as he was close enough.
Your lips parted, and you glanced away. The blue-eyed man sighed at that.
“Ms. Y/L/N,” he admonished.
“What other choice did I have? None of you can do anything until I get hurt, and why would I wait around for that? The state doesn’t require a license to keep one on my property. It was self-defense,” you defended.
He frowned at that, running his eyes over you, alarmed.
“What was self-defense?” he slowly questioned.
You shoved the napkin at him, and his eyes widened.
“I shot him…Officer Barnes. I know I did! I got him in the arm, and now you have his blood, his DNA! You can test it, see if there’s a match in the system-.”
“Woah, woah, woah,” he said, attempting to calm you down.
You hadn’t realized that you were talking so fast, and you apologized.
“Here,” you said, turning to walk into your house.
He followed you, watching as you put the bloody napkin into a Ziplock bag before handing it to him. He gingerly took it, eyeing it before heaving a sigh.
“Well…the evidence is pretty damning. We’ll test it as soon as possible,” he eventually said.
Sighing in relief, you nodded. You watched as he leaned against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest as he studied you. There was a twinkle in his blue eyes, and it struck you how much like Steve’s they were.
“Ms. Y/L/N…is there anyone who’d want to hurt you? Anyone at all?”
You opened your mouth to reply in the negative when you suddenly froze. Familiar blond hair and blue eyes came to mind, and you blinked, a realization falling over you.
“Killian,” you murmured as if just remembering him.
“Sorry?”
You shook your head, eyes meeting Bucky’s again.
“M-my ex-husband. He’s the only one I can think of…”
“I assume it ended badly?”
“That’s an understatement,” you scoffed. “He was advised by his lawyers to go through with the divorce when I filed. It wasn’t his choice, at all, but it was in his best interest.”
The other man simply stared at you.
“He wasn’t…a good man. Not at all. I wish I could say all of it was verbal and psychological, but I had no choice but to come clean when I landed in the hospital. It wasn’t looking good for him and refusing to go through with the divorce would make him look worse,” you explained.
Bucky sharply inhaled, nodding.
“I see…”
“I…can’t believe that I’d never considered him before. He has money, but I’d never thought he’d find me so quickly,” you murmured.
Bucky made his way to the door, and you followed.
“I’ll get this down to the station. You be careful with that gun,” he advised, and you nodded. “Have a good night.”
And for the first time in weeks, you did.
Tumblr media
“You look well rested,” Wanda complimented, bringing your plate to you.
You returned her smile with a genuine one of your own.
“I feel well rested. Hopeful, actually,” you replied.
“That’s good! So I take it things are a lot better at your place, now?”
“They will be,” you cheerily said, digging into your food.
“I’m glad to hear it, and what great timing too. It seems like Steve might be out of commission for a few days,” she told you. “So, it won’t be him responding to any 911 calls.”
You blinked up at her. You couldn’t care less about the blond cop in any way, and the information actually filled you with relief, but your curiosity got the better of you.
“Why?”
“He was shot,” was her simple response.
However, it made you feel anything but simple. You almost dropped your fork as you eyed her, brows furrowing as your heart dropped to your stomach.
“…what?”
“Yeah, in the arm…”
It felt like someone took a knife to your chest.
“…the word is that he was involved in a hunting accident.”
You forced yourself to swallow, mind whirling.
“When?”
She hummed, thinking.
“The day before yesterday, I believe,” she answered.
You wanted to be relieved at that, that it wasn’t last night, but…it all seemed too coincidental. No…there was no way. The thought alone made you want to be sick.
“How…awful,” you whispered.
“I know,” she pouted. “I’m baking him a cake tonight. Figured I’d head up to his house to deliver it to him.”
You pressed your lips together, trying, and failing, to talk yourself out of what you were about to do. You knew that you were paranoid, you’d never deny that, but you owed it to yourself. If only to quell your fears. You had to see…
“Uh…when are you heading over?”
“Probably in the morning,” she said just before welcoming some customers in.
“Can I come with? I’d like to check in on him too…”
She looked at you with a sly smile, and you grimaced.
“Growing on you, is he?”
