Believe
A gift for @chaoskirin, never stop believing.
“I believe in Santa Claus
Like I believe in love
I believe in Santa Claus
And everything he does
There’s no question in my mind
That he does exist
Just like love I know he’s there
Waiting to be missed…”
A long long time ago, in the land of ice and snow, there was once an ivory-haired foundling left on the steps of a winsome little cottage in the center of an ever-wintery forest.
Why ever-wintery you may ask?
Well, it was a place where snowflakes never stopped falling, where rivers never broke apart into grue. A place where it could be Christmas Day all year round, everything imbued with a certain sort of magic.
That little cottage in the wood, made of strong sturdy arctic firs and draped with gossamer strings of icicles, the sort that almost looked like the trailing strings of fairy-lights and tinsel, to grace the pine boughs of a Christmas tree decades later… belonged to a family of tiny elves by the name of Kringle, toymakers by trade and a burgeoning family by choice.
They called their new baby boy, Nicholas.
The world would come to know him as Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus, and Kris Kringle.
But three wan boys with big dreams and empty pockets, would come to know him as John Richard Deacon, their Deaky.
-X-
Strangely enough THE Santa Claus, was rarely, if ever, at the North Pole (which on a map, was actually called Polaris).
He could usually be found fixing something in the apartment he shared with his bandmates, a wrench held between his teeth as he tinkered away. He had been building and inventing toys since he was in the cradle, so the process of creation was nothing new to him. Yet he would still be at a loss for words when Roger would trot over, as John was laying flat on his back, fixing their shitty fridge once again, and plopped down, straddling his stomach. (Which was not round and jiggly like a ‘bowl full of jelly’, thank you very much, modern culture. He was sort of chubby yeah, not gonna deny that. But dear lord, every caricature depicted him as some obese old man. It was almost enough to give him a body complex. Almost).
“Hey Deaky?”
Rog started with that annoyingly inquisitive tone of his and John merely grunted at the knee in his ribs.
“How did you learn to fix stuff like this?”
Because I was raised by toy-making Keebler elves in a magical winter-wonderland forest.
“Practice.”
Roger asked a lot of questions like that.
Most people liked to write him off as the dumb blonde of the band, (obviously there to do little more than pose and look pretty, while playing on his kit or laying on an album cover), but in practice, Rog was anything but.
“Hey Deaky?”
John hummed as Roger’s hand stilled from where it had been carving through his long pale ponytail, bushy as ever in the confines of it’s scrunchie.
“I’ve been meaning to ask, why is your hair all white? Are you albino?” Ever the biology major.
Magic, Roger.
“I dunno, I was born with it.”
Which wasn’t to say that Brian and Freddie didn’t ask difficult questions as well, but they were rarer events. Most of his quirks he could easily explain away to them. Like Fred when he shoved eight cookies into his mouth at once. The impatient boy was just lucky they were still soft out of the oven, or he probably would’ve choked to death and they’d be out a lead singer for the band.
As it stood, Freddie flopped over the arm of their couch’s nasty love-seat, hands folded over his mouth, making several guttural sounds better suited to a porno than a reaction to baked goods.
“Good, huh? Or are those just the sounds of despair?”
Freddie made a noise that sounded a bit like how Cookie Monster must have in the throes of passion.
“Funny, the way you go on, I’d always thought you could fit more in your mouth.”
He caught a faceful of moist towelettes for his insolence, but it was so worth it.
“How in the world did you learn to cook ambrosia, darling?” Freddie asked, once he could finally breathe again. John shook his head and tucked in his chin to hide the smile.
“Tante taught me.” Tante Kringle, his elf mother.
Fred’s brow had crinkled and his lips pursed in confusion. “Tante?”
Deaky did the washing up with a smile on his face. “Yes, it means Aunt in German. She and my uncles raised me.” Brushing a stray clump of snowy hair out of his eyes, just because it was white didn’t mean he could see through it. Freddie came up behind him to wrap his arms around his waist, pressing his curved seashell ear onto John’s back to hear him breathe.
“What happened, Deaky?”
Fred sounded so sad, but John merely tossed his hair aside (Freddie insisted that it stay long for their glam look) and pressed a little kiss to the crown of their singer’s head.
“My parents abandoned me on their doorstep as a baby.”
“They did what?!” Freddie sounded so bloody broken up about it that John had no idea what to say. It wasn’t a big deal anymore. He was raised by the most unbelievably loving elf family. (Part of him wished that the boys could meet them, you know, without freaking out).
“It’s alright, Fred. I never knew them and my family loves me very much.”
Freddie pouted, arms wrapped around John’s tummy. “Still.”
****
Roger snorted as he watched one of the many TV movies leading up to Christmas, “Hey, did you lot know that Santa’s got a pilot license?”
Freddie had laughed into his cornflakes, sitting cross-legged on the living room rug in his underwear. Brian didn’t look up from his textbook, or the leaning Tower of Pisa he’d constructed out of notes from each of his dozen classes, frantically studying for his next final. John nodded, of course he knew, it was his license. Thank you, American Assistant Secretary of Commerce.
“So Bri…” Roger trilled, rolling over until his blonde head was all up in Brian’s face, covering his frantically written notes, in a way that reeked of suicide. The fire in Bri’s eyes could have deforested the Congo.
“Do you believe in Santa Claus?”
“No. He doesn’t exist, he’s a social construct. It’s impossible. No one can go deliver gifts around the world in one night or go down a flue over and over, especially not a man that size. Suffice to say, reindeers can’t fly and could never carry that many presents. Now kindly bugger off, so I can study.”
Thank you, Mr. Analytical.
…Whatever happened to magic?
Sometimes he really wanted to pull A Year Without A Santa Claus and see what went down without him.
But then he’d remember his family, waiting up in the snowy hilltops for him and just how hard they worked for the joy of children each holiday season and he could never pull shit like that. Not when they relied on him so much.
Tante would pull him into her lap as a little thing and smooth out his hair with her dainty glass hands.
“Our boy, our Kris, our little Saint Nicholas.”
-X-
“I believe in Santa Claus
But there was a time
I thought I had grown to old
For such a childish rhyme
He became a dream to me
‘Til one Christmas night
Someone stood beside my bed
With a beard of white…”
-X-
As usual, Christmas Eve came far too soon and he was frantically packing up in the dead of night to get the show on the road.
Making sure his boys were safely tucked into dream-land before creeping out into the living room, dressed in a pair of obnoxiously red flannel pajamas, snow boots and a white parka the same shade as his hair (the suit would be waiting for him in the sleigh, along with the toys and everything else sent along by his ever-vigilant family). His cheeks were round-peach rosy even in the cold and tugged on a pair of fleece mittens with a practiced hand. He was just walking around the couch to grab his discarded polka-dotted scarf, when his foot connected with something worryingly plush and startling human.
