Bryan Cranston Talks 'Wakefield,' His Walter White Disguise, and Whether He'd Do a Superhero Movie
Bryan Cranston at a special screening of ‘Wakefield’ (Getty Images)
In Wakefield, Bryan Cranston plays a successful New York lawyer, who, upon returning to his perfect suburban home one night, decides to take a nap in the attic above his garage. He doesn’t wake up until morning, and decides to make it a full day away from his wife (Jennifer Garner) and twin daughters. Days turn then into weeks, and weeks into month, as Howard Wakefield scavengers food from the trash, grows out a scruffy beard, and spies on his family from a rear window — all the while dissecting the trivialities of his seemingly idyllic (but clearly not idyllic) life.
It’s a tough act to pull off: How can we feel for this guy who would put his family through this type of ordeal? But then again this is the man who played of the greatest antiheroes in TV history, meth king Walter White in Breaking Bad. Cranston doesn’t want you to think about Walt while watching Wakefield, and the characters couldn’t be more different.
But we’ve been through this sort of emotional grinder with Cranston before, and he once again proves a master of bringing honesty and complexity to his characters. In a candid interview with Yahoo Movies, the 61-year-old actor talked about why he could relate to his misanthrope from Wakefield (written and directed by Robin Swicord and based on a short story by E.L. Doctorow), his go-to disguises, his desire to do a comic-book movie, and more.
Obviously this scored high on the Cranston Assessment Project Scale, the formula you’ve said you use to choose roles. Where did it spike in the algorithm? I ran it. It was very high on the story, very high on the screenplay, very high on the character. And high, once I talked to her, on the director. So the first three were killers. Bang bang bang. The character — oof, wow. But the story itself really makes you think. It’s relatable. Who hasn’t thought, “I would love to take my own day and not have any responsibility, not have any phone calls or texts or emails. I would love to just check out.” And Howard Wakefield does. But moment to moment. I just need a few hours. I don’t want to confront this issue right now. I don’t want to get into a fight. I’m tired. I’ll just deal with it in the morning.
Like when you get the flu and go, “Well, this is kind of nice not to have to do anything.” Yeah. If it’s not too bad. I’m watching a movie and I’m eating chicken soup. Mmmm. It’s not terrible! My wife is waiting on me. Have you ever faked that you are sicker than you really are?
Probably, yeah. [Laughs] It’s like [in a whisper], “I don’t feel well, I just don’t feel well.”
Bryan Cranston in ‘Wakefield’ (IFC Films)
What’d you find particularly juicy about Howard? Well, I related to him. I knew what that was like. And then I discovered that this was originally a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne back in 1835, in England.
That then was adapted into a short story in the New Yorker by E.L. Doctorow. Yes, so this sensibility of feeling pressured and wanting to take a break has been with man probably since the beginning. Can you imagine the caveman going, “F–k, if I fight another mastodon, I’m going to scream. Can I just lay down the sand?”
Howard ultimately ends up looking like a caveman. You see! Nice little come-around. But funny you should mention that because he does get down to a very basic type of animal — an animal who is concerned about food, shelter and clothing.
There’s an ongoing dialogue in the screenwriting community about the challenges of telling a story that features an unlikable, or questionably likable, main character. Did you find Wakefield likable? Do you think he has redeeming qualities? I think that’s a misconception. I think we’ve been groomed to think and to accept like dogma that you have to have a protagonist and an antagonist. You have to like this person and dislike this person. Really? And every rule is made to be broken. I think it’s a false premise. What I think the screenwriter or storyteller has to do is to create an honest depiction of a life, a plausible life, and leave it up to the audience to decide if they like him or if they don’t. If you are able to convey vulnerability, sensibility and honesty, some people will like you. Because they believe you: “He’s being honest.”
And human. “He’s human. He has frailties. And he’s feeling pressure. I get it. I like him. He’s me.” And then that character can turn. And then your allegiance to that character can drop. But it doesn’t mean you’re less interested in that character, or less invested in that character. It’s just malleable. It fluctuates.
Breaking Bad was a very good example of that. Something [changes], and then it’s like, “No, Jesse’s the one [who I like].” “Well, I still think that Walter…” This is real life. Do we always love the people we know? No. There are days when our affinity toward someone is lower than others. It’s honest. So I think we’re giving the audience respect and allowing them to feel what they are going to feel.
Breaking Bad definitely transcended the idea of heroism. People still debate whether Walter White was a hero or a villain. Do you think the audience could give Wakefield more leeway because they’ve seen you pull that balancing act before? Well I hope they don’t. I hope they take it on face value of what we’re presenting in this new story and not bring any baggage from previous. That’s the goal. You’re still you. There are elements of me on screen in everything I do that you say, “Well, that’s him.” But that’s the glorious thing about human beings, that we so want to be told a story that we’re willing to suspend belief.
Have you ever gotten sick of fame to the point where you’ve wanted to pull a disappearing act? Yeah, I do… What gets to be an imposition is if I’m out with my wife and daughter and all the attention from other people goes to me at the exclusion of [them]. So now the dynamic has completely shifted. It could be weird. It’s something that I’m learning and I’m getting more accustomed to because apparently it is what it is. And it’s not something I ever wanted or dreamt about. It’s a byproduct of what I do, and I have to accept that.
But I don’t want to make it sound like, “Oh, what a burden it is to be famous.” It is a condition that you make adjustments to, just like anybody. But I’m thrilled when I meet people where the work has brought them some kind of joy or togetherness or they bonded with their mom or dad over something. Like “I just loved watching Malcolm [in the Middle] with my kids.” That’s really great, and I really appreciate that. It’s just the constant attention toward me. I get bored with talking about that. What about you? I want a more well-rounded experience.
Have you ever gone out in disguise? Mmm-hmm. Usually I just wear a baseball cap and some glasses but very seldom does that really work. I walked the floor of Comic-Con in my own Walter White mask. And that was fun. Because I got some attention, but I didn’t get the level of attention I would have if I would’ve been just myself…
Bryan Cranston at San Diego Comic-Con
Do you still have your Walter White costume, did you keep that? I do. I have the mask and the clothes. I have the Heisenberg hat and the sunglasses.
But you never wear that out in public. I would never. I don’t think so. Talk about drawing attention to yourself.
People loved you in Power Rangers. I know that franchise holds a special place in your heart since you did some early work on the series. How was the homecoming? It was fun! Because it was a much more sophisticated approach to the storytelling. And I appreciated that. It wasn’t like, “BOW! ZING! Let’s get him! I will stop you, Rangers!” It wasn’t corny. This was a fully realized concept that really caught the imagination.
I worked on it two days. One day was all the stuff in the spaceship with the head. I had to keep my head on a cradle. I couldn’t move or my face would go out of focus. I never left that cradle. So to this day I haven’t met those other actors. I never met them. And then the other day was being in that costume, which was four-and-a-half hours of makeup. Crawling through the mud and singing in a foreign language. It was a challenge, but fun.
Are you still angling to play the X-Men villain Mr. Sinister? I’m not angling to do anything. Someone brought that to my attention and I looked into it. But I would love to play a character that has not been done before, that I can put my stamp on and create that character from the comic book to the screen. Mr. Sinister seemed to be a good option. Like “Oh yeah, I could play that role. That would be interesting.” But I’m not against playing a hero, either. Whatever may come up. But I would like to do a fully realized action film, either Marvel or DC or whatever.
Wakefield is now in select theaters. Watch the trailer:

