The 5 most amazing things we learned at the Fantastic Beasts fan event
David Heyman, David Yates, JK Rowling, Katherine Waterston, Eddie Redmayne, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler – Credit: Warner Bros.
By Chris Edwards
J.K. Rowling has given fans of the Wizarding World plenty of reasons to be excited about ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’.
During the Warner Bros. global fan event on Thursday, the best-selling ‘Harry Potter’ author delivered some major news regarding character appearances and the future of the franchise. They even showed the first ten minutes of the film, and the cinema full of wand-wielding fanatics could barely contain themselves as surprises were reeled off one after another.
Here are some of the most exciting ones.
1. Fantastic Beasts will be a five-film franchise
That’s right. Five. Despite initial thoughts that it would be a trilogy, Rowling has now stated that there will be five ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films.
J.K. Rowling herself made a special appearance at the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them global fan event and dropped some MAJOR news. #fantasticbeasts #fantasticbeastslive #iwanttobeawizard #imaxfantasticbeasts #harrypotter #wizard #wizards #jkrowling #eddieredmayne

The news even came as a surprise to the cast members, including Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler, who were visibly shocked.
“I’ve now done the plotting properly, so we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five movies,” said Rowling. “We always knew that there would be more than one.”
2. The second film will be set in another global capital city
Also present was director David Yates, who confirmed that the sequel to ‘Fantastic Beasts’ (already scheduled for release in 2018) will see Newt Scamander (Redmayne) travel to a different major city.

With the UK and now the US already ticked off, maybe we’ll be off to Norway to meet Norberta the dragon’s parents or something.
3. A young Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald make appearances in the film
Being set in 1926 New York, many may be wondering how the events in Fantastic Beasts are linked to the original Harry Potter films, or if they’re connected at all.
Well, in a reveal that encouraged a room full of excited whoops, Yates confirmed that Dumbledore appears in a “wonderful scene” with Colin Farrell and Eddie Redmayne. Grindelwald, meanwhile, features in the background, but will become a more prominent part of the story as it moves forward.
4. J.K. Rowling has already written the script for a sequel

The first film isn’t even out yet, but that doesn’t stop fans snooping around for juicy bits of information regarding a sequel.
Well, they’ll be pleased to know that Rowling has already finished the script for the second film, and according to Yates, it’s just as magical as the first, but very different.
5. The beginning of the film is darker and there’s a lot to establish
To top the event off, they showed the first ten minutes of the film and it immediately established a darker, grittier tone than the original franchise.
Right from the beginning it’s clear to see the huge scale of story they’re building and why it’s necessary to spread it over numerous sequels. We meet Newt Scamander, Percival Graves (Farrell), Porptentina Goldstein (Waterston), Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) and Jacob Kowalksi (Dan Fogler) all in quick succession.
It’s a lot to get through, but it gives us an idea of how their paths intertwine and begin to shape the latest Wizarding World saga.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ is coming to cinemas on 18 November.

'Logan' Shares Hints in New Photos, Now Including Stephen Merchant as... (Updated)
Little by little, the mystery around the third — and presumably final for Hugh Jackman — Wolverine film is lifting. First, we learned in tweets from Jackman and director James Mangold that the movie would be called Logan, and saw the first poster art. That was followed by Instagram posts that announced in stark black-and-white images that the film would take advantage of its R rating to go for more images of graphic violence and a grittier feel. After that, a first look at baddie "Pierce" (played by Narcos' Boyd Holbrook). As more images emerge leading up to Logan's March 3, 2017, release date, we'll add them to the slideshow here.
Tumblr media
Stephen Merchant’s Role Revealed?
Stephen Merchant's role in "Logan" officially remains unknown, but this photo of the actor taken and tweeted by director James Mangold — with a bald head, pasty complexion, and foreboding stare — fuels speculation he'll be playing Caliban, a rogue mutant who was briefly featured in "X-Men: Apocalypse." His ties to Boyd Holbrook's villain Donald Pierce remain a mystery. (Photo: @mang0ld/Twitter)
Tumblr media
Let the Caliban-ter Begin
As if director James Mangold's image of Stephen Merchant wasn't creepy enough, the actor posted an even more unnerving self-portrait to Instagram (captioned "How I Spent My Summer"), in which his (rumored-to-be-Caliban) baddie looks like a mutant desperado, lurking in the shadows of a shot-up shack. (Photo: stephenmerchant/Instagram)

’62’ Pick-up
Last week's "Prom" photo featured a sign indicating that at least some of "Logan" would take place in El Paso, Texas — a notion now all but confirmed by this shot of a highway sign, captioned '62.' (Photo: wponx/Instagram)

Stall Tactics
This Logan tease, captioned ‘Mutants,’ shows a bathroom stall with a cryptic message — “Where Are All The Mutants?” — scrawled on it. Speculation continues that Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine will be set in a dystopian future where superpowered mutants have been rendered an endangered species — if not eradicated — and where Logan operates as something of an aged, power-deficient nomad. Welcome to El Paso
The sign in the photo labeled 'Prom' on the movie's Instagram page seems to ID the West Texas town as one spot where the action is — and spurred speculation that white-suited gent might be comic-book villain Arcade. (Photo: wponx/Instagram)

Meet the Bad Guy
Here's the first image of Boyd Holbrook's character, with the one-word caption "Pierce." This appears to confirm that Holbrook (best known for Netflix series Narcos) will be playing 1980s Marvel Comics villain Donald Pierce, described by Collider as "a mutant-hating genocidal maniac." Reservation Road?

Aviso

The Old Professor
Charles Xavier, mentor of the X-Men, was an old man in the first film; in this new image, Patrick Stewart's character is approaching ancient. (Photo: wponx/Instagram)

Read It and Weep for Logan
Page two of the 'Logan' screenplay, tweeted out by Mangold, describes an aging, depressed Wolverine: "He’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller.” (Photo: wponx/Instagram)
