Lloyd Center Cinemas - Portland, OR (1986)

"Tom Moyer knows the figures all too well: By the end of 1986 more than one out of every three households in the United States was equipped with at least one VCR. But the Portland, Oregon, businessman who owns the Pacific Northwest's largest theater chain, Tom Moyer's Luxury Theatres, thinks he has come up with a key to "getting the moviegoer out of the house and into the theater." He commissioned the local architectural firm Broome, Oringdulph, O'Toole, Rudolf, Boles & Associates (BOOR/A) to design not one but two multi-screen cinema complexes that would turn any couch potato into a live wire.

The Lloyd Center Cinemas was designed with the intent to rekindle the spirit and excitement of the '20s and '30s when a night out at the movies was a special occasion.

Neon signs within the glass and red steel galleria are visible from major arterials that access the shopping center. Ticket booths and queuing areas are located to assure an unobstructed view into the neon-faced lobby. Once patrons are drawn to the building's activity, they find themselves, indeed, becoming part of an event. More than 3,000 square feet of specially colored and textured exterior concrete block and tile arcades protect patrons from weather as they line up at the four-station ticket booth. Next, they proceed into the brightly lit glass galleria and the rotunda which acts as a waiting room and point from which to view the rest of the building. These areas are lit with suspended concentric rings that contain spotlights, providing uplight to the structural frame. The underside of the rings contains circles of neon, backed with a mirrored surface."

Noe Crane is on his way to becoming a household name in his hometown of Las Glorias, California. His investigative talk show, Exposé, is known for delving deep into people involved in the ins and outs of the city, from obnoxious internet celebrities to ex-convicts and criminals. As a host, Noe himself assumes a rather eccentric—if not slightly controversial—persona on camera: witty, intensely brutal, and above all, an insatiable appetite for the truth. What the public doesn’t know, however, is that his quest for justice continues behind closed doors, as he partners up with his longtime acquaintance, Azra Moyer, becoming violent vigilantes hiding in the shadows. With the help of Noe’s mysterious ability to conjure and manipulate fire, they’d stop at nothing to cleanse the city of all evil and leave no trace behind, allowing them to tread safely between their two lives. azra moyer || he/him. born 1991. deuteragonist. a reserved, highly intelligent criminal attorney with an impressive track record despite his relatively young age. he's a longtime acquaintance of noe, having known each other since their childhood, and acts as his right-hand man and confidant as vigilantes. while he's deemed trustworthy enough by noe, azra has his own secret to hide—one he will take to the grave if he must.

jesse shim || he/him. born 1991. antagonist. a mysterious figure who resurfaces in noe's and azra's lives after being presumed dead for two decades. he claims to be a social worker who has just moved back to las glorias after being away for two decades and shows great interest in reconnecting as long lost friends, but is that truly his goal in approaching them?

During regular gameplay (either after the tutorial or after the player skips the tutorial), Alex is a regular townie in her own household. Additionally, Alex never ages, even if she is added to a played family, but will remain on her first day of young adulthood forever.

Now that Lisa has romanced the BFF household, she decided to have baby 20 with Alex Moyer. One of my favorite BG townies for my sims to date (or in this case have a baby with)

At this point an invitation from Gavin to accompany him to Geek Con came in.

My approach to historic accuracy normally is “it looks vaguely old-timey”, but Geek Con screenshots would be too much even for my standards. On the other hand this particular household could really use the prizes from the competitions.

So what I did is this: I sent my sims to Geek Con, took notes of significant events, saved and then staged a series of photos showing my sims at a fun fair instead of Geek Con.

What happened in gameplay:

- Daniel lost the videogame challenge - Daniel briefly worked at the bar - Meanwhile the other four lost the hackaton - Except for Connor, who got forcefully reset out of his seat by Katrina Caliente - Connor sang for money, later the others joined in - They were able to buy festival foods with the busking money - Caroline and John autonmously appeared and seemed approving of everything my sims did, even tipped them - Alex Moyer ordered fries and then left them for my sims to pick up and take home

Melting Pot Challenge

I haven’t seen this challenge idea anywhere (because truthfully it’s bananas) so I wanted to spell it out here. My goal is to play through as many of the pre-made Sims as possible and connect them all into one massive family tree.