“Hardly,” you scoffed. “It’s just… He’s always entertaining my concerns, responding to every call I’ve made. I feel like the least I can do is check on him, you know?”
She nodded, buying your lie.
“That’s really sweet of you. I’ll swing by your house around 8,” she said. “He lives pretty far out, so it’ll take about 45 minutes to get there.”
You nodded, and she left to go deal with some customers.
You swallowed, appetite lost, and you pushed your plate away. Your paranoia was really getting the best of you because a part of you actually believed that the person you shot last night was Officer Rogers. It was the most outlandish thing to think. The man was an officer of the law, and even though he proved that he didn’t deserve that title, there was a pretty big gap in between some creepy touches and a full-blown stalker.
You knew how it would sound if you voiced your fears to Wanda. People hunted around here all the time, hunting cabins forever common. It was perfectly believable, but…it seemed too coincidental. Besides, you figured there was no harm in seeing for yourself just to put your fears to rest. However, a small voice in your head wondered what you would do if you didn’t put them to rest at all, but only increased them?
What if you only confirmed your suspicions?
This plagued you all throughout the night and well into the morning when Wanda pulled into your yard. You locked up your house and hurried to her car, goosebumps rising on your flesh from the cool early morning air.
“So how far does he live?” you asked as soon as you were in the car.
“Do you remember where Dr. Banner lived before he left town?”
You nodded.
“Past that,” she replied, and you blinked.
“Why so far out?” you wondered.
“Steve likes his privacy. Plus, he’s really a nature kind of guy. Homebody too. I know our town is no New York, but even it gets a bit too much for him sometimes,” she explained.
“Being secluded in a big house with Steve Rogers, out in the woods, sounds like something most women would be interested in. He definitely strikes me as the type to want kids and the whole nine, so why hasn’t he ever taken any offers? You said it yourself that he’s had plenty…”
You were beginning to realize that you didn’t know much about this man, at all. It seemed strange that someone like him hadn’t dated anyone in 6 years. You already knew that there was definitely something wrong with him, but could there be more? Like making you feel unsafe in your own home more?
“I don’t know,” she hummed. “He did have a short thing with Peggy when he first got here-.”
“Peggy? I could see that,” you said to yourself, wondering what had happened.
Wanda answered your unspoken question.
“Yeah, it didn’t last very long though,” she sighed. “She left as soon as it ended. I never did find out what happened exactly, but she was just gone one day. House emptied of everything, and her car was gone. I guess it ended pretty badly. Steve never talks about it.”
You frowned at that. You’d known Peggy growing up, and that didn’t seem like her. Unlike you, she was never the type to just take off. But so many years had passed. Steve came to town about 4 years after you left, and a lot could happen in 4 years. People could change, and you supposed that’s what had happened.
The rest of the car ride was filled with idle talk about things that had happened in the years. Wanda told you about her boyfriend, Vis. He’d move here about two years ago, and he apparently made her very happy. She’d been lonely ever since her brother Pietro had moved away not long after you did, and Vis apparently made her smile more.
Eventually the topic somehow came back to Steve...and Bucky and Sam.
“His name is James, but everyone calls him Bucky. Him and Sam were roommates in college and just remained that way ever since. They both moved down here about…4 years ago? They’re all like 3 peas in a pod, like brothers…”
Sam was Officer Wilson. You’d seen him in passing a few times, usually with Bucky. He seemed nice enough.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if one, or both, of them was up here already,” she said, taking a left into the trees.
The driveway was paved and long, curving every which way before it eventually straightened out. You realized that the car was going up an incline, and thick trees surrounded you on both sides. When Wanda said that he liked his privacy, she wasn’t exaggerating. The seclusion of it all could be considered peaceful if you ignored who lived here.
She pulled up in front of a nice two-story house, the light blue paint standing out amongst the dark trees. You had the small cake in one hand while you closed the car door with the other. You admired the scenery as you followed her. It was beautiful, there was no denying that, but the battered woman in you couldn’t help but to think how easy it would be to get away with anything. If you screamed, nobody would hear you.
You followed her around the side of the house towards the back deck, and with a start, you realized that the hill that the house sat on led down to a rather large lake. Fog hovered over the water in the early morning, and your lips parted at the sight, eyes running over the thick trees on the other side.