'Power Rangers' Mid-Credits Sequence Explained: Guess Who's Coming to Detention?
The ‘Power Rangers’ (Photo: Kimberley French/Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)
Lionsgate’s big-budget Power Rangers reboot reunites the original team of mighty morphin’ martial artists who fought their way onto television in 1993, followed by a big-screen adventure two years later. And fans of that inaugural line-up can probably still recite their names from memory: Jason, the Red Ranger (played in the new film by Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly, the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott), Billy, the Blue Ranger (RJ Cyler), Trini, the Yellow Ranger (Becky G), and Zack, the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin). So every Ranger is present and accounted for before go going into battle against Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), right? Not quite. One key team member is MIA for the duration of Power Rangers, introduced only in a closing credits sequence that will delight viewers familiar with Rangers-lore and likely to confound those still learning the difference between a Zord and a Zeo Crystal.
That missing Ranger is Tommy Oliver, a.k.a. the Green Ranger, whose role spanned multiple versions of the TV series. Introduced midway through the first season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Tommy subsequently morphed into other guises — including the Red Turbo Ranger and the Black Dino Ranger— on later editions like Power Rangers Turbo and Power Rangers Dino Thunder, respectively. In all those appearances, he was played by Jason David Frank, who has a brief cameo in the new Power Rangers, though not as his signature alter ego. In fact, Tommy doesn’t appear on screen at all in the post-credits scene, suggesting that, should there be a Power Rangers 2, Lionsgate will launch a high-profile hunt for the right person to play the new Green Ranger.

