some of my favorite things about Anora in no particular order (SPOILERS BELOW):
the goons, wow what all timer movie goons. concussed guy for goon of the year
when anora beats the shit out of those goons for a fifteen minute stretch and they get increasingly more afraid of her. comedy gold, just pitch perfect comedy treading the line between should-i-be-worried-for-her and the disarming buffoonery of the goons
ivan's mom stomping on the last step of the private jet stairs. her incredible houndstooth suit. every second of her on screen.
all of them throwing the pens at the annulment woman
ivan's dad dying laughing during the annulment as anora throws all of the moms shit on the ground
every parking in new york joke from the ticket in front of the courthouse to getting towed down on brighton beach
how the entire time, nobody pulls out a weapon, not once. and yet, the threat of violence and danger still lingers in the periphery because of the deftly constructed tension of the roving camera and contextually what we don't know about this family and the broader scope of ivan's world and the looming threat of the parents. how far can she push the goons until they get violent, and yet they never really do, but baker never lets you exhale that breath.
when they walked into tatianas..... like sean does his RESEARCH
also the t.A.T.u needle drop like i screamed
also the fight over driving or walking for five minutes in the cold. the new york specificity in this movie is pinpoint accurate, down to the mundane
the ending, her having a breakdown release of everything that had happened to her and how humiliated she was, but also how she thought she had gotten out and made a fairytale of her life. how using her body was the only power she has ever had, and how that was what she defaulted to with Igor in that last scene, but it was when he wanted to kiss her that the facade of power broke down and so did she. how she had to face her own humanity, and in that moment ask herself if she wanted to kiss him, because he was giving her perhaps her first real choice in a long time, and that opened a pathway to maybe questioning whether she truly wanted any of what had happened to her. maybe in that moment she realized that her body is not as powerful as she perhaps convinced herself it was. she was far more powerless than all her bravado and will probably always be powerless in the socioeconomic systems of the world that are built up around her. how disposable she was made to feel maybe for the first time, and how she thought she had built up that bravado and detached arrogance around herself so that she would never feel that way, but the feeling still seeped through nonetheless. all of that delivered wordlessly, in silence, buried under the falling white snow that will throw a white, pristine blanket over everything as if nothing significant had happened at all.
but also like igor, i too would fall in love with her almost instantly and tbh i did. rip to Ivan, anora i am hopelessly in love with you, and i would die for you.

Sean Baker and Mikey Madison on the look between Anora and Igor in the final scene of "Anora":
S: It might be the first time in the film where the character of Ani is actually seen and heard by another human being, and I think that's a different dynamic than the way that we've seen Ani with others throughout the entire film. And so I think that's a significant moment, it's a moment in which two human beings are actually communicating, whereas in the rest of the film there is a lot of miscommunication.
M: That moment is the longest amount of time that they have eye contact. I think Ani is constantly breaking his eye contact, he's looking at her and she'll notice but she looks away. And that's a moment where she allows herself to look, I think she's looking for something specific.

anora spoilers ahead but the way she is at her lowest point at the end of the movie and the audience has been literally running along with her and seeing her break down and the realization that she sees all of it as transactional and her entire life was put on hold for this because her life is so superficial and tedious it wasn’t even a life it was just surviving… and she knows that now and we have to leave her at her rock bottom with hope she gets back up

I went to see ANORA today and as the credits were ending this cusp-of-senior-citizen-aged Black woman, who was also alone and who was the only other person I heard audibly laughing, passed in front of me and started a conversation about the film with me. “That was a good movie, she was trying to be strong for so long and it was so hard. I felt her pain.”
and damn, beautiful lady in a stunningly sharp blazer, I am sure you did. I can only imagine the ways you related to this character, the ways this world has fucked you over and you’ve put up a strong front to navigate it. I am glad to have shared that post-movie moment with you.
“she should have kept that sable though!” Black women are always right.

watching anora a second time...
and what about the moment when Galina is telling Anora that she will ruin her life and destroy her family and friends’ lives and Igor is standing there watching with a look of terror on his face because he knows that Galina is talking to him too and she expects him to be the muscle that tears Anora’s life apart and all he wants is for Anora to get what she needs and move on with her life because he loves her so much already and could never hurt her. what about that?

Anora made me really sad because she is beautiful , she believed that piece of crap dude who was bullshit from the start (i believed they were something in the minute he died in the game but didn't get mad at her because abuse stories i guess... But well he wasn't an abuser but he was an asshole and too sad for me)

Spoilers but...
ok but can we acknowledge that Igor did technically assault Anora. she did not want to be held down or tied down and she wanted to leave.
I get that he liked her but he wasn't a good guy. and he was dangerous.

About Anora's ending, I completely agree. What the movie does so well in put you in Ani's shoes, so we can feel the frustration, the anger and just how unfairly she's treated by most of the people in the film, even if she puts up a tough exterior. It's all building up to that final moment, she needs to finally break down so she can hopefully build herself back up after the movie ends.
Something i want to add. I fully expected the film to end with her breaking down. Sean Baker doesn't really do 'happy endings' so I knew it wouldnt be that. And all the shots of Ani holding back tears, even when she was alone, i almost predicted it. But damn, I wasnt expecting someone to be there for her when she did. As Baker said recently said, the last 30 seconds is someone actually *seeing* her properly for the first time, even though the person in particular was better at trying than the others, there was still miscommunication, not helped by a partial language barrier and their first interactions. But no matter what happens next, there was a small sense of relief in someone finally seeing her and holding her when she finally broke.
literally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she was the bravest person in this whole movie and someone saw and respected that. anon <3