“Pretty, isn’t it?”
“Yeah,” you murmured.
“He had it built before he officially moved down here. I don’t blame him for spending all of his free time at home. Who’d want to leave this?”
She knocked on the backdoor, and your nerves spiked as you realized that you would soon be coming face to face with the erasure of your fears…or something that would only worsen them. It took a few minutes before you heard him approaching the door. A greeting was already on his lips when he opened it, but it died when his eyes landed on you.
“Wanda…and Ms. Y/L/N. Come on in,” he greeted, stepping back.
“Hey, Steve. I wanted to bring that cake by before I had to go to work,” she said with a smile.
You followed her inside and shuddered when your shoulder grazed Steve’s chest.
“Y/N wanted to check on you too, make sure you’re alright,” Wanda added.
You looked at him with a small smile, noticing the long-sleeved shirt he had on.
“It’s the least I can do after responding to all of my calls,” you told him.
He returned the smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“I appreciate that,” he whispered. “You can just put it on the counter.”
He gestured to the kitchen, with his right arm you noted, and you followed his instruction. You could hear him and Wanda talking in the living room while you slid the plate on the granite countertop. You glanced around, noting how homey it looked. You weren’t sure why that surprised you.
“Rough night?” you heard Wanda ask him as soon as you reentered the living room
Your eyes followed as she gestured to the several empty beer cans on the tv stand. Steve chuckled, placing his right hand on his hip, the left hanging limply at his side.
“Hardly. Sam and Buck came by last night. We just got into a few beers, watching some game that was on,” he replied.
You licked your lips.
“How’s your arm? Wanda told me it was a hunting accident…”
His gaze met yours, and the corner of his lip quirked up into a small smirk. He gestured to his arm, his left one, and relief filled you as he spoke.
“Yeah, Sam and I got a little careless out there. It’s just a graze, but nothing to worry your pretty little head about,” he responded.
Wanda chuckled at that while you fought not to sneer. You were just thankful that you’d put your fears to bed. The man you’d shot last night, you’d gotten him in his right arm. Steve was injured in his left, and you allowed yourself to breathe now.
“Can I use your bathroom?” you suddenly asked him.
“Yeah, sure! Just down the hall there,” he told you, gesturing behind him.
You thanked him and walked past him, Wanda’s voice reaching your ears as she asked him something. You went for the first door on your right, hand on the handle, when you were startled by a presence.
You looked up as Steve placed his hand on the small of your back, eyes widening as he pushed you along. His fingers pressed into your waist, and you shrunk in on yourself, a frown covering your features at his close proximity.
“Not that one,” he quietly told you. “That’s the basement.”
Your eyes met his now, and you quickly looked away at the intensity there.
“This one’s the bathroom,” he continued, opening a door, and flicking on the light for you.
You murmured a quiet ‘thanks’, flinching when he squeezed your hip one last time before returning to the living room. Your jaw clenched. He may not have been a stalker, but he was still a creep.
Tumblr media
“I... I don’t understand. How long does it take to test some blood?”
The policewoman before you pursed her lips, arms resting on her desk.
“It can take up to a few days-.”
“Which it has been.”
“Yes, but the sample has to be sent to a lab, and we have to wait for the results,” she explained. “I understand your concern…”
“Do you?” you mumbled.
She chuckled, green eyes sparkling with mirth.
“I do. Why do you think I have the job I have anyway? I like being able to protect myself and other people,” she told you. “There was a time when I wasn’t able to…”
You sighed, glancing around the busy station. It was empty of a certain blond cop, and you were happy.
“I’m sorry. You’re right. You’re also a woman, so there’s no doubt that you definitely understand what I’m feeling. I just…I have to know who this person is. I don’t feel safe in my own house.”
“I know,” she replied. “Steve talks about you a lot.”
Your heart skipped a beat at that, face falling.
“…he does?”
She hummed.
“He wishes that he could do more,” she said. “He worries about you. Of course, with this blood sample, I imagine he’ll be doing a lot more worrying. This is proof that someone is out there every night, messing with you.”
“Do you think this will be enough to convince your boss to let someone stakeout my house?”