Roger groaned as he sat up like Frankenstein’s monster, holding his stomach where John had inadvertently kicked him. “Hey Deaky, what’s the big idea?!”
John was at a loss. “I just saw you… you were asleep in bed…” He waved his hands around as if that would remedy the problem.
Rog just rolled his eyes, “Nah, that’s Fern. The girl I brought home last night.”
“…and you’re not asleep with her?”
Roger cringed as though John had suggested he drop Freddie’s hairdryer in the bathtub, while he was in it. “Well, you know Johnny Boy, when a man loves a woman, or a man loves a man, or a woman loves a woman, (let’s be inclusive here)… sometimes if they’re too close together they…” Cue several vulgar hand gestures. “I wasn’t sure if you lot wanted to hear that.”
“Yeah well, I didn’t. But now I can see it. Thanks for that.”
Roger grinned like a greedy kid on Christmas morning.
“No problem, Deaks!” Then his eyes narrowed in on John’s outfit and the small clutch of luggage in his keeping. “Where are you going?’
The young bassist blanched. “Oh, you know.” A vague hand gesture. “My family needs me to rush home for… reasons.” I have to go fly around in a red suit handing out presents to children. “I’ll be back soon, okay?”
He tried to grab everything he needed and make a beeline waddle for the door, but Roger was far too fast for him and basically galloped over, to wrap those skinny noodle arms tight around his waist, stopping him in his tracks. Fuck.
Instead of doing the sensible thing and asking him why he had to go, or if there was anything he could do to help, Roger screamed for Brian and Freddie at the top of his lungs. Yelling about how there was a Christmas emergency and John was trying to flee the country.
Thanks Rog, thanks a whole fucking lot.
Freddie hurled himself out of the bedroom, tinsel wrapped around his neck and candy-cane pasties on his nipples. It complimented the tight yellow star boxers down below that left nothing to the imagination, leftovers from their wild Christmas party the night before. “Wha’s going on? Deaky’s going on the lam? Who did we kill?”
John’s will to live.
“The last of my sanity.” Brian groaned, scrubbing a hand through his half-flattened curls. “What is going on?”
Roger instantly let go and pointed the finger at John, like they were still in primary school and he’d stolen Rog’s Hello Kitty eraser. “Deaky’s trying to run off and join the circus!”
“No, I’m not!” He was about to rip out chunks of his own hair though. “I just have to go home for a few days…” Nope, I’ve got to go be Santa.
Freddie was aghast. “But Deaky, you’ll miss Christmas! I thought we were going to celebrate together.” He looked so sad about it. Dramatic Queens, the lot of them.
John pinched the bridge of his nose. About to launch a long winded apology and partial explanation. Until he got distracted by Roger, who was running about and gathering up all his shit like some sort of small opinionated human tornado.
“Rog, what are you doing?”
“Packing!” The drummer squeaked, squishing himself between the love-seat and the pull-out couch to dig up his other sock. “We’re coming with you!”
Roggie, you can’t just…
The familiar symphony of hooves touching down on the roof, dislodging more than a fair bit of snow, sounded high above their heads and John contemplated using his wintery magic to knock the boys unconscious. Alas, Bri just crinkled his nose.
“What on earth was that?”
John grimaced. “My ride.”
-X-
When he got up to the roof, Donner was all up in his face with that wet nose of hers, the others not far behind her. His loyal reindeer queen. His fuzzy baby girls that he’d raised from the very moment that they’d tumbled out into his arms. They knew his scent, the funny choked-off laugh mimicked by all around the world, they loved him. (Yes, his sleigh ran on fierce girl power. Male reindeer didn’t have antlers this deep in the wintertime).
He trudged through the surprisingly thick snow to be able to reach out to all of them at once.
The boys were openly staring behind him. Keeping a wide berth, but ah hell, what did John have to lose? Might as well give regal disaster Freddie the time of his life. John took the shy singer by the hand and led the scrawny boy towards the rarely skittish creatures.
“Hold your hand out palm up, so they can sniff you.”
Freddie was adorably incredulous, whispering over and over under his breath. “I’m being sniffed by a caribou. I’m being sniffed by a caribou. This is the best day of my life. I’m being sniffed by a caribou.”
Brian cleared his throat, eyes unblinking as he worried at his bottom lip absently. “John. Why are there caribou on our roof?”
“They’re uh… reindeer… That’s the term they prefer.”
Bri nodded, waiting a suitable amount of time before. “Right. John. Why are there reindeer on our roof?”
“They’re my ride.” He sounded sheepish as could be, drawing a hand through his ever-mussed ivory hair, pretty sure that Brian was inches away from pulling a Santa Clause and shoving him off the roof to die.
“Your ride home is… in a sleigh drawn by reindeer? Were the red-eye all booked up?” Disbelief written across his soft features, plain as day.
“Uh no. You um… caught me red-handed. I actually have to make some deliveries first.”
The toy bag was resting in the back. It was magic, you see, the correct toys wouldn’t appear in his sack until he had reached the intended home. The children sleeping softly in their beds, eager for what the next day would bring.
“You have to make deliveries in a sleigh drawn by reindeer on Christmas Eve?” Brian rolled his eyes skyward, those bony arms crossed to hide the way they trembled. “I think I know this story. Isn’t that Santa Claus’ job?”
John shifted side to side, clearly uneasily. “Well, yeah. Though can you really count it as a job when I’ve never gotten paid?”
Bri looked more frozen than the ice freezing on the edges of his curls. “Excuse me, what?”
“You heard me, Bri.”
“Um, no. I didn’t hear you, because Santa Claus doesn’t exist.” And this was the man who thought he was so much better than those who called Galileo crazy, for suggesting that the world didn’t revolve around the earth? Wow. Irony.
John rolled his eyes, because this was going nowhere and he didn’t have any time to lose.
“Look, believe whatever you want. But I don’t have time for this. Take Freddie and Rog and go back inside. I’ll be home in a few hours.”
He moved to climb into the sleigh and change clothes. But not before seeing an eager Roger sitting in the front seat, beaming from ear-to-ear and practically bouncing where he sat. “Oh fuck that, come on boys! Let’s go save Christmas!” The drummer crowed, arms spread as wide as could be.
“Rog, Christmas isn’t in danger.”
“It will be if you don’t get a move on, Santa Baby.” A finger reached out to poke at his soft middle and John blushed all the way up to his ears, as Roger began to hum the opening lines of the song.
“Fuck you.” Honestly, he didn’t mind and could give a shit. (At least it wasn’t Little Drummer Boy, for the thousandth time).
“Aw, don’t be shy, Johnny! It’s cute!” Roger squirreled his arms around John again, who rolled his eyes before hugging back, loathly.
“Rog, you are so on the naughty list, for life.” Enjoy coal, bitch. (Okay, so maybe he cared a just little bit).
“Let’s save Christmas!” The naughty blonde simply crowed, throwing out his arms like he was preparing for some sort of grand entrance at a ball (as the princess).
