Jeanne du Barry - 2023
Today I watched "Jeanne du Barry" about the Rococo era - the times of Louis XV. At one time, Ludovic was played in film adaptations by John Barrymore and Jean Marais. Now it was Johnny Depp.

What can I say… quite a sad sight. It's not just about the casting of actors, which led to the fact that only Depp looked the most adequate to the historical prototype.

Now it has become almost bad manners to discuss the appearance of actors, although, it would seem, what could be more important for such a visual field of art as cinema? But no, here the requirements have gone down to the “school theater” mark. I won't risk talking about it so as not to have been "canceled" if, due to my poor command of the English language, I inadvertently blurt out something that is unacceptable by the standards of political correctness. But, damn it, why not add more suspense into the plot? Wasn't it possible to add more action, add multi-storey and logical intrigues, with which the courtiers of Versailles so amused themselves from idleness? What I saw is characterized by one epithet: despondency. And even the great Depp does not pull the plot out of the quagmire. It's impossible to get it out of there. And if we add to this an inappropriate, exaggerated caricature (daughters of Louis, for example), then we get an even more sad spectacle. In general, of course, it cannot be said that the film is categorically bad. But I can't even call it good.

I apologize for grammatical, syntactical, stylistic and punctuation errors.

The Batman (2022)
Psychoanalyzation of Batman and the Riddler
This movie is about the corrupt officials running the crime ridden city of Gotham. Batman is trying to uncover it all, as the Riddler brings everything into public attention. He wants to show the truth of the lying, murder, and corruption that is behind public officials in their city. He wants them to pay for their sins, as he says. Batman wants to protect the city from crime, be a figure to scare it away–he stands for justice. They both want to stand for justice, unmasking the truth, and bringing vengeance–something good. They do this through secret identities, personas, scare tactics, violence, and in the riddlers case murder. In that way, Batman and the riddler both represent something so similar yet slightly different.
Bruce Wayne – a millionaire's son, parents murdered on the street, and from a young age was forced to take on the responsibility of being a Wayne. Carrying a family legacy, being part of the big public eye, businesses, etc. When he took on the role of being Batman, it was a subconscious comfort for him. Something more therapeutic than realized. It became his main identity, his life. “Two years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal,” he says.
Bruce Wayne is secluded, wasn’t seen often. Growing up in such a dark place, no father, no mother, no support other than money–you’re bound to be this depressive figure. It’s an interesting depiction of depression, the loss of motivation to work, to follow those forced schedules that only drain you. Like Alfred tells him, “you have to keep up appearances, you’re still a Wayne. Depression isn’t noticed in someone like this. Growing up with so much fear, in a city like this, he developed a complex. This conversation he has with Alfred, about the Wayne family legacy and what he’s doing; “I don’t care about that. Any of that,” he says.
“You don’t care about your family’s legacy?”
“What I'm doing is my family's legacy. If I can't change things here, if I can't have an effect, then I don’t care what happens to me.” He’s enraptured in his life as Batman, but he believes it’s what is needed. His family were public officials, trying to change the city for the better–that’s what he wants as well. It’s a cycle; Losing his parents at a young age → becoming an orphan, not having a healthy childhood with key protections → learning to fight fear on his own → protecting other people from danger to feel complete → still afraid, but subconsciously unaware and trying to fight it with public vigilance and inflicting fear. “Fear is a tool.”
The riddler has a better read on Batman then is really noted by Batman’s actual character. Perhaps he did know these things, just suppressed it, or perhaps it was all subconscious. Both the Riddler and Batman grew up as orphans. The difference is one was poor, and one was very privileged. The similarities they carried sparked the Riddlers' interest in him. He said that he was inspired by Batman; “you showed me all it takes is fear and a little focused violence–you inspired me.” Batman tries to avoid the realization his actions of trying to make things better inspired terrorism and the birth of a criminal who destroyed the city, it angers him. But eventually, he realizes what he needed to do differently. It only took the near death of a father-figure, falling in love then losing that love, a demolished city, and a few crazy criminals to make him say, “vengeance won’t change the past.”