She mulled it over, humming.
“You know what? It might be. I’ll definitely bring it up,” she replied, and hope bloomed within you.
You fidgeted in your seat, worrying your lip, and she frowned.
“Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?” she asked.
Her tone of voice told you that she knew you did, so you figured it was best to just come right out and say it.
“If you are able to get someone to watch my house at night…can it not be Officer Rogers?”
Her frown deepened, and she ran her eyes over you. She leaned in, a red strand grazing the side of her face as she studied.
“Now why would you request that?”
You didn’t feel like you had a valid reason to give her, not one that she’d believe anyway. Steve was a town favorite, so you had to come up with something that would make her listen to you.
“You and Officer Rogers are friends, right? You care about him?”
“Of course,” she said, urging you to continue.
“I know that he worries about me, and that’s why I think someone else should be assigned to this. If it gets approved, of course. I just worry that lines may start to blur…”
She straightened up at that.
“How do you mean?”
You let out a soft sigh.
“He did ask me to dinner a while back, and seeing as I only recently got divorced, I refused. I’m just not ready, and I know that he understands and has no problem waiting, but…”
You chuckled.
“He’s just so sweet. I still feel so bad about it, and I don’t want to make this any harder on him. Until I’m ready, I don’t want to give him the wrong idea. I think it’d be best for everyone if an objective pair of eyes were on this. Especially for his sake…”
She hummed, nodding in understanding.
“No, Ms. Y/L/N, that’s perfectly reasonable. I’m glad to hear that Steve is finally trying to get back into the dating pool though,” she said, standing, and you followed her lead. “It took him long enough.”
You simply threw her a smile.
“Well, thank you for listening to me, and please, call me as soon as those lab results come back.”
“I will,” she promised.
Your shoulders felt lighter as you stepped out of the police station. Soon, you could find out who was tormenting you and they’d be locked up. In addition, you wouldn’t have to deal with Steve for a while…or ever again. You could finally breathe again. Soon you’d have nothing at all to deal with aside from lesson plans, and bratty kids were nothing in comparison to this.
As you neared your yard, you realized, with disappointment, that you would be eating your words. A sleek black car was parked on the curb, and it took a minute for you to realize that it belonged to Steve. You’d just seen him a few days ago, so you were unsure why he was paying you a visit. Apprehension filled you as you parked.
He was already out of his car and slowly making his way towards you when you stepped out of your own. You sent him a tense smile, standing beside your driver’s door as you eyed him.
“Ms. Y/L/N,” he greeted.
“Officer Rogers.”
“I came by to thank you for the cake,” he told you.
“Oh,” you said with a frown, shaking your head. “There’s no need. Wanda made it. I just carried it in the house.”
You brushed past him, nearing your house, and you could hear him following.
“Still. It was very thoughtful of you to come by and check on me. Especially considering the night you had before…”
You paused and turned to look at him, brows furrowed. He had one foot on your steps while you stood on the porch, neat blond hair pushed away from his face.
“…sorry?”
“Bucky. He told me about what happened,” he explained.
“Ah,” you softly said.
You shouldn’t have been surprised. Wanda did say they were like brothers, after all.
“I confess that’s partially why I’m here. I wanted to see how you were fairing. That must have been terrifying for you,” he admitted, blue eyes inquiring as they drank you in.
You glanced down.
“Yeah…it was, but…I didn’t have much of a choice,” you said, looking at him. “I know you all are just doing your job, and I suppose I can’t blame you for that, but… I couldn’t just sit around and wait for someone to hurt me.”
He hummed, eyeing you.
“So do you know who it is?”
You shook your head.
“No, but I did get some of his blood. I talked to Officer Romanoff today, and she said that the lab results should be in any day, now,” you repeated what she had told you.
He nodded, making his way onto your porch now, and you stumbled back.
“Look, if you need-.”
“Officer Rogers,” you boldly interrupted, giving him pause.
His blue eyes were focused entirely on you as you swallowed, determined to put an end to this.
“Um… I have something to say…”
He straightened up, crossing his arms over his chest as he stared you down, waiting for you to continue. Your tongue darted out to swipe over your bottom lip, and you took a deep breath.
