The Secret Origin of Mrs. Nautilus / "If The Goo's Alight, It's Not Alright!"

Originally printed in TyrannoMax #25, October 1977.

Updated from this, details under the fold.

I already have mostly-unmodded versions of the images on the first version, but even those involved minor color fixes and cleanup of major flaws.

For a full comic page, though, I wanted passable consistency. The original colors had to be removed and converted into "inks", those inks then modified to keep clothing, hair length, and other features relatively consistent, areas outside the frame have to be drawn in, the image recolored, and then given aging and halftoning.

Each pic used a different prompt around the basic format of:

The captain offered me a cup of this still-warm milk. I couldn’t help showing my distaste for such a beverage. He assured me that this milk was excellent, no different from cow’s milk.

I sampled it and agreed. So this milk was a worthwhile reserve ration for us, because in the form of salt butter or cheese, it would provide a pleasant change of pace from our standard fare.

Nautilus thoughts and minor episode 10 reaction (Spoilers, obviously)

It was more than I ever hoped for

I adore that it really is an origin story for Nemo. He's different from who we know him to be because he's yet to become that man, but there are moments when we see him beginning.

I am so happy that Humility wasn't some useless British lady which was admittedly one of my biggest fears for the show. She has a brain and opinions and heart and is just lovely.

I know that they're setting Nemo and Humility up for their romance, which I am all for, but I gotta say Kai and Loti have won my heart right now. He is an adorable malewife and she is That Bitch.

I did not expect what they did to Aadesh. Had me on my toes the whole time because of it.

I feared for Archie's wellbeing the entire time, not gonna lie

Blaster is just adorable and I will hunt down Lord Prat - Oops, I mean Prit - if it's the last thing I do.

Creepy Crawley, you're gonna catch these hands.

What is up with Jiacomo? Where was he from? I know he was an asylum patient, but there's obviously more to it than that. Was it electroshock therapy? Even lobotomised, possibly? Either way, I loved him!

The fight scene in episode 9 was awesome. I loved seeing the Norse characters have their own little story arc, too.

hey! love your nemonnax stuff - I have gotten into the fandom recently so it’s a relief to see someone as obsessed with it as I am!! Also love you fanfics - they are so well-written and creative! I was wondering if you had any headcannons for nemonnax, nsfw or otherwise? thx and excited and to see more of this fandommm!

Oh my goodness thank you so much!!! Honestly the best thing to hear as a creator 🥺🥰 tkluts is a bright spot in my life rn so I'm so so glad I can bring some enjoyment to others too ❤️

Headcannons:

I (like a lot of people) kind of just ignore the Mysterious Island and don't see it as cannon (Sorry Mr Verne). SO ANYWAY I don't think Pierre instantly published the book; I headcannon that he had it as a 'to be published after my death' both because he wouldn't want to constantly have to talk about it (especially memories of Nemo), but also to protect Nemo and the crew.

I just feel like it is out of character for him to put them at risk, but he would still want it published at some point; so has it published when Nemo might, presumably, have passed.

Pierre took several letters/notes that Nemo had written him (dinner invitations, research notes, etc) during his stay on the Nautilus with him when they fled.

He keeps the letters in the draw of his bedside table, tied together with one of Nemo's hair ribbons he had taken to briefly use as a book mark but forgotten to give back.

Realised those were pretty angsty so here's some cuter ones too!:

Nemo loves Pierre's love of life, nature, learning, the world. He wishes he could still see things the way he does; it's one of the things he considers the most beautiful about Pierre.

Both love to set each other off on an info-dump session and then just sit and listen to the other. They one listening sits there with such a love struck expression (especially Pierre who has very little control over his expressions) that when people see them they're like 'good grief!'

Both aren't the best at looking after themselves, but both will try and get the other to look after themselves and make a point about it (in their own way) when they don't. They also don't see the hypocrisy in this.

Pierre is a tactile person. Logically, Nemo knows this but he still get jealous when Pierre is constantly touching Conseil and Ned - especially Ned because Nemo knows they had a thing on the Abraham Lincoln.

To be respectful Pierre, despite the constant instinct to after they've all settled into the Nautilus, does not initiate physical contact with Nemo. He doesn't realise that it drives Nemo insane. He often 'sulks' (he would never call it that) about it when he sees Pierre lean against Ned. Samir (his first mate and bestie) keeps telling him to initiate friendly contact or stop whining.