Here’s how it goes down on screen (spoiler alert!): Midway through the closing credits, the movie cuts back to the detention room where three of the five troublemaking Rangers — Jason, Kimberly, and Billy — first encountered each other, Breakfast Club-style. This time, they’re joined by Trini and Zack, who had blown off enough school to earn a semester’s worth of weekend detentions. As the quintet trade notes about the crazy adventure they’ve just been on, the hapless Richard Vernon stand-in announces that they have a new student joining the detention crew: Tommy Oliver. At that point, director Dean Israelite directs our attention to an empty desk with a green jersey hung over the chair. Then we cut away to a quiet school hallway that’s rocked by a sudden explosion. In case that stinger leaves any doubt that the Green Ranger cometh, the official Power Rangers Twitter account tweeted out this poster the night before the film’s opening weekend.

— Power Rangers (@PowerRangers) March 23, 2017
So what does Tommy’s arrival mean for Power Rangers 2? Well, if they’re planning to follow Ranger canon, the Green Ranger was originally a foe, rather than a friend. Debuting in the 17th episode of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Tommy was already a skilled fighter under the command of perpetual Rangers foe Rita Repulsa, who instructed him to clear a path for her ultimate triumph in her Earth-conquering plans. She picked the right surrogate: With his Green Ranger abilities, Tommy deals the other costume-clad adventurers some significant body blows, until the Red Ranger manages to eke out a last-minute victory in a head-to-head battle. But in defeat, Tommy also triumphs: Rita’s spell is broken, leaving him free to join the good guys…and become Kimberly’s off-again, on-again love interest.
Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa in ‘Power Rangers’ (Photo: Kimberly French/Lionsgate/Courtesy Everett Collection)
As the launching pad of a planned six-film franchise, Power Rangers certainly lays the groundwork for a similar narrative arc. After all, in this version of the story, Rita happens to be a former Green Ranger, who turns against her team in the film’s prologue, killing them all on a prehistoric Earth in pursuit of the planet’s energy-generating Zeo Crystal. She’s equally hungry for that mystical object when she reawakens to face a new group of Power Rangers some 65 million years later. And while the neophyte warriors win this round by literally punching Rita into deep space, her fate is far from sealed. If and when she finds her way back, she’s going to be in an Empire Strikes Back kind of mood, and Tommy — who, as the mid-credits teaser implies, is already a bit of an explosive personality — can serve as the Darth Vader to her emerald-colored Palpatine. (It’s worth noting that Rita already tries to play spoiler once in Power Rangers, cornering Trini in her home and forcefully suggesting that the Yellow Ranger should turn against her friends.) Anyone else find the looming alliance between Rita and Tommy…disturbing?

Justice League and Power Rangers Team Up... in the Comics
(DC Entertainment/Boom! Studios)
Two of next year’s most-anticipated cinematic supergroups are teaming up, but this collaboration won’t be on the big screen. The Justice League and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will unite in a limited-edition comic series arriving in January.
This Justice League lineup will differ slightly from the movie version, with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Cyborg being joined by Green Lantern John Stewart instead of Aquaman. The Power Rangers will be in their usual rainbow grouping of Black, Red, Yellow, Pink, Blue, and Green.

