Have you watched the idol?

I have. I watched the first episode the night it dropped out of morbid curiosity and it actually wasn't as bad as people were saying it was— at least in the first half. The pacing was a little slow, but I liked Lily Rose Depp and I liked the supporting cast. There was a few moments of Sam Levinson talking complaining directly into the camera but other than that some of the writing was kind of funny, which I could tell they were going for.

Then there was the second half. I'm sorry to Mr Weeknd but he has zero screen presence and zero charisma and zero sex appeal. The second half of the episode is kinda revolving around this guy and his supposed gravitas but I just do not buy it.

Something that I do kinda worry about regarding this show is all of the purity politics surrounding the show. Which is not to say that the show isn't deserving of criticism because it very much is but most of the criticism I've seen especially on twitter is that it's "depraved" and "nasty" and "basically pornography" when it very much isn't. It's honestly just really fucking boring, which honestly makes me wonder how people would respond if they ever witnessed sex on screen that was kinkier than wanting to be blindfolded while the Weeknd does the most cringe dirty talk in history. It honestly feels like Sam Levinson's own idea of depravity and provocation is just kinky sex in itself, and then the kinky sex is so tame and boring. What happened to the show of the summer, Sam?