Unlike Batman, the Riddler is actually aware of the similarities in their psyche, and believes they are almost the same. “Your mask is amazing. I wish you could of seen me in mine. Ain’t it funny? All everyone wants to do is unmask you, but they’re missing the point. You and I both know I’m looking at the real you right now.” He believes that he can read him, connect to them on a level of their actions and trauma. He sees the similarity between them. Batman, on the other hand, refuses to see it that way. He recognizes that yes, they were both orphans, both grew up in a melancholic, crime ridden city, and developed trauma because they were never properly taken care of. Alongside that, the truth of his fathers death being revealed is also making him come to his own reality. But if he has to face that reality, that everything he has devoted his life, his coping to for the past 2 years was pretty much a huge infringement, he has to reevaluate everything he was afraid of.
Edward Nashton, the Riddler, is a character shaped by systemic neglect and the corruption of Gotham City. Unlike Batman, whose trauma stems from the privileged position of a very wealthy orphan, the riddler represents the unseen stuffing masses of people of Gotham. He verbalates this anger and disparity with his very emotionally charged monologues:
“Do you know what being an orphan is? It's thirty kids to a room, twelve year olds and already a drophead, numbing the pain. You wake up screaming with rats chewing your fingers, and every winter one of the babies dies because it's so cold. But, oh no! Let's talk about the billionaire with the lying, dead daddy because at least money makes it go down easy, doesn't it? Bruce Wayne.”
The Riddler discreetly confronts the hypocrisy of Gotham's social and societal hierarchy. His hatred towards Bruce Wayne is just personal jealousy—it's ideological. He sees Bruce Wanye as a symbol of the privileged elite who willingly remain ignorant to the suffering of those less fortunate than others. Unlike Batman, the Riddler has no moral code to limit his actions. His belief in vengeance is absolute which leads him to enact what he sees as justice through sadistic and almost theatrical murders. The quote, “It can be cruel, poetic, or blind. But when it is denied, it's your violence you may find.” really encapsulates his perspective that justice is an obligation and when it's absent, chaos and discretion are the only recourse.
Despite their big ideological differences, the Riddler and Batman share a lot of disturbing similarities: they are both productions of Gothams’ corruption, both operate in the shadows, and both seek to expose the city's darkest and most corrupt secrets. The Riddler takes Batman's methods to an extreme, demonstrating how close the line between villain and hero can be. One of the most chilling moments in the film is when the Riddler expresses admiration for Batman, claiming he was inspired by him: “You showed me what was possible. You showed me all it takes is fear and a little focused violence. You inspired me!” This statement forces Batman to confront the possible consequences of his actions. His presence in Gotham, meant to be a force of good and a beacon of hope, has bred figures such as the Riddler, who takes his ideology and distorts it into something more sinister.
While Batman is known to only work alone, he does surround himself with allies but he keeps them at arm's length, while the Riddler is defined by his isolation. He is a man who has spent his whole life feeling invisible, his pain is ignored by the very system he tries to dismantle. His belief in his cause is so strong that he assumes Batman will join him in his big plan and mission, further emphasizing his detachment of reality and his furtherment into delusion. In his final monologue he says: “Oh, if only you knew how long I've been waiting for this day, for this moment. I've been inisale my whole life. I guess I Won't be anymore, will I? They remember me now. They'll remember both of us.” This moment really cements the Riddler as a tragic figure. His entire life has been consumed by the needs for recognition, and in his mind, his grand plan has finally achieved that. He doesn't want to be remembered—he wants to be understood.
The Riddler serves as a reminder of gothams failures. Where Batman chooses to fight against corruption while adhering to a strict moral code, the Riddler embraces the city's darkness. He forces both Batman and the audience to confront the uncomfortable truths about systemic inequality. In the end, the Riddler stands alone, not because of his lack of purpose, but because his means of achieving justice are too extreme even for Gothams dark savior.
By the end of the movie Batman won the battle, but the Riddlers message still stands—justice in Gotham is not just about vengeance; it's about understanding who is allowed to suffer and why

