Larry was smitten with Marian from the very beginning. Bertha announced that she'd be holding a dinner and right away he asks if she'll be inviting Mrs. Van Rhijn (and therefore Marian).
He has heart eyes the entire episode.
Larry approaches her as soon as she arrives at the Russell dinner at the end of the episode.
I'm no social etiquette scholar, but I'm pretty sure Larry grabbing Marian's hand, just days after their first meeting, was a pretty forward move. Even at a dinner like that.

As for George and Bertha, even though Bertha is upset that Marian has to leave so quickly, George recognizes that Marian surely came without her aunt's permission. He reminds Bertha that her quarrel is with Mrs. Van Rhijn, not Marian herself. I think it's that act that leads to Bertha and Marian getting along so well in the future.

Take a break to rewatch the first season! While Bertha is initially upset when Marian has to leave the house party early, George reminds her that Marian most likely came without her aunt knowing. From there, Marian and Bertha spent a lot of time together and get a chance to bond at said events (like the cute moment at the opera where Marian compliments Bertha's fan ... only for Bertha to gift the ladies a fan of their own at her luncheon with McAllister!).
Really, between Marian's old society family and her (probable) status as Ada's heir, how is Bertha going to speak against that?
Besides, she'll have her hands full managing Gladys with the whole duke fiasco.

i'm trying to understand why there is this assumption that bertha will disapprove marian as her daughter in law. i know there's a lot of talk about larian being some kind of romeo and juliet, but even though bertha and agnes dispises each other, bertha never disliked marian actually it was quite the opposite. the only thing that could make bertha disaprove their union is that marian is peniless, but her position in society (coming from a old money family with a lot of conections) is more importan since larry is already rich (also marian is probably ada's heir now she isn't poor anymore). anyway to close this off carrie coon already said recently that bertha even admires marian sense of independency. so we don't know what will happen but until now there's no reason to think that bertha will be against their marrige

This. This is the scene I mentioned in a previous post.
This is when you know that Mrs. Blane sensed something between Marian and Larry and she took deliberate steps to separate them from one another that evening by pulling Larry into conversations with her own friends. But what was really telling was how she didn't even bother to greet Marian by her name, despite having already been introduced at the tennis match.
She greets Marian with an "Oh, it's you!" that is said in what is supposed to be a sweet tone but has a clear motive in belittling Marian by the tone itself and the fact that she didn’t even bother with using her name or even asking for Larry to reintroduce them. It's borderline manipulative and I wasn't a fan.

Mrs. Blane absolutely knew there was something between Larry and Marian when she first saw them together in Newport. It's why she was so possessive of Larry and drew him away from Marian to talk to her friends instead of his own.
I think the timing of Larry's relationship with Mrs. Blane is interesting because even if he showed interest in Marian in Season 1, he knew that she had her heart broken and wanted to give her that space.
Space that ultimately pushed him to Mrs. Blane.
I think Season 3 will be a time for young Larry to learn the true difference between infatuation, lust, and what a true love should be.

Good thing our dude is going to go into business with Larry Russell and will have such an easy life that he'll end up setting his alarm clock just for the fun of it. 🧡
i also know jack is tired of having to open the door for marian whenever she comes home early in the morning....like let that man rest

CARRIE COON IS FROM OHIO?!?
She went to a small private college in northeast Ohio?!? She's lived in the Pierogi Pocket. She'd know of the beauty of the Akron Zoo and the history that comes from Ohio being founded by so many revolutionaries.
I've never felt more connected to an actor.
That's it. We need an episode where the Russells travel to Cleveland, Ohio, just so Carrie can enjoy in the Gilded Age history of her home state.

Just found out Carrie Coon is not only from the same state as me, she went to college in my moms hometown. I’ve never been prouder to be an Ohioan tbh.

the gilded age season three renewal! this is how we stay winning! can't wait for a whole new eight episodes of tightly scripted drama including but not limited to: being sold to a duke by your mother like he's a member of one direction, putting your sister in her place by paying the salaries of all her servants thus rendering her powerless, some bullshit about a clock again for some reason, and peggy living her best life and becoming a new york times best selling author.