John pouted as he moved to check all the rigging, he wasn’t taking them with him. He wasn’t.
Spoiler alert: He took them with him.
-X-
‘“So you’re too old for Santa Claus”?
He said with a smile
“Then you’re too old for all the things
That make a life worthwhile…
For what is happiness, but dreams
And do they all come true
Look at me and tell me, son
What is real to you?”’
-X-
He cracked the reins to get them soaring into the air, even though the girls knew exactly what they were doing.
His boys seemed the opposite, a complete motley of emotions. Brian was scowling like a sullen little boy, and holding onto the edges of his seat for dear life. Roger was still bouncing around like a little kid on a sugar high, so no change there. And Freddie was trying to avoid looking down.
“Fred, you okay?”
Soft swallow, “I’m not much of a heights fan, dear.”
“HA! Deer!” Yes, Roger was most certainly still drunk from drinking his body weight in spiked eggnog earlier. Or maybe that was just Roger. John unceremoniously reached over and dropped the reins in Freddie’s hands.
“Drive the sleigh for a minute, yeah? I’ve got to get dressed.” He ordered absently, as he climbed into the back to change into the proper attire. The response from the boys was immediate, Roger froze and stared over at Freddie with unspeakable horror. Freddie himself clutched onto the reins with trembling hands and Brian was flabbergasted, as usual.
“Freddie can’t even drive a car, Deaky!”
“Oh we’re gonna die… we’re gonna die!” Roger moaned from the back and Freddie whipped around with a venomous scowl on his face.
“Thank you so much, darlings, for the vote of confidence!”
John tucked his discarded parka around Freddie’s narrow shoulders. “It has to be him. Nobody else has the song power needed to keep this thing up.”
Roger snorted into his hand. “Fred’s good at keeping stuff up.” Fear momentarily forgotten.
Brian eyes were practically suspicious slits, “Song power? Is that a thing?”
Freddie looked like a mix between nervous and intrigued. “Do we have to sing Christmas carols to stay in the air?”
Nope.
“Definitely.”
He dressed in the back as quickly as he could, fortunate enough that his warm suit was tucked safely amongst the floorboards. He hastily handed off pieces of his clothing to whoever looked the coldest, as he was serenaded by the worst Christmas carolers he had ever heard in his life. If the sleigh really did run on song power, oh they would have been dead long ago.
Roger wolf-whistled as he climbed into the front in full-regalia. “Looking good, Deaky!”
John flushed all the way up to his ears and Freddie frantically passed the reins back. A few of the reindeer tossed their heads and gave him scathing looks for being under-siege by such an unexperienced driver.
“You aren’t singing.” Brian deadpanned.
“I don’t have to, I’m Santa.”
-X-
Once they’d hit all the bloody homes in Britain, Brian was sitting there blinking in shock. “How in the world…? It’s been minutes!” (What could he say? He’d had a slow start). Bri’s stubbly jaw was half-hanging open like a shutter door somebody had forgotten to close.
“Stand up, Bri.”
They were flying through the air faster than the speed of light, the ocean swirling, curling and sloshing beneath them. Brian looked at him like he’d just suggested jumping into it.
“Stand up!”
Brian rolled his eyes and did as requested, so John dropped the reins into Freddie’s hands again, as he pulled Bri over to the edge of the sleigh. They were flying at a height that turned the clouds into cotton-candy and brought the stars ever closer. He tightened his arm around Bri’s tiny waist to support him, watching as those dark eyes filled with wonder once more. A wide, childlike wonder. Mirroring the face of a little boy who had once believed in magic.
Brian May, Hampton. He’d asked for space-related paraphernalia every year for Christmas during his childhood. The one year he’d asked for a bike instead, John had personally attached planetary stickers and streamers to the handlebars.
Bri, when did you stop believing?
His hands reached out to touch the stars.
“Hey, Bri, do you know what they see when they look up at us?”
Those doe eyes were enormous as he shook his curly head. When did you stop seeing the magic in the stars?
“What?” A little smile playing in the corners of his mouth.
“A shooting star… Make a wish.”
That lovely smile took full center-stage again, a man who believed again, in something more.
Merry Christmas, Brimi.
-X-
“Just believe in Santa Claus
Like you believe in love
Just believe in Santa Claus
And everything he does…
Wipe that question from your mind
Yes, he does exist!”
-X-
They flew around the world in a matter of hours.
Even when Freddie begged to be left in Japan (they’d had to bodily put him back into the sleigh, “Just leave me here to enjoy my life!” Fighting for freedom with all his might). Roger was groaning with a sore distended belly from eating all the bloody Christmas cookies that John had shoved in his direction. (“What the hell? Why did you eat them all?!” Roger pulled his big pouty face. “You said they would be upset if you didn’t!” John rolled his eyes skyward before ordering that if Rog had to puke, he more certainly wasn’t doing it in the sleigh. Magic could only go so far.)
And Brian was looking around like he was seeing the world with new eyes.
John made sure he dragged each of them down the chimney at least once, to give them the full-experience of laying down the presents and experiencing the whole shebang.
Their only issue occurred in America. Where they hadn’t noticed a little girl in a fuzzy green nightie asleep on the couch overlooking the tree. She had sat up with a stuffed snake cradled in her lap.
“Santa?”
All four of them had frozen. (Why he’d thought it was smart to bring all of them at the same time was another matter entirely). John had turned though, with a practiced smile on his face, it wasn’t the first time he’d been caught by a pair of curious little eyes.
“Hello, love. You should be asleep.”
She had rubbed at her eyes with a tired little smile.
“Sorry, Santa.”
“It’s alright, little one. I’m sorry we woke you up, my friends are helping me deliver gifts tonight,” He looked around with mock-furtiveness and spoke in a stage-whisper. “They’re a little new at this.”
John gently tucked her in on the couch. “Merry Christmas, Aeryn.” She smiled that child’s gummy grin and pressed her stuffed snake ever closer.
“Merry Christmas, Santa.”
But nothing was better than looking in the backseat of his sleigh, the one that had seen many lonely Christmases in his time, and seeing all his rough-and-tumble boys curled up together instead of empty space.
Brian’s head pillowed on Freddie’s shoulder. Rog curled up across both their laps. Freddie flopped over like a deflated bouncy castle.
For a moment he wondered if being Santa meant giving himself the best Christmas present as well, for when he looked at the boys he’d miraculously accrued… perhaps he already had.
The sleigh touched down in the center of the small elfin village that he’d helped to build so long ago, all of the icy grandeur patterned around that tiny cottage in the ever-wintery wood. The house that had served as his school, his workshop and his home beyond all else.
He hurled himself out of his uncomfortable wooden seat (they really needed to invest in better padding) to careen over to that same little cottage and the old elfin queen who waited for him there. Tante Kringle opened up her arms and he bent in two to hold her close, even as his knees grew damp and icy cold from the snow beneath them. He couldn’t help the sob that escaped his chapped lips.