According to the synopsis jointly released by the characters’ respective publishers, DC Comics and Boom! Studios, the plot will involve some alternate universe hopping.
Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove when the Power Rangers’ Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged! Zack the Black Ranger is flung into an alternate universe full of citizens possessing outrageous powers and wearing strange costumes. Will Jason the Red Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger, Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger and Tommy the Green Ranger be able to get to Zack in time to save him from Batman?
There will be six monthly issues, all written by Tom Taylor (best known for writing Injustice: Gods Among Us) and illustrated by Stephen Byrne. Each issue will also feature a variant cover pairing members of the iconic teams: Batman/Pink Ranger; Cyborg/Blue Ranger; Flash/Black Ranger; Green Lantern John Stewart/Yellow Ranger; Superman/Green Ranger; Wonder Woman/Red Ranger.

Bryan Cranston Joins 'Power Rangers' Movie as Zordon
By Dave McNary, Variety
Bryan Cranston has joined Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie as Zordon, who serves as the young group’s mentor.
The studio has tapped Dean Israelite to direct and has cast five young actors to star — Becky G. as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger and R.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger. Elizabeth Banks came on board in February to play the evil witch Rita Repulsa.
Power Rangers will hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
Producers are Saban Films’ Haim Saban and Brian Casentini, along with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Allison Shearmur is an exec producer. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama wrote the script.
The story reimagines the origins of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, a group of high school kids given extraterrestrial powers who unite to save the world.
The 1993 Fox Kids TV series became a pop culture phenomenon and inspired a big-screen adaptation, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, in 1995.
Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced plans in 2014 to develop and produce a live-action movie based on Saban’s Power Rangers property as the first film in a franchise. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer recently said that the studio could make as many as seven Power Rangers movies.
Cranston will be seen next in Broad Green’s thriller The Infiltrator.
Lionsgate unveiled Cranston’s casting on Twitter. Cranston also tweeted about the news.

Superheroes Spotted On Set ... Looking Not-So-Superheroic
Power Rangers fans got a fierce first look at Elizabeth Banks as Repulsa earlier this month. The actress is playing the movie’s green-hued villain, an evil alien bent on conquering the world. She certainly sounds scary — that is, until we caught a gander at some paparazzi photos from the Vancouver set this week that showed Banks looking less than dastardly. She’s not the first high-flying super-being to get dragged down to Earth. Click through to see some other famous heroes and baddies being caught out-of-character and out-of-context.