(Samir is as bigger supporter of Nemonnax as Ned is anti Nemonnax)

Tribute AMV for Dr. Underfang and Mrs. Natalie Nice/Nautilus.

From TyrannoMax and the Warriors of the Core, everyone's favorite Buzby-Spurlock animated series.

After all, who doesn't love a good bad guy, especially when they come in pairs?

Process/Tutorial Under the Fold.

This is, of course, a part of my TyrannoMax unreality project, with most of these video clips coming from vidu, taking advantage of their multi-entity consistency feature (more on that later). This is going to be part of a larger villain showcase video, but this section is going to be its own youtube short, so its an video on its own.

The animation here is intentionally less smooth than the original, as I'm going for a 1980s animated series look, and even in the well-animated episodes you were typically getting 12 FPS (animating 'on twos'), with 8 (on threes) being way more common. As I get access to better animation software to rework these (currently just fuddling along with PS) I'm going to start using this to my advantage by selectively dropping blurry intermediate frames.

I went with 12 since most of these clips are, in the meta-lore, from the opening couple of episodes and the opening credits, where most of the money for a series went back in the day.

Underfang's transformation sequence was my testing for several of my techniques for making larger TyrannoMax videos. Among those was selectively dropping some of the warped frames as I mentioned above, though for a few shots I had to wind up re-painting sections.

Multi-entity consistency can keep difficult dinosaur characters stable on their own, but it wasn't up to the task of keeping the time-temple accurate enough for my use, as you can see here with the all-t-rex- and-some-moving-statues, verses the multi-species effort I had planned:

The answer was simple, chroma-key.

Most of the Underfang transformation shots were done this way. The foot-stomp was too good to leave just because he sprouted some extra toes, so that was worth repainting a few frames of in post.

Vidu kind of over-did the texturing on a few shots (and magenta was a poor choice of key-color) so I had to go in and manually purple-ize the background frame by frame for the spin-shot.

This is on top of the normal cropping, scaling, color-correcting, etc that goes into any editing job of this type.

It's like I say: nearly all AI you see is edited, most of it curated, even the stuff that's awful and obvious (never forget: enragement is engagement)

Multi-Entity Consistency:

Vidu's big advantage is reference-to-video. For those who have been following the blog for awhile, R2V is sort of like Midjourney's --cref character reference feature. A lot of video AIs have start-end frame functionality, but being able to give the robot a model sheet and effectively have it run with it is a darn nice feature for narrative.

Unlike the current version of Midjourney's --cref feature, however, you can reference multiple concepts with multiple images.

It is super-helpful when you need to get multiple characters to interact, because without it, they tend to blend into each other conceptually.

I also use it to add locations, mainly to keep them looking appropriately background-painting rather than a 3d background or something that looks like a modded photo like a lot of modern animation does.

The potential here for using this tech as a force multiplier for small animation projects really shines through, and I really hope I'm just one of several attempting to use it for that purpose.

Music:

The song is "The Boys Have a Second Lead Pipe", one of my Suno creations. I was thinking of using Dinowave (Let's Dance To) but I'm saving that for a music video of live-action dinosovians.

Prompting:

You can tell by the screenshot above that my prompts have gotten... robust. Vidu's prompting system seems to understand things better when given tighter reigns (some AIs have the opposite effect), and takes information with time-codes semi-regularly, so my prompts are now more like:

Natalie is a hard worker in one of today's high-end scientific fields. Why, her boss wouldn't know where the test tubes were kept if not for her tireless efforts! Well, not quite tireless...

She's quite tired. Mrs. Nice has been burning the candle at both ends to impress the boss, and she's about to make a terrible mistake because of it.

This Time...

Episode 11 – THE SUPER STORE

We open on Grian walking in on Sam in the bathroom. Sam makes Grian wipe for him. I wouldn’t relate this but I’ve seen people mentioning it out of context and was confused, and thought others may have also been confused. So allow me to clear up the confusion. There was never any context to begin with.

Also, Taurtis was taken away in the night by “officers” for not having the proper visa, Señor Loro reports. He promptly leaves.