“Oh how I’ve missed you my little Saint Nicholas.”
“I’ve missed you too, Tante.”
She pressed a familiar kiss against his forehead, tracing the path of a snowflake. “Did you have a lovely Christmas?”
“The best I’ve had in a very long time.”
Her hands crested on her rounded hips and she tsked in his direction. “And have you called your mother yet young man? You know she’s been waiting to speak to you for millennia.”
John groaned and rolled his eyes skyward. “Let her, I do have eternity, you know. And she abandoned me! She can wait.” He flashed her his token impish grin, only this one came with a forked snake tongue and slitted red eyes. His birth-mother’s calling cards.
Oh you didn’t know Krampus had birthed Santa Claus?
Well, that dears, is a story for another time.
-X-
John carried his limp sleepy boys inside, one by one, and gently tucked them in on their messy couch. Brushing his chapped lips across every forehead within reach. “Happy Christmas.” He whispered to each and every single one of them.
The boys who had ‘saved’ Christmas.
But he lingered a moment afterward, saying a little Christmas wish of his very own.
It doesn’t matter if you lot don’t believe in Santa Claus. That’s not something I would ever force anyone to do. But promise me, that you’ll believe in something. Anything. Even when everything is dark and there isn’t a Christmas light in sight? Believe. Believe in hope, believe in the future, believe in yourselves. That is all I want for each of you. That’s what I’m designed to teach. A belief in something incorporeal. Something beyond the limits of the possible.
Yet when they woke up hours later and fervently asked about how things had gone, had everything gotten delivered in time, oh god was John really Santa Claus? He had merely raised an eyebrow, sipping at his hot cocoa.
“Wow, you three certainly got plastered at that Christmas party last night. I wonder what was in that eggnog…” Smiling to himself with a knowing sort of look.
Already getting ready for next year.
-X-
“Just like love you knows he’s there

Colter - Old Friends (3)
Whole story masterlist here!
It was no surprise to Arthur that the knawing cold didn't seem to let up by morning. With a gruff sigh, he arose from his cot and fastened his gun belt around his waist, resisting the urge for a cigarette that he felt he desperately needed. He scratched his head before covering his unkempt hair with his weathered hat before opening a tin of biscuits and a can of peaches, quenching his hunger for at least a couple of hours.
He stretched before the old wooden floorboards creaked under his weight as he walked, seeing Dutch and Hosea gathered around the hearth as they discussed their plan.
"So what now, Dutch?" He heard Hosea question.
"We get strong. We get warm. And we wait. When the storm breaks, we need to move, but we're safe here." Dutch explained.
Arthur couldn't help but eavesdrop as he walked by on his way out of the cabin. He felt as if he needed the reassurance since he couldn't provide any type of explanation for himself. He shuttered his shoulders as he closed the cabin door behind him, welcoming himself to the morning wind as it felt to him as it was going to cut him in half.
"Javier," Arthur greeted as Javier was holding his post, a Carbine Repeater in hand.
"Arthur, how you doing?" Javier said through chattering teeth.
"Not freezing is good news," Arthur grunted as his palm rested on the doorknob. "What's he in there fussin' about?" He asked, referring to Micah.
Javier shrugged his shoulders, "Not sure, but he's probably upset because he has to share a room." He replied, sharing a chuckle with Arthur.
"Sure, the poor boy needs his privacy," Arthur snickered as he entered the cabin, greeted by the smell of bourbon and tobacco.
"-up with you boys, because I thought you liked action," Micah continued. "Couple of days on the lam and you lot have all turned yella!" He sneered as he handed the bottle of bourbon to Arthur as he found a seat for himself. "Apart from you, of course." He teased as he looked at his colored fellow gang member, Lenny Summers.
"Shut up, Micah!" Lenny hissed as he took a drag off of his well-needed cigarette. 'I didn't even smoke this much until I got stuck sharin' a cabin with this clown!' He thought.
"I ain't never seen so many long faces," Micah continued, not noticing Arthur glaring at him for his ignorance as he placed a log in the small hearth, presenting his gloved palms to the warmth, a slight jolt running through him as Javier slammed through the door, shaking the fresh snow from his coat.
"I guess... I guess folks miss them...that fell," Bill added, taking a needy drag from his cigarette.
"Well, when I fall, I don't want no fuss." Micah sneered.
Lenny snickered, "When you fall, there'll be a party!"
Bill laughed as Lenny playfully pat his shoulder as he looked over briefly at Arthur, who was bringing his freshly lit cigarette to his lips, letting the temptation take over as he couldn't go any longer without having one.
"A party...probably!" Bill repeated, snickering along with Lenny, not noting how Micah had stood to his feet to walk towards him.
"That funny, huh?" Micah said. "Sure," Bill replied before Micah delivered a blow to Bill's face before he could react, only to be stopped by Arthur and Lenny, who were both clenching their lips around their lit cigarettes as they forced Bill to sit back down.
"Maybe I don't feel like being laughed at by the likes of you two!" Micah sneered before shuttering as Dutch had now made his presence known.
"Stop it!" Dutch hissed. "Now! You fools punching each other when Colm O'Driscoll's need punching, hard. You wanna sit around waiting for him to come find us? All of you, we got work to do!" Dutch preached as Arthur made his way around him to go to his horse.
"Are you sure about this, Dutch?" Arthur asked as he rubbed his gloved hands together.
"Yes," Dutch replied sternly.
"Folks been through a lot recently...we hardly back on our feet yet," Arthur explained, exhaling a small cloud of smoke as he spoke.
"And the last thing we need is to be bushwacked by Colm O'Driscoll. Let's go." Dutch replied, guiding Arthur along with him to their horses.
"I know you hate him, Dutch,"
"He's here for us," He protested.
"I doubt that," Arthur shrugged.
"No, you're just doubting me,"
'Actin' just like a woman!' Arthur hissed to himself. "I would never doubt you, Dutch, you-you always said revenge is a luxury we can't afford."
"This is the right call, Arthur," Dutch insisted. "Take this," He demanded after he watched Arthur inspect the new repeater he had given him. "And this is about more than revenge for business long ago," He explained as he pulled a coil of rope from his horse before handing it to Arthur. "They were talkin' about trains and detonators. Colm always had good information."
"And you think now is the right time to hit a train?"
"Now you might fancy living on deer piss and rabbit shit...I'm getting too old for that life," Dutch teased as Arthur angrily flicked his cigarette into the snow. "Mr. Matthews, Mr. Smith, Mr. Pearson, would you please look after the place? There are O'Driscoll's about!" Dutch warned before leading his clan into the mountains.
───※ ·❆· ※───
"Alright, gentlemen, this is it!" Dutch said as he and the gang rode silently on the outskirts of their target's camp. "Are we goddamn ready?"
"Ready, Dutch!" Lenny, Bill, and Javier said almost in sync.