'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' Reboot: Can It Dodge the 'MMPR' Curse?
"Go Go Power Rangers!"
More than two decades after its debut on television, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” lives again, this time via a live-action cinematic reboot with franchise aspirations.
Details are scant about the revamped Power Rangers. Today’s announcement by Lionsgate and “MMPR” producer Haim Saban didn’t have a timetable for the movie remake, a director, writer, or cast. About all we know, per the press release, is “the new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.”
Presumably, the new film will also reboot lagging merchandise sales, too.
You might be surprised it took Lionsgate and producer Haim Saban this long to get with the program, considering Hollywood’s feeding frenzy over reinveting old properties. But the Power Rangers don’t have a proven track record on the big screen. Their first cinematic go-round, 1995’s “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie,” was hardly a blockbuster with $66 million worldwide; while the 1997 follow-up, “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie,” was a brightly colored bomb, grossing just $9.6 million worldwide.
David Yost, arguably the most prolific Power Ranger as Billy Cranston (the Blue Ranger), told Yahoo Movies during a phone call on Wednesday that he’s excited Saban went with the “Hunger Games” studio. “They obviously have a proven track record. And I will be very excited to see what they do with the franchise.”
Producers no doubt hope fans remember the TV incarnations more fondly.
The franchise-launching original, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” followed its sextet of young heroes, who had the ability to “morph” into costumed (and color-coordinated) warriors, as they battled a series of alien baddies. Utilizing stock footage from the Japanese television show “Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger” (1992-93), the series almost immediately became a worldwide sensation (and spawned an extremely lucrative merchandising line), and is today considered a prominent piece of ’90s pop culture.
The original series ran for 145 episodes over the course of three seasons on Fox Kids from Aug. 28, 1993 to Nov. 27, 1995. There was a 10-episode spinoff miniseries, “Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers” (1996), and several rebranded continuation series, including “Power Rangers Zeo” (the fourth season, which ran for 50 episodes in 1996); “Power Rangers Turbo” (the fifth season, which ran for 45 episodes in 1997); “Power Rangers in Space” (the sixth season, which ran for 43 episodes in 1998); and many, many more.
[‘Spider-Man 2’ vs. ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’: What Raimi Got Right That Webb Got Wrong]
But aside from is myriad TV iterations and discount toys, “MMPR” has also become notorious for the "Power Rangers Curse," which has seen several of those associated with the shows suffer sad fates off screen. Among them:
—Skylar Deleon, the actor who played Roger in the original series episode, “Second Chance” (1994), was charged with the 2004 murders of Long beach residents Tom and Jackie Hawks. He was convicted and sentenced to death in April 2009.
—Eric Frank, the brother of series regular Jason David Frank (who played Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, the original White Ranger and the White Ninja Ranger) and who had a guest star appearance as David Trueheart in “Power Rangers Zeo,” died of a heart illness at the age of 29 in April 2001.
—Richard Genelle, the actor who played Ernie, the owner of the Youth Center and occasional advisor to the Power Rangers, from the original series through “Power Rangers: Turbo,” left the show to concentrate on losing weight and quitting smoking. He died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in 2008.
—Bob Manahan, the actor who voiced Zordon, the Power Rangers’ mentor, died of a heart attack at the age of 44 in June 2000.
—Thuy Thang, the actress who played the Trini Kwan (the Yellow Ranger) in the first two seasons of the original series, died in a car crash at the age of 27 in Sept. 2001.
[‘Jurassic Park’ Five Film Facts: Are Those Raptors or Guys in Monster Suits?]
“I’ve never heard there’s a curse,” Yost told Yahoo. “But obviously anyone who’s stepping into the role of a Power Ranger — I just hope that they realize how exciting that is and the impact they will have on many people’s lives throughout the world and do their best to portray a good superhero.”
The original series also ended up conjuring some bad vibes when Thang, Austin St. John (the original Red Ranger) and Walter Emanuel Jones (the original Black Ranger) just up and left the show after the second season over a pay dispute. This broke the hearts of many fans… and was regarded by more than a few as an absurd situation, with Michael McCollor at Smosh pointing out that a job “literally consisting of pouring smoothies on Bulk and Skull and pretending to talk to a giant head in a tube” deserved to be paid in simply “donuts and Olive Garden gift certificates.”
Theater people know you don’t say “Macbeth” in a theater, ‘cause it’s all sorts of bad luck. As Shakespeare’s tragedy is often referred to as “The Scottish Play,” maybe the producers of the new “MMPR” feature should find a way to make the cast and crew never utter the actual title of the movie they’re making. “The Skittles Players,” anyone?
Marisa Okano contributed to this report.

Power Rangers Movie Loses Roberto Orci
The upcoming ‘Power Rangers’ movie reboot has been hit by an unexpected setback after executive producer Roberto Orci dropped out of the project due to scheduling issues.
The writer-turned-director was due to oversee the script as well as exec produce the film for Lionsgate, but has pulled out to focus on his directorial debut ‘Star Trek 3’ instead.
Deadline reports that Orci’s departure won’t affect the release date of ‘Power Rangers’, a reinvention of the popular ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ TV show that debuted in the 1990s, with the film still slated to be released on 22 July, 2016.
- Matt Smith Joins Zombie Film - Doctor Strange Set For 2016 Release - Latest Bond 24 Rumours
41-year-old Orci has become a major player in Hollywood over recent years, having co-written studio hits ‘Mission: Impossible III’, ‘Transformers’, and ‘Star Trek’ with his former writing partner Alex Kurtzman, before going solo earlier this year.
He’s due to direct the next ‘Star Trek’ film for 2016 taking over the reins from JJ Abrams who remains on board as producer. Not all ‘Trek’ fans were happy with Orci’s appointment after he took the brunt of the blame for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, with the Orci-scripted sequel being voted worst ‘Star Trek’ film ever at a Las Vegas convention last year, despite it being a box office smash.
He took to fan site Trekmovie.com to defend his film after it published an editorial feature titled: “Star Trek is broken — here are ideas on how to fix it.”
He jumped into the comments to say: “Two biggest Star Treks in a row with best reviews is hardly a description of “broken.” And frankly, your tone and attidude [sic] make it hard for me to listen to what might otherwise be decent notions to pursue in the future. Sorry, Joseph. As I love to say, there is a reason why I get to write the movies, and you don’t.”
The ‘Power Rangers’ movie doesn’t have a cast attached yet, but the story is expected to follow the template of the original series which ran from 1993-1996, which saw a group of high school kids imbued with the power to pilot huge assault robots called Zords in order to take on gigantic foes.
Think ‘Transformers’ vs ‘Godzilla’ and you’re on the right track.