[Major spoilers, CW violence, eye trauma, attempted child prostitution (not being trafficked by others, but trying to solicit out of poverty--not included in the movie?), attempted rape mention (or rather, its absence?), this is not a review, this is me liveblogging and screeching incomprehensibly, do not expect any intelligent takes here.]
Oh, this is definitely manga Andre, I saw him and was just reaching towards the screen, like, "ANDREEEEEEE!" It's so over.
I'm GONNA CRY. Yeah, the opening is a very modern song and nothing will compare to the classic, BUT, I LOVE THAT IT'S FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVES? The whole quartet!
I am actually squealing like every two seconds in the opening, I AM NOT THIS WOMAN. I AM NOT THIS GIRL. I DO NOT SHRIEK LIKE A FANGIRL, what has RoV done?!
……………… OH MY GOD THE BASTILLE DAY SEGMENT ANIMATES THE ARTWORK ANDRE EMBRACING OSCAR IN THE FIRE WHILE SHE CARRIES THE FLAG!!!
BABY OSCAR AND ANDRE ARE SO CUTE!!!!
Phewww, I knew they'd have to skip over a lot, but man, we don't even see child Marie here, we jump ahead to 14 year old Marie, gloss over the Mme du Barry rivalry (fair, it would've taken up too much time and is easily the most famous part of her early life), and oh, hi, Fersen. The masquerade is gorgeous, the songs are fun (BUT I do wish French was used, if any language other than Japanese, but minor quibble), I love angry judgmental Oscar, pffft.
The settings are breathtaking!
I was worried for a second they would somehow skip Oscar in the oriental peacock dress at the ball, because it seemed almost like they were going to jump ahead to her understanindg and experiencing ~womanly feelings~ for the very first time--but they didn't!
ALSO, this is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen in my entire life, the Art Nouveau-inspired sequence, the little music box, the--
ANDREEEEE, I missed seeing him, he didn't get enough scenes, nearly the first hour and we mostly just got childhood sparring, him looking all fond whenever Oscar does anything, that moment where he swears to give his life for her the way she tried to her life for his, and that really funny scene where he and Fersen are cast out because Oscar needs to be undressed, ffff.
This movie is almost like a fancy music video, but I'm not complaining too much, PFFT, it's pretty and conveys things without dragging them out, but I do wish we got more exciting scenes (the runaway horse incident was very good!)….
Also the scenes of the impoverished commoners in between the glitz and glam of the nobles' excess was…
A-aw, they skipped the Black Knight stuff [that's fair, it was very 70's shoujo and not historical, so it's fine if it left, but it was still fun…], so Bernard, instead of being the one to hurt Andre, saves him?!
Andre's vision loss got tied into the riot. I wish we heard Oscar yell at them that he isn't a noble when they were attacking him, but she didn't? And Fersen didn't show up and we didn't hear Oscar call him "my Andre" and both he and her realize her feelings have changed?
Andre's immediate glow-up when he loses an eye and switches to an emo haircut, pfft--I kid, I kid, but he just immediately becomes THE Andre after that.
Oscar gradually becoming more radicalized by seeing the plight of the commoners and hearing from her friends…
Oscar reading Rousseau.
I forgot the incident with the little boy stealing? Was that from the manga? I remember there was an incident with a kid, but I forget what it was. was somehow immediately expecting Rosalie adorably and pathetically attempting to sell herself while completely terrified and embarrassed; she's……….. only 12………. it's depressing, actually, Oscar laughs because Rosalie thought she was a man, but it's horrifying to her too that a young girl like her even thought of doing such a thing.
Maybe this adaptation censored it. Hmm, did the old anime do that? I haven't reached Rosalie there yet.
AAAAH, the Company B boys!!!!! I missed them, even if they're gonna be such rotten brats when she first meets them (for good reason, they're starving, hungry, oppressed, and smuggling arms just to provide the most basic necessities for their families)…….
Yeah, no, a defeat like that would either make you bear a lifelong grudge or make you fall madly in love or both (so glad Alain just falls in love.)
Okay, sadly, I think this movie censors a lot of things, Alain's attempts to ~put Oscar in her place~ included threatening to rape her in the manga. While she's tied up. It's not found here at all! Oscar played it cool the whole time and acted calm, until she was alone [nearly--Andre was with her then] and broke down, crying for her mother. It was such a rare, painfully vulnerable Oscar moment, I wish we got to see it, even if I get not wanting to have such rape-y scenes in a modern anime, especially as Alain becomes a better person, but man… this and innocent young Rosalie trying to sell herself showed how dangerous the situations were, wish we saw that, but okay.
Oscar's life being toyed with. Live as a man and succeed me in the Royal Guard! Marry a man and produce a strong heir! Oscar starts drinking brandy heavily…
I don't know why, but I was happy the violin snapping scene was kept in, expected it while watching her trying to tune it.
Andre, no. Andre, NO. Stupid, stupid idea. Andre officially too impressionable for novels, please take The New Heloise away from him.
Oscar and Andre aren't as religious as in the manga, I wanted to see Oscar (stupidly) ask God to smite her before the violin's string snapped on her and she had to whine rather pathetically about it. It was both sad and funny. It was very human? I also wish we got Andre's messed-up little prayer. "Banish me to Hell and send the woman I love to the gardens." "God, please watch over me as I walk the path of human stupidity." Andreeee…
Oh, he still asks her if she's prayed before giving her the (POISONED) wine. Happy that's left in, at least. Stupid Andre. Love him to bits and pieces, but he does some stupid, stupid things, but it's what makes the RoV characters so human.
Andre does not come close to forcing himself on Oscar, but his song's sure about his loss of control. I don't mind removing this bit so much, it reflects badly on Andre, but still kiiiinda annoyed we're skipping a lot. Well, one Andre-being-incredibly-stupid moment is enough, perhaps.
Ooh, the detail of his fingernails cutting into the palm of his skin was very nice, I literally have never seen that depicted in animation before. Very nice addition.
I'm so happy the Company B boys' explanations for why they sold their weapons was kept in and Oscar's reaction… even if the manga one was more powerful to me, it's still a heartbreaking scene.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE FOR KEEPING IN OSCAR JUST SLAPPING THE COMPANY B BOYS, I'M DEAD. SMACKSMACKSMACK, everyone gets slapped, it's hilarious.
The more you humble yourself, the more God honours you, right?
I love how moved the boys are by her speech and reasoning for not punishing them, although she has the authority to, even if Alain is the slowest to accept her.
(Also, it's so strange hearing Oscar cry, she's usually so incredibly stoic. Literally everyone else cries more than her, ffff, except the king. Fersen usually holds it back too, he's got maybe two scenes where he sheds tears. Manga Andre's very emotionally volatile, easily cries the most.)
It's late, so I'll watch the remaining forty or so minutes tomorrow!