"Good. Now, Mister Morgan and I, we're going to head up here a little, see if we can't get a sense of the layout of the camp. Mister Williamson, Mister Bell, you two take up a hidden position just outside the camp. Mister Summers, Mister Escuella, you two hold position here. Let's go!" Dutch commanded before he and Arthur dismounted their horses and making their way up the hill to be perched on a ridge, getting a clear layout of Colm's camp.
"Perfect," Arthur mumbled as he pulled out his binoculars, scanning around the camp.
───※ ·❆· ※───
"Who's he talking to? He don't seem very happy." Dutch whispered as he and Arthur were analyzing the commotion below.
"No..." Arthur replied, keeping his binoculars set on Colm and the soul he had just slapped.
"Are they leaving?" Dutch asked as the unidentified man had climbed on his horse.
"Seem to be. Should we go get 'em?" Arthur asked.
"No. Colm can wait. Best to get some of them outta there," Dutch replied. "And much less fun to rob him and his score if he never finds out about it," Dutch and Arthur snickered. "Come on, let's get down there."
───※ ·❆· ※───
Kieran fumbled through his saddlebag on his horse, desperately trying to find the manuscript that was almost stolen from him by Minnie Barlow. Sweat beaded on his cold skin as he knew Colm was closeby, seeing that his solid black stallion was ground-tied a few yards away from him.
"Duffy!" Colm yelled. Kieran jolted as he immediately jogged to his leader.
"Why weren't you gonna tell me about runnin' into Miss Barlow?" Colm questioned with a sly grin on his lips.
"I-I was..." Kieran stuttered as he looked around. "I-I didn't let her get it, though. She almost shot me!" Kieran explained.
Colm chuckled, "You're damn lucky she didn't! And you'll be damn lucky if I don't shoot you right now for runnin' away when Dutch van der Linde is shootin' up my boys!" He hissed.
"I-I didn't run away!" Kieran protested.
"That's not what Phil's cousin said!" Colm argued as he slung his leg over his horse's back before lunging down and grabbing Kieran roughly by the collar, pulling him harshly into his horse's shoulder. "Said you were runnin' away. I'll tell you what: you get outta here and bring me Miss Barlow. I don't care how you do it, just do it," He hissed, his tobacco and whiskey tainted breath filling Kieran's nostrils.
"I'll die out there if I go now, please!" Kieran begged.
"I don't really care if you die or not, boy! Do it!" Colm demanded before slapping him and letting him go. "And don't you come back unless you got her!"
Kieran nodded as he ran to his horse, mounting quickly before digging his heels into the horse's sides, urging him to go as fast as he could. 'Just south-just find my way down south and I'll be fine!' Kieran assured himself as his adrenaline was causing his body to feel like it was taken over by static.
───※ ·❆· ※───
"Maybe I should take the lead on this one Dutch, they're gonna be gunnin' for ya once it starts," Arthur warned as he and Dutch trekked through the snow, clutching a weapon as they snuck through the outskirts of the camp.
"They haven't got me yet, but if you want, I'll wait on your call!" Dutch replied as they soon caught up to the others, who were behind one of the thin wooden walls that made up the perimeter of the camp.
"Hey! Anybody seen that new kid?" Arthur heard a fellow member ask from a nearby cabin.
"The one with the funny lookin' horse?" Another asked.
"Yeah!"
"Colm told him to bring back that Minnie Barlow if he wanted to come back!" A man answered.
"Minnie Barlow?" Dutch questioned as he looked back at Arthur. "She's around here?"
"I wouldn't think so..." Arthur replied, trying desperately to hide the sting of hurt that pinged through him. 'What the hell is wrong with me?' He scolded himself as he tried to subside the feeling, focusing on the task at hand.
"Ah, yeah, can't wait to see that pretty blonde fightin' 'round here!" He heard a man say.
He let himself snap.
He took his place in cover as he fired shots from his new repeater. Seven bullets at a time before it took two seconds to reload. The environment around him became slow and at his pace as he, Bill, Micah, Lenny, Javier, and Dutch shot down each O'Driscoll gang member one by one.
───※ ·❆· ※───
"Good work boys! Now, let's tear this place apart!" Dutch commanded as he mounted his horse. "Arthur, you take that building to the left!"
"Find those detonators, explosives, anything you can!"
Arthur nodded as he followed Dutch's directions, making his way to the desired building as told. He grinned as he approached the suspected explosives, recognizing the SAMSON BROS. SAINT DENIS DYNAMITE case, opening the weathered crate to see the prize possession.
"Here...this looks good...what do you think, Bill?" Arthur asked as he handed the former Army soldier the explosives.
"Looks fine...smells good." Bill snickered as he held the dynamite to his nose.
"Come on," Arthur said as Bill followed suit to join the rest on their horses.
"Did we get everything?" Dutch asked.
"Think so, Boss," Micah replied, handing him a manuscript. "Found this on one of them."
Dutch nodded as he opened the manuscript to see not only a map of a train's schedule but a small map of the whole region with small markers on certain areas such as the western region of the Grizzlies and an area close to Citadel Rock. Dutch furrowed his brows as he continued to study the map. "Did you find anything else?" He asked Micah.
"Found this," He replied, pulling out a small journal-like folder from his coat. Dutch retrieved it from him, seeing a 'wanted' poster enclosed. He chuckled as he knew he could poke fun at Arthur.
There she was.
Her 'wanted' poster opened to another gang leader.
"Looks like a train ain't the only thing they're after," Dutch said, getting the other member's attention.
"What is it, Boss?" Micah asked.
"They're after another outlaw aside from us," Dutch explained, holding the poster up for everyone else to see, noting Arthur's reaction once his eyes finally lay on the woman he had been so curious about. "Minnie Barlow. Sounds like she keeps herself busy by takin' robberies from Colm. Remind me to buy her a drink!" Dutch joked. He looked at Arthur, who didn't pay any attention to what was just said. His eyes were fixated on Minnie's picture: blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a slight scar on her cheekbone.
She was beautiful.
'She wouldn't have to hold a gun to me to steal my heart.' He sighed to himself, blinking his eyes quickly to rid the doubtful thought to keep the focus on what he was doing.
"Lemme see it!" Micah asked as he reached his hands up at Dutch to retrieve the poster. "I can see why Colm's after her. Fine lookin' woman!" Micah teased, hiding his past
Arthur shook his head, not wanting to hear anything else come from his mouth. "Give me that!" He hissed as he took the poster from Micah. "Remember the task at hand here, you fool!"
Micah put his hands in the air, "Oh, I'm sorry, you can have that so you can have somethin' to jack off to later!" He seethed.
"Enough!" Dutch intervened. "Arthur's right, we have far more things to worry about than drooling over a picture! I'm sure you boys can take out your frustrations when we get out of here and find a town, but for the time being, remember what we're doing!" Dutch preached. Micah and Bill groaned as they mounted their horses.