'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' Reboot: Can It Dodge the 'MMPR' Curse?
"Go Go Power Rangers!"
More than two decades after its debut on television, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" lives again, this time via a live-action cinematic reboot with franchise aspirations.
Details are scant about the revamped Power Rangers. Today's announcement by Lionsgate and "MMPR" producer Haim Saban didn't have a timetable for the movie remake, a director, writer, or cast. About all we know, per the press release, is "the new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world."
Presumably, the new film will also reboot lagging merchandise sales, too.
You might be surprised it took Lionsgate and producer Haim Saban this long to get with the program, considering Hollywood's feeding frenzy over reinveting old properties. But the Power Rangers don't have a proven track record on the big screen. Their first cinematic go-round, 1995's "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie," was hardly a blockbuster with $66 million worldwide; while the 1997 follow-up, "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," was a brightly colored bomb, grossing just $9.6 million worldwide.
David Yost, arguably the most prolific Power Ranger as Billy Cranston (the Blue Ranger), told Yahoo Movies during a phone call on Wednesday that he’s excited Saban went with the “Hunger Games” studio. "They obviously have a proven track record. And I will be very excited to see what they do with the franchise."
Producers no doubt hope fans remember the TV incarnations more fondly.
The franchise-launching original, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers," followed its sextet of young heroes, who had the ability to "morph" into costumed (and color-coordinated) warriors, as they battled a series of alien baddies. Utilizing stock footage from the Japanese television show "Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger" (1992-93), the series almost immediately became a worldwide sensation (and spawned an extremely lucrative merchandising line), and is today considered a prominent piece of '90s pop culture.
The original series ran for 145 episodes over the course of three seasons on Fox Kids from Aug. 28, 1993 to Nov. 27, 1995. There was a 10-episode spinoff miniseries, "Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers" (1996), and several rebranded continuation series, including "Power Rangers Zeo" (the fourth season, which ran for 50 episodes in 1996); "Power Rangers Turbo" (the fifth season, which ran for 45 episodes in 1997); "Power Rangers in Space" (the sixth season, which ran for 43 episodes in 1998); and many, many more.

But aside from is myriad TV iterations and discount toys, "MMPR" has also become notorious for the "Power Rangers Curse," which has seen several of those associated with the shows suffer sad fates off screen. Among them:
—Skylar Deleon, the actor who played Roger in the original series episode, "Second Chance" (1994), was charged with the 2004 murders of Long beach residents Tom and Jackie Hawks. He was convicted and sentenced to death in April 2009.
—Eric Frank, the brother of series regular Jason David Frank (who played Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, the original White Ranger and the White Ninja Ranger) and who had a guest star appearance as David Trueheart in "Power Rangers Zeo," died of a heart illness at the age of 29 in April 2001.
—Richard Genelle, the actor who played Ernie, the owner of the Youth Center and occasional advisor to the Power Rangers, from the original series through "Power Rangers: Turbo," left the show to concentrate on losing weight and quitting smoking. He died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in 2008.
—Bob Manahan, the actor who voiced Zordon, the Power Rangers' mentor, died of a heart attack at the age of 44 in June 2000.
“I’ve never heard there’s a curse," Yost told Yahoo. "But obviously anyone who’s stepping into the role of a Power Ranger — I just hope that they realize how exciting that is and the impact they will have on many people’s lives throughout the world and do their best to portray a good superhero."
The original series also ended up conjuring some bad vibes when Thang, Austin St. John (the original Red Ranger) and Walter Emanuel Jones (the original Black Ranger) just up and left the show after the second season over a pay dispute. This broke the hearts of many fans... and was regarded by more than a few as an absurd situation, with Michael McCollor at Smosh pointing out that a job "literally consisting of pouring smoothies on Bulk and Skull and pretending to talk to a giant head in a tube" deserved to be paid in simply "donuts and Olive Garden gift certificates."
Theater people know you don't say "Macbeth" in a theater, 'cause it's all sorts of bad luck. As Shakespeare's tragedy is often referred to as "The Scottish Play," maybe the producers of the new "MMPR" feature should find a way to make the cast and crew never utter the actual title of the movie they're making. "The Skittles Players," anyone?
Marisa Okano contributed to this report.