It: Movie Review
Genre: Horror
Year of Release: 2017
Summary:
Seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, are about to face their worst nightmare -- an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town's children. Banding together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise.
Rating: 9/10
Review:
I'll forever love anything by Stephen King, but It might be my favourite. I loved the mini series so when the films were announced, I was beyond excited. I even got my mother to watch the film, and she doesn't like horrors, but she liked this film! It doesn’t just feel like a horror movie, it feels like a coming of age film, it’s entertaining and wonderful to watch. I love Pennywise, probably one of my favourite horror movie characters ever.
(Don't take these little reviews too seriously - they're just a bit of fun)

Don't get me wrong, there's something fascinating about seeing the way a creator's mind works, and seeing King's vision for some of his stories is kind of...mental?

I wonder if it was around the time the confetti started raining, or the bushes began to move.

I finished the alien movies so here is my ranking and opinions that nobody asked for
1: Aliens (1986)
10/10
RAAAHHHHH This movie was so good on so many levels. The attention to detail, the acting, the visuals, and the little dashes of comedy made this movie so fun to watch. I was on the edge of my seat watching this movie. The twists in this movie had me SHOCKED and the emotional moments between the characters had me in tears. The ending made me so emotional, if you’ve watched it you know which part I’m talking about. This is without a doubt my favorite in the franchise.
2: Alien (1979)
9/10
Another great movie. I love the visuals and the absolutely ICONIC scenes (iykyk). Ripley looked SO GOOD in this movie, I cannot stress that enough. Ripley’s relationship with her cat, Jones, reminded me of how I am with my cat. I was rooting for the cat the whole time tbh. This movie was so memorable and engaging. I do have some questions about WHY THE HELL miners were acting like astronauts, but whatever. Also, who the hell in the costume department gave Sigourney Weaver that small ass pair of underwear??? It was like she was wearing floss.
3: Alien 3 (1992)
6/10
I don’t even know where to begin with this movie. Compared to the first two movies this is absolute rubbish. There were so many inconsistencies in the plot, the CGI was somehow worse than the 1979 movie, and there was a scene where someone tried to rape Ripley. It was entertaining at times and it is important to the story, but there were so many things that could have been done differently to make the movie better. It had potential. There were times where I had no idea what was going on and I was so confused by what was happening. There were moments when my face only looked like this, 🤨.
4) Alien: Resurrection (1997)
4/10
Why, just why. This was even more unnecessary than the third movie. There was no need for all this. Nothing made sense at all, and it was clearly a last ditch effort to make money off of a finished franchise. The action was entertaining at times but not enough to make me want to rewatch it ever again. I want that 1 hour and 49 minutes of my life back.
Anyway Ellen Ripley is fine asf and yall need to stop sleeping on her. Watch the first two movies you won’t regret it.
Also, this is not shame anyone who enjoys the final two movies, this is just how I feel about them.

Okay so another rant cause why not. Yesterday I tried to convince this guy friend that he should watch little miss sunshine. Like I didn’t force it on him I just tried to tell him of the beautiful storyline and characters. He just said it seems like a “stupid romance movie” and a “girlie movie”. I immediately wanted to cringe and toss him out of a window but still I actually managed to convince him to watch it. He saw literally less than a minute before turning it off and saying it wasn’t “deep enough” for him. Not deep enough? I actually wanted to scream at him and push him into an active volcano.
Anyway, watch little miss sunshine if you haven’t already.

