Book 519
J.G. Posada: Messenger of Mortality
Julian Rothenstein, ed.
Moyer Bell Limited 1989
I think José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) may be one of my favorite artists. His work speaks to so many aspects of my own personality—satirical, humorous, populist, absurd, and with a great appreciation for the morbid. So, I think it’s a bit of a crime that there aren’t more books of his work published in this country. It is estimated that over the course of his career he produced over 20,000 images, but, despite that, he died penniless and forgotten. However, it wouldn’t be long after his passing that he would be rediscovered and studied by such artists as Rivera and Kahlo, and then by Europeans such as Eisenstein and the French surrealists. Posada saw and memorialized life as it happened around him—the working people, riots, natural disasters, suicides, murders, and crimes—but it is his calaveras, the skulls used to commemorate the Day of the Dead, which he used to expose hypocrisy and reveal the ultimate absurdity of humanity, that he is best remembered.

He has his favorites.
All gods do.  The gods, they say, play dice with mortal lives, because when you’re immortal (not eternal, that’s a different basket of fruit, but immortal, and unending, until they do), there aren’t many games that can actually hold your interest for more than a few decades.
We do not speak of the time when Melusine attempted to introduce the pantheon to Monopoly.  The echoes of that war are still resounding through the remotest of halls, unending, like the toll of a bell with no clapper.
But Wily, he has his favorites.
He is with the addicts who seek his embrace in controlled substances, chasing him one hit at a time, and while he may feel badly to have stolen their lives away, they made a choice, once upon a time; they chose the shiver and the swirl, and he will not refuse them.
He is with the curious who seek his embrace for the very first time, the pipe or the pill or the phial or the needle in their hands, and he guides them as gently as his ever-shifting nature allows, and he hopes that he will not become their one true god, even as he hopes to see them again.  Like all things that live, he wants to survive, and that means, on some level that he must spread the faith.
He is with the ones whose own minds produce the chemicals and chaos that enable his ascension, the ones who see the air alight with colors, the ones who seek pharmaceuticals not to join him, but to push him, however temporarily, to the side.  He loves them all.
No matter what else can be said of him, he loves them all.  He can’t help himself.
He doesn’t want to.
But he has his favorites, and he keeps them as close as he can, even when they slip free of his grasp for their own good, and he cheers for their survival.  He would save every one of them if he could.
He never had a chance.

Carrie Moyer at DC Moore Gallery
Colors pop and merge into the background while shapes seem to hover on the surface of Carrie Moyer’s latest paintings at DC Moore. These tensions – which define Moyer’s practice – are made more provocative in her most recent work by the addition of more representative elements, like the tassel-like floral bells dotting the surface of this painting, ‘Hell’s Bells and Buckets.’ Moyer notes that in some recent work, her palette has ‘downshifted,’ or adopted a chromal sobriety found to either side of the central flow of form in this painting. Far from creating a subdued painting, however, the effect is to heighten excitement at the shifting forms at center. (On view in Chelsea through May 1st. Masks and social distancing required.) Carrie Moyer, Hell’s Bells and Buckets, acrylic and sand on canvas, 66 x 60 inches, 2020.

[image description: A stunning Black woman with a large afro sits on a slanted musical bar wearing only a yellow robe. Behind and in front of her, musical notation floats in a painterly blue and cyan sky. Some of the notes in the stanza are as you’d expect. But others are literally hooks. Text reads, “181, BELLE RINGER • SMALL GOD OF MUSICAL ‘HOOKS’”]
• • • • •
Before she came along, drones and chants were where it was AT. Find a note, so your audience would have to pay attention, and beat it to death one syllable at a time. If you were feeling really innovative, you could pound a heavy beat on a rock at the same time. Who needed melody, or harmony, or variation?
Forming in the aether, Belle heard these single-sound songs, and knew that they were good. But more, she knew that they could be so much BETTER, and in that knowledge, a small god was born.
She came into being already knowing her place and her purpose, and with her she brought music that stuck to the soul, songs that would be remembered when the singer was no longer singing them, refrains that would be repeated and spread from person to person, fire to fire, like fleas skipping between rats. She elevated music from pastime to pathogen, and as the infection rolled across humanity’s consciousness, she rolled with it, laughing all the while.
She is surprisingly unchanged from those early days, is Belle; like the alligator, she found her perfect form easy and early, and she stopped there, needing no evolution to refine her. She is the hook in the harmony, the meat in the melody, the depth in the descant, and she knows no genres, and she knows no borders. She knows only the song, and the joy of seeing it spread.
She was with Freddie Mercury when he channeled the divine in his own rhapsodies, and she was with the people who wrote that toothpaste commercial you heard when you were ten years old, the one that haunts you still today. She does not distinguish between “good” music and “bad” music: music is music in our Belle’s ears, and she wants it played long and loud and everything else can be discussed over time and tea and noise complaints.
She is here. She has been here for a very long time. She is not going anywhere.
And never, never tell her to turn the music down.