“I’ve always tried to give people the benefit of the doubt. Always, but…since my ex-husband, I don’t think I can really afford to do that anymore. For my own sake…”
Steve’s eyes had darkened, and you fought to hold his gaze.
“Your behavior makes me uncomfortable…and I want to say that perhaps you aren’t aware of it, but I don’t believe that. I think you know how you make me feel.”
You watched as he looked down his nose at you, jaw clenching and eyes hard, and you forced yourself to continue.
“If I offended you…or hurt you when I turned you down, that wasn’t my intention. Believe me, that was the farthest thing from my mind, and I don’t appreciate you acting so inappropriately towards me for it.”
His chest heaved with his deep breath, and you watched the way his cheek poked out, probably from his tongue. Satisfied with yourself, you took a step back.
“That’s all I had to say,” you finished, turning to go inside.
“Ms. Y/L/N, wait,” he finally spoke, reaching for your arm.
“Officer Rogers, please! I-.”
Your words were cut off by his loud grunt, pain lacing his tone. You had reached out to push him away, not liking the way he’d grabbed you. You frowned, chest clenching, feeling like someone had dropped a bucket of ice water over you as you watched him clutch his arm…his right arm.
He had reached for your right arm with his right hand, and in retaliation, you’d turned and pushed your left hand against…his right arm. Realization hit you, and your eyes widened as you looked at him with different eyes. Eyes filled with a fear unlike any other you’d ever experienced.
You stumbled back, heart dropping into your stomach as his gaze finally met yours. He opened his mouth to speak, but you were already rushing inside, locking the door behind you just as his fist banged against it.
“No,” you whispered to yourself, shaking your head.
He didn’t knock again, and you moved to the side, watching his silhouette through the curtains. It was getting late, the setting sun casting shadows everywhere, and feeling like you were going to be sick, you noted that the shape looked awfully familiar. He just stood there for a painful amount of time before eventually taking a step back and leaving altogether.
You placed your hand on your couch, struggling to stand. It was no use. You collapsed to the floor on your knees, taking your table and lamp with you, the fragile décor shattering upon impact with the floor. You pressed your hand to your forehead, entire body trembling as you realized what your subconscious had always suspected.
Officer Steve Rogers was the one tormenting you every night.

Groceries
Pairing: Frankie ‘Catfish’ Morales/Reader
Word Count: 1,712
Warnings: mentions of PTSD, one mention of Tom, but this is mostly fluff.
Permanent Taglist: @phoenixhalliwell
Reader takes the boys grocery shopping. I’m sure that can’t go badly, right?
You grabbed your keys, swinging them around your finger and heading into the living room, where the boys were settled. “I’m headed out.”
Frankie looked up, putting his drink down. “Where to?”
“The grocery store,” you said. “If we’re hosting the game tomorrow, I’m gonna need more food.”
“I wanna go!” Ever the golden retriever, Benny hopped up, eagerly bounding to the door and practically vibrating by your side. Frankie, just as much a puppy as his best friend, followed suit, giving you his biggest pleading eyes, knowing full well those damn things were your kryptonite.
“Fine!” You said, opening the door. “Get in the car before I change my mind. Pope, Ironhead, you in?”
Both of your other boys were slower, getting into the car with more difficulty. Frankie, by your side in the passenger seat, smiled as you started the car. Santiago and Will, both in the middle, cracked their windows, allowing Benny, in the way back, to be hit with the fresh air and curb his motion sickness.
“I cannot believe you are all coming,” you grumbled, backing out of the driveway.
The drive was short, and before you knew it, Frankie and Benny were out of the car and fighting over who got to sit in the cart.
“My significant other is driving!” Frankie pointed out, gesturing to you, waiting with the cart.
“Okay?” Benny countered. “You sat in the cart last time!”
“Boys!” Both heads turned to you. “We need two carts anyway.”
Almost instantly, Frankie was getting into your cart, grinning. “I love you.”
“Yeah yeah.” You gave the rim of his hat a small push, so it dipped below his eyes. “I swear I’m engaged to a toddler.”
“Engaged?” Santiago said, stopping in his tracks. “Fish, you proposed?”