With the Oscars this weekend, I want to take a quick minute to talk about why I loved the film Anora. There’s magic in how it catches you in its whirlwind and invites you to dream alongside Anora. It dares you to believe that maybe someone like her - so strong willed yet young and naive as a sex worker - could have a happy ending. And as the film progresses and we fight our perceptions of who we’re seeing and what their motives are, the ending comes like the hardest burst bubble.
I saw someone say that Anora is ‘emotionally repressed’ and that’s what the ending is about. That’s not how I see it. I think the ending is just the culmination of reality hitting all of us, like a smack in the face. Ani let herself believe things could be different and she then fought, tooth and nail, for herself. She didn’t win, though. The weight of reality collapsed in on her in the end. And so I think the film is a tragedy as much as it is a comedy, with the perfect contrast of the beauty and cruelty of life and its heartaches, in a zany little whirlwind that is as fun and sexy as it is devastating.

You know how one should never trust the way certain trailers advertise an animated film?
Yeah, don't let the "silly" vibes from Transformers One fool you. This is hands down one of the most lovely surprises, animation wise, I've seen in 2024, overall. They make Optimus & Megatron's foundation of friendship feel genuinely organic, which is all the more heartbreaking seeing it go down the inevitable drain. That entire third act alone cements it not only as a great origin story for Autobots VS Decepticons, but becoming unquestionably my new favorite Transformers film, too.
GO SEE IT. DON'T LET THIS SHIT FLOP! WE NEED MORE STUFF LIKE IT!

Spaceman (2024, March; Netflix)

Why does Hanuš the space-spider never call Jakub the Czech cosmonaut, Jakub? And Hanuš instead keeps calling Jakub "skinny man"? I don't protest this about the movie. No, I think I love it.
Also I love how all the dialogue feels translated. As if it's not natively written in English. The post-neo-Soviet vibe, it fits the narrative so well.
In fact I think I'd love watching the movie with Czech audio and English subtitles. I wonder if that's possible... I suppose it's subtle but it would require me hunting for the Czech audio, which I'm 99% sure exists.
I also love the movie's subtext-dialogue about the notions of love, relationship, loneliness, attachment, self-centeredness, touch, beginning & end, cosmology, and so on and so forth.
So much to think about. It's like, I myself had to watch this in a couple of sittings, and I just had to watch it like two, three times to catch what I want to catch out of it...

Ultimate actual mini review of Hitcher (1986)
Obsessive blond man psychologically tortures Ponyboy for a hour and a half
Great movie! Felt dread in the pit of my stomach/stressed but that’s as you should feel by design. There were some great shots cinematography wise - particularly the ending/credits. I also like how it’s selective in what it choses to show, where your brain fills in the rest.
God one of the best moments of this is when Jim looks into the car, blood falling on his sneakers and he stumbles back and throws up. You don’t need to see what he saw to understand or feel what you’re supposed to.
I love how it doesn’t over explain to the audience but at the same time I wish you explained a little because I want to know what the fuck John’s deal was. I have several theories but still. Same goes for Jim honestly as I first thought he was just a runaway kid with a stolen car and Chicago was a lie but then Chicago isn’t a lie but he doesn’t really act like ddjdkkdkdkd idk there’s a lot of interesting unknowns about him. I think I get it but do I?
Just proves it’s a good movie I guess, still thinking about it lol

80. Shampoo (Hal Ashby, 1975)
Another Hal Ashby “satire” that looks like a million bucks but has nothing to say. Like...I get it, these vapid LA elites only care about beauty and fucking, and election day is about cocktail parties and not voting, and none of them know a damn thing about what's going on in the world, but there's nothing here to suggest that the film knows what's going on in the world either. There's the specter of Nixon, but no indication as to what Nixon is supposed to represent. What should these people care about? What are they ignorant of? Rating: 6.8/10

I've been on a huge horror movie kick and I'm honestly considering just starting to rate them on here
That way I have an easy way to refer back to the films I enjoyed/scared me without having to actually, like, remember them
Cause my memory cannot be trusted. The second I finish a movie it's on the clock. At any moment it could be swallowed by the sands of my mind only to reemerge two years later in a random conversation about something completely unrelated
#my ramblings#the memory thing is Absolutely tied to my adhd. still annoying tho#i guess this kinda a warning for if you start seeing a ton of movie reviews#i might also go back andake mini entries for films i already watched#who knows. certainly not me.#horror movies