"Arthur, hold these for me," Dutch said as he handed him the manuscript and the 'wanted' poster. "Keep the poster. She has a high bounty on her head. Maybe we can rack in extra cash." He explained. Arthur looked at him almost appalled but soon realized that he only said it because he knew the other men were listening. Dutch knew Arthur too well to know that he was developing an early crush, which wasn't likely of him, but he didn't do a good job of hiding it. "This was something about the train they was gonna rob. A Mister Leviticus Cornwall," Dutch continued. "Mount back up. Let's keep moving!"
Arthur gripped the reins tightly as he was not mentally prepared to face the harsh winds of Mother Nature. Dutch's speech the entire ascent down the mountain went through one ear and out the other as if he had heard it before. As a matter of fact, he had heard it all before.
Multiple times.
"Hey, you see that feller? Wasn't he at the camp with Colm?" Dutch asked over the whistling wind, interrupting Arthur's thoughts.
"Leave him to me," Arthur grunted, nudging his horse into a canter before breaking to a trot to cross the river.
"Alright, we're heading back. Just bring him back alive. He could be useful!" Dutch said as he and the rest of the gang parted from Arthur.
"Okay, you got it!"
"You got the wrong feller!" He heard the young man yell from ahead.
"Not so fast there, partner!" Arthur mumbled as he dallied his rope around the saddle horn, pulling the young man from his horse and into the snow. "You're comin' with me!" He said as he effortlessly tossed the man to where he was laying on his torso.
"Please, please, you don't need to do this!" He begged.
"What's your name, boy?" Arthur interrogated as he tossed the man over his horse's hindquarters before tethering the man's horse to his own.
"I don't know!"
"You don't know your name?" Arthur questioned.
"It's Kieran! Kieran Duffy!"
"Well, I ain't gonna lie to you, this is a real bad day for you Kieran Duffy," Arthur chuckled.
"Where are you taking me?"
"Somewhere you ain't gonna like,"
"Why? What are you gonna do to me?"
"Something you ain't gonna like! So I'd advise you to save your breath for screaming," Arthur demanded.
"No, please!" Kieran begged. "A-Are you runnin' with Minnie Barlow? She threatened to shoot me a couple of days ago and-"
"She was a fool for not shootin' ya!" Arthur replied, not liking that the subject of Minnie Barlow had yet been brought up again to him.
"I-I'm no use to you!" Kieran pleaded.
"You better shut your mouth, you little shit, or I will shut it for you," Arthur threatened.
His horse whinnied at the other horses as they arrived back to camp, "Here we are, you sack of shit. Let's introduce you to the boys." Arthur chuckled as he slung Kieran over his shoulder.
"Don't hurt me, please!"
"Are you trying to test me, is that it? Because I will break every bone in your body!" Arthur threatened.
"N-no! I'm sorry!"
"That's two bones right there!"
📷
"You found the little shit, did you," Dutch chuckled as he stepped outside the cabin as Arthur slung Kieran into the snow.
"Yep...I got him,"
"Very good. Welcome to your new home. Hope you're real happy here!" Dutch explained in sarcasm.
"You want me to make him talk?" Arthur asked as he stood the man up after cutting his ankles free of rope, gripping his shoulders roughly.
"Oh no, now all we'll get is lies! Uncle. Mr. Williamson, tie this maggot up someplace safe. We get him hungry first. I got a saying, my friend: we shoot feller who need shooting, save fellers as need saving, and feed 'em as need feedin'. We're gonna find out what you need," Dutch explained, holding the manuscript briefly up to let Kieran see that it now was in his possession. "I can't believe it! An O'Driscoll in my camp!"
"No, I ain't an O'Driscoll, Mister!" Kieran begged. "I hate that feller!"
"Oh, whatever you say, son! Well done, Arthur!"
"I'm just sorry we missed out on Colm,"
"Oh, there's time enough for that. Now, I gotta figure out if we can hit that train," Dutch replied before dismissing himself into the cabin to talk about matters with Hosea.
"Okay," Arthur replied, looking around before pulling out the 'wanted' poster of Minnie that he was given by Dutch back at Colm's camp. He only had a brief look at her then, but now that everything around him had slowed down, he could really take her in.

Even ‘Project Runway’ Couldn’t Save Zac Posen
Once upon a time, back in ye olde days of 2002, a young designer, just shy of 21 years old, was discovered by a store that was famous throughout the land for crowning the new princes of fashion. And so he was named, and so he was celebrated, and so it came to pass — at least for awhile.
He made big, lavish ball gowns. He wore top hats and tails. The most famous women wore his clothes and became his friends. Rich men invested. He won awards. He was on a reality TV show. He had a documentary made about him.
And last week, both his company and the store that first found him met their demise.
On Friday, not long after a bankruptcy court in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., put the final stamp on the sale of Barneys’ intellectual property to Authentic Brands Group, beginning the closure of its bricks and mortar stores, liquidation of its inventory and the start of its new life as a disembodied brand, an announcement came that Mr. Posen’s board had “determined to cease business operations and carry out an orderly disposition of its assets.”
Essentially, after what the announcement called a “comprehensive strategic and financial review of the businesses,” his backers had lost faith in the company. Ron Burkle of Yucaipa Companies, the majority owner, had been trying to sell his stake since April, with no success.
The brand’s approximately 60 employees were let go. Its former web address now links to a Shopify site. On Instagram, Mr. Posen thanked his team and “all those who have stood by me and the brand.”
The fairy tales of both Barneys New York and Zac Posen do not have a happy ending.
Derek Blasberg, fashion and beauty director of YouTube, tweeted, “Fashion has been (and always will be) a tough business, but it’s like 2002 is imploding!”
Maybe. Or maybe what the end of Barneys and the end of Zac Posen (at least as we currently know them) is really about is the end of a certain kind of fashion story, one that hasn’t really been relevant for awhile.
After all, Mr. Posen is not the first of his generation of designers — the generation that emerged post-9/11 and pre-global downturn, and was thrust into the spotlight very early on as part of a concerted effort to create a positive narrative in a dark time — to hit the hurdle of the changing business of today and not be able to get over it. He is simply the designer probably best known outside the ivory tower of fashion.
Derek Lam, for example, who also founded his business in 2002, was a runner-up in the 2005 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and won the CFDA emerging designer award for women’s wear the same year, decided earlier this year to close his high-end business and focus on a contemporary line. Thakoon Panichgul, who started his namesake line in 2004 and won the CFDA/Vogue award in 2006, put it on pause in 2017 and has now relaunched with a direct-to-consumer model. Behnaz Sarafpour, who also started her line in 2001 and was often nominated for CFDA awards, has switched from ready-to-wear to fragrances.
All were (and are) talented. But they came into the industry at a time when careers could be made by very specific gatekeepers and kingmakers: department stores, who held the keys to national reach, and glossy magazines, which served as the conduits to consumers, dictating trends and the names everyone needed to know.