You held out your hand, showing off your engagement ring. “Yeah. Last week. Sorry we didn’t tell you. There was the game to plan for, and then my parents got super emotional about it, and then his family insisted on having a party, and it all slipped our minds.”
Benny smirked. “I knew.”
Will gasped. “You traitor! Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was coaching dear Fish through it!” Benny said. “He was a ball of nerves.”
“He dropped the ring,” you said, navigating the cart down the produce aisle and grabbing a thing of raspberries, tossing it to Frankie and moving to examine the pomegranates. “Twice.”
While the boys teased Frankie, you and Santiago browsed the produce, grabbing a few veggies and fruits. You tossed a bag of broccoli onto Frankie’s stomach, snapping him out of his conversation. “Hey, dorks. I haven’t got all night.”
Will gave Frankie’s shoulder a shove and pushed Benny’s cart down the next aisle. He helped Santiago pick beer, Benny shouting suggestions while you took Frankie to the bakery.
“I love you,” Frankie said happily as you put a pack of his favorite lofthouse cookies in the cart.
“Love you more,” you said, absently pushing the cart through the bakery and grabbing bagels. “Wanna look at those ridiculous cakes that are like, 90% frosting and food coloring?”
Frankie lit up. “I am marrying you for all the right reasons.”
You laughed, steering the cart towards the cakes. Frankie eagerly pointed to one that was, as you’d said, mostly brightly colored frosting. The baker, a younger girl with pink and blue hair, waved to you. “Getting ready for the game?”
“Yep!” You said. “I’ve got all the boys here with me. And speak of the devils,” you added, hearing the rest of your group join you.
The baker greeted the group. “Oh! Frankie, how’d the proposal go?”
Frankie grinned. “Well, I got a yes.”
“Congrats!”
“Okay how the hell did your grocery store baker know but not us?” Santiago demanded.
“She helped me make the perfect cupcake!” Frankie said.
You snorted. “The cupcake you dropped down my shirt?”
Yet again, the boys teased Frankie for his proposal mishaps while you rolled your eyes and looked over the premade pie crusts.
“Frankie! Boys! C’mon!” You shouted eventually. “I can’t be here until midnight.”
The boys followed you down a few more aisles, Santiago, somehow, proving to be the responsible one as he helped you fill out your grocery list. He put two boxes of crackers in Benny’s cart, looking at you. “Dairy next?”
“Snacks, then drinks, then cereal, then frozens, then meat, and then dairy,” you said, running over the list. “That’s just how the store is arranged.”
Santiago shrugged. “Works for me. To the snacks!”
The snack aisles were a very dangerous place. You were suddenly the only voice of reason as the boys eyed the chips.
“One bag of Doritos, and one bag of pretzels,” you bargained with Will. “Get the stupid honey ones Frankie’s addicted to.”
“Excuse you!” Frankie said, grabbing a box of granola bars and settling back down in the cart. “Those things are amazing.”
“I’m not saying they aren’t,” you agreed, reaching over Benny to grab dried fruit. “But you might be addicted to those damn things.”
Will put both bags in the cart. “Anything else?”
“Microwave popcorn,” you read off the list, nodding to Santiago as he walked off to grab it. “Two bags of M&Ms, one bag of black licorice twizzlers, one bag of jelly beans, and five Hershey’s bars.”
“The chocolate comes in packs of six,” Will said, beginning to grab the candy. “It’ll work, right?”
“Yep!” You said, using the back of Frankie’s head to cross things off your list. “Next aisle, before I get conned into buying anything stupid.”
“Can we get sour gummy worms?” Benny’s hesitant voice said from behind you.
You turned. “Why?”
Benny fiddled with the bag, an almost guilty look on his face. “They were Tom’s favorite.”
You sighed, melting a bit. “Of course Benny.”
Benny smiled, fidgeting with the bag as you ushered everyone into the drinks aisle.
“Frankie, hon, how are we on coffee?” You asked, examining the coffee and finding your brand.
“We need more!”
You stood, holding the coffee and putting it in the cart. “Can I trust you to grab me a box of ginger ale?”
Frankie nodded, climbing out of the cart. “You want the name brand, and not the, and I quote, shitty stuff, yeah?”