Aging is turned on only for the active household, so none of the characters die off before I can get to them. I also turned off neighborhood stories.

I’m starting with Alex Moyer as my founder because she’s immortal. I’ll keep her in her own lot where I can store any items I’d like to keep (collectibles, gravestones, etc.) She’ll also write a Book of Life for all the characters as a way to memorialize each of them.

For each Sim, I’ll try my best to complete the Aspiration that’s originally assigned to them.

Last names will be passed on matrilineally with the first born being the heir to the family line (though I save the right to pick whichever kid I prefer when I feel like it lol)

When it’s time for my current family to merge with another, I’ll use a random number generator to pick the next family.

Why am I doing this? Two reasons. 1) I don’t tend to play with the pre-made Sims and I think this is a cool way to get to know these characters. 2) I’m very bad at finishing gameplays that I start, so this will challenge me in the most extreme way possible.

Like all gnomes, Splunge lives in perfect harmony with his environment. Unfortunately for him, his environment happens to be household plumbing. Every unwashed toilet is an affront to his name.  Every untidied sink stands as a reminder that he, once hailed as an unbelievable miracle, is now nothing more than an unwanted chore.

He would call upon the gods of chifforobes and chamberpots, if they were still anywhere to be found; the old god of chamberpots has since transitioned to become the small god of Hospice Care, utterly essential to those who need her, all but forgotten by those who don’t, who would rather not consider her existence.  He would call upon those old and half-forgotten deities, and ask them to remind the world that it could be so much worse than he, with his convenient plunger and his caustic chemicals.

But that power is not his to hold, and there are drains to be cleaned and clogs to be removed.  So he does what he can with what he has in the time that is allotted to him, and he wonders when humanity forgot that he was the iconography of a miracle.  That the lack of shit-buckets and worrying about whose house sat higher on the hill than those around it was his gift to them, and gifts, when unappreciated, can be reclaimed.

Splunge is in perfect harmony with his environment.  He just wishes, on his uncharitable days, that his environment could learn to be in harmony with him.  And then he stops his wishing, because the drain is backed up again, and someone has to take care of business, so that everyone else can keep on taking care of business without complication.

Bekindtoyourself-darling’s ‘just make it better’ save file v.2 - Snowy Escape Update

This is an update to my save file in which Snowy Escape has been updated. Not all lots have been changed or changed majorly as some I personally believe are already very nice. But some have been updated, some have had minor or major changes. The sims have also been updated.  While the original intent is for this save file to be played with cc for the sims, there is an option for cc free sims, but be aware they won't look as good as their cc'd counterparts. I would recommend default skin or default eyes at the least as this helps update their look majorly without the need for a ton of cc. There are three versions to this save file. These versions are:

CC Free Buildings, but CC’d Sims (You can find the cc lists under the cut, most sims have the same CC.) (This is labelled as the CC save)

CC Free Buildings and Sims (This is labelled as the No CC save)

Buildings Only. No Sims.  (This is labelled as the No Sim save)

This means you can pick the one right for you. If you want my cc’d versions of the sims which you can look at if you go through my sims tag then you can go through the cc lists and download all the cc. CC Lists are all linked below. While some sims have a lot, most sims have basic cc like skin details and default eyes, most of the cc is the same. While each household has a cc list a lot of those cc lists are identical.  You can find all the CC lists linked below.

Equally if you work without cc or don’t want the hassle of downloading more cc you can get the cc free sim version or if you want a completely empty world save there’s a version with no sims at all.

Please bear in mind that I have all the packs, although I do not have the new kits. This is a save file that uses all the packs and uses them in different worlds. You might find things missing from builds if you don’t have all packs! You might also find items missing off of sims such as hairs and clothes!

I have gone through and added relationships for sims. There are some sims who are completely new and some sims have relationships we might remember from sims 2!

If you use the save and take screenshots etc. I’d love to be tagged so I can see you enjoy it and using the sims and the builds!

I have also sorted out an issue with the bathroom in the Strangerville bar, it is now big enough for your sims to go into and use! If you notice any other issues when playing with my save file do let me know so that I can fix them!