And not long after they arrived, all of that changed. The premises on which Mr. Posen and his peers based their careers — that a seal of approval from Vogue, for example, was all the push you needed; that celebrities on the red carpet were the best marketing you could have; that a department store like Barneys was the open door to a consumer sector — no longer held true in the fractured age of social media, peer influencers and direct communication.
They were following one plotline, and all of a sudden it went veering off in multiple different directions.
Mr. Posen’s began as the charming wunderkind who grew up in TriBeCa, went to the arts-oriented private school Saint Ann’s, did a stint at Parsons, and was discovered before he had even graduated from Central Saint Martins in London. Naomi Campbell wore his clothes; so did Natalie Portman, Claire Danes, Katie Holmes and Lena Dunham.
He made himself into the P.T. Barnum of New York Fashion Week, and attracted investment from Sean Combs. (When Yucaipa bought a stake in Mr. Combs’s Sean John brand, it took over the investment in Mr. Posen’s brand.) He became the model of the well-connected, well-dressed, publicity-loving young designer. The red carpet was his happy place. It was also his distraction.
He suffered the fall from grace of the braggart, took himself to Paris in 2010 because he thought it might understand him better, and then returned, penitent and ready to work. His mother, a lawyer who had been his C.E.O., stepped down to make way for professional management.
Mr. Posen took on side gigs to support his brand: creative director of Brooks Brothers, designer of uniforms for Delta Air Lines. He was a judge on “Project Runway” from 2012 to 2018. He started a contemporary line, and did a collection for David’s Bridal. He embraced Instagram. (He has 1.9 million followers.) He owned his own mistakes, most publicly in “House of Z,” a 2017 documentary about his rise and fall and return. He wrote a cookbook. He was a regular at the Met Gala.
But weeks before he appeared on that 2019 red carpet with Jourdan Dunn (among others) on his arm, WWD reported his backers had begun looking for someone to buy their stake. They couldn’t find one.
It’s easy to blame the rise of the big luxury groups and the meddling of private equity, with its desire to get in and out of investments fast, for the difficulty of being a small, independent designer today. Certainly, financial engineering plays a part. But culture has changed, too.
The fairy tales of today center on nontraditional start-ups, disrupters geared toward a different value system (also a different commercial system). Their heroes have names like Supreme and Everlane and Outdoor Voices; Telfar and Pyer Moss. They are less about escapism, glamour and the power brokers of old, and more about the urgency of contemporary issues. They are built on a different kind of community and identity politics, and they have a different story arc.
Mr. Posen says he will be back. If so, that will be a fable to watch. For now, it’s about time fashion woke up and started rewriting its own myths.

Personal opinions today:
Martin Lam, ATFX
The British Prime Minister will submit a draft of the Brexit to the Congress on January 29. It is expected that the new draft will be partially revised and it is expected that Congress will accept it. The pound rose against the dollar and was tested at 1.29. In theory, if the new draft passes the opportunity, the pound against the dollar will likely test more than 1.30. If the European Parliament accepts the draft and leaves the EU as scheduled, it is estimated that the exchange rate of the British pound will rise even higher. And in this case, it is expected to boost the European currency because reduced the risk of Brexit, the gold will have a chance to fall and the stock market will rise.
In the short-term, the market is concerned about the European Central Bank’s interest rate meeting on Thursday, on the future monetary policy orientation. At that time, the speech of the ECB president will become the focus of the market, and the fluctuation of the euro will arise. In addition, the main data today include: UK job data, Germany and the Eurozone economic sentiment index, Canadian wholesale inventories, manufacturing new orders and US existing home sales. As always, UK job data and US existing home sales are more noticeable.
Due to the US holiday relationship yesterday, the US crude oil inventory report will be released on this Thursday, not tomorrow!
Today’s suggestion:
EURUSD
1.1390/1.1405 resistance 1.1350/1.1335 support
During the US holiday yesterday, the euro steady. Today’s European economic data is more concerned by the market. Looking back at the recent weak performance of the Eurozone economic data, the euro has accumulated a decline against the US dollar. And on Thursday, the European Central Bank announced interest rate monetary policy, the market is concerned about whether the European Central Bank is more biased towards doves, so that the euro continues to fall against the dollar. At present, the trend of the euro remains on the sidelines, and the exchange rate is expected to remain within the 1.13 level. However, if the exchange rate of the pound rises significantly, the euro will likely test the level of 1.14, please pay attention to trading risks.
GBPUSD
1.2905/1.2935 resistance 1.2835/1.2805 support
The British Prime Minister will submit a new draft of the Brexit to the British parliamentarians to discuss next Tuesday, the market is expecting new direction, support the rise in the pound exchange rate. Technically, the important resistance of the pound remained at 1.30 and the important support at 1.2805. If the short-term break through 1.28 support, the next look may be 1.26. In addition, if the issue of Brexit remains unfinished, it is probably more difficult for the pound to break through the 1.30 too much.
USDCHF
0.9985/1.0015 resistance 0.9945/0.9920 support
The European economic data is weak, the euro is falling, and the Swiss franc is indirectly negative. Technically, the US dollar against the Swiss franc is now likely to test 1.00. Before the challenge of 1.0015, the technical need to see the resistance of 0.9985. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the trend of the euro will change and drive the Swiss franc.
USD/JPY
109.85/110.05 resistance 109.25/109.05 support
Yesterday the US Dow closed, the Nikkei index steady, and the USD/JPY performed steadily. Today, if the US Dow and the Nikkei continue to rise, it is estimated that the dollar will rise against the yen. Technically, USD/JPY will have the opportunity to maintain above 109.30. If the market risk continues to cool down, the stock market will rise, and the USD/JPY is expected to test 110.
AUDUSD
0.7185/0.7205 resistance 0.7135/0.7115 support
Yesterday, China announced its fourth quarter GDP data. Before the data was released, the Australian dollar fell and fell to around 0.7145. At present, China’s data is still in line with market expectations and determines the market sentiment. However, the technical analysis remains unchanged. If the Australian dollar remains above 0.7145, the Australian dollar can still perform well, but if it falls below 0.7145, it must pay attention to further adjustments to the important support such as 0.7115 and 0.7080.
NZDUSD
0.6765/0.6785 resistance 0.6705/0.6675 support
The New Zealand dollar fell following the Australian dollar. It is recommended to continue to pay attention to the US dollar and Australian dollar trend reference without the current New Zealand data reference. After the release of China’s economic data yesterday, we can pay more attention to the progress of the Sino-US trade agreement and grasp the New Zealand dollar trading strategy.