“You know me so well,” you said happily. “I’ll get your tea.” You grabbed two boxes of chamomile tea, which was the only stuff that helped Frankie sleep through the night. Tossing the boxes into Benny’s cart, you examined the aisle, trying to remember what else you needed. “Okay, I think we’re done here. If I forgot something, it’s on you to grab it,” you said to Will, who smiled and nodded.
The next aisle was simple. You left Benny, Will, and Santiago at the aisle’s entrance while you took Frankie down to grab his cereal. He reached up, not even bothering to get out of the cart as he grabbed a box of cereal.
“Frozens!” You announced, turning down the frozen food aisle. “Will, can you grab two frozen pizzas and a bag of meatballs? Pope, you’re on game snacks. Mozzarella sticks, pizza rolls, and taquitos. Benny! Stay there and look cute! Frankie, you’re on veggie duty.”
Your boys assembled, dutifully carrying out the tasks you’d set. Meanwhile, you tucked a few pints of ice cream in the cart, winking to Benny as he pointed to his favorite flavor.
When he returned, Frankie climbed back into the cart, setting the bags of frozen veggies beside him. “I got green beans, corn, and peas,” he said. “Did we need anything else?”
“Nope,” you said, resting your elbows on his shoulders. “What’s left on the list?”
Frankie scanned the paper. “Bread, bagels, meat, milk, yogurt, cheese, and butter.”
When you had all your boys back at your side, you kept moving, examining the meat selection the grocery store had. “Babe, how many pounds of ground beef do we have?”
“Uhh.” Frankie began counting off on his fingers while you smiled and grabbed a pack of bacon. “Four?”
“So not enough,” you decided, grabbing two more. You sent Santiago to grab chicken breasts, keeping Will and Benny with you as you looked over the sandwich meat. Eventually putting sliced turkey in the cart, you nodded to Santiago as he handed you the chicken.
“One more aisle, I promise,” you said, heading towards the dairy section. “Then we can go back home.”
You grabbed a carton of regular milk and a carton of lactose free milk, handing them both to Benny. Then came the cream cheese tub, the butter, the yogurt, the sliced cheese to go with the crackers, and you were finally swinging back through the bakery to grab bread and bagels before heading to the checkout.
After checking out, you herded the boys back to the car, loading everything into the trunk and making sure everyone was buckled in before slowly turning out of the parking lot.
“Did we have fun?” You asked the car, turning the radio down a notch so you could hear them.
“Yes,” all four of your passengers responded, each with varying levels of awareness.
It was a struggle to get the groceries in the house and put away. Benny was shot, passing out on the couch almost immediately upon re-entering the house. Everyone else did their best, but Will tapped out after hauling everything in, and Frankie and Santiago barely made it through the process of putting everything away.
“You got ice cream?” Frankie asked, holding one pint and staring at it. “God I fucking love you!”
You laughed, putting the cereal in its proper cupboard. “I love you too.”
Eventually, you were on the couch, Frankie by your side and the rest of your boys in various other places. You scratched absently through Frankie’s hair, flicking through movies until finally settling on a calming kids movie about dragons. Since his return from his final mission, Frankie hadn’t been too keen on action movies. Something about the explosions set him off.
“Babe?”
“Yes Frankie?”
Frankie looked up at you, eyes partially closed. “Thank you for taking us to the store. I don’t think Benny’s been grocery shopping since we got back.”
You smiled, kissing Frankie’s nose. “Anything for my boys.”

Boyfriend Headcanons [SFW]
Includes: Kyoutani Kentarou x fem! reader Tags: No beta we die like men, Fluff, slight Angst, Bad boy with a good heart x soft spoken angel, and reader insert. Synopsis: Your boyfriend is kyoutani kentarou. A/N: Im sorry if this sucks. I literally am dumb and just wrote this at idk what time. [Kyoutani Kentarou]
-Ah yes a delinquent's delicate heart
-Kyoutani is known throughout the students being apart of the school's most beloved volleyball team that is.
-Despite the team's beautiful reputation however his image for most is just as you'd imagine for someone who is called "Mad dog" and has that wicked grin on his face when he plays.