The Manfred and Villareal families are semi-favorites, the BFF, Alex Moyer and the Caliente wrote themselves into the story by being in the right place at the right time and the Precinct 41 sims all have french names, so they fit the setting.

The Public Universal Friend

Well, I know there haven’t been much Pride and/or Queer history posts this month (I know, there haven’t been ANY), but I had In my drafts a started post about the Public Universal Friend (which is, in my honest opinion, the BEST chosen name I’ve ever heard), and well, the Stuff You Missed in History Class episode (posted last week) made me want to finish this and share the simply awesome person the Friend was, the super interesting life they lived, and of course several resources to learn more about them at the end of the post.

Imagine this: a nonbinary nonconformig preacher in the late 18th century that with their theology (very similar to the Quaker teachings) opposed slavery and stressed free will, attracted many followers known as the Society of Universal Friends, and among them was a group of unmarried women who took leading roles in their households and community. Sounds like taken from a fanfic, huh? Like, the kind of fiction that we want to see, representing all gender identities and challenging the traditional gender roles of society. But it’s not fan fiction, the Friend was a real person and here a little bit about them and their work:

Born Jemima Wilkinson on November 29, 1752 to a Quaker family in Rhode Island, and was assigned female at birth and lived until 1776 identified as female.

In 1776 Jemima fell severely ill, and reported having died. Then was reanimated by “the power of God” as the Public Universal Friend.

The Quakers are also known as Friends. So the Friend chose their name with taste.

From then on, the Friend refused to answer to the name “Jemima Wilkinson”, identified as neither male nor female, asked to not be referred to with gendered pronouns.

Their followers respected the Friend and their wishes and referred to them as the Friend, P.U.F, the Public Universal Friend, and even in private diaries respected this.

If asked if they were male or female, the Friend had a great answer: “I am that I am”.

The Friend was pretty genderless in all manner: their dress was kind of masculine and androgynous (they wore long, loose clerical robes and a cravat, did not wear caps, and wore the same kind of hats the Quaker men did), their voice was described as with a “feminine-masculine tone”, they moved easily, freely and modestly

The Friend began to preach and travel with a group or people disowned by the Society of Friends (the Quakers), through Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.

Their worship meetings were initially held outdoors or borrowed meeting houses and attracted large audiences since they were open to the public, and some formed a congregation of Universal Friends. They were a group of roughly equal numbers of men and women, and generally young (under 40), and several members were Black.

The Friend preached that ANYONE regardless of gender could gain access to God’s light, called for the abolition of slavery, stressed free will, preached humility and hospitality towards everyone, disfavoured marriage, and even though did not see celibacy as mandatory preached sexual abstinence.

They held that women should “obey God rather than men”, and their most committed followers were four dozen of unmarried women known as the Faithful Sisterhood, who took on leading roles usually reserved to men.

The portion of households headed by women in the Society’s settlements was 20%, higher than in the surrounding areas.

The Universal Friends had several legal problems when in the mid and late1780s they established a settlement, but lacked solid title to the ownership of the lands , until they eventually settled in Jerusalem.

From 1786 to 1793, the Friend lived with Sarah Richards in a house in Jerusalem (which still stands today!). Sarah and her husband Abraham Richards met the Friend in 1785, and when Abraham died in 1786 Sarah and her infant daughter moved with the Friend. Sarah adopted a similar androgynous style (a few other female friends did this too), and came to be called Sarah Friend. Sarah also preached, and she held the Society’s property in trust until shed died in 1793.

On July 1, 1819 the congregation's death book records "25 minutes past 2 on the Clock, The Friend went from here." A regular meeting was held and after that no funeral service, according to the Friend’s wishes.

If all cis people could learn a single thing from the long list above, it would be to be like the Friend’s friends: respect other’s wishes, and refer to people as they want to. Using people’s preferred pronouns is easy, calling people by their chosen names is easy, so just do it.

So, if for some reason it is not already clear, all people of all gender identities and sexual preferences are welcome to this blog, and (I cannot stress this enough) trans-exclusionary “feminists”, homophobes and  transphobes are definitely not.