USD/CAD
1.3315/1.3330 resistance 1.3235/1.3215 support
Crude oil futures prices continue to make good, offsetting the negative growth of the Canadian economy, but still can not improve the bearish Canadian dollar. At present, the technical breakthrough of 1.3295 resistance, it is possible to continue to extend to 1.3330, and even rebounded 38%, to 1.3365 resistance. But if the crude oil price breaks through the $55 resistance, there will be a chance to pull the dollar against the Canadian dollar to 1.3235/1.3215.
EUR/GBP
0.8855/0.8880 resistance 0.8820/0.8795 support
Britain’s Brexit needs to make progress, ease market tensions and boost the pound. On the contrary, the Eurozone data is still weak, the monetary policy tends to be dovish, and the euro falls against the pound against the euro. Technically expected 0.8850 resistance, if it can break through, look up 0.8880 and possibly extend to 8925. If the support level breaks 0.8795, it will probably test 0.8735. It is recommended to keep an eye out for big changes!
EURCHF
1.1345/1.1385 resistance 1.1300/1.1285 support
The euro was slowed down against the Swiss franc and continued to rebound last week. Technically, focus on the important resistance of 1.1345. If it continues to rise, it may challenge 1.14. Please keep an eye on the European Central Bank’s monetary policy this Thursday night, whether it will bring the euro to a weak position and change the trend of the euro against the Swiss franc.
XAUUSD
1282/1285 resistance 1277/1274 support
At present, the risk of Brexit has cooled down, and the market is waiting for the British Parliament to discuss again next Tuesday, the gold price adjustment. Technically, if the price of gold exceeds $1,280, the price of gold may fall further. Today, the US stock market reopened after the holiday. If the stock market rises, gold will go down further. The key is that if the support level before 1277 falls, it is possible that gold will test 1274 or 1270 dollars.
US crude oil futures
54.05/54.40 resistance 53.10/52.50 support
Sino-US trade consultations are progressing well. Earlier US crude oil inventories fell and OPEC could reduce production capacity, causing crude oil prices to continue to rise. Yesterday, Russia also said that it cut production, once again boosting crude oil prices. Only the market is worried about the lack of motivation in Europe and China’s economy. When investing, it must be noted that crude oil prices may limit the increase and have the opportunity to adjust the decline.
US Dow Jones Industrial Index Futures US30
24820/24980 resistance 24510/24370 support
Seems good progress has been made in Sino-US trade consultations. The Fed may suspend interest rate hikes, which will benefit the investment climate and keep the stock market rising. China’s GDP is in line with expectations, and the market sentiment is expected to support the rise of the US Dow. However, it must be noted that the performance of US corporations is announced, the stock market is subject to large fluctuations, and please careful when trading.
BTCUSD
3470 / 3380 support 3750 / 3950 resistance
Under the Fed monetary policy forecasts for the cryptocurrencies. If the US Dow index keeping up, which is negative for the crypto market. If the Dow go down, it maybe support the crypto currencies rebound. Technically, the bitcoin price will testing the support at 3470. If rebound, the first target maybe set at 3750.
Enjoy trading!

Sand Dune Restoration Works Continue on Sandy Beach in Vieux Fort | Saint Lucia

PRESS RELEASE
Sand Dune Restoration Works Continue on Sandy Beach in Vieux Fort
The Saint Lucia National Trust (SLNT) wishes to inform the public that the restoration of sand dunes within the Sandy Beach area continues during the course of this week. Sand dunes are mounts, hills or ridges of sand that lie behind the part of the beach affected by tides. Sand dunes and beach systems interact and are constantly undergoing small adjustments in response to changes in wind and wave climate or sea level. As such, dunes are able to supply sediment to the beach when it is needed in times of erosion, or store it when it is not.
Natural sand dunes are an effective defense against coastal flooding and erosion. However, the problem of sand dunes degradation arises in wide, sandy beaches such as those located in the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA). As such, natural sand dunes are in decline due to increased coastal erosion caused by sea level rise, coastal development high energetic wave events, and human impacts including sand mining, removal of vegetative cover and compaction of sand by vehicles.
Noting the importance of sand dunes as a coastal protection measure the SLNT was able to secure funding to implement some remedial measures determined to contribute to maintaining the vital ecosystem function of this natural feature. The construction and rehabilitation of sand dunes on Sandy Beach is at an advanced stage. Sand sediment (in this case from dredged sources off the beach) have been deposited at strategic points along the beach and reshaped into dune like structures which should ‘catch’ more sand and naturally extend over time. The next step will be to vegetate these dunes which add an extra layer of fortification. The restoration of sand dunes within the Sandy Beach area is also preparatory work for the revegetation phase of the project.
The rehabilitation exercise which commenced on May 5th has the strong backing of the Vieux Fort Town Council and is part of a comprehensive coastal stabilization project to address coastal degradation within PSEPA. This project is being implemented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and funded by the German Development Bank (KfW) under a Local Adaptation Measures (LAMS) Grant Scheme.

5 Shoe Trends For Spring
With Daylight Savings Time behind us, we can now eagerly await the arrival of summer. And since it’s no secret that shoes are at the top of the guilty pleasure shopping list, we’ve got the five shapes you’ll be seeing in 2018. From dainty embellished heels to velvet for day, the shoe trends for spring are as varied as they are pretty.
VELVET
Models pounded the Valentino catwalk in one of the season’s biggest footwear trends—the velvet pump with bow detailing. At both Dries Van Noten and Versace, we saw strappy pointed stilettos and pumps that were distinctively velvet. A staple of the ’80s, velvet is making its way back into 2018. Ditch basic black and opt for the plush material in vibrant colour, block heels or patterns instead.

FLAT MULE
The trend that built Gucci shows no sign of dissipating. Classic loafers as mules are simple and polished enough to wear to the office or even with an ankle-length dress. These easy-to-wear slip ons are perfect for your next vacation. Other labels to utilize this open-back shoe silhouette include Derek Lam and Claudia Li. It seems we will be swapping our heels for this comfortable option for months to come. Thank goodness.

PLATFORMS
I remember watching Soul Train as a kid and seeing people dancing in these thick-bottomed shoes. Despite their chunkiness, the versatile shoes are great for people who might want to add a few inches to their height. At Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma there were bright orange platforms, while Jil Sander showed black pairs with blocks of space cut into the soles. But the most talked about platform—ridiculously high and colourful—was by Mary Katrantzou.

EMBELLISHMENT
There is a more-is-more approach to design these days which is where embellishment adds an eye-catching element to any outfit. It’s interesting to see many designers apply crystals minimally along the heels to create a tasteful look. Embellishment was seen at Christopher Kane and in the pearls at Simone Rocha. When you wear a simple jeans-and-white-tee ensemble, bejewelled shoes are your best bet for making a stylish entrance.

FLUFFY DETAILS
Fur details are what you expect to see in the cold months but this spring, don’t be surprised to see furry details on toe-baring sandals. Or if covered up is more your thing, take a look at the Saint Laurent catwalk where models sported knee-high boots covered in bright and colourful furs and feathers!