-You are known as a pretty soft spoken person with a pretty face. Pretty enough that you've been made to participate as a contestant in Ms. Aoba Johsai Pageant for the Cultural festival.
-One problem though, you have the biggest fear of crowds. You had been meaning to tell your classmates but their enthusiasm to fix that dress for you as well as your presentation during the creativity portion. With everyone pitching in and doing their best, how could you crush their hopes like that?
-Meanwhile Kyoutani had to stay behind that day. Polishing a few moves for the next game just around the corner. What a dork, not even allowing himself to rest on days meant for resting. It had been during the festival's peak when he finally decided to go out and buy himself a croquette at one of the stalls. Walking across a supposedly closed off staircase, he hears something.
-Everyone is looking for you. You excused yourself to just freshen up before the final rehearsal and onto the actual event when you never came back. You sit on top of a set of stairs where you can guarantee that they'll have a hard time finding you.
-You sigh and you know this is cowardly but- "Hey? Anyone up there?" A rough voice emits from the stairs below you. With the search for you going on, you panic and attempt to escape. Failing to get up in time, you lock eyes with someone's furious gaze. "Hey, be careful. Your skirt is stuck on the metal border..." he mumbles.
-Kyoutani Kentarou. Never thought that kyoutani kentarou would be in front of you, untangling a piece of metal from your dainty school skirt. All the while he tries his best to help you, all you think of is how scared you are that you no longer have a reason to stay cooped up here. Scared to finally face the crowd.
-"There...Huh? W-what's wrong you idiot?!" There is confusion, panic, and worry in his voice when he sees the tears roll off your face. It takes him a minute to find something on his person until he hands you something you didn't expect.
-A baby blue handkerchief with a white embroidery of his first name. You stare at him with tear coated eyes and it takes you a minute to finally sigh in relief. Letting it all out on him. Your anxiety, your fear, your guilt, and at the very end of your rambling he looks at your worried face. "D-...D-Don't look at anyone else then. Only look for me in the crowd, o-okay?:
-It took a while for everyone to get used to this strange relationship between the two of you but you wouldn't really care much about that. You grow to look for him in a room full of people as he grows to proudly glance at you before he makes a winning kill.
-As your boyfriend, kyoutani is very different than what people think. Of course he is protective of you and he is adamant about you going out when it gets late but he makes compromises for this. If he ever felt that there are moments that he cant protect you? He teaches you a few self defense movements. You're afraid of crowds? Listen to music while you're there or simply get on call with him if you can.
-Your first kiss ended up being hijacked by his senpais during lunch. You two were sitting in the empty gym when the momentum was perfect. If it wasn't for yahaba's voice while he barges through the gym doors...
-Dont worry though! Your first kiss happened soon when you first picked him up for practice and he picked you up as you excitedly told him about your great score on a test you worked hard on. Adrenaline flowing through you when you just kiss him in front of his team and all.
-He is hot headed. When you get mad at him and both of you aren't listening to each other, it sometimes results into tears. One thing I can guarantee is that both of you can be a bit more stubborn. Don't let the intimidating back, facing you, fool you though. In reality, he is already regretting continuing the fight in the first place.
-You face him and see troubled expression. He is full of pride but if setting that aside can heal pain like this then he would have set it aside a while ago.
-A sorry, a kiss, and a compromise. A respectable way to conclude fights.
-For dates, maybe the purr of his suzuki bike as he takes you to unexpected cafes around town. Your collective favourite so far being the one near the supplies store at the mountain's foot. A cafe you two settled in for long periods of time, either to do homework or to just laugh about the small details that people have on them when they pass the cafe's window.
-"That's a honda" "Nuh uh! That's a suzuki!" "Sure uh huh and I have a full head of long hair"
-Tarou has told you to not frequently engage in his club, not because he gets distracted or anything but because he knows just the amount of teasing that his senpais will do when you're there. Especially Oikawa-san. This warning did not stop you from going, to no one's surprise. Giving snacks to him or assisting the team in cleaning up, you wanted to be as involved with his life as he was involved with yours.
-Kyoutani would admit that he owed heaven for allowing you to meet him that day.