Oh also it’s the weekend apparently, so they don’t have school. Instead, Sam has scheduled a job interview for them. Which is good, since Sam just spent the last of their money on KitKats.

Sam also steals a teddy bear from the hotel gift shop.

They ask Igbar for directions to the superstore, because Igbar knows where everything is. He also gives them his umbrella.

They arrive at the superstore, where they and the only other non-manager employee, Jason, immediately antagonize each other.

They’re interviewed by the manager, Mr. Nautilus, and Sam overshares quite a bit. Luckily, Mr. Nautilus also has a dead girlfriend, so he and Sam have a point of commonality.

Also, Tokyo Soul takes place in That One Time 2027, according to the calendar on the wall.

Mr. Nautilus doesn’t like either of the boys, but the superstore is short staffed, so they’re hired anyway! They’re each given a key to the bathroom and a company credit card.

Episode 12 – I HATE JASON

Sam and Grian have changed into their work uniforms. Also, it seems that Jason and Mr. Nautilus were watching them change through the bathroom mirror, which is in fact just a window. Okay.

The principal is shopping at the superstore and Grian immediately tears back into him about his staff.

They try to sell the principal a watch. Jason steals their sale.

Books that are for sale at the superstore: Squid Erotica. The Normie’s Guide to Memes. Why Squids Can’t Be Trusted. History of Anime. If Microwaves Could Dream. How to Lick Feet: For Dummies. Theoretical Panty Physics. Encyclopedia of Aliens.

Apparently the squid erotica is a priceless heirloom belonging to Mr. Nautilus, and the boys weren’t supposed to sell it. They also have no idea how the cash register works. Jason continues to antagonize them by being more competent than they are.

Professor Geode is here. He now has a disconcertingly wide smile, and his face appears to be glitching, or possibly melting. He requires trash and human waste. Mr. Nautilus is not pleased that the boys let him into the staff bathroom.

Professor Geode requires human food. Jason swoops in to sell him a bike, assuring him that it’s perfectly edible, and he can in fact feed it to people.

Also, Jason can teleport maybe??

Episode 13 – KILL JASON!

Sam and Grian hide in the electronics section to come up with a plan to get Jason fired, but Jason teleports behind them, so they relocate to the bathroom. They still appear to be unaware of Jason and Mr. Nautilus watching them through the mirror-window.

Grian’s plan is to push over some shelves and make it look like Jason did it. Sam’s plan is to push the shelves onto Jason, and break his legs. Grian insists that they are NOT going to kill anyone in this town, but eventually says that breaking Jason’s legs might be “for the best”. They are then called to the manager’s office.

He just wants to chew them out for not being more like Jason, rather than for threatening to break Jason’s legs.

Jason is now wearing Grian’s head???? He’s pretending to be Grian’s reflection for some reason??

A customer wants something for “chop chop”. Sam tries to sell them a garden trowel. Jason shows up and sells them a giant anime sword. They want him to test it on Grian and Sam.

Grian and Sam are sent to clean the bathroom. They continue to discuss strategy.

Sam: "Do you want me to set him on fire?" Grian: "Um… I would, but I think that’s illegal."

Mr. Nautilus is now wearing Sam’s head?? I honestly can’t tell if they’re supposed to actually be acting as Sam and Grian’s reflections or what. What the hell is going on in the superstore.

Sam and Grian successfully sell some guy panties for 500 or 5000 dollars, I’m not sure what exactly the exchange rate is between dollars and gold bars retextured to look like 1000 yen bills.

……But then it turns out the guy is a known counterfeiter, whose money will explode if you try to use it.

They try to slip the fake money into Jason’s cash register, but Jason catches them, so they decide to just go with plan B, which is “bring him into the bathroom and waterboard him in the toilet”. This also fails, because he still has that giant anime sword. AND a katana.

Sam and Grian decide to quit.

Mr. Nautilus claims they signed a contract and he can get them deported. Sam and Grian tell him this is bullshit, and just make a run for it.

Sam shows Grian around their house, as this is the first time he’s been there. Sam assigns Grian the dingy basement.

The sushi from episode 1 is STILL on their table.

Traumatic Events:

Taurtis being deported is kind of glossed over because it’s probably just an excuse for why CC!Taurtis couldn’t film that day, but I would think that would count.