'Power Rangers' Preview Clip: Test Drive is More Than a Little Rocky for Mighty Morpher In Training
Alpha 5 (voiced by Bill Hader) in new clip from ‘Power Rangers’ (Lionsgate)
As any parent knows, it’s nerve-wracking to watch your teenager take his or her first solo spin in the family vehicle. Now just imagine if your fledgling Dale Earnhardt Jr. was piloting a giant robot instead of a souped-up sedan. That’s why kids will chuckle — and adults will cringe — at the just-released clip from Power Rangers (watch it below), the upcoming big-screen reboot of the popular kiddie franchise, which has been mightily morphin’ through multiple TV and film incarnations since 1993.
youtube
The ranger behind the wheel of this multi-legged metal wrecking machine is Zack, a.k.a. the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin). He’s one of five teens recruited to battle Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) by suiting up in super-cool power suits and showing off some serious martial arts training. But first, they’ve got to master the new toys at their disposal, a learning process aided by robot Alpha 5 (voiced by Bill Hader), who’s tasked with whipping this new crew of Power Rangers into fighting shape. Based on Zack’s out-of-control test drive, poor Alpha 5’s got a lot of work on his hands.

Bryan Cranston Explains the 'Power Rangers' Movie to a Confused Larry King
As an 82-year-old man, it’s no surprise that Larry King would find Power Rangers to be something of a mystery. When upcoming Larry King Now guest Bryan Cranston valiantly attempts to explain his character, Zordon, and the rest of the Power Rangers’ world to his host in the preview clip above, King’s mispronunciation of “Zorda” makes us think it all may not quite have sunk in.
“He’s a disembodied human being with his spirit in the ether world; he’s not a physical human,” said Cranston of Zordon. Reacting to King’s blank stare, the actor jovially continued, “I know that’s hard to explain. But with therapy, we’ll get through it.”

For those as unfamiliar with the iconic ’90s show — and the 2017 movie it’s spawning — as King is, Zordon is the floating head that brings the Power Rangers together to fight crime. Cranston reveals to King he actually has a history with the franchise: He dubbed the audio of monsters on the original show so often that the writers named a character after him — Billy Cranston, the Blue Ranger. In the movie, that role goes to RJ Cyler, joined by Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G. as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, the main villain.
“There’s red, and blue, and black, and yellow, and green. We keep it in primary colors, Larry,” explained Cranston. Based on teaser photos, the Pink Ranger joins the squad instead of the Green Ranger for the big-screen adventure. However, the Green Ranger does appear in the TV show, often as an antagonist, but it’s anyone’s guess whether Cranston simply made a mistake or unintentionally revealed the return of the Green Ranger. We’ll all just have to wait to find out when Power Rangers arrives in theaters on March 24, 2017.

'Power Rangers': Your First Look at the Team's New Suits
By Shirley Li, Entertainment Weekly
Later, Lycra!
When the Power Rangers revival morphs into theaters, the five teenagers with attitude won’t be wearing the original series’ campy costumes to battle Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). Instead, the new cast — singer Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy — will don translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.
The sartorial update may look radical, but the outfits are visual throwbacks to the franchise’s long-running mythology. “The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) says. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
Related: 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers': Where are they now? 'Power Rangers': See Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa in upcoming reboot 'Power Rangers' first look: Get a sneak peek at the new teenagers with attitude
The spandex-free makeover also helps set the film apart from other big-screen franchises. “It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) admits. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Fans like the Yellow Ranger herself. “It’s the coolest costume ever,” Becky G says. “I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.”
For a closer look at the new suits, pick up Entertainment Weekly issue #1414, on newsstands Friday or available here.
